Race 2 has been a great experience: Deepika Padukone Deepika Padukone says the actionpacked Race 2 also has dollops of glamour, and says shooting for it has been a great experience. “It has been great. ‘Race 2’ has been a wonderful journey for me. I am very proud of it. The movie is an action thriller, but it also has a lot of glamour. The first film of the franchise did well too,” Deepika said on the sidelines of the launch of a new skin cream BB by Garnier, here Friday. The actress says the movie is important to her, and she will readily devote adequate time to its promotions. “Race 2 is very important to me, and even its promotion is very important as well,” she said. Deepika says she shares a good camaraderie with her Race 2 coactors; Saif Ali Khan and John Abraham. “Saif and I have worked before so that comfort level comes. The same is true for John too,” she said.

Glamorous roles too need acti Deepika Padukone

For Deepika, it is important that not only her role is appreciated but the film also does well at the box office. “When you set out to do a film, one hopes that your performance is appreciated and the film also goes on to do well. Fortunately with me, in Cocktail, I got both. The film did well and the performance was appreciated. I hope this happens in all my films,” she said.

“I think the role is more important. It is a misconception that a glamorous role doesn’t require acting talent. It’s a bit strange, because I think at the end of the day, any kind of film -- whether it is glamorous or ‘deglam’ (non-glamorous) requires acting. Acting is acting,” Deepika told IANS in an exclusive interview. The 26-year-old actress made her Bollywood debut with Om Shanti Om and has since been part of successful films such as Bachna Ae Haseeno, Housefull,

Directed by Ayan Mukerji, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani also stars Ranbir Kapoor and Kalki Koechlin.

I can say that I have been the busiest in my career because I am juggling three films at a time. But I think I know how to conserve my energy, I know where to conserve it and spend it. I think things like my diet, workout, exercise, the water I drink and products I use add to me looking and feeling better,” she said.

Gujarat polls : Modi slams Rahul Gandhi

Gujarat election result: Narendra Modi pulls off hat-trick, will it be Rahul vs him in 2014? AHMEDABAD / NEWDELHI: “You should now get used to hearing me speak in Hindi,” Narendra Modi told the adulatory droves, gathered to celebrate his emphatic victory, when they insisted he speak in Gujarati. The sudden switch to Hindi for someone who spoke in little else but Gujarati throughout the election campaign led to an obvious interpretation - Modi, having scored a hat-trick, was now flashing his fortified claim to be the BJP’s choice for prime minister in 2014, thus setting the stage for a presidential-type race with

Rahul Gandhi in the Lok Sabha polls. Although Modi said he did not plan to camp in New Delhi and would visit the capital only for a day on December 27 for the National Development Council meet, his devotees were already serenading him with “desh ka neta kaisa ho, Narendra bhai jaisa ho” chants. Modi won 115 seats, just a couple short of his previous tally of 117 seats in the 2007 election. Modi’s victory came against the backdrop of indifference, even opposition, from a section of the RSS, hostility of an influential and tenacious faction of the civil society and Congress’s tacit understanding with BJP

rebel Keshubhai Patel who sought to rally his community against the chief minister. His Dabangg-3 act instantly triggered a clamour from the rank and file of the BJP and the Sangh Parivar for outfitting him as the prime ministerial candidate for the 2014 Lok Sabha elections: something that will pit him in a direct contest with Rahul, who is expected to be given a bigger role. Printed placards declaring Modi the next PM surfaced in Ahmedabad on Thursday as soon as trends indicated a BJP win, indicating that his supporters had written the script for his acquiring a bigger role in national politics even before the results were out.

Bhopal gas tragedy : On 28th Bhopal anniversary, Compensation demanded for vict

Bhopal: As the city observed the 28th anniversary of the Bhopal gas disaster Monday, various organisations working for the cause of the people affected by it held rallies while criticising the government for not doing anything for the victims. Even after 28 years the disaster, no one has been punished for it and the victims given only inadequate compensation, ``It’s back to square one. We will go back to the Supreme Court again,’’ says N D Jayaprakash of the Bhopal Gas Peedith Sangharsh Sahyog Samiti, which is one of the victims’ organisations spearheading the struggle.

Australias Community Magazine

Stung by the injustice of this paltry compensation, the victims had approached the apex court, which had approved the 1989 agreement. It was only in 2004 that the Supreme Court admitted a plea by gas victims seeking to reopen the compensation issue. Three years later, in 2007, the court rejected it, asking the victims to approach the state government. The gas leak from Union Carbide’s pesticide plant in Bhopal in 1984 killed an estimated 20,000 people and left over 5.69 lakh people with a range of injuries and disabilities. In 1989, the Supreme Court approved a settlement between the central government and Carbide under

which the company agreed to pay $470 million (Rs 713 crore in the exchange rate of the day) as compensation and the government agreed to drop all civil and criminal proceedings against it. Criminal cases against Union Carbide officials too are still pending after they were reopened in 1991. A non-bailable warrant against Warren Anderson, chairman of Union Carbide was issued in 1992 by a Bhopal court but remains unserved. Anderson was arrested three days after the disaster and bailed out immediately, after which he fled the country never to return.

Nagpur is most difficult wicket I have played on : England batsman Kevin Pietersen on Thursday said that the slow-paced pitch prepared for the fourth and final Test in Nagpur is the toughest he has played on as far as scoring runs in concerned. “It’s toughest wicket I have played Test cricket on in terms of scoring runs. I don’t have a clue what the pitch will do later. Its playing pretty similar to what it did at the start of the day,” said Pietersen after the first day’s play. Pietersen, whose 73 in 198 minutes off 188 balls is the top score in the tourists’ end-of-day first innings score of 199 for five, said his team was in a reasonably good position but the runs doesn’t mean anything until the game is over. “Like I said after the runs in Mumbai, it doesn’t mean absolutely nothing until the game is over. “I think we are in an okay position. I don’t know what that pitch will do later but it’s slow. I think the key today was to try to bat as long as possible because I don’t think that wicket is

getting any better,” said Pietersen. The England batting stalwart sounded happy that his team had two seam bowlers to bowl on this pitch, as he thought it was very difficult to score runs off Ishant Sharma, the home team’s lone pacer in the playing XI. “I think we are in a position of strength, if I am allowed to say that, as we have two seamers. I found Ishant incredibility difficult to play today,” said Pietersen. Jadeja, on the other hand, had claimed that the Indian team’s strategy of playing four spinners, including himself as a frontline bowler, would pay dividends in the second England innings as they can use the bowlers’ footmarks to extract spin more and more.

Monsoon Wedding to make Broadway debut in April 2014 Mira Nair doesn’t work on the same subject twice. But, in the case of her acclaimed

film Monsoon Wedding, she is making an exception. She is converting the film into a musical that makes its Broadway debut in April 2014. She is currently in India to record songs for it, with music being scored by Vishal Bhardwaj. Speaking to TOI, Mira said, “The songs propel a musical. We are creating 12 songs for the musical. We’re done with six songs and I am here to record four. There are also two-hour reprises from the movie. A Punjabi rock band from New York called Red Baraat will perform the music live on stage. It’s all very hard, detailed work because it is live. We are finishing the creative work now.” She adds that she is visualising the musical as a complete spectacle. “The film is about upstairs and downstairs — the upper class and the working class — so, I’m translating that on to the stage by having Dubey (originally played by Vijay Raaz) and his sidekicks as aerial actors. They will be above us because they are fixing the tents as we speak down below,” she says. While casting hasn’t started yet, Mira says she will definitely take a couple of stars from India. Initially, her plan was to debut the musical in India and then take it abroad. But, now, the plan has changed. She says, “After Broadway, Inshallah, we will come here for Diwali. That’s my dream.”

Helena Bonham Carter is said to be among the cast currently filming and will apparently reprise her role as the villain Bellatrix Lestrange. The short film will reportedly be shown at ‘The Wizarding World of Harry Potter’ at Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida. The movie will also be made available at two new parks that are currently under construction, one of which will open in California in 2014 and another in Japan in 2016.“The shooting schedule is nowhere near as long as the films, so though filming has been intense, the stars have enjoyed being able to pop in and out,” the source added.

Fashion

Fashion has come a long way from the time when sporting two contrasting trends together was akin to committing a sartorial crime! Today, mixing and experimenting with two or more seemingly opposite styles can open up your wardrobe to dozens of new options.

12 fashion combos that work wonders While there are no fixed rules when it comes to merging different patterns, prints, silhouettes or colours, you want to make sure that when you do so, you highlight the USP of each trend, even if it means thinking out of the box and straddling the fashion fence! With a little confidence and a few smart choices, you can transcend your fashion sense to a whole new level. Patiala & Pumps

If fusion fashion is your calling, take a cue from a leading designer’s collection and add a western touch to your traditional patiala salwar, by teaming it with a short jacket kurti and pumps in pastel shades!

Gold & Nude

You can’t go wrong with this combination. Pick any shade of nude for your dress and detail it with dainty metallic gold embroidery or embellishments to create a glamourous cocktail dress.

Sports luxe & colour blocking

If loud prints and patterns aren’t your thing, don’t sweat it. Wear smart colourblocked sports staples instead, to bring out the best of the sports luxe trend.

Peter pan collar & Polka dots

A Peter Pan collar on a polka dot dress is a classic combination the world over. But combine these two hugely popular trends by sporting a polka dot Peter Pan collar on a plain dress. Femininity personified!

Leaf print & petal skirt

If you want your wardrobe to have a nature-inspired outfit, choose a blouse with a leaf print and team it with a girlie petal skirt. But instead of using the usual shades of green, opt for a monochrome palette.

Dress & shorts

Loose, long shorts over a drop-waist dress sounds like a tricky mix-andmatch look to pull off but it can make a drab dress look quirky. Do away with accessories for this one.

Floral & military

While wearing a ditzy floral print dress, think out of the box and add an androgynous touch, by carrying a khaki bag. Alternatively, you can wear a well-fitted military jacket.

Sheer & applique

Strategically-placed cutwork appliques on a solid-coloured sheer fabric can enhance any dull-looking outfit. The applique can be knit, woven or printed. Make sure the garment is semi-transparent and in the same colour as the applique.

Ombre & peplum

This unique peplum dress was a winner on the ramp, especially because of the ombre scheme, which is a subtle alternative to colour-blocking.

Handkerchief hem & sheer

Looking for an asymmetrical sillhouette? Find a dress with a handkerchief hemline in a sheer fabric. This combo is not for pear-shaped women.

Long jacket & playsuit

Designers gave jackets a twist by combining long jackets with playsuits and shorts. You can do the same by opting for sheer fabrics, with embroidery or applique for your jacket.

Tribal print & neon

Make tribal prints eye-catching by wearing them in vibrant neon hues of yellow, indigo, orange, pink and electric blue, instead of dull earthy tones, to give a nostalgic yet contemporary touch to your ensemble.

Fashion You totally love handbags and cannot do without one. Not just because its design and colours are perfect, but because it’s super convenient, functional and handy for your busy schedule. What your bag says about you The Clutch

Women who love carrying clutches love elegance and class. Just the way she has a tight grip on her bag, so it is with things that are close to her heart. She is a confident woman and a headturner. The Bowling Bag The Satchel

Fans of this type of sling bag are soft of heart but firm and professional when it comes to other matters. The soft look of the bag is reflected in the friendly personality of the wearer. They are dreamers by nature and have big ideas that they want to pursue with a solid plan in mind. As the bag is not big, the owner knows exactly what she wants.

A woman who loves Bowling bags has a strong personality and is a no-nonsense woman. She does not follow trends and has a very distinct personal style. Her day is a happy mix of work, friends and family. She has a grip on whatever she undertakes, is a loving person and always has friends by her side.

The Hobo

Like the bag, which is typically large and can accomodate everything, the woman carrying it too is a practical chick with a lot going on in her life. More often than not, curiosity takes the better of her. She has a wide range of hobbies and interests and does not like complacency or stagnation. Those who love Hobs have an artistic bent of mind and are brimming with ideas. They also have an eye for perfection.

Choosing the right shade

Although it’s a personal choice, one should be careful of certain colours that make your hands and feet look darker. Opt for those that enhance your complexion. The current trends suggest Hawaiian colours like neon pinks and oranges, fluorescent greens and yellows and funky peaches and plums. They go very well with Indian skin tones.

Even if you sweat it out at the gym regularly, sitting for long hours and working without a break can put you at an increased risk of diabetes, heart disease and obesity, a new study has claimed.

While regular exercise is beneficial, it doesn’t reduce the risks of a sedentary lifestyle, found the study, published in the International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity, the New York Daily News reported. "We all know someone who gets a good workout in every day, but then spends a large portion of their day sitting in front of a computer with few breaks," said Lynette Craft, lead author of the study and adjunct professor of preventive medicine at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago. "If these people could replace some of the sitting with light activity just getting up, moving around, maybe standing up when talking on the phone, walking down the hall instead of sending an email we do think they could gain health benefits," Craft said. The study looked at whether women who exceed the federal government's current Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans getting at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity a week are less sedentary than those who don't meet the guidelines, the report said. While many of the women in the study met or exceeded 150 minutes of physical activity per week, in reality only a fraction of the women's days were spent being physically active. T h e women in the study

Australias Community Magazine

spent an average of nine hours a day sitting. That number is consistent with previous results from much larger studies that examined the number of hours Americans spend sitting every day. Emerging research has led health experts to believe that sitting is the new smoking, and women and men both need to be mindful about being couch or desk potatoes. "I think some people assume, 'If I'm getting my 30 to 40 minutes of physical activity a day, I'm doing what I need to do for my health," Craft said, noting that people now sit even longer than they sleep. "Of course, exercise is very important and is associated with many positive health benefits, but negative health consequences are associated with prolonged sitting, and this study shows that just because you're physically active doesn't mean you're sitting less," Craft added.

5 Ways to Cut

Your Heart Attack Risk Finding out what puts you at risk for a heart attack can help you learn what precautionary steps to take in avoiding one.

Recognize the symptoms One study of 30 women younger than 50 who’d had heart attacks found that most failed to realize they were having one, mistaking it for fatigue, indigestion, stress, or overexertion.

Learn your family history

Diabetes, heart disease, strokes, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure all can run in families, hiking your risk. (In fact, having a mother or father with early heart disease can raise your risk by 25 to 50 percent.) If you know risks early, you can address them early.

Exercise

Health

Women are more at risk of dying from a heart attack than men, partly because we don’t recognize the symptoms, which can be more subtle than the cinematic heart-clenching ones typically seen in men.

By Laurie Tarkan

Eat right

Eliminate saturated and trans fats from your diet, and replace them with antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables. A 2009 Harvard study found that women whose diets most closely resembled the Mediterranean one—more vegetables, beans, nuts, and monounsaturated fats, and less meat—had a 29 percent lower risk of heart disease, compared with those whose diets were least like it.

Do at least 30 minutes of moderateintensity exercise every day and weight-train twice a week to lower your percentage of body fat. Exercise alone can reduce your risk of heart attacks by 35 to 50 percent— and we’re not talking boot camp here: Women who gain the most benefit are those who were relatively inactive before beginning regular moderate exercise.

Quit smoking

You’re still at increased risk up to five years after quitting, but the risk steadily decreases. Having trouble quitting? Talk to your doc about the latest strategies.

Know your numbers

If you have no known risk factors, keep your BMI below 25, LDL cholesterol at 130 or below, HDL at 50 or above, total cholesterol at 200 or below, triglycerides at 150 or below, and your waist circumference smaller than 35 inches. Turns out your waistline is really important: Research suggests that having a larger waist size, even if you’re not obese, may be a predictor of heart disease in women.

Create a livable bedroom for

yourself

The average person spends around 3000 hours a year in their bedroom, and while, admittedly, a lot of that time is in the dark, that’s an awful lot of time to spend in one room.

Bedrooms should be more than a place to sleep. They are an opportunity to create a haven from the world, somewhere that relaxes and refreshes you, and they should be as individual as you are. Here are some bedroom ideas to get you dreaming...

Romantic Choose pale colours and light fabrics for a pretty, romantic look to your bedroom. Antiques look good with this style, and the more battered, the better. Pick an old fashioned bed, and cover it in pretty bedding in floral prints or applique. Keep walls soft with pastel shades, colour wash looks nice, and hang soft voile or lace at the windows. Keep floors wood or plain carpet, with rugs, and add a pretty beaded chandelier or lamp to finish.

Australias Community Magazine

Clean If you prefer Gap to Laura Ashley, the clean minimalist look may be best for you. Simplicity is the key, with walls painted in cream or white, and plain flooring. Furniture should also be simple, but in bold interesting shapes. Use plenty of wood, but add a touch of chrome for a modern look. Choose unfussy bedding in crisp white linen, soft jersey, or denim. Keep the room light, and put away all that clutter!

Opulent If you’re the dramatic sort and you want your bedroom to make a luscious statement, you’ll love this look. Walls are rich vibrant colours plum, red or deep pink. Fabrics should be really tactile, velvets, satins and silks. Choose a dramatic style bed, in wrought iron, or dark wood. Pile the bed up with glamorous cushions and finish up with a deep pile carpet to sink your toes into. Natural Indulge your nesting instincts with a natural style bedroom. Nothing should grab the eye; everything should work quietly together to create a calming space. Use soft natural shades of cream and brown, and choose furniture in materials such as wood, bamboo and rattan. Floors should be wooden, or carpeted in neutral shades, or some natural flooring such as sea grass matting. Use cottons and linens for blinds or curtains and bedding, and add some accessories in wood and stone. Candles add a soft touch to the look.

The Pradise on Earth

Set like a jewelled crown on the map of India, Kashmir is a multi-faceted diamond, changing its hues with the seasons always extravagantly beautiful. Two major Himalayan ranges, the Great Himalayan Range and the Pir Panjal, surround the landscape from the north and south respectively. They are the source of great rivers, which flow down into the valleys, forested with orchards and decorated by lily-laden lakes. The Mughals aptly called Kashmir ‘Paradise on Earth’ where they journeyed across the hot plains of India, to the valley’s cool environs in summer. Here they laid, with great love and care, Srinagar’s many formal, waterfront gardens, now collectively known as the Mughal Gardens. Anecdotes of four and five centuries ago describe their love for these gardens, and the rivalries that centred around their ownership. They also patronized the development of art & craft among the people of Kashmir, leaving behind a heritage of exquisite artisanship among thes people and making the handicrafts of the land prized gifts all over the world.

SEASONS

Kashmir has four distinct seasons, each with its own peculiar character and distinctive charm. These are spring, summer, autumn and winter. Autumn- the onset of autumn,

perhaps Kashmir’s loveliest season, is towards September, when green turns to gold and then to russet and red. The highest day temperatures in September are around 23oC and night temperatures dip to 10oC by October, and further drop by November, when heavy woollens are essential.

Spring-

Winter-

which extends roughly from March to early May, is when a million blossoms carpet the ground. The weather during this time can be gloriously pleasant at 23oC or chilly and windy at 6oC. This is the season when Srinagar experiences rains, but the showers are brief.

from December to the beginning of March is winter time, which presents Srinagar in yet another mood. Bare, snow-covered landscapes being watched from beside the warmth of a fire is a joy that cannot be described to anyone who has not experienced it. Some houseboats and hotels remain open in winter-these are either centrally heated or heated with ‘bukharis’, a typically Kashmiri stove kept alight with embers of wood, quite effective in the winter.

Summer- extends from May until the end of August. Light woollens may be required to wear out of Srinagar. In higher altitudes night temperatures drop slightly. Srinagar at this time experiences day temperatures of between 25oC and 35oC. At this time, the whole valley is a mosaic of varying shades of green - rice fields, meadows, trees, etc. and Srinagar with its lakes and waterways is a heaven after the scorching heat of the Indian plains. GULMARG

Tourism

Gulmarg’s legendary beauty, prime location and proximity to Srinagar naturally make it one of the premier hill resorts in the country. Originally called ‘Gaurimarg’ by shepherds, its present name was given in the 16th century by Sultan Yusuf Shah, who was inspired by the sight of its grassy slopes emblazoned with wild flowers. Gulmarg was a favourite haunt of Emperor Jehangir who once collected 21 different varieties of flowers from here. Today Gulmarg is not merely a mountain resort of exceptional beauty- it also has the highest green golf course in the world, at an altitude of 2,650 m, and is the country’s premier ski resort in the winter.

The journey to Gulmarg is half the enchantment of reaching there-roads bordered by rigid avenues of poplar give over to flat expanses of rice fields interspersed with picturesque villages. Depending on the season, nature’s colours could be the translucent green of spring, summer’s rich emerald, or autumn’s golden hues, when scarlet chillies festoon windows of village homes. After Tangmarg, the climb to Gulmarg begins through fir-covered hillsides. At one point, known simply as View Point, travelers generally stop their vehicles for a few minutes and look out a spectacle of snowcovered mountains, almost within touching distance.

PAHALGAM - The Valley of Shepherds. Situated at the confluence of the streams flowing from Sheshnag Lake and the Lidder river, Pahalgam (2,130 m) was once a humble shepherd’s village with breathtaking views. Now it is Kashmir’s premier resort, cool even during the height of summer when the maximum temperature does not exceed 250C. A number of hotels and lodges cater to all preferences The most and budgets, from luxurious hotels beautiful to unpretentious trekkers’ lodges. of these is Pahalgam has within it no fewer than eight tiny villages, one of which is Mamal. There is a Shiva temple here, generally considered to be Kashmir’s oldest existing temple, dating to the 5th century.

"According to the legend, somewhere in the valley, there is a well whose water turns any substance into gold. This is 'Sonamarg' means 'Meadow of Gold'."

SONAMARG -

The Meadow of Gold.

The drive to Sonamarg is through the Sindh Valley which presents yet another spectacular facet of countryside in Kashmir. Situated at an altitude of 2730 m, Sonamarg (‘The meadow of gold’) has, as its backdrop, snowy mountains against a cerulean sky. The Sindh River that meanders through the valley abounds with trout and mahaseer. Ponies can be hired for the trip up to Thajiwas glacier, which is a major local attraction during the summer months. Sonamarg is the base of a major trek that passes along several mountain lakes –Vishansar, Kishansar, Gadsar, Satsar and Gangabal. Sonamarg is also the take off station for the drive to Ladakh across the Zojila, a major pass in the Great Himalayan Range, through which the Srinagar-Leh Road passes. Sonamarg is also a base for undertaking the yatra to the holy Amarnath cave, during Sawan Purnima.

Kashmir is a land where myriad holiday ideas are realised. In winter, when snow carpets the mountains, there is skiing, tobogganing, sledgeriding, etc. along the gentle slopes. In spring and summer, the honey-dewed orchards, rippling lakes and blue skies beckon every soul to sample the many delights the mountains and valleys have to offer. Golfing at 2,700 m above the sea, water-skiing in the lakes and angling for prized rainbow trout, or simply drifting down the willow fringed alleys of lakes in shikaras and living in gorgeous houseboats are some of the most favoured ones. Srinagar, is the summer capital of the state of Jammu and Kashmir, and is located in the valley of Kashmir at an altitude of 1,730 m above sea level. The city lies on both banks of the Jhelum River, a tributary of the Indus River. The Dal and Nagin lakes enhance its picturesque setting, while the changing play of the seasons and the salubrious climate ensures that the city is equally attractive to visitors around the year. The city is famous for its lakes and houseboats floating on them. It is also known for traditional Kashmiri handicrafts and dry fruits. Srinagar is 876 km north of Delhi. Srinagar has several tourist attractions; some of these are the Dal Lake, the Nagin Lake, Shankaracharya Hill, the Hari Parbat Hill that is situated on top of the Sharika Hill and the Charar-e-Shareif shrine, which is situated on the way to Yusmarg. The Dachigam National Park is situated at some distance from Srinagar. There are several travel packages for those interested in visiting Srinagar. Srinagar also offers adventure sports facilities for tourists to Kashmir.

Many tourists are attracted to Srinagar by the charm of staying on a houseboat, which provides the unique experience of living on the water in a cedarpanelled elegant bedroom, with all the conveniences of a luxury hotel. Srinagar’s thousand or so houseboats are moored along sections of the Dal and Nagin Lakes and river Jhelum, each decorated fancifully and named romantically and even whimsically. Like hotels, houseboats vary in degree of luxury and have been accordingly graded by the Department of Tourism.

HOUSEBOATS IN KASHMIR When we think of Kashmir, the first thing that comes to our Mind is “Houseboats”. Staying on a Houseboat means like living in Paradise, an experience one is not likely to find anywhere else on the surface of the earth. Every standard houseboat provides a balcony in the

front, a lounge, dining room, pantry and 3 or more bedrooms with attached bathrooms. All houseboats not moored to the bank of the river or lakes provide a shikara as a free service from the houseboat to the nearest ghat (jetty). Virtually every houseboat in Srinagar has been provided with a municipal water connection.

Kashmiri Culture and Craft The arts and crafts of Jammu and Kashmir have recognition all over the world and everyone in the state is affiliated to this occupation in one way or another and is the major economic sector of the state. Kashmiri handicrafts are prized everywhere for their exquisite craftsmanship. Kashmir carpets, in both wool and silk with their Persian design, are a lifetime investment and the shoppers’ selection range from the simple to the most extraordinarily intricate patterns handed down the generations. Then there are papier-mâché items ranging from jewellery boxes to mirror frames, a range of intricately carved walnut wood furniture and accessories, stone jewellery boxes, beautiful woollen shawls, crewel embroidery on furnishing material sold by the meter and more.

Festival

Kite Festival All over the country, Makar Sankranti is observed with great fanfare. However, it is celebrated with distinct names and rituals in different parts of the country. In the states of northern and western India, the festival is celebrated as the Sankranti day with special zeal and fervor. The importance of this day has been signified in the ancient epics like Mahabharata also. So, apart from socio-geographical importance, this day also holds a historical and religious significance. As, it is the festival of Sun God and he is regarded as the symbol divinity and wisdom, the festival also holds an eternal meaning to it.

Gujarat celebrates 2,000 festivals every year! Among these, the festival of Uttarayan is one of the grandest and stands tall. In Gujarat, Uttarayan is a holiday when every family can be met outdoors. People of all ages fly kites from dawn to dusk. Crowded rooftops, fun-loving rivalry to outdo each other in kite flying skills and delicious traditional Gujarati feast are the hallmarks of the day. As millions of kite enthusiasts pitch themselves at the rooftops, waves of flying kites overwhelm an otherwise deep blue sky. On January 14, watch the sky change colors... like a rainbow in a glittering sun after the rain and bask in the glory of Uttarayan, when the skies of Gujarat give way to colorful kites.

Makar Sankranti is a major harvest festival celebrated in various parts of India. According to the lunar calendar, when the sun moves from the Tropic of Cancer to the Tropic of Capricorn or from Dakshinayana to Uttarayana, in the month of Poush in mid-January, it commemorates the beginning of the harvest season and cessation of the northeast monsoon in South India. The movement of the earth from one zodiac sign into another is called Sankranti and as the Sun moves into the Capricorn zodiac known as Makar in Hindi, this occasion is named as Makar Sankranti in the Indian context. It is one of the few Hindu Indian festivals which are celebrated on a fixed date i.e. 14th January every year. Makar Sankranti, apart from a harvest festival is also regarded as the beginning of an auspicious phase in Indian culture. It is said as the ‘holy phase of transition’. It marks the end of an inauspicious phase which according to the Hindu calendar begins around mid-December. It is believed that any auspicious and sacred ritual can be sanctified in any Hindu family, this day onwards. Scientifically, this day marks the beginning of warmer and longer days compared to the nights. In other words, Sankranti marks the termination of winter season and beginning of a new harvest or spring season

There’s not a Gujarati in the world who doesn’t enjoy the sport of kite flying. So, now it’s celebrating in many countries and in australia also like Shree Swaminarayan Mandir Blacktown (ISSO – Sydney) organises the festival every year, there is such a huge turn-out. The first time it was celebrated was in Fagan Park, then for three years it moved to Parramatta Park, and then for the last two years the event has moved to the Blacktown sports ground.

This agricultural winter festival is celebrated throughout Punjab and in parts of Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Delhi and Jammu. The origins of Lohri are many and link the festival to the Punjab. Many people believe the festival began as a celebration of the eve of the winter solstice. With time, the festival spread to the states adjoining Punjab - Sindh, Jammu, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Delhi. Other communities also participate in the festival - such as the Bengali and Oriya communities. According to folk lore, in ancient Punjab Lohri was celebrated on the eve of winter solstice day. It is for this reason that people believe the Lohri night is meant to be the longest night of the year and on the day after Lohri, day light is meant to increase.

Lohri is traditionally associated with the harvest of the rabi crops.People take peanuts, rewri, flour, butter and various food items to places of religious worship to thank God for a good harvest.

This year a dazzling aerial armada of colourful cartoon characters, animals, flowers, fighter box and delta kites packed the skies above Sydney’s most famous beach. Organised by The Australian Kiteflyers Society, the event featured food stalls from all over the world, free dance workshops, puppet shows and kite-flying demonstrations. The vibrant and colourful kite festival marked with fun and gaiety d r e w hundreds o f devotees a n d visitors o f diverse faiths, cultures and a g e groups. It is full day event of fun and enjoyment for all. Everyone thoroughly enjoy the kite flying as well as the delicious food with a divine touch.
