BEIJING: Ahead of a once-in-a-decade leadership change in China, strategists in Beijing are scripting a new ‘Look West’ policy, giving primacy to ties with India while rebalancing Beijing’s decades old pro-Pakistan tilt to counter American influence. “The Americans are looking towards East and we look towards the West,” Wang Jisi, a Chinese strategist who worked closely with Chinese leaders including outgoing President Hu Jintao to reset the badly ruptured relations with India after 1962 conflict, said giving a rare insight into the thinking among the leadership. By West, Wang means the West of China, starting from India, the sprawling South and West Asia and beyond. “China ignored the West for long and it is time for rebalance not only for oil, natural gas but also very big economic opportunities,” he said, quoting recent studies that China’s trade with India and rest of Asia grew seven times faster than Beijing’s trade growth in recent years.

As China looks to reset its ties with India, he said Beijing’s “all weather” relations with Pakistan were no longer driven by the factor to contain New Delhi, but to prevent the Islamic militancy in Xinjiang, bordering Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. “We have to fend off extreme Islamic

terrorism from getting into China from Pakistan and we need Pakistan more like all weather ally,” he added. “Pakistan is increasingly getting weak. It is much less than GDP of India. I am sad about it,” he said.

In its flyer translated in Hindi, the Obama campaign lists out its achievements for the Asian American community and lashes out at Mitt Romney and his policies. The Hindi flyer argues that Obama has more than doubled the number of Asian-American federal judges. Obama appointed unprecedented number of (four) Asian-American cabinet members - Steven Chu (energy secretary), Gary Locke (the former commerce secretary), Eric Shinseki (secretary of veterans affairs) and Chris Lu (the cabinet secretary). According to the 2010 census, the tristate area of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut have the largest concentration of Indian-Americans in the US. More than half a million Indian-Americans live here. According to a recent poll conducted by the National Asian American Survey, an overwhelming majority of IndianAmericans support Obama. The new poll conducted among 86 Indian-Americans between September 21 and October 13, reported that 64 per cent of Indian-Americans are for Obama, eight per cent support Romney, and while 27 per cent is still undecided.

Obama and Romney reach out to Indian-Americans American community. The community, which numbers more than three million according to the latest census, is being reached through full page ads in local Indian-American ethnic newspapers. first Indian sportsman

"

Veteran cricketer Sachin Tendulkar was on Tuesday conferred with the membership of the Order of Australia for his service to India-Australia relations by promoting goodwill, friendship and sportsmanship through the sport.

"

t

The award was conferred on the 39-year-old master batsman by the Australian Arts Minister Simon Crean here. He was presented with a medal and a cricket stump. Tendulkar became only the second Indian after former Attorney General Soli Sorabjee to get the honour. Sorabjee was made an Honorary Member of the Order of Australia (AM) “for service to Australia-India bilateral legal relations” in 2006. Tendulkar is the fourth non-Australian cricketer to be made an Order of Australia AM, the other three being West Indian legends -- Brian Lara, Sir Garfield Sobers and Clive Lloyd. Lara was made an honorary member in 2009 while Lloyd was conferred with the award way back in 1985. Sir Garfield Sobers

got the award in 2003. Tendulkar is considered as one of the greatest batsman the game has ever produced with more than 30,000 international runs under his belt. He has scored 15,533 runs in 190 Tests besides a mammoth 18,426 runs in 463 ODIs. Australia minister Simon Crean said Tendulkar deserved the honour. “From the heart of the game in London to the streets of Mumbai and throughout the world, cricket unites people from many cultures. Cricket is Australia’s national game and one that we share a great love of with India. Our two countries embrace the game like nowhere else. “Today I am proud to have this opportunity to honour a great sportsman, a great cricketer, a philanthropist, and someone who has inspired a generation - Sachin Tendulkar,” Crean said. Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard had announced the honorary AM for Tendulkar when she visited India last month. “As the first batsman in international history to score 100 hundreds earlier this year Sachin Tendulkar’s record is second to none. Today we are honouring not just what he has done on the field of play, but also what he has done off it,” Crean said. “Along with his cricketing prowess, Sachin has contributed substantially to philanthropy and supports a range of charitable causes as well as sponsoring over 200 underprivileged children each year.

Bal Thackeray dies at 86; Shiv Sena appeals for calm

His immediate family including son and successor Uddhav, nephew Raj Thackeray and the top leadership of the Shiv Sena were with him at his Bandra residence, Matoshree, in his last moments. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh called up Uddhav Thackeray to express his condolences and has urged people to maintain calm and sobriety. Massive crowds of Shiv Sena supporters had gathered outside the Thackeray residence within minutes of the announcement, prompting calls of calm and maintaining peace from several Sena leaders. A large contingent of policemen has been deployed to keep the crowds under control. So far Mumbai is calm, though shops, restaurants and other establishments shut down in several areas earlier in the day, including the Sena stronghold of Dadar as also in Colaba. There were reports of auto-rickshaws and cabs refusing to ply in some areas due to fear of violence. Taxis will be off the roads today. Thousands of personnel from the M u m b a i Police have also been deployed across the city, since there is apprehension of some violence. Earlier, Sena leader Rahul Narvekar had

appealed for calm to all party supporters. U d d h a v Thackeray too had told Shiv Sainiks that "no damage should come to the name of Matoshree". The death was announced at about 4:30 pm in a brief statement by doctors from Lilavati Hospital who had been treating him. “He had suffered a cardiac arrest. We could not revive him despite our best efforts. He breathed his last at around 3:30 PM,” Dr Jalil Parkar, who treated the Sena chief, told reporters after emerging from the Thackeray residence. Mr Thackeray is survived by sons Jaidev and Uddhav, who is the executive president of the Shiv Sena, which Mr Thackeray founded in 1966. Hundreds of Shiv Sena supporters who had gathered outside Mr Thackeray’s home broke down and tried to console each other.

Ajmal Kasab hanged: A puppet's life ends on a string

Pakistani terrorist Ajmal Kasab exited this world as stealthily as he had entered Mumbai four years ago. The lone surviving gunman of 26/11 was hanged to death in Pune’s Yerawada jail at 7.30am on Wednesday in an extremely hush-hush operation. Asked for his last wish, the 25-year-old terrorist from Faridkot village in Pakistan’s Punjab province said: “Gharwalon ko milna hai (I want to meet my family members).” He was told the Islamabad government had been informed about his hanging but had failed to respond. As his hands and legs were tied, his last words, according to officials who witnessed the hanging, were: “Allah kasam maaf karna. Aisi galati dobara nahi hogi...(Allah, please forgive me, this mistake won’t happen again).” Sources said Kasab was babbling incoherently before the hangman pulled the lever at Yerawada, about 150km from Mumbai’s Arthur Road Jail, his home for four years. His body was buried in a pit in the prison premises as there were no claimants. He was convicted in May 2010 by a special judge for murdering seven people directly with his AK-47 and 65 others in common intent with fellow terrorist Ismail. He was also found guilty of being part of a Lashkar-e-Taiba conspiracy that led to 166 deaths. The Mumbai high court in February 2011 and the Supreme Court in August this year upheld the sentence.

Kai Po Che to have two music albums First, Kai Po Che took its name from a common Gujarati phrase used during Makar Sankranti (kite flying festival). Now, director Abhishek Kapoor (Gattu) has decided to release a separate music album for the film with only Gujarati songs in it. A source reveals, “Since the film is set in Gujarat, Amit Trivedi (music composer) visited around seven to eight cities there before he started composing the music of the film. Over there, he met a lot of folk artists.” The source adds, “Amit had several conversations with them about music in Gujarat and he even jammed with them. By the end of his trip, he had sourced several traditional Gujarati songs. He brought back the samples for Gattu to listen to.” And what was Gattu’s reaction? The source says, “He loved the music. But since the film’s music had to be in Hindi, there was no way he could’ve used them. So he kept one Gujarati song in the Hindi album, and for the rest, he decided to release a separate album only in Gujarati. This is the first time any film will have two albums in different languages.”

The filmmakers will first release the Hindi album, followed by the Gujarati album on Makar Sankranti on January 14. The source says, “The Hindi album will be released in Mumbai while the other will be released in Gujarat. But both albums will be available across the country.”

Shahid cancels shoot for brother!

Shahid Kapoor shares a special bond with younger brother Ishaan Khattar. Ishaan, 17, is Shahid’s mother Neelima Azeem’s son with husband Rajesh Khattar. In fact, Shahid and Ishaan are so close that they even acted together in the film, Vaah! Life Ho Toh Aisi (2005). On November 1, it was Ishaan’s birthday and Shahid had a packed schedule. But the fact that he couldn’t meet Ishaan was bothering him. So he eventually decided to cancel all his appointments for the day, even though he had just started shooting for Phata Poster Nikhla Hero with Rajkumar Santoshi, and spend time with his brother. A source close to the actor says, “Shahid loves Ishaan and makes it a point to be there for him. Even a few days ago, when Ishaan was performing at a show for Shiamak Davar, Shahid took time out from his rehearsals and attended the show. He didn’t only sit through Ishaan’s part, but stayed for the entire evening.” The source adds, “On Ishaan’s birthday, they did all the things Ishaan loves and called all his friends too.” Shahid even took Ishaan and his friends for a spin in his brand new red Jaguar. A spokesperson on behalf of Shahid says, “Shahid is extremely close to his younger brother, so he took the day off.”

Ishaan Khattar is mostly an “OUT” standing student, Ishaan had a way with all his class mates and especially the girls who were always on his side. No surprises he is all set to get into the movies. Will he make it as big as his brother? Will he sweep the ladies off their feet? We don’t know but he definitely has flair for language and is witty with the words. Often late to school he somehow got away with it all and looked like he was having a ball learning, loving and being the most popular one around. Can he shake a leg? Or get those box office register ringing? We’ll let his moves and movies do all the talking.

Sad about not shooting in Alps: Katrina Kaif

Katrina Kaif, who was looking forward to romancing her Jab Tak Hai Jaan co-star Shah Rukh Khan in a song sequence to be shot in Switzerland for their upcoming film, is disheartened after filmmaker Yash Chopra’s demise. A portion from the unfinished song was to be shot in Switzerland, a country whose scenic beauty has been captured in many of Chopra’s films. The filmmaker was to travel to Switzerland this month but got hospitalised for dengue fever on October 13. He passed away on October 21. Katrina was to wear a white chiffon sari, designed by Manish Malhotra for the song. “It is sad that we did not get to shoot it. We had zeroed in on one sari out of the 12 that were designed. I remember him (Chopra) saying that it will be a party when we shoot in Switzerland,” Katrina said during the press conference of Jab Tak Hai Jaan. “We had planned the sequence of the song....how it will be shot in cold water and all of that. It is unfortunate that I won’t be able to do it,” she added. Shah Rukh, who has worked with Chopra in several films, says a small portion of the song that remains to be shot will not be shot as it would not match the vision of Chopra. “Just a minute and a half portion of the song was to be shot in Switzerland. We will make it impure if we shoot for it now,” Shah Rukh said. The film is directed by Chopra and also stars Anushka Sharma.

Dark stripes make you look slim Panels, patterns & cut-outs-fashionforward stars are opting for innovative ways to flaunt that ‘it’ figure Out with the spanx! The latest in the slimming business is the dark stripe running down the side of your outfit.

"

It’s no rocket science but optical illusion and it has caught the fancy of Hollywood A-listers like Miranda Kerr and Melanie Griffith. Such is the craze that a British retail chain has been compelled to launch a £16 version of a pair of beige denims with a black panel running down its sides. The advantage? Your legs look slimmer and elongated. The panels are cheekily used in problem areas like the obliques and inner thighs too — women’s major gripes when it comes to their shapes. The gals ain’t complaining! T Alternatively, patterns help create the illusion of curves where there are none. Ever wondered how pencil-thin celebs like Victoria Beckham and Jennifer Aniston get away with it? Clever cut-outs at the right places also add meat to a thin frame and enhance those already blessed with killer S-curves. It is not only the structure of your body that makes you look thin or fat but,

also your dress. The way you dress also describes your physical traits. You pick up clothes depending on your body type and personal choice. You must be knowing that short skirts can make you look thin and tall. Stripes also describes your body shape. If you want to look thin, check out which stripes can do that. Vertical Stripes: Many people believe that vertical stripes can only make you look fat. But the fact is, vertical stripes can make you look thin if worn with the correct colour coordination. Verticals stripes create an illusion of height. While horizontal stripes make you look broad, vertical makes you look tall and slim. Wear well fitted vertical stripes with a plain colour to give the illusion of a thin and tall figure. For example, wear a slimfit vertical strip shirt with a plain coloured pant for the perfect and stylish look! Accessorise with belts and neckpieces to distract attention from the figure towards the accessories. Horizontal Stripes: There is a speculation by many fashion designers that horizontal stripes can make you look thin but there are few ways in which you can wear horizontal stripes to look thin. Wear horizontal stripe dresses that can make your body look

perfectly shaped. Flowing gowns or one piece dress in horizontal stripes can make a woman look thin and tall. Go for dark colours in this fabric pattern to look thin. Make sure your clothes are well fitted. Team up with high heels to create an illusion of thin and tall figure. Horizontal stripes with round neck or collar can make you look fat. Opt for semi-fit flowing silky fabric rather than hugging or baggy ones. Diagonal Stripes: This is a selective fabric pattern that can make you look thin. Diagonal stripe dress both in dark and bright colours can look great. And you can go for diagonal stripe dresses to look thin and well shaped without much of an effort. While you are dieting to lose weight, opt for such fabric patterns to look slim. Stripes can make you look thin. Do not forget to accessorise it to create a special effect. But fabric pattern varies from person to person. Different body types are well flattered with either of these stripes. However, a tip to remember is, wear thin stripes. Thick stripe pattern can make you look broad, heavy and short.

Tips for Damage-Free Hair colouring and too much heat styling (be it your trusty dryer or those wonder-curlers and flat-irons). What aggravates the damage are unhealthy hair habits such as excessive fiddling, brushing, tight hair accessories and even a rough-and-hurried towel rub to get those locks dry. Using a battery of poor quality hair care and excessive sun exposure also add to hair woes.

Preventive tips

Those 100 brush strokes, that antidandruff medicated shampoo, countless trips to the salon to get the ‘right’ colour —unknowingly many of us damage our hair to the point that simply needs to be chopped off. Hair damage is not always ‘visible’ to the eye — symptoms include hair that’s dry and dull, limp locks that refuse to look bouncy, split ends, an itchy scalp, weak hair that often breaks off, hair fall (from the roots) and/or hair that feels rough and scaly to touch. Simple mistakes often cause hair damage. The more obvious ones include too many chemical treatments such as perms, rebonding and

Australias Community Magazine

Dr Rohini Wadhwani, medical director, Skin Essentials, shares a few tips to ensure your hair remains damage-free.

1. Always use a hair care range suited for your hair type. If you colour your hair on a regular basis, use a colour-protective range that not only locks in the hair colour and keeps your hair glossy, but also repairs hair strands inside out by filling in the gaps left by broken hair protein.

2. Gentle combing to get the tangles out is fine as is blow-drying on the coolest possible setting on your hairdryer. 3.

thoroughly a week before the colour treatment to ensure as much damage prevention as you can.

4. While shampooing the colour off, use lukewarm or tepid water. Hot water will strip even more moisture from your hair, making it dry and lifeless. 5.

Keep a gap of at least a month between colour applications and try to use semi permanent colours as opposed to permanent.

Go Fibre-Active

Hair damage exists not only on the outer layer where the oils can be stripped but also in the heart of the hair strand, where chemicals, sun and ill-treatment can break the protein bonds of the hair, making it weak and porous. Fibre actives fill in those gaps giving you noticeably smoother, shinier and tangle-free hair after just a few washes. Fibre actives basically repair the damaged hair protein in the heart of the hair. This makes your hair smoother to touch, reduces flyaways and gives you frizz-free and tangle-free hair

You glow, girl. The key to taking your natural makeup to the next level is a gorgeous glow. Our secret weapon: shimmer and highlighting. The liquid luminizer looks like a nail polish, and the brush gives great application control. Folklore of heroism and romance resound from the formidable monuments that majestically stand to tell the tale of a bygone era. The magic of vibrant Rajasthan - its rich heritage, colourful culture, exciting desert safaris, shining sand-dunes, amazing variety lush forests and varied wildlife - makes it a destination nonpareil. Rajasthan is often portrayed as one vast open-air museum, with its relics so well preserved that it delights even the most skeptical traveler. It is an incredible destination for the outdoor-tourist – take a safari on horses, camels, elephants or even in jeeps, with the Aravalis - India's oldest mountain range as the backdrop. Feast your eyes on spectacular sand-dunes, take the tiger trail, or just watch the birds in the wetlands. You can also choose to pamper yourself in the lavish heritage properties. Rajasthan has something for everyone – one just has to choose an activity appropriate to one's temperament. Hinduism, the religion of most of the population, is generally practiced through the worship of Brahma, Shiva, Shakti, Vishnu, and other gods and goddesses. Nathdwara is an important religious centre for the Vallabhacharya sect of Krishna followers. There are also followers of the Arya Samaj, a reforming sect of modern Hinduism, as well as other forms of that religion.

Rajasthan has a rich tradition of cuisines – for this land of princes had some of the finest cooks in the palaces. The common-folk also took epicurean delight in the culinary art. Aptly has it been said that the royal kitchens of Rajasthan raised the preparation of food to the level of a sublime art. It is not surprising therefore that the ‘Khansamas’ (the royal cooks) who worked in the State palaces kept their most prized recipes to themselves. Some recipes were passed on to their descendants and the rest were passed on as skills to the chefs of semi States and the branded hotel companies.

The history and art of the region just cannot be appreciated unless you visit and experience the culture of Rajasthan.

Christmas (Old English: Crīstesmæsse, meaning “Christ’s Mass”) is an annual commemoration of the birth of Jesus Christ and a widely observed holiday, celebrated generally on December 25 by billions of people around the world. A feast central to the Christian liturgical year, it closes the Advent season and initiates the twelve days of Christmastide.Christmas is a civil holiday in many of the world’s nations,is celebrated by an increasing number of non-Christians, and is an integral part of the Christmas and holiday season.

Christmas has had a long and varied history. It has been celebrated for centuries by different people, at different times, in different places, and in many different ways. The early Christians who were the hunted feet in the Roman Empire could not celebrate the birth of Jesus and under compulsion had to practice their religion in secret because Christianity in Rome had grown up in blood and tears. To publicly profess their religion meant grave risks to life and many a time resulted in death punishments. As such events connected with the life of Christ were commemorated by fasts, prayers and rites but not by public celebrations. But after the conversion of Emperor

Constantine to the Christian religion in 4th century A.D. that creed, professed by a few secret groups of enthusiastic believers was transformed into the religion of vast masses of humanity in Europe, Western Asia and North Africa. Christmas Day is celebrated as a major festival and public holiday in countries around the world, including many whose populations are mostly non-Christian. In some non-Christian countries, periods of former colonial rule introduced the celebration (e.g. Hong Kong); in others, Christian minorities or foreign cultural influences have led populations to observe the holiday. Countries such as Japan, where Christmas is popular despite there being only a small number of

Christians, have adopted many of the secular aspects of Christmas, such as gift-giving, decorations and Christmas trees. Countries in which Christmas is not a formal public holiday include China, (excepting Hong Kong and Macao), Japan, Saudi Arabia, Algeria, Thailand, Nepal, Iran, Turkey and North Korea. Christmas celebrations around the world can vary markedly in form, reflecting differing cultural and national traditions.

a i d n I n i n o i t bra e l e C s a m t s i r h C Christmas is the most important festival of Indian Christians. Christians in India decorate banana or mango trees instead of traditional pine tree. They also light small oil-burning lamps as Christmas decorations and fill their churches with red flowers. As a part of their celebration they give Christmas gifts to their family members and token of money to poor people as charity. People decorate their houses and churches with poinsettia flowers for the midnight mass. In South India, the Christians put small clay lamps on the rooftops and walls of their houses at Christmas, just as the Hindus do during their festival called

Diwali. In Goa, all hotels are jampacked during Christmas period and one must plan well in advance if planning a stay in one of the Goa hotels. The local Indian customs and tradition and customs have a heavy impact on the Indian Christian. And this is visible in their decoration as many Indian Christians decorate their houses with mango leaves. Churches often have an Evening Service on Christmas and are fabulously decorated with poinsettias and candles

People often spend Christmas Day with family members or close friends. Christmas Day falls in the middle of the summer school holiday and both December 25 and 26 are public holidays.

Hence, many people celebrate the event away from home, in holiday parks, on camp sites or at relatives’ homes. In the weeks before Christmas Day, many people decorate their homes with Christmas decorations. These often include a Christmas tree, candles or small electric lights, glass baubles, tinsel, snowmen, fake snow and figures of Santa Claus in his red fur-trimmed outfit. Typically Australian decorations are also used. These are glass baubles or wooden ornaments decorated with images of

Australian wildlife, such as bilbies, koalas, king parrots, Waratah flowers, or Australian landmarks. Small statues of native animals dressed in ‘Santa’ hats and sleighs pulled by groups of six white kangaroos are also popular, as are figures of Santa Claus in beach clothing. On Christmas Day, children hope to receive gifts in a stocking or under the Christmas tree from the mythical figure Santa Claus. In the weeks before Christmas, they write letters to him so that he knows what they want. In some stories, Santa Claus wears a thick red, fur-trimmed suit and travels in a sleigh pulled by reindeer. In others he wears shorts and a loose, brightly colored shirt and his sleigh is pulled by six white kangaroos. In some families, individual members also exchange gifts.

Festival

Christmas Day falls on December 25 and is an occasion for Christians to celebrate the birth of Jesus. Many people, even if they are not Christian, give each other gifts, prepare special meals and decorate their homes at this time of year. Many aspects of the Christmas celebrations originated from winter celebrations in Europe. However they are increasingly influenced by the Australian climate and wildlife.

a i l a r t s u A n i y Christmas Da Background and symbols

On Christmas Day, Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus. Different denominations have a range of traditions and types of Church service around Christmas Day. Catholics often attend midnight mass, which starts at midnight as Christmas Eve leads to Christmas Day. Other denominations attend special church services during the day on December 25. There are a number of native Australian plants that include “Christmas” in their popular names. This is usually because they flower during the Christmas period. Examples include: Christmas bells, Christmas Bush, the Christmas tree and the Christmas orchid.

Adding more yogurt to your diet may help lower risk of high blood pressure, according to a new research.

"

A study presented at the American Heart Association’s High Blood Pressure Research 2012 Scientific Sessions found the long-term yogurteaters were less likely to develop high blood pressure and on average had lower systolic blood pressure than those who didn’t eat yogurt. Systolic blood pressure is the top number in a blood pressure reading. It measures the force of blood against the walls of arteries when the heart is beating. During the 15 year study, researchers followed more than 2,000 volunteers who did not have high blood pressure at the start of the study. Yogurt consumption was measured by questionnaires filled out by the volunteers at three intervals over the study period, researchers said in a statement. Study participants were 31 per cent less likely to develop high blood pressure if at least 2 per cent of their daily calories came from yogurt, which would be like eating at least one sixounce cup of low-fat yogurt every three days. In addition, their systolic blood pressure increased less than that of people who didn’t eat yogurt

“Green tea is a popular beverage across the world,” said Yun Bai, professor from the Third Military Medical University, Chongqing, China. “There has been plenty of scientific attention on its use in helping prevent cardiovascular diseases, but now there is emerging evidence that its chemical properties may impact cellular mechanisms in the brain.” Yun’s team focused on the organic chemical EGCG, (epigallocatechin-3 gallate) a key property of green tea. While EGCG is a known antioxidant, the team believed it can also have a beneficial effect against age-related degenerative diseases, the journal Molecular Nutrition and Food Research reports. “We proposed that EGCG can improve cognitive function by impacting the generation of neuron cells, a process known as neurogenesis,” said Yun. “We focused our research on the hippocampus, the part of the brain which

processes information from short-term to long-term memory.” The team found that ECGC boosts the production of neural progenitor cells, which like stem cells can adapt, or differentiate, into various types of cells. The team then used lab mice to discover if this increased cell production gave an advantage to memory or spatial learning, according to a Medical University statement. “We ran tests on two groups of mice, one which had imbibed ECGC and a control group (without ECGC),” said Yun. “First the mice were trained for three days to find a visible platform in their maze. Then they were trained for seven days to find a hidden platform.” The team found that the ECGC treated mice required less time to find the hidden platform. Overall the results revealed that EGCG enhances learning and memory by improving object recognition and spatial memory.

Making a Christmas

Paper Lanterns

"

" .

Here is the sug gests ways to g o 1. Cut it out: You will need a frame around which you can decorate. Use a cardboard to cut out five or more large diamond shapes, depending on the size of the lantern you want to make. Tape the sides of each at the edges and make a pentagonal, hexagonal or octagonal shape, according to your preference. Instead of cardboard, you can also use stiff magazine covers.

about it:

2. Coat it: Soak some tissue paper in glue or Fevicol and water. Using a thick paintbrush, coat the cardboard frame from outside. This gives a wonderful texture and also provides a surface on which you can stick beads and other paper cut-outs while decorating. 3. Tape it: If you don’t think glue is a safe option for kids, opt for double-sided tapes; they are safer and more convenient. Using a double-sided tape also renders a 3D effect to the lamps. 4. Recycle: For the decoration, instead of cutting out patterns on chart paper, use old greeting cards. Take an old greeting card and cut out the pictures of diyas, candles, fireworks and the likes, and paste them on the lantern. This will instantly make it more attractive. 5. Glitter and shine: Kids love to play with shiny stuff. So, instead of using synthetic glitter paint, go with tinsels, sequins or colourful ribbons to decorate. You can also add fancy buttons.

Australias Community Magazine

6. Personalise it: Alternatively, tape old family photographs to the lantern for a collage look. You can also draw a film-strip pattern using black poster colours around the pictures.

Story Time The Snowman

It was nearly Christmas. Katie woke up and found that the world was white and magical. “Snow!” she shouted, “Snow for Christmas!” She ran outside and danced in the snow. Her brother Eddie came out too. They made a big round snowball and a small one. They put them together and made a huge snowman. On Christmas Eve they looked at the snowman. He waved at them. He was alive! “Hello.” he said. “It’s Christmas. Would you like a present?” “Yes please!” they said. The snowman waved his arms. Silver crystal snowflakes filled the sky. It was so beautiful. “We must give you a present too,” said Katie. They gave the snowman a carrot for a nose, a scarf for his neck, and a hat for his head. “Happy Christmas!” they said. The snow stopped and the sun came out. The snowman started to melt. “Goodbye” he said. “Build me again next year!”

SANTA C

Bobble was a little reindeer for Father Christmas, but he had only just turned 3 months old so he still didn’t have any antlers. Bobble was the only one of Santa’s reindeer that couldn’t fly, for if you didn’t already know, the reason why Father Christmas’ reindeer can fly is because their antlers are magic. Little Bobble was always dreaming that his antlers had grown and that Santa Claus had picked him to pull the sleigh and take the toys to all the children’s houses. But then he would wake up and realise that it was all a dream and that his antlers still hadn’t appeared. One morning when Bobble woke up from his dream, Father Christmas was sitting beside him: “Santa” cried Bobble, “I had the same dream Australias Community Magazine

again. I dreamed my antlers had grown and that I could go with you to deliver the presents, but they still haven’t grown…” Father Christmas replied: “Don’t worry, Bobble. You’ll see that your dream will soon become reality. You just have to be patient a little longer.” That same night when Bobble was asleep, Santa Claus crept up to his bed and picked him up very carefully so as not to wake him. Then he put him gently on the back seat of his sleigh, though he nearly woke up, for Santa Claus bumped into one of of the harnesses of his flying reindeer. That night was very special, for it was Christmas Eve when Santa Claus would put on his red suit and go from house to house delivering the presents that the elves had spent a whole year making. Everything was ready – the sack with the toys ready and waiting – so Father Christmas mounted his seat with little Bobble in the back. “Ho ho ho!” cried Father Christmas and the reindeer leapt into the sky. And it was just at that moment that Bobble woke up to see them soaring high in Santa Claus’ sleigh. Father Christmas turned and said to Bobble: “You see, little reindeer, it won’t be long before you’re flying my sleigh. But you don’t need to wait for those antlers to appear for your dream to come true.” And that was how Bobble learned that we must have more patience, for if we want dreams to come true we just need a bit of effort and perseverance. www.indoausietimes.com.au

Now, however, someone is due to enter your life who’ll teach you not just to trust, but also to trust yourself again - to trust your intuition, even though you’ve tried, recently, to do just that, and it hasn’t worked out too well. Give it another shot. you must cut away anything in your life that makes you feel unsure about yourself, whether it’s a personal relationship, a job that makes you unhappy, or a lifestyle that no longer suits you. A great love is about to come your way, whether you’re already attached and quite happy, or single and looking for a whole new relationship. Either way, someone will inspire you to open up your whole heart to them, and once you’ve done that, you’ll find a new side of yourself - the side of you that’s willing to say “I do.” That may mean cohabitation, marriage, or simply a totally unconditional profession of love. don’t hang on desperately to what’s in your life now. The more fervently you hold on, the more determined the card of Death will be to take it away from it. Embrace this change, and don’t be afraid.

Virgo

20 February - 20 March

The card of Judgement indicates the ending of several matters - the happy ending, that is. First of all, and most important to you, will be the fact that you’ll actually be ready to come together with “an other” to find your perfect match - the kind of person that you deserve. Don’t be doubtful, or worry that they’re not quite right. Trust your instincts and know that your long trek is over. Listen to your body and your spirit will grow stronger.

When the card of Death arrives, something is definitely coming to an end. The good news is that while most folks see this and fear that their life, or someone else’s, is what’s coming to an end, that’s not at all what this card signifies. Contrary to popular opinion, what Death truly indicates is simply change. Granted, it will be a tremendous change - but change, after all, is what life is all about. Don’t be scared. Be invigorated.

Over the next month, you’ll be called upon (again) to do the right thing - for yourself and for others, too. You’ll righteously stand up for anyone who needs you, keep your promises, and look for the deeper meaning in all situations. All these quests will be brought to you courtesy of The Pope, who insists on nothing less than that you follow your conscience and always do what you know is fair and honorable.

Horoscope

Leo

July 24 – August 23

The words “If you loved me, you would,” are quite powerful - even if you know they’re being recited by someone who only wants you to buckle to their will. It’s not just you, though. When any of us cares for someone, we want to make them happy. If we’re involved with someone who’s willing to play on our generosity and kindness, they’ll see those traits as weaknesses, not strengths. Resist being exploited. The good news - no, the absolute best news you could possibly hear now - is that after all this time of searching for who you really are, you’re about to “find yourself.” Now, that may sound silly to others, but you know what it means. You’ve been trying over several months, if not longer, to find out who you really are, but recent events have proven to you that you already know!

23 November - 21 December

A great love is about to come your way, whether you’re already attached and quite happy, or single and looking for a whole new relationship. Either way, someone will inspire you to open up your whole heart to them, and once you’ve done that, you’ll find a new side of yourself - the side of you that’s willing to say “I do.” That may mean cohabitation, marriage, or simply a totally unconditional profession of love., the one thing you will need to avoid is the tendency to overdo, in all departments, from food and drink to staying up late, chatting with a lover - or soon-to-be lover. Try your best to moderate.

Capricorn

22 December - 20 January

It’s time for you to take on the qualities of introversion, seclusion, and thinking seriously about the reality of a romantic situation. If you’re not happy or satisfied, The Hermit can mean a relationship is about to end, or has really already ended. More so, however, it can indicate a time of increased trust, when two people actually need to allow each other time to be alone, without any unfounded suspicions.

Aries

21 March - 20 April

When The Emperor appears, seated on his throne, staring out at you, there’s really only one thing to do: start thinking about the structure of your relationship. If you two have built your partnership on solid ground, he’ll be no threat to you. In fact, he’ll make those bonds even stronger. If there’s a chink in the relationship’s armor, however, it’s definitely time to talk it over and fix it. Something you never expected will come along, when you least expect it. You have spirit guides and angels guiding you. Pay heed.
