LETTER Editor’s

ABSOLUTELY’S August issue highlights

Back in the dark days of Covid – the very first lockdown was announced on my birthday, which was fun – I decided to take a personal training course. It wasn't anything major as I was in full-time employment, so was done more out of interest than with any career change aspirations. What I discovered is how remarkable the human body is.

You always hear about how making a small change to your lifestyle can reap the benefits, and it's so true. So much goes into making us work on a daily basis, and just the odd slip here or there can have a lasting impact. I haven't become one of those who refuses a bag of crisps, I am just more aware that one cheat day should be it. I wasn't always one to add more veg to my meals, but I do now as I know what kind of impact it will have. Sleep, too, is paramount and something I try to stick to a rigid routine around.

The result is I feel probably fitter than ever –and I spent 20 years playing football at a pretty decent standard. All of this adds up to why I love it when our health and fitness special comes around as I am genuinely interested in what experts in different fields have to say. Reading our piece on Reformer Pilates has convinced me to give it a go, and there are plenty more top tips from across Sussex. It makes you feel good.

UNDER THE SPOTLIGHT

Why the Chichester International Film Festival will be celebrating local actress Kate Winslet when it returns this month

Chichester International Film Festival is a renowned cultural event and is once again ready to captivate audiences this summer. From 8th-24th August, the festival promises another vibrant and exciting line-up of films, special events, talks and live performances, all celebrating the art of cinema.

Among this year’s programme highlights is a tribute to one of Chichester’s very own residents: Academy Award-winning actress, Kate Winslet.

A LOCAL STAR WITH UNIVERSAL APPEAL

Although Kate Winslet’s incredible career has taken her across the globe, she finds a peaceful haven in a coastal village in West Sussex. Since moving here, she has largely embraced a quiet, family-oriented lifestyle, valuing the tranquillity and close-knit community the area provides. Known for fiercely protecting her privacy and that of her family’s, Kate seems to have established a balance between her global success and her local roots.

Few actors have mastered the ability to transcend genres as seamlessly as Kate. From period dramas to hard-hitting contemporary films, and even mind-bending science fiction, she moves fluidly through roles that demonstrate her depth, intelligence, and fearless approach. Her work has garnered accolades – including an Academy Award and BAFTAs –and the enduring admiration of audiences everywhere.

NO ROLE TOO DEEP

This carefully curated strand of the Chichester International Film Festival 2025 will showcase a handpicked selection of Kate’s films that o er a glimpse into her extraordinary and exceptional range of roles. Her blockbuster hits such as Titanic and The Holiday which regularly feature on TV screens have deliberately not been included in the line-up; instead, the festival aims to dig deeper, o ering an opportunity to rediscover familiar films through fresh eyes and uncover lesserknown gems that showcase just how fearlessly Kate embraces complexity through a distinctive lens.

OVER THREE DECADES OF FILM FESTIVITIES

The Chichester International Film Festival has celebrated and explored the art of film since its inception in 1992, attracting filmmakers, critics, and enthusiasts from far and wide. Today, under the directorship of Walter Francisco, the festival continues to grow in ambition and scope, o ering over 100 films across expanded venues in the area.

KATE WINSLET IN LEE

The Reader (15)

Perhaps one of her most complex roles, this postWWII drama earned Kate both an Oscar and a BAFTA for Best Actress for her portrayal of Hannah Schmitz.

From open air screenings in Priory Park to silent films accompanied by live music at St. John’s Chapel, the festival’s unique programme is rooted in its celebration of both new cinema and film history. Organised by Chichester Cinema, the independent venue has attracted visits from iconic artists such as Steven Poliakof, Ken Russell and Ralph Fiennes, each sharing their insight and passion with the Festival’s audiences.

Now in its 33rd year, the festival will once again open with its immensely popular open air screenings featuring iconic films including Top Gun, Walk the Line, Wicked, Bob Marley: One Love and Bridget Jones Mad About The Boy. Other highlights include a showcase of Jane Austen adaptations to mark the author’s 250th anniversary, a tribute to Jack Lemmon, a series of David Lynch movies, a spotlight on Indian films beyond Bollywood and country music films as well as various UK and world premieres.

The festival strand dedicated to Kate Winslet’s filmography is a testament to the power of versatility, talent, and the art of storytelling. She’s an actress who takes risks, pouring her heart into every role, and this year’s festival provides the chance for audiences to explore her remarkable career in a way that feels intimate and refreshing.

Whether you’re discovering lesser-known works or revisiting celebrated ones, this is the perfect opportunity to appreciate the layers and nuances of one of the finest performers of our generation.

Two Faced Twins are taking the Sussex art scene by storm - and it feels like bigger things are around the corner. Absolutely takes a closer look

Founded in 2017 by twin artists, ‘Ink Genius’ Stella Stevens and ‘Colour Queen’ Gemma MilesWilson, the Two Faced Twins create striking artwork and homeware for contemporary homes. Their Two Faced Twins brand has become well-known throughout the Sussex region, building a popular local following.

As an illustrator who graduated from Northbrook university in 2012, Stella has always worked exclusively in black and white, creating detailed scenes of her surroundings. Gemma is a textile designer and artist who attended Northbrook that same year as Stella. Striking colour, eclectic pattern and eccentric imagery are her forte.

Working from their studio on the Sussex coast, the twins collaborate on each piece of artwork. Stella creates their

“Our di erent perspectives make the work stronger in the end”

initial illustrations and Gemma works on them digitally, manipulating them and adding colour. Inspired by street scenery and architecture, featuring local scenes and vibrant colours, they sell their work online and in their busy seafront gallery in Worthing, West Sussex. It’s a colourful place to be, so Absolutely didn’t need to be asked twice when invited to visit and chat to Gemma about the twins’ success story.

Q We are guessing you were both pretty creative when you were younger…

A Yes, definitely. We were both very creative growing up, and art was always our favourite subject at school. Stella carried a sketchbook everywhere she went, constantly drawing what she saw, especially in cafés and on the street. I was always drawn to colour from a young age, with a stack of colouring books I filled using paints and felt tips.

Q Were the arts always the career path for you?

A Honestly, not at all. We felt completely lost in school, we didn’t know where we fit in or what we were actually good at. We knew we loved playing sport and making art, but did that mean we got good grades in those subjects? God no. Academic subjects felt like a foreign language to us. Stella was in the bottom set for everything, even art. She never worked the way they wanted her to. During her GCSE finals, she made this huge wire sculpture of a snake, covered it in papiermâché, and she absolutely loved it. But her teacher told her it looked “scrappy”. She didn’t care much about the grade though, she was proud of what she’d made. Stella remembers the observational drawing sessions in art class. The students were told to draw exactly what was in front of them. When Stella looked around at everyone else’s work, something always

stood out: she drew what she actually saw, every wrinkle, vein, shadow, and imperfection, while others drew what they thought they saw. Their drawings were neater, prettier, and always got the higher grades. Hers looked a little grotesque by comparison, but they were honest. We never realised that art could be a real career. We always saw it as a hobby. It wasn’t until our mid-20s that things started to click. We decided to combine our creative skills and use the uniqueness of being twins to build something di erent, a brand, a duo, and a shared creative path that finally made sense.

Q Before you launched Two Faced Twins, what were you working in respectively?

A Before we launched Two Faced Twins, I had just returned from teaching English in China and was working in a travel o ce. Stella was working two jobs, she was a gardener and a care assistant. Neither of

us were in creative roles at the time, but we were always being creative in one way or another individually. It was something we did purely out of love, never imagining it could turn into a career, until we decided to take a chance and build something of our own.

Q What inspired you to go into business together?

A It all started back in 2017. I was walking home from my o!ce job one day when I had a bit of an epiphany, I realised I couldn’t keep living for the weekends and bank holidays. That evening, I had a long heart-to-heart with Stella about how we could change things. We threw around loads of business ideas, from pancake makers, sandwich makers, to YouTubers, you name it!

Then Stella suggested something that just clicked: what if we became twin artists? It was like a lightbulb went o . We realised we had something really unique, not just as creatives, but as identical twins

with di erent styles. We saw a niche and instinctively knew it had potential. That was the moment Two Faced Twins was born. It actually took us a full year just to create a piece of artwork we were both happy with. We started out in our tiny garage, trying to combine our styles, and hating every single outcome. Once we finally cracked that, we had to figure out how to actually sell our work – and that was a whole di erent challenge.

Q How do you tend to create a new piece of work?

A We collaborate on every single piece of artwork. Stella starts by creating the initial black-and-white line drawings, and then I take over and work on them digitally –manipulating the composition, experimenting with layouts, and adding bold, vibrant colour. We have a long list of artwork requests from our followers and collectors, and we usually pick out the ones that inspire us the most, ones we know our audience will love too. Once we’ve chosen a subject, we visit the place in person, take lots of reference photos, and then Stella brings those home to begin her detailed illustrations. From there, I take her drawings and explore di erent colour variations until I find the one that clicks.

Q Do you work together seamlessly?

A On some pieces, yes, and on others, not so much! There’s definitely some back and forth involved.

It’s definitely not always plain sailing, but most of the time we’ve found a good rhythm and a way to work together that minimizes overlap and keeps the process smooth. Our di erent perspectives actually make the work stronger in the end.

Q Is Sussex a pretty big inspiration for you?

A Definitely! Stella draws a lot of inspiration from architecture, and Sussex is full of amazing, historic buildings that really fuel her creativity. For me, it’s all about the colours – the sea, the flowers, the plants, and the natural beauty around us. Being close to the Downs gives me endless inspiration from nature.

Q What would we find if we popped into your Worthing studio?

A You’d find a warm, friendly, and downto-earth space bursting with colour and joy! Our artwork covers the walls, and we also have our homeware collection on display – everything from umbrellas and deckchairs to smaller items like magnets, surface protectors, and cushions.

It’s a bright, cheerful, and welcoming place that really reflects who we are, and it’s always lovely to share that with visitors.

Q Is there a collection (or collections) you have created that you really love and why?

A The dog collection has been so much fun to create, we really love bringing those furry characters to life. But we’re also really excited about our upcoming seaside Art Deco-inspired collection. We’ve poured a lot of passion into it. It feels fresh and vibrant, and we can’t wait to share it with everyone.

Author Emily Edwards on how Lewes has left its indelible mark on her books to date

Moving from London to Lewes in 2014 with my (now) husband James was, for me, a kind of homecoming. I was born in Rodmell (a village a couple of miles outside Lewes and famous for Monks House – the home of Leonard and Virginia Woolf). Back in the 1980s my family – reluctantly – moved to Gloucestershire when I was just five and moving back to Lewes as an adult, I found memories came in surprisingly sensory ways. I could remember the sharpness of a flint wall against my chubby toddler hand, the malty smell of the Harvey’s brewery, spotting the glistening, sable head of a seal at Birling Gap. My memories provided a subtle but moving sense of familiarity, a kind of background hum of knowing. I knew this place as a very young child and now, as an adult I’ve grown to love it all over again.

My two novels The Herd (published in 2022) and now Private Lives (out on 19th June) are both set in fictional towns but very much inspired by Lewes (Lewsian friends while reading The Herd would often squawk, ‘You put Cli!e Bridge in the book!’ and ‘I can’t believe you included the pirate busker!’)

It was never a conscious decision to include Lewes and her (I always think of the place as female for some reason) environs in my novels. ‘She’ just sort of turned up on the page like some eccentric, bustling and entirely unignorable Aunt.

Both novels are broadly about life in small towns and what happens when a close community is fractured by controversy and passionately held opposing views. This has not happened (thank God!) to me in Lewes, but living so closely with friends and acquaintances I’d be lying if I said the possibility hadn’t crossed my mind. It can be all too easy to assume, due to proximity and mutual appreciation of the beauty and free-thinking spirit here, that us Lewisians share the same value systems, the same political beliefs – but of course, that’s not true! Some of us – perhaps especially us DFL (Down From London) types, with our electric bikes and colourfully dressed children – seem like carbon copies of each other, but when (in the name of research!) I’ve scratched below the surface, I’ve found (drum roll) many di!erences.

EMILY EDWARDS PHOTO BY MAXINE SILVER

It was something of a shock to discover, for example, that not all my school run compadres opposed Brexit, not all of them believe in vaccination and some, like my character Anna in Private Lives, think if someone is in a position of responsibility their private life – even their sex lives – should be matters of public concern. It was only during the editing process that I really became aware of how much I had drawn inspiration from this ancient little town. Re-reading my work there were many moments that I thought, ‘Ah – that’s Lewes!’ A scene, for example, where Abi (one of my more controversial and the object of Anna’s aforementioned ire) takes a moment in the park opposite her child’s school, unaware that she’s about to have her new life ripped apart. That park is – for those who know Lewes – the Grange, a flower filled, much loved beauty spot opposite my own kids’ school where from 3.15pm everyday my sons can often be found shrieking with joy and probably dangling from trees.

There’s another scene where dear Rosie – another central character in Private Lives – drives, knuckles white on the wheel to the sea to swim and scream her pain and anger into the waves. In moments of complete overwhelm, when the air in my lungs is so tight it burns, I’ve done the same, taking myself to Seaford or Birling Gap.

Fictionalised versions of the Downs also feature in both my books. In The Herd best friends Ash and Jack discover on a run that their wives have opposing views about children and vaccines. While in Private Lives, Rosie takes her new friend Abi up to a beautiful viewing point (in real life – the top of Chapel Hill by the Golf Club), where they look back at ‘the perfect neatness of the doll’s house town, a place where nothing bad could ever happen’… oh poor, naïve Rosie, she has no idea what is to come.

Yes, I’m sure many will spot echoes of East Sussex and Lewes in my books, but there are other, more subtle ways ‘she’ pops up. In Private Lives, everything unravels for my characters during an agonisingly tense meal at the opening of a small new restaurant in town. Having been in Lewes for a decade now, I really experience the huge impact small, independent businesses have here, they are really what keeps towns like Lewes so interesting and unique.

My next book is largely a road trip so less focused on one community, but I know that the heart of this special town will continue to inspire me in new, as yet, unforeseen ways.

Private Lives by Emily Edwards is out now. See more at penguin.co.uk

The top of Black Cap on the Downs – a!er a long slog up some 206 metres to the top, the 360 views are sensational. Being up there I feel simultaneously small and powerful. Bring snacks as you might want to hang out at the top for a while!

LASTING IMPRESSION

Dilsk in Brighton has caught the attention of food lovers everywhereand the Michelin Guide. Absolutely meets the duo behind it

Located within the iconic Drakes Hotel, on Brighton seafront, dilsk is the first joint venture from chef Tom Stephens and front of house manager Maddy Riches, who between them boast an impressive 40 years’ industry experience.

Now listed in the Michelin Guide, dilsk is receiving the plaudits its approach deserves – and we just had to find out a little more about the concept and how Tom and Maddy came to work together.

Q When did you two meet and how long ago did you first discuss the idea of opening a venue together?

A Maddy: We met while working at 64 Degrees, another small, family-run fine dining restaurant in Brighton. We worked there together for almost four years. I

remember one Christmas, after a shift, we were having a drink and Tom said, “We’d make a good team.” That was the seed being planted for me. Tom has always had the drive and ambition to open his own place, but once we started talking seriously about it, we realised it wasn’t just a dream, it was achievable. The opportunity at Drakes gave us the perfect stepping stone. It was a lower-risk route than opening a restaurant from scratch, but with enough freedom to build something that felt truly ours.

Q Why was Brighton perfect for dilsk?

A Tom: We both live here, with families we weren’t going to uproot, but even beyond that, Brighton is the perfect home for dilsk. I was really keen to showcase the incredible local produce we have on our doorstep. With both the South Downs and the Channel so close, the quality and variety are second to none. That also allowed us to be more sustainable in our sourcing, which was important from the beginning.

Q What does the name mean?

A Tom: Dilsk is a type of seaweed. There are two varieties, and we use pepper dilsk that’s foraged just along the coast. We wanted the name to reflect the local landscape and what’s available to us. The restaurant faces the sea, so the name felt like a natural connection to our surroundings. It creates a synergy between the space, the food, and the environment.

Q It’s just over two years since you opened. How has that time been?

A Maddy: There were definitely people who thought we were mad to open a fine dining restaurant two years ago! It’s not an easy industry, and it was (and still is) a really tough time. We had no real marketing budget, so we knew it would be a slow burn and that word of mouth would

be key. We learned a lot in that first year, made a few tweaks here and there, but ultimately, we stayed true to our vision. The business has grown considerably, which feels like a huge achievement. This year we have made some reinvestment into the space, that feels like a milestone. We still have quiet spells, but it does feel like the word is out now. That said, you can never take your eye o! the ball. There’s always something to improve or evolve.

Q From day one, what did you want to o er?

A Tom: We wanted to create a dining experience people would remember, food that creates a lasting impression, but in surroundings that are comfortable and unpretentious. I think we’ve achieved that. It’s about taking guests on a culinary journey using the best seasonal and local produce, in a space that feels welcoming and genuine.

Dilsk is co-owned by both of us, and there’s a shared passion between front of house and kitchen. We hope that balance is felt in every part of the guest’s experience, from the first hello to the final bite.

Q Why did you go down the tasting menu route?

A Tom: Tasting menus allow us to showcase more produce and be more sustainable, as they help us reduce waste. But more than that, they create a fuller, more immersive dining experience. That said, we’ve always wanted to be accessible. We o!er both a shorter five-course menu and a longer nine-course one, as well as a set menu during the week. It was never meant to be an exclusive, intimidating kind of place. Everyone is welcome.

Q How important is the drinks aspect to dilsk?

A Maddy: It’s hugely important. The wine pairings are a real labour of love. I try to find interesting and unexpected pairings, while still keeping them approachable. I really dislike how pretentious wine can be. I just want it to be delicious, tell a good story, and bring out another dimension in the food.

The cocktail list is always seasonal too, and we often use by-products from the kitchen. Like the rhubarb poaching liquor from a dessert, which ends up in one of our cocktails. It’s a fun and sustainable way to connect kitchen and bar, and keep things feeling modern and creative.

Q How do you feel about the acclaim you have received?

A Tom: It gives us motivation and validation. I always feel like there’s more to learn and more to improve, taking each dish and thinking how it can be elevated to the next level. So when people recognise what we’re doing, it’s a sign that we’re heading in the right direction. It’s not why we do it, but it’s definitely encouraging.

Chardonnay Goals

The new vintage of Gusbourne’s Chardonnay Guinevere has landed and it’s pure class. Flinty and gently oaked, with notes of hazelnut, lemon and white peach, it’s precise, layered, and efortlessly elegant. Aged on lees for added complexity, this is Gusbourne’s most awarded wine, and it’s not hard to taste why. gusbourne.com

CAN DO ATTITUDE

Numbers Wine has gone rogue (in a good way!) and canned its cult hit Bacchs Fizz – a skincontact pét-nat with notes of rhubarb, ginger, and just the right amount of funk. Crafted in their London urban winery from 100% Bacchus grapes, it’s the ultimate picnic flex. Toss it in your tote and prepare for compliments. numberswine.com

Ambriel’s Wendling Blanc de Blancs 2018 has been worth waiting for

Sip Smart

Wickhams is fast becoming the go-to for curated, characterful wines - from English classics to unexpected gems from around the globe. Their online shop is packed with handpicked bottles that overdeliver on flavour and charm. With their national delivery and expert picks, you are now just one click away from being the friend who always brings the good bottle. wickhamwine.co.uk

Ambriel’s latest release has been quietly biding its time - five and a half years on the lees, to be exact. Made from 100% estate-grown Chardonnay, the Wendling Blanc de Blancs 2018 is a finely tuned sparkler with elderflower on the nose, lemon sherbet through the middle, and a soft, honeyed finish. Elegant, expressive, and worth the wait. It’s named after the delicate bubble that wends its way to the top, and - charmingly - after co-founder Wendy Outhwaite’s playful nickname. Behind the bottle is Ambriel, a labour of love by Wendy and Charles Outhwaite, who traded high-powered careers for West Sussex’s greensand slopes. Their vineyard, planted in 2008, thrives in a "goldilocks climate"warm enough to ripen grapes, but cool enough to preserve razor-sharp acidity, perfect for sparkling wine. Every step, from hand-harvesting to blending, is done with obsessive attention to detail (palate, not wallet, as they say), and wines aren’t released until they’ve aged into their full potential. The result are bottles like the Wendling - a shimmering testament to English fizz!

The unconventional path to sustainable weight loss

Weight loss. Two words that spark a thousand emotions –especially for high-achieving women who feel like they’ve nailed life in every area… except this one. I know that story all too well.

For years, I was the woman who could ‘do it all’, until I hit the point where doing it all left me emotionally exhausted, physically burnt out, and stuck in a cycle of yo-yo dieting, emotional eating and self-sabotage. I didn’t need another meal plan. I needed

a wake-up call. Eventually, I had one. Today, I’m proud to be known as The Unconventional Weightloss Coach –helping women break free from the diet trap and heal their relationship with food, their bodies, and most importantly, themselves. My proven S.M.A.R.T formula has transformed hundreds of lives – not by enforcing more rules or restrictions, but by creating radical self-awareness, self-responsibility, and sustainable strategies that work in real life. Because weight loss isn’t just about food – it’s about freedom. If you’re tired of tracking every calorie, feeling guilty after eating a slice of birthday cake, or waking up every

Monday promising yourself "this is the week" then let’s talk about a better way.

WHY DIETS DON’T WORK ( AND WHAT DOES )

Most weightloss programs rely on willpower, motivation and discipline. All of which are in limited supply – especially when you’re juggling a career, caring for others, managing stress, and navigating the hormonal shifts that come with perimenopause, menopause, and beyond. They all wear o , fast. What you need is a strategy. One that works with your changing biology, not against it. One that respects your life, your responsibilities, and your emotional world. That’s where the S.M.A.R.T formula comes in.

THE SMART WAY: A BETTER WAY TO OPTIMAL HEALTH & WEIGHT MANAGEMENT

This isn’t about short-term results. It’s about longterm liberation. It’s about becoming the version of you who doesn’t need to think about, let alone do another diet ever again.

S LEEP

Quality sleep is the foundation of fat loss, hormone balance, and emotional regulation – it’s not a luxury, it’s a non-negotiable.

M INDFUL NUTRITION

This is all about understanding your hunger, honouring your cravings, and fuelling your body without the cycle of guilt.

ACTIVITY

Forget punishment from workouts –think joyful, sustainable movement that energises rather than exhausts.

R EST & RECOVERY

Fat loss doesn’t happen in hustle mode – it happens when your nervous system feels safe, supported, and allowed to slow down.

T IME FOR SELF

Prioritising yourself isn’t selfish – it’s essential. Time for self reconnects you to your needs, boundaries, and brilliance.

MY TOP 5 TIPS FOR SUSTAINABLE WEIGHT LOSS

(That Also Support Your Sanity)

WHAT WOMEN NEED TO HEAR ABOUT NUTRITION

When you’re constantly under-eating, skipping meals, or surviving on cofee and adrenaline your body no longer trusts you. Blood sugar crashes, energy dips, and constant cravings are not a lack of willpower – they’re your body's survival mechanisms.

My simple approach to nutrition is about nourishment, not restriction. That means:

• Prioritising high-protein and high fibre meals to stabilise energy and reduce cravings.

• Eating every 3-4 hours to support blood sugar balance and hormonal function.

• Focusing on real, nutrient dense food first – not perfection, but presence.

• Learning to listen to hunger and satiety cues again.

• And yes, still enjoying the occasional glass of wine, dessert, or pizza if you want them – without guilt.

Stop starting over every Monday. If your current method has you repeatedly falling o f the wagon, then it’s time to replace the wagon with a more reliable vehicle.

Remember you’re human. I teach my clients self compassion, not punishment.

Ditch the all-or-nothing mindset. Progress doesn’t come from perfection. It comes from consistency, 80% of the time, not 100.

Create non-negotiables, not to-do lists. Simple habits like daily hydration, 30 minutes of activity, or prioritising protein at each meal can change your life when done consistently.

Do the inner work. Food is often a mirror. When you begin to reconnect with your needs, regulate your nervous system and rewrite your beliefs - everything changes. This is what makes the transformation sustainable.

The weight loss industry has made women feel like they’re failures for decades. I’m here to tell you – you’re not. It’s time to change that narrative and create your new empowered story. You don’t need to starve your body, hate your reflection, or keep outsourcing your worth to the scales. What you do need is support, strategy, and space to reconnect with yourself. And when you do? You don’t just lose weight – you gain your life back.

NAOMI HOLBROOK

TRIP UP

One Worthing-based expert on how you can stay well on your travels

Looking forward to getting away this summer? The following tips should help to make sure your holiday is memorable for all the right reasons.

Bolster your defences. A strong immune system is important at all times, but especially so when we travel. The stu y confines of an airplane cabin are the perfect breeding ground for germs, especially if you’re cooped up for two to three hours at a time. Echinacea purpurea is one of the best immune-supportive herbs there is, so make sure this makes it into your hand luggage. Echinacea Lozenges are particularly flight-friendly, but you should ideally start to prime your immune system two to four weeks before you travel.

Support your digestive health with a good prebiotic supplement before and when you travel. Molkosan Fruit Drink for example can help establish the right environment within which important infection-fighting bacteria can flourish, revitalising your digestive system. Once abroad, don’t eat anything that looks undercooked or raw and avoid bu et food that may not have been kept at the right temperature. By far the most common cause of tummy trouble abroad, and diarrhoea especially, is dirty or contaminated water. Only drink bottled or canned drinks and don’t assume the tap water in your hotel is safe to drink. Remember also not to use ice in your drinks.

If you do succumb to ‘holiday tum’, drink plenty of water to help prevent

dehydration; experts recommend between two and three litres daily, especially if you’re in a hot climate. For diarrhoea, nausea and stomach ache, Silicol gel, a liquid silicic acid supplement, three times daily can help. Children with diarrhoea must consult a healthcare professional and medical advice must always be sought if symptoms do not improve within 24 to 36 hours, or if diarrhoea is accompanied by severe pain, vomiting, fever or loss of blood.

If mosquitoes and biting insects are a problem, a good insect repellent

on exposed skin should help. In some parts of the world, such as Africa and South America, you’ll need more than a spray repellent, but more often than not, mosquitoes are more of a nuisance than a health hazard. Natural remedies can be an e!ective option. Neem seed extract for example, is a popular alternative to DEET-containing sprays. The scent of neem masks your individual scent, making you less easy to find. Have fun in the sun but do so safely. Always wear a good SPF, avoid sitting in the sun when it’s at its strongest and

prepare your skin before you travel. If you do get caught short, Aloe vera applied topically can help to soothe dry, reddened or sun-damaged skin. Finally, if you’re feeling a little overtired or jetlagged on arrival, A Vogel’s Sleep Well Dissolvable Granules should help you to drift o! in your new time zone. Bon voyage!

I am here for the afternoon, and first up is my Intraceutical Oxygen Facial, which is a high-tech treatment designed for significant results. Using pressurised oxygen and low-weight hyaluronic acid, the treatment presses serums deep into the skin, promising to instantly plump fine lines and boosts elasticity. It’s a peculiar sensation accompanied by an unusual whirring noise (though not uncomfortable) and I emerge actually glowing. Then it’s upstairs for a lymphatic drainage treatment, which I imagined to be a massage. Instead, I am zipped into an inflating plastic suit from the chest down, and left to lie in peace for some time while the suit vibrates enthusiastically. This encourages the natural drainage of lymph, reducing swelling and improving circulation. It’s not unpleasant and afterwards I feel lighter and somehow taller. From there I spend a relaxing hour dawdling in the sauna, steam room and salt cave, where inhaling Himalayan salt is an aid to respiration and relaxation. After navigating IVF, pregnancy, and postpartum recovery in my thirties, I hit my forties determined to take back control of my fitness. So when I had the chance to try a FOLD Reformer bed at home, I jumped at the opportunity – and enlisted expert trainer Aimee Long to help elevate my workouts.

Aimee has trained celebrities and royalty, but her approach is refreshingly down-to-earth. She mixes Pilates, barre, strength

training, and HIIT to create workouts that challenge without breaking you. As a fellow busy mum, she also understands the need for efcient sessions – which was perfect for my schedule. We trained virtually twice a week for a month using the FOLD bed, hand weights, and Pilates accessories. Each session was a full-body burn. Aimee pushed me with combinations of dynamic Reformer moves – tricep dips, inner thigh pulses, roundthe-worlds – and floor-based cardio and strength work that had me breathless and sore

in the best way. She adjusted the plan as we went, helping me target ankle stability and core strength, while focusing on form over intensity. What stood out most was Aimee’s personalised, holistic approach. Rather than focusing on weight loss, she encouraged me to reframe my goals: to build strength, improve mobility, and challenge my body with purpose. At 42, I can honestly say I feel stronger and more connected to my body than ever before.

SPOTTERS TREND

At our recent visit to WOW!house 2025 at Chelsea Harbour, we discovered a wealth of design trends reflecting the contemporary pulse of interiors –where craftsmanship, sustainability, narrative, and sensory immersion converge across 22 exquisitely curated spaces. Here are the dominant themes and notable highlights shaping the conversation in 2025.

1. CRAFTSMANSHIP & QUALITY MATERIALS

A deference to expert craftsmanship permeated the show, with furniture and finishes deeply rooted in quality. Highlights included Tom Faulkner’s sculptural dining table, Sta!an Tollgård’s bespoke study pieces, and period joinery by Atkey & Co for Shalini Misra’s entry – all embodying the kind of attention to detail that outlasts fleeting trends. Romanos Brihi and Venetia Rudebeck’s kitchen exemplified this ethos, blending marble, brass, oak, and plaster in a tactile symphony – anchored by Gaggenau appliances and antique pieces that give the space personality.

2. SUSTAINABILITY & REPURPOSE CULTURE

WOW!house 2025 layered its creative ambition with eco-conscious materials: modular façades made from 3D-printed bioplastics, flooring and fabric walls designed for reuse, and rehoming of furnishings post-show. This is a deliberate shift toward a circular creative economy.

3. ORGANIC COLOUR PALETTES & BOTANICALS

Natural hues dominated – from soft olives and earthy terracotta to deep forest tones. The verdant courtyard, garden terrace, and multiple rooms showcased lush greenery and wallpapers adorned with foliage motifs, reinforcing the biophilic resurgence across interiors.

4. TEXTURAL LAYERING & PATTERN PLAY

2025’s interiors asked visitors to linger through layered textures and patterns. From intricate wallpaper and fabric combinations (print-on-print) to ceiling treatments – think bamboo-clad or tented overhead drapery – the spaces encouraged a "layers rich in depth" aesthetic. We saw bold tongue-in-cheek stripes on terraces, verdant botanical prints, and tactile panelling that brought warmth and personality to refined spaces.

5. CEILING AS A FIFTH WALL

An unexpected co-star: ceilings. Whether painted, upholstered, clad in bamboo, or tented with fabric, they contributed significantly to ambience, marking a departure from the ubiquitous white ceiling and adding inviting intimacy to rooms.

&. ASYMMETRY & CURATED CLUTTER

There was a tangible shift away from perfectly symmetrical, 'matched' interiors. Designers like Kelly Hoppen and Ben Pentreath endorsed asymmetry and collected interiors – spaces

evolved over time with "quiet accumulation" of objects, art, and vintage layers, intentionally curated into rich vignettes.

7. TILE - DRENCHING FOR COHESION

This year’s embrace of tile drenching – floor-to-ceiling tiling using unified patterns – emerged as a refined trend. Ideal for compact bathrooms and kitchens, it’s a visually seamless way to unify a space while remaining customizable to palette and texture preferences.

8. NATURAL MATERIALS IN EVERYDAY APPLICATIONS

From limestone and terracotta garden paths to sisal, linen, rattan, and polished brass, natural materials were not mere accent items, but core players in creating earthy comfort. Adam Ellis’s tree-motif wall in the dining room and woolsisal flooring reinforced this familiar-but-elevating motif.

9. NOSTALGIC AND ARTS & CRAFTS INFLUENCES

Rooms like Chad Dorsey’s Arts & Crafts drawing room was anchored in British-American stylistic crossovers – floral wallpapers framed architecturally, rich handcrafted rugs, and folk references – highlighting the enduring appeal of tradition and nostalgia.

10. PURPOSEFUL ZONES & SOCIAL SETTINGS

Multiple spaces included intentional "social points" – from cocktail trolleys and tea trays to snug reading

nooks, dens, and media rooms. Toni Black’s Gathering Bar embraced this concept, showcasing the renewed value of dedicated spaces for social connection.

!!. MULTISENSORY & STORY- DRIVEN EXPERIENCES

WOW!house feels like walking through a story, not merely a showcase. Beyond visuals, Jo Malone’s signature fragrances infused rooms, and narrative-driven pieces (such as Alessandra Branca’s "fairytale" bedroom or Victorian fabrics in smuggled skylit rooms) created immersive emotional layers.

!2. HERITAGE ARCHITECTURE REIMAGINED

Externally, Adam Architecture’s Georgian-inspired façade and Darren Price’s Atkey & Co doorway set an evocative classical stage for the showhouse – a declarative gesture connecting context to crafted interiors.

IN BRIEF

THE WOW!HOUSE 2&25 AESTHETIC

• Tactile Luxury – Artisanal materials and joinery define spaces beyond utilitarian plans.

• Mindful Design – Sustainability is woven into structure, literal and ethical.

• Warm, Wild Palettes – Organic hues, plant life, and natural textures dominate.

• Layered Depth – Patterns, fabrics, and ceiling treatments craft enveloping interiors.

• Curated Stories – Each room acts as a chapter: collectable, sensory, soulful.

For anyone seeking inspiration that balances the luxurious with the lived-in, the sustainable with the sumptuous, it’s a masterclass in creating deeply personal and enduring spaces.

How one Sussex parent switched from police ofcer to baby swim teacher

LAURA ROGERS BEFORE

Laura Rogers set up her baby swim school franchise, Turtle Tots South West Sussex, back in 2017 following the birth of her baby daughter – and she’s never looked back.

Having been a front-line police o!cer for over 12 years, Laura was no stranger to juggling a stressful, demanding and often dangerous career. Yet, she loved working for the police and just before she fell pregnant, she secured a dream promotion to work for the Roads Policing Unit – a role she had aspired to for many years. She was over the moon and was looking forward to getting back into her career post-maternity leave.

“I returned to the police force nine months after my baby daughter was born, and I quickly realised that my priorities had changed drastically,” she explains. “For the first time in my life, I had a reason to

come home safe every night and I started to appreciate just how dangerous the job could be. Being a police o!cer is very rewarding, but it is also very stressful, and it takes a lot of dedication, hard work and sacrifice, especially working shifts around the clock with unsociable hours.”

While on maternity leave, Laura had been taking her daughter to baby swimming classes at Turtle Tots in Hampshire. She loved spending some relaxing time bonding with her new baby daughter in the pool and meeting and building friendships with lots of like-minded parents. Later, when the franchisee put an advert out looking for a baby swim teacher, a seed was planted, and Laura began to realise that there might be another career out there waiting for her. In 2017 she decided to leave her job in the police force and to take a three-year career break.

“My grandfather sadly passed away the day before my daughter’s first birthday and he left me some inheritance money. I wanted to do something worthwhile with it and knew I loved the baby swim lessons, so I enquired into buying a Turtle Tots territory and decided to take the leap using the money left to me, to buy the business and fund my training,” Laura says.

Laura completed her STA Level 2 Award in teaching swimming in April 2017, before completing the Turtle Tots and STA baby and pre-school training. She spent the next few months sourcing local pools to hold her lessons, while setting up the business and finding customers

before she started o!cially teaching in September 2017 – and finally launched Turtle Tots South West Sussex.

“I know from experience that when you’ve worked hard climbing the career ladder in a certain job it is easy to feel trapped, especially in something like the police force. It can also feel very daunting to walk away from a secure job with regular pay,” Laura adds. “It is a huge risk, but it was the best decision I’ve ever made. Not having to work shifts and being around for school holidays and Christmas has been such a huge benefit from both a parenting and a personal wellbeing perspective. That kind of work life balance just wouldn’t have been possible as a police o!cer.”

Laura was also surprised at how many of the skills she had developed during her time with the police have been transferrable in her role as a swim teacher. “I learned very early on that some days, teaching a group of excitable toddlers takes as much patience, communication and resilience as walking the high street on a Friday night! Just like in the police, you also need to be able to problem solve and think on your feet when your lessons aren’t going quite the way that you want. So, from that point of view, it was an invaluable experience,” she explains. From the perspective of running her baby swim business, the leadership skills Laura gained while building her career with the police force have also been of great use to her now. “Besides teaching babies and children to swim, which is by far the best job in the world, I love the freedom that running the business gives me, especially being a single parent. I am there for my daughter. I take her to school every day and I pick her up most nights. I am around for school assemblies, sports days and school trips. It makes me so proud to be able to have my daughter around the business, to be part of the journey and to see her mummy at work.”

Laura’s swim lessons are based in the Arun District of West Sussex and Worthing. There are also Turtle Tots franchise territories currently available in Shoreham, Brighton and Hove, and parts of Kent too.

“Working for the police was a great career and it worked at that stage in my life, but sometimes life throws you curve balls and forces you to think outside of what you had imagined your future plan to be,” Laura says. “My advice to anyone looking to make the leap and switch to a new career is to make sure that it is something that you have a genuine interest or passion for.”
