ABSOLUTELY’S July issue highlights
Summer for me has always meant the outdoors in some form or the other. There were our family holidays to Cornwall, which despite the drive were always eagerly anticipated; when back home, the longer days meant more time in the park playing football. I never wanted to leave.
As I got a little older, it became a time of festivals. I still remember as a 16-year-old going to my first ever overnight festival down in Winchester, but falling asleep in a banging dance tent at 4am affected my street cred. Then, a year later, I was one of the lucky ones to see Oasis at Knebworth (it's amazing how many people say they were there – but I really was). Although, oddly, I do remember how digusting the toilets were as much as the music. Those were the days.
I am a little older now, but that hasn't stopped a love for a summer festival, I just look for a more sedate pace. So, inside this issue, we present a mini summer special looking at some of the best ways to spend a day in the sun across Essex, from the top festivals with the big headliners coming to the county, to some family friendly fun thrown in too (as all my friends now have kids). Bring it on (just a little more quietly).

The Stage, a landmark mixed-use development in the heart of Shoreditch, welcomes a pop up from the acclaimed multidisciplinary artist Gary James McQueen – nephew and former collaborator of iconic fashion designer Alexander McQueen.
Open now, visitors will be able to view new and exclusive lenticular artworks alongside best sellers from Gary James McQueen’s catalogue, each blending digital cra smanship with deeply personal narratives, exploring the beauty found within darkness and transformation. The pop-up invites visitors into McQueen’s immersive, dreamlike world and showcases one of the artist’s major series: Talisman Skulls, inspired by Tibetan beliefs. The artist transforms the skull, o en a symbol of mortality, into one of luck, memory, and resilience. Four new versions of the Kintsugi skull will be on display for the first time prior to their release later this year. Alongside these works, the gallery will feature works including Savage Beauty, Eternal Bloom and Flayed Angel.
A protégé of his late uncle Lee Alexander McQueen, Gary’s creative foundation is built on bold storytelling, avant-garde aesthetics, and cinematic inspiration. Their shared love of fantasy and horror – from An American Werewolf in London to Legend – continues to inform the visual language in Gary’s work. This Shoreditch pop-up marks another major milestone in McQueen’s career, offering audiences a rare opportunity to experience his visionary practice up close. thestageshoreditch.com
Opening our summer events special, Chelmsford DJ Leanne Louise on her musical journey, festival highlights and playing to kids
If you are looking for a musical artist who has become something of a chameleon, look no further than Leanne Louise. The multifaceted artist from Chelmsford has carved a distinctive niche in the UK’s music scene as a singer, songwriter, DJ, and radio presenter. Her journey has taken her from local performances in front of 10 people (which she discusses later) to national recognition, showing a versatility that has won over many.
And you don’t get much more versatile than playing to a festival for kids (of sorts). Leanne is set to headline the Southend stop of Raver Tots’ biggest-ever family-friendly summer festival tour later in August, with more dates beforehand this month, which comes o the back of her debut live show on BBC Radio 1 earlier this year. It’s been quite a harmonious journey, which she tells us more about here.
Q Was there a particular moment when you thought music was going to be a career for you?
A I always knew from a young age that I wanted to sing and make it my career, but at 16 when I left school, I spent all of my time pestering anyone I could for opportunities and I’ve never stopped since
then, if I’m being honest. I’ve always been delusional enough to believe I’d do it. But I’d say a turning point for me was during lockdown. I started to build a following from live streaming and posting UKG mash ups including some of my favourite songs, people seemed to really enjoy them. I think for me that really solidified what I was doing and gave me some incredible opportunities that I wouldn’t have had without them.
Q Do you remember your first ever live performance – and how did it go?
A I remember the first time I sang in public. It was at an open mic night in a little pub called The White Swan in Bicknacre. I stood frozen to the spot and sang to probably no more than 10 people, but it meant the world to me. I was petrified, but loved it at the same time. Following that, I went to as many open mic nights as possible to network and meet people in music.
Q How do you look back on your album, 222?
A It’s funny because the album 222 never came out, but in true Leanne style, I held an album launch before it was ready for release. I had no idea what I was doing at that point
in my career. I was just a baby! But I am still proud of the tracks that I wrote back then.
Q How do you think your sound has evolved since then?
A Oh my sound is completely di erent! I think my sound is forever evolving and changing simply because I just love all genres of music. I do a lot more dance music now, though compared to back then when it was mainly Pop (think Lily Allen and Kate Nash).
Q You have collaborated with some great names – any stand out for whatever reason?
A Quite early on in my career, I got to play a few shows with Alexander O’Neal, which was incredible because he was someone my mum played a lot growing up. And more recently, I got to collaborate with General Levy. He’s a very talented artist and has such a great energy. I love working with him. Another artist who has the best energy is MC Neat, I loved collaborating with him and always love performing alongside him at shows.
Q Were you always looking to DJ and get into radio too?
A Actually, no. I think DJing was something I kind of wanted to give a go, but it always
looked too di cult so I never gave it much thought until my manager and partner Danny Blaze (who’s an amazing DJ) mentioned it, and I said “Well… Let’s do it then.” He taught me to DJ in 2021, and it’s one of the best things I’ve ever done, which then led to me getting my own radio show on Flex FM. Again… I never saw myself getting into presenting, but I absolutely love it! I love playing and talking about new music, I love connecting with people through music, and it’s another way for me to do just that. I love it so much.
Q How did it feel to first host BBC Radio 1’s Dance Anthems last year?
A It sounds cheesy, but it was a dream come true. Radio 1 is the pinnacle, isn’t it? I have dreamt of being in front of one of those Radio 1 microphones my whole career and to be let loose in the BBC was so exciting! I can retire a happy Leanne. I can’t thank Aled Jones and the whole Radio 1 team enough for trusting me to cover for Charlie Hedges, who is one of my favourite presenters. Dance Anthems is my favourite show on the station and has been since Mista Jamie hosted it.
Q What was the idea behind Leanne’s House Party?
A The original idea was to make it an online live stream and stream it from my actual house, but at the time I had terrible neighbours! So instead I made it a segment on my radio show. O the back of that my partner Daniel and I decided to do some free shows under the name ‘Leanne’s House Party’ to say thank you to the listeners, and the response was huge, so we decided to keep it going. My main priority is that people can be themselves and just have a great time. We had General Levy as a special guest at last year’s London show, and we had DJ Luck and MC Neat as the special guests at this year’s London show on the 28th June.
Q You have played and performed at some great festivals. Which have been highlights for you?
A Raver Tots is a big one, but aside from that I’ve been fortunate enough to play some amazing festivals. I love Boomtown, it’s an experience like no other. It’s not just about the music, there’s lots of street actors and unique experiences to get involved with too. I also play another festival called Beetlejuiced. I headlined the first ever festival they held and I’ve played there every year since. Can’t praise them enough, it’s a lovely festival! I’ve played Glastonbury too which was a bucket list moment for sure.
Q Which brings us to Raver Tots – why keen to be involved in the festival?
A As a child I always remember looking at the performers on stage and being so inspired because I wanted to be a singer. And for me that’s why I love being involved with Raver Tots, it’s a chance to inspire the next generation, show them that you really can achieve your dreams. Also I think that introducing kids to ‘raving’ in a safe space is super important.
Q How does family life fit into your career?
A It’s definitely not an easy balance to get with most shows being on weekends, but I’m gradually finding more of a balance. Especially now with doing Raver Tots I’m able to bring my son to more shows with me which is amazing, he can get involved with little jobs there like the balloon drops, confetti cannons and sparklers which helps keep him busy while I’m on stage. But it’s not always possible as he’s autistic and can struggle with crowds.
Q Do you often get a chance to enjoy what Chelmsford and Essex has to o er?
A Occasionally I do. There are some amazing things to do in Essex. When I have time o , me
and my son like going to the farm or bowling! Within Chelmsford, I love Hylands Park. It’s one of my favourite places to go for a walk.
Q What comes next for you?
A I feel very grateful to have some amazing things lined up. In terms of shows… I’ve been given the opportunity to DJ on top of the O2 Arena for ‘Up At The O2’ in July, which feels very surreal as I’ll be one of the only people in the world to DJ there. Crazy. I also have Leanne’s House Party, which is being held at Stormzy’s House Party in London, as well as making my debut in Ibiza. I’ve never been there before so I’m super excited. And lots of amazing Raver Tots festivals dotted all over the country too, which I can’t wait for. With music releases, I have lots of amazing collaborations this year and some solo tracks too. I’ve been working on a body of music for a good few years now so I’m excited to get them out into the world.

Chelmsford, it seems, is the place to be this summer judging by a new festival heading to the city and featuring some of the industry’s biggest names
Chelmsford City Live is a major new music festival in Essex, from 4th-6th July, headlined by global superstars and awardwinning musicians. The festival will take place at Chelmsford City Racecourse, the home of horseracing and major events in Essex.
Megastar Justin Timberlake will headline on Friday 4th July, Pop legends Duran Duran are bringing their sound that defined the 80s to Chelmsford on Saturday 5th July, while local Essex boy Olly Murs will headline his biggest homecoming show there on Sunday 6th July. Over the weekend expect to see other top notch acts like Blue, CTRL, Dagny, JC Stewart, Jess Glynne, Lemar, Nile Rodgers, and another Essex
lad, Mark Wright, performing a DJ set. This is a festival that clearly means business, which the man behind it all – Ben Hatton – agrees wholeheartedly with.
Q When was the idea of bringing a festival to Chelmsford first discussed?
A The idea first came about a couple of years ago. We’ve always felt Chelmsford was crying out for a major music event again – something that could capture people’s imagination and bring world-class talent back to Essex. It started as a few conversations about what could be possible, and quickly gained momentum.
Q When did you start planning the first line-up and did you have an idea of the kind of acts you wanted involved?
A We started planning the line-up in earnest over a year ago. From the outset, we wanted a real mix – global icons, legendary names,
and artists who mean something special to the Essex crowd. We weren’t interested in just throwing names together – it had to be a curated experience, something with real variety and a strong identity across each day.
Q Why was Chelmsford City Racecourse the perfect location?
A It’s a stunning site – spacious, well-connected, and already set up for large-scale events. But more than that, there’s a real sense of heritage here. Chelmsford has a proud history of hosting major music events, and the racecourse gives us the ideal canvas to create something special for a new generation.
Q You open with a bona-fide global superstar in Justin Timberlake. How happy are you to have him headlining?
A Honestly, it’s a dream come true. Having
Justin Timberlake open the festival is a huge statement of intent – it sets the bar incredibly high and tells people we’re serious about delivering something unforgettable. He’s one of the best live performers on the planet and we can’t wait to welcome him to Chelmsford.
Q Who else is on the bill on the 4th?
A We have the amazing Jess Glynne, who is an incredible female artist and will be a perfect guest ahead of Justin’s headline performance, as well as Norwegian singer-songwriter Dagny, and four-piece collective CTRL will open the night. It’s going to be a real pop spectacular.
Q Then we go back to the 80s with Duran Duran on the Saturday. What will they bring to the festival?
A Duran Duran are the ultimate festival band – hit after hit, pure showmanship, and that nostalgic energy that gets everyone on their feet. They’ve been on our wish list from the start and we’re thrilled to have them headline Saturday.
Q Nile Rodgers is an equally big name on the same day. What kind of vibe are you looking at for the Saturday?
A Saturday is all about feel-good anthems, glitter, dancing, and a bit of glamour. With Nile Rodgers & CHIC on the bill alongside Duran Duran, we’re creating a full-blown celebration – a night of iconic music that spans generations and gets everyone singing and smiling.
Q Then we have Olly Murs’ homecoming on the 6th – does that add a nice little touch to the event?
A Absolutely – Olly’s return is a real highlight. He’s Essex through and through, and this will be a proper homecoming. There’s going to be a lot of local pride in the crowd that night, and we know he’ll rise to the occasion. It’s going to be emotional in the best possible way.
Q Are you looking forward to seeing any of the acts in particular?
A Honestly, all of them! But there’s something special about seeing Justin Timberlake take the stage, and Olly’s set is going to be one of those goosebump moments. I also can’t wait for Nile Rodgers – he always brings the party.
Q As an Essex local yourself, how does it feel to be involved in staging this festival?
A It means everything. I grew up here, and to be able to help bring something like this to Essex is a real full-circle moment. There’s so much pride in this project – for the county, for the people, and for live music. I just can’t wait to see everyone enjoying it.

Marilena Ungureanu, Head
Chef at The Brasserie, Sopwell House, on the restaurant’s revamped look and revitalised menu
The Brasserie at Sopwell House is back as the Hertfordshire restaurant has reopened its doors following a refurbishment, complete with a vibrant new menu. Executive Chef Gopi Chandran and Brasserie Head Chef Marilena Ungureanu have taken great care in curating a reimagined menu packed with creativity and flavour. With a passion for local, quality ingredients, The Brasserie’s menus
are a celebration of comforting British classics featuring elevated twists. E ortlessly executed to make each ingredient sing, new signature starters include Chicken liver parfait served with apple and blackberry chutney and toasted brioche; Baked scallops served in the shell with a bacon crumble and garlic parsley butter; and Goats’ cheese croquettes with roasted red pepper sauce. Must-try mains include Cornish cod with crushed sweet garden peas, shaved fennel and dill; a Braised lamb shoulder pie in a red wine jus; and the ever-popular Slow cooked beef cheeks with mashed potato and red wine sauce.
From the grill, indulge in 28-day dry aged Hereford prime steaks, from fillet to sirloin on the bone, cooked to perfection and accompanied by fries and choice of sauce. For a true showstopper, share the 900g rib of beef, cooked on the Mibrasa charcoal grill to lock in maximum flavour.
Sundays are all about the roast with a selection of premium cuts available, from the 28-day aged Angus striploin of beef, to a Gloucester Old Spot pork belly. Every plate is
served with an abundance of crispy-on-theoutside, flu y on-the-inside roasties, along with seasonal mixed vegetables, Yorkshire puddings and a generous helping of gravy. Absolutely took a trip to Sopwell House to meet Marilena Ungureanu and uncover the thinking behind the new look and why we should be excited about the new menu.
Q Can you sum up The Brasserie’s new look?
A The new Brasserie look is classic but still elevated, comfortable and light. Decorated with taste and with love, the space provides the perfect spot for dinner with friends and groups, while discreet nooks and smaller tables set the mood for intimate date nights.
Q What design touches do you like the most?
A As you walk in, you will be greeted by light from the sun which floods the room, complementing the tones of blue and amber of the furniture, which I think is really lovely and inviting. I also like how some of the tables resemble the marble mountain you can find in Northern Italy.
Q Is it exciting when you sit down to prepare a new menu?
A Developing and devising recipes and drafts of the menu is indeed exciting. You can see the process and hard work come to life from the start and ideation before seeing the finished product when it goes to print. I like to draw the plating process, using my imagination and creativity, usually at home on the floor surrounded by books and all of my notes.
Q With The Brasserie’s new menu, what did you want to o er?
A We wanted to o er to guests a culinary journey and quality experience of British cuisine, with a tiny touch of contemporaneity, inspired by day-to-day trends. We serve familiar and well executed comfort food as well as light and healthy dishes as well as nostalgic and classic plates.
Q Is summer a wonderful time for produce?
A Spring is a great time with lovely ingredients, but for really good produce, early summer is my favourite, as you can combine both spring and summer and create really stunning dishes.
Q Are there 2-3 dishes on the menu you are particularly excited about introducing?
A Beef cheeks are part of my own childhood, and my absolute favourite comfort food. I would also recommend trying the Goat’s cheese croquettes with roasted red pepper sauce and the beautifully presented baked scallops with bacon crumble.
Q Anything else special planned this year?
A This year we are going back to school, with a management development programme for chefs, creating new dishes and having more people coming in, tasting our food and becoming part of the Sopwell family.

Bewl Water’s medal-winning Bacchus
Just in time for summer sipping, Bewl Water Vineyard in East Sussex has released its highly anticipated Old Vine Bacchus 2023 - and it’s already winning fans (and medals!). Made from vines planted back in the 1970s and lovingly hand-harvested, this wine is proof that age brings elegance. Expect bright elderflower, citrus peel, ripe peach, and a burst of gooseberry, with a crisp, zippy finish that is classic English Bacchus at its absolute best.
Nestled above the largest reservoir in the southeast, Bewl Water’s vines enjoy a unique microclimate shaped by cooling breezes and sunny slopes. It’s a postcard-perfect setting - and clearly one that does wonders for the grapes, yielding wines of exceptional character and vibrancy.
It’s no surprise this release has already taken home a Gold medal at the 2025 London Tasting Awards and a Silver at the prestigious London Wine Competition. Want in? Use code ABSOLUTELY25 for 25% o a case of six. Because sometimes, the best discoveries are the ones closest to home.

he main drawback, for me, in having a pedicure is the flipflop situation. Sure, there are possibly two months in the course of the year during which I’m comfortable wearing flipflops in London – but there are no guarantees. So a pedicure in winter is not an option to me, at least it wasn’t until I discovered the at-home treatment. And for an all-round foot health treatment, Elim’s medical pedicure is a cut above most treatments. In fact, Elim says that 98 per cent of their clients would recommend their treatments to a friend, which is a strong claim. Elim’s speciality is a treatment based on advanced podiatry techniques. Unlike traditional pedicures, it uses medical-grade products, featuring a chemical peel that removes dead skin and softens calluses without abrasive filing, followed by a deep cleanse, nail care, and moisturizing using active ingredients like AHAs and vitaminrich creams.
My therapist Khristine turns up fully equipped and I install myself on the sofa. Unphased by our enthusiastic kitten, she liberates my feet from several layers of dead skin (“it’s so satisfying,” she says) and addresses all of the hard bits before filing my nails and painting them a fetching shade of orange. And she’s done in almost exactly an hour, leaving my nails to dry in the comfort of my house. No flipflops required.

JO LAMBELL
With over a decade in business, Jo Lambell has made Beards & Daisies a go-to for those looking to brighten their homes. Here is how she did it
Eleven years ago, Jo Lambell made the bold decision to take voluntary redundancy from a corporate career. Rather than stepping back into the corporate world, she chose to pursue a business idea of her own, one that blended her love of gifting, plants, and celebrating special moments. While Jo brought plenty of transferable business skills from her corporate career, she had no formal training in floristry or horticulture. Determined to change that, she enrolled in a yearlong floristry course, studying while launching the business. She sold her house to make it happen, using the proceeds to launch Beards & Daisies.
The seed for her business was planted during a seemingly ordinary moment when Jo tried to send flowers to her mum, but couldn’t find a brand that combined beautiful blooms with a thoughtful gifting experience. Having moved from
the North East to London at 18, sending gifts by post had become second nature, especially with family spread across the country. Yet time and time again, online gifting missed the mark, impersonal, delayed, or just not quite right. Jo thought, ‘there has to be a better way to do this’.
At the same time, living on London’s iconic Columbia Road Flower Market gave Jo a front-row view of people struggling to transport towering plants on busy public transport, a scene that only reinforced her belief that there had to be a better solution.
The early days of Beards & Daisies were tough. Jo started small, focusing on flower gifting. The letterbox flower market quickly became crowded, and it was di cult to stand out. “It was a saturated market, and carving out our own space took time and persistence,” Jo reflects.
Behind the scenes, Jo was going all in. At one point, she juggled six jobs, from floristry
“Resilience became my superpower. I lived and breathed this business”
gigs at weddings and funerals to retail and nannying. “Resilience became my superpower,” she says. “I lived and breathed this business.”
in full-page adverts in national newspapers, the results started to pay o . Highlights included her bouquets on the front cover of lifestyle magazines to a major YouTuber with over a million followers generously sharing a video about the brand, generating hundreds of orders overnight.
That same year, Gardeners’ World featured a rare houseplant that only B&D stocked in the UK. The response was overwhelming, it crashed the website and the plant sold out within the hour, following a surge of thousands of visits.
But the real breakthrough came during the COVID years, when the brand experienced unprecedented growth, growing sales by £4 million in just one year and the team from 4 to 65 passionate employees.
One of Jo’s standout career moments came in 2023, when she was invited to speak at the House of Lords as part of a Select Committee on horticulture, representing the UK houseplant industry. Addressing the impact of Brexit on the sector, she described it as a true career high, an opportunity to give voice to the challenges and opportunities facing the industry she’s helped shape. She also authored a book, further cementing her role as a leading figure in the world of indoor plants.
“I am lucky to work with the most incredible bunch of women and men who are so talented”
Hiring her first employee, Alice, who also came from a corporate background was a turning point, bringing another person into the business to support Jo with the growth.
Things started to change when Jo introduced houseplants to the range. She began with just ten plants, not expecting the response. “Unlike bouquets, I was surprised to find that people were buying multiple plants for themselves and with each plant was an opportunity to sell a decorative pot – it was a homeware purchase and not just a gift anymore.”
Houseplants were such a success that within only 12 months of launching, Beards & Daisies had pivoted from flowers and became one of the few houseplant retailers at the time to send plants nationwide.
Jo also credits good, old-fashioned hustle for getting Beards & Daisies o the ground. In 2019, pre-COVID, the business started to gain momentum. Having pitched relentlessly, built genuine relationships with journalists, and invested
Jo, now based in Essex, is passionate about encouraging young people, especially women, to chase their business dreams without waiting for the perfect moment. “It doesn’t exist,” she says. “You have to be absolutely obsessed with what you’re building. Setbacks will happen, but they’ll make you stronger. Resilience is everything.
“I’m lucky to work with the most incredible bunch of women and men who are so passionate and talented at what they do,” Jo adds. “Being based in Essex, a place brimming with creativity and so close to London’s vibrant creative scene, has helped us attract an amazing team. The team, who we call Plant Folk, are deeply invested in Beards & Daisies’ success and share our bold, ambitious vision.”
Jo draws constant inspiration from other entrepreneurs, especially strong, female founders. Holly Tucker, Grace Beverley, and Jo Malone are among her favourites, along with Ben Francis of Gymshark, whose journey reminds her to keep pushing forward, even when the path is tough.

Once upon a time, the typical British garden was a place that didn’t ask for much more than a weekly mow and an occasional barbecue – weather permitting, of course. Today, however, the garden is becoming a genuine extension of the home, and at the centre of this shift is the rise of the outdoor kitchen.
More and more Essex homeowners are realising that an outdoor kitchen isn’t just a staple for those living around the Mediterranean, and neither is it about plonking a barbecue on the patio. The modern outdoor kitchen features highperformance grills, smart storage, durable worktops and even refrigeration. It is a space designed for living as much as for cooking.
As Stuart Dantzic, Managing Director at Caribbean Blinds, explains: “Our clients want to use their gardens all year round. That means creating a destination where people can gather, prepare food and enjoy time together, whatever the weather.”
Caribbean Blinds has recently joined forces with Grillo, the UK’s leading outdoor kitchen brand, to launch the Grillo Pergola. This coordinated outdoor setup brings together Grillo’s weatherproof kitchens with a specially designed version of Caribbean Blinds’ premium pergola, finished in Grillo’s signature deep black. The result is a fully integrated garden space that is practical and visually striking.
Built from high-grade aluminium, the pergola features an adjustable louvered roof that can be tilted to any angle, allowing users to control sunlight, airflow and shelter. This level of flexibility is essential when it comes to cooking outdoors. “Charcoal cooking in particular produces a significant amount of smoke,” says Stuart. “With our pergola, you can allow that smoke to escape while keeping the area protected from wind or rain. It is about comfort as well as performance.”
Grillo’s kitchens, made from marine-grade metal and iroko hardwood, are equally built to last. Their robust design pairs e ortlessly with Caribbean Blinds’ pergola, giving homeowners a cohesive and durable solution. According to Douglas Donald, Managing
Director at Grillo, this combination reflects a wider trend. “People are turning back to simpler, more soulful ways of cooking, involving a real fire, honest ingredients and shared experiences. It is not about flashy equipment. It is about joy, and bringing people together in a way that is relaxed and authentic.”
This emphasis on connection is key. No longer tucked into a corner of the garden, these spaces are being designed as central features. With integrated lighting, heating and optional side screens, the pergola creates a comfortable and inviting setting from morning co ee to late evening dinners. Guests can stay warm and dry, even if the weather turns.
“Homeowners are beginning to view these spaces as multi-functional outdoor rooms,” Stuart adds. “They want the same experience as an indoor kitchen diner, but surrounded by nature. With the modular nature of our pergolas and Grillo’s kitchens, each project can be tailored to suit the exact layout and lifestyle of the client. Whether it is a compact terrace or a large landscaped garden, it is possible to build something that feels purposeful and well considered.”
This partnership has already attracted attention from designers and homeowners alike. From mid-June, the full setup will be on display at the Dream Gardens show site in Sudbury, Su olk. Visitors can explore the pergola, kitchen and seating area in person, gaining inspiration for their own garden transformations.
It seems that this approach to outdoor living is here to stay. Certainly, it’s more than a trend. In fact, it’s about helping to make lasting memories with family and friends, and when you pair a Grillo kitchen with a Caribbean Blinds pergola, you are creating a space that can be used every day of the year.
For Essex homeowners thinking of upgrading their gardens, the Grillo Pergola o ers a smart, considered solution. It brings together the best of British design and engineering to create an outdoor space that is as enjoyable in January as it is in July.

Sanjay Verma, the Chief Sleep O cer at Jensen Beds, on helping Olympic athletes to prepare and how the same principles can help you too
Q When did you first start studying the science behind sleep?
A I began in 2008, while working for a luxury bed brand. At the time, I was launching the brand in an emerging economy, but we struggled to make sales – despite our target customers having the means to buy, they felt the products were too expensive. To shift perceptions, I realized we needed to emphasize more than just luxury; we needed to focus on the value of truly restorative sleep. This forced me to quickly learn everything I could about what sleep is, why it matters, and how a bed or mattress can make a di erence.
Q How did this lead you to being a sleep coach for Swedish athletes?
A Later in my career, I joined Hilding Anders as Chief Sleep O cer to establish a Sleep Centre of Excellence, part of the company’s broader move to reposition itself as a “sleep company”.
“Every Jensen bed is designed to support sleep by providing ergonomic support”
Around the same time, the Swedish Olympic Committee approached Hilding Anders for sponsorship. We struck a deal: part of the sponsorship fee would be paid in services – specifically, sleep coaching. In return, Swedish Olympic athletes became brand ambassadors. I became the o cial Sleep Coach in 2020, and even after the sponsorship ended, I continue to work with both Sweden’s Summer and Winter Olympic teams.
Q Looking at athletes, how much would you say sleep plays a key role?
A It varies by athlete and sport, but the impact is undeniable. Walter Wallberg, a gold medalist at the Beijing Olympics, once told the media that his performance drops by 30% after a poor night’s sleep. In my view, sleep is significant enough to make or break an athlete over the long term.
Q What types of things do you encourage the athletes to do?
A I encourage a range of practices – primarily improving sleep hygiene, managing stress, and creating a bedroom environment that’s conducive to restful sleep.
Q When did the opportunity come up to join Jensen Beds?
A I joined Hilding Anders – the holding company of Jensen – in 2019, eager to move beyond simply selling high-end luxury products, which I’d done for over 15 years globally. I wanted to contribute to Hilding Anders’ mission to democratize good sleep. The company launched a new bed brand focused on sleep, with production handled by Jensen. Over time, that brand has been absorbed into Jensen itself. I continue to support Jensen’s drive to bring better sleep to new countries beyond its home market of Norway.
Q Today you are Chief Sleep
O cer: can you give us an idea of how a day in your life looks?
A No two days are the same. I spend time reading books, scientific journals, and listening to podcasts to stay on top of the latest sleep research. I collaborate with Jensen’s marketing team to help position the brand around sleep and support the new product development team with sleep-related insights. I also participate in PR activities –appearing as a guest on podcasts, attending marketing events, and giving sleep talks.
Q How much science goes into a Jensen Beds creation?
A A great deal. Even before I joined, a professional chiropractor led product development for nearly three decades. After his retirement, Jensen brought in another expert. Every new product is developed with the latest sleep research in mind and is rigorously tested in a Swiss laboratory. Only products that meet the highest standards
for ergonomics, hygiene, climate control, and sustainability are ever launched.
Q Looking at any recent mattress launch from Jensen Beds, how would you say it aids sleep?
A Every Jensen bed is designed to support sleep by providing optimal ergonomic support – thanks to a wide selection of models and firmness options, along with mechanisms to control firmness. They also isolate movement, maintain a comfortable climate by dispersing excess heat and wicking away moisture, and use sustainable materials throughout production.
Q Can you give us 5 top tips for the perfect night’s sleep?
1. Stick to a consistent sleep schedule. Your brain thrives on routine, and going to bed and waking up at the same time each day builds a powerful, compounding habit for better rest.
2. Seek bright morning light and dim evening lights. Morning sunlight signals your body to wake up, while avoiding bright and blue light at night tells your brain it’s time to wind down.
3. Keep your bedroom cool. A cooler room helps your body temperature drop naturally, making it easier to fall asleep.
4. Limit evening ca eine, alcohol, and heavy meals. What you consume before bed can disrupt your sleep quality.
5. Choose the right bed, mattress, pillows, duvet, and bed linen. Quality sleepsupporting bedding adapts to your body and preferences, turning your bed into a sanctuary for rest and recovery.

For a family considering a London staycation this summer, hit the beat and choose the Great Scotland Yard Hotel
By MARK KEBBLE
Tucked just o Whitehall, Great Scotland Yard Hotel blends discretely into its historic surroundings – and passing a policemounted horse just around the corner was a rather apt reminder of its past.
Upon entering through the iconic green doors, you descend a few steps into a lobby alive with Victorian- and Edwardianera artefacts – original police uniforms, sni er-dog handles in the elevator – that immediately set the tone. Being a true crime bu , I was fascinated by the mugshots on the wall, trying to picture what each of these criminals were snared for, creating my own stories in my head.
Our stay was, wonderfully, in the Sherlock Suite. You enter in the separate lounge area, o ering a comfy sofa facing a TV above a marble fireplace, before venturing into the bedroom and being greeted by a four-poster king bed. The adjoining bathroom, however, is the highlight: XL-sized, with twin sinks on a marble top, spacious shower, full-size bath,
and a separate toilet (Japanese Toto model). I have never had so much fun going to loo.
The hotel’s prime spot makes this perfect for a family staycation. It is just minutes away from Big Ben, Churchill’s War Rooms, the Houses of Parliament and the London Eye, plus London’s iconic National Portrait Gallery. The hotel itself will delight many a history bu : originally the HQ of the Metropolitan Police, it’s where Jack the Ripper suspects were interviewed, Charles Dickens shadowed o cers here, and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle used it as a base for his detective tales.
The history continues in the hotel’s distinctive cocktail bar, The 40 Elephants. Paying homage to history’s most glamorous and notorious all-female crime syndicate, The 40 Elephants redefines the art of mixology with its signature female-inspired cocktails. On our visit for some nibbles and aforementioned cocktails, we were also enamoured by the hotel’s current collaboration with Emma Chapman, the award-winning jewellery designer. Drawing on old heritage traditions, her jewellery incorporates carving, engraving,
enamel, jaali and embossed work. To celebrate the partnership, the hotel has curated a dedicated cocktail in honour of the partnership, ‘Punch to Beware Of’ (Lakes the One, Palosanto, Oloroso, Menthe, Veuve Clicquot) – and it certainly did pack a punch when we tried it.
The hotel’s main spot to eat is at Ekstedt at The Yard. The flagship restaurant brings Michelin starred chef Niklas Ekstedt’s signature style of wood fired ‘old Nordic’ cooking to the UK for the very first time. Ekstedt at The Yard focuses on Scandinavian cooking techniques using the very best seasonal British ingredients; featuring a menu of signature dishes, alongside an inventive cocktail menu and extensive wine list. Prepare yourself for an immersive journey to Scandinavia. On the menu on our visit was a host of familiar ingredients, but cooked and presented in unexpected ways: Flambadou oysters and beurre blanc; Sussex Pink Fire potatoes, grilled white asparagus, Elderflower; Juniper smoked lobster, fennel, fire cooked vegetable foam; Hay smoked lamb, sea buckthorn, mint;
Bay leaf ice cream, fermented strawberries, honey mead; and Cep mushroom sou e, woodru ice cream, blueberries. It was, indeed, quite the experience.
Despite the hotel’s location in the heart of London, it is remarkably quiet and the four-poster bed was a welcome retreat after an evening of indulgence. We only had a
one-night stay, so didn’t have a chance to sample the hotel’s afternoon tea, but do look out for their Tea Chronicles: The Royal Interlude for summer – fit for royalty, and steeped in intrigue. Set in The Parlour, the new afternoon tea is paired with Lavazza and features a celebration of timeless elegance and royal fascinations paying tribute to the British royal family.
For anyone looking for a UK break this summer in the capital in an iconic building, you can’t go far wrong with the Great Scotland Yard Hotel. We’d be quite happy for them to lock us up and throw away the key.
The Family Package starts from £550 per night. Find out more at hyatt.com/unboundcollection/en-US/lhrub-great-scotland-yard

Just like brushing their teeth and eating their five a day, encouraging your child to develop healthy learning habits will stand them in good stead for the future. As a parent, there are lots of ways that you can help your child to develop the positive habits that will set them up for life long success.
Children thrive on routine and preparing for the structure of the school day can easily be supported by having relevant structure at home. Introducing an established routine as early as possible will help your child to develop important strategies for independently managing their time
“As a parent, you know your child and what motivates them”
and learning before they start secondary school, when their homework will increase. For example, establishing a set time for homework each day builds an e ective foundation for home learning.
CREATE A WORK ZONE
A calm workspace can help children focus on their studies free from distractions. If you have the space to do so, it can be beneficial to create a calm, cosy area away from their bedroom so that they have a space to complete their homework or revise. Whether this is at the kitchen table, a desk in your home o ce, or even in the garden on a nice day, a space just for working will help to ensure that their bedroom remains a place for rest and relaxation.
SHOW INTEREST IN YOUR CHILD’S LEARNING
As a parent, you know your child and what motivates them. You can encourage their curiosity with fun activities that are educational and inspire conversations about the subjects they are learning about in school. Whether this
is visiting a museum or art gallery, reading together about something they are learning about at school, or listening to a podcast, there are lots of di erent activities you may already be enjoying together that show your interest in their learning while having fun. It is also important to be open with your child about the process and importance of trying again when expectations, targets or grades may not be met. Your encouragement can help to promote an all-important growth mindset in younger children, helping them build the healthy habit of learning from their mistakes and striving to improve.
ENCOURAGE SPORT AND EXTRACURRICULAR AS WELL AS ACADEMIC
While physical activities and sports are widely recognised for building discipline and dedication alongside their health benefits, the positive personal habits that are developed through other extra-curricular opportunities such as reading, playing an instrument, writing and drawing, are equally as important.
Your child’s experiences will likely influence their future interests and attitudes as they grow older. As a parent, you know what activities your child enjoys, both in and out of school, and can encourage and create more opportunities to follow these interests. For example, a simple conversation about your child’s favourite book can help them feel more confident about participating in classroom discussions.
ENSURE A BALANCED APPROACH TO TECHNOLOGY AND SCREEN TIME Technology can be both an extremely beneficial tool for learning and also a great way for your child to socialise or unwind, whether through age-appropriate gaming or talking to friends and family online, as part of a balanced lifestyle with plenty of in-person activities and interactions in the mix too. At Dame Bradbury’s, we provide students with school-managed iPads and guidance on appropriate use to assist with their studies, while supporting parents to help their children to use technology appropriately.
At home, you can help guide your child about the use of technology in ways that promote wellbeing and good habits. By modelling a balance between screen time with other activities such as art, sports or socialising, you can help reduce your child’s reliance on devices whilst ensuring they still develop the skills and ability to use technological aids responsibly in the future.
The experiences, routines and habits that we build during our early childhood are formative and make it much easier to sustain these as we move into adulthood. Nurturing healthy learning habits during the primary years will build strong foundations for your child’s success as they progress into secondary school and beyond.

At a school where ‘education with heart and soul’ is more than a motto, the performing arts are woven into the fabric of Worth’s broad educational experience. Balancing inclusion with excellence, the school’s dynamic music and drama programmes provide every student with the opportunity to grow in confidence, creativity and skill. From soaring choral concerts in the onsite Abbey Church to ambitious productions in the school’s stunning Performing Arts Centre, the stage is set for pupils of all abilities to shine. Whether discovering a new passion or honing their talents to the highest level, students are supported and inspired to give their best – together, and with joy.
Talented teachers share their experience and passion with gusto, ensuring students fulfil their true potential whether they be singing with the Chamber Choir in the Sistine Chapel or working on their acting, lighting, technical or costume-making skills.
Approximately 40 per cent of Worth students take an instrument, including singing. Opportunities are endless, from
How a thriving Performing Arts department at Worth School equips pupils with confidence and presentation skills
Jazz Band and the thriving 50-plus strong Symphony Orchestra which includes many pupils at Grade 8 standard or beyond, to plays, musicals and tours abroad (the last two being Salzburg and Lake Garda). The schedule of the Performing Arts department is an enriching one, and regular exposure to live audiences builds confidence and hones stage and presentation skills.
Worth Abbey, at the heart of school campus, is an inspirational space for gala concerts. The Performing Arts Centre is where drama productions take place; the ‘front of house’ resembles a West End theatre. The foyer showcases department-created ornate costumes backlit behind glass and framed posters of past productions. Smaller rooms host intimate events such as Young Musician of the Year competitions or informal recitals for family and friends.
Outreach projects with local schools and collaboration with organisations such as Glyndebourne Chorus are all special, formative experiences, and the school’s deep-rooted industry connections with professional artists
and companies have proved invaluable sources of motivation. The West End cast of Les Misérables recently met with students to give them practical advice and Worth’s own sta can be found starring in big London shows, too.
The Performing Arts department has record levels of students choosing music and drama for GCSE and A-level, the vast majority achieving A/A* 7/9. Many are determined to continue these studies; Worth runs a support group preparing them for the demands of a performing arts career and helps them create portfolios for auditions. Places have been won at schools such as LIPA and RADA. Students are encouraged to apply for professional theatre opportunities; recently secured roles include Matilda, School of Rock and the National Youth Theatre.
Recent alumni include Robert Bathurst (actor in Cold Feet, Downtown Abbey), Katharine Farmer (theatre director), Mark Spyropoulos (Director of Sacred Music Fondazione Mascarade Opera Studio, member of Sistine Chapel Choir), and Oli Jacobs (Grammy award-winning producer).

With tougher regulations coming in for the lettings market, it pays to do things properly, writes Durden & Hunt co-founder James Hunt
The rental landscape is changing. With the Renters Reform Bill on the horizon and increasingly strict AML and PEP regulations now being applied to the lettings sector, landlords are facing a more regulated environment than ever before. These changes are likely to push out some of the less compliant or rogue agents, creating a market where doing things properly isn’t just preferred – it’s essential.
Average UK rents are 21% higher over the last 3 years and the rental market remains on track for rental inflation of 3-4% over 2025 (Zoopla). Although there have been improved mortgage rates in the past year, allowing some renters to consider purchasing a residence, we expect to continue to see strong demand for rental properties as home ownership will
undoubtedly remain out of reach for some, or not be their personal preference.
Now more than ever, using a professional, fully compliant agent is key to safeguarding your investment. At Durden & Hunt, we’ve always believed lettings should be treated with the same diligence as sales. We operate to the highest standards, not just because regulation demands it, but because we know the value of protecting our clients and their assets.
Since my last column, I’m pleased to say our new Colchester o ce has launched with great success. The response from both landlords and sellers has been incredibly positive, rea rming that quality service and professional integrity still stand out in a crowded market.
If you’re a landlord looking for reassurance, guidance, or simply someone who takes their responsibilities seriously – we’re here.

The Essex business is sweeping up the accolades in the food and drink industry
Essex-based crisp producer, Fairfields Farm, has won three prestigious awards at the 2025 Farm Shop & Deli Product Awards. The brand entered three of its crisp flavours including Roast Rib of Beef, Sweet Chilli and Prawn Cocktail, into the Ambient Food and Drink category, proudly taking home all three awards.
Fairfields Farm’s Roast Rib of Beef flavour was awarded Gold, recognised for its exceptional quality, branding, flavour and taste. The Prawn Cocktail and Sweet Chilli flavours each earned Silver Awards, praised for their exceptional branding, packaging and strong shelf presence.
Fairfields Farm o ers a diverse range of eight crisp flavours, all of which are 100% vegan and gluten-free. The decision to become allergen-friendly was made by the brand in 2022, ensuring that everyone can enjoy their favourite flavours, regardless of dietary restrictions. Each packet is crafted to perfection with a carefully selected blend of seasonings and spices, delivering a distinctive taste experience. The crisp range is created using Fairfields Farm’s homegrown potatoes, hand-cooked on-site in Wormingford, using renewable energy.
Reflecting on the award wins, cofounder Robert Strathern says: “It’s always a pleasure to get recognition for the hard work of our team in creating really tasty crisps, especially knowing how much they’re loved by our customers.”
On top of this, Fairfields Farm is launching a brand-new limited edition flavour. Inspired by the growing consumer demand for bold and rich tastes, the brand is debuting its exciting new Chorizo & Red Wine flavour, which launched in May 2025. The new flavour replicates the true smoky profile of chorizo with hints of garlic, complemented by the fruity undertones of red wine.
Fairfields Farm stands out as one of the only crisp producers in the UK with an on-site factory, located on its potato farm. This set-up allows the company to maintain complete control over every stage of the production process, from growing its homegrown crisping potatoes to cooking, seasoning and packaging, ensuring every crisp meets the highest standard.
Co-founder, Laura Strathern, says: “We can’t wait for crisp fans to try our new Chorizo & Red Wine flavour. Consumers are always seeking new and exciting flavour experiences, and this one delivers. As soon as we tried it we knew we were onto a winner!”
