Sorry the Kilworth News is a Little Late this Month…………... Getting the Kilworth News out at the beginning of the month is always a juggling act between waiting for information to be sent in and filling 16 pages, and then leaving enough time for printing and distribution. One of the key priorities is for information to be up to date and relevant. In recent months there have been a number of occasions when events in the village have moved quickly and there have been suggestions that including the Parish Council Meeting Minutes from the previous month has made this information out of date and of limited use. So last month and this month we are waiting for the latest Parish Council meeting to have taken place and the minutes written up before we send the publication to the printers. Inevitably with the PC meetings taking place on the last Thursday in the month, this is leading to a later date for the Kilworth News to reach you. Well that’s Halloween out of the way and Bonfire Night fast on its heels. No big

celebrations now until Christmas, but how many shopping days are left? Not as many as you may think or wish for! Or are you internet shopping and waiting for ‘black Friday?’. There are still plenty of entertainments at the moment on the world stage, that is if you count the American Presidential Elections as entertainment. It is sad to see the depths the candidates plunge to in scoring points off each other. It seems a far cry from Barack Obama’s administration. Although there are not many village activities taking place in November, there are plenty to put in your diaries for the months to come. See back page for details of the Choir Festival and Village Quiz in December as well as the date for the next Safari Supper in March 2017. One date not to forget is the Remembrance Services on Sunday 13th November. There are some beautiful Autumn photos in the Kilworth News this month taken by Maggie and Peter Morgan on their recent

Letters to the Editors Dear Editors I have just been reading the latest Kilworth News, for which I would like to thank you for your hard work and dedication to produce for the benefit of all villagers. Over the years I have often admired members of the village who have offered their services, for the benefit of many, with no thought of reward. Dear Editors

Looking at last month’s minutes re the road/path in the Bogs. (Item 10) If it is of help my understanding from my days when we went through the legals prior to the big dig out of the overburden from the Victorian tip in 1998 is as follows…………

I was teaching full time and didn't seem to have time for those frivolities! He then went on to support The Bogs working in partnership with the PC. Subsequently the Bogs and the eastern end of the MG were designated as a Nature Reserve after due consultation. On Ordnance Survey 25 inch maps Cranmer Lane is shown as extending down into the farm yard although the actual wording stops at the boundary of Spring Cottage building (where the Common Land commences. )The line of Cranmer Lane may once have passed through the farm yard and along the southern edge of Elmcroft gardens as evidenced by recent excavation and clearance work undertaken by Ian Hampson to improve drainage in his parent’s garden boundary .

The Kilworth Challenge and as most of the villagers know he put his heart ❤️ and soul into the organisation, like many others, with no thought of reward. Our Parish Council Meeting of the 27th October 2016 1. 2. Question Time For Parishioners A parishioner requested an update on the Neighbourhood Plan and asked when it will be on the HDC website for public comment. The Parish Council advised that the plan has now been submitted to HDC. The Clerk will contact HDC to find out when the plan will be on the HDC website for comments. A parishioner requested an update on the proposed development on the Pincet Lane/Station Road site. The Parish Council advised that an outline planning application for 20 houses has just been submitted to HDC, the Parish Council have not yet received the paperwork for comment. A parishioner asked for clarification of the Parish Council’s response to planning applications submitted prior to the approval of the Neighbourhood Plan. The Parish Council advised that they are requesting HDC to delay decision on any planning applications submitted that do not follow the Neighbourhood Plan. However, HDC have advised that it is not feasible to delay applications on this basis. This contradicts the advice given by Stephen Pointer (HDC) at the open meeting held in the village on 13/05/16. The Clerk will contact Stephen Pointer to discuss. Notice of Landowner Deposit Has anyone seen the notices that have appeared on the bridleways and footpaths between North Kilworth and Welford? They show a map as shown here and information about a Landowner Deposit. More information from anyone who is familiar with this term would be really helpful. Looking at Northamptonshire County Council website the explanation given is as follows: Under Common Law and the Highways Act 1980 it is possible for members of the public to claim that a track has been dedicated as a public right of way by the landowner by their failure to interrupt the use of it; this is called 'implied dedication'. Whilst the landowner may be able to produce evidence that they have not dedicated the track by taking steps to prevent the general public from using it (by, for example, challenging users, erecting signs or only allowing use by specifically authorised people), it is often difficult to prove this at a later stage. It is possible for landowners to protect themselves from future claims that a public path has come into being by implied dedication by making a deposit under Section 31 of the Highways Act 1980. Lodging a deposit does not affect any right of way which may have been acquired through public use prior to the date of the deposit. Whether this is in any way linked to the permissive pathways that have been enjoyed locally for a number of years it would be interesting to find out. Comments please!

Improvement Project for the Church Building in North Kilworth It is some months since the Parochial Church Council updated villagers on our plans for the Church building. Work on this project has also limited our time to concentrate on other events and this lay behind the decision to cancel the Harvest Lunch in the absence of firm indications of attendance in the weeks beforehand. However we are continuing our programme of monthly soup lunches , the proceeds of which are sent to selected charities. Our original plans were for abroad programme of modernisation to bring our building into the 21st century. We have discussed these with the Diocese and a range of other statutory consultees prior to applying for the necessary consents..

All Souls' Service A service to remember those who have died. Saturday 29th October, 2016 at 4pm St Andrew's Church, Peatling Parva During this short service of hymns and readings we shall remember those who have died and there will be an opportunity to light a candle in memory of a loved one. If you are unable to attend, but would like a name included in the service, please contact The Rev'd Emma Davies 01455 556573 or anyone from the PCC at Peatling Parva. All are welcome.

As a result of these discussions the project was updated and we are now concentrating on the installation of a disability unisex toilet, a catering facility, a secure area for storage of village society archives , complete rewiring, improvements to drainage and re-decoration internally. We are in process of applying to the Diocese for a capital grant for parts of this work which we hope will match fund possible external sources . The PCC also voted in favour at their last meeting to spend much of our available reserves so that we can meet stipulations in regard to maintenance issues in the interim . Visitors will also notice that the carpet in the Chancel and the rubber underlay has now been stripped out .This was rotting due to the damp but, another upside, it has exposed 4 monument stones on the floor plus attractive black and red tiling which will be cleaned up. We are hopeful that our capital grant application will be reconsidered once the maintenance works are completed . The PCC is very keen to welcome anyone interested in becoming engaged in this project in the form of membership, time, money or all 3! Support for Christian Aid The recent mini-series on St. Paul, linked with the Hunger Lunches, based at Swinford Rectory, raised another £60 for Christian Aid’s support of refugees. The six weeks of group meetings to look at “Being Disciples” … the fascinating booklet written by Archbishop Rowan Williams, begins on Wed 9th November at 7.30 pm at the Rectory…more details see above and from Canon Oxley

Revd. Alison Iliffe’s Study Trip to India

I, along with other Curates in the Diocese of Leicester have been given the opportunity, as part of our ongoing training, to take part in a study trip to one of our link Dioceses. I will therefore be going to the Diocese of Trichy-Tanjore in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu in January 2017. I am really looking forward to seeing ministry in a different context and culture and learning as much as I can from the experience. A contribution of £150 is being requested by the Diocese from the parishes within which I serve. Rather than just asking parishes for a contribution I would like to be able to share as much as I can of this opportunity with as many people as I can. I would therefore like to invite you to come to The Rectory, 21 Dag Lane, North Kilworth LE17 6HD, on Thursday 17th November, any time between 7.00 and 8.30pm to hear more about where we will be going and perhaps even get a taste of the experience! If you feel able to contribute to this financially I would be grateful, but if not please still come, knowing that I have your support and prayers at this time will be really encouraging as I prepare for this exciting opportunity. Collaboration of Volunteers Clean up the Washpit in North Kilworth The Parish Council decided it was time for a clean-up operation of the Washpit as it has been ten years since it was last drained. Instead of paying contractors to do this job, volunteers were sought by Sue and Nick Otter. So it was, on a grey October Saturday, willing volunteers assembled. Bruce (Phillips) drew the short straw - being the person with a wet suit and was given the task of removing ‘the bung’ (plug) to let the water out! Also joining the ‘fun’ was Sue and Nick Otter, Peter Jones, David Ritson and a representative from South Kilworth, Lawrence Howie. I passed by and appointed myself chief photographer! The plan was to drain the water out and remove all the rubbish, sediment and rotten leaves from the pit and allow the water to refill from it’s natural spring water source to ‘freshen the area up’. Sounds simple? Well as is often the case, things did not go according to plan. The bung was removed but the water remained stubbornly in the washpit. It refused to drained away. The conclusion was reached that the drain is blocked! Plan B: send Bruce back into the deep water to pull the sediment etc into shallow water so that the ‘welly wearers’ could scoop it out into wheel barrows for disposal. It was hard labour but spirits were buoyed by Wendy from Kilworth Hall when she brought out tea and biscuits for the workers. The other end of the drain was located so that clearance can arranged at some point and proper drainage can be reinstated. In the meantime, the area has been given some TLC. (Peter wore a 'Sydney' sweat shirt but didn't dig far enough. He only got as far as finding the drain cover.) Fran Ritson Postscript: A big thank you to the boys from Severn Trent who came and cleared out the wash pit drain. The bung is back in place and its now all working as it should and will fill from the springs and rain water. Replacing the fencing is the next step. Sue Otter

Green fingers Winter is fast approaching, leaves are falling rapidly and the wind and rain is increasing by the week. Tender plants will need protection from the frost, gales and rain now. Get moving plants into greenhouses or sheltered spots...if not wrap up plants and pots in situ. Winter is hard on the birds too, so keep the food supplies well topped up. Keep fallen leaves cleared up. Prune roses. Plant tulip bulbs ready for next spring. Raise containers onto feet to prevent waterlogging. Plant out winter bedding. Put out bird food. Clear excess debris with seasonal bonfires if allowed.

North Kilworth Women’s Institute The October Open Meeting was extremely well attended with numbers boosted by several visitors The speaker was Mr Ginns from a funeral directors in Leicester who gave us a very informative insight into the procedures taken following a persons death. Despite the sombre subject he enlivened his talk with humour and anecdotes and was extremely entertainng November’s meeting will be our Faith Supper and also the AGM If anyone feels that they can contribute to the running of our WI then please consider joining the committee Meetings take place on the 3rd Thursday in the month at the village hall and we would welcome more new members

North Kilworth Reading Group The next meeting of the Reading Group is on 24th November at 8.00pm, venue TBC. The book under discussion is ‘The Glorious Heresies’ by Lisa McInerney. The book is the winner of the Baileys' Women's Prize for Fiction 2016. It is an irreverent and darkly humorous look at life in Ireland. The North Kilworth Safari Supper Saturday 4th March 2017

The new committee for the Floodlit Sports Association are organising the 2017 Safari Supper. For anybody unfamiliar with this event it is a great way to get to know new people. The evening begins at the Village Hall where you buy all your drinks for the evening and find out where you are going for your starter. There are maps of the village available if needed and if you don't know anyone we can introduce you to the host for your starter. At the end of each course your host will have an envelope that will reveal where you are going for your next course! After dessert everyone returns to the Village Hall for coffee, drinks and liquors. Please note you do not have to host a course to participate, so if you have never done the Safari Supper before and would prefer not to cook let us know. When booking your place please let us know if you have any dietary requirements and, if you are happy to cook, let us know which course you would prefer to do. We need hosts to cook either a starter, main or dessert catering for 8 people. This is a great event and all the funds raised for the Safari Supper go towards the upkeep of the children's playground in the village and the floodlit tennis courts. Soup lunch Many thanks to all who supported the Soup Lunch in Church on 18th October. £90 has been sent to Medecins Sans Frontieres, whose doctors and staff take emergency medical care to people in crisis anywhere in the world. They constantly risk their lives, as currently in Syria, in providing assistance in the most appalling conditions to people in desperate need. November’s Soup Lunch will again be on the third Tuesday (15th), 12.30 – 1.30pm. In December children from St Andrew’s School will be helping at the event and it will therefore be on the SECOND TUESDAY, 13th and will have a festive theme.

North Kilworth Bowls Club We are now into the winter season and the green has been 'put to bed' until next spring. The club AGM will be held, in the clubhouse, on 23rd November at 7:30 and we hope all members will attend this important meeting. Additionally the Management Committee have been planning for the Dinner and Presentation Night in the clubhouse on 12th November as well as a programme of social events. Our social events are open to all so we would love to see you if you would like to come along either by

yourself or with a group of friends. The bar will, of course, be open. The early social events are listed below and those for 2017 will be finalised and posted in the newsletter next month. Quiz or Race Night Tickets for the Christmas raffle are available from any committee member at £1 each,

Also don't forget the Clubhouse is available if you are planning any event and that there is a bar which can be opened if required. Speak to any Committee member if you have any plans afoot. Choir Festival 2016 The CHOIR FESTIVAL will be held on Friday 2nd December in church. Tickets for this ever-popular event will be on sale soon from Sarah Holmes (880883), David Sanders (880769), Liz Jones (880262) and St Andrew’s School. The choir of St Andrew’s will be taking part, as well as the De Montfort Gospel Choir and the Lutterworth Rock Choir. Mulled wine and refreshments will be served afterwards.
