KEEPING YOU INFORMED

In like a Lamb or a Lion??…………... Well is it winter’s last gasp or mild spring days? Weather forecasters have a difficult job in March, particularly with the uncertainty of climate change. The month will probably give us all sorts of weather, but at least the days are longer, the light levels are higher and there are green shoots everywhere to remind us that winter is nearly over. It doesn’t seem long ago (it was 2013) when there were still snowdrifts on the bridlepath to Welford at the end of March, hopefully this was a rare occurrence! March is always a changeable month, a bridge between winter and spring. No wonder it gave rise to the idiom of ‘Mad as a March Hare’. There do not seem to be many hares about these days. Has anyone seen one recently? Do let us know, it would be good to know that they are still about. It would be even better to witness some of their lively mating rituals!

There are plenty of events happening in the village this month, from Safari Supper at the beginning of the month to the Fashion Show on the 30th, with quiz nights and bingo nights in between. See page 16 for all the dates and information. The North Kilworth Marina development is making good progress now, it will be interesting to see it finished and open for business. See photos on page 4. It’s great to have some photos and information on St. Andrew’s School. North Kilworth children are very fortunate to be able to attend such a super local school. Don’t forget the 26th March is Mother’s Day. There are lots of local venues for a treat meal out with the family. As a mum it is always lovely to receive something from your children, though a handpicked posy is as good as anything shop bought. It is also the weekend when the clocks go forward, so any mum with young children will have

Letters to the Editors Dear Editors There has been a noticeable increase in dog fouling in the village over the last few months. One area where this is occurring is from the main road along High Street and down Cranmer Lane into the Millennium Green. Can we ask that whoever is responsible please clean up after their dog. A dog waste bag dispenser is provided by the Parish Council adjacent the village hall and there are various waste bins provided as well so there really is no excuse. Also there has been an increase in bagged dog waste being left in the Millennium Green and around the village. This I am sure is well intentioned but when someone forgets to return to pick up the bag this becomes a very unsightly hazard. Can we ask that bags are not left to be picked up later, simply either return to a bin or carry the bag with you. When further afield and outside the environs of the village another alternative is to use the stick and flick technique to move the dog waste off the path into dense bushes. If you see instances of dog fouling and wish to report them please contact the Parish Council. Regards Stephen O'Hara Parish Councillor

Community Windfarm Grants North Kilworth receives an annual fund to spend on community projects which are approved by the Parish Council. Projects should be sustainable and benefit the community through enhancing community cohesion and well-being or bringing shared social, economic and environmental improvements to the area. Applications are currently being invited for the next round of funding which will be available at the start of the new financial year 2017/18. Progress at North Kilworth Marina Many of us will have seen the construction work continuing at the North Kilworth Marina site over the past few months. Here are a few photos of the work in progress

The team met their target of completing the stagings before Christmas and that meant everyone was free to concentrate on getting the buildings up and the utilities connected. The company are very proud of the stagings, which are to their own design and as far as they know unlike anything anywhere else. The frames are galvanised steel, cleverly constructed to incorporate service channels to every berth without any visible wiring or piping spoiling the aesthetics. The frames support fibregrip walkways, providing a non-slip and effectively selfcleaning surface. At 3 feet wide, the walkways are also considerably wider than average, making it easy to wheel trolley’s etc. right up to boats.

With the weather still smiling on them (relatively speaking) they’ve managed to get the main building steelwork completed in good time. This has been great news for the company because they say that they are now out of the “hole” and so less susceptible to spells of wet weather, which will mean progress towards completion can carry on without interruption.

St. Andrew’s CE Primary School KS1 During this half term the children have been this way and that way, up to the local church and around the village to learn about our local community. The children have been exploring and reading maps whilst identifying landmarks in North Kilworth. The children have really enjoying learning about where they live and the history of where they have been growing up. KS2 This term we have been doing lots of exciting activities based on our topic’ Tremers.’ From earthquakes to volcanoes we have been learning about how natural disasters occur and how they affect people across the world. We were amazed learning about Pompeii and how Mt Vesuvius erupted. Our DT project this half term has been to design and build an erupting volcano. We also learned about how designers have designed earthquake proof buildings and how successful they can be. Eco Day – We joined Lubenham Primary school on an eco-day. The children worked together and had great fun. The children spent a busy morning outside making art, dens and singing songs. As a school we have taken part in Number day and we have celebrated Candlemas with a service at the church.

School Lunch As part of the school working in the community, and to encourage members of our village to come into school to see our school family. The school would like to invite our senior villagers or people who live alone to join them in their Fish and chip Friday lunch.

It would give the wider Community time to spend time with the children over lunch ( school dinners aren't that bad anymore !!) We are planning to start this after Easter in the summer term. We obviously will need an idea of numbers in order to order the meals in, as they are not cooked on the premises. “India and Faith………………..”

“We spent a few days up in the mountains of Valparai which was very beautiful and where we saw some wild animals, and of course, the food and clothes were amazing”

On 17th January ten of us, mainly Curates still in training in the Diocese of Leicester, flew to India to begin a two week trip looking at the mission and ministry in the Diocese of Trichy-Tanjore, which is one of our link Dioceses. Visiting as part of the link meant that we were able to see a different side to India than if we were tourists, having the privilege to visit various schools and homes as well as churches and mission projects. We had some amazing experiences and received such generous hospitality as we travelled across the diocese. In some respects there were many differences between being in Leicester and being in Trichy. The traffic had to be experienced to be believed – total chaos to our eyes – and yet it seemed to work! The weather was an obvious bonus at this time of the year with an average of 32°, although the humidity was high too! We spent a couple of days up in the mountains in Valparai which was very beautiful and where we saw some wild animals, and of course the

food and clothes were amazing. The main focus of the mission of the Church of South India is among women and those who are neglected by society. We visited schools and colleges where those who could pay did, but those who couldn’t were also able to receive an education. We also visited hostels and homes for children who had either lost one or both of their parents or whose parents were too poor to be able to look after them. The determination of these individuals to succeed and the joy with which they worked was inspirational. Although the context and culture is in many ways very different in India to that which we experience in the Leicester diocese, the mission and ministry is very similar as we too try to respond to helping those in the greatest need across our County.

Recipe of the Month - Seville Orange Marmalade Seville oranges or the wild, bitter oranges of Spain are wonderful and are woefully underused by local Andalucians. Here in the UK there is a short space of a few months when they are shipped over, usually looking rather nobbly and battered but still containing the wonderful sharp, scented aroma of orange and good setting properties for marmalade making. If you’ve not tried it before, go bag yourself some, you will fill your kitchen with a heavenly smell. It is however a very slow process. Unless you want to use a food processor which will reduce the peel to pulp, there really is no substitute for laboriously chopping each orange into the size of pieces you want in your marmalade, so put the radio on, sit down and enlist family to join you if you can. There are many different recipes for Seville marmalade,

this is one that I use which is based on a Nigel Slater recipe.

Put fruit in a large saucepan or preserving pan and tie muslin bag to the handle. Boil gently 12 Seville Oranges until the peel is soft, usually 1-2 2 Lemons hours and then remove the 1.4kg granulated sugar muslin bad and add your sugar. Kilworth House Theatre 2017 As in previous years I have been able to make a corporate village booking for the 2017 summer productions at Kilworth House Theatre. Any complementary tickets that I am given are converted to cash and donated to the Village Hall so the village as a whole benefits from the evening.

Any unreserved tickets for Kiss Me kate have now been returned to the Theatre However, I do still have tickets for ‘Top Hat' on Saturday 26th August. Tickets are £40 each. I do not need firm numbers or payment for this show until April but if you think that you may want tickets let me know asap. This will enable me to reserve more tickets if necessary. The booking of Corporate tickets has changed slightly this year in that rows F G and H in the centre aisle are not available. The majority of my reserved seats are in the centre aisle rows K L M and N with some side seats just adjacent to the centre aisle from row G - M. Tickets will be allocated on a first come first served basis. In addition, I may still be able to get front row seats and carers seats if you let me know asap.

It has been agreed that a phased approach will be undertaken to address the updating of the club, as finances allow. The first step to improving the clubhouse has already been completed, as the ladies toilets have been redecorated.

Green fingers Spring is most definitely on the way (or so we hope), with it usually arriving by mid March, more lighter, brighter and sunnier days will provide us the chance for more gardening opportunities and tasks. Nows the time for preparing seed beds, sowing seeds, cutting back winter shrubs and starting the regular tidying up of things. Top Ten Tips for March: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10.

Protect new spring shoots from slugs. Plant summer flowering bulbs. Top dress borders and containers that need it with fresh compost. Plant shallots, onions and potatoes. Lift and divide overgrown clumps of perennials. Cut back Dogwood and Willow that have grown to allow for more colourful stems. Hoe, pick and mulch weeds to start the control of them early. Mow the lawn if needed on dry days. Prune bush and climbing roses. Keep food out for birds, and start feeding your fish and any pond water features such as waterfalls etc. can be turned on (remove water heaters if used).

North Kilworth Women’s Institute The February meeting was well attended and, after the business of the meeting had been done, members enjoyed a talk by two gentlemen from Hambleton bakery who gave us an insight into the world of artisan baking. No additives, just flour, yeast and pure water go into the making of the delicious bread that they had brought with them. Everyone went home with a loaf or baked goods after a most enjoyable talk and there were many questions afterwards as members had found the talk extremely entertaining. Thank you to the members who provided refreshments, donated a raffle prize and sold Raffle tickets The next meeting is on 16th March and we would love to see any new members or visitors. North Kilworth Reading Group The next meeting of the Reading Group is on the 23rd March at 8.00pm venue tbc. As the January meeting was cancelled the March meeting will discuss the book allocated for February: Where my Heart Used to Beat by Sebastian Faulks. Belgrave Village Hall Just a reminder that the 49'ers payment due in March is nearly upon us .Some people are still due from January .For those new to the village who want to join in the bonus ball lottery which helps support the running cost of the village hall,the payment is £52 a year.This is paid by direct debit , bank transfer , cheque or cash please contact Gaye Duncombe on 01858 880650 or gduncombe1@gmail.com as there are some numbers available.

Golf Match North Kilworth V South Kilworth Are you ready to take up the cudgels (clubs) on behalf of your village? It has been suggested that we have a North v South golf match to be held at Kilworth Springs Golf Club during June. Although a local derby the emphasis is on creating a good social evening to which all levels of golfer ( male and female, young and old) are invited. There will be a small trophy to be played for but we suspect bragging rights will be the real trophy. The optional days are either Friday 9th June or Wednesday 21st June. First tee time approx 4.30pm. The match would be followed by a one course supper ( fish and chips, lasagne or similar ) at a cost of approximately £8.00. Non playing guests are invited to join the golfers for supper. All are welcome. The detailed format of the match and the individual competition depends upon numbers playing and will be confirmed later. At this stage we need an expression of interest and an indication of which day would be best for you. Millennium Green Trust The North Kilworth Millennium Green is a beautiful space in our village which is open to all to enjoy. It is maintained by a group of volunteer trustees who willingly give up their time to organise events, help with maintenance and fundraise. The NKMG does not receive any funding other than what is raised by the trustees- the two main fundraising initiatives are the 100 Club and annual BBQ in June. This March we are having a drive for new members of the 100 Club it only costs £5 per month with a chance of winning up to £1100 through the year. Monthly prizes are £50 and £25 with an additional annual Christmas prize of £500.
