Depending on how you look at it, this is either the best or the worst time to read Kalavaram’s fourth issue on the theme Dissent.
Dissent is both a noun and a verb. It is simultaneously what you do and who you are. Power has already determined what subjects are worthy of dissent and who is allowed to do it in this country. We believe that how you dissent is just as vital to explore. From the spaces one can occupy in their dissent to the modes through which they channel it―everything is concealed in/revealed by one’s identity and determined by privilege. The arts have been a critical form of dissenting and we couldn’t think of a better way than a poetry and art anthology to explore it! As we release this issue of poetry and art, voices of dissent continue to be curbed by a culture of fear and incarceration. How do you shake this persistent persecution? How do you continue to dissent?
