his issue is all about motherhood VS work. From how babies impact our careers to managing the day-to-day juggle, it’s a battle that’s sadly not talked about enough. In my interview with Christine Armstrong (author of brilliant new book The Mother of all Jobs) we discuss affordable early years care, flexible work, and dads being much more involved. And Alexandra Hunter, our columnist, talks about the logistical nightmare that is an all too familiar reality for most working mamas. Elsewhere in this issue Tracey Samuel, founder of childrenswear brand The bonnie mob, talks sustainability and knitwear. Georgie Ludlow, founder of stylish children’s interior brand Oskoe, shows us how to create an eco-friendly nursery. We also roundup the best winter warmers, for staying cosy now temperatures have dropped. And finally, we meet Great British Bake Off champion Nadiya Hussain to find out more about her first children’s book. Enjoy!

WO R RY MONSTER Nadiya Hussain on writing her first children’s picture book, aimed at helping children with anxiety I n t e r v i e w C A R LY G L E N D I N N I N G
S
he says her feet “haven’t touched the ground” since winning the sixth series of The Great British Bake Off in 2015. One of the show’s greatest successes, Nadiya Hussain has presented TV shows, written columns for leading newspapers, and published more than a few cookery books. But now the mum-of-three is focusing on a very personal project. My Monster and Me is her first children’s picture book with illustrations by the talented Ella Bailey. Having suffered from panic disorder for as long as she can remember, Hussain wanted to help children who might be going through something similar and give parents the tools they need to talk about worries and anxiety. The Great British Bake Off star was the subject of a one-off BBC documentary earlier this year in which she talked frankly about her experiences with anxiety. Aired as part of the BBC’s Mental Health Season,
Nadiya: Anxiety and Me followed Hussain as she visited schools to see what teachers do to help pupils who are suffering from similar problems. As part of the documentary, Hussain also talked to experts at King’s College London in the hope of learning how she could prevent anxiety being passed down to her children. But it was the frank and honest discussion about her own experiences with anxiety and panic attacks in a cognitive behavioural session that earned her the most praise. Hussain revealed how the condition – which had not been formally diagnosed before she took part in the documentary – had seen her pile an enormous amount of pressure on herself and had even been the cause of lost friends. Stemming from childhood bullying and serious health problems in her family, she described it as “a monster” she struggled to control. Hussain’s new children’s book is a heartfelt tale about a little boy whose worry monster follows him everywhere. Inspired by her own experiences, it’s penned in the hope that no child who reads it will have to suffer in silence – as she did. Absolutely Mama caught up with her to find out more.

Q Have you always loved storytelling and did you always want to write a children’s book? A Writing is one of my very first loves – it’s the way I express myself and it’s something I’ve always loved doing. When I was about seven I wrote a poem that won a national competition and that was it, I got really into reading and writing in a big way and I’ve been doing it ever since; reading, writing, lots of poetry. I express myself in writing quite a lot although I never had a diary as a child, it was always make-believe and stories. I’ve written recipe books with stories and I love writing for children, so it’s been exciting to work on my first picture book. Q My Monster and Me has such an important theme. What sparked the idea? A I’ve struggled with anxiety since I was a child. I’ve always thought of that anxiety as my monster. Some days the monster shouts in my face and no matter where I turn, he keeps shouting. Other days he’s behind me and will tap me on the shoulder throughout the day so I can’t totally ignore him. Some days he’s small enough to put into my pocket. He’s always there though. I wanted to share my story with young readers and their
“I wanted to share my story with young readers and their families so they know they are not alone”
families so they know they are not alone and can learn the power of sharing your worries. Q We love the story and the illustrations. How did you come to work with Ella Bailey? A My publishers suggested Ella as the illustrator and I’m so glad they did, I LOVE her illustrations – she really got the message of the book.
Q And finally, what’s the most amazing thing that’s come out of going on the show? A When I finished Bake Off, I thought that was it! I’d fly under the radar and I’ll just go back home and go back to normal life and actually I’ve done quite the opposite. I have been so busy since, my feet haven’t touched the ground. I don’t know if I can still call myself a stay at home mum anymore. It feels like I am still one – but with the added bonus of doing the most amazing job. I don’t have a title but when anyone asks my kids “What does mummy do?” they always respond with “She lives her dreams”. So that has to be the best thing to have come out of going on the show.
Q What sort of stories do you read at home with your own children? And do they have any favourites? A David Walliams is a god in our house; there is nothing the man can do wrong. They absolutely love him and cannot get enough of his books. And my kids are really odd because they really like cookbooks! Q We have to ask, are you watching this year’s Great British Bake Off? What do you think so far? A I’m watching GBBO but always on catch up so I can fast forward through the adverts. Who has time for four tea breaks?!

FLIP XT³ PUSHCHAIR Reviewed by Mamas & Papas Parent Approved Panellist Danielle Lemonious @romeo__italia
I
spotted the Flip XT³ black copper pushchair for the first time at the Parent Approved Panel launch event and my partner and I fell in love instantly. This pushchair, in my opinion, has been designed to make life easier for parents with many great features. The one-handed fold is one of my favourites. When it comes to setting up and putting down the Flip XT³ there is no messing around. This is perfect for when I have baby in one arm and an impatient five year old waiting to go. I can easily pop up or fold away the pushchair with one hand in a matter of seconds. The handle bar can be adjusted by just simply unclipping both sides and pulling it up or down, whichever is suited for you. The two wheels have a 360-degree spin, which has also been a fantastic feature. I couldn’t believe how lightweight this pushchair was, and the lack of space it requires. It fits well in my boot, taking up less than half of the space. It’s also an excellent drive, such a smooth pushing experience for both Italia and I. I’ve had so many people approach me and tell me how gorgeous this pushchair is – it really is stunning and very stylish. mamasandpapas.com

WORK Christine Armstrong author of The Mother of all Jobs
I n t e r v i e w C A R LY G L E N D I N N I N G
Q Tell us about your new book ‘The Mother of all Jobs’. What’s it all about? A It is the stories of twelve families trying to make working parenting work. As told by normal mums and dads with input from doctors, teachers, social workers, therapists and everyone else involved in raising our children. Each chapter is about a different challenge, from managing the bonkers-ness of toddlers, to dramas with school and other mums to different parenting models (solo, both working, dads taking the lead, etc). It’s full of real people who get pissed, swear with their mates and laugh about poo. Q What made you want to write it, and how did your own motherhood journey play into the decision? A When I first tried to combine working and parenting two little girls (we now have three),

I just about had a breakdown. I could not figure out how anyone made it work. To find out where I was going wrong, I started to interview ‘Power Mums’ for Management Today magazine. They were successful women and on the record they told me everything was fine if you work hard and stay well organised. But, over time, I got to know some of them socially and found out that it was really, really hard. Much harder than they said. Many had problems that they couldn’t vocalise on the record when everyone they worked with - and their families - would read it. I realised that if the well-paid women with nannies and other support, the ones who really did ‘lean in’, couldn’t do it, then it must be even worse for everyone else! So I went to talk to them.
“We have to get serious about affordable early years care, flexible work, dads being much more involved”
Q What was your expectation of being a working mum versus the reality? A Honestly, I was a total moron! I loved my job and saw myself as career-focused so I listened to all those career women on panels who said you could do it and I really thought everything would be fine but… Well I wrote the book so that no one ever needs be as ill-informed as I was. Q You talked to lots of different women about their experiences for the book. What was the thing that most surprised you? A The loneliness of many working mothers. How, at this very stressful time, we really need as much support as there is, but time is so limited, we often can’t get it. It can quickly lead to anxiety, depression and a regular extra Nytol. Not to mention unsettled relationships. But there is a lot you can do to make it work if you can learn from what others have tried.
INTERVIEW
Q With so many mothers facing challenges, what do you think needs to change? A First we have to talk about how hard this is so we can even start to talk seriously about changing it. Then we have to get serious about affordable early years care, flexible work, dads being much more involved and - ultimately - getting our mad hours under control. It’s not like it makes us productive. We know long hours lead us to be tired, stressed and make bad decisions. We need to reform how we work in this country and be more productive like the Nordic countries who, the OECD says, have increased their GDP by 10-20% by tackling these issues. Q And finally, what’s the one piece of advice you would give to new mums who are trying to negotiate a flexible working situation? A Whatever you negotiate is meaningless unless you stick to it. Don’t take a pay cut for four days work but actually do five. You’ll get furious and quit. Ask for what you need and then put in place what you need to make it all work. Be as tough as you can be. Also, don’t allow your household to default to you being the do-er of EVERYTHING else just because you are not working full-time. That is truly the path to hell!

Q How did you start The Kind and what’s the ethos behind it? A The Kind Label is an ethical lifestyle brand for kids, which I started almost 5 years ago. Launching The Kind was a logical outcome of everything that was on top of mind for me. The products are made in Ghana because of (half) my roots, I developed children’s products because I had just entered the ‘mom market’ and the line is ethically conscious and kind to both people and the environment because I believe that is what all companies and production chains should strive for. Q How did you make your connections with the craftspeople you work with in Ghana? A Simply by asking artisans and craftspeople if they would be open to collaborate. Around a year after my daughter was born I sort of understood my new role as a mother and found time to work on The Kind around her naps or when travelling for modelling. I took her to Ghana with my father – the first time I had visited in 10 years. It was a really intense but beautiful trip, where we went to workshops and started to learn more about the cultural crafts. Once back in The Netherlands I was so inspired and for the first time in my life I started sketching products. I’d send drawings and molds of the products I designed to the artisans, and with suggestions on their side we started on our first samples. My goals

someone’s life and its addictive nature. You can follow almost anyone and anything and while this can make an artist or famous person more ‘human’ it can also make you feel insecure about your own life. It looks like everyone else is doing a lot of fun stuff, is successful and beautiful.
for The Kind weren’t to grow big as fast as possible. I just took steps that felt natural, adjusted while we were working and slowly but surely our brand started to form. Q How important is Instagram to The Kind? And what do you like and dislike about the platform? A Instagram is very important to The Kind. I get around 80% of my customers through the platform and it is the only promotion I am doing at this time. I started a separate Instagram page before The Kind and even before I travelled to Ghana. Under an account named ‘African inspired’ I would share artisans, crafts, or other images I found inspiring. I started gaining followers and when 6 months later I finally had my first Moses basket sample the reactions were overwhelming! Without Instagram The Kind would not be what it is today. What I dislike about the platform is the counter side of how easy it is to peek into
Q How do you juggle the business around family life? A I recently felt it was time for a change, because our previous, non-existing schedule wasn’t working and I couldn’t get anything done, which was frustrating. The past year I was taking it day by day, but while writing this, this is the first day of having a babysitter at the house so that I can actually get some work done. For example, before I would be in Paris for 5 days for modelling, then home with the kids for 5 days before leaving for Stockholm for 3 days. The Kind and all the work that comes with it – designing, answering emails, sending packages – had to be done in between. Combining The Kind with modelling is fun, hectic at times, but also necessary, so I am very grateful to have the opportunity. In the end I do intend that The Kind grows enough so that it can be my main source of income, simply because then I can spend all my work time on it and it feels a bit like my third baby.
Q And finally, best and worst bits about motherhood? A The best thing about being a mom is the girls in general and the unconditional love I feel for them. Because of my experiences in life, in combination with my personality, I find it hard to believe in ‘happily ever after’ and I am not a romantic soul. Growing up with a single mom, I was taught to be independent and not to rely on a partner. Being with my boyfriend for over seven years, becoming a mom and surrendering myself to motherhood taught me how selfless and loving I could become and how rewarding that is. My love for them is so pure and nothing will ever come in they way of that. The worst bit would have to be that now that I feel like I’ve learnt about life and myself and I’m more inspired and confident, there is not enough time in each day left to actually do something with this! But the girls are getting more independent each day and I am the type of mom that loves that. So far I don’t find it hard to let them go and explore the world on their own. I feel proud when my oldest says “no mom, I can do this myself now” and our youngest, who is a real explorer by nature, just walks off on her own little adventure. I think as long as they know we are a safe and consistent place for them to come back to and we will love them no matter what happens, we can and should let them live and celebrate life in their own way. TIME
Absolutely Mama meets model Ruth Crilly to talk about her new app The Night Feed
I n t e r v i e w C A R LY G L E N D I N N I N G
Q Tell us about The Night Feed app. How does it work? A The Night Feed is a new app for mums who are up feeding through the night. It’s a place to go where everyone is in the same boat, which is brilliant when you’re feeling lonely in the night and it seems as though the rest of the world is blissfully asleep! Once you’ve downloaded it that’s it; you’re in and you can visit whenever you want, to quietly read articles and diary entries, or join in with chats or ask others for advice. While you’re doing all of this, the app records your baby’s feed - whether bottle or breast - and stores the info so that you can see at a glance how often your baby has fed, how long they fed for and which boob they last fed from! Q How did your own motherhood journey play in the decision to launch it? A When I was night feeding with my second baby, I was just desperate for something to keep me entertained through the night. Something with a touch of humour, helpful articles that spoke to me… I got really sick of aimlessly scrolling through the Internet and wanted somewhere I’d look forward to visiting!
they would. Users come back multiple times a night and check daily for new content, which is quite a big thing for such a new app. I couldn’t be more pleased. Q Do you have any funny stories from your own experience of night feeding? A Oh, how low do you want me to go?! There are plenty of bodily malfunctions I could horrify you with, but I think one of the funniest times (looking back, it was terrible at the time) was when a nappy had been put on inside out and we couldn’t work out why poo and wee was just going everywhere. It was absolute carnage. Never put a nappy on in the dark. Q What were the biggest challenges you faced setting it up? A The tech side presented the biggest challenges to me, as that’s really not my forté – at least with apps. I’m a dab hand at websites now but app development was a different ballgame! I worked really closely with the developers and it was a massive learning curve, making decisions and trying to envisage the end product. Q What has the reaction been like so far? A Amazing! I’ve felt quite overwhelmed with happiness actually, because people are using The Night Feed exactly as I hoped
Q And finally, how do you juggle motherhood/a busy work schedule? A I’d love to say that I’m really organised, etc etc, but I’m quite a chaotic person. So I’ve had to learn to be more ordered. I have a nanny for two days a week (for the past three years) and so I try to get the bulk of my work done then. But if I’m honest I work most nights and just shoe horn the work in whenever I can! Luckily I love what I do and I’m always writing notes on random pieces of paper, so I don’t think I ever truly turn my work brain off. thenightfeed.uk November 2019

“I know so many women who often work long into the night because they left work ‘early’ to collect their tinies”
real mum talk...
Telling it Like it is Alexandra Hunter on juggling work and motherhood
I
’ve written about going back to work post-baby and about career changing but never about the daily logistical nightmare that many of us face as working mothers. There are so many issues surrounding work and motherhood; some are archaic and are ingrained in society and there are those that many of us voluntarily claim as our own. I know so many women who often work long into the night because they left work ‘early’ to collect their tinies. So many feel guilty or that they’ll be judged if they don’t achieve everything that they did before they obtained their other full time job of parenting, to run in tandem with a career. Honestly, being a working mother can be hard. When I returned to work after maternity leave I was a Director in a medium size company and I loved
my job, I took it seriously. My anxiety used to peak daily when I was living in London and trying to leave work at 5 (I worked through lunch and arrived hideously early) in order to get to nursery on time. It was always a very tense hour, battling traffic from one side of London to the other, knowing I would be charged some absurd fee by the nursery if I was even minutes late. I would frantically jump between traffic apps, taking back streets and B roads to dodge every possible jam. Inevitably I would arrive at nursery exhausted, wired and full of guilt that other people were caring for my child when that was the job I wanted. I was lucky, my company was fantastic and very supportive of parenting and many of the pressures I felt were self inflicted. That said it was always tricky managing client meetings to
ensure they always ended by 4.30, particularly if the clients were male or didn’t have kids. I always felt it would be perceived as skiving if I acknowledged that I had to leave to collect my child as though it were not a valid reason. Obviously it is. I remember one day being in a very important meeting and my phone was vibrating insistently in my pocket. I knew it could only be about my child. I left the meeting and took the call and of course I had to leave and get Seb, who was vomiting and crying at nursery. I didn’t get that deal but I did get to look after my child when I was the one person he really needed. My life changed unexpectedly and irrevocably a few years ago and I had to leave London. I commuted from Oxford to Shoreditch for a year because I truly loved our company and had helped build it from scratch but realistically it was too much and I needed a complete rethink. Two years later I am now a primary school teacher and I chose this career in part because it works in conjunction with (single) parenting. I won’t get to take Seb to school and watch him walk through the gates on his very first day as I’ll be welcoming thirty children who will spend the year in my care and that makes me sad. But I will get to spend every day of all of the holidays playing with him until he no longer wants to play with me and the prospect of this fills me with joy. I earn less now than I did when I started in my first job fresh from university but having weighed it up I know I have made the right decision. November 2019

KNITS TO KNOW Tracey Samuel of The bonnie mob on launching a sustainable knitwear brand I n t e r v i e w C A R LY G L E N D I N N I N G
Q How did you come to set up The bonnie mob? A I got pregnant! 15 years ago I was a designer at Sonia Rykiel in Paris with a rather glamorous lifestyle where I’d travel to Paris on a Monday and stay during the week and return home to Brighton at the weekends. I had the best of both worlds with a cute little flat with a view of the Eiffel tower. When my daughter Alice arrived I knew that my lifestyle just wouldn’t be compatible with a newborn and I was ready for a change. So armed with my knitwear expertise I started my own little babywear brand. I had no idea it would grow as quickly as my daughter and it would become a fully-fledged family business with my husband Gareth heading up the sales team. Q Tell us about your background in knitwear... A I studied an MA in knitwear at St Martins back in the late ‘90s graduating with the likes of Stella McCartney and Alexander McQueen. It was a fantastic time; we were really riding a wave – with British designers heading up fashion houses all over the world. Straight from college, I was offered my dream job at a factory in the UK which had just invested in millions of pounds worth of new Japanese knitting machines! I got to play and develop my technical skills; I still use things today that I learned back then. I then took another dream job at Sonia Rykiel, where I stayed for nearly 10 years working as a senior knitwear designer. Looking back now, it was such a privilege to work directly with an icon like Madame Rykiel. I really honed my eye for quality, love of colour and appreciation for ‘fun French chic’.

fash io n INTERVIEW
“I love nothing more than seeing our clothing passed down to second and third siblings”
I always call myself a bit of a knit geek, I love nothing more than chatting about new techniques with the knit technicians in my factories. They are highly skilled people who know their stuff. I have the kind of brain that needs to know how something works before I can design a product. That’s probably why our products are so well made; they have to go through the Tracey geek test before they are released onto the public! Q The bonnie mob has had famous fans including Gwyneth Paltrow, what do you think has made the brand so successful? A I think the quality and design integrity speaks for itself, it really does stand apart from other knitwear brands when you see it in a store. So many fans receive it as a gift then understand why it’s so good, returning to buy for themselves. It’s lovely to know that someone famous appreciates your designs and we have been known to do a little happy dance in the office when orders come through for certain American twins or to be delivered to regal addresses. But I honestly get a huge kick when any happy customer takes the time to send us a lovely review to acknowledge how much they appreciate our quality and style. Q How important is sustainability to the business? A It has become our most important goal.
I have two very vocal teens, who are very worried about climate change and are marching with their classmates at every protest. As a business owner I feel the responsibility to be accountable for my part in that. We set The bonnie mob up all those years ago with the ethos to ‘buy once, buy well, pass it on’. This hasn’t changed; I love nothing more than seeing our clothing passed down to second and third siblings. We’ve been working very hard over the past 5 years to move, as much as we can, to a sustainable and honest way of working. We use organic cotton, compostable plastic bags, recycled hangtags, and sea freight to transport our seasonal shipments. The most exciting project I’ve been working on recently is our new ZERO D sustainable printing. It’s a brand new concept we’ve been developing with our amazing factory. It uses 90% less water than standard dyeing, is 100% free from nasty chemicals and the 10% of water it does use is so pure it feeds the most lush vegetable garden in the factory grounds. I really believe this could and should be a game changer; if customers demand it from the brands they buy from, things will change. If a small business like mine can take the time and pay extra to source solutions, then there really is no excuse for big brands to be using plastic, or polluting the earth. Q What’s the inspiration behind your new collection? A Last year we took the kids with us to NY. I picked up a beautiful kids book by illustrator Jean Jullien based around the lyrics of the song ‘Imagine’ by John Lennon. It reignited my love for the song and for John Lennon, his legacy and what he stood for. We went to Strawberry Fields in Central Park and the kids and I came up with the idea
for the new season. In the collection you’ll find peace pandas, musical strawberries, dancing guitars and rainbow doves all given The bonnie mob pinch of fun and softness. I really wanted to embody a general feeling of love and a wish to live in peace; it felt like something we all need in these times of uncertainty. That’s why the only name we could give the collection was IMAGINE. Q And finally, tell us about this season’s charity collection... A This season’s charity collection follows the same ethos as the main collection. We’ve played with a fun love heart motif and made twinning sweaters in our signature cashmere touch knits. For mum, the slogan is ‘all you need is LOVE’ and for babies/kids it’s ‘LOVE is all you need’. I think this is the most pure message we can offer for something that is helping raise funds for refugee mothers and their babies. Q Were you always interested in cooking and food from a young age? A Yes! I’ve always loved cooking – even when I was just a little girl. I used to help my grandmother in the kitchen, baking cakes or picking fresh herbs from her vegetable garden. Many of my happiest memories are food related! These days, we’re all so time-poor that I think people have forgotten how great it is to teach kids how to make things from scratch and really take the time to teach them about ingredients and how to use fresh produce. Q After a long day at work, what are you go-to family meals? A My very favourite thing about what I do is helping people realise that cooking doesn’t have to be difficult (or timeconsuming) to be fabulous. Let’s face it – we all have busy lives; the key is knowing when and where to cheat! I stand by my line…. If you have eggs – you have dinner! If we’re really short of time my boys love a spinach omelette for dinner. In summer, I love a bit of DIY, I put a big board on the table filled with salad and shredded veg and chicken and they make their own rice paper rolls or ‘salad boats’.
“Many of my happiest memories are food related!” Q Do you cook with your children? A They love getting involved in the kitchen, which is great, and when they were younger we often cooked together – but these days they quite often cook for themselves! Their current speciality is sushi and they really like making pizza. My youngest is very specific about what he likes in his lunchbox, too, so he often helps me out with his special requests. But if I’m cooking, I love it if they’re hanging out in the kitchen chatting with me as I cook.
Q What’s it like raising a family in Sydney? A Well, I don’t want to sound smug but umm… Amazing! Sydney is my hometown and there’s nothing I love more than spending my free time enjoying the sunshine, sparkling sights and beautiful food. The city has a lot to offer, wonderful warm weather and so many world-class beaches within just a few kilometres of the Central Business District. There’s so much to do with lots of options to have a great time outdoors with my boys. Plus, the Australian restaurant and café culture means there are loads of casual places with great fresh food to take the boys to dinner. Q How do you juggle motherhood and such a busy career? A I try my best to have work life boundaries. My aim each day is to leave work behind in the car on the drive home, then I don’t check my emails once I get home (well, hardly ever!). Our office rule is ‘family first’. My boys are at an age now where they want to chat, they want you to be engaged and have a laugh with them. Boys, well my boys – have a great sense of humour!

While the broccoli balls are baking, make the miso carrot salad. Place the miso paste, mirin and honey in a large bowl and mix to combine. Add the carrot and red-veined sorrel and toss to combine.
Spinach and zucchini fritters
Divide the salad between serving bowls and top with the broccoli balls to serve.
cook’s notes • I t’s really easy to bake trays and trays of these rice balls and freeze them for later. • You can swap the rice for quinoa or other cooked grains.
Chocchunk tahini cookies
1 cup (280g/10 oz) hulled tahini (see cook’s notes) 1 cup (220g/7¾ oz) raw caster (superfine) sugar 1/3 cup (80ml/2¾ fl oz) maple syrup 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 1 egg 2 cups (280g/10 oz) wholemeal (whole-wheat) spelt flour ¼ teaspoon bicarbonate of (baking) soda ¼ teaspoon baking powder 200g (7 oz) chopped dark chocolate
Preheat oven to 160°C (325°F). Line 2 large baking trays with non-stick baking paper. Place the tahini, sugar, maple syrup, vanilla and egg in a large bowl and mix well to combine. Place the flour, bicarbonate of soda and baking powder in a medium bowl and stir to combine. Sift the flour mixture into the tahini mixture and mix well to combine. Add the chocolate and fold to combine. Roll heaped tablespoons of the dough into 24 balls and place on the trays. Flatten the cookies slightly and bake for 12–14 minutes or until light golden. Allow to cool on the trays.
cook’s notes • T his recipe works best when a smooth, thick, hulled tahini is used. Avoid those jars that have fully settled on the shelf (with a large layer of oil at the top and dried-out tahini underneath). Look for a fresh, good-quality, blended variety. • Y ou can swap the spelt flour for buckwheat flour to make these cookies gluten free. Just double check your baking powder is gluten free too!
4 cups (750g/1 lb 10 oz) firmly packed grated zucchini (courgette) (about 4 zucchinis) 1 cup (60g/2 oz) firmly packed finely chopped English spinach ½ cup (8g/¼ oz) mint leaves, shredded 5 eggs ¾ cup (90g/3 oz) almond meal (ground almonds) ½ cup (40g/1½ oz) finely grated parmesan ¼ cup (50g/1¾ oz) white chia seeds sea salt and cracked black pepper extra virgin olive oil, for cooking Place the zucchini between sheets of absorbent kitchen paper and press to remove any excess moisture. Place the zucchini, spinach, mint, eggs, almond meal, parmesan, chia seeds, salt and pepper in a large bowl and mix to combine. Allow to stand for 20–30 minutes. Heat an 18cm–20cm (7 in–8 in) non-stick frying pan over medium-low heat. Add a little oil and ½ cup of the fritter mixture. Spread the mixture thinly to cover the base of the pan. Cook for 6–8 minutes each side or until golden. Remove the fritter from the pan and place on a sheet of non-stick baking paper. Repeat with the remaining mixture, adding more oil as necessary, to make 8 fritters.
cook’s notes • T he secret to turning these crispy fritters is to let them cook for the full 6 minutes on each side – don’t be tempted to flip too early! • Y ou can wrap any leftover fritters and keep them in the fridge. When ready to use, cover and warm them slightly in the oven.

HORMONE H AC K Motherhood, at every stage, can send our hormones spiralling. Due to its natural approach, the wellness industry is looking to Traditional Chinese Medicine to help redress the balance… Wo r d s E M I L I A H E R T I N G
M
others come into our clinic every day feeling off and wonder what’s wrong and what they need to take to ‘fix’ it. Often, imbalances of any kind are due to very simple lifestyle habits and routines we practice daily that are throwing us off-kilter and so our system gets out of whack and hormones off balance. But when we have an understanding about what’s going on inside, we’re better equipped to make subtle lifestyle or dietary changes that will naturally correct and balance us over time – mentally and physically. The beauty of this approach is, it’s all within your
control. Chinese Medicine recognises that different types of constitutions need to be looked after in different ways when the body is out of balance. Once your type has been identified, there is so much you can do to support your body for greater health and wellbeing.
Hormones in TCM: A Different Perspective
Hormones are chemical messengers that influence the way our cells and organs function, controlling growth, development, reproduction, metabolism, mood, sleep and digestion. Levels fluctuate naturally and are part of our inbuilt life cycle, but can be disrupted in many ways such as stress, sleep deprivation, diet, prescription medicines and harmful daily toxins and pollution.

welln es s ADVICE
5 TCM TYPES “Mothers come into our clinic every day feeling off and wonder what’s wrong and what they need to take to ‘fix’ it”
In TCM hormonal balance is closely tied to the concept of Yin and Yang balance – two forces, opposite in nature but also dependent on one another in order to function properly. Just as it is important for estrogen and progesterone to be balanced, so too should the Yin and Yang ratio. Too much or too little in the body leads to excess cold, heat, or dampness which in turn leads to hormonal imbalances and more long-lasting problems. Depending on the disharmony-pattern, women can experience a range of symptoms when they are unbalanced from tiredness and sleeping irregularities to skin breakouts, PMS, weight gain, digestive imbalances, anxiety or even depression, just to name a few! Because of this, our body and hormone household is very precious and we need to take care of it. At Escapada, our four pillars of health are general lifestyle recommendations and can be a great starting point to bring balance back into your life and bodily ecosystem. Start with these small changes and observe how they make you feel: D iet: eat whole foods that are colourful and seasonal and cook as much as possible yourself to ensure you’re getting all the nutrients needed. Cut down on alcohol and cigarettes as they will deplete essential fluids (Yin) and promote the formation of damp toxins. E xercise: vigorous exercise can deplete your Qi (vital energy) and your blood so choose mindful exercises such as yoga, meditation and walking to calm your emotions and keep your Qi levels stable. L ifestyle: stress increases your hormone levels so acknowledge the noise in your life by doing
24hr digital detoxes on weekends and switching off after 7pm. Natural treatments: acupuncture is excellent for treating stress and anxiety, and regulating hormone levels and body imbalances that go hand in hand with motherhood. Individualised herbal prescriptions can work to harmonise bodily functions and make you feel strong, resilient and healthy again. Once you have started implementing these general lifestyle changes to support your hormone health, it’s time to find out what your main imbalances are so that you can get individualised advice. In TCM we call this ‘finding your constitutional disharmony pattern’ which helps us, as practitioners, give you long-lasting lifestyle and nutritional treatment advice to maintain your hormonal balance. Most likely you will have more than one imbalance, which is why we always advise booking in with a Chinese Medicine Practitioner for a one to one consultation and tailor-made treatment plan that suits your every need. Find your TCM constitutional ‘type’ in the panel on the right to help you gain balance at home.

DEEP CLEAN
’m in Marylebone to find out about LPG endermologie®, the latest natural, non-invasive and non-aggressive antiageing and beauty contouring technology. Put simply: it makes skin healthier from within. The machine delivers an intense but pleasant massage (I’m even given a demo to prove that it’s pain-free). Not only can it be used to firm and smooth excess skin and stretch marks caused by pregnancy, it can also encourage a healthy healing process, loosening scar tissue or reducing the appearance of scars. If only I had known about this after having my last baby – I have a prominent keloid scar from my second C-section. The best benefits are seen if treatments start within two months of giving birth. The machine also relieves another common pregnancy problem – swollen, painful or heavy-feeling legs. Increased water retention can put a strain on the uterus and surrounding blood vessels – but by stimulating cells underneath the skin and blood flow through the veins, the patented treatment enhances lymphatic drainage. In some cases up to a litre of water can be drained, leaving patients feeling far more comfortable – and instantly lighter!

G R E E N D R E A M S Georgie Ludlow, founder of Oskoe, on how to create a sustainable nursery
THE BASE
Think about starting with a neutral canvas that can be changed and added to as your little one grows. So plain walls and floors can be updated with rugs, soft furnishings and even wall stickers. Ensure any paint used is non toxic and low-VOC. This will be better for the environment and the air your baby is breathing.
SOFT FURNISHINGS AND TEXTILES
As your baby will spend the majority of their time sleeping (fingers crossed!) the mattress and bedding should be chosen carefully. Make sure you go for cotton, natural fibres and free from any chemical treatments so it’s kind to your little one. Breathability and comfort are important to keep in mind too.
NURSERY BY HOLLY LITTLE @_HOLLY_ROSE
A
s awareness and interest grows about sustainability, it’s getting easier to make the right choices for your little ones and the world they will grow up in. There are lots of brands designing ecofriendly products now, and we stock a carefully edited selection for families in our lifestyle store, Oskoe. When it comes to designing your little one’s nursery, thinking carefully about the materials and products you choose, as well as how they will interact with the space, will all help to have a positive impact on the environment. From nontoxic paint, to decor crafted from natural materials, here are a few little tips.

perated by the Carlton Hotel Collection, Market Street is the first hotel in Scotland to be awarded prestigious Design Hotels status. The highly anticipated new opening is nestled in between the historic buildings of Edinburgh, the contemporary architecture boldly soaring up through the iconic skyline. We arrive by taxi from the airport and step into a small entrance area, where we’re greeted by a friendly concierge. Immediately getting the feeling that all the action is at the top, we ride the elevator to the 7th floor to check-in at the reception. The doors open and we’re met with sprawling views across the city. The offer of a complimentary glass of champagne provides the perfect excuse to flop down on the sofas in the hotel’s Nor’ Loft and take it all in.

D
esigned by FG Stijl, the hotel’s interiors politely acknowledge Scotland’s heritage. Baronial touches rub shoulders with modern design classics from the likes of Fritz Hansen and Saint Luc, alongside custom-made furniture and handcrafted pieces. Each room has a unique configuration and outlook to the city, with the vision of creating a unique experience for every guest. Slotting the keycard into our door, we step straight into a modern ante-chamber. There’s wardrobe space ahead and a solid stone basin perched atop a vanity unit to our right. A sleek bathroom boasts a rainfall shower by Via Bizzuno. The hotel has thought of everything we could possibly need – Votary beauty products, GHD hair straighteners, a Dyson hairdryer, and there’s even a Philips steamer in the drawer. The bedroom is cosy, every design detail conceived with comfort in mind. Inspired by the original window fixtures of the Old Town, floor to ceiling wooden shutters block out the early morning light. Absolutely essential, as the bed is so heavenly you’ll want to sleep in (if any mini guests with you allow, of course). We appreciated touches like the pillow menu and a free minibar that’s replenished every day. The hotel can provide a cot and they offer a babysitting service as well.
B
reakfast is served each morning in the hotel’s champagne lounge, the Nor’ Loft. On the first morning, we take a window seat to make the most of the views. You can fill up on the continental buffet - which even offered vegan croissants - or order from the menu. The waitress is happy to accommodate my request for glutenfree toast and my husband enjoys a full Scottish breakfast, with haggis. Champagne is fully encouraged whatever the time of the day but is not to be missed out on the terrace at sundown. The hotel is passionate about bubbles, and offer 20 different varieties. Bring the ticket from your room up for complimentary glass. We order a selection of small plates as well, which are all delicious. The menu is seasonal, with innovative flavour combinations such as smoked mackerel mousse on rye with grapefruit mayonnaise and salmon roe.
THINGS TO DO
W
e visit in autumn, which is a great time of year to go if your little ones are small as you avoid the crowds who descend for the Fringe. Poised between the old town and the new, Market Street is in the perfect position for exploring the city. Mini fans of Harry Potter will be happy to find that Edinburgh Castle and the famous Royal Mile are only a short stroll away. J. K. Rowling penned the world’s favourite wizarding stories in Edinburgh and you can’t get far without stumbling across one of the city’s many sights that inspired Hogwarts (there is also, of course, plenty of gift shops to satisfy those hankering after a Hufflepuff hoodie). Arthur’s Seat might not be advisable with a buggy, but there are lots of other great places to enjoy the views. The National Museum of Scotland has brilliant interactive play areas to keep little ones entertained and once they are worn out, you can head up to the roof terrace for another panoramic vantage point across the city. The up from London contingent is catered to with lots of cool eateries and independent shops. We queue for homemade gelato at Mary’s Milk Bar (the vegan honey and fig ‘sorbet’ is unreal) and peruse the interiors treasure trove that is lifestory; they have a great curation of brands – from Hay to Studio Arhoj. refined grandeur is the order of the day at Beaverbrook – as it appears to be throughout this quietly contented corner of Surrey. The magnificent main building, former home of Lord Beaverbrook, has been beautifully maintained. Artworks and antiques jostle for space in the airy central atrium, while the stunning Sir Frank’s Bar is decorated floor to ceiling with landscapes, horticultural paintings and animal portraits from the four corners of the arly modern globe. Our accommodation was in more contemporary quarters a short walk up the drive, two adjoining rooms featuring large, luxuriously appointed bathrooms, walk-in showers, superking beds and views across the estate. Everything, from layout and decor to the choice of family amenities, was perfectly pitched.

T
he spectacular scale of the grounds is revealed in halting fashion. As you approach the house itself, you only catch glimpses of what’s in store: open meadows and ornamental gardens, a kids’ playground built around a wooden tree-fort. But the full panorama is witnessed for the first time after checking in and making your way to the rear lawns, where shell grottos and tinkling fountains recline beneath stone steps and towering shade-trees. It’s a fine spot to watch the sun set over the wooded slopes that surround the estate.
W
e hitched a ride on a buggy to dinner at The Garden House Restaurant (which doubles as a cookery school). The building and its peaceful terrace lead out onto wildflower meadows and one of the most replete kitchen gardens you’ve ever seen, complete with Victorian glasshouse. Our littles loved gambolling around it in the gathering twilight, naming the vegetables that were shortly to be seen again, reconfigured and delicious, on our dinner plates. The food was as magical as the setting and the service warmly attentive – staff were swift and happy to help when a sudden downpour meant we had to abandon our terrace table.
B
eaverbrook offers trout-fishing, clay pigeon-shooting and wine-tasting, but there’s lots for families too. Think tennis, indoor and outdoor pools, and a kids club with activities organised by popular entertainers Sharky and George – not to mention this mama’s favourite, the exquisite Coach House Health Club & Spa. Check the website for the different day-spa packages, which are underpinned by a belief and expertise in natural healing.

las Mor nestles on a hillside in Trenance, on the northern slopes of Mawgan Porth. It’s within walking distance of the village and beach, though it may prove easier to drive if you have young children or buggies (not to mention bags full of blankets, towels and beach toys). The house’s high perch gives it a winning view of the cove, with glorious picture windows capturing every glint of sun on the sea. It’s ideally suited to families, with a washing machine, kingsize beds, plush carpets (so luxurious after a day on the sand) and the largest sofa you’ve ever seen. Oh and the outdoor shower was sublime, post-surf.

The Village
The Area
he hamlet of Mawgan Porth consists of a few decent shops, cafes and several dozen houses, but it punches well above its weight in tourism terms – mainly due to its beach. The cove is west-facing, making for reliable surf waves and dazzling sunsets. The sand is clean, the water too – and when you’ve sampled its charms and are ready to venture further afield, you’re spoiled for choice. Five minutes to the south are the beach and many amenities of the famous Watergate Bay – but there’s more to come...
ifteen minutes northeast, lies Padstow, a mini St Ives filled with pasty shops, quayside icecream vendors, boats bobbing and seagulls shrieking. We walked along the harbourside and up the hill beyond, past the war memorial and down bramblelined, blackberry-studded paths to a ‘hidden’ beach on the tidal reaches of the Camel Estuary. Stepping over rocks, watching the tide outrun our lengthening shadows, we were filled with a deep peace – and a pronounced desire to extend our trip.

nyone partial to a spot of surfing will want to test the local breaks. Coldplay’s Chris Martin took lessons in Mawgan Porth a few months before we arrived! We surfed with Kingsurf, whose owner, Pete, is possibly the most enthusiastic and likeable surf instructor in the world. (His group lessons also cost about a third of what you’d pay in places like Portugal and Hawaii.) After catching some waves we decamped 15 minutes down the road to Craftworks, an organic, mostly al fresco street-food restaurant on an organic farm. We dined on vegan tacos and swilled craft cocktails while the sun went down over the fields – and our kids happily ran riot in the gathering twilight.

Thinking of moving house in the new year? Here’s why you need to act now
C
hristmas is a time for big decisions. Getting married, having a baby, changing career – all of these things are triggered during those long, slow days between Christmas and new year, when there’s time to reflect on living your best life in the year to come. And the same goes for moving house, because everyone knows that January is the time to sell property. New year, new home. Maybe next year you’ll move out of town, or move to be near a school, or finally get that extra bedroom. But moving house differs from those other life-changing intentions in its timing, because while
January is very much the time to sell (or let) your property, the time to act is in fact right now. Rightmove’s statistics show a huge rise in property searches over the Christmas period. In 2018, the site had 10 million visitors on Christmas Day, rising to 30 million on 29 December. By 3 Jan there were 40 million. People looking at properties online over the break will be ready to view them in early January – so if you’re looking to sell or let your property then, the wisdom is that you need to be ready before Christmas. Which means starting now. Tom Foreman-Browne, lettings manager at KFH Bayswater, says: “We always get back to the office after

the new year to bundles of enquiries from corporate clients with new jobs starting in London and they need to move fast. Often they want to experience period homes overlooking garden squares – when one of those comes up for rent we’ve always got lots of families waiting.” At the Hammersmith branch, sales manager Hannah Hewett advises: “Lots of people wait until the tree’s down and then call the agent in January. But if you do that, you’ll come on the market when all your neighbours are on – so buyers will have more choice and take longer to decide.” She advises being ready to launch just before Christmas, not because you’ll get any viewings then, but so that you’ll be seen online by the Boxing Day browsers. At the moment, she says: “we’re riding a wave of high demand and low supply; vendors are scared and risk averse. Buyers are returning, but they’re complaining of not enough stock. Last year we had a lettings boom and a lot of those tenants are now looking to buy.” So if you’re planning on selling up in 2020, now’s the time to get your valuation. And get those pictures taken before the tree goes up. The KFH team can help you navigate the process. Find one of their branches at kfh.co.uk At KFH we regularly advise and find properties for families of all ages and stages of life. We have over 60 branches across London, so even if you continue your search in another location, our team of sales and lettings experts are on hand to assist you in every step of your journey. kfh.co.uk November 2019 | 89

omework can be an emotive subject. For some, that feeling of Sunday night dread (when you’d left it to the last possible moment) never properly leaves us. Still creeping up in waves of panic like an irrational fear, or returning to us in nightmares. For others, one too many excuses about peckish dogs brings back memories sparking guilt or regret. When our own children start school, the nightmares can quickly turn into nightly battles that often end with us picking up the pencil in order to get it done. Attention spans are short after a long day at school and homework takes time away from family life. In this country homework commonly starts in reception, taking the form of reading. From Year 1 and into Year 2, children are usually expected to complete one to two tasks per week. But parents are questioning if this is too early and ultimately if homework is necessary at all. It’s a hot topic at the moment due to a new framework that was introduced in the state system in September. Ofsted has said its inspectors will not assess how homework is being done because schools should decide whether or not they set it for their students. This marks a huge departure in the inspection regime, which previously looked at homework as part of the way it approached the teaching, learning, and assessment of children. Independent schools are of course free to set their own policies about homework and the approach is varied. Queen’s Gate Junior School in South Kensington takes the view that homework can be of value, if it’s set in a constructive way. Mr James Denchfield, director of the school says: “It befalls good schools not only to teach well but also to nurture essential
“For some, that feeling of sunday night dread (when you'd left it to the last possible moment) never properly leaves us” learning skills, such as independence, self-motivation and retention of information,” he continues “homework is at its most beneficial when it asks pupils not just to review what they have learnt but to understand why they have learnt it, as they make the leap from specific task to general rule. Well-conceived, purposeful tasks, which draw on pupils’ creativity and demand lateral thinking are the most satisfying to undertake and are the ones which leave the greatest impression in children’s minds.” The King Alfred School in Golders Green, north-west London takes a more progressive stance.
Head of Lower School, Karen Thomas says: “At The King Alfred School we’ve chosen not to set homework for our Lower School students in order to remove undue pressure for our children and their families. Using enquiry as our main pedagogical approach we create enough exciting opportunities in the school day to trigger their curiosity and open the door to learning both in and out of school. We like to keep parents fully informed as to what is happening in the classrooms in order to enable rich conversations at home. Our oldest students have home learning projects in order to prepare them for their transition to the Upper School which is something they themselves requested.” November 2019 | 91

r e s ou rces EDUCATION
“Ofsted's 2018 report stated that homework is a 'huge stress' for families in the UK” Ofsted’s 2018 report stated that homework is a “huge stress” for families in the UK. Of the parents they collected feedback from, a third felt that it is not helpful for primary school-age children – an opinion that was at the centre of a high profile Twitter debate at the end of 2018. The fray in question started when comedian Rob Delaney wrote: “Why do they give seven-year-olds so much homework in the UK and how do I stop this?” Football presenter Gary Lineker typed back, agreeing that children “should be allowed to play and enjoy home life with their parents without the divisiveness of work
they have plenty of time to do at school.” However, Good Morning Britain presenter Piers Morgan weighed in with the opposite opinion. He wrote: “As a nation, we’re falling so far behind educational standards of countries like China, it’s embarrassing.” The consensus around the world is indeed varied. In Finland, a country that consistently tops global education rankings, children start school at age seven and the homework they receive is minimal, and in some schools, they don’t get any at all. In the New York private system (a city famed for being enslaved to the rat race) homework also starts much
later. Most schools begin with play-based learning, only bringing homework into the equation at third or fourth grade. But this is not the case in other highpressured societies. Having previously taught in London, Sophie Helsby is a Grade 1 teacher in an independent school on the outskirts of Tokyo. She feels that the parents in Japan put too much focus on their child’s future success. She says: “In the school I work in, we have to set homework weekly. The parents actually want it and they always ask for more,” she continues, “we do enough at school to support their learning and we want kids to come to school energised and well-rested. I always tell parents that their children need time at home to relax and play, but they don’t really understand that here.” Academic results are of course a huge factor for parents when they are looking for a school that will be best suited for their child. But thought about whether homework contributes to higher success rates for younger children tends to vary. A 2001 meta-study by the National Foundation for Educational Research concluded that there was “a positive relationship between time spent and outcomes at secondary level” but “evidence at primary level is inconsistent”. Conor Heaven, a former teacher and Digital Learning Leader at TT Education argues that while homework can have “zero impact”, there’s a difference between homework and home learning. He says: “even from the youngest ages, the one most important thing that should happen every week without fail is reading,” he continues “there are primary schools that have got rid of homework completely. They have seen that they don’t gain any value from it, but reading absolutely would still carry on in this scenario.” Like or loathe the idea of homework, one thing for sure is the importance of books for young learners. Not only does it help with language acquisition and literacy skills, but it expands children’s imaginations and their understanding of the world. And bedtime stories may just be the antidote to those nightmares about hungry dogs.

Parents benefit from the ease of one drop-off and a co-ed nursery
Optimal Single Sex Is there a third way between single sex and coeducational learning? Eaton House The Manor operates a 'one site two schools' system Wo r d s O L I V E R S N OW BA L L
O
ne of the fundamental decisions for parents is between co-ed and single sex education. There are many benefits to single sex education, not least the fact that boys and girls tend to develop and mature at different rates. There is also an argument to say that boys can be more expressive around their peers and girls less plagued with gender stereotyping when they are educated in single sex schools. It helps that both girls’ and boys’ schools are free to develop their curriculums with the sex that they are teaching in mind. Girls who are educated separately tend to be confident and strong, believing that
nothing is beyond them. At Eaton House Schools, which only educates children in single sex schools outside the nurseries, girls have won 33 Academic, Art, Music, Drama and Sports scholarships in the last three years. They are actively encouraged to express their opinions using challenging, open-ended questions. This system allows Eaton House girls to construct a belief system that stands the test of time. Notwithstanding these benefits, parents sometimes wonder if co-ed is somehow more reflective of society. Yet when they visit Eaton House The Manor Girls’ School they are often won over by the experience. This is because we offer an ‘optimal’ single sex education at our 1.5 acre site. It is optimal because boys and girls are
educated in separate schools by separate Heads but come together for important activities such as after-school clubs, drama and certain trips. Parents benefit from the ease of one drop-off and a co-ed nursery. The ‘one site two schools’ approach allows boys and girls to give their siblings and friends a wave in passing between classes or on Clapham Common. It works tremendously well, as in a friendly, family-orientated area like Clapham, boys and girls socialise after hours. One Eaton House The Manor girl who has benefitted from this system is Lottie, aged 10, who has two brothers in the Manor Prep, Tom, 13, and Oliver, 12. A handful of girls chose to join 15 boys to put on ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ for the school’s Shakespeare Project and Lottie really enjoyed herself, as she was cast as Hermia. Her brother Tom was also cast as a lead character. Another is Celia, 10, who is off to a boarding school with an active Model United Nations (MUN), who was happy to take part in after-school MUN with boys, especially as she is interested in the key debate topic of climate change. She enjoyed the camaraderie of the group and always felt treated as an equal. The team was evenly balanced, with around 5 girls to 3 boys. And Georgia, 7, went off to a Hilltop Adventure Camp. She has no brothers and was amused to discover that some of the girls were braver on the high ropes and better at archery. She made new friends and afterwards they had a reunion dinner. In my eyes, that’s a pretty good result.

Owlet Smart Sock Baby Monitor
I
Re vie w e d b y A N NA WO O L F
f you’re unlucky like me and you’ve suffered from anxiety during pregnancy, birth and beyond, Owlet could be the perfect product to ease any worries when caring for a newborn baby. The consumer device - which consists of a special ‘sock’ that perfectly fits your newborn’s foot, and access to the app and a glowing ‘base station’ which shines green when all is well - is any tech lover’s dream when it comes to monitoring your baby. According to the website, 96% of parents reported having reduced anxiety, leading to greater peace of mind and a better night sleep – which I can well believe. After the birth of my second daughter ended in a stay in the Special Care Baby Unit, I quickly became accustomed to the monitoring of her oxygen levels, and that’s exactly what the Owlet Smart Sock does; tracking the heart rate and oxygen levels whilst your baby sleeps. Some people may feel that this kind of monitoring is overkill. But, if you feel anxious or worried, this is exactly the kind of smart tech that unobtrusively brings peace of mind to caring for your little one. I loved the design of the sock (which stayed put on
a wriggly newborn foot!) and the base station provided the perfect visual clues that all was well with my baby. The Smart Sock connects via Bluetooth via the base station in the house. The base station then connects to the app on your phone via Wi-Fi. Once you’ve connected (it won’t work from tethering a phone unfortunately) the sock, base station and app are good to go, providing clear data updates about your baby’s wellbeing. Owlet really did make transitioning from my scary stay in the Special Care Baby Unit much less anxious and made newborn sleep feel safe and reassuring. It’s pricey but well worth it, particularly for any first time parents. £269, owletbabycare.co.uk
Charlie Crane Levo Baby Rocker

baby rocker is an essential accessory for any newborn to hang out in, and you won’t find a more stylish one than the Charlie Crane Levo rocker. It only took a quick 10 minutes to assemble and the fabric can be easily removed and machine-washed in case of any spills! I love the way it sits stylishly in our home, and is lightweight so it’s easy to move from room to room with baby in tow. The motion is designed to rock softly with your little one, making it a sure favourite relaxing spot! My newborn enjoys napping in her Levo rocker, the fabric is so soft it’s really comfy for her. And I can pop in and out of the room – safe in the knowledge that she is secured inside with the handy straps. From €199 charliecraneparis.com
