A Little Romancing in a Grey Month?…………... Before long it will be schools half-term. The holiday when it can be snowy and bright or mild and damp with indoor activities needed. So far the weather men seem to think we will be staying mild and wet, which may not be your choice, but has to be good for someone? There are as usual lots of indoor activities in Leicestershire if the weather is inclement, such as at the National Space Centre and many local museums are hosting special events. We also give notice to all those inclined to forget: 14th February is Valentine’s day!! The shops may be stuffed with overpriced red hearts, cards, flowers and chocolates but a little bit of romancing usually goes down well.

We try to be impartial with letters to the editors and apart from sending them to the Parish Council for viewing before publishing, we print what we receive. It’s good to have people using this as an open forum for airing concerns, please keep sending them in, positive observations very welcome.

Dear Editors Am I, and my wife the only Parishioners in North Kilworth getting extremely fed up with the excellent Parish Newsletter, being used as a forum for the Vincents, et Al. We all know, by now, the stance they have taken concerning development in the village, so why each month do we have to endure their constant griping, moaning and negativity. Please Editors, can we have a break for a few months, and more usefully use the space for the more positive aspects of village life, and in particular, attempt to repair the damage caused by some of the more ill advised and thoughtless comments made over recent months. Kind regards, Chris Knight. Dear Readers, I apologise to readers and the Parish Council for certain statements contained in my letter to the North Kilworth News last month. Unfortunately my comments were based upon downloading the "Revised" North Kilworth Development Plan (from January 2016) believing that it was the Plan submitted after the June 2016 Ballot in the village. This was a mistake, I should have downloaded the Revised, Revised" edition.(September 2016). I therefore, humbly offer my apologies for this error and some of the resulting statements I made. However, the underlying message of my letter remains, and that is, by not opposing the development south of Station Road the Parish Council has opened the floodgates to a developer who has clearly stated that they "reserve the right to future development of the two-field site". It is the message I have tried to get across over the past year and now I am aware I have failed miserably to move the Parish Council on this matter and that our village is in danger of seeing extensive expansion and its character changed as a result. I am also saddened for the many residents of Elmcroft Road, and others in the village, who feel so unrepresented and not listened to by their local Councillors on the issue of opposing development south of Station Road. It is they who will now witness, over the next few years, one of the most beautiful views in our village disappearing before their eyes. I am very much aware and applaud much of what our Parish Councillors do for this village, but I'm afraid on this issue of New Housing it has been handled poorly. Once again my apologies for my error. Summary of Our Parish Council Minutes 12th January 2017 1.Declarations of interest on items on the agenda Cllr Green declared an interest in planning application 16/01939/ FUL and left the room during consideration of this item. 2. Items Held Over From the Meeting Held On 24th November 2016 Emergency Plan – Cllr Otter has updated the contacts list and the Emergency Plan is now complete. Cllr Green will provide the Clerk with an inventory of all items in the emergency kit and relocate the kit to the Sports Club. The Clerk will issue a rota for the Parish Council to check the kit on a monthly basis. Speeding concerns - Cllr Bettles is to relocate the speeding device to Station Road. The Parish Council will record the data including traffic flow on Station Road and compare with historic data. The police have confirmed that the mobile speed detection team have visited North Kilworth on ten occasions in 2016. It was agreed to purchase a pack of 100 speed reduction wheelie bin stickers to issue to residents of Station Road at a cost of £96.00. J19 Completion Schedule – The Clerk is waiting for responses from HDC/LCC as to when highways work will be undertaken at the marina development site. Planning Enforcement – The operators of the auction rooms on the Evergreen Field Farm, Pincet Lane site have been contacted by the enforcement team at HDC due to unauthorised change of use. HDC have given the operators 28 days to apply for retrospective change of use. 3 Question time for parishioners A parishioner enquired whether there is any way to make a claim for the impact the J19 work has had on North Kilworth. The Parish Council felt this was unlikely at this stage but will refer the enquiry to District Cllr Lesley Bowles. A parishioner noted that the impact of traffic flow on North Kilworth is going to be significant with the proposed Misterton development and the proposed extension of Magna Park. The Clerk will contact District Cllr Lesley Bowles and County Cllr ,lGraham Hart to discuss. 4. Planning to consider the following applications 16/01896/FUL – Erection of a two storey side extension (including the erection of a dormer window and roof light to the rear) – Carew, 10 Cranmer Lane – RESOLVED: The Parish Council

Letters to the Editor ctd Dear Editors, I noticed that there was a service in the Church on Christmas day and was glad I went. The Church was warm and welcoming with plenty of people of different ages and visitors too. It was also lovely to see the Elizabethan chalice for the first time ever which, I understand, has recently been retrieved from some dusty old bank vault through the dogged determination of the Church council. I would like to thank the members of the Church council, the Churchwardens and their supporters who work so hard and without seeking praise for their work in maintaining our Church services. “Post - Truth………………..?”

“So do we now live in a ’post truth society’ where we are drip-fed with mediagenerated stereotypes and narratives?”

Generally at the start of a New Year, I have a sense of anticipation about emerging possibilities. This New Year, my mood has been coloured by the recent experience of two examples where electorates have been treated with complete disdain and contempt, where emotional manipulation has deliberately been used to play on fear and prejudice and thereby win votes. It is hardly surprising that in opinion polls politicians are now rated low in trust, following the disgraceful performance of some of them in both the Brexit referendum and the US presidential election. Commentators, trying to make sense of these two “shock results”, speak of our culture now embracing a “Post-Truth” world-view…where media and other opinion-formers deliberately and consciously play on fears and preconceptions and compose a narrative which corresponds not to ‘facts’ but to prejudice. Drip-feeding notions that benefit fraud is the cause of our ills while ignoring the

massive tax-avoidance industry, that all asylum-seekers are benefit scroungers and potential terrorists/rapists etc. etc. has a corrosive effect not only on social cohesion but on our ability to trust those parts of the media that are responsible for these outrages. A YouGov poll published in January 2013 found that, on average, people estimate that 27% of social security is claimed fraudulently, as opposed to the true figure of 0.7%...where does that misconception come from and who feeds it?

Whatever one’s views on Brexit or Donald Trump or anxieties about the forthcoming French presidential election, is there even an awareness of this momentum towards a populist surge, and what can be done by way of resistance to the notion that we have to capitulate to a post-truth worldview?

How does the Christian community live with integrity its conviction that ‘Truth’ is ultimately personal… rooted in the very nature of God…a Truth which calls us constantly in every generation and So, do we now live in “a postcontext to live as signs of truth society”, where we are contradiction, at individual and drip-fed with media-generated stereotypes and narratives? In communal level, with the dehumanising values around such a world, debate becomes us? The one who preaches the airing of feelings, fears and the values of the Kingdom, prejudices, with less and less expressed in the Beatitudes, room for calm and reasoned extolling poverty, simplicity, exploration of empirical evidence. Recipe of the Month - Date & Cashew Energy Bars

These bars are so yummy it’s hard to believe they’re good for you! Packed full of protein, fibre, and no refined sugars, they’ll give you a guilt-free morning boost. There are loads of great, healthy ingredients, in particular, hemp packs an impressive nutritional punch. It is the perfect protein - it contains all 20 amino acids, so that includes the 9 essential amino acids that our bodies can’t produce. Hemp seeds also offer omega-3 and omega6 fatty acids which promote cardiovascular health and naturally balance your hormones. And they’re rich in soluble and insoluble fibre which will reduce your

mid-morning sugar cravings so you’ll be able to cut out those trips to the vending machine! Makes 8 bars: Date bar base 40g cashew nuts 100g dates 10g pumpkin seeds 10g sunflower seeds 10g de-hulled hemp seeds 40g fine oats 5g linseeds 5g chia seeds 1 tbsp molasses 1 tbsp agave syrup 1 tbsp coconut oil Cashew nut centre 50g cashew nuts 50g cashew nut butter 35g fine oats Method: First make the base by adding all the ingredients listed into a food processor and blend until it becomes a sticky mass.

Form the dough into one big ball and then, using a rolling pin, roll out to about 5mm thickness. Trim around the edges so that it forms a rectangle. Cover and refrigerate to firm up. Next, make the centre in pretty much the same way as the base. Add the cashew nut butter, cashew nuts and oats to the food processor, and blitz until it forms as one. Take out the base from the fridge and cut it in half. Now spread the cashew nut mix over one half, and place the other half on the top to form a sandwich. Kilworth House Theatre 2017 As in previous years I have been able to make a corporate village booking for the 2017 summer productions at Kilworth House Theatre. Any complementary tickets that I am given are converted to cash and donated to the Village Hall so the village as a whole benefits from the evening. Any unreserved tickets for Kiss Me kate have now been returned to the Theatre However, I do still have tickets for ‘Top Hat' on Saturday 26th August. Tickets are £40 each. I do not need firm numbers or payment for this show until April but if you think that you may want tickets let me know asap. This will enable me to reserve more tickets if necessary. The booking of Corporate tickets has changed slightly this year in that rows F G and H in the centre aisle are not available. The majority of my reserved seats are in the centre aisle rows K L M and N with some side seats just adjacent to the centre aisle from row G - M. Green fingers After January, we are glad to be into this month with signs of the new coming spring in sight. Bulbs will start to appear, the wildlife wakes up, and the light levels and temperatures start to increase. There’s plenty of prep work to be done indoors, and outside as the garden comes to life again, it’s time to prune shrubs and climbers. Top Ten Tips for February: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10.

Chit potato tubers. Prepare vegetable seed beds, and sow some vegetables under cover. Net fruit and vegetable crops to keep the birds away. Protect the blossom on apricots, nectarines and peaches. Prune winter flowering shrubs that have finished flowering. Divide up bulbs ready for planting. Prune Wisteria. Prune evergreen hedges and overgrown deciduous hedges. Prune conservatory climbers. Cut back grass left uncut over the winter and remove dead grass from evergreen grasses.

North Kilworth Women’s Institute At the January meeting members were wished a Happy New Year by our president, Beryl Stephens. We were then given a talk by Mike Beech from the Foxton inclined plane Trust who talked us through the history of our local canal, showing photographs of various places and people who were involved with the building and maintenance of the canal up until the 1990s. Members were given details of the dinner which this year is at the Coach and Horses, Lubenham on Tues 21st February. If there is any member who was not present at the meeting but wishes to be included, the menu is shown below. Cost is £24 (inc tip) for 3 courses – pre chosen - and we meet there at 7pm.
