KEEPING YOU INFORMED

Happy Christmas to All…………... What a busy time of the year! The run up to the biggest celebration on the annual calendar seems to take over the month and everywhere is a hive of activity, from the roads with increased traffic, (especially white vans) to shops bulging with Christmas paraphernalia and workplaces where we are both working hard and possibly partying too. Traffic in the village is also a cause for concern, especially if you are trying to cross the main road. This has become increasingly difficult over the years, no not just because we are getting older! Although it now seems unlikely that the County Council will support a bid for a pedestrian crossing, the Parish Council are investigating other funding options, please see page 2 for details.

the amazing Choir Festival is taking place, it’s great to see that the choir of St. Andrew’s School are taking part again this year. This is quickly followed on Saturday the 3rd with the Village Hall Quiz Night, testing all our general knowledge and providing a great source of entertainment. Throughout the month there are opportunities to attend a range of religious services, some with plenty of carol singing on offer!

There are plenty of activities in the village to take part in this month. We kick off with the St. Andrew’s School Christmas Fair at 3.30 on Friday 2nd December and then later on the same day

It is also the time to start making plans for next year. There are details inside on page 14 of how to take part in the excellent Safari Supper (a brilliant way to get to know people, and see their houses!) and on

Further afield there are Christmas markets for those individual gifts. The Market Harborough Christmas Fayre is on Friday 2nd December and the Melton Mowbray Victorian Christmas Fayre which is on the 3rd and 4th December promises to include a Santa parade, marching band and fancy dress.

Letters to the Editors

Helping us to Cross the Road Crossing the A4304 has become a major issue in the village not just for school children catching the 7.30am bus in the dark but for anyone, particularly those pushing a pram or no longer unable to sprint to avoid the speeding traffic. The need for a crossing is not in doubt. Leicestershire County Council assessed the site 12 months ago and estimate the cost of installing a zebra crossing at £54,000. The crossing would probably be sited to the left of Howkins garage as you face south, but, they indicated that there were problems with the lack of space where the hedges are on the North side of Station Rd. Harborough District Council has received an application for the development of 20 homes on the Pincet Lane/Station Rd site. The development of this site could well resolve the hedge problem and provide space for a crossing. The Parish Council could now make a bid for what’s called Section 106 funding, put simply this is a financial contribution from a developer towards a community facility - in this case a road crossing. If this is approved the contribution from the developer could be in the region of £20,000. However, the likelihood of a Section 106 bid for a pedestrian crossing being successful depends on the support of Leicestershire County Council Highways and at this stage it seems that they will not support our proposal - I am still waiting for official confirmation of this but am not confident. Their reasoning is that there is adequate line of sight for pedestrians, there is a speed camera and this is not on their priority programme.

“That means if we want the pedestrian crossing, the village has to pay for the full cost for it”

That means if we want the crossing the village has to pay the full cost for it. The Parish Council discussed this issue at its meeting last night and agreed that given the weight of support for the crossing it would consider other ways of funding it. The Council will now examine various options, for instance raising the Parish precept, using Wind Farm money using Parish reserves, asking for donations, fund raising events etc and propose some solutions. Given the sum required the solution chosen will have to employ a mix of funding sources rather than just a single one. The Council would then seek the views of the village on the best way forward. The Council does not feel it would be appropriate to use the Whelan legacy. It is still possible to apply for Section 106 funding for something else and at this point the other priority, judging from the correspondence we have received is play facilities for older children. We will therefore put together a Section 106 application for this. Letters of support would be very helpful. Please send them to the Parish Clerk Mrs K Clarke, The Old Stables, Fir Tree Lane, Swinford, Lutterworth LE17 6BHe-mail northkilworthpc@hotmail.co.uk We are also asking other village organisations to write in support of this proposal. If you can help in any way to encourage others to write please do so, this is urgent. Your letters need not be lengthy but the more people who write the better the chances of our getting the funding. Thank you for your help.

Tribute to a Local Legend Alfred Charles Franklin (1918-2016) Born in Birmingham, in the year that Word War I ended, Charlie was one of twin boys. He and his twin Tom remained close throughout their lives, working together and in later years living less than two miles apart. Charlie was born with his feet facing backwards, and this resulted in him spending a great deal of time at Great Ormond Street Hospital, where they operated to correct his stance. Although fairly successful, in later years he was unable to enlist for World War II because he was considered unfit. Dad Tom was a farm labourer and his mum Florence was kept busy looking after her five children Flo, Les, Pearl and the twins. The family moved from Mitre Street in Buckingham to Welford, setting up home in West Street. Charlie and Tom, now eleven years old, would spend their weekends at Sulby Hall. Visitors to the Hall were encouraged to play tennis and cricket, and the two local boys were hired to round up the balls during the matches.

Many thanks to Anita and Ivor for providing the text and photo for this tribute to Charlie and to Sarah Holmes for writing it all up.

With his education complete aged fourteen, Charlie cycled from Welford to Market Harborough to work every day. It was at a dance in North Kilworth that he met Ivy, who had lived in the village all her life. Their courtship was overshadowed by World War II, but they did get married during the war- on 24th October 1942 at St Andrews North Kilworth. Ivy was dressed in a blue suit complete with trilby hat. Photographers were few and far between, many having been conscripted to the war. So the following day, the couple, dressed in their wedding apparel once again, set off for a studio in Rugby to have their photographs taken, three of which have remained on Charlie’s wall ever since. North Kilworth became the couple’s home, first living in Little Cottages before moving to dairy Cottages in 1953. Surrounded by many of their family including Ivy’s mother, Sunday afternoons would consist of taking tea with a variety of relatives catching up on the week’s events. Charlie joined Tom at British Thomas Houston( BTH) in Rugby, the two men working in the foundry. Initially they travelled by train, playing cards during the journey. But when Dr Beeching’s cuts closed the local line, Charlie found himself back on his bike until he could afford his car which was affectionately called his ‘Black Bomb’. Charlie and Ivy had by then bought adjoining cottages Hanwin and Hanlin, the latter becoming their home for the rest of their lives. Charlie immersed himself in village activities, playing bowls and crib at the sports club, enjoying a glass of whiskey, whilst Ivy was happy to remain at home. The couple enjoyed holidays to Blackpool and Great Yarmouth, relishing the seaside atmosphere. Charlie retired from BTH in 1980. With time on his hands and keen to keep busy, he went to work at the Doctors Surgery in Husbands Bosworth. Caring for the garden, and cleaning the doctors cars, he was a popular member of the team, getting to know many of the patients and was very grateful for the twelve bottles of whisky he was given as a leaving present when he retired for the second time. Twelve years ago, Ivy passed away and Charlie found himself on his own. He remained independent, thanks to the help and support of Ivor (his brother in law) next door. He continued to enjoy his trips to the sports club, and playing crib with his close friend Dick Oxley. Charlie enjoyed sports and had always supported the Foxes- he was the proud owner of a programme and ticket from his trip to their 1948 final against Wolverhampton Wanderers, and was delighted when they won the premiership last year. Two years ago, following a fall at home, Charlie became housebound. Thanks to the ever present assistance of Ivor and Anita and his carers, he was able to remain at home. He went to sleep one last time on Wednesday 26th October. Charlie had a great sense of humour and he was the life and soul of the party. He was a gentle and caring person who had time for everyone. A man of principle, he had innate sense of decency and integrity and will be remembered with affection by everyone who knew him.

“The Real Meaning of Christmas - God is With Us”

“I know that there will be many of you reading this who are not looking forward to Christmas with such enthusiasm”

‘O come, O come, Emmanuel . . .‘ – perhaps you know this carol which is traditionally sung in the weeks leading up to Christmas. Sometimes it is heard at the beginning of our Christmas carol services too. It may not be the most famous or well-known carol but it tells of an amazing truth: ‘Emmanuel’ means ‘God with us’. The message that God is with us is at the heart of the Christian faith and of the story we tell at Christmas. God came to be with us in Jesus, born as that baby in Bethlehem, and God is with us still, through the Holy Spirit, wanting to be a part of our lives today.

Perhaps you can ask God to share in all your excitement and joy.

However, I know that there will be many of you reading this who are not looking forward to Christmas with such enthusiasm. Perhaps this has been a difficult year for you. You may be facing illness or the worry of a family member or friend’s health. You may have lost a loved one and be struggling to walk in the new landscape in which you find yourself. You may be worried about money or you may feel you have no reason to put up the tinsel and decorate the tree. This time of year can be agony for lots of people for all sorts of reasons. If you identify with any That’s an incredible message of this, the message that God is which is worth celebrating, and with us is especially important. if you’re someone who loves to God in Jesus lived a human life enter into the full sparkle of this and understands our pain as well festival, perhaps you can call as our joy. If you do, you will receive a warm welcome, whoever you are and however you are feeling. You’ll also be surrounded by lots of people who feel just as happy or sad about life at the moment. And together, we shall help each other to tell again the amazing story of Christmas, the astonishing truth that God is with us, with you, with everyone, and will never leave us. On behalf of all of us in the clergy team, I wish you every blessing at Christmas! The Rev’d Emma Davies

KILWORTH HOUSE THEATRE 2017 As in previous years I have been able to make a corporate village booking for the 2017 summer productions at Kilworth House Theatre, prior to tickets being put on general sale in December. 140 villagers, friends and family went to the June production earlier this year so it was a huge village outing. Any complementary tickets that I am given are converted to cash and donated to the Village Hall so the village as a whole benefits from the evening. I have provisionally booked tickets for the production of ‘Kiss Me Kate' on Sat 24th June 7.30pm. Tickets are £40 each. No payment or firm commitment will be needed until January but I do need to have provisional numbers by Dec 15th so that Kilworth House Theatre can re allocate the tickets if we do not require them. North Kilworth Women’s Institute At the November meeting and AGM members were reminded of all our activities throughout the past year and also given a resume of next years programme which will give us an interesting and varied outlook on subjects that we may otherwise not have known about. The AGM followed and Beryl Stephens was re-elected as President. She thanked everyone for their support during the past year and particular thanks to those stepping down from committee. Business over, members enjoyed a faith supper which was a most enjoyable spread of items provided by members. Thanks to Lyn Wall for organising the tea and coffee this month. This gripping new novel follows a young London art-gallery employee whose discovery of a lost masterpiece draws her into the mystery surrounding its provenance The Daily Telegraph said: “Those who loved The Miniaturist will find here all the cliffhangers, twists and heart-stopping revelations they expected, and in two evocative settings . . . as a study of female creativity, it triumphs“. The North Kilworth Safari Supper Saturday 4th March 2017

The new committee for the Floodlit Sports Association are organising the 2017 Safari Supper. For anybody unfamiliar with this event it is a great way to get to know new people. The evening begins at the Village Hall where you buy all your drinks for the evening and find out where you are going for your starter. There are maps of the village available if needed and if you don't know anyone we can introduce you to the host for your starter. At the end of each course your host will have an envelope that will reveal where you are going for your next course! After dessert everyone returns to the Village Hall for coffee, drinks and liquors. Please note you do not have to host a course to participate, so if you have never done the Safari Supper before and would prefer not to cook let us know. When booking your place please let us know if you have any dietary requirements and, if you are happy to cook, let us know which course you would prefer to do. We need hosts to cook either a starter, main or dessert catering for 8 people. This is a great event and all the funds raised for the Safari Supper go towards the upkeep of the children's playground in the village and the floodlit tennis courts. To book your place please contact us by the first week in January. Homelessness is a growing problem everywhere and this donation will help provide warmth and care for those living on our local streets in winter. The next lunch will be on Tuesday 13th December – a week earlier than usual as children from the school are keen to assist before the end of term.

North Kilworth Bowls Club Our Dinner and Presentation Night was held in the clubhouse on 12th November when we enjoyed delicious food and were able to celebrate, with the prizewinners, their success in the various club competitions. What was particularly gratifying was that several of these were won by some of our newer members. After the club AGM on 23rd November (which we hope all members will endeavour to attend) we then look forward to one of the 'highlights' of the year which is our Bingo and

Yoga Sessions

Christmas Raffle, in the clubhouse, at 7:30 pm. on December 10th. This event is open to all so come along, buy some raffle tickets (a large number of prizes are on offer), enjoy some bingo and possibly go home richer and with several bottles of wine, spirits, chocolates or other goodies. All our social events are open to all so we would love to see you if you would like to come along either by yourself or with a group of friends. The bar will, of course, be open. The other planned events are listed below so get them in your diary now.

Social Events: February 11th Quiz Night March 18th Bingo April 15th Coffee Morning/Bring & Buy Sale

Also don't forget the Clubhouse is available if you are planning any event and that there is a bar which can be opened if required. Speak to any Committee member if you have any plans afoot. For news of our club and all our social events check our website or Twitter feed.
