Project statement:

This project is about critiquing routine of selfie which always follows the same pattern, all in the same key.Selfie become a popular activity when people meet something meaningful. There are more and more tutorial about how to photo a selfie. Some tutorials are helpful in technical area, however more tutorials are teaching how to pretend to be an icon .There is actually some ‘classic’ pose these years to show longer legs, smaller faces and more famous brand clothes. So, the selfie on social media become more and more similar. These photos do not show their own personality and taste, they are just copies. The hood part in the project is a forcing smile machine that everyone will get the same angle of smiling. We also install some devices to force the user to a same position.Such as a chin-holder to fasten the jaw and some shaped wood blocks to make shoulders to vogue. This project was a complete 3 months work, so i tried some new way to design.I tried a way to transfer a 2D image to 3D mode.At first i found it was difficult to design the density. After trying different combinations, i decided to make all plane geometry firstly and then decide the height. I thought the models are like architecture that attracts many visitors to take photos.

Team work is also a difficulty for me.This is the first time that i take part in such a long-term group work. When we started to discuss the final chair, our team had a divergence of views. One side thinks we should do a background board which could be changed in different scenes. But the other side thought we should focus on the movement of people.I thought the body language is more interesting to develop.I researched about seating positions and expression of people in selfie and did some component design. New material is also tried on the final chair. We designed some bulges on the chair by wood.We wanted to cover the top of wood blocks by metal. The process should be drawing a continuous line on the metal firstly. Then, using the special scissor to cut down and fold them firstly in a folding machine. The other thing left to do is just keeping knocking it until the metal stick closely.I use whole afternoon to strike the metal piece, however it became rougher. When i started to do the second one, i found the problem was happening in the folding part.I should fold them as close as i could.

4

In conclusion, i tried group design and metal model making in this project. As a designer, i could not always use my idea to the group, communication and description is so important at that time. Group work is a combination of all member’s idea, we could always learn something from others.

Design Language Research:

I will transfer a 2D image to 3D model in next stage,so i find an artist who opens a constant relationship between two media, photography and illustration. He is Andrew G. Fisher .The light seem to flow slowly on the picture. He did this work to stop the perfect moment.

Design Language Model: This 2D collage image is our reference of model. The first model is made of parchment paper, cardboard and foam paper. The geometric shapes is cut down firstly and then height were decided by trying.

The second model is made of foam board, cardboard, foam balls and woolen yarn.We focus on the circle in the collage and create some holes on the main body of the model.

Ritual:Routine of Selfie

I found the shape of all design language model is like architectures that always attract visitors to selfie in front of them. Selfie could show their own personality and view of the object, however there is more and more people focus on how to make some part of body looks better and share the same tutorial of pose. The ritual of this project is criticizing the routine of selfie.

14

Research about Selfie:

There is a artist called Dito Von Tease turned some famous oil painting into selfies to warn. He calls this series “Classicool”.These work describe how selfie become popular now and the artist made a crack that people always holding phones. It seems the most perfect angle to show the most welcome face now.Everybody use this angle to photo when selfie started to become popular. However, the picture of face with 45 degree is different from the daily life face.

Chair Body Part:

This is a chair could adjust the body position by the tight clothes on chair.

I collage it with another material. Each lint hand could be put down easily and rised up hard because of the stress.

The structure inside lint hands should be hard. I think wood is a good choice.

Chair Back Part:

I thought selfie in public area is an embarrassed thing.Just like the 2017 Oscars Awards. So, i design some cover on top of chairs to cover faces or whole body to avoid embarrassment.

Small chair models: This is a chair which could control shoulder position. For the mouth part, i did a research about dentists' tools. It could pull mouthes to any angles.

23

Ideas about final chair:

I research about seating position and regular selfie pose on chair.I decided to do some block to fit the body in.So, the people who selfie on this chair could just have one movement because of the shape of chair.

24

The last pose is the most popular position and the most suitable to express on the IVAR chair.

The leather on 1:1 model is so soft that could not shape the head part.We need the leather hood hang over the chair.

So, we go to a leather workshop in north London for high qulity leather.

1:1 model :

Final model making:

We use a lot of new machine on the leather part.Like leather line cutter, pins for bags. The leather on final chair is more stable. The shape is fixed even if it is placed on a table.

30

The wood part of final models is the main structure of the chair. We reinforce the angle chair from two sides to make the pathway for leather hood. There are also two blocks on it to make users have all the same action when they are selfieing on this chair. The wood block need to be sanded from a cuboid. After finishing the structure, we add on all leather part .

Final Chair: SELFEAR

The location of chair is beside the Thames river. There are always lots of tourists selfie here. The SELFEAR chair could be placed at every tourist attractions
