What do you like most about working at Nellis Air Force Base?
I have been around the Air Force literally my whole life. I have been at Nellis since 1998 and working for NAF for 20 years. Nellis is home for me!.
What’s the interesting things about the facility you are working at that not a lot of people know about?
Human Resources does so much! Much more than what most people think. From security to bringing people on board. The realm of HR covers a vast variety of tasks. We are ALWAYS busy but it is so rewarding. I genuinely like to help people and coming from an Air Force background as a brat and civilian myself, I like to pride myself in knowing the ins and outs of life at Nellis.
Do you have any messages for the new recruits at the base?
Ask questions and be open to new experiences and people!
Thank you so much!

UNITING THROUGH SERVICE: The Inspirational Journey of Ms. Bennie Vance and the UNITE Program
In the lively heart of Nellis Air Force Base, Ms. Bennie Vance stands as a testament to dedication, leadership, and the power of community. As the “Community Cohesion Coordinator and Unite Program Manager”, her journey with the Air Force is a beacon of inspiration for many.
Ms. Bennie Vance’s decision to join the Air Force is one she cherishes deeply. Reflecting on her career, she expresses immense gratitude for every active-duty assignment and civilian position she has held. “I thank God for every active-duty assignment and civilian position held. The career investment that others have made in me is unlimited, and I am forever grateful,” she shares. Her goal is to provide a return on that investment by continuing to serve and invest in others. During her active duty, Ms. Vance had the honor of working for General Fogleman at Osan Air Base in Korea. As part of his administrative staff, she witnessed servant leadership at its finest. General Fogleman once wrote about her, “I was totally impressed by the way she turned around my Command Administration Section…her leadership style is effective, and her positive attitude is contagious. She gets her job done without fanfare, but the results are spelled out in bright lights.”
Transitioning to a civilian role, Ms. Vance served as a Program Analyst at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia. Under the guidance of Mr. “Blaze” Burgess, she provided program management support to 100 personnel across six divisions. Her contributions were
instrumental in coordinating Air Combat Command’s Core Function Support plans, encompassing $900 billion in resources. She also played a key role in designing and laying out Air Combat Command’s strategy document over four cycles.
Currently, Ms. Vance serves as the Nellis and Creech Community Cohesion Coordinator and Unite Program Manager. The Unite Program, initiated by the Chief of Staff of the Air Force (CSAF), empowers commanders and unit leaders with funding for recreational programs and activities.
The program aims to promote squadron revitalization, strengthen resiliency, and increase interaction between unit members through activity-based events.
The Unite Program covers the costs of events for active duty, Reserve, Guard, and both appropriated and non-appropriated funded civilian employees.
“Unite is about U: U are valuable, U are appreciated, U are celebrated, U are resilient, and U are a part of one of the greatest teams known to mankind, the United States Air Force,” Ms. Vance emphasizes.
Since its launch in 2019, the Unite Program at Nellis and Creech has seen tremendous success. With over 1,400 events and more than 70,000 participants, the program has fostered a “We Unite” approach and attitude. Units have engaged in a wide range of recreational activities, including bowling, hiking, kayaking, golf, trampoline parks, laser tag, rock climbing, stair climbing events, axe throwing, go-karting, roller skating, ice skating, skiing, snowboarding, escape rooms,
zip-lining, paint parties, and more.
Units have also created unique events such as the 99 MDG Mash Bash and Wraithfest, and have utilized first-class on-base facilities like Arts & Crafts, The Club, Community Commons, Base Theater, Information Tickets and Travel, Outdoor Recreation rentals, Sunrise Vista Golf Course, and the Retreat Pool.
The impact of the Unite Program is evident in the findings from the Defense Organizational Climate Surveys (DEOCS). Higher unit cohesion has been linked to improved readiness, higher retention, and lower likelihood of assault, harassment, and suicide. “Unite is making a difference AF-wide,” Ms. Vance proudly states.
A Legacy of Service
Ms. Bennie Vance’s journey with the Air Force is a testament to the power of dedication, leadership, and service. Her work with the Unite Program continues to strengthen the bonds within the Air Force community, fostering a sense of unity and resilience. As she continues to serve, Ms. Vance remains committed to investing in others and making a lasting impact on the lives of those around her.
