WEEK6

/TASKS/ gathering teams, ice breaking /DIFFICLULTIES/ cannot get in touch with the 8th member /SOLUTION/ by contacting his peers

/MY POSITION/ learner, leader

Our groups found each other in BB Collaborative Lecture and Teams. We gathered 7 members in the first week. I created our chat group on instagram as our main way to communicate. After introducing ourselves to each other, we talked about time zones we were in. 4 members are in UK(+0), 3 of us are in China(+8) and one of us is in Bermuda(-4).

FIRST GROUP MEETING IN TEAMS

opinions on health wealth

We share our work of the first week, due to some equipment problems, not everyone get well connection to Microsoft Teams.I was impressed by Jinrui's amazing presentataion , which is very logical and persuasive.Eco-architecture was also mentioned.

I shared an idea about pop-up event and a substainable design case study. After group meeting, i found we were yet to develope a common idea. So i suggested our group to create more concepts this week which later found was a wrong decision , because we did not do enough research on HEALTH AND WEALTH.

/TASKS/

health wealth research challenge

/DIFFICLULTIES/

hard to communicate research on Instagram

/SOLUTION/

set up a google document

/MY POSITION/ recorder, learner, researcher

-introducing and getting know with each other better instead of assigning work to members directly

-calm down from figurign out concepts and research further on health and wealth

-having more collaboration on research

From these, i found myself was not good enough to be in the position of leader, so Chiara lead us at this stage. She created a google document to record our research results which was really great and Tony joined in this week, and allocated the task. What I learned from them is how to start a project and gather the team efficiently.

LINKED RESEARCH WITH GROUP:

Then we did linked research based on the health wealth research challenge. Not until our tutor remind me did I realize I should have linked research with all eight members instead of forming a small group.Although we researched on different areas, I would do more on each topic.

WEEK9

/TASKS/ share previous work and interests in this collabration project

/DIFFICLULTIES/ find everyone's positions in the group

/SOLUTION/ taking notes from presentation about what they want to achieve in this project

/MY POSITION/ learner, listener

The theme of presentation this week is about our specialized practice nature, strength and expectation in this project.

Darcie would like to be the leader. She is good at illustration and had done some models before.Rayna had good research ability. Jinrui shown a lot of knitting samples she did in her course and was not good at digital work.Tim exceled in 3D rendering and video editing. My expected position in the group is a contributive member who could follow weekly tasks well and give plan to next week. I am also good at doing collaging and digital work.

Simone and Chiara had some equipment problems, however Simone showed his drawing skills in group meeting and Chiara showed good ability in leadership.

3 AREAS WE WANT TO DEVELOPE: Eco-Architecture/ Circular Material(Nests)/ Fast-Fashion

CONCEPT COLLAGE:

I shared collages based on my previous research. I wonder how it looks if i put animal’s nests into human working place to help people get rests or relieve themselves from the reality for a while. Flying squirrel are flying in financial district, spider nets in office and dolphin swimming through the entrance of a office.

After group meeting , we proposed three areas to develop further.Eco-architecture, nests and fast fashion.

12 13

/TASKS/ gather members' ideas and choose our final idea

/DIFFICLULTIES/ choose from serveral ideas

/SOLUTION/ combinate them

/MY POSITION/ learner,critic

PERSONAL RESEARCH ON: Nests

Nests is inspired by the recycle material research in group.Rice straw by Jinrui, bamboo by Rayna and leaves by Simone. I found a Korean artists use nylon to create his hometown and houses in meaningful places. And a couple artists in USA did a sculpture by canvas. All of our group researched on the ‘The Great Swallow’ by Benjamin Verdonck. He builds a nests out of a building and live in it. The whole picture shows his attitude on escaping from the reality. Benjamin Verdonck’s work reminiscent me of Shinning. Jack become mad in a stressed environment. He wrote whole page of ‘work and no play makes Jack a dull’.

PERSONAL RESEARCH ON: eco-architecture

I am classifying eco-architecture to three types: eco-roof, eco-wall and eco-interior and gave examples on each items. For eco-roof, the curved grass roof of image 1 could help regulate temperature by absorbing water. And image2 not only recycle efficiently , but also provide a small eco-park to relax.

I find two office design which all have a eco-wall.Image4 is in Czech and the diagram shows how it recycle water from pond to the eco-wall.Image 6wall with growing plants is traditional ,however, the steel net structure add a sense of fashion.

Eco-interior is having eco-area inside the semi-open buildings and making users feel walking in a real forests.

We decided to combine eco-architecture and nests together for our final idea. After critiquing each other, we have no idea on how to present eco-nests at this stage. Our tutor Jayoon suggested us to design our own nests firstly , then decide the way to present.

MY OWN ECO-NEST DESIGN WEEK11 /TASKS/

design our own nests

/DIFFICLULTIES/

integrate all nests into one style

/SOLUTION/

make a bigger scene let nests hide inside

/MY POSITION/ leader, recorder

I started to design my own nests by brain-storming which places i feel comfortable. Museums, libraries, swimming pools, gyms and apartments. Then, i develop the swimming pool to a sauna house and draw details of the interior step by step.

21

Then i think about the location that we put in our nests. And i did a series of collages to show the scene of apartment and office in a dramatic colour way.

OUTCOME DISCUSSION eco-nests

We discussed about what we will do for final outcome on Teams. Tony shared a picture book called WHERE’S WALLY?It is a game to find Wally in thousands of characters. We all think it is an interesting idea and could have team work on designing scene and characters. We all agreed on making a picture book about eco-nests for two kinds of audience: office workers and students at the end of the meeting.

WEEK15

/TASKS/ reflec on group work

/DIFFICLULTIES/ make it logically

/SOLUTION/ layout week by week

/MY POSITION/ group member

I feel anxious in the first three weeks because our teams have such a big difference in designing styles, ideas even on time zone. But this feeling relieved in next few weeks thanks to better communication.

We spend 6 weeks on critiquing our ideas each other over and over to find a common interested area. Although we were slower than other groups, i think it is paid off. Despite some argument occurred at this stage, we still respect each other's idea and move the project forward as a united team. Moreover, it is not easy to communicate under the pandemic situation.Rayna infected with covid unluckily, Chiara’s wifi was suffered from a hurricane in Bermuda and Simone hadn't got a microphone on his laptop. These issues still didn't stop us having group discussions everyday.I think we did really well.

What’ more,I was lost in finding my position at the beginning because i led the group go into wrong research direction in the first week. In the outcome producing stage, some members have equipment problems, so our progress is delayed.I am good at digital, so i become leader at last three weeks and carry the project forward successfully.Looking back , i learned never be afraid to take the leader's role or to make wrong decisions. As a saying goes, unity is strength. We should build mutual trust only in this way can we overcome the obstacles together.

In conclusion, i raised two goals for me in this group project which is to enjoy and learn something from the collaboration. The second is to accomplish our group outcomes with my 3D skills. Although we have troubles in communications and efficiency, I was satisfied with working with them.

PERSONAL WORK CASE STUDY: Runway Research

IDEA RESEARCH : Stress

These photo shows the stress of women in daily life with a fantasy way.

My personal work is inspired by group work. Stress and mental health have been studied before and i want to centralize these problems on a specific population ––female.

There are more and more designers call attention to the social, political and economic problems facing women and girls.

I felt something after watching Dior 2020 runway whos theme is feminist.I appreciate how the designers expose social problems to the public through a dramatic fashion show, however my understanding of screaming out for women is not shouting directly or printing slogans on T-shirts. So, i decided to design a showroom to uncover female pressure.

38 39

CASE STUDY :

SKETCHES :

“public and scientific resources”

After tutorial, how to attract people and sell this idea is an important consideration at this stage.Collaborating with some fashion brands is one of the solution. There are thousand tones of fast fashion clothes cornering in warehouse based on our group research. However, i came up with another solution after researching on Serpentine Gallery. These project shares a common feature. These unique pop-up design promote the relationship between human, nature and art with rare experimental material. So, i designed a showroom by making use of a main media––sand.

40 41
serpentine gallery's annual pavilion project
“gathering spaces and community places around the city”
“free space”“built environment against the backdrop of a natural landscape”
(Serpentine Pavilion | Tag | ArchDaily, n.d.) mobile showroom

PLAN AND CIRCULATION DIAGRAM :

The structure is related to sand hill because i want models walking through the sand hills which gives an implication of forging ahead. The showroom could be placed on a mobile truck. Both interior space and roof could be a runway depends on how much sands inside.

43
“showing women‘s stress and situations in space language"
Both interior and roof space could be a runway depends on the sand

SECTION AND DETAILS :

I found several female stress such as body shame, role transformation…With these keywords , i designed few devices in 3 fixed points for models to walk through , in order to represent ‘old rules’ ‘body shame’ and ‘role conflict’.

“Role Conflicts”

“body shame”

“break the wall of old systempaternal line society”

44 45

OUTCOME DISPLAY :

digital model and rendering

This is my first time to do a extended project, so it is interesting to see how we get different outcomes from the same group work and learn from each other. What’s more, I have not concerned about how to sell my design before, this would be included in my future design.Last but not least, i should always take environmental protection into account as a designer.
