What are skin lesions?
A skin lesion is an abnormal area of skin which differs in appearance to surrounding skin, including moles, cysts, lipomas, birthmarks, blemishes, sun or age-related skin changes and skin tags. In the same way you visit the optician or dentist, regular skin checks are recommended. In this appointment skin lesions will be checked with a dermatoscope (a light source with a magnifying lens).
What are the surgical/non surgical options for skin lesions?
• Freeze treatment with cryotherapy and shave removal can be used for benign skin lesions
• Scars can occasionally be treated with steroid injections
• Surgical excision and biopsy is sometimes necessary for moles that have changed in appearance, lumps, bumps and skin cancers

August issue highlights
August is my favourite month in London. The streets empty in the absence of school run traffic, tables are available in restaurants at short notice, queues shrink. And of course, the sun is out, or at least we all behave as if it is. So it's a good time to focus on wellbeing, whether we are living our best lives on a beach in the Mediterranean or while walking on Hampstead Heath. In this issue we look at everything from Pilates for our backs to lotions for our skin, via simple ways of improving our mental health. Our healthcare special features experts on rhinoplasty and foot health, among other concerns, and anyone considering having treatment might learn from these pages. Enjoy August, wherever you spend it.

During the global pandemic Charlotte Rose exploded onto the pop art scene with her instantly recognisable paintings attracting over 430k Instagram followers. Not content with just being an internationally exhibited artist, Rose regularly models for the likes of Prada, Bulgari and Coach, quickly becoming one of fashion’s favourite new faces. Now, Rose displays a new exhibition of paintings and limited edition prints at Colony Room Green, a recreation of the Colony Room – Soho’s most notorious drinking den. The collection is an inspired look at our relentless consumerism. Rose uses her own position as an artist who at times has been at the centre of social media and tabloid storms, and a model for luxury brands, to paint a unique portrait of our lives as modern consumers.
One standout painting sees Rose paint her divided Instagram comments section on the iconic marmite jar design, from trolls ‘knock o Warhol, garbage!’ to her adoring fans ‘I’m too broke for her paintings but they fire’ and admirers ‘OMG the coolest artist out there!’.
The original artist-led Colony Room club boasted Francis Bacon as a founding member in 1948 and until it closed in 2008 had regulars including David Bowie and Kate Moss. Now, the culture-shifting club has been recreated by visual artist and original member Darren Co eld for the Daisy Green Collection. Colony Room Green can be found in the basement of David Bowie-inspired restaurant Ziggy Green on Heddon Street.
Since opening in 2022, over three million fans from across the world have seen Agnetha, Björn, Benny and Frida’s digital performance on stage at London’s ABBA Arena. This year marked the third anniversary of ABBA Voyage in London, and to celebrate, ABBA have added a little something to their concert with new tracks including Name of the Game and Money, Money, Money. Blending cutting-edge technology, spectacular lighting, and music from the pop group’s phenomenal 50-year career, ABBA takes to the stage in a whole new way. This really is a concert that “needs to be seen to be believed” (BBC). ABBA Voyage is a groundbreaking 100-minute spectacle.
The concert features digital versions of Agnetha, Björn, Benny, and Frida, recreated via motion-capture to appear as they did in their late-1970s prime. These digital versions perform iconic hits such as Dancing Queen, Mamma Mia, and Waterloo, accompanied by a live 10-piece band and dynamic lighting, lasers, and surround sound. Critics have praised the visuals as “jaw-dropping” and “brain-exploding,” with some saying they genuinely couldn’t tell what was real.
Housed in the ABBA Arena, ABBA Voyage is just one minute’s walk from Pudding Mill Lane station (served by the DLR) or can be reached via London Underground, London Overground and National Rail Services from Stratford and is just 20 minutes from central London.
What’s more, this summer, the ABBA Arena spills outdoors with a dedicated summer
experience – a celebration of long evenings, great music, and unforgettable memories. Every Friday and Saturday, get party ready with live DJ sets before the concert. Sip a refreshing mocktail or enjoy a glass of rosé at the outdoor bar, where guests can soak up the sun and enjoy light bites from the seasonal summer menu. All tickets o er a great view of the concert, so whether you’re looking to meet friends on the dance floor, take in the views from a seat, or party in a private dance booth, there’s something for everyone.
So if you are looking to make your first visit to the ABBA Arena – or you have already enjoyed the concert – this summer there are yet more reasons to take a trip to the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

Saatchi Yates’ summer exhibition is dedicated to our city
Saatchi Yates’ summer exhibition, ‘Once Upon a Time in London’ is a celebration of London, its artists and institutions, featuring commissioned works from contempo-rary artists as well as major loans drawing from the rich history, diversity and cultural scene of London.
For decades, London has been a major artistic crossroad where artists have challenged conventions and redefined the artistic landscape. The exhibition surveys how the city has evolved but remains a constant beating heart of groundbreaking art. Beginning after WWII, featuring

violent, psychologically twisted paintings from modern British masters Francis Bacon, Frank Auerbach and Lucian Freud to the golden years of the RCA where America's influence grows internationally, David Hockney paints a vision of Arizona as pop culture arrives on British shores. In more recent times, the exhibition explores London in the 90s with a generation of graduate artists who didn’t ask for permission, hosting exhibitions of cutting edge conceptual art in abandoned shops and London buildings, embodying the punk spirit of the city. Damien Hirst's medicine cabinets turn art into a science experiment, pain killers and anti depressants creating artificial emotional responses, or a portrait from Jenny Saville’s graduation show exploring the female figure from entirely new perspectives. More recently works by Lynette Yiadom Boakye brings a new viewpoint to the figurative painting tradition or even more recently Jade Fadoujitimi brings a new energy to abstract painting. Finally, the exhibition will explore the current community of London artists within this historic context. Artists such as Oli Epp and Benjamin Spiers create masterfully painted surreal portraits that delve deep into the human psyche in a post digital world, Slawn brings post-brexit Nigerian chutzpah to the London scene, rejecting the status quo, his dynamism and force of nature is undeniable. These are just a few of the artists who make up today’s thrilling London scene.

Virtual Beauty is an exhibition exploring the impact of digital technologies on definitions of beauty today. Taking an original approach to a key issue of our time, it raises questions around gender, sexuality, ethnicity and identity in the post-internet era, featuring compelling works from international artists working across sculpture, photography, installation and video.
From social media filters and artificial intelligence to biometrics and dating apps, these works by emerging and established artists examine how we are more self-aware and calculated than ever before in the way we present ourselves publicly. A new generation
has come of age having always lived in a world where digital self-curation is a part of their everyday lives. Crossing between the virtual and physical, the exhibition highlights how questions of beauty are inherent to the proliferation of portable devices and screens on which people look at themselves every day and share these altered, enhanced, or filtered identities with the world. These curated identities exist beyond the boundaries of traditional media and explore how individuals can reclaim and empower themselves. Virtual Beauty reconsiders who holds the power to define conventions of beauty today and the very definition of human identity. The exhibition interrogates the impact of technology beyond the digital realm to explore its influence on physical bodies. Pioneering works include ORLAN’s pre-social media performance Omniprésence (1993), in which
the artist live-streamed her facial aesthetic surgery to challenge western beauty ideals, and Amalia Ulman’s iconic series Excellences & Perfections, questioning the authenticity of social media platforms. Anan Fries further investigates the representation of the body through her work, challenging the social conventions around heteronormative pregnancy by reconsidering the womb as a fashionable and commercial bag in Ecto Bag (2024).
Virtual Beauty highlights the di erent technologies at play in shaping the digital landscape and its consequence on identity. Qualeasha Wood’s tapestries combine cybernetic and analogue processes that explore race, sexuality and gender as they relate to the black femme body, and Minnie Atairu o ers a critical approach to the portrayal of black identity and bias in images generated using
“WE ARE MORE SELF-AWARE AND CALCULATED THAN EVER BEFORE IN THE WAY WE PRESENT OURSELVES PUBLICLY”
data-trained AI-powered algorithms. Notions of identity are further explored by Korean artist Hyungkoo Lee in his distorted human portrait, a work challenging self-perception and responding to standardised definitions of beauty. The e ects of body dysmorphia and male beauty standards are investigated by Aleksander Nærbø through the lens of online dating culture, and Ben Cullen Williams and Isamaya Ffrench showcase work that uses machine learning and generative software to create altered portraits, raising questions about artificial intelligence’s perception of beauty.
The possibilities a orded by technology in constructing alternative identities beyond human boundaries are spotlighted within Ines Alpha’s interactive installation delving into the concept of ‘virtual makeup’ and cyborgs, and works by Harriet Davey and Angelfire explore the proliferation of alternative virtual identities in digital spaces through avatars. Andrew Thomas Huang’s series Björk Virtual Avatars (2016) returns to Somerset House after debuting for the 2016 show Björk Digital, presenting a series of other-worldly avatars of the singer. Virtual Beauty concludes with Frederik Heyman’s powerful Virtual Embalming (2018), prompting reflection on how individuals wish to be remembered in the digital realm after death, through three examples of virtual shrines.
Co-Curators Gonzalo Herrero Delicado, Mathilde Friis, Bunny Kinney said: “Virtual Beauty examines what ‘beauty’ means in the 21st century, and how technology and digital culture are shaping and changing this definition. We live in a world where digital selfcuration is part of everyday life. This exhibition highlights how questions of beauty are

intrinsically linked to the screens and devices through which we view ourselves every day, and the altered, enhanced, or filtered identities we share via these devices. It reconsiders who holds the power to define conventions of beauty today and questions the very definition of human identity.” Virtual Beauty explores how digital culture is reshaping our understanding of beauty and identity, o ering fresh perspective on an urgent subject. Participating artists include Sin Wai Kin, Somerset House Studios resident artist and Turner Prize nominee, who explores the power of storytelling, drag, and fantasy to reshape perceptions of identity in The Storyteller (2023), and Lil Miquela, viral virtual influencer and Time magazine’s “25 Most Influential People on the Internet,” who radically blurs the lines between real and artificial as she models for fashion brands and advocates for causes online. Arvida Byström critically examines how AI is used to replicate beauty standards and perpetuates the sexualisation of the female body in her mixed media installation A Daughter Without A Mother (2022). M.C. Abbott, María Buey González & Carl Olsson, whose work Peak Face (2021) uses Augmented Reality to question if we’re entering a “post-facial” era where identity is no longer rooted in the human face. Michael Wallinger is an Austrian media artist, whose Iterative Body Synthesis (2022) investigates digital platforms and self-perception through a monitoring interface for “sisi.spec” – a virtual identity developed on Instagram.

rief, memory, and surreal humour collide in Lost Watches, a new absurdist drama debuting at the Park Theatre. Written by emerging playwright Lorenzo Allchurch and directed by award-winning filmmaker Alex Helfrecht, the play features a voice performance by Jason Isaacs as a talking sculpture of Beat Generation icon William Burroughs. In this interview, Allchurch and Helfrecht discuss the creative process behind the production, the balance between pain and comedy, and the strange comfort of dust and ghosts.
Q The character of William Burroughs as a talking sculpture - voiced by White Lotus and Harry Potter's Jason Isaacs - is a unique and curious concept - where did that idea come from?
LORENZO: I’m a huge Burroughs fan. He’s such a malleable character when adapted – just look at the di erence between Cronenberg and Guadagnino’s portrayals of his work and personality. I wanted to write a play that included him, but I also wanted to avoid a kind of period aspect I feared might slip into pretentiousness or irrelevance.
My way around that and, I think to elevate and make the character more specific to this show, was to present him in sculpture form – almost like a relic of an older era. He is part teacher, part tormentor, part typical London flatmate who doesn’t do the dishes. This clearly isn’t a 1:1 representation of the
great man or his life. Rather, it is a young, Gen Z guy’s perception of what he might have been like: revolutionary, rash, witty, but also obnoxious, grouchy, and old.
I found the idea of the kind of people I might hang out with day-to-day spending their time in a spare room situation with one of the most enigmatic writers of all time ripe for drama and comedy alike. Then, of course, there’s the surreality of him being a (mostly) inanimate object. Just as Allen’s mother breathed first life into the Burroughs sculpture, Jason came along and added so much vivacity. It was an absolute joy working with him and his voice has all the eccentricities and power needed to do Mister Burroughs justice.
ALEX: Originally Lorenzo had conceived Burroughs as one of the projections that appear to the protagonist. There was originally one surreal visitor in each act; when we were developing and workshopping the play we felt that Burroughs deserved a larger presence in the play, and really had a di erent dramatic function than the projections of family members who appear to him (and are played by the same actor). He sat outside all of that as a commentator, as a contextualiser, as an antagonist and has the comic relief.
By this logic we felt he should inhabit the space di erently, sometimes he could be booming and godlike and at other times he could be a more intimate voice, that could indeed be in Allen’s own head. Lorenzo had the Beat Generation in the forefront of his mind and, felt a great a nity with
their poetry which filled his early drafts. Burroughs and Allen make a fun crossgenerational odd couple. Burroughs brings humanity, humour and a rebellious spirit to proceedings and who better than Jason Isaacs, who has incredible joie de vivre, chutzpah and never lacks an opinion?
I find him to be a fearless and brilliant actor, having worked with him couple of times including on my film A Winter’s Dream (currently in post-production) and he is gifted at doing voices. I thought it would bring real magic and gravitas to proceedings working with him, and attract audiences, including Gen Z. Even though he’s not physically on stage, he is very much present!
Q The surreal humour in the script cuts through the heaviness of griefwas that balance hard to strike?
ALEX: I think Lorenzo has achieved a good balance in the writing, and I ‘m excited to see how it plays. I think the play is very funny and also touching. It’s strange and esoteric but that gives it a sense of wonder and magic. Between the pain and the humour there is mystery and unknown, and I find the moments of ambiguity to be the most thought-provoking and refreshing.
LORENZO : Not particularly. I think in life humour always goes hand-in-hand with grief or sadness. Maybe we feel guilty about it but often it’s just a natural human reaction, a way for us to share grief. Plus, you wouldn’t really grieve something you didn’t have at least some positive relationship with. The happiness always lies just beneath. Fine-tuning how that is represented
“ w h o better thanjason isaacs, who neverlacks anopinion, to play w i lliam burroughs?”
dramatically versus how it manifests in life did take some tinkering of course, but I loved the workshopping process. Surprisingly, I think the play has turned out funnier than I originally intended, but I’m not complaining.
Q The dust motif recurs throughout the play. What does it represent?
LORENZO: The dust is literally the byproduct of the mother’s sculpting work. Like Burroughs, it is a physical reminder of her that the characters can interact with, remember her through. To a child, however, it also took on a magical quality which has stuck with Allen – something with great creative and imaginative potential. Like stardust, it is the falling remnants of something beautiful.
And, just as stardust is associated with time and great distance, the dust is also like the falling sand of an hourglass as Allen’s time is running out. Despite its beauty, dust is still dust, and it literally hangs over Allen and the shed, showing the clutter and stasis of his life.
ALEX: Ah, the dust. The dust is from the mother’s sculptures but it’s the stu the phantoms are made of. To me it’s rather Shakespearean. It makes Allen see what he needs to see. It is the stu of reckoning and the stu of the afterlife. After all as my 12 year old says, our DNA is essentially made from the dust of stars.
Q Alex, how are you approaching directing a character who spends most of the play alone, yet is surrounded by voices? Have you directed anything like this before?
ALEX: My current film has a lead actor who is in 14 out of 28 scenes on his own, and wordlessly, in continuous shots. I'm interested in the inner life of characters, often characters that are indeed lonely, or misfits or rebels. The challenge of this character is he is paralysed by his depression, and boredom and stasis are hard things to pull o . However Lorenzo is an immensely passionate and intelligent actor, I first worked with him when he was 13 - and I believe he wasn’t dull then and he won’t be dull now. Who cares about being likeable so long as you aren’t dull. We approach the character like any other and dig deep and try and reveal new things as we go along. I think with a lonely character whose mental health is in tatters you can be naturalistic and truthful but also - in certain parts of the play - unfettered and expressionistic. These two acting styles in the play will hopefully connect with the audience.
Q What would you like audiences to be left thinking about after the show?
LORENZO: “That wasn’t half-bad.” Seriously though, I’d hope to conjure a feeling of childish wonder and reflection and to ask people to examine the things in their life that are blocking this wonder, stopping their own freedom even in the tiniest ways.
ALEX: Life is for the living; we are all beautifully flawed and we have so little time. Tick tock tick tock.

A brilliant alternative to Prosecco, this crisp and vivid sparkling wine is made mainly from the garganega grape, sourced from vineyards in Soave in north-east Italy. Bright and citrusy, it bursts with lemon and lime zest, displaying ripe pear fruit on the palate. A refreshing finish makes this a lovely, easy-going aperitif. Sip away and imagine you're on the shores of Lake Garda. A refreshing Spanish white made from organic verdejo grapes, and a Rueda in all but name as the grapes come from very fine vineyards there.

There’s a small altercation going on at the reception desk as we arrive. Someone has been allocated a table that’s not to their liking, and they are not taking it well. The receptionist is standing her ground; the guest is very late for their booking and is lucky to be accommodated at all. The situation gives me insight into two things: firstly, how badly people sometimes behave in restaurants – and secondly, how highly coveted a table at The Ivy Asia is. Because even in this
unfashionably early midweek slot, the place is full.
We’re at the Mayfair site, and it’s like being inside a decorative lacquered box, in a fairytale. The floor lights up from underneath, almost like a lake covered in lily pads, and there’s cherry blossom everywhere.
A covered walkway feels like an entrance to a magical world; a large cherry tree spreads a canopy of blossom over one of several rooms; sta wear elaborate brocade jackets. It’s a maximalist’s dream, all lanterns, mirrors and Asian artefacts.

First o are spicy tuna sesame rolls and prawn tempura, both as good as we hoped, and then came gochujang glazed chicken with ka r lime mayo and standout pickled cucumber, which was spicy, sweet and tangy. We had to order the golden aromatic half duck, crispy fried, with pancakes, cucumber, spring onion and hoisin sauce – always a favourite. Kimchi fried rice was a large helping of satisfying umami, packed with edamame, while a cucumber, peanut and coriander salad was spicy and fresh. To finish, three small and perfect mochi balls were a treat: chocolate and hazelnut, yuzu and mango and passionfruit. Cold, chewy and just the right side of sweet: the perfect summer pudding.

Qdameh or leblebi are believed to have come to the Middle East, North Africa and parts of Europe from Iran around the 15th century.
Qdameh is a favourite Middle Eastern roasted chickpea snack, which is eaten as you would eat salted nuts. As kids, we used to be able to buy them wrapped in a paper cone and snack on them on the way back from school. Somehow, these scrumptious things have gone out of fashion and are slightly harder to find nowadays. You can serve the chickpeas on their own as a healthy snack. In a culinary twist, I sought to reimagine qdameh as deconstructed hummus, which is a simple yet elegant dish.
INGREDIENTS
• 2 x 400g tins of chickpeas, drained and rinsed
• 4 tbsp olive oil, plus more for drizzling
• 3/4 tsp smoked paprika
• 3/4 tsp Aleppo chilli flakes (or regular dried chilli flakes)
• 3/4 tsp sweet paprika
• 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
• Salt
• 2 tbsp lemon juice
• 30g fresh coriander, chopped, plus a few more leaves to garnish For the tahini sauce
• 150g tahini paste
• 120ml cold water
• 3 tbsp lemon juice
• 1 small garlic clove, crushed
• Salt
METHOD
1 Preheat the oven to 200°C fan.
2 Put the chickpeas into a medium bowl with the olive oil, spices and ¼ teaspoon of salt, and mix well. Spread the chickpea mixture on a lined baking dish and roast for 30 minutes, stirring a couple of times.
3 Remove from the oven, sprinkle over the lemon juice, mix and leave to cool.
4 Put the tahini paste into a small bowl, along with the water, lemon juice, garlic and teaspoon of salt. Use a spoon or a small whisk to mix the ingredients until they are completely combined and form a thick and pourable paste. Taste and adjust the seasoning by adding more lemon juice and salt. Place the tahini sauce and coriander in a free-standing blender or food processor and mix for a couple of minutes, until they form a smooth paste.
5 When ready to serve, spread the tahini sauce on a serving plate, pile the chickpeas in the middle and garnish with a few coriander leaves and a drizzle of olive oil.
Serves 4
I always keep a couple of tins of ful (fava beans) in my pantry for those times when I crave a quick and satisfying late breakfast or lunch. You can substitute the eggs with feta cheese for an extra creamy and salty touch. If fava beans aren’t available, you can easily substitute them with other tinned beans. Make sure to season the beans generously and serve them with fresh crusty bread or flatbread. This is a truly filling and satisfying meal that never fails to impress.
• 2 medium aubergines (around 630g)
• 80ml olive oil, plus extra to serve
• salt and black pepper
• 1 onion, finely chopped (175g)
• 6 garlic cloves, crushed
• 1 small piece of ginger, peeled and finely grated (20g)
• 1 green chilli, finely chopped and seeds (20g)
• 1 tsp chilli flakes
• 1 tsp ground cumin
• ½ tsp ground cinnamon
• 1½ tsp tomato paste
• 2 plum tomatoes, chopped into 2cm chunks (300g)
• 1 x 400g tin of chopped tomatoes
• 1 x 400g tin of fava beans, drained
• 300ml water
-
• 15g fresh coriander, roughly chopped, plus more to serve
• 4 large eggs
• 30g red onions
1 Preheat the oven to 220°C fan.
2 Cut the aubergines into 4cm chunks and place in a large bowl. Mix well with 40ml of the oil, ½ teaspoon of salt and a good grind of black pepper, then spread out on a large parchment-lined baking tray. Roast for about 25 minutes, or until completely softened and lightly browned. Remove from the oven and set aside.
3 While the aubergine is roasting, make the sauce. Put the remaining oil into a large sauté pan and place on a medium–high heat. Add the onion and cook for about 7 minutes, until softened and lightly browned. Add the garlic, ginger, green chilli, chilli flakes, spices and tomato paste and cook for another minute.
4 Add the chopped tomatoes, tinned tomatoes, fava beans, water, 1¼ teaspoons of salt and a good grind of pepper. Reduce the heat to medium and cook for 15 minutes, or until the sauce thickens.
5 Add the aubergine chunks and cook for a further 3 minutes. Stir in the coriander, then reduce the heat to medium–low. Make 4 wells in the sauce and crack an egg into each well. Use a fork to gently swirl the egg whites a little bit, taking care not to break the yolks.
6 Simmer gently for 7–8 minutes, until the egg whites are set but the yolks are still runny. You can cover the pan with a lid for the last few minutes (to speed up the process).
7 Leave to settle and cool for a couple of minutes, then garnish with the onions, coriander, a drizzle of olive oil and a little salt on the eggs.

Middle Eastern ma’akaroon have nothing to do with French Eastern ones are traditionally made from semolina, olive oil and aniseed and are deep-fried before being drenched in sugar syrup. Here is a slightly healthier way of making these buttery cookies, which are pretty easy to make. I like to make a big batch of these and gi them at Christmas.
• 125g pistachios, finely ground
• 125g ground almonds
• 100g caster sugar
• 1/2 tsp mastic, ground
• 1/4 tsp baking powder
• Salt
• 2 tsp finely chopped preserved lemon
• 1 tsp lemon zest
• 1 tsp vanilla bean paste
• 1 tbsp runny honey
• 1 egg, lightly whisked
• 15g unsalted butter, at room temperature
• 2–3 tbsp icing sugar, sifted
METHOD
1 Put the ground pistachios, ground almonds, sugar, mastic, baking powder and ⅛ teaspoon of salt into a large mixing bowl and mix well, just enough to combine everything together. Add the preserved lemon, lemon zest, vanilla, honey, egg and butter and give everything a good mix, using a wooden spoon or spatula. The mixture should be slightly sticky.
2 Place the icing sugar on a large plate and start rolling the batter into walnut-size balls, about 30g each. Gently roll the balls in the icing sugar, making sure that they are well coated on all sides.
3 Arrange on a large oven tray lined with baking parchment, evenly spaced out. Cover the tray and leave in the fridge for 30 minutes.
4 Preheat the oven to 175°C fan and bake the cookies for 10–12 minutes, or until they start to get a bit of colour. Leave them to cool completely before serving.
5 Once the cookies have been rolled, they can be kept in the freezer, in an airtight container, for a few weeks. When they are already baked, they will keep in an airtight container for 5 days.
“We wanted to be loud, brazen and push boundaries”
Josh Katz revolutionised the BBQ restaurant scene when launching Berber & Q a decade ago. He looks back at a flavour filled journey
This year marks a decade of flavourpacked feasting for Berber & Q, the trailblazing Haggerston restaurant founded by chef Josh Katz, renowned for its bold fusion of North African and Eastern Mediterranean flavours with the thrill of live-fire cooking inspired by American BBQ. Their industrial arch invites you to use all of your senses, boasting a laid-back, upbeat atmosphere. It’s undoubtedly one of Absolutely’s favourite spots, so we didn’t need a second invite to go and meet Josh and talk about a decade of BBQ beauties, the original idea and how they are marking the milestone.
Q Long before Berber & Q was a glint in your eye, when did you first get a taste for cooking?
A I started cooking as a teenager, really. Food was always a big part of my life growing up and it wasn’t long before I started cooking for myself, family and friends, mainly barbecues in the summer, but a little bit of everything in between.
Q What was your first job in a professional kitchen and how do you look back on it?
A Technically my first professional job in a kitchen was flipping burgers at a gourmet burger restaurant called Burgerman in Sydney, where I was studying at the time. Alas Burgerman is no more, but it was legendary in its day, long before gourmet burgers became a thing. In the UK, my first professional kitchen job was at Galvin Bistrot de Luxe on Baker
Street, which was a tough kitchen, but I learnt a lot about myself in the process.
Q You went on to work in some top establishments. Did you take something away from them all?
A Yes. Di erent things from all of them, some of them positive, some of them less so, but something none the less.
Q When did you first start thinking about launching Berber & Q?
A I had a lightbulb moment sitting in Fette Sau, one of my favourite BBQ restaurants in New York, when I was visiting in 2014. I felt there was an opportunity to take some of that BBQ culture that I loved so much and combine it with the ingredients and techniques I’d been using through my culinary career up to that point. Travel has always served as an enormous inspiration for me, particularly when it comes to food. I would say that I am one of those people who likes to see the world through the food culture of a particular country or city. All of our restaurants are inspired and influenced by travels overseas, be that to Morocco, Turkey, Israel, Lebanon, Greece and across other parts of the Mediterranean too.
Q Why was the Haggerston site perfect for you?
A It was the perfect blend of being slightly o the beaten track, hidden down a back street, but surrounded by lots of vibrant neighbourhoods and areas such as Dalston and Shoreditch. The site itself, an old railway arch with exposed bricks throughout, also had an aesthetic that lent itself perfectly to the kind of atmosphere and place we hoped to create, a den of iniquity of sorts.
Q Was it smooth sailing to open up?
A I’ve opened six restaurants now, for myself or for others. Not all of them have been smooth sailing and they haven’t gotten any easier the more we’ve done. You never really know how a launch will go as there are so many variables that can determine the outcome and it can be
di cult to control all of them. Berber & Q was one of our openings that just seemed to go well from the o . Everything seemed to just work, the planets aligned and, whilst it would be wrong to call it smooth sailing, it certainly felt less complicated than some of the others. The hardest part was managing the custom, because it got very busy, very quickly, and it was a real baptism of fire in that regard.
Q From day one, what did you want to o er?
A We wanted to o er something unique, something that felt di erent, that was unique to us and our individual and collective personalities. We wanted it to be loud, brazen and to push boundaries. But mostly, we wanted people to come,
eat good food and leave feeling fulfilled and that they’d had a good night out, regardless of what came before or after.
Q Have you evolved much over the last decade?
A I think invariably you evolve and change as you get older. Ten years is a long time, and so our concepts and o erings have also evolved as we have collectively grown older. We aren’t quite as young and wet behind the ears as we were ten years ago and I think this is reflected in what we do, since restaurants and food are ultimately an expression of personality.
Q We have obviously gone through plenty of tough times – and hospitality is still faced with lots of challenges – so how proud are you to make it to 10 years?
A Very proud. Restaurants have always been a di cult game and a tough industry, and the last ten years have coincided with some of the toughest times and challenges faced by hospitality in living memory, so just to make it this far feels like an achievement given everything that has been going on.
Q Over this time, what have been some of your favourite dishes to appear on the menu?
A It’s hard to look past our signature cauliflower shawarma, which was a dish that really put us on the map. But I also have always loved our slow-cooked lamb mechoui, inspired by our multiple trips to
Marrakech, which was the real starting point for the idea behind Berber & Q.
Q What can you tell us about the collaborative Sunday feasts that are marking the 10th anniversary?
A We’ve got a brilliant line-up of chefs of all di erent shapes, sizes and backgrounds. Past employees who have gone on to build their own careers, industry friends and supporters of our business, some with big profiles, others more up-and-coming but all equally as exciting, most of whom (but not all) with a connection to either cooking over fire or using the kind of ingredients familiar to us. It’s a great mix of talent and personalities and we’re very grateful they have agreed to be a part of the celebration. Ten collaborations to celebrate our ten years, cooking a Sunday roast with their own spin and recreating some of our signature dishes in their own style. It should be a lot of fun.
Q How do you see the future looking for Berber & Q?
A It feels like a precarious moment for the industry, so right now it’s hard to look too far into the future or to plan too far ahead. We’re focused on our tenth year for now, taking each day and month as it comes, and then we will reassess once we’re out the other side of these budget changes that are coming into play to see where we’re at come the end of it all.

I’ve long been fascinated by the mythical glow of Korean skincare. You know the one, glassy, poreless, borderline magical. So when I heard about a facial inspired by the full 10-step K- beauty routine, I booked in faster than you can say snail mucin. I was booked in with Claire-Rachel, who greeted me like an old friend. We started with a quick chat about my skin - what I’ve been using, how it’s been behaving, and what I was hoping to get out of the facial. Then she led me into one of the most inviting treatment rooms I’ve ever seen. Claire-Rachel started with a double cleanse: first, a rich oil to melt away the day, then a gel-based cleanser that left my skin weightless. She moved through each step with calm confidence, applying toners, essences, serums, and ampoules in seamless succession.
The extractions, never the most glamorous part of any facial, are handled swiftly and painlessly, barely a flinch. From there, hydration becomes the focus. A cooling mask envelops my face, while a faint trace of rose water sends me floating somewhere outside of time.
The standout moment is undoubtedly the Kobido facial massage. Drawing from traditional Japanese techniques, this isn’t the feather-light kind of facial stroking you might expect. It’s lifting, purposeful, and rhythmic; invigorating and deeply relaxing in equal measure. It gave my features a bit of a boost in under ten minutes. My skin is visibly plumper, radiant, and eventoned - the kind you usually only get after a week away from emails. There’s no redness, no tightness, no product overload, just a beautifully hydrated glow that lasts well beyond the day.
I felt glowy and restored. As I leave, I catch my reflection: I look well-rested, lifted, subtly luminous and dare I say, a touch Benjamin Buttoned. In a word: rejuvenated.

“The treatments will help you remain radiant throughout the summer”
Treatments you should consider to maintain your glow during summer
British summers can be great with temperatures rising and the sun shining longer giving us time to truly overcome our winter blues. But it also creates new challenges for your skin. Before anything, sunscreen is your best friend during this season. Fortunately, there are advanced, low-downtime treatments available at VIZAGE that truly help you remain radiant throughout the summer without disrupting your lifestyle at all. Here are the top skin treatments to consider this summer to maintain (and even enhance) your glow:
1. MICRONEEDLING WITH EXOSOMES: GLOW + REGENERATION
Microneedling already has a strong reputation for stimulating collagen, tightening skin, and improving texture. At VIZAGE, they take this powerful treatment a step further by combining it with exosomes, regenerative cellular messengers derived from stem cells. This next-gen combination not only enhances skin repair and boosts results, but also speeds up recovery. The microinjuries caused by the needles allow deeper delivery of exosomes, accelerating healing, reducing inflammation, and giving your skin a smooth, firm, and revitalised finish.
2. HIFU: THE NON-INVASIVE LIFT THAT WORKS BEHIND THE SCENES
High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) o ers a deep collagen boost by using focused ultrasound energy to lift and tighten the skin at a structural level without surgery or needles. It’s ideal for defining the jawline, tightening the neck, and lifting the brow. While results build over several weeks, HIFU requires no downtime, making it a discreet and practical treatment for busy summer schedules.
3. HYDROMAX: DEEP HYDRATION WITHOUT THE HEAVINESS
Surface-based moisturisers can only
go so far, especially when your skin feels dry. Hydromax is a skin booster that is designed to deeply hydrate and improve the texture of your skin without having an impact on the volume.
It’s packed with advanced hyaluronic acid and mannitol, a powerful antioxidant, specifically formulated to revitalise the skin. Therefore, Hydromax infuses the skin with lasting moisture, boosting elasticity and smoothens the natural radiance. Patients reported feeling ‘fresh’ after a Hydromax session and, unlike fillers, it doesn’t reshape your face. It’s a perfect treatment for patients seeking to feel fresh and glow during summer!
4. LED LIGHT THERAPY: YOUR SKIN’S CALM-DOWN BUTTON Gentle yet powerful, LED therapy uses specific wavelengths of light to calm inflammation, target bacteria, and stimulate collagen. Whether you’re battling postsun redness, the occasional breakout, or simply want to wind down your skin posttreatment, LED is a fast, e ective option.
At VIZAGE, they use medical-grade LED technology to complement your skin’s natural rhythm. It’s a favourite add-on for patients seeking to maintain healthy skin all summer long.

esistance training o ers a wide range of benefits for people of all ages and fitness levels. Here are eight reasons why incorporating resistance training into your fitness routine isbeneficial.
1. INCREASES MUSCLE STRENGTH & TONE
Regular resistance training enhances muscle strength, allowing for better performance in daily activities and athletic pursuits. It also improves muscle tone and definition, contributing to a more sculpted and toned appearance.
2. ENHANCES BONE DENSITY
Resistance training stimulates bone growth and increases bone density, which is crucial in preventing osteoporosis and reducing the risk of fractures, particularly as we age.
3. BOOSTS METABOLIC RATE
More muscle mass means a higher resting metabolic rate, which helps in burning more calories even at rest. Resistance training can lead to excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC), causing your body to burn more calories after the workout.
4. IMPROVES JOINT HEALTH
Strengthening the muscles around joints provides better support and stability, which can reduce the risk of injury and alleviate symptoms of arthritis.
5. ENHANCES MENTAL HEALTH
Exercise, including resistance training, can help reduce stress levels and improve overall mood. It has been shown to be e ective in combating symptoms of depression and anxiety by promoting the release of endorphins.
6. BOOSTS CARDIOVASCULAR HEALTH
Regular strength training can improve cardiovascular health by reducing blood pressure, improving blood lipid profiles, and enhancing blood flow.
7. IMPROVES FUNCTIONAL FITNESS
Resistance training enhances functional fitness, which is the ability to perform everyday activities with ease. This includes lifting, pushing, pulling, and other movements that are part of daily life.
8. SUPPORTS WEIGHT MANAGEMENT
By increasing muscle mass and boosting metabolic rate, resistance training helps with weight management and can be an e ective part of a weight loss or maintenance programme.
Eight reasons why everyone should take up resistance training
Why Pilates is so effective in relieving back pain CORE
“IT’S ABOUT RETRAINING THE BODY TO MOVE IN A WAY THAT SUPPORTS THE SPINE, RATHER THAN STRAINS IT”
Pilates is a really e ective way to support back pain not because it’s intense, but because it’s intentional, calming and strengthening.
The method prioritises control and stability over force or speed. When practiced correctly, it gives you the tools to move safely and confidently.
A big focus is core strength; and not just in the aesthetic ‘abs’ sense. We’re talking about deep core stability, breathwork, spinal mobility, and posture.
It’s not about crunches or planks, it’s about retraining the body to move in a way that supports the spine, rather than strains it.
Breath is a huge part of that. It’s often overlooked, but it plays a big role: it helps engage the deep core muscles, and it regulates the nervous system which can help reduce pain by relaxing the body and helping with muscle tension.
Pilates also strengthens the glutes and hips key parts in supporting the spine and reducing strain on the lower back. When those muscles are firing properly, the back doesn’t have to do all the work.
I often focus on glutes with lower back pain.
And importantly, Pilates builds postural awareness. It teaches you to notice how you’re moving throughout daily life; whether you’re picking up your child or a set of dumbbells, sitting at a desk, or walking to school drop o . It’s not a quick fix, but small, consistent sessions make a huge di erence. Consistency in how you move will do so much for your lower back pain.

Pilates is a physical fitness system developed in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates, a German physical trainer. Born in 1883, Pilates was a frail child who suffered from asthma and other ailments. Determined to overcome his physical limitations, he studied various forms of exercise, including yoga, martial arts, and classical Greek and Roman regimens.

During World War I, while interned in England as an enemy alien, Pilates began refining his exercise method. He worked with injured soldiers, using makeshi equipment—such as bed springs—to help rehabilitate them. These innovations laid the foundation for what later became Pilates apparatus, like the Reformer.
•
In 1926, Pilates emigrated to the United States, where he opened a studio in New York City with his wife Clara. Their method, originally called "Contrology," emphasized core strength, controlled movement, and breath. It gained popularity among dancers and athletes for its ability to build strength without bulk, improve posture, and enhance flexibility.
• Over time, Contrology became widely known as Pilates, honoring its creator. Today, it is practiced worldwide as both a rehabilitative technique and a full-body fitness regimen, appreciated for its mindful, low-impact approach to movement and health.
The truth about dark circles – and how to finally get rid of them
Renowned for his subtle artistry and precision, Dr Arun Karwal, founder of Karwal Aesthetics in Mayfair, has become one of London’s most trusted names in aesthetic medicine. Specialising in undereye rejuvenation, he’s helping clients across the capital achieve brighter, fresher, and more confident versions of themselves – all without surgery.
WAKE UP YOUR EYES AND RECLAIM YOUR CONFIDENCE
Dark circles. We all know them – and most of us have tried to cover them up. But concealer can only go so far. Whether caused by genetics, ageing, or lifestyle factors, dark undereye shadows can leave us looking drained and older than we feel – even on our best days.
At Karwal Aesthetics, Dr Arun Karwal takes a refreshingly honest and personalised approach. His philosophy? Treat the root cause – not just the symptom.
“I not only treat the problem, but enhance natural beauty in the process”
Most dark circles are the result of a combination of two key factors:
1. Volume Loss & Fat Herniation
As we age, the fat pads that support the undereye area begin to shift or shrink. This creates hollowness or pu ness, casting shadows and giving the illusion of darkness beneath the eyes.
2. Hyperpigmentation
Genetics, sun exposure, and inflammation can all increase melanin production under the eyes. The result? A darker tone that no amount of rest – or eye cream – can fix on its own.
THE MOST EFFECTIVE TREATMENTS – BACKED BY SCIENCE
Dr Karwal combines advanced techniques with artistic precision to create lasting, natural-looking results: Tear Trough Fillers: Using high-quality hyaluronic acid-based fillers, volume is carefully restored to the under-eye area and cheeks. This smooths out hollows, softens shadows, and gives a refreshed, wide-awake appearance. Results typically last 18-24 months – often longer.
Skin Boosters: Injectables such as Sunekos and Polynucleotides deliver deep hydration, improve elasticity, and reduce pigmentation –
leaving skin brighter, firmer, and more radiant. Prescription-Grade Skincare: When pigmentation is the main issue, Dr Karwal may recommend targeted topical treatments to lighten the area safely and gradually over time.
WHY CLIENTS TRUST
KARWAL AESTHETICS
At the heart of Dr Karwal’s practice is a simple but powerful belief: no two faces are the same. His consultations are in-depth, thoughtful, and always tailored to the individual.
“Dark circles aren’t just one issue,” he explains. “They’re a combination of structural and pigment-related concerns. My job is to analyse each patient’s anatomy and lifestyle, then build a plan that not only treats the problem – but enhances their natural beauty in the process.”
Discreet, elegant, and incredibly e ective, Karwal Aesthetics o ers a new standard in aesthetic care – right in the heart of Mayfair. Look fresher. Feel brighter. Step into your most confident self. Book your private consultation today via phone or website.

Whether motivated by cosmetic preferences or to address breathing issues, rhinoplasty is a highly personalised procedure. If you are considering this surgery, understanding what to expect before, during, and after is crucial. And finding the right surgeon is an important starting point.
Amir Sadri undertook his medical studies at The University of Liverpool. He trained with some of the UK’s top surgeons, passed the Plastic Surgery Specialist Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in 2017, and entered the GMC Specialist Register for Plastic Surgery in 2019. He is widely published with over 40 peer-reviewed papers on an extensive range of plastic and reconstructive surgery and has presented work internationally in Europe and the USA. Mr Sadri also specialises in cleft, lip and palette surgery and performs cleft rhinoplastys, the most challenging of all rhinoplasty, at Great Ormond Street hospital. This sets him apart, and he believes that his NHS work keeps him grounded and complements his private practice. He performs a high number of rhinoplasties
compared to other surgeons, and he is listed in Tatler's prestigious Address Book.
Before undergoing rhinoplasty, a consultation is essential. Having a clear understanding of the procedure, risks, and benefits at this stage can help reduce anxiety and prepare you mentally.
Rhinoplasty is performed under general anesthesia and there are two primary techniques used: Open Rhinoplasty, in which an incision is made across the columella (the skin between the nostrils), allowing more precise access for significant reshaping, or Closed Rhinoplasty, in which all incisions are made within the nostrils, which minimises scarring and is suitable for less extensive adjustments.
During the surgery, Mr Sadri may reshape the nasal bones and cartilage, address breathing issues, or adjust the overall structure of the nose for improved aesthetics and function.
Rhinoplasty can be life-changing, improving confidence and quality of life. By understanding the process before, during, and after surgery, you can approach it with confidence and realistic expectations.

“I went to Mr Amir Sadri for my rhinoplasty and I am delighted with my results, I can fi nally breathe properly for the fi rst time ever! I had a closed rhinoplasty and genuinely could not be happier with the result. The whole process was so easy, and the recovery was better than I expected. He was clear and realistic about my result and I feel that he really listened to me when I shared with him what I wanted. He took the time to explain the process of the surgery and explained what a deviated septum was. He also explained the recovery process in detail so I had no nasty surprises. I had always been selfconscious about my appearance and now I feel confident. This surgery has really been a life changing event for me. Thank you Mr Sadri.” from patient Roxy
I had septorhinoplasty with Dr Amir Sadri and I honestly couldn’t be happier with the whole experience. This is something I’ve been wanting for 15 years, and it exceeded all my expectations. Everything from the fi rst consultation to the pre- and post-op nursing care was faultless. Dr Sadri was incredible, so clear, kind, and thorough with all the a ercare and explaining exactly what to expect. He even showed me photos and videos straight a er surgery, which really put my mind at ease and gave me so much confidence throughout the healing process. I didn’t feel any anxiety at all (which is surprising for me) because I felt so well-informed and supported every step of the way. It also made a huge difference knowing his manager, Lucy, was always available and so approachable, which was such a comfort. I would recommend Dr Sadri without hesitation to absolutely anyone. His skill, care, and communication made all the difference. Thank you all so much!” from patient Celia

The night before she was to undergo major heart surgery — which several other doctors had told her she wouldn’t survive — Mary was admittedly worried. So, she shared her fears with the surgeon who would later perform the life-saving operation, Professor Olaf Wendler, Consultant Cardiac Surgeon and Chair of Cleveland Clinic London’s Heart, Vascular & Thoracic Institute.
For several years, Mary had su ered from and been treated for various heart ailments. After a previous aortic valve replacement, an aneurysm had resulted in serious complications, including an infection that required partial removal of her breastbone. Over the few years after her surgery, the valve prosthesis degenerated and narrowed, resulting in symptoms of severe shortness of breath.
Mary knew it was time to listen to her body. What she didn’t realise at the time was that her path would
soon lead to open-heart surgery.
When Professor Wendler first examined her in June 2022, he understood the concern other surgeons had expressed to Mary. “Because part of her breastbone was missing, a crater had formed across the sternum, and the aortic graft. That’s a problem, because when you open the chest in that condition, you have a serious risk of damaging the aorta, which can be fatal.”
However, what Professor Wendler couldn’t understand was how often Mary had been told nothing could be done for her. “I believe we need to be very cautious of telling patients how long they have to live or that recovery isn’t possible. Sometimes it’s just a question of finding the right surgeon and hospital where a di cult surgery can be performed.”
Still, Professor Wendler didn’t agree to the operation right away. Mary had some work to do first. Her heart condition, and the risk of the surgery, was compounded by two factors Mary had to address: she would need to lose weight and stop smoking.
And that’s exactly what she did. By
“The future has never looked brighter”
improving her diet and kicking her longtime smoking habit, she was able to reach those goals over several months, making her o cially ready for surgery.
Mary’s 10-hour operation was a huge success. Professor Wendler was able to implant a heart valve two sizes up from the first operation and was pleasantly surprised that despite the problem with Mary’s breastbone, “we had no problems at all.”
Just six days later, accompanied by her daughter and sister, Mary was back strolling through London’s Hyde Park again — a bit of exercise that would have been impossible to undertake had Professor Wendler not succeeded in replacing a faulty heart valve.
“Everyone was so kind and respectful,” says Mary. “And Professor Wendler explained everything to me in plain English, with kindness. He talked to me. He never once talked down to me. That made quite a di erence for me.”
Thanks to Cleveland Clinic’s cardiovascular innovations and patientfirst support, Mary is a living example of how Cleveland Clinic London is advancing the future of heart care — one patient, one heart and one story at a time. clevelandcliniclondon.uk

20 ways to feel less busy and more in flow...
SAY NO WITH LOVE Protect your peace by saying no to anything that feels like a “should” rather than a soul-led yes.
MONO-TASK Give one thing your full attention. It’s more e ective, less stressful, and helps you feel accomplished rather than overwhelmed.
CREATE SPACIOUS MORNINGS Start your day without immediately grabbing your phone. A few quiet minutes for intention-setting can reset your nervous system.
USE BREATHWORK TO ANCHOR YOUR ENERGY A few deep breaths between tasks helps you shift out of stress and back into alignment.
WORK WITH YOUR NATURAL RHYTHMS Notice when you feel most focused or tired and plan your day accordingly. Honour your cycles, don’t fight them. TIME BLOCK WITH INTENTION Group similar tasks together and leave white space for rest or overflow. This protects your energy and gives you room to breathe.
USE A POWER HOUR Set a 60-minute timer, turn o distractions, and focus fully on one task or project. You’ll be amazed at what you can get done.
MAKE SPACE TO EITHER CLEAR THE DECKS OR MAKE BOLD MOVES Don’t do both on the same day. Pick one: either tie up loose ends or take inspired action. Honour your capacity.
ENERGETICALLY CLOSE YOUR DAY Light a candle, stretch, or take a few deep breaths to symbolically end the workday and step back into your life.
GROUND YOURSELF DAILY Even two minutes barefoot on the grass or visualising roots from your feet can reconnect and calm your nervous system.
PRIORITISE ALIGNMENT OVER PRODUCTIVITY Check in: are you busy or just avoiding the big thing that actually matters?
CLEAR SURFACE-LEVEL NOISE Notice where you’re busy with distractions (scrolling, overbooking, people-pleasing) and gently step away from it.
WALK WITHOUT YOUR PHONE Reclaim your thoughts and creative space by walking without distractions. Let your mind wander in peace.
CREATE A “DONE” LIST Celebrate what you’ve achieved each day, even if it’s small. It shifts you from lack to gratitude.
PROTECT YOUR CALENDAR LIKE A BOUNDARY Block time for you first. Work, family, and others can fit around that.
TURN “BUSY” INTO “INTENTIONAL” Instead of “I’m so busy,” try “I’m choosing where my energy goes.” This reframes and empowers.
VISUALISE YOUR IDEAL WEEK Get clear on what balance and spaciousness really look like for you, then work backwards to build it in.
USE EFT TO RELEASE PRESSURE Tap through the “I have too much to do” feeling and create more ease in your body and mind.
By JO IRVING Holistic empowerment and transformation coach
CHECK IN WITH YOUR BODY Pause and ask: “What do I need right now?” Your body always knows what will bring you back to balance.
REMEMBER: REST IS PRODUCTIVE Pausing isn’t lazy, it’s powerful. You can’t pour from an empty cup, so top yourself up often. joirving.com
Absolutely quizzes patient Jayne on her life-changing experience with Mr David Gordon, a Consultant Foot & Ankle Surgeon and a world expert in keyhole bunion surgery
Q When did you develop bunions?
A For as long as I can remember, I’ve had bunions. People often commented on my wide feet and protruding bones, assuming I’d spent years in stilettos. The truth is, I rarely wore high heels – I’ve always valued healthy feet! My bunions are hereditary, and I’ve had them since childhood.
Q Why did you decide to opt for surgery?
A I had my left foot operated on by a di erent surgeon using traditional ‘open’ surgery because the bunion kept getting worse. Unfortunately, the results weren’t great – the bump was still noticeable even post-surgery. Thirty years later, my right foot had caught up. It ached after long days, and I found that my activities such as power-walking and dancing were restricted as the bunion would start to throb. I knew I had to do something. This time, I did my homework. I looked into modern options like keyhole (minimally invasive) surgery and decided I wanted a surgeon who o ered this technique.
Q Why did you choose Mr Gordon and keyhole surgery?
A Mr Gordon was the perfect fit for me as he specialises in keyhole bunion surgery, and is one of the most experienced surgeons in this approach in the world. Interestingly, he also uses a screw during the procedure for stability during the healing process and to
maintain long-term correction so my bunions would have less chance of returning and this was an important consideration for me.
The keyhole technique meant less tissue damage and less risk of infection, minimal scarring and a faster recovery than the open surgery technique. He also agreed to fix my left foot with keyhole surgery, correcting what hadn’t been done properly thirty years ago.
Q What was the process like?
A Exactly as I expected. You are given an anaesthetic ankle block and then your choice of a mild or deeper sedation which, based on the level, allows you to stay awake, semi-awake, or fully asleep during the procedure. I chose to be completely out – personal preference! Mr Gordon and his anaesthetist explained all my options beforehand so I had time to decide. They were very approachable and made me feel very much at ease by checking that I was comfortable with everything throughout.
Q And what was the recovery like?
A After surgery, I wore the post operative sandals I was given, to protect my feet. I used crutches initially for stability, as I had bunions on both feet corrected at the same time, but this was a matter of preference. The keyhole procedure means you can be fully weight bearing almost immediately after surgery, walking independently and without crutches as soon as you leave hospital.
In the initial stages, elevation of the feet was essential and keeping the wound dry. Rehabilitation involved changing of bandages and following a step-by-step toe and foot exercise plan provided by Mr Gordon. The key was following the guidance and taking it day by day. I also took a Vitamin D supplement during my recovery to support the bone healing process. Most importantly though, I had very little, if any pain during my recovery and only took the painkillers I was prescribed as a precaution, for a few days after surgery.
Q How pleased are you with the results?
A Amazing results! Both feet are now straight and pain-free and I no longer feel like I need to hide them. Buying shoes is no longer a struggle as my feet are now symmetrical, on top of which I can actually pick shoes I like! No more bumps, no more throbbing after a long day! I can also enjoy my powerwalks and dancing pain-free. The surgery was a game-changer. I now have the feet I always wanted. I guess you could call it a fitting outcome! I wish I had had the surgery done years ago to benefit from those earlier years of my life, as I now realise that happy feet give you the freedom and joy to live your life to the full.

Choosing paint colours can be one of the most deceptively complex parts of designing or refreshing a space. A single colour can drastically alter how a room feels, and with the thousands of shades available, making the right decision can quickly become overwhelming. Yet with the right approach, choosing paint colours becomes not just manageable, but rewarding. It’s about understanding the purpose of the space, recognising how light a ects colour, exploring personal taste, and learning to test and trust your instincts.
The first and most essential step in choosing paint colours is considering the function of the room. Di erent spaces call for di erent moods, and paint can reinforce or disrupt the emotional tone you want to create. A bedroom is a place of rest and relaxation, so softer hues like gentle greys, calming blues, and muted pastels tend to be most e ective. On the other hand, living rooms are typically used for entertaining and relaxation, so colours
that evoke warmth, such as soft earth tones, warm whites, or even deep greens, can make these areas feel welcoming. Kitchens and bathrooms, which are more functional and energetic, can benefit from lighter, brighter colours that create a sense of cleanliness and vitality. Understanding the role of each room helps narrow down the palette to colours that will support both function and feeling. Light – both natural and artificial – plays a significant role in how a colour is perceived. This is often underestimated, yet it can completely change how a paint colour looks once it’s on the wall. Natural light varies by time of day and direction. A room with north-facing windows tends to have cooler, more muted light, which can make colours appear slightly greyer or bluer. South-facing rooms benefit from warm, full sunlight that tends to intensify and warm up colours. East-facing rooms are bright in the morning and cooler in the afternoon, while west-facing rooms have the opposite pattern. Artificial light also alters colour. Warm incandescent bulbs will enhance reds, oranges, and yellows,
while cooler LED or fluorescent lights might mute those same colours or bring out blue undertones. This means that the same shade can look completely di erent depending on lighting conditions, so it’s important to test paint samples in the actual room and observe them at di erent times of the day. Personal preference and inspiration play a huge role in narrowing down your choices. Start by looking at items you love – a favourite piece of art, a rug, or even your wardrobe – and note the colours that consistently draw your attention. If you gravitate toward soft, beachy tones or deep, moody hues, let that guide your choices. Rather than chasing trends, build your palette around colours that resonate with you emotionally and aesthetically.
Once you have a general idea of what colours appeal to you, basic knowledge of colour theory can be helpful. While you don’t need to memorise the entire colour wheel, understanding a few key relationships makes the process easier. Colours opposite each other on the wheel, like blue and orange or yellow and purple, are called complementary
“RATHER THAN CHASING TRENDS, BUILD YOUR PALETTE AROUND COLOURS THAT RESONATE WITH YOU EMOTIONALLY AND AESTHETICALLY”
and create high contrast and drama. Colours adjacent to each other, such as blue and green or red and orange, are analogous and feel more harmonious. You can also use a monochromatic approach, sticking with one hue and varying its lightness and saturation to add depth. These relationships help you develop a coherent palette that maintains interest without becoming chaotic. Testing is arguably the most crucial part of choosing a paint colour. It’s tempting to pick a shade from a swatch and jump right in, but paint looks di erent on walls than it does on paper or a screen. Apply test colours to several parts of the wall and observe them over a few days under various lighting conditions. Paint reacts to surrounding elements too, so be mindful of flooring, furniture, and even ceiling colour. This testing phase gives you a chance to see how a colour behaves in your space before you commit.
Paint colours don’t exist in isolation, so it’s also important to think about flow – how the colours in di erent rooms connect. Even if
each room has a distinct purpose and personality, there should be a visual transition that feels cohesive. One strategy is to use di erent tones of the same colour family throughout your home, which maintains harmony while allowing for variation. Another is to keep a consistent undertone across your palette, whether that’s warm, cool, or neutral.
When choosing a colour, don’t overlook the finish, or sheen, of the paint. The same colour can appear di erently in a matte finish versus a gloss. Flat or matte finishes o er a velvety look that hides wall imperfections, ideal for low-tra c areas. Eggshell has a subtle glow and is more durable, making it suitable for living spaces. Satin works well in kitchens or bathrooms where surfaces need to be cleaned frequently, while semigloss or gloss is typically used for trim and
cabinetry. The right finish enhances both the appearance and functionality of the paint. Finally, trust your instincts. The process of choosing paint colours involves research, experimentation, and self-reflection, but it ultimately comes down to how a colour makes you feel. Don’t be afraid to take a risk on a bold shade if it excites you, or stick with a classic neutral if it brings peace of mind. A good paint colour doesn’t just look good – it feels right and supports the way you live.
Mandarin Stone: beautiful interiors with natural stone and porcelain
hen it comes to creating timeless, elegant interiors, the surfaces you choose play a defining role. From kitchen floors to bathroom walls, tiles are no longer a purely functional detail, they are a key element of your home’s design narrative.
Established over 35 years ago, Mandarin Stone has become one of the UK’s leading suppliers of natural stone, porcelain, and decorative tiles, with a reputation for quality, style and innovation. With 16 showrooms across the UK, including beautifully designed spaces on Fulham Road and Primrose Hill, the brand has become a go-to resource for homeowners, interior designers and architects alike.

Natural stone remains a core part of their identity. Each is unique, o ering an organic texture and warmth that cannot be replicated. Their limestones and marbles come in a variety of finishes – from honed and polished to

tumbled and brushed – allowing for both rustic and refined interiors. Stone’s durability also makes it a long-term investment, adding value to your space as it ages gracefully over time.
The porcelain tile range includes hyperrealistic stone and wood-e ect tiles as well as bold, modern designs that bring colour and pattern into the home. Porcelain is favoured not only for its beauty, but also for its practicality – it’s low-maintenance, hardwearing, and ideal for underfloor heating systems.

Their porcelain tiles are manufactured with low water usage and energy-e cient processes, and their natural stones are sourced with care to minimise environmental impact.
Ultimately, Mandarin Stone o ers more than just tiles, they o er a foundation for exceptional design. mandarinstone.com
A marriage of artistry and everyday ritual – a look at EmmaKohlmann’s new collection for Hay
American artist EmmaKohlmann, celebrated for her playful, fluid line work inspired by folk motifs and historical art, has debuted LaPittura, a wholly hand-painted ceramic tableware series for Danish design house Hay. Kohlmann, originally from New York City and now based in Massachusetts, brings a unique visual voice to domestic design, blending spontaneity with enduring craftsmanship .
The title LaPittura – Italian for “the painting” – reflects Kohlmann’s intent to treat everyday objects as canvases. The collection includes plates, bowls, cups, trivets, jugs, vases, and
serving platters – each adorned with her signature motifs: abstracted figures, symbolic forms, amorphous shapes, and a naïve yet poetic sensibility reminiscent of Renaissance apothecary jars, Tuscan earthenware, and childhood museum visits. The pieces are not only functional but are “expressive fields”, as Kohlmann and Hay’s co-founder, Mette Hay, highlight, framing domestic rituals as intimate artistic exchanges.
HAND-MADE QUALITIES AND IMPERFECTIONS
Produced in Sri Lanka and hand-painted from start to finish, each item in the LaPittura collection bears subtle irregularities: tonal shifts, line variances, and slight asymmetry. These imperfections are not flaws, but rather the heart of the collection, “there’s nothing perfect about it – because it’s made by people,” Kohlmann notes. This deliberate embrace of the handcrafted celebrates the humanity of making, standing in contrast to uniform, mass-produced wares.
Hay’s approach with LaPittura exemplifies a long-standing commitment to merging utility with art. The collection occupies a liminal space – neither solely decorative nor fine art – but functional design intended to be used daily: from kitchen prep to dining table, shelf display, or as vessels in their own right. Mette Hay puts it plainly: “Serving food in a beautiful bowl or on a hand-painted plate – it just changes the experience.”
LaPittura launched as an exclusive preview at HAY’s flagship Copenhagen showroom during the city’s prestigious 3 Days ofDesign festival earlier this year. A curated selection of 19 ceramic pieces was available in-store ahead of the global launch scheduled for mid-August. HAY paired the debut with a pop-up restaurant on-site, serving casual Italian fare on the newly unveiled hand-painted ceramics – blending design immersion with real-world use.
“SERVING FOOD IN A BEAUTIFUL BOWL OR ON A HAND-PAINTED PLATE — IT JUST CHANGES THE EXPERIENCE”
This collaboration continues Hay’s tradition of working with artists to inject fresh perspectives into everyday objects. For Kohlmann, it’s a landmark project – three years in the making – transforming studio artworks into shared objects of daily life. For Hay, it reinforces their ethos of enriching routines through design that feels personal, intimate, and human.
EmmaKohlmann’s LaPittura for Hay succeeds in reimagining the ceramic tableware tradition through a contemporary, hand-painted lens. Each piece acts as a storyteller – rooted in culture and memory, yet boldly alive in the present. The result is a collection that is as functional as it is poetic, a testament to the synergy between art and everyday life – fittingly unveiled during Copenhagen’s most creative design week.

Rugs are more than mere textiles. They become striking focal points that e ortlessly harmonise a room and transform it into a sanctuary of comfort. Discover how, with their rich colours, tactile textures, and sculptural forms, rugs hold the extraordinary power to redefine a room’s ambience, infusing your surroundings with a distinct character.
WHY SHOULD YOU HAVE CARPETS AT HOME?
Rugs have a distinct capacity to bring a touch of refinement to the home. Providing a luxurious and welcoming surface, they gently reduce noise and improve acoustics. They frequently act as a cohesive element, e ortlessly integrating into the overall interior design while elevating the comfort and elegance of any environment.
HOW CAN A RUG CHANGE THE MOOD OF A HOME?
A rug transcends being just a textile piece – it’s a foundational piece of furniture that shapes the very essence of a room. The moment your fingers brush its surface, it evokes an emotional response akin to the warmth of a human touch. It doesn’t
merely occupy room; it radiates warmth and subtly elevates the ambience, engaging you through its rich texture and unique design.
HOW CAN I CHOOSE THE PERFECT RUG?
When selecting a rug, several key factors must be considered. These include the size of your home, the amount of furniture, the specific room where the rug will be placed, and the desired aesthetic e ect. If you have the room available, embrace the opportunity to select a large, bold, or expressive piece. A rug, like any crucial piece of furniture, serves to unify your space. It creates cohesion and enhances the existing elements, contributing to a well-integrated and harmonious environment. Moreover, consider the expression you wish to achieve. Select textures and colours to complement the setting where the piece will be placed.
In large rooms, choose a bold and whimsical piece to create a captivating focal point. Such an item will not only draw the eye, but also imbue your home with unique character and charm. In smaller spaces, consider selecting a rug that e ectively frames the area. For bedrooms, small runners can enhance the room’s layout and add texture. In compact kitchens, our Kelim or Athens runners are excellent choices due to their easy maintenance and practical design.
Rugs are pivotal in shaping the ambience of a home, profoundly elevating its aesthetic and comfort through their addition of warmth and texture.
WHICH DIFFERENT FORMS ARE AVAILABLE?
We o er a diverse selection of rugs in various shapes to suit di erent room layouts. Choosing the right form can enhance the functionality and aesthetic of your home, whether you’re aiming to create a sense of cohesion, define specific areas, or complement your existing decor. Rectangular rugs introduce proportion and balance, adding structure and symmetry to a space. They ideally complement other rectangular furniture pieces like our Catena Sofa, aligning e ortlessly with its lines and accentuating its squared profile. This synergy results in a harmonious and well-defined aesthetic. Round rugs accentuate circular shapes and pair beautifully with round tables and curvaceous furniture like our Rico series.
The Stille rug, in particular, exquisitely complements rounded forms, aligning with their contours to create a balance between the rug and the floor it adorns.
Our organic-shaped rugs are ideal for pairing with furniture that mirrors their contours, creating a visually engaging unity. These pieces are especially wellsuited for placement in the living room beneath smaller co ee tables or in any area where their graceful forms foster a well-balanced and welcoming ambience.
When selecting a rug for a room, it’s common to think it should be large enough to fit all the furniture within its borders. However, this is not an absolute requirement. A rug doesn’t necessarily need to extend under every piece of furniture.
The primary focus should be on comfort and practicality. A good rule of thumb is to ensure that wherever you’re
seated, your feet should land on the rug. This guarantees that the rug fulfils its purpose – o ering a soft, cosy surface underfoot, while also helping to define the area visually.
For instance, in a living room, you might place a rug under the front legs of your sofa and chairs. As long as your feet rest on the rug when you’re seated, the arrangement will feel balanced and comfortable. This strategy allows you to use a smaller rug that unifies the room.
Choosing the ideal rug material depends on its intended placement within your home and your specific lifestyle needs. Consider key factors such as durability, visual appeal, and ease of maintenance to select the perfect material for your place. Ferm Living o ers a diverse selection of rugs crafted from various materials to suit di erent environments and preferences. Our jute rugs bring a distinctive character and exceptional tactile quality to your space.
Their low-maintenance nature makes them perfect for high-tra c areas like kitchens and dining rooms. The natural texture of jute complements various surfaces, including stone, marble, and wood.
Wool rugs are renowned for their durability. Their natural oils make them self-cleaning, repelling spills and dirt and enhancing stain resistance. Additionally, wool rugs improve air quality by trapping fine dust particles, making them an excellent choice for living rooms and bedrooms.
Kelim rugs o er a blend of versatility and timeless design. Made from natural woolcotton yarn, they feature a unique, tactile texture that adds depth and character to any room. Easy to maintain with simple vacuuming, Kelim rugs are practical and durable, making them ideal for children’s rooms.
When selecting the ideal rug colour for your space, consider these guidelines to maximise the impact of your choice. To add depth and dimension, employ contrast by combining light
and dark hues. This e ect can be achieved by either placing two di erently coloured rugs side by side or by choosing a single rug that incorporates both light and dark tones. Alternatively, you might opt for a rug in a muted colour and place a lighter element, such as a co ee table, on top to introduce visual interest. If your surroundings feature a neutral colour scheme, consider introducing rugs in bold, artistic hues. This approach will enliven and elevate your environment.

Who says summer styling should stop at the garden? Cult
Furniture’s latest campaign, Summer is Served, makes a strong case for investing in the spaces we live in year-round with colour, character, and considered design leading the way.
Known for blending bold, high-end design with accessible price points, Cult’s collection captures the spirit of modern London homes: eclectic, expressive, and made to evolve with the people who live in them. And while their outdoor range might have already sold out, indoors is where the real story is unfolding.
From dining tables that demand attention to sculptural accent chairs and thoughtfully designed lighting, Summer is Served champions pieces that work
hard without sacrificing style. There’s a sense of ease throughout the collection, soft curves, sumptuous textures, and a palette that moves confidently between retro warmth and contemporary calm.
Cult’s furniture doesn’t just fill a room, it shapes it. The dining collection blurs the lines between traditional formality and elevated everyday hosting, whether that’s a Sunday supper with friends or an impromptu pizza night around a table, statement marble anchors the room with the Toulouse, paired with tactile boucle seating in standout styles like the Halston or Hallie, or sleek chromeframed chairs, like the Kenton.
Living spaces are just as considered. There’s a real emphasis on materials that invite touch: walnut woods, velvet cushions, matte ceramics, and smoked glass. Accent chairs like the Erin in bold monochrome or the curved Ivy in olive, add design punctuation, while modular
co ee tables and playful accessories create a layered, lived-in feel.
Lighting, often the unsung hero of interiors, plays a starring role, with Cult’s latest pieces designed to shift the mood from morning co ee to evening unwind with the flick of a switch.
And the accessories? They’re anything but afterthoughts: sculptural vases, curved mirrors, and plush rugs that seamlessly add character.
With its confident mix of style and substance, Cult’s Summer is Served campaign reminds us that interiors should be fun, functional, and full of personality. It’s not about rules, it’s about creating a space that feels entirely your own.
The Summer is Served sale runs until 31st August at cultfurniture.com or find even more savings at their showroom 811-813 Wandsworth Road, London, SW4 3JH, o ering up to 60% o selected indoor designs
In a home, it’s often the quietest details that speak loudest. A curve in a cornice, the ripple of natural light on a wall or the pleasing weight of a door that closes just so. For residents of Kensington and Chelsea, where taste tends to favour understatement over show, design is as much about feel as it is about form.
It’s in this spirit that Crittall Windows’ latest evolution in steel windows and doors arrives. Known for its iconic slim profiles and architectural precision, the heritage manufacturer famous for its jet black frames now o ers an expanded range of finishes that bring texture, tone and tactility to the fore. These new powder-coated collections include ultra-matte colours, natural metallics and shimmering mineral tones that transform steel from structural element into sensory experience.
Bronze, brass, iron and nickel finishes o er a richness and depth that interact with light in quietly compelling ways. Whether reflecting the warmth of a south-facing garden or bringing definition to a softly lit
hallway, these finishes catch the eye without clamouring for it. For interiors where natural daylight is cherished, the interplay of gloss, grain and gleam adds a subtle sense of movement and a quiet dynamism.
The ultra-matte range, by contrast, o ers a grounded, chalky finish that’s beautifully suited to plaster walls, timber floors and period detailing. The e ect is soft, architectural and timeless — a considered alternative to the more expected satin black.
Crucially, every finish is engineered to endure. Delivered in partnership with AkzoNobel, the coatings are superdurable, weather-resistant and require minimal maintenance. So while they elevate the aesthetic, they also deliver the practicality demanded by homes exposed to London’s seasons.
From converted studios to red-brick townhouses, these finishes o er something quietly new: the chance to choose steel frames not just by colour or profile, but by atmosphere. It’s a small shift in thinking — and a significant step forward in design.
These finishes also resonate with the layered aesthetic so often found in Kensington and Chelsea homes, where period detailing meets contemporary restraint. In such settings, a textured steel frame can act as a subtle bridge between old and new — picking up the gleam of a marble worktop one moment, echoing the patina of aged brass the next. It’s this quiet adaptability that makes the new collection so compelling: not simply decorative, but responsive, allowing light, material and space to interact in a way that feels both natural and intentional.

Bathroom ideas for a summer refresh from Ripples' bathroom design specialist
As temperatures rise, there’s no better time to give your bathroom a summer-inspired refresh. Whether you’re looking to create a spa-like retreat or just lighten up your space for the season, a few well-considered updates can make your bathroom feel cooler, calmer and e ortlessly stylish. Here, Jo, Senior Designer from Ripples London, talks through the top things to consider when getting your bathroom ready for those hotter months.
EMBRACE LIGHTER TONES
Summer is all about light and airiness, so consider swapping darker hues for softer, sun-washed tones. Think sandy beiges, seafoam greens, crisp whites and pale blues. These colours not only reflect light beautifully but also bring a serene, coastal calm to your space, perfect for unwinding on warmer days.
INTRODUCE NATURAL ELEMENTS
Nothing says summer like natural world. Bring the outdoors in with touches of rattan, bamboo, or unfinished wood. A wooden bath tray, woven baskets, or fluted timber vanities can instantly warm up a scheme while still feeling breezy and modern.
UPGRADE TO A STATEMENT SHOWER
When it’s hot outside, a long, cool shower can be the ultimate indulgence. If you’re thinking bigger, consider upgrading to a rainfall shower or an open-plan wet room layout. Not only does it feel luxurious, but it also keeps things light and open, perfect for a summer reset. Large-format tiles and frameless glass panels can enhance the sense of space, while integrated lighting and brushed brass fixtures add a contemporary touch. Want to go all out? Add a built-in
shower bench or a recessed shelf for your favourite cooling products - think eucalyptus oils and refreshing mists to create a spa-like escape you’ll love year-round.
SWITCH UP YOUR ACCESSORIES
Sometimes, a few small swaps are all it takes, switch out heavy towels for lighter linens or swap your bathmat for something woven or textural. Even changing your fragrance to something citrusy or herbal can transform the mood of the room. Whether you’re going for a full renovation or just making a few summery tweaks, your bathroom can be a space to cool o , relax, and feel refreshed all season long. After all, good design isn’t just about how a space looks, it’s about how it makes you feel.

Atkin & Thyme: unique, hand-crafted design for over a decade
Atkin & Thyme has spent over a decade creating furniture that goes beyond function – each piece is designed to tell a story, spark emotion, and bring character into the spaces we live in. The brand’s distinctive collections showcase a thoughtful blend of characterful marbles, hand-selected woods, and luxurious finishes, with a strong emphasis on quality craftsmanship and timeless materials.
From indoor/outdoor co ee tables to UK-made, made to order sofas, elegant bedframes, statement lighting and dining furniture, every design is created to suit modern lifestyles while adding charm and individuality to the home.
Much-loved pieces like the Calvin Armchair and the Flute Storage Collection – now available in three beautiful finishes:
black, natural, and vintage – have become icons within the range, combining style, practicality, and enduring appeal. This season, the collection embraces new colour and pattern directions in marble and concrete, alongside bold, playful shapes and tactile upholstery that invites touch.
Earlier this year, Atkin & Thyme took centre stage as the o cial Furniture Partner for Grand Designs Live, London, giving visitors the opportunity to experience its designs in person and appreciate the quality first-hand. The brand also celebrated recognition from the Ideal Home Awards, with the Brera Bedside Table – crafted from rich Emperador Italian marble – winning praise from both design enthusiasts and industry experts. The full Brera Collection continues to captivate with its refined detailing and sculptural lines.
The brand’s thoughtful approach extends outdoors, with a stylish alfresco

The Valentina Set, in a serene sage green powder-coated aluminium, has quickly become a favourite – loved for its durability, versatility, and understated elegance. A cruise taking in three of Northern Europe's great cities means time – both to explore and to enjoy the hedonism of life on board
By SANDY CADIZ-SMITH
Luxury cruising is the pinnacle of relaxed travel, combining adventure, time and space to relax and foodie indulgence – and with the ultimate convenience of unpacking just once. Every day you wake up to a new and captivating destination, then return to world-class service, exquisite gourmet dining, and opulent accommodation. Welcome aboard Crystal Symphony, where we soon discover that every moment of the journey is a pleasure.
This is our first experience with no-fly cruising. It won't be our last. No airports, no stress, and a short drive from the station brings us directly to our port-side embarkation point where our luggage is soon whisked away. As we step aboard Crystal Symphony in the historic port of Dover we’re greeted with champagne and smiles – we've arrived.
The ship is elegant and spacious – gleaming marble floors, sumptuous lounges, and tempting bars. Our expectations are high, and Crystal Symphony’s recent multimillion-dollar refurbishment means larger, revamped suites and even more expansive public spaces. This ship does cruises di erently. It can accommodate just 606 passengers (small-scale compared to most liners) and, even more impressive, there's an almost one-to-one sta -to-guest ratio.
There's a lot to explore and so we head straight upstairs to Marketplace on Deck 11 for lunch. With our plates laden with delicious treats from the bu et, we grab a seat out on the deck in the sunshine, taking in the beautiful view of Dover Castle and the white cli s. It’s soon time for the muchanticipated announcement that all suites are ready, and then we head o to discover our home-from-home for the next eight days.
To describe our Sapphire Veranda Suite as spacious would be a bit of an understatement.
"Our butler, anticipates our every whim, and iced lattes, fine wines and delectable snacks materialise at precisely the right moment"
It's a sanctuary, comprising a generously proportioned living area connected to the bedroom, a walk-in wardrobe and double balcony. The pièce de résistance is the marble-clad bathroom – an immense and luxurious space with double basins and a lavishly oversized shower large enough to host a cocktail party. Eminently organisable, too, given that all drinks on board are included.
As we’re still absorbing our surroundings, a gentle knock at the door signals the arrival of Victor, our butler. Crystal talks proudly about its 'intuitive service'. I wasn't entirely sure what that meant until I met Victor. He has an almost preternatural ability to anticipate our every whim, and iced lattes, fine wines and delectable snacks materialise at precisely the right moment. Early evening, he arrives with a perfectly chilled bottle of champagne on ice and an elegant platter of canapés. This thoughtful, almost telepathic, service (always with a smile) takes our voyage from luxurious to unforgettable. So much attention to detail and, yes, intuitive service. Starting and ending in Dover, our journey is through the historic heart of Europe. We discover the vibrant culture, art, and cuisine
of three Northern European gems – exploring exciting Amsterdam before heading on to Belgium and the fairytale beauty of Bruges. From there, it's on to the timeless elegance of French cathedral city Rouen. What adds a special touch to this voyage is that we linger overnight in both Amsterdam and Rouen. This adds immeasurably to the pleasure of the voyage, giving us ample time to explore, both through Crystal’s welldesigned excursions and independently. Our final stop – by now we're in bonus land – is in the postcard-perfect town of St Peter Port in Guernsey before the final salty leg back to Dover.
Perhaps the defining cruise moment of our journey is the serene passage along the Seine, as we glide gracefully towards Rouen before retracing our course back to the open sea. There is an enchantment to river cruising – it brings a feeling of peace and tranquility, especially when you consider how many sailors have travelled this same route over centuries. The ever-shifting landscape unfolds like a living canvas – it's food for the soul.
And that is not the only food on o er, naturally. Every great cruise is marked by its food and here there are no less than ten dining options, including 24-hour in-suite dining. From the superlative Japanese-Peruvian cuisine of Nobu to traditional Italian, gourmet classics, sushi, grills, tapas, and bu et-style feasts, a choice of delicious dining options fill our days on board.
The same goes for entertainment. There’s live music at all the bars, plus incredible
Broadway-themed performances, headline acts, and stand-up comedy. There are lectures from high-profile speakers, plus wellness, dance, bridge, and photography classes. Should you require some quiet time, there's also a lovely on-board library where you can spend a happy hour or two poring over the vast selection of books. Happy is what all the hours are on a Crystal Cruise. The world-class cuisine, impeccable service, superb itineraries, and elegant surroundings create an unforgettable experience. And of course, there’s also our welcoming and remarkably intuitive Victor.
Crystal has two ships in its fleet – Crystal Symphony and Crystal Serenity. They are constantly moving, rather than home porting, and they try never to repeat the same itinerary within even a couple of years, so that every Crystal cruise is unique. An eight-night cruise from Barcelona to Lisbon on Crystal Serenity costs from £4,600 per person based on two people sharing a double guest room with ocean view. Price includes all meals and drinks, port fees, WIFI, and gratuities. Call Crystal on 0808 178 3396 or visit crystalcruises.com

Heading
out to explore the Spanish and Mediterranean coast on a swish mega-yacht is a dream come true
There’s a cruise experience tailored to every traveller.
For those who find vast ships, bustling crowds and long queues overwhelming, SeaDream o ers the perfect alternative. Founded in 2001, SeaDream Yacht Club boasts a pair of identical mega-yachts – SeaDream I and II. Sleek, elegant and intimately scaled, they accommodate a maximum of just 112 guests, ensuring an atmosphere of exclusivity and tranquility SeaDream proudly upholds its philosophy of yachting, not cruising, promising a distinctly intimate and bespoke experience. Upon our arrival in Barcelona, the twin
yachts sit side-by-side in an exclusive dock, almost as if they belong to some elite (and secret) club. We soon discover this isn’t far from the truth.
One of the many advantages of an intimate yacht experience is the e ortless embarkation. There’s no waiting, just a swift and seamless welcome aboard. We’re greeted poolside with champagne by Captain Kristian and Cruise Director Anna, setting the tone for what is clearly a di erent kind of sailing. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming as both guests and crew embrace like long-lost friends. It quickly becomes apparent that many guests on board are devoted SeaDreamers, returning time and time again. Everyone seems to know each other, and now, we are about to become part of it.
"Our itinerary takes us along the Iberian coast with a stop across the Straits of Gibraltar in Tangier"
We’re escorted past the shimmering pool and its inviting sun loungers into the lounge. A mouthwatering display of canapés awaits (the first of many), champagne flutes are instantly topped up and we’re treated to a soothing neck and shoulder massage. The check-in process is swift, and we’re soon guided to our lavish suite with its comfortable seating area, complete with more champagne, and a marble-lined bathroom.
It’s easy to embrace the idyllic SeaDream lifestyle where wishes seem to be fulfilled before they are even expressed. The yacht’s commitment to personal service – with an
impressive crew-to-guest ratio – ensures expectations are exceeded every time. From the exceptional cuisine and curated selection of fine wines to the thoughtful, extra touches, SeaDream sta work hard to make every moment special. By the second day, everyone knows our names and we’re greeted warmly everywhere we go. By this time, our favourite drinks are poured without a word from us, dishes perfectly suited to our tastes are recommended, sunglasses polished and thoughtful gifts await in our suite every evening. Among the yacht’s most enchanting o erings is the chance to sleep
under the stars – a truly unforgettable experience in the Balinese Front Bed on Deck 6 Forward, luxuriously prepared with the finest linens for a night's peaceful slumber lulled by the waves below.
Every evening we eagerly anticipate the irresistible, ever-changing selection of small bites and surprise extras. Twice during our voyage we are treated to an opulent caviar service, presented on ice and served in the time-honoured way with a mother-of-pearl spoon. One night an extravagant dessert bu et is served in the lounge after dinner, a breathtaking display of sweet treats that leaves us momentarily speechless before we tuck in with delight. This is, quite literally, pudding heaven.
There’s a large comfortable dining room but you can choose to have dinner anywhere on deck if you’d prefer, just ask at reception. And the food is a constant delight. The incredible multi-course menu changes every day and there’s so much to choose from. If you do fall in love with a particular dish, you can order it whether it’s on the menu or not. Of course you can –this is a SeaDream experience.
Whether we’re lounging on the supercomfortable Balinese beds, taking a dip in the pool, trying a new cocktail, indulging in Thai-inspired treatments in the spa or relaxing in the lounge, library book in hand (yes, there’s a particularly well-stocked library), days onboard are relaxed and indulgent. And our stops along the way are just as inspiring.
Our itinerary takes us along the Iberian coast with a stop in Tangier, Morocco. Having boarded in Barcelona, we hug this sun-drenched coast visiting Valencia,
"An extravagant dessert buffet leaves us speechless – quite literally, pudding heaven"
Cartagena, Motril (for Granada), Tangier, then back via Gibraltar and Puerto Banus before disembarking in Malaga. Visiting all these greats in one week is a real privilege – also a great way to get a sense of the history and culture of this quarter of the Mediterranean and see familiar (and unfamiliar) landmark cities from a whole new perspective. And there is nothing like arriving in style in a mega-yacht.
It’s a whirlwind trip through some of the greatest coastal cities in Spain and across the water in North Africa. An intimate and unforgettable voyage that evokes a sense of belonging that is both rare and irresistible. We leave the voyage as proud, lifelong members of the elite SeaDreamer club. You could say, a SeaDream come true.
REVEALED ON SEADREAM I 2-9 May 2026 (7 days). Leaving from Malaga and calling at Tangier, Gibraltar, Puerto Banus, Almeria, Alicante, Valencia and Barcelona.

Bahrain is the kind of hidden gem families dream ofwarm, welcoming, and a very manageable six hours away. Think sun-soaked beaches, magical souks and world-class resorts with kids’ clubs and spas. With great weather almost all year round, it's ideal for little explorers and parents craving a warm, e ortless escape.
We were able to enjoy two very di erent resorts this Easter with the sublime Hawar Resort by Mantis and The Four Seasons in Bahrain Bay.
Tucked away on Bahrain’s UNESCOrecognised Hawar Island, Hawar Resort by Mantis is a serene escape that blends barefoot
luxury with eco-conscious design, perfect for families seeking adventure and tranquility. Just a 30-minute boat ride from the mainland, this resort feels like a world apart, o ering pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters, and a rich natural habitat.
Inspired by the ancient Bahraini custom of Al-Korar, the resort boasts 104 elegantly designed accommodations, including overwater villas and beachfront suites, each thoughtfully crafted to harmonise with the island's natural beauty. We enjoyed a beachside villa with very spacious rooms, a private pool, two large luxury bathrooms and direct beach access, ensuring comfort and privacy. Little ones were free to roam free and it felt very safe and playful. For families, the resort is a haven of activities. Children can explore the Bear Grylls Adventure Zone, enjoy the kids' water park, or make new friends in the thoughtfully designed
kids and teens club. Families can even enjoy camel and horse-back riding. Parents can relax knowing that nanny services are available, allowing them to unwind at the spa or take part in yoga and fitness classes.
Adventure seekers will fi nd plenty to do, from kayaking, paddleboarding and snorkeling in the clear waters to exploring the island's wildlife sanctuary. The resort's commitment to sustainability is evident in its use of biodegradable materials, energy-e cient technologies, and waste-sorting practices, ensuring a minimal environmental footprint.
Dining at Hawar Resort is a culinary journey, with five distinctive venues o ering Bahraini, regional, and international cuisines. Each restaurant emphasizes sustainability, using locally sourced ingredients to create flavourful dishes that cater to diverse palates.
Hawar Resort by Mantis seamlessly combines luxury, adventure, and sustainability, making it an ideal destination for families looking to reconnect with nature without sacrificing comfort.
Perched on its own private island in the heart of Manama, the Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay is a sanctuary where modern elegance meets family-friendly luxury. From the moment you cross the bridge onto this exclusive retreat, the city’s bustle fades, replaced by serene sea views and impeccable service.
For families seeking a blend of relaxation and luxury, the resort delivers on all fronts.
The Kids For All Seasons club o ers a daily schedule of arts and crafts, storytelling, and outdoor play. Meanwhile, the Dhow Waterpark, inspired by traditional Bahraini sailing vessels, features seven slides and over 70 interactive play elements, making it a hit with children of all ages .
The Beach Club, designed with a laid-back California surf shack vibe, provides a haven for older kids with arcade games, pinball
machines, and a selection of board games . It's a space where they can unwind and socialise in a setting tailored just for them.
With the children settled, we were able to enjoy a moment of tranquility at the hotel's luxury spa. Although they do o er familyfriendly options like the Relaxed Us massage, designed for parent and child to enjoy together, we indulged in the couple's massage. The spa's facilities include a 25-meter indoor pool, salt room, steam room, jacuzzis, and separate fitness centers for men and women.
Accommodations at the Four Seasons are designed with families in mind. Spacious rooms and suites o er stunning views of the Arabian Gulf or the Manama skyline. We loved the child-size bathrobes, and pop-up tents to make younger guests feel at home.
For those who enjoy culinary delights, this hotel has you covered, with four restaurants and two bars. We enjoyed lunch at the elegant 'CUT by Wolfgang Puck' steakhouse, which has won 50 Best Restaurants in the Middle East and North Africa for three consecutive years and it's not hard to see why. The food and
service were second-to-none.
Ending the holiday on a high, on our final evening, with a babysitter hired, we were able to enjoy a spectacular dining experience at Re Asian Cuisine. Up on the 50th floor, they o er contemporary Japanese and Thai cuisine with a panoramic view over Bahrain. All restaurants and bars regularly feature Guest Chefs, awardwinning bar tenders and themed afternoon teas so make sure you ask at reception.
The firm favourite for the whole family was the breakfast bu et, featuring entire sections for Asian, middle-eastern, European, glutenfree and more. There was so much choice, which is great for fussy little ones. This a destination that understands the nuances of family travel, o ering thoughtful touches and experiences that cater to guests of all ages.

Francis Holland Prep created a ‘Fearless Girl’ recreation in flowers and picked up a coveted Chelsea in Bloom Gold
Francis Holland Prep’s floral interpretation of this year’s Chelsea in Bloom ‘Flowers in Fashion’ theme picked up a Gold, to the delight of pupils and sta in both Prep and Senior schools and the parent body. For this was very much a team e ort.
The starting point and inspiration for the design was ‘Fearless Girl’, a symbol and uno cial mascot of both Francis Holland Prep and sister senior Francis Holland, Sloane Square, a short walk up the King’s Road. The design was inspired by Kristen Visbal’s bronze statue which stands in New York – an o cial replica is on display at Francis Holland, Sloane Square.
This wonderful floral version was covered entirely in moss and flowers, a book held firmly in her hand and wearing the school’s distinctive uniform of tartan skirt and navy jumper. Dressing the historic entrance to the Prep at 15 Manresa Road – once home to the Chelsea Public Library – the design incorporated dried, fresh, and handmade

flowers. The handmade blooms were carefully curated by Francis Holland Prep pupils. In late May, the school was delighted to hear that this bespoke design had
not only won a prestigious Gold Award (only 14 out of 130 participants were awarded a Gold) but also a special mention for the Innovation Award. The Chelsea in Bloom judges commented on both the creativity and the sustainability of the installation – particularly pupils’ handmade flowers, which were made from upcycled school uniforms. The girls had chosen this approach to underline the vital importance of sustainable fashion.
The winning design was a real group e ort. FHS parent Lola Cavanilles, an artist, interior and flower designer, gave generously of her time and expertise, and many other parents, sta and pupils spent hours on the planning, design and final installation.
The school was especially delighted to be among the winners with so many other superb entries by Chelsea in Bloom participants. Following this success, Francis Holland Prep and Senior girls hope to take part in in many more local community events and challenges – and do so fearlessly.
The opening of the Garden Room at Hackney School of Food means children and community can enjoy even more inspiring seed-to-table experiences
By LIBBY NORMAN
There's something magical about Hackney School of Food – a growth mindset in its most literal form.
Tucked away in one of the most densely populated quarters of London behind high brick walls, it's a lush oasis centred on the pleasures of growing, tending, cooking and eating.
There's the School of Food, a kitchen where groups of children turn chef for the day and then dine together. There's the beautiful garden full of colourful ornamentals and an impressive range of edibles. And now there's the Garden Room, bringing education
about food and growing together in one light-filled space. In an era characterised by a doom loop approach to health education, this shows how to make such lessons lifea rming, inspiring and fun.
The Hackney School of Food started out in 2020 and sits on the same Oswald Street, Clapton site as Mandeville Primary School. Both school and cookery school are part of LEAP, a federation of three Hackney primary schools, and Hackney School of Food is run as a community interest company (CIC). This means it has a strong remit to reach out to local residents in an area underserved by green spaces and facing issues such as poverty, food poverty and obesity.
While not for profit, it opens its doors to the wider community through programmes and courses – to date over 7,000 children from nearly 60 schools from across London and beyond have visited the School of Food. Everyone benefits, but for the children of Mandeville Primary, this is their place –visible from the playground and accessible for all sorts of activities.
The Garden Room is a high-ceilinged and flexible teaching and meeting space with views over well-used playground on one side and green and verdant plot on the other. The garden is a miracle of inspired design and careful planting (Head Gardener Lidka D'Agostino certainly

knows her stu ). There's no corner here wasted but still a feeling of space to roam. All the more surprising when you learn that this was once a rather wasted area of playground – rarely used due to frequent waterlogging, says Mandeville School Headteacher Marc Thompson.
As a growing zone, it's perfect. Shelter provided by the warm brick walls and ring of buildings beyond creates a microclimate perfect for wall-trained and freestanding fruit trees and bushes – choice rarities such as jostaberry and medlar among them. Tomatoes can climb and ripen on the vine in this sheltered spot, while salad comestibles and herbs enjoy optimal care in the raised beds, having been nurtured from seed in the highly productive greenhouse. Happy chickens roam and
Everything in this space is child-centric, including the raised beds at child height, and the process of growing from seed –taught in the Garden Room and garden itself – continues on to tasting at the table. Young children tend to be suspicious about anything unfamiliar put on their plate by adults, but give them the opportunity to savour the di erences between sweet, savoury and bitter by sampling a morsel from the garden then learning the name of the plant and they become more receptive. And if they've grown something from seed themselves or seen it flourish in the garden, children become way more inclined to give eating it a go.
Head Food Educator Tom Walker and team carry this adventurous growth mindset from the garden and Garden Room through to the School of Food. Here, the rituals of preparing and cooking something delicious together and then sitting down as
a group to feast nurtures positive attitudes to food, and social time around a table.
The hub this has become for the community beyond the school gates can be seen in the activities programme. From sushi and breadmaking sessions through to masterclasses in compost making, it all happens here. Hackney School of Food also welcomes private and corporate bookings –and what a great space for an away-day.
Children remain at the heart, and young people across Hackney and far beyond can enjoy a fruitful half or full day in the kitchen and garden. Cooking classes cover everything from basic nutrition and safe knife skills to eating with the seasons. In the garden and Garden Room, they find out how to grow and tend, discover more about pollination and insects, learn about soil composition and improvement and consider really big questions – food miles and reducing the environmental impact of what we consume included.
These are lessons that, hopefully, will shape positive lifelong habits. Mandeville and other schools within LEAP can testify to the di erence it makes to the children. "They have a better understanding of planting, food production and natural life cycles as a result of this rich experience. We see the di erence every day," says Marc Thompson.
Hackney School of Food came about thanks to support at local-council and London-wide level, and from generous charitable trusts. It has influential champions – Chefs in Schools and Sainsbury's among them. Bringing the idea from seed to fruition was a triumph. Let's hope it becomes a blueprint for other schemes, and for all that can be achieved when you create a space where children go on that journey from seed to fork – and enjoy the pleasure of food grown, cooked and eaten together.

Our experts answer your questions on summer tutoring for Common Entrance and extra support for a child struggling to focus at school

Managing Director, Simply Learning Tuition
QWe’re considering hiring a tutor during the long summer break to help our son, 12, keep on track with learning so he’s confident about forthcoming senior school entrance tests. Can you advise?
AFor families, the long summer holidays are a welcome opportunity to rest and reconnect. While this is great for wellbeing, concerns can naturally arise around the balance of rest alongside keeping children intellectually engaged. This is particularly true as your son is

preparing for an entrance assessment. Senior school tests are so important that you could be forgiven for skipping summer entirely. However, I would caution against this. There is so much that can be done to help improve attainment and, if your son is being put forward for the right schools, he should only need a small amount of ‘keeping up’ over the summer.
That said, summer learning loss is a recognised problem. According to the Education Endowment Foundation, students can lose up to two months of academic progress, particularly in literacy and maths. There are some simple ways to ensure that children remain stimulated. Approached with a sense of lightness, activities can be integrated into holiday time.
Reading widely is the key to success. Encourage your son to choose his own books. Talk to him about the books he’s read. Asking him about characters, plot and what he did or didn’t like will hone his analytical skills. Not all children are willing readers and, if this is the case, try playing story CDs on car journeys – audio books also require deep listening skills and concentration.
Working on platforms such as Atom Learning is fine, but I would also recommend something more
human. You aren’t just trying to pass an online test but to instil a love for learning. At some point there will be an interview and your son needs to have something interesting to say. Boys are notoriously reluctant readers and often dislike including more than the bare minimum detail in written work. With a little support, they can write and analyse material much more e ectively. Past papers from ISEB (available from Galore Park) will help hone composition and comprehension. As a parent, you can read, give comment and – most importantly – spend time with your son to build his confidence.
Back to the question of a tutor. Quite often families build in time with a private tutor over the summer. If you are already preparing for the assessments with your regular tutor, you might be able to book additional sessions. Or you can hire someone for a light-touch summer programme to keep momentum going.
A small amount of structure (2-3 sessions per week for a month, for example) could help your son return to school feeling enthusiastic and ready for the entrance tests. The right plan would o er time to plug gaps, refine exam technique and revisit tricky topics.

QMy young daughter is having some problems settling down to learn at school and I’ve heard that specialist therapy may be a beneficial addition to the extra help she’s now receiving from her teachers and school support sta . Can you explain more?
AIt can be very worrying when a child seems to be falling behind at school, especially when they’re already receiving extra help but still struggling. If your daughter is easily
distracted and her reading and writing skills aren’t progressing as expected, there could be underlying factors making learning more di cult than it needs to be. Specialist therapy can be a powerful complement to the support she’s already receiving by looking more deeply into the root causes and not just the symptoms.
Often, emotional and learning challenges stem from deeper neurological or physiological imbalances. These can include retained primitive reflexes (earlylife movement patterns that haven’t fully integrated), auditory processing di culties, nutritional imbalances, or even inherited genetic predispositions that a ect mood, energy, and focus.
nutrition. This is combined with kinesiology techniques to design a personalised plan that supports emotional balance, cognitive function and overall wellbeing.
Nutrition plays a big part. Many children with focus issues or low mood have underlying deficiencies or sensitivities that a ect their brain function. By working with families, we are able to explore these factors and then make gentle but e ective changes.
“Nutrition plays a big part. Many children with focus issues or low mood have underlying sensitivities that a ect brain function”
Our approach is holistic and child-centred, combining multiple therapies to support the whole child. For example, our neurodevelopmental therapy works to integrate primitive reflexes that can interfere with attention and learning. Auditory retraining, based on Dr. Guy Berard’s method, helps improve how a child processes sound – which is essential for concentration and communication.
For more complex or persistent challenges, we o er Blueprint Kinesiology, which uses non-invasive genetic understanding to identify how a child’s system is uniquely wired. This gives us powerful insight into how their brain and body respond to stress, stimulation and
Ultimately, the goal is to empower children by addressing the root causes of their challenges, rather than masking symptoms. Families often tell us they’ve tried many routes before finding us and it’s the combination of therapies, tailored to each individual child, that finally makes a di erence.
Whether your child is experiencing anxiety, trouble focusing, low confidence, or has a diagnosis such as ADHD or sensory processing disorder, integrative therapy can be a valuable complement to classroom support. We work closely with families, teachers, and also schools to ensure everyone is part of the journey. Flexible in-person and online programmes, plus an app, ensure we can be where families are, and we o er initial consultations to help discover the best next step for each child.
