FSS Spotlight

What do you like most about working at Nellis Air Force Base?

I think a lot of folks associate Nellis AFB as the “Vegas Strip” and don’t realize that we are in a prime location to get outdoors. We have everything from desert sports such as canyoneering and sandboarding to water sports such as kayaking and wakeboarding, to high elevation mountains reaching 12,000’ tall with mountaineering and skiing all within a one hour drive from Base. Expand that range to three to four or more hours and you have Death Valley National Park, Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon National park, Great Basin National Park, Joshua Tree National Park… we rival many other Bases in terms of proximity to amazing outdoors!

What’s the interesting things about the facility you are working at that not a lot of

We have some of the highest trained trip leaders in all of the Air Force which allows us to run many programs in house to keep

the cost of programs affordable including single and multi pitch rock climbing, alpine climbing, mountaineering, whitewater rafting and kayaking, canoeing, swiftwater rescue, wilderness first aid and first responder, and avalanche education. This level of experience (35 years of guiding between our two Program Coordinators), professionalism and training gives us a seat at the table with Air Force Outdoor Recreation Agency to help steer the direction of Outdoor Recreation programs Air Force wide.

Do you have any messages for the new recruits at the base?

Get out and explore! There is a lot more to do than meets the eye. Do so safely as the desert can be a harsh environment. And don’t forget that when its 115 degrees in July that the higher elevation peaks an hours drive from Base are 30 degrees cooler and provide an amazing reprieve from the summer heat!

Thank you so much!

It’s that time of the year again, folks! The time when we come together to share gratitude, camaraderie, and of course, a delicious meal. We’re thrilled to announce a very special service at The Club at Nellis AFB. The one and only Gary Sinise Foundation is hosting our Thanksgiving lunch on Monday, November 18th from 10:30 AM to 1:30 PM.

Known for his iconic role as Lt. Dan in Forrest Gump, Gary Sinise has been a steadfast supporter of our service members through his incredible work with the Gary Sinise Foundation. His unwavering dedication to our active duty service members and their families has touched countless lives and we are beyond grateful for his continued partnership with the 99th Force Support Squadron (99FSS) at Nellis Air Force Base.

This event promises to be a delightful feast filled with laughter, heartwarming moments, and a chance to connect with fellow airmen and their families. So mark your calendars, polish those boots, and bring your hearty appetites to The Club!

We’re laying out a lavish Holiday Buffet featuring Tossed Greens-&-Grapes Salad, Roasted Pork with Dried Fruit & Port Sauce, Roast Beef with Caramelized Shallots, and Roasted Buttered Turkey with Mashed Potatoes & Pan Roasted Turkey Gravy. For

those who like a bit of sweetness with their savory, there’s Savory Sweet Potato Mash and Smoky Cranberry-Apple Sauce. We’ll also have Sautéed Green Beans with Almonds, Buttered Steamed Broccoli, and a selection of mouth-watering desserts that would make even Grandma proud. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to share a meal with Gary Sinise and create lasting memories with your Nellis AFB family. We’re excited to celebrate this Thanksgiving together and give thanks for the incredible service and sacrifice of our airmen.

See you there!

Grateful to Gary Sinise and his foundation for their tireless support, we look forward to seeing you all on November 18th! Let’s make this a Thanksgiving to remember.

As always, thank you to our amazing team at The Club for their hard work in making this event possible. You are greatly appreciated!
