ABSOLUTELY’S July issue highlights

Summer for me has always meant the outdoors in some form or the other. There were our family holidays to Cornwall, which despite the drive were always eagerly anticipated; when back home, the longer days meant more time in the park playing football. I never wanted to leave.

As I got a little older, it became a time of festivals. I still remember as a 16-year-old going to my rst ever overnight festival down in Winchester, but falling asleep in a banging dance tent at 4am affected my street cred. Then, a year later, I was one of the lucky ones to see Oasis at Knebworth (it©s amazing how many people say they were there but I really was). Although, oddly, I do remember how digusting the toilets were as much as the music. Those were the days.

I am a little older now, but that hasn©t stopped a love for a summer festival, I just look for a more sedate pace. So, inside this issue, we present a mini summer special looking at some of the best ways to spend a day in the sun across Sussex, from art in nature at Wakehurst to classical music at Glyndebourne, with some family friendly fun thrown in too (as all my friends now have kids). Bring it on (just a little more quietly).

Navigating the school holidays as separated parents

As summer approaches, many families eagerly plan holidays and quality time with their children. For separated parents, however, this period can sometimes bring added stress and questions. As family lawyers, we often receive queries about international travel and holiday arrangements.

Q Do I need permission to take my child abroad?

A This depends on whether a court order is in place. With a Court Order: If a court order states the child lives with you, you can take your child out of the country for periods of up to one month without the other parentís permission. However, you must ensure these periods do not interfere with the time the child is ordered to spend with the other parent. Many court orders specifically outline holiday provisions, providing clarity for both parents.

Without a Court Order: If thereís no court order, neither parent can take the child abroad without the permission of everyone with parental responsibility. Doing so could be considered child "abduction".

Q Who has parental responsibility?

A Mothers automatically have parental responsibility. Fathers gain automatic

parental responsibility if they are married to the mother, or if they are named on the birth certificate for children born after 1st December, 2003. Parental responsibility can also be acquired if a father is named in a court order as having the child live with them.

UK holidays and general tips

For holidays within the UK or for sharing general school holiday time, e ective communication between parents is vital. If both parents work, co≠ordinating leave and arranging additional support from family (like grandparents) or holiday clubs is key. If direct communication is challenging, consider involving a third party to facilitate. Parenting apps designed for separated parents can also simplify scheduling.

MARWAHADI-BARNES

Planning ahead is paramount. School holiday dates are often published well in advance, allowing ample time to agree on shared arrangements. If you plan to take your child away, be open and share details like flight information, accommodation, and a contact number. Scheduling video calls or phone calls between the child and the other parent during the trip can also o er reassurance.

Resolving Disagreements

If you cannot reach an agreement with the other parent regarding holiday arrangements or other shared time, itís important to obtain legal advice. Before resorting to court involvement, several alternative methods can help resolve disputes, such as mediation, collaborative law, or arbitration. These approaches often provide a more flexible and less adversarial way to agree on holiday plans. If these alternatives arenít successful, court proceedings may become necessary. If you intend to take your child on holiday, raising the subject with the other parent as early as possible is advisable. Early planning reduces stress, provides certainty, and ensures su"cient time for court proceedings if they become unavoidable.

Sa ron tagliatelle with fresh tomato and lemon

Serves 6

This is a zingier, fresher take on the beloved and classic pasta al sugo. It’s important to use the sweetest tomatoes (datterini) to counteract the sharpness of the lemon. A few anchovies melted in at the beginning are also very welcome. Olives are a good addition, as are capers, parsley, tuna, rocket... I could go on. Making your own tagliatelle is easy and satisfying, and allows you to flavour and colour it with saffron, but if you’re short on time add a pinch of saffron to the sauce and use ready-made tagliatelle.

INGREDIENTS

For the tagliatelle

• 2 eggs

• 200 g (7 oz/11/3 cups) semola or 00 flour, plus extra for dusting

• 1/2 teaspoon ground sa ron

For the French sauce

• 2 tablespoons best-quality extra virgin olive oil

• 1/2 small white onion

• 200 g (7 oz) Datterini tomatoes

• 1 lemon, a few strips of peeled zest and a squeeze of juice

• A good pinch of sea salt

• 1 teaspoon sugar or light honey

• Marjoram, basil or parsley leaves, to serve

METHOD

1 First, make the pasta. Using either a stand mixer with a dough hook or your hands, mix the eggs into the semola, then add the sa ron and then knead it into the dough until smooth. Leave to rest wrapped in cling film (plastic wrap) for about 20 minutes.

2 Roll out the dough until just thin enough to see through (about the thickness of a penny). Cut into 1 cm (1/2 in) wide strips by hand or using your pasta machine and set aside, well dusted with extra semola to stop it sticking.

3 To make the sauce, heat the oil in a deep frying pan over a low heat and grate the onion into it. Sauté until soft and translucent. Halve the tomatoes, throw them in and turn the heat up (it will spit and hiss a bit, but not to worry). Cook until the tomatoes begin to collapse, then add the strips of lemon zest and continue cooking for a few minutes. Add the salt, sugar or honey and taste for seasoning. Add a squeeze of the lemon juice.

4 Cook the pasta in a large saucepan of well-salted boiling water until al dente. Drain the pasta and stir through the sauce, adjust the seasoning and serve with plenty of marjoram, basil or parsley scattered over, an extra drizzle of oil and a grating of fresh lemon zest.

Fried cheese with lemon

Serves 2

Are there any two sweeter words than fried cheese? Saganaki, that classic Greek taverna staple, is one of my favourite things on earth, and one of the many Greek dishes that make me shiny-eyed about emigrating (I adore Greek food). Luckily for me, the young pecorino I am able to get here in Sardinia can be treated in the same way. There are many similarities between Greek and Sardinian food – the numerous sheep’s cheeses of different consistency and flavour being one example. While cheese is o en roasted here in Sardinia, it is not usually fried in this way, yet the Greek technique of a he y squeeze of lemon to cut through the fat is pure, lip-smacking heaven.

INGREDIENTS

• 2 thick slabs of pecorino fresco (or provolone, young Gouda, feta or halloumi, based on what you have available)

• A little flour

• Olive oil, for frying

• Sea salt

• Lemon wedges

METHOD

1 Coat the cheese evenly in flour. Heat a good drizzle of olive oil in a heavybased saucepan over a medium heat.

2 Fry the cheese for a minute or two on each side until golden brown.

3 Drain briefly on paper towels, sprinkle with salt (necessary if using a young pecorino but not with the very salty halloumi) and then serve immediately with fat wedges of lemon to squeeze over.

Serves 8ñ10

A perfect late spring/early summer pudding, which plays on quintessential Italian flavours. Unlike the traditional (and o en overly sweet) pavlova, I prefer a tangy yoghurt cream and velvety curd with just the slight background note of olive oil, which chimes beautifully with the fragrant basil. Decorate with your favourite edible flowers (such as jasmine) and strawberries, or your favourite summer berries. I make double my usual pavlova recipe as it deserves to be mighty and magnificent for a festa, but if you are making for a smaller more subdued setting, by all means halve the recipe.

INGREDIENTS

For the pavlova

• 6 egg whites

• 350 g (12 oz/13/4 cups) sugar

• Zest of 3 lemons plus

• 1 tablespoon juice

• 10 g (2 teaspoons) cornflour (cornstarch)

For the yoghurt cream

• 250 ml (8 fl oz/1 cup) double (heavy) cream

• 200 g (7 fl oz/scant 1 cup) Greek yoghurt

• 3 tablespoons icing (confectionerís) sugar

For the lemon-olive oil curd

• 5 g (1 scant tablespoon) cornflour (cornstarch)

• Juice of 2 lemons

• 1 egg plus 2 egg yolks

• 140 g (51/4 oz/2/3 cup) sugar

• 40 g (11/2 oz) butter

• 30 ml (2 tablespoons) extra virgin olive oil

• A pinch of salt

To finish (optional)

• 200 g (7 oz) strawberries, halved

• Edible flowers

• Basil leaves

• Lemon zest squiggles

METHOD

1 Preheat the oven to 130oC fan (150oC/300oF). Line a baking tray with baking parchment.

2 Whisk the egg whites with the lemon juice until they form sti , satin-like peaks. Add the sugar a spoonful at a time, whisking all the time. Once all of the sugar has been incorporated and the meringue is once again in sti and silky peaks, whisk in the lemon zest and cornflour.

3 Spread the meringue out into a large circle on the lined baking tray, making the edges a little higher than the middle to allow for the filling (I aim for pizza size, i.e. about 25 cm/10 in). Bake in the oven for around 1 hour until crisp (gently check the underside), then turn o the oven, open the door and leave to cool completely before topping.

4 To make the yoghurt cream, whip the cream in a bowl until you have soft peaks, then stir in the yoghurt and icing sugar.

5 To make the curd, whisk the cornflour into the lemon juice until dissolved, then pour into a small saucepan, add all the remaining ingredients and place over a medium-low heat. This will take around 10 minutes. Cook, whisking continuously, until it becomes thick and velvety. Set aside to cool until ready to use.

6 To finish, spread the cream over the top of the pavlova and then dot over the curd. Scatter over edible flowers, strawberries, basil leaves and lemon zest squiggles to your liking, and serve.

he main drawback, for me, in having a pedicure is the flipflop situation. Sure, there are possibly two months in the course of the year during which Iím comfortable wearing flipflops in London but there are no guarantees. So a pedicure in winter is not an option to me, at least it wasnít until I discovered the at-home treatment. And for an all-round foot health treatment, Elimís medical pedicure is a cut above most treatments. In fact, Elim says that 98 per cent of their clients would recommend their treatments to a friend, which is a strong claim. Elimís speciality is a treatment based on advanced podiatry techniques. Unlike traditional pedicures, it uses medical-grade products, featuring a chemical peel that removes dead skin and softens calluses without abrasive filing, followed by a deep cleanse, nail care, and moisturizing using active ingredients like AHAs and vitaminrich creams.

My therapist Khristine turns up fully equipped and I install myself on the sofa. Unphased by our enthusiastic kitten, she liberates my feet from several layers of dead skin (ìitís so satisfying,î she says) and addresses all of the hard bits before filing my nails and painting them a fetching shade of orange. And sheís done in almost exactly an hour, leaving my nails to dry in the comfort of my house. No flipflops required.

Popular in LA but relatively new to the UK, Lagree is a high≠intensity, low≠impact workout method that combines strength, endurance, core, and exibility training. Performed on the Megaformer (never call it a Reformer), Lagree focuses on slow, controlled movements that activate multiple muscle groups simultaneously. Our instructor arrives and we take our positions: another diference between Lagree and Reformer Pilates is that with Lagree we're mostly standing up, and all the platforms move. Simply keeping still requires signifi cant muscle engagement. And be warned: this is hard. Our rst

moves look simple, but they're really not, and focusing on slowing everything down requires an enormous efort.

Pretty soon I'm shaking. All my muscles are engaged and even though this is the Rookie class, I can't hold many positions for the required time. The class starts with standing leg exercises and moves onto lying leg raises with feet in weighted straps, and nishes with arm and shoulder exercises,

Performed on the Megaformer (never call it a Reformer), Lagree focuses on slow, controlled movements

where we stand on the oor and lift weighted straps. It's all very careful and precise, and the instructor corrects my poses by tiny increments to make sure they're spot on. Lagree emphasises time under tension, helping build lean muscle, burn fat, and improve posture and balance. Unlike traditional Pilates, it integrates modern exercise science for a more dynamic, full≠ body workout. It also minimises stress on joints while maximising muscular efort, making it efective for all tness levels. And happily, classes only last 50 minutes. TIMELESS TEXTURES

There is something rather magical about visiting Inglis Hallís Lewes showroom, where founder Toby Hall can help make your dream kitchen a reality - hereís how

Q Was there a particular moment that inspired you to launch Inglis Hall?

A The decision to launch Inglis Hall was less of a single moment and more of an accumulation of experiences. There was, however, a turning point when I worked on a project for Rupert Grey, creating a kitchen inspired by Johnny Greyís philosophy. That experience lit a spark for me I saw kitchens as more than functional spaces; they could tell stories, celebrate materials, and be truly, magically personal. That vision, paired with my lifelong connection to making, was the catalyst for establishing Inglis Hall.

Q Were you determined to be di erent in some way?

A Absolutely. I wanted Inglis Hall to break free from the mainstream, moving away from kitchens designed simply to follow trends. My aim was to create kitchens that felt tactile, timeless, and deeply connected to their materials. Drawing on my timber≠ framing background, I wanted to introduce textures, like band≠sawn oak, into modern kitchen design. It was about combining traditional craft with a modern sensibility and keeping a sense of individuality in every piece. The truth is, I am not that keen on fitted kitchens, so I had to break the mould. Craft in a contemporary kitchen: that was interesting and exciting.

Q Have you evolved in any way since day one?

A Weíve evolved immensely and continuously since those early days in a small barn. What began as a passion project has grown into a thriving workshop and a cohesive team of gifted makers, designers, and thinkers. My partnership with Tim Flux was a pivotal moment in our evolution; his strategic mind helped us combine artistry with precision business systems. Today, Inglis Hall operates with the same dedication to craft, but on a scale that allows us to bring more profound care and thought into every project.

Q How do you approach a new kitchen project?

A Every project starts with a conversation. We immerse ourselves in understanding how our clients live, cook, and gather. From that initial brief, we explore materials, textures, and zones that reflect their lifestyle and the architecture of their home. Itís a deeply collaborative process, balancing practicality with beauty, always looking for ways to enhance the small rituals of daily life. In short, nail the brief, nail the floorplan and the rest will take care of itself!

Q How involved are clients in what you create?

A Our clients are at the heart of everything we do. They are collaborators and an essential part of the process. From shaping the initial brief to refining the final details, we invite them to meet with us in our workshop, where they can witness their kitchen taking shape. By the time a project is complete, each kitchen feels enriched with their personality and vision.

Q Do you think there is an Inglis Hall style?

A There is an Inglis Hall signature, but itís less about a fixed style and more about an ethos. Youíll notice materials like band≠sawn oak, elegantly balanced with contemporary, flat≠panel finishes. Youíll feel the weight of handcrafted quality and sense thoughtfulness in every proportion. Our kitchens draw on tradition, but they always feel personal, blending timeless beauty with modern sophistication. We have always drawn inspiration from professional restaurant kitchens. Back of house for working, front of house for atmosphere and play.

Q Can you pick out 2≠3 kitchens you have recently created that are very di erent with regards to the brief and final design?

A Ooh thatís trickyÖ Gun Road, Sussex, was a great example. Two highly talented

designers in their own right, had a clear vision that we successfully worked with in order to keep it within our own design language, whilst respecting their original vision. A stunning home which felt like a Soho House interior, and a wonderful Ridgeback called Obe.

Crouch End was very di!erent but was still a real voyage. Working closely with talented architect Nikki Blustin on a project that completely transformed a London Victorian terrace with some awe≠inspiring detailing. One audacious manoeuvre was to completely remove the floor between lower ground and first floor to create a double height cathedral of a sitting room! This flooded our kitchen with wonderful light and put this project on another level.

Lastly, and again a very di!erent journey was the Georgian Manor. Edinburgh, designed entirely remotely with just one site recce to double check all dimensions before manufacture. Another fantastic, bold client that needed a unique approach to a kitchen that also doubled up as a jam factory. The challenges and logistics of working at distance all went surprisingly well, and it remains one of our favourite projects.

Q Have you been based in Lewes since you first launched?

A Yes, Lewes has always been the spiritual

TOBY HALL

home of Inglis Hall. I started here in a small barn and eventually moved to the Phoenix Industrial Estate before relocating to our current 10,000≠square≠ foot workshop. Itís a place deeply tied to my childhood and the rhythms of the South Downs, which inspire so much of what we do. Being just a stoneís throw from London is also becoming increasingly important as many of our clients have a base in the capital.

Q What do you like about being based in this part of Sussex?

A Thereís an enduring character to this part of Sussex that mirrors our values. The community is rooted in a respect for craft and heritage, and the landscape o!ers endless inspiration. Whether itís the rolling hills, the history of Charleston or the proximity to Breaky Bottom Vineyard where I grew up, not forgetting the vibrant culture of Lewes itself, this place has a rhythm and beauty thatís impossible to ignore.

Q What would we find in your studio?

A Our studio is filled with thought and energy. Next, you will find a good quality co!ee and quite likely a little something to accompany it! Even more importantly you will find us in an actual kitchen. The art of entertaining is part of who we are. So this is a fully functional kitchen, our kitchen. The radio will be playing, and like many people nowadays, we will be working away in our kitchen. We are always ready to take a break for a visitor, so please do drop by and take a look.

Q How do you see the future of Inglis Hall evolving from here?

A The future of Inglis Hall is about deepening our commitment to craft while expanding our reach. Weíll continue to challenge convention and refine our processes, always staying true to our roots. I can see us focusing even more on education, sharing our knowledge with clients and the broader community. Ultimately, itís about making kitchens that donít just stand the test of time, but enrich daily life for generations to come.

A REGENCY

Exploring

a Kemptown, Brighton, townhouse

renovation by Sussex-based Lolita Colenso Design

Tucked away on a quiet one≠way street sits this Grade II listed Regency townhouse built in 1802. With a partial sea view from the first floor balcony and whitewashed houses all around, it makes this home an idyllic place to be. Thatís the outside, but inside is a very di erent story. As with most of the old properties in this part of town, this house was stripped of all its original features long before the Grade II listing came into e ect. Sadly, all the fire surrounds were removed and fireplaces boarded up. Furthermore, the house was unoccupied for over a decade and when it was found

by its current owners it was crumbling and damp, but the location was perfect.

Lolita and her team took this project on for its new owners who have two young children, with the intention of restoring its original elements, including architraves, skirting, panelling, repair and reinstatement of crumbling floors and restoration of all of its fireplaces, making two of them functional. Permission to execute the work was granted in March 2021 by the Brighton & Hove Council, with the condition that work was to be done hand in hand with the conservation team with the aim of restoring the original elements of the house where possible.

From an interior design perspective this project was mainly structural with a new kitchen and three new bathrooms installed and furniture specification and supply for the three bedrooms and the dual aspect double living room.

Working closely with the conservation team, Lolita was allowed, after providing plans and drawings, to sink the ground floor patio to the basement level and

extend the kitchen by connecting a small outer building. By doing so this created a unique and spacious open plan kitchen dining area with utility and a much≠desired large larder cupboard room. While excavation was under way Lolita discovered a hidden storage hole which has become a useful wine cellar.

On the raised ground floor Lolita added an extra bathroom to the rear. She also reintroduced partition doors to allow occasional separation between the sitting and rear reading rooms, therefore creating an opportunity for an occasional fourth bedroom. Instead of curtains, solid refurbished shutters were added to each of the bedrooms and the reading room to allow an overnight blackout that also keeps the warmth in and cold out.

The house has four floors in all. After the renovation the top two floors contain three bedrooms and a large family bathroom. On the raised ground floor there is a sitting room and reading room/snug or fourth bedroom and a second bathroom and a hallway bench seat to put on shoes.

In the basement the large kitchen dining room, with access to utility and pantry rooms, connects to the secluded patio garden with its lovely old flint wall and a new outdoor stairway connecting the two lower floors. The new metal stairway was commissioned from a locally based artist blacksmith Thomas Gontar in Glynde and it had to replicate the design of the first floor balcony. With this stairway you can access the patio from the ground floor as well as from the kitchen. The stairs carefully follow the curve of the shaded part of the garden. And although small in size this tiny outdoor area is the favourite part of the home for the new owners, who initially had to be convinced this was worth doing.

New Critall doors were designed by Fabco. Two doors were installed to access the patio from the kitchen, one on the ground level to access the steps leading down to the patio and one internally into the utility room. The style of the doors were chosen to resemble the original Critall door from the 1920s and painted an o ≠white colour to complement this seaside property. Choosing the right elements was challenging as a lot of what was purchased was done online, with some long waits for samples. Choosing tiles for the house was most intricate as every room in the house has tiles. For the kitchen dining room,

Lolita decided on large black limestone tiles combined with small Carrara marble squares in traditional style. Underfloor heating was installed for extra warmth and to prevent any accumulation of damp. The patio ground was achieved by combining stained terracotta tiles and irregularly placed antique tiles to create an authentic original look and continuity with the kitchen floor. The utility room with its curved brick wall had similar black metro≠style tiles installed. Delft tiles were wildly used in Regency homes, but a limited budget after the basement dig meant they had to improvise so Lolita embarked on a search for a fresh idea around Delft tiles and came across a wonderful Belgium≠based craftsman to make beautiful sea and land Delft style tiles, which when combined with zellige made a unique, timeless frame for the splashback around the kitchen worktop.

All seven existing fireplaces were restored using original fire surrounds, which Lolita was able to source. In the living and drawing rooms original Regency inserts were also sourced and installed. The kitchen fireplace sitting in the largest room in the house needed to be special. The surround came from an antiques shop in Kent and the Carrara marble tiles from a nearby reclamation yard. The kitchen cabinets are from

British Standard, painted in Little Greene marine blue and the handles are all unique collected from various antique shops. The lighting in the house is sourced from a mix of antique and local lighting shops.

To the owners it was very important to have their existing furniture fit in a period home, so Lolita sensitively organised the space and added a few additional items to fit in well with past and present carefully mixing the di erent periods.

The home now works for the family of four who love the newly extended kitchen and patio, particularly as space is definitely a premium in this part of town.

SCIENCE OF SLEEP

Sanjay Verma, the Chief Sleep O cer at Jensen Beds, on helping Olympic athletes to prepare and how the same principles can help you too

Q When did you first start studying the science behind sleep?

A I began in 2008, while working for a luxury bed brand. At the time, I was launching the brand in an emerging economy, but we struggled to make sales despite our target customers having the means to buy, they felt the products were too expensive. To shift perceptions, I realized we needed to emphasize more than just luxury; we needed to focus on the value of truly restorative sleep. This forced me to quickly learn everything I could about what sleep is, why it matters, and how a bed or mattress can make a di erence.

Q How did this lead you to being a sleep coach for Swedish athletes?

A Later in my career, I joined Hilding Anders as Chief Sleep O cer to establish a Sleep Centre of Excellence, part of the companyís broader move to reposition itself as a ìsleep companyî.

ìEvery Jensen bed is designed to support sleep by providing ergonomic supportî

Around the same time, the Swedish Olympic Committee approached Hilding Anders for sponsorship. We struck a deal: part of the sponsorship fee would be paid in services specifically, sleep coaching. In return, Swedish Olympic athletes became brand ambassadors. I became the o cial Sleep Coach in 2020, and even after the sponsorship ended, I continue to work with both Swedenís Summer and Winter Olympic teams.

Q Looking at athletes, how much would you say sleep plays a key role?

A It varies by athlete and sport, but the impact is undeniable. Walter Wallberg, a gold medalist at the Beijing Olympics, once told the media that his performance drops by 30% after a poor nightís sleep. In my view, sleep is significant enough to make or break an athlete over the long term.

Q What types of things do you encourage the athletes to do?

A I encourage a range of practices primarily improving sleep hygiene, managing stress, and creating a bedroom environment thatís conducive to restful sleep.

Q When did the opportunity come up to join Jensen Beds?

A I joined Hilding Anders the holding company of Jensen in 2019, eager to move beyond simply selling high≠end luxury products, which Iíd done for over 15 years globally. I wanted to contribute to Hilding Andersí mission to democratize good sleep. The company launched a new bed brand focused on sleep, with production handled by Jensen. Over time, that brand has been absorbed into Jensen itself. I continue to support Jensenís drive to bring better sleep to new countries beyond its home market of Norway.

Q Today you are Chief Sleep

O cer: can you give us an idea of how a day in your life looks?

A No two days are the same. I spend time reading books, scientific journals, and listening to podcasts to stay on top of the latest sleep research. I collaborate with Jensenís marketing team to help position the brand around sleep and support the new product development team with sleep≠related insights. I also participate in PR activities appearing as a guest on podcasts, attending marketing events, and giving sleep talks.

Q How much science goes into a Jensen Beds creation?

A A great deal. Even before I joined, a professional chiropractor led product development for nearly three decades. After his retirement, Jensen brought in another expert. Every new product is developed with the latest sleep research in mind and is rigorously tested in a Swiss laboratory. Only products that meet the highest standards

for ergonomics, hygiene, climate control, and sustainability are ever launched.

Q Looking at any recent mattress launch from Jensen Beds, how would you say it aids sleep?

A Every Jensen bed is designed to support sleep by providing optimal ergonomic support thanks to a wide selection of models and firmness options, along with mechanisms to control firmness. They also isolate movement, maintain a comfortable climate by dispersing excess heat and wicking away moisture, and use sustainable materials throughout production.

Q Can you give us 5 top tips for the perfect nightís sleep?

1. Stick to a consistent sleep schedule. Your brain thrives on routine, and going to bed and waking up at the same time each day builds a powerful, compounding habit for better rest.

2. Seek bright morning light and dim evening lights. Morning sunlight signals your body to wake up, while avoiding bright and blue light at night tells your brain itís time to wind down.

3. Keep your bedroom cool. A cooler room helps your body temperature drop naturally, making it easier to fall asleep.

4. Limit evening ca eine, alcohol, and heavy meals. What you consume before bed can disrupt your sleep quality.

5. Choose the right bed, mattress, pillows, duvet, and bed linen. Quality sleep≠ supporting bedding adapts to your body and preferences, turning your bed into a sanctuary for rest and recovery.

TOP OF the BILL

For a family considering a London staycation this summer, hit the beat and choose the Great Scotland Yard Hotel

Tucked just o Whitehall, Great Scotland Yard Hotel blends discretely into its historic surroundings and passing a police≠ mounted horse just around the corner was a rather apt reminder of its past.

Upon entering through the iconic green doors, you descend a few steps into a lobby alive with Victorian≠ and Edwardian≠ era artefacts original police uniforms, sni er≠dog handles in the elevator that immediately set the tone. Being a true crime bu , I was fascinated by the mugshots on the wall, trying to picture what each of these criminals were snared for, creating my own stories in my head. Our stay was, wonderfully, in the Sherlock Suite. You enter in the separate lounge area, o ering a comfy sofa facing a TV above a marble fireplace, before venturing into the bedroom and being greeted by a four≠poster king bed. The adjoining bathroom, however, is the highlight: XL≠sized, with twin sinks on a marble top, spacious shower, full≠size bath,

and a separate toilet (Japanese Toto model). I have never had so much fun going to loo.

The hotelís prime spot makes this perfect for a family staycation. It is just minutes away from Big Ben, Churchillís War Rooms, the Houses of Parliament and the London Eye, plus Londonís iconic National Portrait Gallery. The hotel itself will delight many a history bu : originally the HQ of the Metropolitan Police, itís where Jack the Ripper suspects were interviewed, Charles Dickens shadowed o cers here, and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle used it as a base for his detective tales.

The history continues in the hotelís distinctive cocktail bar, The 40 Elephants. Paying homage to historyís most glamorous and notorious all≠female crime syndicate, The 40 Elephants redefines the art of mixology with its signature female≠inspired cocktails. On our visit for some nibbles and aforementioned cocktails, we were also enamoured by the hotelís current collaboration with Emma Chapman, the award≠winning jewellery designer. Drawing on old heritage traditions, her jewellery incorporates carving, engraving,

enamel, jaali and embossed work. To celebrate the partnership, the hotel has curated a dedicated cocktail in honour of the partnership, ëPunch to Beware Ofí (Lakes the One, Palosanto, Oloroso, Menthe, Veuve Clicquot) and it certainly did pack a punch when we tried it.

The hotelís main spot to eat is at Ekstedt at The Yard. The flagship restaurant brings Michelin starred chef Niklas Ekstedtís signature style of wood fired ëold Nordicí cooking to the UK for the very first time. Ekstedt at The Yard focuses on Scandinavian cooking techniques using the very best seasonal British ingredients; featuring a menu of signature dishes, alongside an inventive cocktail menu and extensive wine list.

Prepare yourself for an immersive journey to Scandinavia. On the menu on our visit was a host of familiar ingredients, but cooked and presented in unexpected ways: Flambadou oysters and beurre blanc; Sussex Pink Fire potatoes, grilled white asparagus, Elderflower; Juniper smoked lobster, fennel, fire cooked vegetable foam; Hay smoked lamb, sea buckthorn, mint;

Bay leaf ice cream, fermented strawberries, honey mead; and Cep mushroom sou e, woodru ice cream, blueberries. It was, indeed, quite the experience.

Despite the hotelís location in the heart of London, it is remarkably quiet and the four≠poster bed was a welcome retreat after an evening of indulgence. We only had a

one≠night stay, so didnít have a chance to sample the hotelís afternoon tea, but do look out for their Tea Chronicles: The Royal Interlude for summer fit for royalty, and steeped in intrigue. Set in The Parlour, the new afternoon tea is paired with Lavazza and features a celebration of timeless elegance and royal fascinations paying tribute to the British royal family.

For anyone looking for a UK break this summer in the capital in an iconic building, you canít go far wrong with the Great Scotland Yard Hotel. Weíd be quite happy for them to lock us up and throw away the key.

Sussexís Windlesham House School is set to join the Charterhouse family of schools

Windlesham House, an independent day and boarding prep school in West Sussex, has announced it will ofcially join the Charterhouse family of schools at the end of the coming academic year on 1st August. Windlesham House School was established in 1837 as the rst ever UK prep school. It was also the rst to admit girls in 1967 and is still one of the few prep schools in the UK today not to have a school uniform.

Martina Asmar, Chair of Governors at Windlesham House School, says: ìI am absolutely delighted that our charities will merge and that Windlesham House will join the Charterhouse family of schools. It became very clear early on in our discussions that joining with Charterhouse would provide a unique opportunity to further enhance the education that Windlesham House provides for its families, and to secure the long≠term interests of the school. The two schools are very similar in terms of their ethos and approach, and we believe that, together, we will provide an exceptional academic, yet all≠round, curriculum to prepare our pupils for life.î

Under the agreement of the merger, Windlesham House will retain its current identity, name, ethos, values, no uniform policy, and its badge, as well as its day≠to≠day operational autonomy and senior leadership teams.

Ben Evans will also continue to lead Windlesham House as its Headmaster. He explains: ìThis move will see Windlesham House join with one of the nest independent senior schools in the UK. As well as Charterhouse, our new family of schools includes Edgeborough, the outstanding co≠educational prep school in Farnham, Surrey, which successfully joined Charterhouse in 2021. It is clear to me that the ethos of our schools is similar in many ways, blending tradition and innovation in order to provide an exceptional education for our young people.î

A single Governing Body will have responsibility for all three schools within the group and, from that, a new committee will be created to oversee the governance of Windlesham House specifi cally, comprising a mix of Charterhouse, Windlesham House and newly appointed governors.

Ben Evans adds: ìCharterhouse is already well known to Windlesham House pupils, with a steady number of children moving to and thriving there each year and we look forward to this tradition continuing. I am extremely proud of everything we have achieved over recent years. This exciting opportunity will provide tremendous additional impetus to support the next chapters in Windleshamís future, whilst allowing us to remain true to our heritage.î

The historic West Sussex school is famous for its long list of celebrity alumni, including Guy Ritchie, Tamzin Merchant, Sir Michael Horden and Adam Buxton to name a few. The merger will formally take efect on 1st August, ready for the beginning of the 2025/26 academic year, subject to the normal regulatory and nal approvals.

ìBoarding creates confidence, independence and a sense of belongingî

Themed suppers, complete with country≠ inspired quizzes and conversations, give children the chance to dress up, dine with sta from all areas of the school, and practice the art of conversation.

ìOver the years, we have seen the importance of the lifelong friendships formed in the boarding community, creating confidence, independence and a sense of belonging,î says Caroline.

ìFormer pupils often tell us of how they remember their boarding times with huge a ection, realising the opportunities it o ered them beyond their school work to be part of so much more.î

Friendship, growth, freedom: exploring boarding at Cumnor House

Sussex building BLOCKS

Boarding at Cumnor o ers a natural extension in a childís developmental journey, but more than this, it is a shared experience that nurtures independence, builds confidence and deepens connections.

Boarding is part of the heart and soul of Cumnor; much more than a night away from home, it cements friendships, creates an essential sense of group responsibility, and prepares the pupils

for the challenges and routines of senior schools. From the start of the day with breakfast and getting school≠ready, to the eveningís activities after prep and supper, the boarders feel a deep connection and bond to the school and each other.

At the core of the boarding experience are Rob and Caroline Park, the schoolís dedicated Houseparents. Having been part of the Cumnor community for 12 years, they create a welcoming, supportive and jovial atmosphere, making it easy for children to express themselves freely and to be part of a special community.

Increasingly, boarding is a welcome antidote for young digital natives. As much as they as a school are continuously refining and developing their digital provision, they also recognise the importance that physical and emotional literacy play in any childís development. Boarding o ers dedicated, protected time away from phones and devices, allowing pupils the time and space to engage with each other and the rural surroundings mindfully. The impact of this is far reaching, both at home and at school.

Above all, boarding fosters friendships across di erent age groups, creating a sense of camaraderie that permeates the entire student body. Itís all about building connections and making memories together. Many of Cumnorís children have been enticed to board after hearing of their siblingís positive experiences or participated in one of their immersive trial weekends, leaving them eager to partake on a regular basis.

Goodwood Art FOUNDATION

World class contemporary art has arrived in West Sussex

The hotly anticipated new destination for world≠ class contemporary art in Sussex, Goodwood Art Foundation, has opened its doors to glowing reviews and critical acclaim. Following a busy two days launching to press, dignitaries, guests and critics from the art world, the public were finally able to see what five years of hard work, transformation, planting, building and installing artworks has produced at the end of May.

Sir Chris Bryant MP, Minister of State for Culture, Media and Sport was in attendance at the o cial launch, addressing crowds on the importance of bringing art out of urban areas and making it accessible to all, a key aim of the not≠for≠profit organisation. Also in attendance were major international artists whose works are featuring in the Foundationís opening season: headline artist and first female winner of the prestigious Turner Price, Rachel Whiteread, who has four major sculptures on show along with previously unseen photography, said of how the artwork is placed in the 70≠acre landscape, ìall the work has been located so that it has enough breathing space and some of the pieces are really quite unexpectedî. Lubna Chowdary (UK), whose ceramics adorn the walls of new licensed cafÈ, 24, Susan Philipsz (Scotland), Veronica Ryan (Montserrat), Amie Siegel (USA), and Rose Wylie (UK) turned out in force to ensure the opening had star appeal.

The opening weekend also saw the first Goodwood Art Foundation volunteers welcoming guests in the two gallery spaces and the incredible landscape. Director, Richard Grindy, says: ìVolunteers are the lifeblood of not≠for≠profit arts organisations and we are hugely grateful to have such a lovely and knowledgeable group. Chichester is an area incredibly rich in the arts and

we are delighted to be adding to it in such a bold manner. We have been blown away by the overwhelmingly positive response to the Foundation from those who have visited so far and look forward to welcoming many more visitors in the coming months.î

Goodwood Art Foundation will open weekly from Thursday to Monday and visitors are advised to book in advance to secure a parking space during busy times. A ticket for the Foundation is required to visit 24. Annual memberships are available to purchase and day tickets are £15 each with accompanied under≠18s free.
