LETTER Editor’s

ABSOLUTELY’S August issue highlights

Back in the dark days of Covid – the very first lockdown was announced on my birthday, which was fun – I decided to take a personal training course. It wasn't anything major as I was in full-time employment, so was done more out of interest than with any career change aspirations. What I discovered is how remarkable the human body is.

You always hear about how making a small change to your lifestyle can reap the benefits, and it's so true. So much goes into making us work on a daily basis, and just the odd slip here or there can have a lasting impact. I haven't become one of those who refuses a bag of crisps, I am just more aware that one cheat day should be it. I wasn't always one to add more veg to my meals, but I do now as I know what kind of impact it will have. Sleep, too, is paramount and something I try to stick to a rigid routine around.

The result is I feel probably fitter than ever – and I spent 20 years playing football at a pretty decent standard. All of this adds up to why I love it when our health and fitness special comes around as I am genuinely interested in what experts in different fields have to say. Reading our piece on Pilates has convinced me to give it a go, and it's great the county has so much to offer when it comes to R&R. So, take a breathe, relax and enjoy the issue.

National Trust’s Claydon is offering a vibrant look at fashion from a bygone era

Atreasure trove of fashion history is stepping into the spotlight at Claydon, a National Trust historic country house nestled in the Buckinghamshire countryside. Until 20th October, visitors can explore an intriguing new costume display showcasing both original and replica garments worn by the Verney family in the 17th-century – including a pirate’s silk gown, Florence Nightingale’s sash, and a rare 17th-century maternity corset. Claydon was the ancestral home of the Verney family for more than 400 years and has one of the most historically significant family costume collections in the UK. Family legend has it that the 17th-century items of clothing were shut away in a cupboard until the Victorians brought them out for dress-up. Their significance was realised in the 1900s and the costumes were protected once more. Due to their fragility, the original garments are displayed only once every seven years in a humidity-controlled glass case. But thanks to the dedication of Claydon’s volunteer sewing team, visitors can now admire faithful replicas throughout the house. These costumes feature in the National Trust’s upcoming book 100 Things to Wear, launching this September, which celebrates the stories behind historic garments across the Trust’s properties. For a hands-on experience, guests can try on reproduction garments in the North Hall and pose for photos in a giant picture frame. nationaltrust.org.uk

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat brings its award-winning show back to the area, with a dynamic duo at the top of the cast. Absolutely meets them both to find out more

“The show is such an iconic part of British musical theatre. It now draws three generations to see it”

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat returns to Milton Keynes Theatre, having played to packed audiences in 2022. Starring in this show as Pharaoh will be Joe McElderry, who previously performed as Joseph in Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s iconic musical during an extensive 2017/2018 UK tour. Joe has been non-stop ever since he burst onto the scene in 2009 as the baby-faced winner of The X Factor. The singer quickly stormed into the UK charts with his debut album Wide Awake, before discovering a new sound during his winning stint on the ITV show Popstar to Operastar in 2011. Joe has been a regular on the stage too, receiving rave reviews for his portrayal of the titular role in The Who’s rock opera Tommy and a leading role in Club Tropicana: The Musical. He will be joined on stage by Adam Filipe, who takes the lead role, and ahead of the show arriving in Buckinghamshire, Absolutely chatted to both about their links to the show and why we can’t get enough of it.

ADAM FILIPE

Joseph

Q What appealed to you about the show?

A It is such an iconic part of British musical theatre, and it has transcended a lot of other musicals in a sort of magical way. It’s been a part of British culture since the 1970s and has been a vehicle for celebrities throughout the years. It’s just got such hype surrounding it, so it was always something that I wanted to do. I performed in the show when I was a kid as well, but I was in the choir. Now I get to play the lead and it’s incredibly exciting!

Q He's been played by so many people before you. How are you making the role your own?

A I’m sort of trusting that I’ve been influenced enough by the previous Josephs because I’ve grown up with it. I loved the filmed

version of it with Donny Osmond as Joseph and I watched it again for inspiration but without wanting to copy how he did it. I’m bringing my own take and my own flavour to the role whilst trusting that the years of being immersed in Joseph culture is doing its thing without me really knowing it.

Q Have you had to get fit for the famous loincloth?

A [Laughs] There isn’t a loincloth now. I’ve got these baggy trousers, which I call the Jac Yarrow genie pants because he wore the same style in the London Palladium revival. They’re like baggy farmer pants rather than a loincloth. But there are probably about five minutes total in the show where I have a top on, so I’m staying in shape. I’m a very active person anyway, but I’ve got a routine together that’s a mixture of intermittent fasting, going to the gym and just eating sensibly.

Q Why do you think the show has endured?

A For one thing, there is such a history to it and people keep coming back to see it. It’s probably a 50/50 split between people who have seen it before and people who

are coming to Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat not knowing what it is. But I think it’s in that traditional way of storytelling, where generations are passing down the story to other generations. People who were taken to see it by their parents or grandparents are now old enough to take their own kids to the show. It draws three generations.

JOE MCELDERRY

Pharoah

Q How does it feel to be returning to Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat a decade after you first played the lead role?

A It’s hugely exciting. I spent two years touring, on and o , with Joseph and it was a huge part of my career at the time, as I think it is for anybody who’s been fortunate enough to play the role of Joseph or just be a part of the show. It’s one of those shows that always sticks with you and people mention it when they stop you in the street. They come up to you and go 'Oh my God, I came to see you in Joseph and I loved it'. When I was asked to return I was slightly anxious because I wondered if it

ADAM FILIPE AS JOSEPH AND JOE MCELDERRY AS THE PHAROAH

would be like stepping back in time, but it’s exciting to go back, this time as Pharaoh, and play a di erent role. I’m nervous, but only in terms of just the normal nerves when you take on any new part. But I know the love that the audience brings to Joseph and that it has so many devoted fans and supporters, so I’m happy to be back in that family again.

Q What appealed to you about playing Pharaoh this time around?

A It’s a really fun part of the show, where it almost turns into a little bit of a concert. When Pharaoh comes on everybody kind of goes crazy. It’s the big rock moment, and I’m enjoying putting my own spin on it and just having fun with it. You’re giving it a bit of Elvis, giving it a bit of arrogance and a bit of tongue-in-cheek sexiness... there are so many aspects to it that you can play around with.

Q What do you think makes Joseph such a classic?

A I think it’s a lot of people’s first memories of theatre, so it comes with a kind of a love and a ection from being a child. The great thing about Joseph as well is that it appeals to all ages. There’s comedy in there, there’s music in there, it’s an easy show to follow but it’s got some really fun, clever moments in there too. It attracts all ages and it’s a great family fun show, and I think if you ask anybody if they remember where they were the first time they saw Joseph it’s one of their first introductions into musical theatre, so it’s a very important musical to a lot of people.

Q You came to fame on The X Factor in 2009. How did that show change your life?

A Massively. Firstly, it was an amazing stepping stone into the industry and I think

it would have been ten times more di cult without the kind of platform and magnitude of viewership of a television show like that. And it has allowed me to have a wonderful career. I've been doing this for 15 years now and I still love it as much as I did back then. Not only that but I’ve been blessed with such wonderful support from the fans. They turn up to the shows that I’m in, they buy the music that I make, and I feel very blessed that I get to do something that I love every day.

Q Your first single went to number one. That must have been amazing?

A I was just excited to be on The X Factor at the time, so then to win it and have my song

go to number one was the icing on the cake. I didn’t even think that was a possibility, so to hear your song on the radio and have it top the charts was amazing. I’m now nearing that age where I’ve crossed into a di erent generation of how people listen to music, but back then you had to go to a shop and buy a single, so it was an incredible feeling and something that I’ll never forget. When I got to be on Top of the Pops that was amazing too, to be on a show that I grew up watching with my family.

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is at MK Theatre from 6th-10th August. Book tickets at atgtickets.com/miltonkeynes

Q What are your respective backgrounds in the food and drink industry?

A Andy and I both studied nutrition at university and we met through our mutual love of food and fitness. Andy has always been a chef, working in fine dining restaurants across England and Australia. My experience is a bit more varied, having worked in the wedding industry and restaurants in London, initially as frontof-house before moving into patisserie.

Q Have there been any jobs or places you have worked at that have shaped your cooking approach at The Oakley Arms?

Culinary JOURNEY

Why The Oakley Arms has enticed Absolutely across the border

Dare to detour o the M1, where the road narrows and the sky opens over the Great Ouse River, and you’ll be rewarded with the discovery of The Oakley Arms, a 400-yearold thatched pub in the charming village of Harrold. The Oakley Arms is the definition of relaxed refinement.

Andy and Lizzie Slater are the dynamic duo at the helm, having taken on The Oakley Arms in the spring of 2021 and proudly earning themselves two AA Rosettes in the four years since. The husband-and-wife chef team have put their heart and soul into every inch of the pub; from an all-hands-on-deck renovation to the daily changing menu that sees them working closely with their community of farmers, foragers and fishmongers. Absolutely sat down with Lizzie to find out how the Slaters are wowing foodies everywhere.

A Andy spent two years at NuNu, a beachfront restaurant in Palm Cove, Australia. It was an incredibly influential experience and Andy’s creative use of ingredients, particularly the use of sweet and sour flavours and finding the balance of robust natural ingredients, and cooking techniques is demonstrative of this. Working at Megan’s in London shaped my home-from-home ethos, which I hope is reflected in the attentive yet relaxed service guests have come to expect at The Oakley Arms. I taught myself everything I know about patisserie, but to further develop my expertise, I had stints at Michelin-starred restaurants including Frog by Adam Handling and Grantley Hall’s Sean Rankin restaurant.

ANDY AND LIZZIE SLATER
“WE ARE ALWAYS LOOKING FOR NEW TECHNIQUES”

Q What attracted you to take over The Oakley Arms back in 2021?

A Andy and I shared a vision for a countryside pub or restaurant where we would be able to showcase our love of hospitality and local produce and the lockdown provided us with a lifeline to take on the property with a minimal budget and plenty of time to renovate the pub, which was not much more than a dilapidated building at the time, and to really bring our vision to life.

Q Of course, this was during the COVID lockdowns. What kind of impact did that have on you?

A Hindsight is a wonderful thing and, looking back, I think the hardest part was launching a new business with a di erent approach while managing the local’s expectations. It was also di cult to create and provide a warm and inviting atmosphere when everyone was afraid of catching or spreading Covid.

Q When you opened, what were you aiming to o er from day one?

A The bread and butter of our business with quite literally that: selling fresh homemade bread and cakes from our side bar bakery. We wanted our main space to be comfortable and homely where people could enjoy a locally-sourced, seasonal menu. As more and more people headed back to the o ce, we decided to close the bakery to create more space for

Q How important are local producers to you?

A We couldn’t do what we do without our local suppliers and they are really at the core of our business. They’re very much part of our team and they constantly keep us on our toes as we come up with creative, new ways to use their produce. One of our favourite things about working so closely with our suppliers is how they inspire us to take care of the ingredients to deliver a top-notch product to our guests.

Q What kind of dishes can we expect to enjoy during the summer months?

the restaurant, but you can still enjoy delicious pastries every time you visit.

Q How do you work together in the kitchen?

A We don’t really as we have separate kitchens. Andy spends most of his time in the main kitchen and I’m tucked away in my pastry kitchen, which I love. However, during peak service we do work alongside each other in the pass and we enjoy that!

Q How would you say you have evolved in the four years since you started running The Oakley Arms?

A Gosh, in so many ways! We’ve learnt that you have to adapt quickly and always be resilient, but our biggest lesson has been to always stay true to our styles and tastes so our guests know what to expect from us. We’re very lucky that our team have been with us a while and they share the same passion and vision which makes things easier.

Q What do you aim to o er with your menu?

A Seasonal and local ingredients always come first on our menu, but we are always looking for new ingredients and techniques to impress our customers. After a lot of trial and error, we have managed to strike the balance between a handful of recognisable and simple dishes and more complex, intriguing dishes – both of which are perfect for every occasion.

A There is so much to look forward to. You can expect a fabulous selection of fruity desserts from Heath Fruit Farm, delicious local rabbit from Pavenham and lamb from Carlton, all of which will be served with locally foraged ingredients.

Q Are there any ingredients you love working with at this time of year?

A After a long winter, it’s really exciting to be able to work with such vibrant ingredients. We’re big wild garlic fans and, during the summer months, we love getting creative with the beautiful British fruits we grow in our garden and local allotments.

Q How does the 2 AA Rosette recognition feel, and does it add pressure?

A It’s nice to know that customers are expecting a certain level of cooking and service, which allows us to be a little unconventional with the types of dishes we serve as it intrigues the customer. It also sets a standard for us to work to.

Q What comes next for you?

A At the moment, we’re focused on staying consistent while navigating a very challenging time for the hospitality industry. We are also working hard to refine techniques and we would really love to take on more space so we can grow more of our own ingredients. Watch this space…

Core of the MATTER

A Pilates expert in Beaconsfield writes about the five ways it can transform your body

Pilates is a system of exercises centered around the fundamental principles of control, centre, concentration, coordination, precision, flow and breath, all working together in harmony – and it can truly transform how you look and feel.

IMPROVED CORE STRENGTH AND STABILITY

Pilates is known for its emphasis on core strength – the core is the centre of the body from which all movement stems, it consists of the muscles that make up your trunk. When strengthened, the core

helps support and stabilize the body. Pilates targets the deep core muscles –abdominals, hips, lower back and pelvis resulting in a stronger and more stable centre referred to as your “powerhouse”. The focus of Pilates is controlled, precise movements performed slowly and deliberately. Many Pilates movements involve holding positions or moving in ways that challenge core endurance and postural control. Pilates exercises also target the deeper abdominal muscles and the pelvic floor to both contract and release. These muscles work like a brace to lift and support the organs, and protect and stabilize the back – and regular participants report improvement in back pain.

WELCOME TO YATTA STUDIO
“Pilates creates a sense of alignment”

INCREASED FLEXIBILITY

Pilates includes a lot of eccentric movements (where muscles lengthen while under tension), which are particularly e ective at increasing flexibility and strength simultaneously. At the same time Pilates emphasizes deep, mindful breathing, which helps relax the nervous system and allows muscles to let go of tightness, making it easier to stretch further. By strengthening weaker muscles and stretching tighter ones, Pilates promotes muscular balance, reducing sti ness and allowing for a greater range of movement. Not only does Pilates support flexibility of the outer limbs, the spine will be moved through five shapes – flexion, extension, lateral flexion and rotation. A famous quote from Joseph Pilates is “you are only as young as your spine is flexible”.

IMPROVED POSTURE

Pilates improves posture through a combination of core strengthening, body awareness, and alignment-focused movement. By strengthening the deep abdominal muscles, back and pelvic floor we are strengthening the muscles that support the spine and pelvis. A strong core acts like a natural brace, keeping your torso upright and aligned without excess strain. Pilates can address postural imbalances by stretching tight muscles (for example, hip flexors, chest) and strengthening weak ones (for example, glutes, upper back), helping to bring the body into balance – creating better muscular symmetry and reducing compensation patterns

like slouching. Regular Pilates can also greatly improve body awareness teaching you to consciously control your body’s position and helping you to recognise poor posture throughout the day,

GREATER MIND-BODY CONNECTION

Pilates is widely recognized for enhancing the mind-body connection – the conscious awareness and control of movement, posture, and breath. By creating space for focused attention and control, Pilates emphasises these elements in every movement; you are not just moving – you are thinking about how you move.

You’re trained to actively recruit specific muscles, especially the deep core, rather than moving on autopilot. Breath is a principle in Pilates and the cornerstone of creating a deep mind-body connection by enhancing oxygen flow and energy, keeping your present within your body, reducing stress and promoting activation of the parasympathetic nervous system. With controlled and deliberate movement,

coordinated breath and the use of verbal and tactile cues, Pilates creates a sense of alignment from head to toe – the more you practice the more refined your internal “body map” becomes. By integrating the whole body from the inside out, you will train your body to move e ciently with your mind fully involved. If you’re looking to build a stronger mind-body connection, Pilates is especially beneficial because it blends mental discipline, physical control, and breathwork into a single, focused practice.

CAN ENHANCE SPORT PERFORMANCE

Whether you’re a professional athlete or not, Pilates can elevate your sport and hobby activities. Recent studies published in the Journal of Exercise Rehabilitation record that Pilates may help improve speed, power, and range of motion, increase muscle mass and improve core and trunk strength.

A local experts from Newbury on how you can keep biting insects at bay this summer

SARA

Even if you’re not travelling to any far flung corners of the world this year, mosquitoes and midges can still be a nuisance in cooler climes closer to home, especially if you’re looking forward to a camping or walking holiday. The immune system’s response to an insect’s saliva or venom can cause pain, swelling and redness. Ward o unwanted attention from mosquitoes and other biting insects with the following insect-repelling tips.

COVER UP

Take yourself o the menu! The simplest way to do this is to cover up with longsleeved shirts and trousers, especially at dawn and dusk, when they are most likely to bite, and use a mosquito net at night.

BE CHOOSY ABOUT YOUR COLOURS

White repels almost any insect, whereas darker colours, navy and black, attract mosquitoes. This is because darker colours trap the CO2 produced by your body, which appeals to them. Yellow is also a good colour for repelling mosquitoes as they can barely see it.

USE AN INSECT REPELLENT ON EXPOSED

SKIN

A good insect repellent on exposed skin should also help to keep biting bugs at bay. Many sprays and lotions will contain a chemical called DEET (diethyl-metatoluamide), which although e ective, can produce adverse reactions in some people. Natural insect repellents can be an e ective option, minus side e ects. Neem seed extract is a popular alternative to DEET-containing sprays. The scent of neem masks your individual scent, making you less easy to find. It can also be used against midges which are particularly troublesome in the UK, and flies. Try A.Vogel’s Herbal Insect Repellent Spray. It is suitable for all the family (but not children under four, or pregnant women due to the essential oil content) and should be applied to exposed areas of skin every three hours or as required.

TOP UP ON MOSQUITO-REPELLING FOODS

Garlic eaten on a regular basis can have a repellent e ect and should make you smell less appetising to hungry insects. This is due to the compound allicin, which is released through your pores. Allicin interferes with your natural scent making you a harder target to find. Onions and other allicin-

containing foods, such as leeks, shallots and chives, have a similar e ect.

Apple cider vinegar is also believed to work in a similar way, disguising your scent, whereas lemongrass contains citronella, a natural bug repellent that can be applied to skin or used in other ways. Citronella candles, for example, are a popular outdoors repellent during the summer months.

AVOID FOODS THAT ATTRACT MOSQUITOES

Reducing your intake of sugary foods can also help. Sugar makes your blood taste sweeter, especially to mosquitoes, so by cutting down on the sweet stu , you shouldn’t taste as good. That said, you’re not home and dry with salty foods either. Mosquitoes are attracted to the high amount of lactic acid these foods produce, which is also the reason why you’re likely to attract mosquitoes when you exercise (coupled with the fact you’re likely to be wearing fewer clothes).

And their favourite beverage? Beer. Whilst researchers still aren’t sure why this is, they do agree that even a small bottle of beer seems to draw the little critters in.

A sneaky gin and tonic? Whilst there is some evidence to suggest that quinine, which is naturally present in tonic water, may have a repellent e ect, the majority of scientists refute this. Equally divisive is the assertion that thiamine or B1 (food sources include tomatoes) can have a bug repellent e ect. What do I recommend? Stick to the bright colours and the neem and don’t forget the garlic. If it also wards o the odd human, well that’s not always a bad thing…

Honey Halloumi and Crispy Chickpea Salad

Serves 4 1 hour

Rachel Rees says: “Preparation is key for busy clients looking to eat well whilst remaining energised throughout the day. I love this recipe because it's packed with blood sugar-balancing nutrients, and it can be eaten hot or cold.”

INGREDIENTS

• 1 vegetable stock cube

• 125ml boiling water

• 100g dry wholemeal couscous

• 1 tbsp honey

• 1 tbsp sriracha

• 1 tsp balsamic vinegar

• 200g halloumi, sliced

• 1 large cauliflower, chopped into small florets

• 1 x 400g tin chickpeas, drained and rinsed

• 1 tbsp paprika, sweet or smoked

• 1 tbsp harissa

• 1 tbsp olive oil

• 1 red onion, chopped

• Handful of rocket and/or spinach

METHOD

1 Preheat the oven to 200°C/180°C fan/gas mark 6.

2 Add a stock cube to 125ml of boiling water in a bowl and stir. Add the couscous and cover. Set aside.

3 In a bowl, mix the honey, sriracha and balsamic vinegar. Add the sliced halloumi and mix well, ensuring the halloumi is well coated with the mixture. Set aside whilst preparing the remaining ingredients.

4 Put the cauliflower and chickpeas into a roasting tin. Add the paprika, harissa and olive oil and mix until evenly coated. Spread evenly onto the tray and roast for 30-45 minutes, checking them regularly as oven temperatures can vary. Turn halfway through cooking. Add the red onion to the roasting tin for the last 20 minutes.

5 Once the vegetables are almost ready, pan fry the marinated halloumi on a medium-high heat for a couple of minutes on each side, until golden, or air fry for 5 minutes at 160°C on each side.

6 Once everything is prepared, toss the couscous and then spoon onto a serving dish. Add the roasted cauliflower, chickpeas, red onion and rocket, and lay the halloumi on top. Crumble over the feta and then drizzle some honey, sriracha and balsamic over the dish.

Mediterranean Rice & Lentil Bowl

Serves 4-6

55 mins

Belén Vázquez says: “This dish is great for those who tend to skip lunch during workdays due to time constraints. It can be made in large quantities and kept in the fridge for a few days. It is particularly rich in plant fibre, folate, B6 and antioxidants.”

INGREDIENTS

• 200g butternut squash, cut into cubes

• 200g cauliflower, broken into small florets

• 2 tbsp olive oil

• 1 tbsp cumin seeds

• 2 tsp turmeric

• Salt and pepper, to taste

• 100g brazil nuts

• 200g brown rice

• 1 garlic clove, crushed

• 100g green lentils, dried

• 1 large red onion, chopped

• 200g pomegranate seeds

• Handful of fresh dill, chopped

• 200g feta, crumbled

For the salad dressing

• Juice of 1 large orange

• 2 tbsp pomegranate molasses

• 3 tbsp date paste or 2 tsp honey, syrup or date molasses

• Salt, to taste

METHOD

1 Heat the oven to 200°C/180°C fan/ gas mark 6 and line a baking tray with baking parchment.

2 Place the butternut squash and cauliflower on the baking tray and drizzle with the olive oil. Scatter on the cumin seeds, dust with turmeric, and season generously with salt and pepper. Use your hands to ensure that every piece is coated. Roast for 30-35 minutes until both cauliflower and butternut squash are tender. After 20 minutes, add the brazil nuts to roast with them. After the full 3035 minutes, remove from the oven and leave to cool down.

3 Once the vegetables are in the oven, brown the dry rice in a saucepan on the hob with the garlic in a little olive oil for 5 minutes. Cover with water, add salt, and leave to simmer. Then, in a separate pan with a lid, cover the lentils with water and bring to the boil. Leave both the rice and lentils to cook for 20-30 minutes until tender. When done, give them a quick rinse under cold water to bring them to room temperature and stop them from further cooking. This will allow them to stay tender but firm.

4 In a large bowl, toss the cooked rice and lentils; roasted cauliflower, butternut squash and brazil nuts; red onion, pomegranate and dill.

5 Combine the dressing ingredients in a bowl then pour over the tossed ingredients and mix well. Serve with the feta crumbled over the top.

“This recipe ticks all the health and wellbeing boxes”

Patrick's LowCarb Kedgere

Serves 4 25-40 mins

Patrick Holford says: “This recipe ticks all the boxes: high in omega-3 and vitamin B12, great for the brain; low GL [glycaemic load] so great for weight control; high in folate and other B vitamins so supports methylation, along with B12 in the mackerel; and high in antioxidants and polyphenols from the spices, black pepper, and veg.”

INGREDIENTS

• 60g wholegrain bulgur wheat, quinoa or brown rice – makes 180g cooked

• 2 eggs

• 2 tbsp mild or medium olive oil (not extra virgin), virgin rapeseed oil or coconut oil

• 1 garlic clove, crushed

• 1 large or 2 small onions, finely chopped

• 1⁄2-1 tsp ground smoked paprika or cayenne

• 1⁄2-1 tsp ground cumin

• 1⁄2-1 tsp ground turmeric

• 2 smoked mackerel fillets (approx. 275g)

• 100g frozen petit pois

• 200g tenderstem broccoli, cut in half

• 1 tbsp tahini

• Black pepper, to taste

• 4 tbsp flat leaf parsley, finely chopped

METHOD

1 Measure out three times as much water as bulgur, quinoa or brown basmati rice in a pan and bring it to the boil. Add the bulgur, quinoa or rice and simmer on a low heat for 8 minutes (bulgur), 13 minutes (quinoa)

or 35 minutes (brown rice), then drain any surplus water, if needed.

2 Meanwhile, hard boil the eggs in a pan of boiling water for 6 minutes then cool rapidly under the tap for a minute. Set aside to fully cool before peeling and slicing into quarters.

3 Heat the olive oil in a large saucepan and sweat the garlic and onion for a minute or so before adding the spices. Let them gently cook for a further few minutes, taking care not to let them burn, until the onions are soft and fragrant.

4 Break the smoked mackerel into small pieces and add to the saucepan, stirring them in.

5 Meanwhile, add the petit pois to boiling water and wait until the water is boiling again, then add the broccoli pieces. Once the peas float to the top, remove from the heat, drain, then add to the onion and mackerel.

6 Stir in the cooked grains until evenly coated and then add the hardboiled eggs.

7 Stir in the tahini to make it creamy and season with plenty of pepper. You won’t need any salt thanks to the salty smoked fish and the strength of the spices. Garnish with the parsley.

Why one particular plant is a wise choice for menopause this summer

As you mop your brow following no doubt another interrupted night’s sleep, it may come as little consolation to learn that many cultures believe that menopause should be celebrated as a new era in a woman’s life.

Menopause generally occurs between the ages of 45 and 55 but in some women it can begin much earlier. In others menopause begins as late as 65. For most women there are three phases: peri-menopause or menopause transition, where you still have periods but they may be heavier or lighter than usual; menopause, when ovarian function declines, oestrogen levels drop o and periods stop, and post-menopause, which o cially begins 12 months after your last period – although wait two years before assuming you’re o the hook.

Although every menopause is di erent, there are a number of remedies that can help smooth the transition into menopause and beyond – and right at the top of this list is sage. One of our oldest medicinal plants, sage appears to have a rebalancing e ect on the hypothalamus, which is an area of the brain responsible for sweat regulation.

When you go through menopause your ovaries produce less of the hormone oestrogen and this drop in oestrogen causes the hypothalamus to work extra hard to maintain hormone levels, upsetting its sweatregulating function. This causes sudden surges in temperature and the uncomfortable ‘hot flush’ you may experience.

Sage helps to correct sweat regulation and reduce hot flushes. Fresh sage tincture diluted in a little water three times daily can really help. Try Menosan Sage Drops or for extra oomph, Menoforce Sage tablets.

hormones or ‘phytoestrogens’ can also

They provide a concentrated dose of organically grown sage for relief of excessive sweating associated with menopausal hot flushes, including night sweats. Isoflavones, oestrogen-like plant hormones or ‘phytoestrogens’ can also help to reduce hot flushes by providing an additional hormone boost when oestrogen levels are low. They may also help with other symptoms of menopause such as fatigue and irritability.

Good food sources of soy isoflavones are foods made from fermented soya, such as natto, tempeh and miso, and in Japan, for example, where soya is a dietary staple, less than 25% of menopausal women are reported to su er with hot flushes.

Alternatively an isoflavone supplement can help. A.Vogel’s Menopause Support provides soy isoflavones, magnesium and hibiscus extract and can be used to help with all stages of menopause.

One final thing, if flushes and night sweats are a ecting your sleep, a quick audit of your sleeping quarters can help. The ideal temperature for a bedroom is between 16 and 18°C. If you are waking up in a bog of sweat then your bedroom may be too hot. Keep the blinds or curtains closed during the day, minimise the number of lightbulbs you have on as they can generate a surprising amount of heat – and ditch that high TOG duvet.

his hidden mews spot is home to a suprisingly spacious and high tech day spa, complete with a kids’ club, a wellness clinic with a focus on complementary medicine, a longevity lounge, a bio-hacking lab and a full thermal suite. I am here for the afternoon, and first up is my Intraceutical Oxygen Facial, which is a high-tech treatment designed for significant results. Using pressurised oxygen and low-weight hyaluronic acid, the treatment presses serums deep into the skin, promising to instantly plump fine lines and boosts elasticity. It’s a peculiar sensation accompanied by an unusual whirring noise (though not uncomfortable) and I emerge actually glowing. Then it’s upstairs for a lymphatic drainage treatment, which I imagined to be a massage. Instead, I am zipped into an inflating plastic suit from the chest down, and left to lie in peace for some time while the suit vibrates enthusiastically. This encourages the natural drainage of lymph, reducing swelling and improving circulation. It’s not unpleasant and afterwards I feel lighter and somehow taller. From there I spend a relaxing hour dawdling in the sauna, steam room and salt cave, where inhaling Himalayan salt is an aid to respiration and relaxation. Time seems to slip away in this luxurious retreat, and I forget that I’m minutes from busy Westbourne Grove. Thank you, Cloud Twelve.

DYNAMIC MOVES

Carly Glendinning tries a month of Reformer Pilates with royal-approved personal trainer, Aimee Long

After navigating IVF, pregnancy, and postpartum recovery in my thirties, I hit my forties determined to take back control of my fitness. So when I had the chance to try a FOLD Reformer bed at home, I jumped at the opportunity – and enlisted expert trainer Aimee Long to help elevate my workouts.

Aimee has trained celebrities and royalty, but her approach is refreshingly down-to-earth. She mixes Pilates, barre, strength

training, and HIIT to create workouts that challenge without breaking you. As a fellow busy mum, she also understands the need for e cient sessions – which was perfect for my schedule. We trained virtually twice a week for a month using the FOLD bed, hand weights, and Pilates accessories. Each session was a full-body burn. Aimee pushed me with combinations of dynamic Reformer moves – tricep dips, inner thigh pulses, roundthe-worlds – and floor-based cardio and strength work that had me breathless and sore

in the best way. She adjusted the plan as we went, helping me target ankle stability and core strength, while focusing on form over intensity. What stood out most was Aimee’s personalised, holistic approach. Rather than focusing on weight loss, she encouraged me to reframe my goals: to build strength, improve mobility, and challenge my body with purpose. At 42, I can honestly say I feel stronger and more connected to my body than ever before.

HEAT

Too hot to sleep? One expert o ers up her top tips to ensure quality shut eye

Sleeplessness has become one of society’s biggest problems. At any given time, up to 40% of adults and 50% of children in the UK are struggling with their sleep, a problem which is often made worse during the summer months when the warmer weather can make it harder to sleep. The ideal temperature for a bedroom is between 16 and 18°C. When your body is cool and rested, it triggers the production of melatonin, the sleeppromoting hormone. During the evening, your body temperature naturally drops, and as morning approaches it rises again, getting ready for the day. This is all part of the shutdown and repair process. If you are waking up in a bog of sweat then your bedroom may be too hot or you need to ditch that high TOG duvet.

Cool yourself down before going to bed with a lukewarm shower or bath. Resist the temptation to have an ice-cold shower as your body will just increase its core temperature to counter the e ect of the cold water. An ice cold shower will also wake you up. Dim the lights and keep those curtains closed. If you keep your blinds or curtains closed during the day, the temperature in your bedroom will drop. Minimise the number of lightbulbs you have on as they can generate a surprising amount of heat.

Choose natural fibres to sleep in and sheets over duvets to help increase airflow and circulation. And don’t lose the pjs –sleeping without any clothes on could make you even hotter. Pyjamas help to absorb sweat, allowing moisture to evaporate between your body and the bed sheets. Again choose loose fitting natural fibres over synthetic ones. Light cotton or silk pyjamas are best, as the fibres will draw moisture and heat away from your body. Keep your feet cool. Feet regulate body temperature. Even if you just poke your tootsies out from under the covers, by keeping your feet cool, you can help to keep the rest of your body cool. Bed socks are a definite no-no. Try not to eat too late and make your last meal of the day as light and as cold as possible. Your body uses less energy, and therefore generates less heat, to digest salads and fish.

Stay well hydrated throughout the day and into the evening, but resist the night-time tipple. Your liver creates heat in the process of detoxifying alcohol. Plus bear in mind that alcohol is actually a stimulant. Try a refreshing infusion made with cooling herbs instead.

Sleep in the coolest room. Heat rises, so if you have the option to sleep in a lower-altitude room in your house, do so, you’ll probably be cooler. If not, you could consider moving your mattress to the floor or even sleeping in a hammock.

Kick out your partner! Not the friendliest of suggestions, granted, but we humans generate a huge amount of heat, and more bodies in bed means more heat. Avoid sharing a bed on really warm nights if you can, and don’t share your sleeping quarters with any of your furry friends.

For some natural support to help you sleep better at any time of the year try A.Vogel’s Dormeasan Sleep. With fresh Valerian and Hops it can help you get to sleep and also stay in the deeper stages of sleep for longer. Take 30 drops in a little water half an hour before bedtime.

For a water-free solution that can be taken even in the middle of the night, there’s Sleep Well Dissolvable Granules, with extracts of Lettuce, Lemon Balm, Magnesium and L-Tryptophan. These plant-based ingredients work to promote a calm, restful sleep, are non-addictive and fast-acting, and won’t leave you feeling groggy in the morning.

‘Hamster-wheel’ mind that won’t switch o ? Passiflora Complex (drops, tablets or spray) taken during the day can help to calm mental overactivity and ease anxiety, which in turn helps promote a more restful night’s sleep. It can also be used alongside herbal sleep remedies if needed. Finally, fall in love with lavender. Lavender is a naturally cooling and sleep-supportive herb. Try spraying your pillow and bedding with lavender before bedtime, or dabbing a little lavender on your wrists, temples or neck.

LEADING

LIGHT

Absolutely meets Buckinghamshire-based Lucy Kuhar, founder of LuminArchitects and 2025 Women Leaders Awards winner, to discuss childhood, creativity and clarity

Q Where did you grow up and did you have a lot of opportunities to express your creativity?

A I grew up in Slovenia, surrounded by dramatic alpine landscapes and traditional architecture – a setting that naturally fuels a sense of design and place. My parents encouraged both creative and analytical pursuits, and I was always drawn to that intersection where beauty meets function. I loved playing the piano and attending painting classes, but I was just as enthusiastic about logic games, chess, and any kind of DIY project with my dad. It was a rich mix of the arts and problem-solving – a combination that still underpins my approach to design today.

Q When did a career in design become a serious consideration for you?

A It was during my teenage years that I realised architecture was the perfect outlet for both my creativity and love of logic. I was fascinated by the idea that spaces could shape emotions, relationships, and the way we live day to day. Once I made the connection between the built environment and wellbeing, there was no turning back. I never had a backup plan – I applied for a combined bachelor’s and master’s course in architecture, and was fortunate to be accepted. It’s a path I’ve followed with conviction ever since.

Q What was your route into the industry?

A After completing my master’s degree in architecture in Slovenia, I moved to London and worked for several high-profile practices on a mix of residential and large-scale mixed-use projects. I soaked up a lot – from fast-paced delivery on large schemes to the finer points of detail design for private homes. Eventually, I realised I wanted to bring more intention and soul into the projects I worked on, and that meant building something of my own.

Q When did you launch your own business and what inspired you to go it alone?

A I founded Lumin Architects in 2019. At the time, I was working in London and felt there was a gap in the industry for a studio that placed people and sustainability at the heart of the design process. I was increasingly drawn to how di erently people live, and how architecture should reflect the values, routines, and personalities of its users – not impose a one-size-fits-all solution. I wanted to create spaces that feel deeply personal, rooted in meaningful connections and thoughtful design. Lumin was born from the belief that architecture should be both beautiful and intentional – and that the journey should be just as considered as the outcome.

Q Do you o er anything di erent to other businesses?

A Lumin isn’t just about architecture – it’s about unlocking potential. We work with families and developers to help them see beyond the obvious. Our clients value design deeply, but they’re

also pragmatic. We balance ambition with constraints, and sustainability isn’t a buzzword for us – it’s the baseline. What sets us apart is how personal the process is. I often ask questions that help clients uncover thoughts or priorities they hadn’t consciously considered. By getting to know them and their lifestyle in detail, I’m able to guide them through the design journey with clarity – even when they come to the table with di ering opinions or conflicting ideas. It’s about alignment, not compromise, and creating spaces that feel truly theirs.

Q How do you like to start working on a new project?

A I start by listening. Every home, every site, every client has a story – and my job is to draw it out. Before putting pencil to paper, we explore their aspirations, budget, values, and lifestyle. I like to get to know the family – how they live day to day and throughout the seasons, what matters most to them, and what brings them joy or ease at home. From the very beginning, I also think

carefully about light, flow, and spatial hierarchy – even at the most conceptual stages. It’s this deep understanding of both people and place that forms the foundation of every design.

Q To date, what have been some of your stand out projects – from the brief, to the challenges, to what you love about the final design?

A Some of my favourite projects were the ones that felt “impossible” at first – tight sites, tricky planning, constrained budgets. One I’m especially proud of is a stables annexe conversion within a conservation area. The brief was to create a modern, self-su cient, sustainable home within a compact footprint, while respecting the heritage of the site. We’re still in early design stages, but it’s already a beautiful example of what happens when values and design align. In London, I also loved a family home renovation in Camden – a complete transformation that brought light and calm to a formerly dark, disconnected space.

Q When did you move to Buckinghamshire and what attracted you to the county?

A I moved to Buckinghamshire just before Covid hit, and before I was expecting my son. We got a dog soon after, and everything

started to shift toward a slower, more grounded pace of life. Buckinghamshire felt like the right balance: close enough to London, where my partner’s company is based, but with the space and calm that suited our growing family. There are definitely aspects of London I still miss, but I’ve come to really value the sense of community here, the access to nature, and the potential for thoughtful, design-led projects. It’s been a great place to rebuild and re-root the business.

Q How do you balance your business with family life?

A It’s a constant juggle – a careful dance between nursery days, naptimes, and evenings once my son’s asleep.

Working part-time has actually been a gift in disguise. It’s pushed me to step fully into the role of director, building systems, outsourcing where needed, and learning to run the business in a more strategic, sustainable way.

That said, I’m still very much involved in the creative direction. I lead the vision for each project, shape the design concepts, and bring the big ideas to the table.

The di erence is, I now have support in delivering the day-to-day tasks, so I can stay focused on the parts that matter

most – both to the business and to me. I also handpick each project to make sure it aligns with our core values, which allows the work to feel purposeful and personal.

Q What projects locally are you working on that really excite you?

A Right now, I’m working on a listed property near Towcester and a beautiful old stables annexe conversion within a conservation area. Both are heritage projects with modern aspirations – a combination I really enjoy. They o er the opportunity to breathe new life into existing structures, balancing sensitivity to the past with sustainable, future-focused design. Another exciting project is the renovation of a family home where the clients are used to much more space. It’s a creative challenge that requires us to be clever and intentional with how we optimise the existing layout – and I love that kind of problem-solving.

Q How do you see the future of your business evolving?

A I see Lumin becoming the go-to studio for families who want sustainable, soulful homes that truly stand the test of time. We also aim to be the studio that design-led developers turn to as a proactive, trustworthy partner - one that brings clarity, creativity, and care to every stage of the process. On the side, I’m also exploring a modular housing concept that reimagines how communities can live together – in a way that’s beautifully designed, e cient to build, and kinder to the planet. For me, the future of Lumin is about staying relatively small in size but big in impact, rooted in meaningful design and thoughtful innovation.

LUCY KUHAR

SPOTTERS TREND

At our recent visit to WOW!house 2025 at Chelsea Harbour, we discovered a wealth of design trends reflecting the contemporary pulse of interiors –where craftsmanship, sustainability, narrative, and sensory immersion converge across 22 exquisitely curated spaces. Here are the dominant themes and notable highlights shaping the conversation in 2025.

1. CRAFTSMANSHIP & QUALITY MATERIALS

A deference to expert craftsmanship permeated the show, with furniture and finishes deeply rooted in quality. Highlights included Tom Faulkner’s sculptural dining table, Sta an Tollgård’s bespoke study pieces, and period joinery by Atkey & Co for Shalini Misra’s entry – all embodying the kind of attention to detail that outlasts fleeting trends. Romanos Brihi and Venetia Rudebeck’s kitchen exemplified this ethos, blending marble, brass, oak, and plaster in a tactile symphony – anchored by Gaggenau appliances and antique pieces that give the space personality.

2. SUSTAINABILITY & REPURPOSE CULTURE

WOW!house 2025 layered its creative ambition with eco-conscious materials: modular façades made from 3D-printed bioplastics, flooring and fabric walls designed for reuse, and rehoming of furnishings post-show. This is a deliberate shift toward a circular creative economy.

3. ORGANIC COLOUR PALETTES & BOTANICALS

Natural hues dominated – from soft olives and earthy terracotta to deep forest tones. The verdant courtyard, garden terrace, and multiple rooms showcased lush greenery and wallpapers adorned with foliage motifs, reinforcing the biophilic resurgence across interiors.

4. TEXTURAL LAYERING & PATTERN PLAY

2025’s interiors asked visitors to linger through layered textures and patterns. From intricate wallpaper and fabric combinations (print-on-print) to ceiling treatments – think bamboo-clad or tented overhead drapery – the spaces encouraged a "layers rich in depth" aesthetic. We saw bold tongue-in-cheek stripes on terraces, verdant botanical prints, and tactile panelling that brought warmth and personality to refined spaces.

5. CEILING AS A FIFTH WALL

An unexpected co-star: ceilings. Whether painted, upholstered, clad in bamboo, or tented with fabric, they contributed significantly to ambience, marking a departure from the ubiquitous white ceiling and adding inviting intimacy to rooms.

6. ASYMMETRY & CURATED CLUTTER

There was a tangible shift away from perfectly symmetrical, 'matched' interiors. Designers like Kelly Hoppen and Ben Pentreath endorsed asymmetry and collected interiors – spaces

evolved over time with "quiet accumulation" of objects, art, and vintage layers, intentionally curated into rich vignettes.

7. TILE-DRENCHING FOR COHESION

This year’s embrace of tile drenching – floor-to-ceiling tiling using unified patterns – emerged as a refined trend. Ideal for compact bathrooms and kitchens, it’s a visually seamless way to unify a space while remaining customizable to palette and texture preferences.

8. NATURAL MATERIALS IN EVERYDAY APPLICATIONS

From limestone and terracotta garden paths to sisal, linen, rattan, and polished brass, natural materials were not mere accent items, but core players in creating earthy comfort. Adam Ellis’s tree-motif wall in the dining room and woolsisal flooring reinforced this familiar-but-elevating motif.

9. NOSTALGIC AND ARTS & CRAFTS INFLUENCES

Rooms like Chad Dorsey’s Arts & Crafts drawing room was anchored in British-American stylistic crossovers – floral wallpapers framed architecturally, rich handcrafted rugs, and folk references – highlighting the enduring appeal of tradition and nostalgia.

10. PURPOSEFUL ZONES & SOCIAL SETTINGS

Multiple spaces included intentional "social points" – from cocktail trolleys and tea trays to snug reading

“Tile drenching— floor-to-ceiling tiling using unified patterns— emerged as a refined trend”

nooks, dens, and media rooms. Toni Black’s Gathering Bar embraced this concept, showcasing the renewed value of dedicated spaces for social connection.

11. MULTISENSORY & STORY-DRIVEN EXPERIENCES

WOW!house feels like walking through a story, not merely a showcase. Beyond visuals, Jo Malone’s signature fragrances infused rooms, and narrative-driven pieces (such as Alessandra Branca’s "fairytale" bedroom or Victorian fabrics in smuggled skylit rooms) created immersive emotional layers.

12. HERITAGE ARCHITECTURE REIMAGINED

Externally, Adam Architecture’s Georgian-inspired façade and Darren Price’s Atkey & Co doorway set an evocative classical stage for the showhouse – a declarative gesture connecting context to crafted interiors.

IN BRIEF

THE WOW!HOUSE 2025 AESTHETIC

• Tactile Luxury – Artisanal materials and joinery define spaces beyond utilitarian plans.

• Mindful Design – Sustainability is woven into structure, literal and ethical.

• Warm, Wild Palettes – Organic hues, plant life, and natural textures dominate.

• Layered Depth – Patterns, fabrics, and ceiling treatments craft enveloping interiors.

• Curated Stories – Each room acts as a chapter: collectable, sensory, soulful.

For anyone seeking inspiration that balances the luxurious with the lived-in, the sustainable with the sumptuous, it’s a masterclass in creating deeply personal and enduring spaces.

Treasure TROVE

The Buckinghamshire home of broadcasting legend Sir Terry Wogan is now on the market. Absolutely takes a look around

The Buckinghamshire home of British broadcasting royalty and national treasure

Sir Terry Wogan is now available to buy. Hitcham Close in Taplow near Maidenhead is jointly listed with property agents Savills and Bovingdons for a guide price of £3,750,000.

Sir Terry and his wife, Lady Helen, bought the six-bedroom property in 1975. Described as an imposing arts and crafts country house set in exquisite gardens, the property provided a happy home for the couple and their family throughout 51 years of marriage.

Youngest son Mark says: “We’re a close family, so the kitchen was central to everything. Mum was a fantastic cook. Eating and talking around a table was a big part of growing up in the house.

“Even after we left home, you’d never go more than a couple of weeks without coming back for a weekend. The welcome was always warm and the food plentiful,” he smiles. “My parents were great hosts and had a close group of good friends that would regularly be over for dinners. We’d also have some lovely long lunches on the terrace in the summer overlooking mum’s beloved garden. It’s a thing of beauty.”

Sir Terry passed away in 2016 at the age of 77, while Lady Helen died last year aged 88. Between 1993 and his semi-retirement

“It will make a great place to raise a family”

in December 2009, Sir Terry’s BBC Radio 2 breakfast show drew in an average of eight million listeners. He started his career in the 1960s and worked on some of the biggest shows on TV, including long running BBC 1 chat show Wogan, presenting Children In Need and as a commentator for the Eurovision Song Contest

“People always assumed our house was full of famous people, but dad kept work and family very separate,” Mark continues. “It’s a family home in every sense and we have many happy memories. I’m particularly fond of the main drawing room. The views of the garden are very special, but there’s also a lovely wooden beam over the fireplace from an old sailing ship. It’s like a small theatre and growing up – much to everyone’s annoyance no doubt – I used to perform magic shows underneath it. We’ll miss the house very much. But it’ll make someone a great place to raise a family.”

Set behind wrought iron gates in 2.84 acres of grounds with far reaching views over the Thames Valley to Windsor Castle, Hitcham Close o ers more than 6,500 square feet of accommodation over three floors.

Opening into a grand double height entrance hall with a large staircase, rooms of note include a dining room, sitting room and drawing room with feature fireplace and exposed beams.

The kitchen is fitted with a range of units, while a central island provides a further work surface area and storage. A conservatory and a study complete the ground floor.

The first floor comprises four large double bedrooms – including the principal bedroom suite with built-in wardrobes, en-suite with bath and shower and access to a balcony. The other bedrooms are served by two family bathrooms.

The second floor has been converted into self-contained guest accommodation with two double bedrooms, a living room and separate guest kitchen.

The gardens include an all-weather tennis court, heated swimming pool and large private terraces alongside a croquet lawn and orchard. The remainder is laid to lawn with mature hedge and shrub borders, while the front of the property has space for plenty of parking and includes a three-vehicle garage.

Property agent Hugh Maconochie, director in the Country House Department at Savills, says: “Set in exquisite, landscaped

grounds within a quiet enclave, Hitcham Close is a wonderful family home that o ers plentiful accommodation with excellent access to London. The main reception rooms have a wealth of character and o er great flexibility to suit a variety of needs.”

Sam Burroughs, director within the residential sales team at Bovingdons, adds: “Taplow is a charming village surrounded by scenic Buckinghamshire countryside. Conveniently close to the M40 and M4 motorways as well as Heathrow Airport, there are regular rail connections into London via the Elizabeth Line, while there are also several highly regarded schools within the immediate area.”

TIMELESS QUALITY

Atkin & Thyme: unique, hand-crafted design for over a decade

Atkin & Thyme has spent over a decade creating furniture that goes beyond function – each piece is designed to tell a story, spark emotion, and bring character into the spaces we live in. The brand’s distinctive collections showcase a thoughtful blend of characterful marbles, hand-selected woods, and luxurious finishes, with a strong emphasis on quality craftsmanship and timeless materials.

From indoor/outdoor co ee tables to UK-made, made to order sofas, elegant bedframes, statement lighting and dining furniture, every design is created to suit modern lifestyles while adding charm and individuality to the home.

Much-loved pieces like the Calvin Armchair and the Flute Storage Collection – now available in three beautiful finishes:

black, natural, and vintage – have become icons within the range, combining style, practicality, and enduring appeal. This season, the collection embraces new colour and pattern directions in marble and concrete, alongside bold, playful shapes and tactile upholstery that invites touch.

Earlier this year, Atkin & Thyme took centre stage as the o cial Furniture Partner for Grand Designs Live, London, giving visitors the opportunity to experience its designs in person and appreciate the quality first-hand. The brand also celebrated recognition from the Ideal Home Awards, with the Brera Bedside Table – crafted from rich Emperador Italian marble – winning praise from both design enthusiasts and industry experts. The full Brera Collection continues to captivate with its refined detailing and sculptural lines.

The brand’s thoughtful approach extends outdoors, with a stylish alfresco

collection designed to elevate exterior living. Mandarin Stone: beautiful interiors with natural stone and porcelain

hen it comes to creating timeless, elegant interiors, the surfaces you choose play a defining role. From kitchen floors to bathroom walls, tiles are no longer a purely functional detail, they are a key element of your home’s design narrative.

Established over 35 years ago, Mandarin Stone has become one of the UK’s leading suppliers of natural stone, porcelain, and decorative tiles, with a reputation for quality, style and innovation. With 16 showrooms across the UK, the brand has become a go-to resource for homeowners, interior designers and architects alike.

At the heart of Mandarin Stone’s o ering is a carefully curated collection of materials, ranging from limestone, marble, and slate, to terrazzo, patterned tiles and large-format porcelain tiles. Whether you’re renovating a period townhouse or designing a sleek modern apartment, Mandarin Stone’s extensive range ensures there’s something to suit every aesthetic.

Natural stone remains a core part of their identity. Each is unique, o ering an organic texture and warmth that cannot be replicated. Their limestones and marbles come in a variety of finishes – from honed and polished to tumbled and brushed – allowing for both rustic and refined interiors. Stone’s durability also

“At the heart of the o ering is a carefully curated collection of materials”

makes it a long-term investment, adding value to your space as it ages gracefully over time.

The porcelain tile range includes hyperrealistic stone and wood-e ect tiles as well as bold, modern designs that bring colour and pattern into the home. Porcelain is favoured not only for its beauty, but also for its practicality – it’s low-maintenance, hardwearing, and ideal for underfloor heating systems.

What sets Mandarin Stone apart is their expertise and service. Each showroom is sta ed by knowledgeable consultants who can advise on everything from grout selection to laying patterns and technical requirements. Their website also o ers a wealth of inspiration, with room galleries, trend guides and sample ordering options to make the decision-making process seamless.

Sustainability is also increasingly central to the Mandarin Stone ethos. The company is committed to responsible sourcing, working only with suppliers who meet high standards for environmental and ethical practices. Their porcelain tiles are manufactured with low water usage and energy-e cient processes, and their natural stones are sourced with care to minimise environmental impact.

Ultimately, Mandarin Stone o ers more than just tiles, they o er a foundation for exceptional design.

Who says summer styling should stop at the garden? Cult

Furniture’s latest campaign, Summer is Served, makes a strong case for investing in the spaces we live in year-round with colour, character, and considered design leading the way.

Known for blending bold, high-end design with accessible price points, Cult’s collection captures the spirit of modern London homes: eclectic, expressive, and made to evolve with the people who live in them. And while their outdoor range might have already sold out, indoors is where the real story is unfolding.

From dining tables that demand attention to sculptural accent chairs and thoughtfully designed lighting, Summer is Served champions pieces that work

How to bring the heat indoors this season

hard without sacrificing style. There’s a sense of ease throughout the collection, soft curves, sumptuous textures, and a palette that moves confidently between retro warmth and contemporary calm.

Cult’s furniture doesn’t just fill a room, it shapes it. The dining collection blurs the lines between traditional formality and elevated everyday hosting, whether that’s a Sunday supper with friends or an impromptu pizza night around a table, statement marble anchors the room with the Toulouse, paired with tactile boucle seating in standout styles like the Halston or Hallie, or sleek chromeframed chairs, like the Kenton.

Living spaces are just as considered. There’s a real emphasis on materials that invite touch: walnut woods, velvet cushions, matte ceramics, and smoked glass. Accent chairs like the Erin in bold monochrome or the curved Ivy in olive, add design punctuation, while modular

co ee tables and playful accessories create a layered, lived-in feel.

Lighting, often the unsung hero of interiors, plays a starring role, with Cult’s latest pieces designed to shift the mood from morning co ee to evening unwind with the flick of a switch.

And the accessories? They’re anything but afterthoughts: sculptural vases, curved mirrors, and plush rugs that seamlessly add character.

With its confident mix of style and substance, Cult’s Summer is Served campaign reminds us that interiors should be fun, functional, and full of personality. It’s not about rules, it’s about creating a space that feels entirely your own.

How Corn Exchange Newbury and the Watermill Theatre are giving a platform to budding creatives of the future

Corn Exchange Newbury and the Watermill Theatre hosted Beyond the Stage in July, an inspiring event championing creative careers for young people through their joint Careers in the Arts programme, funded by Greenham Trust. From backstage secrets to centre-stage stories, young people were able to step into the spotlight of career possibilities within the arts sector as Beyond the Stage returned for its second year. This event is designed to open young minds to the wide opportunities within the creative industries. Building on the success of last year’s event at the Watermill Theatre, Beyond the Stage returned with an expanded programme

of hands-on workshops, an industry insight careers fair and the launch of a brand-new theatre company.

Taking place on 15th July, students in Years 8 to 12 from secondary schools, sixth forms and colleges across West Berkshire and North Hampshire delved into areas such as stage management, marketing, fundraising, access, outreach, and technical (sound and lighting), whilst panel talks from professionals at the Corn Exchange, the Watermill Theatre, and across the industry o ered insight into real-life career pathways and experiences. The workshops were led by a range of theatre professionals and included a playwriting workshop with Oxfordshirebased playwright and theatre director, Emelia Hutchinson. Complementing the workshops was a creative industriesfocused careers fair, where local businesses, freelancers, and education providers, including the University of Winchester, The Base Greenham, Resource Productions and Berkshire Film O ce shared opportunities and advice. The event is designed to help young people understand the wide range of opportunities available within the arts,

as well as the skills that can be developed through engagement with the sector; and to highlight that there is an opportunity for everyone in this diverse and exciting sector.

To end the day’s programme of events was a performance from Rusted Boot Productions, Family Ties, which was developed through the Creator Network. The Creator Network supports emerging creatives aged 18-25 as they take their first steps into the industry. Since November 2024, the inaugural group of four young people have met monthly and independently developed, written and directed this original piece as part of the Careers in the Arts project. The performance was followed by a Q&A with the Rusted Boot company to talk through their process and experience of being part of the Creator Network.

Jessica Jhundoo-Evans, Director of Corn Exchange Newbury, says: “It is fantastic to end our third year of this programme with the Beyond the Stage event. This was a great opportunity for young people to understand the range of skills that can be developed through engaging with the experiences available in the arts; skills that will benefit them

whichever path in life they choose to take, whilst also highlighting the range of career opportunities that exist within our sector and match a whole range of interests. It is really exciting to open young people’s eyes to all that arts can o er.”

Claire Murray, Executive Director of the Watermill Theatre, comments: “We feel it is paramount as an organisation to support young people and early career creatives in making their first steps into the industry. We were also excited to see a number of our regular youth theatre participants debut their new theatre company, Rusted Boot Productions, that they’ve developed under the Creator Network programme.”

Corn Exchange Newbury is a flagship arts centre for the South East and engages with over 130,000 people a year through its live events, extensive learning and participation work and free outdoor events. It presents a mixed programme of theatre, dance, comedy, music, film and family work in its 400-seat auditorium and 40 seat independent cinema.

The Watermill Theatre is a unique producing powerhouse of residential and artistic facilities which provide a crucible for creativity, innovative storytelling, and artistic excellence. The Watermill’s mission is to make theatre that is surprising, inventive, and exciting and to enable access for everyone. The theatre nurtures and celebrates talent and creativity in its company, community, and in the wider sector and it holds wellbeing, equity, and sustainability at the heart of its culture.

EGiving a VOICE

The 15th Festival of Education at Wellington College featured a host of inspiring voices, finishing with one of our finest actors
“THERE IS STILL PLENTY OF WORK TO DO"

ducation gave me the chance to imagine a bigger life, then gave me the tools to go and build it. But I also know what it feels like to sit at the back of the class and not see yourself in the books, the teachers, or the future you’re told to aim for. We’ve come a long way, but there’s still work to do…” The inspiring words of award winning actor and comedian, Sir Lenny Henry, who closed this year’s Festival of Education held at Wellington College in Berkshire.

In a reflective and wide-ranging conversation, Sir Lenny explored how education has shaped his own life and why it remains one of the most important levers for change. Drawing on his personal experiences growing up in the West Midlands, and the challenges he faced navigating systems that weren’t built with equity in mind, he spoke candidly about the importance of identity, representation and belonging in learning environments.

The 15th Festival of Education was held on 3rd and 4th July, and the event is dedicated to inspiring and empowering educators from all sectors and providing an inclusive platform for sharing innovative ideas, fostering meaningful discussions, and promoting professional growth in a vibrant, relaxed atmosphere.

This year’s Festival featured two inspiring days packed with thought-provoking sessions, interactive workshops, and powerful keynotes, all designed to spark ideas and support professional development across the education sector. With over 250 sessions across the two days, the agenda reflected the diversity, challenges, and opportunities facing educators today.

As one of Britain’s most recognisable and respected public figures, Sir Lenny has forged a remarkable career as a comedian, actor, writer, and campaigner. He is also the co-founder of Comic Relief, which since 1985 has raised over £1 billion to tackle poverty and inequality in the UK and around the world. His lifelong commitment to challenging injustice and championing opportunity has made him a powerful voice across a range of sectors, including education.

His fireside chat o ered a unique opportunity to hear directly from Sir Lenny as he shared his perspective on how education can be made more inclusive, more creative, and more purposeful for every learner. It was a powerful and personal session, bringing warmth, humour, and wisdom to the festival’s closing moments.

St George’s School Windsor Castle has been shortlisted for a prestigious national award

St George’s School Windsor Castle, an award-winning school for children aged three to 13, has been shortlisted in the category of Independent Prep School of the Year at the 2025 Independent Schools of the Year Awards. Recognised by the awarding body for the fourth consecutive year, the school’s shortlisting this year focuses on an exciting project undertaken by the school’s students to bring their learning goals to life.

Each class from Years 2 to 6 worked collaboratively to create a character which embodied one of the ten skills acquired through the school’s pioneering International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum. In addition to visualising and naming their character, they were tasked with describing how they might think and act. The resulting drawings were then given to a professional illustrator,

who created a family of characters inspired entirely by the children’s work.

“These characters – created for children, by children – have brought the students a far deeper understanding of the attributes vital for later life success which we prioritise developing at St George’s,” comments Emma Adriano, IB curriculum lead at the school. “Learner-centred, collaborative, hands-on and action-oriented, the journey of creating the new characters also perfectly embodies the school’s ethos and IB spirit.”

In addition to deep subject knowledge, the International Baccalaureate places significant emphasis on students acquiring a range of skills which both prepare them for life beyond school, as well as instil the value of becoming a responsible member of global society. These include becoming reflective, caring, open-minded, balanced and comfortable taking risks.

In line with the school’s vision for students to be ‘Real World Ready’, this development

of the whole child prepares students not only for the next phase in their educational journey, but also for the wider world beyond. An approach clearly appreciated by parents as 100 per cent of those surveyed during the school’s most recent inspection agreed that “the school equips my child with the team working, collaborative and research skills they need in later life”.

The schools shortlisted in the 2025 Independent Schools of the Year Awards will now be subjected to a further round of judging before the winners are announced in October.

“With a record number of entries received, it has been harder than ever to reach a decision on which schools to shortlist,” said award organisers Independent School Parent magazine, in a statement on their website. “Independent schools across the world, it is clear, are working harder than ever to ensure that their students – and the whole community – will develop into well-rounded global citizens who are able to make the most of their own skills, in order to contribute positively to humanity.”

Further information about St George’s School Windsor Castle can be found at stgwindsor.org or by registering for the school’s next open morning, which will be held on Saturday 4th October

Boarding life at Marymount International School London – the pupils' view

B“A place filled with laughter, support, and global friendships”

organising themed movie nights or dance nights, cheering each other on through exams, or simply being there for one another, the spirit of community is constant and real.

Boarding at Marymount has shaped who I am. It’s taught me how to lead with empathy, live with openness, and celebrate the strength in our di erences.

Yashvi, High School Student

oarding at Marymount is more than just living away from home; it’s about finding a new home in a place filled with laughter, support, and global friendships. As an Indian student and the current Boarding Council President, I’ve come to see boarding not just as a place to stay, but as a space that helps you grow into yourself and into a community. From the moment you step onto campus, there’s a sense of welcome in the air.

Whether it’s the comforting smiles of the boarding sta , late-night conversations in the lounges, or the joy of celebrating Holi alongside Christmas and Lunar New Year, Marymount boarding is where di erent cultures don’t just meet, we connect.

The diversity of the boarding community makes every dinner table conversation an opportunity to learn something new. What stands out most to me is how supported I’ve always felt by houseparents who genuinely care and by friends who have become family. Whether we are

That spirit of connection and shared joy continues daily on campus. The following is a glimpse into a Year 7 day in the life: I wake up at 7am when the alarms start ringing down the corridor. I get dressed quickly, still yawning, and head down for breakfast. The dining hall is filled with people laughing, swapping toast, and trying to look alive.

At 8.20, we walk to school. I go with my friends, and we’re in a rush because someone’s shoes have disappeared again – oops! Classes are usually fun, my favourites are drama and dance. In drama, we do improv games that make everyone crack up. In dance, we learn routines that make Mondays come alive. My teachers are strict but funny, and they totally get us.

Lunch is noisy and full of energy. Everyone rushes to get their food and find a table. It’s great because we sit with our friends, chill out and share random stories. Then we head to our afternoon classes. After school finishes at 4pm, I might go to rehearsal, dance club, or just relax on the lawns with friends.

Dinner is at 6, then we have study time. Prep is not my favourite thing, but it feels good to get it done. At 8pm we get snacks, hand in tech at 9, and by 9.30 we’re in bed – whispering and laughing, tired but ready for the week to come.
