Former US President Bill Clinton speaks for Barack Obama at Democratic Party Convention

O

n a relatively quiet day on the campaign trail, former President Bill Clinton stumped for President Barack Obama at a university in Miami on Tuesday, urging young people to register, then vote come November. Appearing at Florida International University, Clinton called the election pivotal, saying, “If you sit on the sidelines, you are responsible for the consequences.” “I keep reading that young people are not as sure as they were four years ago that they’re going to vote,” he said, going on to reference his speech at the Democratic National Convention last week. “I tried to argue down in Charlotte last week that that’s a bad mistake, we’ve got a lot of reasons to vote and we’ve got a good candidate to vote for, and we need to get out here and do that.” As he did at the DNC, Clinton defended Obama’s record on issues such as the economy, federal budget, and health care. Recognizing that Tuesday was the 11th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, Clinton spoke about his own experience with the tragedy, plus that of his daughter and wife, who was then a U.S. senator from New York. The former president said that his remarks were appropriate on Tuesday because the day is “being honored by service projects all over America, by people trying to be good citizens. “And the most important thing that I can say today, before I get into my remarks on behalf of the president, is you just have 27 days to register to vote in Florida,” he continued, adding it would “honor the people who have worn the country’s uniform” to “be a good citizen.” “The least we can do is show up and vote,” he said. “And when people try to discourage you from voting, which is happening in a lot of these voter changes all over America, it should redouble your determination to vote.” Clinton was also on the offensive against Obama’s GOP challenger, Mitt Romney, and Republicans in general. He characterized Republican attacks that Obama had “robbed” funding from Medicare as “peddling that old dog. “ “It’s a mangy old dog,” Clinton said. “It’s not true.”

young Indian engineer decided to pursue his MBA in China. A number of his friends were surprised as that’s not a country many would think of as a b-school destination. Well, Ravi Mittal had his reasons (read his story). Like him, hundreds of thousands of Indian and other overseas students have related stories ‘The Chinese treat me like a movie star’ sopted for the Middle Kingdom that boasts of an economy in trillions of dollars. According to the Chinese embassy in New Delhi, the numbers have “obviously” jumped up in the past five years. The embassy and other official sources state that, in 2011, 292,611 international students, including 9,800 Indians, chose to study in China. The year before, 265,090 candidates from 194 countries and regions did so. The countries with the largest representation were Republic of Korea, the United States, Japan, Thailand, Vietnam, Russia, Indonesia, India, Kazakhstan and Pakistan. The Dragon craves more. continent, the country has launched a 10-year plan to have Asia’s largest international student population – half a million, including 150,000 pursuing degrees – by the end of this decade.

By Mansoor Iqbal, Education Writer Chinese students are well known for their willingness to travel abroad to study. In the 2009/10 academic year, the last year for which statistics are available, an estimated 1.27 million of them were doing so, most of whom (over 90%) relied solely on private funding. This number is likely to continue increasing for the foreseeable future, as more and more Chinese students enrol at foreign universities every year (the 2009 figure of 285,000 represents a 24% increase on the previous year).

“China’s Ministry of Education (MOE) will make further efforts to optimise the environment for international students, improve management and to upgrade education quality, by adhering to the National Outline for Medium and Long Term Educational Reform and Development as well as the Study in China Plan, aiming at attracting 500,000 international students by 2020 so as to make China Asia’s biggest host country for international students,” according to the China Scholarship Council website. Different experts have publicly voiced scepticism over the “ambitious” expansion plans. Sreemati Chakrbarti, a professor at Delhi University’s department of east Asian studies, does not. “For China, nothing seems too ambitious. Maybe they’ll lower the tuition fees, increase the number of courses taught in English, get foreign faculty,” says Chakrbarti, who specialises in Chinese politics and education. Authorities have already set the ball rolling to boost its education sector. According to one report, the country would expand the scholarship programme for overseas students, with “at least” 1.5 billion yuan ($238 million) worth of scholarships in 2012-

Facebook deleting fake 'likes', independent data suggests

Facebook has begun deleting fake page “likes”, independent data suggests. According to Pagedata, many of the site’s most “liked” pages suffered large drops in numbers on Wednesday. The move follows the social network’s admission that 8.7% of its users are not “real”, many having been set up by spammers who use them to artificially make pages appear more popular. The issue poses a problem for Facebook as it seeks to expand its targeted advertising service. Facebook’s shares have slumped from their initial public offering of $38 (£23) in May to $20.62 on Thursday. In a blog post written in August, Facebook said: “A ‘like’ that doesn’t come from someone truly interested in connecting with a page benefits noone.” Technology news site The Verge, citing Pagedata’s statistics, noted that some of the most popular pages on Facebook had suddenly shed significant numbers of users. Facebook would not confirm to the BBC that the purge was happening, but could not provid an alternative

explanation for the drop in numbers. Shedding fans Earlier this year, an investigation by BBC technology correspondent Rory Cellan-Jones highlighted some shortcomings in Facebook’s “like” system. His fake company, Virtual Bagel, which used Facebook’s targeted advertising programme, attracted more than 1,600 “likes” - despite having neither products nor interesting content. Marketing experts argued that had Virtual Bagel been a real company, using Facebook advertising to gain these likes would have been a waste of money. At the time, Facebook told the BBC that there was no “significant” problem But later, a blog post announced an impending crack-down on illegitimate activity. Facebook reassured users that impact would be minimal. “On average, less than 1% of ‘likes’ on any given page will be removed, providing they and their affiliates have been abiding by our terms,” the company said. “These newly improved automated efforts will remove those ‘likes’ gained

by malware, compromised accounts, deceived users, or purchased bulk ‘likes’. “While we have always had dedicated protections against each of these threats on Facebook, these improved systems have been specifically configured to identify and take action against suspicious ‘likes’.” The aim of the tweaks was to provide “more accurate measurement of fan count and demographics” to brands that use the service to advertise their products or services. Promoting online engagement with brands is a key component of Facebook’s business model, in which it uses key information - such as age, gender and location - to target certain advertisements at specific recipients. However, this system is increasingly coming under threat from a black market of fake “likes”, sold in bulk in order to falsely boost a brand’s figures. A simple search brings up a host of websites offering large numbers of Facebook fans or “likes” - as well as followers on Twitter and views on YouTube

Lawrence says she spent three days thinking she would say no to playing Katniss Everdeen, the hero of the action franchise set in a post-apocalyptic North America where teens are forced to fight in televised death matches. The 22-year-old actress said she had envisioned remaining where she started, in smaller independent films, and was worried about how the franchise might change her life. She ultimately agreed to do The Hunger Games because she loved the character and story, Lawrence said in an interview over the weekend at the Toronto International Film Festival, where her comic drama Silver Linings Playbook premiered.

First, I shoot all night and get on the plane and then get pushed,” tweeted Preity, who landed here Sunday from Prague. The actress came back to the city after shooting in Prague for her debut production “ Ishkq In Paris”. Photographers are said to have been stationed at the airport as Hollywood star Ashton Kutcher was expected to be there. However, the cameramen spotted Preity in a super casual look, wearing loose lowers and a T-shirt, her hair undone, and no make-up. Media has flashed pictures of Preity hiding her face behind her hand, hair and staff, but Preity says she wasn’t “hiding”. “Pushed and jumped on at the airport. It was raining, so I

The 37-year-old, whose car was damaged by paparazzi outside international talk show queen Oprah Winfrey’s party in January, is angry. “If photographers ask me politely I will oblige, but next time I will either attack someone or then file a police complaint because THIS IS NOT FAIR. I am a human being not some animal in the zoo! If my security would have pushed them, then news would report my staff assaulted the media,” added Preity. She is only thankful that the shooting for “Ishkq In Paris” is over. “Otherwise I’d be hopping around with a twisted ankle,” she wrote, adding that she cared to give her side of the story on a social networking platform as “Every story has two sides”.

Fashion What’s in this season is the return of some bold and outstanding looks with bright red lipsticks and dramatic eye shadow. If you are the person who usually goes for a minimalistic make-up look of natural colours then trying on the more dashing options for lipstick, liner and shadow can really get some attention for the right reasons. If you are thinking of going to bold look and have tried it out at home or a couple of times in the mirror it might not look at stunning and glamorous as you might have thought. For many first timers, in fact the end result can commonly leave them looking much like a clown. Here are some simple tips and guidelines that can help correctly apply and maintain this kind of style that will surely bring in come complements and confidence.

Dramatic Make-up Looks Tips Only Isolate One Feature

Keep Everything Generally Healthy

A well known principle among beauty and makeup gurus is never to go bold on all of your features. Cherry lips, plum eye shadow and bright crimson blush will make everything stand out and this is probably why you’ve ended up looking like a clown. What you should do is pick one, usually the eyes, lips or hair to really accentuate and subdue the rest of your features with simple concealer or colours that are closer to your natural shades.

Just because you are not accentuating it doesn’t mean you can just leave it be. Don’t forgot to take care of oily and acne prone skin by washing, or covering the occasional pimple with light concealer to give the appearance of smoothness.

Good lighting will help you see exactly what you’re applying looks like. Any mistake will show up on a clear mirror in a well lit environment. The more you practice the more easy it will get, but having the right tools helps immensely.

Makeup tips for brown eyes Makeup tips for brown eyes almost always focus on dramatic eye makeup looks but it’s also easy to create visual interest with a natural look. Brown eyes tend to be naturally deeper in color and because of that you can wear the darker colors that other women have to pass on. Of course, there is no “one” brown color. Just as with other eye colors, there are different levels and these makeup tips for brown eyes will tell you which colors look outstanding on you and which to pass on. If you have hazel eyes you’ll find out which eyeshadow colors work especially well for you.

Check Your Make-Up Regularly

Unlike a nude or natural look, bold make-up will appear more out of place when it fades, smudges or feathers. Keep a small mirror in your purse or simply duck into the toilet to check that everything is in place and reapply product as necessary to maintain the make-up look.

Fashion

Use Clear Lighting

you want to use color, but in a subtle way then use it to line your eyes. Try dramatic looks or multiple colors on your eyes when you want something different.

3. Are your eyes light brown?

Light brown eyes are unexpectedly striking. Do you have golden flecks in your eyes? If so then remember to use a very pale yellow as a highlight. The one thing you need to be careful of is not to overpower your brown shade. Limit the darker shadows to use in the crease area. While other colors of brown might enjoy black eyeliner you may want to consider a dark brown instead.

4. Are your eyes so light they look hazel?

This is a level that looks great with colors that are just a little darker than your normal skintone would be. Champagne and mauve colors look great with hazel eyes. The key to making hazel really stand out is to line them with another color such as a violet, bronze or dark brown. Apricot or pink highlight works well with this color, too. Pass on black eyeliner because it tends to overpower hazel.

Your Universal Color

1. Are your eyes deep dark brown?

This is the darkest level of brown. In some women their eyes almost appear black. Most eye makeup colors that are in the medium to dark color range will work for you. The one problem this eye color has is that your eye makeup can sometimes look too dark or harsh. For that reason it’s important to use the lighter flecks of color in your eyes to select highlight colors. The contrast between the darker colors and highlight will set off your color best.

2. Are your eyes medium brown?

This is truly the easiest color of all to work with. You can wear any color. Mauves, violets and purples all look great on you. You can go the opposite and wear golds, coppers and bronzes. Greens look outstanding on you. If

Brown eyes, unlike other eyes, do not have an opposite or complementary color. This is because brown is actually a combination of the other colors. In other words, it contains blue, red and yellow. So, technically when it comes to eyeshadow makeup tips for brown eyes, most eye makeup colors work! Some women prefer to work with a mauve makeup palette. They feel comfortable with the color because they believe it is a naturally enhancing. It absolutely is! If you have hazel eyes then go with the lighter colors and use the darker ones as liner. Dark eyes can make those same colors even deeper by adding a little distilled water to powdered eyeshadow. Once you’ve chosen your eye color level with the makeup tips for brown eyes listed above then top it off with the right mascara. It really makes a difference for your color. If your eyes are hazel then go with dark brown, otherwise wear black. You really want your eyes to pop!

Fashion Varun Bahl’s Indian wedding line is

fter much anticipation and murmurs about celebrity showstopper, the couturier of the opening show of PCJ Delhi Couture Week, Varun Bahl, had his audience in thrall with his chic-meetsretro presentation of modern Indian wedding wear.

The venue, New Delhi’s Taj Palace Hotel was beautifully decked for the occasion with scented candles, mirrors, chandeliers and bouquets of lush white lilies. And like every first show of a fashion week, this one too did not begin on time. Though, one did not exactly mind as designers, models, socialites from Delhi’s page 3 circle, and whois-who guests among others started filing in for the show.

VARUN BAHL:Indian Fashion Designer

Theme:

Australias Community Magazine

With his line for Fall 2012-13, designer Varun Bahl attempted to merge the classic evergreens of old India with the outlook of modern Indian dressing tastes. Living up to the theme, the opening line had girls clad in black sheer net fineries with patches of embellishments around the hem and wrist take to the ramp. The attempt to break free from the traditional while retaining the charm of the old times with modern silhouettes, was unmistakable, and for this Varun deserves credit.

Collection:

It was a fine line up all the way from net, chiffon and crepe sarees, Achkan, Sharara, the Mughal Farshi, to the ubiquitous lehenga. In Varun’s words, “The collection is aimed not only at the Indian wedding, but also towards those who love to dress Indian with pride, but are looking for modern updates on traditional Indian silhouettes.” The use of black in the range made a bold statement since the underlying inspiration was Indian wedding where the use of black is forbidden. But the designer moved away from the notions associated with the colour and displayed a delicate, feminine collection of black see-through net Anarkali kurtas with embellishments on the sleeves teamed with parallel pants, asymmetrical kurtas with flowy capes, long velvet jackets over lehengas, sequinned chiffon sarees coordinated with a red bra that is in turn stitched to the dupatta of the saree, and short golden blouses with transparent net vests worn with layered, applique lehengas.

Colours and accessories: After a powerful opening with sheer black, the colour palette fades into lighter shades of cobalt to navy, olive, tulle, before it progresses to more festive hues like coral, fuchsia and reds. Golden stilettos with blingy heaps of golden strings dangling from either side, chandelier earrings and hair tied in a neat bun was the way the girls were accessorised. Glitzy front row:

All of Varun’s designer friends including socialites turned up in full force to witness the first show of the highly-touted Delhi Couture Week 2012. Apart from Sunanda

Pushkar, designers Payal Jain, Manav Gangwani, Poonam Bhagat, Anamika Khanna, Rohit Gandhi and Rahul Khanna were there to cheer for Varun.

Heart stopping moment... was when supermodel Jesse Randhawa strutted in wearing a red bra under a see-through black net vest teamed with a black chiffon Sharara with thick red hand embroidery on its hem. The truth is when the likes of Jesse Randhawa are on the ramp, one doesn’t miss not having a celebrity showstopper.

Ask Varun on his conscious use of black through the collection, and pat comes the reply, “Black adds a modern relevance to the timehonoured, traditional cuts and shapes this collection is based on. And I feel the inauspiciousness associated with it is only in the mind.” It was quite amusing how with each display the way of wearing the brassiere changed. How often should you eat? In our race to be the biggest loser, most of us go after different diets. The trusted and age-old threemeals-a-day concept works for some, while others swear by the new-age eight-meals-a-day. Most of us have been brought up on the notion that having untimely in-between meal snacks, is one of the major causes of weight gain. Of late, however, a number of trainers, nutritionists and dieticians have come up with the ‘six-to-eight-meals-a-day’ plan. And many Bollywood actors and actresses claim that following such diets have made them the biggest losers. They believe that in-between snacks help them stay slim and this regular intake also boosts metabolism. However, there are health gurus and trainers who believe that eating too many meals may just work against you and increase your weight. Read on to find out what the experts have to say...

Eat six to eight meals a day

Eat to burn! This can be one of the easiest and most reliable ways to ensure fat loss. Digestion itself is a calorie-burning activity. For every calorie you ingest, your body uses some to burn what you are eating. The question is, how do you make this wonderful feature of your body work for you? This is the essential principle behind the practice of frequent eating where eating at shorter intervals (six to eight meals a day or more!) enables your body to use more calories to aid digestion. When you constantly provide fuel to your body, it means you are also tickling your body to work. Keep working, keep burning. This is called the thermogenic effect of food and it is not only an incredibly smart

way of losing weight, it also helps you increase your BMR.

I like to call this the Internal Workout — because by continually making it work for digestion, you’re giving your body a workout. And while you may not be able to see the furious digestive activity going on in your body at any point in time, trust me, your body is working way harder than if you eat at longer intervals (three-to-four meals a day). - says Pooja Makhija, Consulting Nutritionist and Clinical Dietitian

More meals means less stored fat, Eating six to eight meals a day rather than three, is better because it boosts metabolism, controls blood sugar levels and helps in weight management. Consuming three meals increases the likelihood that one will start an exercise regime with a low blood sugar level. For instance, if we eat lunch around noon, generally our second meal of the day, we would not have much energy for an optimal, calorie-burning workout in the evening. On the other hand, if we follow a sixmeal-a-day plan and have a small meal around noon and another meal around 3 pm, our blood sugar level would be more stable, providing us with more energy for our workout. Cortisol, a hormone, breaks down body fat. However, if we eat a large, high-calorie meal, cortisol is produced in large quantities, but transports the fat from under the skin to deep within the abdominal cavity. This increases the risk of chronic diseases including abdominal obesity, heart disease and diabetes. Incorporating a six-meal-a-

day plan into one’s routine decreases the magnitude of cortisol production. Eating within 30 minutes of every exercise session enables our muscles to maximally replenish the glucose we used during the workout. Consuming another meal two hours after the postworkout meal further enhances postexercise recovery and replenishment. Eating every three-to-four hours can ward off hunger and prevent binges that lead to weight gain. It also maintains metabolism and can help regulate proper digestion to prevent gastrointestinal discomfort. When people consume the same number of calories in one single daily meal rather than three, they show significant increase in blood pressure, total cholesterol levels and levels of ‘bad’ LDL cholesterol. Eight meals increase our energy levels, accelerate muscle growth, and speed up our metabolism without storing fat. In fact, frequent eating will actually allow us to eat up to 50 per cent more calories without storing an ounce of it as fat. - says Dr Shikha Sharma, MBBS Doctor and Wellness Expert

Follow your hunger, don’t eat mechanically It is very important to understand the circadian rhythm of the body. As per our ancient science, Ayurveda, it is all about appropriate time for appropriate food in appropriate quantity. www.indoausietimes.com.au

Always remember, to never eat by the rule of the thumb. Go by the bio-feedback and follow your hunger needs. Hunger is the need of the body, and appetite for more meals, is the greed of the body. Eating mechanically should never be the case. Eat with awareness as you are not only consuming cosmic energy but cosmic intelligence too. - says Mickey Mehta, Holistic Health Guru

Our body was always accustomed to being fed at regular intervals There is this common perception that I have come up with this radical idea of multiple meals a day. But most of us, apart from the three main meals, have always eaten in between, just that we never thought of those as “meals”, a terminology of the new age nutrition. By default, the body was and is accustomed to being fed at regular intervals as evident in newborn babies who need to be fed constantly. At the basic physiological level, this ensures a steady level of blood sugar in our body and sends a signal that ‘all is well’ and it can continue with its regular processes. On the other hand, not eating for long hours sends the body into a state of panic and it reacts by converting food into fat for any eventuality (read — scarcity of food). The act of eating often during the day can only happen when communication is established with the stomach, the biggest diet guru on earth. This process is facilitated by the four principles of eating right. Eating as soon as we are awake kickstarts our metabolic rate and signals our bodies that our nightly fast is broken. Tea, coffee, or any other stimulant, does the exact opposite by suppressing the signals of hunger. Eating at regular intervals post this reassures our bodies that nourishment is readily available and that it no longer has to convert every meal into future fuel i.e. fat. Eating more when we are more active and less when less active will happen naturally once we are in tune with our appetite. Everybody is unique so we can’t standardise the number

of meals a day. For most of us there is the call of hunger every two-three hours. It is up to us whether we want to listen to it or ignore it. Of course, as all good things come to an end, eating the last meal of the day a few hours prior to bedtime allows our body to digest and assimilate all the nutrients it needs before focusing on its essential function of recovery during our sleep. If the last meal is too heavy or eaten too close to bedtime, the body will be unable to carry out its recovery and thus will leave us feeling uncomfortable the next day.

Life Style

It is also important to understand that the body needs time to utilise the fuels released from our food. Our body has its own natural rhythm which is as follows: - 12 pm to 8 pm is the ideal period for human digestive capability. So, most nutrients must be consumed at this time. - 8 pm to 4 am is assimilation time, where the body begins to slow down. - 4 am to 12 pm is elimination time/ detox time, if you are following a proper and disciplined lifestyle. The body’s digestive process slows down after sunset as the energy on that side of the earth is ebbing. So, all the food eaten post sunset becomes difficult to digest. The later you eat, you must make sure to choose your food sensibly. The thumb rule of eating small meals six to seven times a day, which occidental science suggests is rooted only in the shallow system of addressing the BMR / calorie counting.

- says Rujuta Diwekar Celebrity nutritionist and author

‘Breakfast kickstarts your metabolism’ is utter nonsense

London-based personal trainer Venice A Fulton negates the notion of six-to-eight meals a day and says that one should only eat three good meals a day and no in-between snacks. In his book Six weeks to OMG: Get Skinnier Than All Your Friends. Venice (real name Paul Khanna), claims he can help you lose upto around 10 kgs in six weeks. Venice states that the belief — “each time we eat we boost our metabolism and our chances of losing weight’ — is wrong and just wishful thinking”. He adds that our snacks have become meals and we eat more than we realise during the in-between-meal times. There is no point in eating six or more times a day because just sticking to three meals also controls our appetite as it releases leptin.

Stress is good 4 your immune system Stress is bad for you -- you’ve heard this a thousand times. But it can be good for your immune system, says a study.

S

hort-term stress, the fight-or-flight response, a mobilisation of bodily resources lasting minutes or hours in response to immediate threats, stimulates immune activity, said Firdaus Dhabhar, associate professor of psychiatry and behavioural sciences and member of the Stanford University Institute for Immunity, Transplantation, and Infection. And that’s a good thing. The immune system is crucial for wound healing and preventing or fighting infection, and both wounds and infections are common risks during chases, escapes and combat, the Journal of Psychoneuroendocrinology reported. Working with colleagues at Stanford and two other universities, Dhabhar showed that subjecting lab rats to mild stress caused a massive mobilization of several key types of immune cells into the bloodstream and then onto the skin and other tissues, according to a university statement. This large-scale migration of immune cells, which took place over two hours, was comparable to the mustering of

troops in a crisis, Dhabhar said. He and his colleagues had previously shown that a similar immune-cell redistribution in patients experiencing the short-term stress of surgery predicts enhanced postoperative recovery. Investigators were able to show that the massive redistribution of immune cells throughout the body was orchestrated by three hormones released by the adrenal glands, in different amounts and at different times, in response to the stress-inducing event. These hormones are the brain’s call-to-arms to the rest of the body, Dhabhar said. “Mother Nature gave us the fight-or-flight stress response to help us, not to kill us,” said Dhabhar, who has been conducting experiments for well over a decade on the effects of the major stress hormones on the immune system. The findings paint a clearer picture of exactly how the mind influences immune activity. “An impala’s immune system has no way of knowing that a lion is lurking in the grass and is about to pounce, but its brain does,” Dhabhar added.

5 secrets to maintain a steady weight The real task of managing your weight lies ahead. So, what will be your plan of action? The most pivotal point to note here is that you have to make your weight loss a permanent one. For doing so, today, Dr. Sukhvinder Singh Saggu, Sr Consultant Laparoscopic, Gastro & Obesity surgeon at Fortis Jessa Ram Hospital, New Delhi, gives us his insights on the top 5 secrets for maintaining a steady weight. Get exercise in unexpected ways. To maintain the ideal weight, for men and women, one needs to be active in their whole day. Ideally, it is recommended to burn at least 2000 calories per day for men & 1600 calories for women. There are several ways to burn your calories. For example, if men and women wash their cars, an activity that takes at least 30 minutes, it easily burns approximately 300 calories. Similarly, instead of using elevators/lift, if they use stairs, they will burn upto 100 calories, and so on. Don’t try to be perfect. Maintaining weight or losing weight should not be a short duration target. It should be an on-going activity, which

lose weight, rather it creates problems. It is recommended to have 6 to 7 meals in a day but of small portions. The count is of calories, i.e. how much you consume in a day. The small portion of meal helps you digest food faster. And not to forget, eat a light dinner at least a couple of hours before sleeping to avoid acidity and other indigestion issues that indirectly affect weight management. Do not forget your strength training routine. Not only does strength training give men and women a fit and toned body, but it also helps the joints and muscles work more efficiently against injuries. It makes joints and bones more flexible and strong, and increases stamina. It is ideally suggested that one should opt for strength training for at least three times a week. Strength train all parts of your body by targeting different body muscles on a daily basis.

Gym-goers and athletes tend to push themselves on empty stomachs in the belief they’ll burn up more fat. Most believe in the theory that exercising on an empty stomach will make the body use u p f a t

muscle and no energy to burn more fat. The studies found that when people trained with nothing in their stomachs, about 10 percent of the calories they burned came from protein, including muscle. In an earlier study, researchers had found that eating light before a meal was beneficial. Those who consumed 45 grams of carbohydrates before their workouts ended up eating less through the rest of the day. Experts now advise a light meal of oats or even a milkshake before a workout will go a long way in extending the benefits of the time spent in a gym. Those pushing the heavy ones in the hope of building muscle are well advised to go the Dara Singh way of egg ‘n’ milkshake.

needs to be achieved slowly and in a steady manner. It should be pursued with the intent to learn, rather than the attitude that declares it as learned or perfect. Keep fizzy drinks at bay as much as you can. Surely, soft drinks and other carbonated drinks need to be on check. If you are on your way to being a fit person and want to live your life healthier, then stay away from fizzy drinks as much as you can. Instead, go for home-made lemonade, fresh fruit juice or prepare your own ice tea. Carbonated, aerated drinks simply elevate the symptoms of diseases such as diabetes, arthritis, liver damage, heart ailments and even cancer to some extent. Eat at proper intervals. If one wants to maintain his/her lost weight or intends to lose weight, then the most important point to keep in mind is to have food at proper regular intervals. Skipping any meal of the day, will not help one to

reserves and covert it into energy instead of the glucose or carbohydrates that may be readily available from a meal or a drink before the workout. But while it seems to make sense, research now shows that exercising on an empty stomach doesn’t offer any benefit and may actually work against you. According to a recent report published this year in a fitness journal in the US, it has been established that the body burns the same amount of fat irrespective of whether you eat before or after a workout. But the problem arises in the fact that dizzy spells notwithstanding, you will lose muscle by exercising in a state of hunger. The study also found that and without food to help the workout, the intensity of the exercise and the total calorie burn will be reduced. So, that leaves you not only exhausted, but with less

Festival

Durga Ashtami Durga Puja is one of the most important festivals in India. It refers to all the six days observed as Mahalaya, Shasthi, Maha Saptami, Maha Ashtami, Maha Navami and Vijayadashami. More than just a festival Durga Puja is a celebration of life, culture, popular customs and traditions. It is a time of reunion and rejuvenation to love, to share and to care. Durga Puja is an important Hindu Festival celebrated all over India with different rituals and festivities especially in the eastern region covering the states of West Bengal, Assam, Bihar, Jharkhand, Orissa and Tripura. In West Bengal and Tripura, which has majority of Bengali Hindus it is the biggest festival of the year. Apart from eastern India, Durga Puja is also celebrated in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Punjab, Kashmir, Karnataka and Kerala. It is celebrated in the month of September/October every year. This festival involves the worship of Shakti i.e Goddess Durga. The legend Shakti lays back to the story of Mahisasur, a powerful daemon also known as the Buffalo Daemon. Through years

of intense praying and worship he got boon from Lord Brahma that no power could him making him invincible. But once the divine powers were bestowed upon him, he started ravaging the whole world and killing people and eventually wanted to uproot the Gods too. The Gods, in dismay, combined their powers to create a beautiful maiden, and each placed his or her most potent weapon in one of her ten hands riding a lion. Durga killed Mahisasur and won the heaven back for the Gods. Her return in each year in the Bengali month of Aswin (September-October) commemorates Rama’s invocation of the goddess Durga before he went into battle with Ravana.

Durga Puja is celebrated as one of the biggest festival in Bengal and is also most significant socio-cultural event in Bengali society.

Sharad Purnima The first full moon day of the month of Ashwin is known as Sharad Purnima. It is also referred to as Rasa Purnima, or Sharath Purnima. The festival is also referred as Kaumudi Festival, Kaumudi meaning moonlight. The dazzling night is associated with the divine love filled Raas Lila (Expression of love by graceful dance) of Lord Krishna with Radha and Gopis. This mythological past related to Sharad Purnima, makes it the best time to manifest love between couples. The day is also referred as Rasa Purnima or Raas Lila Day.

Sharad Poornima is also known as Kojagari Poornima. It is believed that on this night Goddess Lakshmi visits from place to place asking “Kojagari??” meaning “Who is awake” and bless those who are found awake. Rituals: Many rituals are practiced on this festival of bright moonlight. There is general practice of preparing kheer (Sweet dish made by boiling milk and mixing cooked rice along with sugar and dry fruits) and offered before God. Karva Chauth Origin and Significance The fast of Karva Chauth is kept by Hindu women for the wellbeing, prosperity and longevity of their husbands. The origin of this festival is based upon a very sweet and noble idea. In earlier times, girls would get married at a very young age, and had to go and live with their in-laws in other villages far away from their own parents. If she had any problems with her husband or in-laws, she would have no one to talk to or seek support from. Thus, there grew a custom where the bride would befriend another woman to share her joys and sorrows. Their friendship would

be sanctified through a small Hindu ceremony right during the marriage. Once the bride and the woman became god-friends or god-sisters as they are commonly known, they would remain so all their lives and recognize the relation as such. They would also treat each other like real sisters. After becoming friends, they would share all their joys, sorrows and problems with each other. Thus, Karva Chauth started as a festival to celebrate this friendship (relationship) between the brides and their god-friends (god-sisters). Praying and fasting for the sake of husband came later and was secondary. It was probably added, along with other mythical tales, to enhance the festival. In any case, the husband would always be associated with this festival, because the day of starting this holy friendship between two godsisters was essentially the day of bride’s marriage to him. Thus, praying and fasting for him by his wife during the celebration of her relationship with the god-friend would be quite logical.

is a land of blue-green lagoons, lush rainforests, pine forests, mountains and a 1000 miles of white, sandy beaches. There are 330 pieces of land big enough to be called islands scattered across 200,000 square miles of ocean, and several thousand others considered too small for human habitation. Of the 330 islands, Viti Levu and Vanua Levu make up 85% of the total land mass, and only just over 100 of the islands are actually inhabited. Click here for a Fiji Islands map. The larger islands are mainly of volcanic origin with high rugged terrain. The smaller islands are coral, limestone, or sand cays, with small pockets of tropical vegetation. Many islands have surrounding coral reefs and lagoons

As you can see, winter is a term, not a season. A cooling trade wind blows from the east south-east for most of the year. It usually drops to a whisper in the evening and picks up again by midmorning. Cyclones are mostly confined to the period November to April, with greatest frequency in January and February. On average, some ten to fifteen cyclones per decade affect some part of Fiji, and two to four do severe damage. The dominant north-west to south-east tracks gives some increased risk of damage in the outlying north-west island groups.

History: Fiji, which had been inhabited since the second millennium B.C. , was explored by the Dutch and the British in the 17th and 18th centuries. In 1874, an offer of cession by the Fijian chiefs was accepted, and Fiji was proclaimed a possession and dependency of the British Crown. In the 1880s largescale cultivation of sugarcane began. Over the next 40 years, more than 60,000 indentured laborers from India were brought to the island to work the plantations. By 1920, all indentured servitude had ended. Racial conflict between Indians and the indigenous Fijians has been central to the small island's history. Fiji became independent on Oct. 10, 1970. In Oct. 1987, Brig. Gen. Sitiveni Rabuka staged a coup to prevent an Indian-dominated coalition party from taking power. The military coup caused an exodus of thousands of Fijians of Indian origin who suffered ethnic discrimination at the hands of the government. A new constitution, which took effect in July 1998, provided for a multiracial cabinet and raised the prospect of a coalition government. The previous constitution had guaranteed dominance to ethnic Fijians. In 1999, Fiji's first ethnic Indian prime minister, Mahendra Chaudhry, took office.

Children Should not watch much the TV

Children

TV



Inventing TV is one of the most important steps of the human being on the way leading to a new world. A person can see every part of the planet where he or she has not ever come. A politician can talk to his or her voters in whole country. We might clearly see many advantages of TV. However, not all of us recognize TV's bad effects, especially on children. In my opinion, I can point out some disadvantages of TV for the children wasting time, passivity and harm to their health. To begin with, there are so many interesting TV programs that it might be difficult for children to turn off the TV after turning on it. When a show is going to end, and then the speaker will produce another attractive one. The programs are shown constantly. Furthermore, with the development of TV industry, specialized channels appear. Children might use all day to watch Disney channel and do nothing. In addition, TV makes children passive. Every image and sound is delivered continually. The children just receive the information passively. It will prevent the minds from deeply thinking or creating new ideas. On the other hand, going to parks or doing outdoor activities can raise children 's creative ability. Until 3-4 years children are attracted only by motions on the screen. Differing real and imaginary is difficult for them until 7 years; since 4 till 7 years identification prevails: children compare themselves with their favorite heroes and want to resemble them. After 7 years they already can compare TV images and plots to reality. They already have ideas of time and space, and they are learning analyzing, reasoning and maintaining their point of views. These abilities are formed by 10-11 years, when substance of things they see becomes the most important. Approximately since this age children can choose programs by themselves and also make breaks between programs. In early teen age (12-13 years) they are already a little bit tired of TV, and they switch to video games. Substance of images becomes very important, a new stage of identification takes place. Comparing themselves with video and TV heroes, children prefer characters that support their ego: boys – strong and masculine, girls – beautiful and seducing. During this period parents should again pay special attention to TV-program choice and discussion. Furthermore,it is very harmful for children if they spend most of the time on TV. There are many diseases caused by watching TV too much. One of them is sort-sighted which is becoming more and more popular in the young. Moreover, watching TV too much might also bring the children be tired or even exhausted. In conclusion, TV is not entirely bad for children. Therefore, understanding the negative effects of it, parents should help their children watch TV sensibly.

The dove and the wrinkled little bat once went on a journey together. When it came toward night a storm arose, and the two companions sought everywhere for a shelter. But all the birds were sound asleep in their nests and the animals in their holes and dens. They could find no welcome anywhere until they came to the hollow tree where old Master Owl lived, wide awake in the dark. "Let us knock here," said the shrewd bat; "I know the old fellow is not asleep. This is his prowling hour, and but that it is a stormy night he would be abroad hunting. What ho, Master Owl!" he squeaked, "will you let in two stormtossed travelers for a night's lodging?" Gruffly the selfish old owl bade them enter, and grudgingly invited them to share his supper. The p o o r dove was so tired that she could scarcely eat, but the greedy bat's spirits rose as soon as he saw the viands spread before him. He was a sly fellow, and immediately began to flatter his host into good humor. He praised the owl's wisdom and his courage, his gallantry and his generosity though every one knew that however wise old Master Owl might be, he was neither brave nor gallant. As for his generosity, both the dove and the bat well remembered his selfishness toward the poor wren, when the owl alone of all the birds refused to give the little fire-bringer a feather to help cover his scorched and shivering body. All this flattery pleased the owl. He puffed and ruffled himself, trying to look as wise, gallant, and brave as possible. He pressed the bat to help himself more generously to the viands, which invitation the sly fellow was not slow to accept. During this time the dove had not uttered a word. She sat quite still staring at the bat, and wondering to hear such insincere speeches of flattery. Suddenly the owl turned to her. "As for you, Miss Pink-Eyes," he said gruffly, "you keep careful silence. You are a dull table companion. Pray, have you nothing to say for yourself?" "Yes," exclaimed the mischievous bat; "have you no words of praise for our kind host? Methinks he deserves some return for this wonderfully generous, agreeable, tasteful, well-appointed, luxurious, elegant, and altogether acceptable banquet. What have you to say, O little dove?" But the dove hung her head, ashamed of her companion, and said very simply, "O Master Owl, I can only thank you with all my heart for the hospitality and shelter which you have given me this night. I was beaten by the storm,

and you took me in. I was hungry, and you gave me your best to eat. I cannot flatter nor make pretty speeches like the bat. I never learned such manners. But I thank you." "What!" cried the bat, pretending to be shocked, "is that all you have to say to our obliging host? Is he not the wisest, bravest, most gallant and generous of gentlemen? Have you no praise for his noble character as well as for his goodness to us? I am ashamed of you! You do not deserve such hospitality. You do not deserve this shelter." The dove remained silent. Like Cordelia in the play she could not speak untruths even for her own happiness. "Truly, you are an unamiable guest," snarled the owl, his yellow eyes growing keen and fierce with anger and mortified pride. "You are an ungrateful bird, Miss, and the bat is right. You do not deserve this generous hospitality which I have offered, this goodly shelter which you asked. Away with you! Leave my dwelling! Pack off into the storm and see whether or not your silence will soothe the rain and the wind. Be off, I say!" "Yes, away with her!" echoed the bat, flapping his leathery wings. And the two heartless creatures fell upon the poor little dove and drove her out into the dark and stormy night. Poor little dove! All night she was tossed and beaten about shelterless in the storm, because she had been too truthful to flatter the vain old owl. But when the bright morning dawned, draggled and weary as she was, she flew to the court of King Eagle and told him all her trouble. Great was the indignation of that noble bird. "For his flattery and his cruelty let the bat never presume to fly abroad until the sun goes down," he cried. "As for the owl, I have already doomed him to this punishment for his treatment of the wren. But henceforth let no bird have anything to do with either of them, the bat or the owl. Let them be outcasts and night-prowlers, enemies to be attacked and punished if they appear among us, to be avoided by all in their loneliness. Flattery and inhospitality, deceit and cruelty - what are more hideous than these? Let them cover themselves in darkness and shun the happy light of day.

“As for you, little dove, let this be a lesson to you to shun the company of flatterers, who are sure to get you into trouble. But you shall always be loved for your simplicity and truth. And as a token of our affection your name shall be used by poets as long as the world shall last to rhyme with LOVE.

Speaking specifically about manic depression, she asked, “How would you diagnose a patient who walks back and forth screaming at the top of his lungs one minute, then sits in a chair weeping uncontrollably the next?”

The man shrugs his shoulders and replies, “We needed the eggs.”

Horoscope

Leo

July 24 – August 23

When planning a trip, be sure to make important reservations well ahead of time, confirming them with a deposit if necessary. Steer clear of office malingerers and backbiters, as you may be lumped with them when it comes time to separate the sheep from the goats. Exercise your will power when it comes to making major purchases of luxury items. If there is no need, there will be little pleasure.

23 November - 21 December

Get back to nature. Find your pleasures in simpler things and don’t be too tied to modern conveniences and frivolities. Expect a certain amount of trouble resulting from an overindulgent appetite. You could avoid some of the problems, however, if you rely on the advice of an old friend. Career matters could improve and you may be in line for a promotion or increase in income if you move fast

21 January - 19 February

A trip to another city or climate could open things up for you and prove to be much more interesting than you had imagined. Stop mistreating your body, particularly with excesses of food and drink, and your general health will improve dramatically. If you are in the mood for romance, don’t stand on ceremony and let the object of your affections know how you feel. Career problems may improve suddenly

21 April - 21 May

Your vacation plans could be spoiled by carelessness involving planning procedures. Pay special attention to such matters as vehicle safety and reliability. Seek to avoid arguments concerning financial matters, particularly with persons who have no direct interest. Romance could take a side-trip along interesting avenues, but caution should be used when a situation involves someone previously committed

Scorpio

Aquarius Taurus

24 August - 23 September

Precaution is advised when dealing with one whose vision is limited by jealousy. Anything you say can — and probably will — be used against you if things come to a showdown. Romantic plans could go awry if you are unable to overcome a tendency to flirt indiscriminately. Make the most of your talents and let other know of your abilities. Avoid over-indulgence in eating or drinking

23 November - 21 December

Set your mind to the task and you will find it not nearly as difficult as you thought at first. In dealing with an old flame who no longer ignites you, try to be both gentle and truthful. Operating within your own framework will prove to be much more profitable to you than striking out for unknown fields. Begin a savings plan now, however modest.

Pisces 22 May - 22 June

Gemini

A new business partnership could enhance your earnings if you choose one who is industrious and talented. Do not become involved with those who merely talk a good game, however. In romantic activity, keep things light and don’t commit yourself too early in the game. Parental concerns could be paramount to you, but may become less of a problem if you are frank

An old love affair, kept on the back burner for a lengthy period, could either flame up suddenly or die quietly, depending on your reaction to a touchy situation. Individual cases may vary, but the latter course could prove the wisest in the long run for many. Avoid unnecessary arguments with colleagues over credit for minor accomplishments.

24 September - 23 October

This could be your lucky month, if you take advantage of the opportunities that may come your way. Make sure that you clear up any old debts that might be hanging and don’t neglect an important letter that needs writing. A new love partner could enter your life now, but you may not be able to notice him or her because of being too tied up with inconsequential matters.

22 December - 20 January

Your latent creative talents have lain hidden long enough. Now is the time to trot them out and run them up the flagpole. If no one salutes, you won’t have lost anything, but if they do, you could be in for some surprising changes in your lifestyle. An excellent chance for matrimony awaits many unmarried Capricorns and — perhaps — for some who are.

21 March - 20 April

A developing interest in a fellow worker could cause you some headaches on several levels unless you are able to cool it. Office romances seldom follow a smooth path and if it is serious, one or the other should consider a change of employment, if possible. In health matters, follow the advice of your physician, regardless of the seeming inconvenience.

Horoscope

20 February - 20 March

An ability to say the right thing at the right time is to be treasured — but sometimes, it is better to say nothing at all. An urgent appeal for financial help should be handled carefully, but a minor amount of money might prove less expensive than injured feelings. Excitement in romance could be intoxicating, but make sure you view the entire picture before saying yes.
