Location was: 451 S Federal between Alaska + Virginia and was displayed the month of August

The Southwest Vida Youth Leadership Team in partnership with the Youth Teen Empowerment team, came together to create a billboard to end youth gun violence in communities. The Denver Police Department, Chief Pazen, Office of Independent Monitor and Councilwoman Jamie Torres supported us throughout this process. The main goal of this billboard is to bring awareness to families, parents, and youth about youth gun violence at home and on the streets.

The teddy bear represents children and youth, while the white coffin is a representation of innocence. Sadly, too many youths today are in possession of guns. The outcome is that innocent youth die and are buried in white coffins.

The Southwest Vida Youth Leadership Team have applied for funding to display similar billboards in additional areas across the city.

El Grupo de Liderazgo Southwest Vida en asociación con Youth Teen Empowerment se unió para crear un letrero publicitaria para poner fin a la violencia armada entre los jóvenes en la comunidades. Armando Saldate III was nominated as the Executive Director of Public Safety by Mayor Hancock in January 2022 and confirmed by Denver City Council in February 2022. Director Saldate oversees the Denver Police Department, Denver Fire Department, Denver Sheriff Department, Denver 9-1-1, Community Corrections, Public Safety Youth Programs, and the Office of Community Violence Solutions.

3. How does the FBI Violent Gang Taskforce work? How does it compare to Denver’s gang problems?

Director Saldate states he was exposed to gangs growing up. When he started his career with the FBI he chose to focus on the highest ganginvolved areas of the city. The socioeconomic class was different, but people had an honest living and were living peacefully. Unfortunately, gangs disrupted that peace in those communities. Street gangs would become territorial. The difference back then is that gangs were less recognizable, they were all mixed and were not ethnically based. Currently, communication is another aspect like cellphones, because a gang dispute can evolve quickly over social media.

2. What has been the most effective approach to public safety gun, and youth violence?

"Back in the day, the war on drugs and on gangs, led to disparities for our communities of color, more black and brown people went to jail. We learned a lot through that. The justice systems approach to gangs was to “arrest them all” and the crime will stop. All it did was make people more hardened, they were cycling through the jail system, and it developed more organized crime and more negative outcomes. If you divert gangs, it is more effective than enforcement. It's expensive to house criminals. If a 14-year-old, was given the opportunity to not be in gangs it would have helped: sports team, extracurricular activity, arts, something else more positive. It is a way better outcome to divert them from crime".

"Southwest Vida is on the right track. You have a voice, and you are doing projects in the community like the billboard and newsletter that promotes safety. SAFETY does not equal police, safety is about community. Safety is access to opportunity, socioeconomic, parks, libraries, grocery stores, transit, ability to go out and recreate and drive or walk or take the bus. Safety is much more than policing, it's about the interactions with the community. Knowing your neighbors makes it safer because you can all watch out for each other. If you see something wrong, always report it".

What is PrEP

The Process

1) To brainstorm concepts and feelings we want our logo to convey The graphic designers provided us a mood board to inspire the team

2) The graphic designers provided us with about 11 concepts to choose from. Each concept had a variety of fonts, shapes, and feelings that it conveyed Ultimately, our team voted on three potential concepts to be our final logo

3) They then added color to the black and white concepts. Each color conveyed different feelings so picking the right ones are important.

4) We invite the community to share in spreading our new logo by displaying the peace sign in taking your pictures and when you are out in the community

Every successful organization has a logo that represents their identity and helps people connect with the brand. As Southwest Vida grows, so does the need for a logo. Think of the golden arches of McDonald’s or the iconic Nike swoosh. During these past couple weeks, our team hired a graphic designer to collaborate and design a logo. Our goal is to have a logo that is memorable and makes a strong first impression.

The Core Responders respond 24/7 and are available in all districts. Outreach Case Coordinators do the follow-up work with the individuals after coming in contact with STAR PROGRAM responders."

Thomas: "Give us a chance! We know there has been controversy about school resource officers, however the reason they're there is to develop trust with youth If they can get their first positive interaction with police it would be a good experience for the youth so that when they are out in the public and have an encounter with police there is no fear "

Pazen: "One of the great things that the Sherriff's department is doing now, if people are having mental health challenges, substance abuse, or experiencing homelessness they have a navigator available to provide support when someone is released from jail "

Thomas: “Leading with compassion” is a quote the Sherriff's department goes by, which is built into the Denver Police Department's mission statement "just be respectful of people and with dignity "

7. We know that there are a lack of police officers in the state and across the country. How would you motivate young people to join the workforce?

TIPS TO BEAT Procrastination Procrastination

The first few months of school are here! There's no better way to be prepared than to get into the habit of NOT procrastinating -finishing homework and projects on time, or maybe even earlier!

SubtleTipstoAvoidProcrastinating:

Plan out your whole schedule the day before Planning out your day the night before will ensure that you have a guided map of where the future day is going -- what tasks are needed to be completed or a location to go to at a certain time.

The two-second-rule

Find something that can be done in two seconds that is related to the task and work yourself from there (ie opening a book when you have a hard time to start reading it) This rule should be practiced as a habit, and once executed right, you will have the power to start a task without the reliance of motivation!

Hi, my name is Tyler Some of the things that I like to do is going to the gym, meditate, and writing in general I joined SW Vida around February I decided to join SW Vida in order to have a shot to make a contributition to the community If I had a chance to at least even change one life in the community, it would be all worth it to me. Joining the SW Vida team also gives me a chance to improve my writing skills, so I'm grateful to be here.
