The Curious Life of the Butterbur Many will be familiar with the giant "wild rhubarb" leaves of the butterbur on the Bogs during Summer months but Spring sees the emergence of the primitive looking flowering seed stems of the plant. Such sites are now rare

in the monoculture of modern agriculture. Why the name? In medieval times the leaves were used for their qualities in extending the life of freshly churned butter which was wrapped around the "cakes" long before the days of refrigeration. Thanks to the efforts of the Hampsons and others some years back we now have the luxury of a profusion of these rare and

Aggressive Dogs on Disused Railway Line I’m writing this just to let everyone be aware. As a regular runner, my route usually takes me down the disused railway line. On Monday 13th March around 10.30am I was running from Mill Farm end towards the South Kilworth Road. About halfway along I could see ahead of me a lady with two dogs who clearly weren’t on leads. This was not a concern as I meet and pass many people walking their dogs and have never had a problem before. However, on this occasion, both dogs came bounding up towards me and seemed very boisterous. I was aware to keep my arms tucked in but whilst the white dog ran off, the black dog persisted and nipped my hand. I would have ignored it at this stage but then it came at me again and bit once more. I was somewhat annoyed, and called to the lady to get her aggressive dog on a leash. As she faffed around controlling the white dog, the black one squared up to me barking and snarling. To be honest I was ready to defend myself as she took an age to get it under control. I was furious and asked her, ‘What if I had been a toddler?’ Her reply was, ‘Oh, I would have had them on a leash!’ Although she muttered apologies these dogs were clearly uncontrollable and aggressive. The matter has been reported to the Police and the lady in question, will by now hopefully have been interviewed.

Fortunately for me I was wearing woollen gloves and the dog succeeded in biting a small hole in these and failed to puncture my skin. Can I stress that I’ve never had an issue before, and love seeing and meeting the various dogs with their owners having fun on their walks. I’ve included a photo of the dogs in question in case she shows up again and ask that we are all vigilant. David Helsby

Christian Aid Week is coming ... 14th - 20th May We've barely left winter behind, spring is upon us and before we can blink we'll be in May and almost half way through the year!! As in the last two years I will be completing the annual Christian Aid House to House Collection in North Kilworth. Please do consider joining me on Sunday 14th May between 6 - 8pm - just one evening for only a couple of hours (or less if there are more of us). This is the main fund raising initiative of the year for Christian Aid. As always, they desperately need our support to continue to fund both the current emergency relief work in various parts of this troubled world and the on-going efforts to help folk lift themselves out of poverty. You only have to see the daily news to see the living hell that millions of people are going through, especially for millions of refugees, and of course, regarding the famine in great swathes of eastern Africa at the moment. Quite often we feel utterly helpless when faced with such seemingly intractable problems and suffering, but Christian Aid Week is a great opportunity to actually do something to give some of these people a helping hand, both in terms of offering a couple of hours of your time, as well as a gift of money. Please join me and we'll can help desperate people together. Anne Vincent. Christian Aid Organiser

Rural Watch – Theft of Diesel We have had reports of diesel being stolen from building sites recently. If you keep diesel on your site/premises, consider fencing, CCTV, and a good lock to help keep your supplies safe. If you spot anything suspicious or are a victim of crime please call us on 101 or 999 in an emergency or if a crime is in progress. Thank you, Leicestershire Neighbourhood Watch

Soup Lunches

Many thanks to those who supported the soup lunch in church on 22 February. £62 was raised and donated to the Christian Aid Syria Emergency Appeal. A biting wind made the soup lunch on the 22nd March a particularly good option and we raised £113 which has been sent to the Bishop‘s Lent Appeal. This year the Appeal will be supporting Leicester’s link Diocese of Kiteto in Kenya and money will go to providing short term help by providing text books for schools and longer term by providing teacher training facilities. A proportion (20%) of money raised will be directed towards emergency famine relief in the drought stricken areas of Kiteto. Many thanks for your support.

St. Andrew’s CE Primary School St Andrew’s is Outstanding! It is with great pleasure that we can say that we have been judged "Outstanding" in relation to our distinctiveness and effectiveness as a Church School. This is a great result and one that we believe everyone has worked towards over several years. The full report is available to read on our website in the Key Information Section. Some of the key areas that make St Andrew’s outstanding are:

• • • •

Christian character informed by the school’s Christian values of friendship, honesty, kindness, respect, dedication and forgiveness can be seen in all areas of the school’s work leading to good outcomes for all. Leaders at all levels share a clear vision rooted in Christian values and have an accurate understanding of the school’s strengths and areas to improve and as a result the school is developing further. Relationships within the whole school community are outstanding, reflecting its strong Christian character. The achievement of all children in all core subjects is good as a result of the strong Christian ethos that promotes an understanding and commitment to nurture each unique child.

Save the Date! ON Sunday 25th June there will be a Family Fun Afternoon at Kilworth Hall. Pulled pork baps, strawberry teas and a variety of all-age activities and stalls. More information to follow, but save the date.

Children's Society Boxes ** IMPORTANT NOTICE** I understand that the new £1 coin is now being brought into circulation. Apparently the old £1 coin will be accepted for only a few months, so the Children's Society boxes will need to be opened twice this year to ensure that any old £1 coins can be banked while they are still legal tender otherwise the Society will lose lots of money. I'll be in touch with you all in due course, probably August, to remove any old £1 coins from your boxes. Anne Vincent

“Why Hollow Easter Eggs Are The Best!……….” On my desk there is a small, gold-wrapped chocolate Easter egg. I was given it at the last Messy@Misterton service, along with the other adults and children there. We were challenged to keep our eggs uneaten until Easter Day – which is quite a challenge!

“Sometimes we can all feel hollow ourselves, empty inside because of sadness or loss or simply questioning the meaning of life”

shape resembles the stone that was rolled away from the tomb on that first Easter Day . . .

But the thought about my egg which I find the most compelling this Lent is this: underneath the gold wrapping and the chocolate there is space – my Easter egg, like most Easter eggs, is hollow. That may Mine is still there, intact, not disappoint us – we’d like a solid because I’ve given up chocolate egg best perhaps. My hollow Easter egg reminds me that God is with me and holds me always in his life. I pray you may know that is true for you too. You will be made very welcome at any of our church services over Holy Week and Easter and we would love you to join us if you can. I shall be away by then, working at Leicester Cathedral for three months, but I shall take my little Easter egg with me and think of you all in the AvonSwift Benefice as I break it open on Easter Day! I wish you all a very happy Easter with lots of hollow Easter eggs!

The Safari Supper Thank you to everybody who participated in the 2017 Safari Supper. We are delighted to confirm that the total amount raised was £1408. This will be added to our funds to go towards the upkeep of the floodlit tennis courts and the children’s playground. 95 people took part this year, as always meeting in the village hall to buy their drinks for the evening and to find out where they were going for their first course. Maps were provided to help people navigate themselves from course to course around the village and the evening ended at the village hall for a prize draw, coffee and liquors. It was lovely to see some new faces and we hope everyone had a great evening! This event continues to be a great way to get to know people in the village. The new committee would like to thank everybody for their continued support and look forward seeing everyone at the Safari Supper next year!

After being diagnosed with breast cancer she took a look at how certain foods could possibly be beneficial to lessen the risk of contracting some forms of cancer. Her findings were very similar to the sort of diet that the wartime generation ate - low carbohydrates, very few grains, plenty of fruit and vegetables etc. She certainly gave us food for thought and she was thanked by Liz Jones Thanks to Jackie, Beryl and Mandy for providing refreshments, flowers and raffle The next meeting’s speaker will be Jennifer Rogers on her trip to America We would love to see new members and guests at any meeting which are held on 3 rd Thursday in the month at the Village Hall

North Kilworth Bowls Club February saw the clubhouse packed with 40 participants eager to test their knowledge skills in our very popular Quiz Night with Bob Tunnicliffe as the Quizmaster. The quiz rounds covered a wide range of topics terminating with the last round 'Stick or Twist'. This section really sorted the teams out as any wrong answer in that section resulted in any points won in that section being forfeited. As a result there was only one team who emerged completely unscathed from that, the team from Lutterworth U3A, who were the evening's winners. In addition to the quiz the participants enjoyed an excellent supper prepared by Anita and Ivor which fortified everyone at the half way point. An excellent evening. This was followed in March by another of our popular Bingo nights with cash prizes for each of the games. We are now looking forward to our last social event (see below) and the start of the bowling season. Work is already underway to prepare the green for the season ahead.
