Kalavaram (கலவரம்) means riot in Tamil. A riot is a protest; it is a collective act of defiance. A riot contains the power to define time—there is a Before and an After. Art, or Kala in Hindi, can defy time—art lives beyond the artist who made it, it is timeless. We wanted our zine Kalavaram to be both things—an artistic riot, against a gate-kept institution of Art, against expectations, against rigid norms.
And what’s a better riot than pride? We chose the broad notion of queerness as personhood and politics as the theme of our first issue. And we are proud to present to you 9 original poems and 11 original works of art, all compiled in what we hope is the first of many pocket-sized riots for you to read, write in, and share.
