CW: sexual coercion, anxiety, shame
Let’s think about shame a little. While it is one of the most pervasive emotions we feel—it’s linked to embarrassment, guilt and even anger—shame is also the emotion that was the least publicly discussed. So we decided to use the third issue of our art and poetry anthology zine Kalavaram as an opportunity to think through it. Our themes have always encouraged vulnerability but none more than this one. The reason shame gets overlooked, we understood, is not because people are unaware of it, but because confronting it is a painful and terrifying experience. Kalavaram was built on initiating collaborations and conversations between creatives. This time, we turned to the classics. Kusama, Bruyckere, and Manet, among others grace this issue. Some correspond to a poem while others relate to the theme or a poem. All are here because we fell in love with them.
We hope this issue moves you as much as it did us!
