YOUNGSAN UNIVERSITY

Goethe’s Faust dealing with human agony and the way of salvation, is frequently read in Asia, especially in Korea. What kind of person is Faust in Korea today? What kind of person is Mephisto in Korea today? What kind of person is Grechen in Korea today? What is the ultimate appearance of an anguish or wandering human being in Korea today? What is the salvation of Koreans today? In the context of today’s Korean society where Western and Korean gods’ points of view are mixed, these questions lead us to a performance called Faust Korea.

I am worth what I have. I want what you have. I fear the rich and pity the poor. I am ashamed to love money. The money taboo has a lot of suppressed energy. The Fun Club Presents... Three performers sitting in a theatre waiting to begin. Something is different, somehow... an audience. The Fun Club are attempting to stage a show that is original: part autobiography, part improv, all new writing. Can they make the connection that others have made before? Some audience feedback to tempt you: ‘A mischievous and moving deconstruction of theatre as we know it... marvellous wit... genius cast.’ ‘Fantastic work.’ ‘Hilarious’. ‘...some lovely young creatures do acting in a most enjoyable fashion’. ‘It was Seinfeld meets Alan Bennett set in a Child in Need assessment...’.

T H E H ALF M O O N SH ANIA BURNT LEMON THEATRE The Half Moon Pub, the punk pit stop of 1999. Ketamine Kerry leads her girls on the pub tour of their twenties. 15 pubs down, 150 pints downed (each!). It’s been a blast so far, but it’s getting too much – the wandering eyes that trickle down girls’ thighs, the hands that brush by, too close for comfort... It’s gonna be a riot! So wear your best knickers – don’t lose them – but lose yourself, because the best thing about being a woman is the prerogative to have a little fun!

‘There’s something about the UK, you don’t welcome people.’ One woman goes on a mission to make a change. She hosts tea parties around the country, inviting her guests to enjoy a cuppa and share their thoughts on the act of welcoming. How do we make a world where ‘welcome’ is more than a greeting? Loaded with optimism and chocolate digestives, this interactive new show brings people together amidst ongoing global displacement and galvanises us to spread positivity and start a revolution. This is a call to arms with mugs in hand. This is The Welcome Revolution.

T HE RE S H E I S GABRIELA FLARYS

A humorous one-woman show, a journey to get there: to a better place, a better word, anything better. However, a whale has jumped in front of a train in central London and all paths must change. The mammal is displaced. Something foreign feels stuck. In an attempt at arrival, the encounters along her way unfold the many “others” that exist within oneself. This piece is based on a series of interviews with people of different nationalities who live in London and speak English as a second language.

Violet is starting to forget. But she’s got a long life to remember before she does. There are rights to wrong and ends to tie up; a life well lived is never neat. Generations younger, Bertie is at the beginning with no idea what lies ahead. She’s looking for something to point her in the right direction. A summer by the sea and an unexpected friendship. A funny, heartwarming tale about memory, friendship and what we leave behind. From the team behind awardwinning show Thick Skin and the winner of the Buzz Goodbody Director Award.

Fresh from selling out the National Theatre in Oslo. Award-winning poet Fredrik Høyer from Det Andre Teatret tells his critically acclaimed story about life, marathon, ultra-runners and the romcom The Holiday. All whilst running for his life on a treadmill! Beautiful, existential and exhaustingly funny. Det Andre Teatret is Norway’s first and largest independent improv/fringe theatre. Their focus on strong improvisation skills and fine storytelling combined to an inherent theatricality and a playful risk-loving attitude have earned them an outstanding international reputation over the years.

Zugunruhe (zoo-gun-rue): an ornithology term for ‘migratory restlessness in birds’. This show explores the incredible flight of a marsh warbler, the world’s only bird whose song echoes its migration route. Body-compasses, magnetic fields, African sunsets, star-chasing, stormriding, homing... Zugunruhe offers a wild, fresh look at migration. Rehearsing among birds in the wetlands of Somerset, performer Tom Bailey creates a feast of bird behaviour alongside a digital sound map of the marsh warbler’s journey, made by composer Rowan Evans. Developed in residence at UCL Migration Research Unit. Supported by The Leverhulme Trust, Arts Council England and Red Brick Building.

A dynamic multimedia production from the National Theatre of China, recreating the epic journey from east to west along the historic Silk Road. In a ground-breaking collaboration with French theatre makers, digital projection and an electronic soundtrack complement the evocative physical performance of a world-class cast of 16. Following the success of their 2017 Edinburgh Fringe production Luocha Land, this new production by celebrated choreographer Zhao Miao once again combines Chinese mythology with powerful visuals and contemporary physical theatre. ‘Passion and precision in physical theatre’ (Scotsman). ‘Colourfully macabre and slickly executed’ (BroadwayBaby.com).

BLUFF

‘Our world is in order, a world in which there are unchangable truths that are valid to everybody.’ Or maybe not? Maybe one starts to shiver at the thought that it could also be quite different. Can you feel the terryfing feeling of living in the wrong film? Maybe it is true... and one little question, an experience, or a simple bang can unmask the whole fraud, and make clear that the world is a gigantic theatrical play, a consoling illusion: do we all – already for a very long time – live in a grandiose forgery?

Dep is the Vietnamese word for beautiful. With his latest dance work, the UK-based choreographer Dam Van Huynh explores influences from his South East Asian heritage. In Vietnamese culture, death is also a form of rebirth. The dancers in Dep are nude for a purpose. Fragile and vulnerable, their nudity literally strips them bare. The movement invites the audience to let go, reaching ever closer to the feeling of being alive.

A mad inventor applies logic to the absurd and abstract. Distant memories, ideas and images smash together. Surreal scenes and characters push, prod and taunt. We ask: what is irony? Where is sincerity? Who can I believe? Our inventor finds himself in a world where rules have changed and irreverence abounds. Pie Equals Square is a structural feat that constantly evolves and folds in on itself, challenging the timeline of our shared existence. Choreographer Paula Mann’s idiosyncratic, whimsical postmodernist movement combined with composer Hans Kruger’s soulful sound score provides the perfect counterpoint to our rollercoaster world.
