This is Lt. Col. Nick Cunningham, your 99th Force Support Squadron (99 FSS) Commander.

As we delve into the August edition of “On the Radar,” I want to express my heartfelt thanks to all of you. It is an absolute honor to work alongside you in creating stellar programming for your enjoyment.

As readers and unwavering supporters of our 99 FSS establishments, your dedication means the world to us. Your passion drives our purpose! I live to serve and have a burning desire to support our airmen, military families, veterans, retirees, and all members of Team Nellis. Indeed, you are what makes Nellis unique, and your well-being is our priority and concern. Whether through social initiatives, community gatherings, or personalized assistance, we are here to support you. One way we’re getting after this is your 99 FSS continues to introduce engaging programs that enhance our community life. From fitness challenges to our inaugural Spring Carnival, we are dedicated to keeping you involved and energized. Stay tuned for events on our schedule—you wouldn’t want to miss them!

As we say goodbye to the sweltering days of summer, our team is preparing for the moments ahead. Imagine outdoor festivals, indoor showcases, and thrilling Nevadan adventures! Our guiding principle —”We Spark the Mission” — isn’t just a squadron catchphrase. It propels us onward. As Chief Tasha McFarlande’s more than remarkable 20-year journey, with the US Air Force comes to a close at sunset we take a moment to celebrate a leader whose influence extends beyond the ranks.

Her steadfast dedication unwavering commitment and tireless service have made an impression on the Force Support Squadron (99FSS) and all those fortunate enough to serve alongside her. Nurturing the Future Generation

During her tenure as the Senior Enlisted Leader at the 99FSS Chief McFarlande’s prioritized investing in growth. She recognized that supporting our airmen was more than a responsibility—it was a true calling.

Through mentor ship, training and

genuine concern she sparked ambition in those she worked with, encouraging them to aim push harder and strive for their selves. Her presence, in the hallways served as a reminder that true leadership goes beyond titles—it’s all about uplifting others. She wasn’t only a leader; she was also a source of inspiration to everyone around her.

As we bid farewell to Chief McFarlande and wish her a deserved retirement we honor Chief Tasha McFarlande. May the next phase of her life be as rewarding and fulfilling as the one she crafted here. Her impact will resonate through the halls of the 99FSS motivating us to strive for excellence aspire, for greatness and cherish her memory.

MAJOR EDSON

As Major Stephanie Edson moves to her next duty station as the A1 Director of Manpower, Personnel and Service at the USAF Warfare Center (a short hop away), we take a moment to look back on the significant impact she has had as the Director of Operations for the 99th Force Support Squadron (99FSS).

Her departure signifies the end of an era characterized by dedication, relentless commitment and influential leadership. Major Edson has been our beacon of light, during times guiding us with wisdom and unwavering empathy to navigate through obstacles and stay on course.

Her influence is woven into the fabric

of our team. Under Major Edson’s supervision our programs have taken pivotal steps ahead and administrative tasks have become more streamlined. Every success story and milestone have a little influence from the Major as she didn’t just manage; she raised the bar. True leadership goes beyond titles. Major Edson embodied this truth.

Her pursuit of excellence echoes throughout our organization, motivating us all to reach for heights. As we bid her farewell we celebrate her time with us and wish her endeavors to be as remarkable as her contributions.

KAYAKING THE BLACK CANYON

Greetings, to all adventure enthusiasts and water lovers! If you’re eager to trade your shoes for a paddle and your desk chair for a kayak, then pay attention! The Outdoor Recreation (ODR) Team is gearing up to “Kayak the Black Canyon” on Saturday, August 17 from 7am-5pm.

Let’s imagine this!

You find yourself at the foot of the Hoover Dam with the Colorado River spreading out like a glistening blue ribbon in front of you. Your reliable tandem kayak is ready. You’re on the brink of embarking on a 12-mile downstream voyage through the inspiring Black Canyon.

At the beginning, you slide into your kayak exchanging fist bumps with your paddling companion. The water shimmers as you set off! The Hoover Dam towers overhead. Suddenly you become one with this aquatic realm. Tandem kayaks entail laughter, synchronized paddling strokes, and the occasional “Oops, my mistake!” as you navigate through the twists and turns. Fret not—there’s strength in unity.

Do you have what it takes? Exploring the Black Canyon is more, than a journey; it’s a discovery of hidden treasures in winding side canyons where sunlight dances on the water and ancient rock formations hold stories untold. Taking a break midway, you can relax on a shore unpack your lunch (whether it’s a PB&J or something more gourmet) and bask in the warmth of the sun. Who knows you might even catch sight of a sheep or two!

Despite the effort of paddling all day your heart will be filled with joy as you witness the breathtaking beauty of the Black Canyon with every stroke. This kayak trip isn’t about paddling; it’s an adventure where you’ll connect with active-duty service members and their family. It’s a chance to forge bonds, share stories around the campfire and create memories.

So, gather your gear slather, on sunscreen and prepare for a day filled with laughter, exploration and pure enjoyment as you navigate the waters of the Black Canyon. Let’s make it a day to remember! Enjoying a day on the water.

Finding ways to unwind and de-stress is crucial, and photography offers a perfect escape. Studio 99’s monthly photo contest provides an accessible and engaging way to capture moments, offering therapeutic benefits and fostering community connections.

Studio 99 is excited to launch our monthly photo contest, aimed at bringing the community together through the art of photography. Using your phone to snap and share your world makes it super easy for everyone to join in. Each month, a new theme is announced, reflecting different aspects of life at Nellis Air Force Base. Participants capture these themes, sharing their unique perspectives and creating a vibrant community tapestry.

Joining the contest is simple. Follow Studio 99 on social media to stay updated on themes and announcements. Snap photos that fit the monthly theme using your phone or camera. Share your photos on Instagram with the hashtag #MyStudio99, and make sure your profile is set to public so we can see your entry.
