SINKING SHIP PRODUCTIONS A man sits alone in a cage, starving himself for your entertainment. A ‘beautifully imagined’ (CultureBot.org), darkly comic adaptation of the Kafka story by acclaimed Brooklyn-based company Sinking Ship. ‘Talented!’ (New York Times). ‘Splendid!’ (Time Out). Once cheered by thousands, the Hunger Artist is now forgotten by everyone except his one-time manager. What begins as a simple nostalgic story transforms into a startlingly inventive trip into the nature of memory, art, performance and spectatorship, as told by the only person who remembers an artist whose act was simply... to hunger.

CELE BRATIO N EMERGENCY CHORUS

The past year’s been a bit rough, hasn’t it? At times, it’s felt like the world has been slowly unravelling, a ball of string hurtling down a hill in painful slow motion, all of us clutching the frayed end of the roll as if that were helping. The future is murky and uncertain. But we say: sod that. Let’s make joy! Let’s feel our way into the future with blind and trusting hands. Part theatre, part dance party, part funeral, Celebration aims to give anyone who can’t quite believe the world they live in something to believe in.

In a Black Mirror-esque near future, two men face each other across a table. A bomb has been dropped on purpose on the motherland’s civilian population. Why? Everyone has reasons, even the cruellest of plans can be defended. In an era of fake news and dystopic visions becoming everyday occurrences, the two men sitting at the table seem to be very distant in their arguments and ideologies, but their shifting convergence will bring a deflagration, like bringing matter in contact with dark matter. Echoes is a taut twohander that will generate long discussions and food for thought.

SHOKO SEKI: DEADLINE SHOKO SEKI This part-choreographed, part-improvised piece explores the Japanese phenomenon of death through overwork: Karuoshi. What brings large swathes of Japanese society to dance on the edge of existence and mortality? Shoko Seki tests the ethical penumbra of long-respected societal truths: self-sufficiency, loyalty and trust. In the world’s most connected society, how can an individual fall off the grid?

THE MOSTLY EVERYTHING PEOPLE Ever wondered how you got this way? Why you shout at the TV? Why simple hunger turns you into a toddler? Did the starry-eyed 20-year-old that you were turn into a kind, hardened adult? Why? A lecture about conflict and a theory of ego development goes bad. VI R AG O SUE LEWIS / JOHN F WAKE Virago: a story about social injustice with as much relevance today as in Victorian Wales. Descended from Irish immigrants fleeing the potato famine, Minnie McGuire, the most arrested woman in Victorian Wales, was a victim of poverty in a period of extreme hardship. Convicted as a teenage prostitute, dependent on alcohol, she notched up over 100 court appearances for lewd behaviour, amongst other things.

LE FESTIN DE SATURNE

T H E AT R E

The war breaks out. Juan, a young private, and the virile Captain Fidel Castra are stranded alone in the most complete solitude, far from the front line. The enemy is approaching... They are awaiting the orders... The show alternates intense violent moments with lighter poetical instants in the style of comic trash. It is a politically incorrect and caustic show that involves the art of pantomime and plays on different genres; burlesque and art performance. Not to be missed!

E-DO E-Do is an ensemble of six incredibly talented musicians who combine traditional and contemporary rhythms with consummate ease. The group is led by Kyung-Hwa Yu, one of the most acclaimed artists in Korea. Kyung-Hwa Yu, who took her first traditional dance class at the age of four, is credited with reviving the chulhyungeum, an ancient instrument from Korea that was almost on the verge of extinction. E-Do’s profound understanding of traditional Korean music is complemented with a singularly contemporary re-oriental. The resulting music is precise and technically exact yet spontaneous and fresh.
