FOCUS ON Skin lesions

What are skin lesions?

A skin lesion is an abnormal area of skin which differs in appearance to surrounding skin, including moles, cysts, lipomas, birthmarks, blemishes, sun or age-related skin changes and skin tags. In the same way you visit the optician or dentist, regular skin checks are recommended. In this appointment skin lesions will be checked with a dermatoscope (a light source with a magnifying lens).

What are the surgical/non surgical options for skin lesions?

• Freeze treatment with cryotherapy and shave removal can be used for benign skin lesions

• Scars can occasionally be treated with steroid injections

• Surgical excision and biopsy is sometimes necessary for moles that have changed in appearance, lumps, bumps and skin cancers

All the most stylish looks for summer weddings

ABSOLUTELY’S May issue highlights

We've started thinking about hats at Absolutely. It's our annual Weddings special issue, and hats and for many of us, that means thinking about what to wear. A whole summer wardrobe of dresses, separates and hats is on the cards, while brides are planning dresses, shoes, jewellery and more. And we're not forgetting grooms this time, as we take a look at bespoke tailoring and the importance of getting the details right, as well as the all-important wedding day grooming. Plus we're thinking about honeymoon destinations, and our recommendation right now is Turks and Caicos, with its impossibly beautiful beaches. All this and the usual mix of exhibitions, events, fashion, food and interiors. Enjoy May.

A look at some of the makers who will be exhibiting at this month’s Ceramic Art London

Ceramic Art London, a showcase for the world’s best potters, returns to Olympia this month, showcasing work by 120 makers. Makers come from all over Europe and as far afield as Canada and Korea to exhibit at Europe’s premier ceramics fair, which is known for its diversity of forms, going beyond (but still incorporating) traditional vessels.

Some makers focus on the figurative such as Sally MacDonell, who is continually fascinated by people. Based in her studio in Bath, she explores the human condition by modelling the female form and drawing from visual anecdotes carefully collected and stored to later emerge as figures. She finds her inspiration in many places: Medieval Netherlandic wood carvings, African art, weathered buildings with textured surfaces, extravagant fashion catwalks, and women gossiping in supermarket queues. All the figures are hand built using slabs of thin clay and coils and modelled spontaneously from the inside, squeezing and pinching the clay together, before pushing out. Included on her stand will be three hand built and glazed ceramic pieces of torsos with winged hats which measure 36cm high and have a price tag of £1,800 each.

Ceramicists come from a host of di erent backgrounds. Erum Aamir was formerly a physicist and studied in Pakistan. Erum, who is based in Manchester, is new to the fair and creates intricate porcelain sculptures which are inspired by the microscopic study of plant forms. Under a microscope, nature reveals its wonders di erently to an artist than to a scientist. Sometimes the compositions found in the artist’s imaginative interpretations bypass what is found in nature. This blurred line between ‘reality’ and ‘created reality’ is manifested in her practice. She brings a 16cm high, hand-build porcelain sculpture titled ‘Furtivus’, from 2023 which retails at £825.

FACING PAGE: Erum Aamir
ABOVE: Sally MacDonell RIGHT: Erum Aamir 'Furtivus’, 2023 LEFT: Sue Mundy

Lucy Baxendale uses surrealist automatism to create detailed drawings which become the starting point for her porcelain pieces. Based in rural Herefordshire, she is drawn to the journey from two-dimensional sketches to threedimensional sculptures and explores the shifting relationships between the lines in her drawings as these lines transition into tangible forms. These 3-D drawings are intentionally unglazed and stained to echo the essence of a sketch. Among her pieces on show will be her sculptural vases which are inspired by automatic drawings in her sketchbook and built using pinch and slab techniques.

Caroline Egleston studied ceramics in northern Italy where she absorbed the visual stimulation of Italian colour and pattern and on returning to the UK, set up her ceramic workshop, creating ceramic ‘scapes’ for interior and exterior spaces. Her shapes can be flat like tiles or they can play with the idea of dimension with folds, twist and turns to create movement. She says: ‘my

pieces dance like big, joyful daubs of paint’. This can be seen in ‘Woven landscape’ ceramic, which was part of the Surrey Arts Trail at RSPB Farnham Heath in 2024.

Multi award-winning artist Thomas Bohle was born in Austria and has exhibited all over Europe as well as in Tokyo, Korea, New Zealand and UAE. For sale at the fair will be a wheel-thrown, double-walled stoneware bowl with a cobalt green glaze.

Lise Herud Braten is increasingly popular and one to watch. Her primary interests lie in creating decorative and sculptural forms with highly textured, expressive surfaces. The work is deeply rooted in the rugged landscape she grew up in in Norway, imbuing a sense of place, timelessness and quiet beauty within each piece, as if they were found, rather than made. She employs a variety of techniques, often manipulating, carving and altering thrown forms to create organic shapes and structures. She works in porcelain and stoneware, applying a multi layered surface finish of oxides, slips, engobes, glazes and ash. She will

showcase a variety of wheel-thrown and hand-carved open vessels including a moon vase produced in black and red stoneware clay with layered engobes, oxides and crackle glaze and dolomite glaze inside.

Cleo Mussi is a renowned maverick ceramic artist who creates spectacular works using reclaimed tableware and ornaments. Her career has evolved over the last 35 years encompassing one-o artworks for exhibitions and themed touring national shows as well as commissions for hospitals, schools, arts centres and public spaces. She recently completed a life-size portrait of Greta Thunberg for the Fries International Museum of Ceramics in the Netherlands and in 2022 she was selected as an award artist for the British Ceramics Biennial in Stoke on Trent. She will showing a direct mosaic from reclaimed ceramic on sustainably sourced plywood titled, Mirrored Branches with Doves that retails at £990.

Rich Miller is known to many as a judge on Channel 4's popular ‘Great Pottery Throwdown’. He has worked in ceramics for over 20 years. His current work makes reference to historical design patterns and draws on themes of British colonialism and the way in which the UK has been enriched by an eclectic mix of cultural styles. Among his pieces is a thrown and handbuilt crown on press moulded bricks with a white zircon glaze which is titled Capitalism is King and priced at £2,000. 9 - 11 May ceramicartlondon.com

Garden PARTY

Exploring Cecil Beaton’s passion for gardens and flowers at the Garden Museum

This summer the Garden Museum will present the first exhibition to explore Sir Cecil Beaton’s (1904-1980) passion for gardens and flowers, and the inspiration that they provided him in his creative work as a photographer, designer and artist.

Best known for his iconic and glamorous fashion photography, Sir Cecil Beaton had a bouquet of creative talents: he was also an accomplished costume and set designer for film, theatre and ballet; a gifted painter and illustrator; and in 1937 he was appointed court photographer to the British Royal Family. Cecil Beaton’s Garden Party will be the first exhibition to examine the common thread weaving through all aspects of Beaton’s artistic work: gardens and flowers.

Tracing Beaton’s horticultural journey through his gardens at Ashcombe House and Reddish House in Wiltshire, the exhibition comprises photographs, paintings, drawings, costume and set design, many of which have never been publicly displayed before. It will include Beaton’s personal diaries, photographs of friends and family gathering in his gardens, opera and ballet costume sketches and dresses of his own design. In looking to his gardens, Cecil Beaton’s Garden Party will explore the distinct role flowers played in developing Beaton’s creative practice; from pioneering the use of painted and fresh flowers as backdrops for fashion photography and

Royal portraits, to lavish floral installations created for parties with flowers from his own gardens, to the famous floral costumes worn by Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady (1964). Beaton created floral displays from a young age: for his family; in his rooms at Cambridge University; and for the society wedding of his sister Nancy Beaton, when he collaborated with floral designer Constance Spry. This fascination with flowers informed his creative practice as a photographer and he would often incorporate fresh flowers into his Vogue fashion

shoots, as seen in photographs in the exhibition including a portrait of model Penelope Tree from 1970. A selection of Royal portraits of Queen Elizabeth II (then Princess Elizabeth), the Queen Mother, and Princess Margaret illustrate how he imaginatively incorporated painted backdrops and fresh flowers and encouraged them to pose outside to provide a fresh and powerful new look to images of the monarchy.

The exhibition also explores Beaton’s work as a designer for opera and ballet, and his long professional relationship with choreographer Frederick Ashton, Founder Choreographer of The Royal Ballet. Beaton’s understanding of plants and their forms inspired the fresh and lifelike nature of his designs, with careful consideration to floral form, colours and materials. As an o cial war photographer for the British Ministry of Information during World War Two, he became fascinated by bamboo gardens in China, which inspired his set design for the opera Turandot.

Beaton was a keen and enthusiastic gardener. At Ashcombe House, where he moved in 1930, the garden provided flowers to decorate his dinner parties and weekend social gatherings. Beaton’s personal diaries illustrate the special relationship he developed with his first garden. It also became the backdrop and inspiration for Beaton’s ‘Fête Champêtre’ in 1937, a theatrical fancy dress summer party attended by 300 guests, including many of the ‘Bright Young Things’. For this grand gathering hosted in the garden at Ashcombe, he created a pastoral pleasure ground, with waiters in animal masks and a marquee decorated with flowers. Beaton had three costume changes, designed in collaboration with the Oscar-winning costumier Karinska. A highlight of the exhibition is the Surrealist rose coat he designed and wore as a party host, presented alongside photographs of the party from the National Portrait

Gallery and the Condé Nast archive. Later Beaton moved to Reddish House, where he lived from 1947 until his death in 1980. Beaton spent many years developing the gardens, in which he created large flower beds and areas for cutting gardens, built an indoor winter garden and purchased adjoining land to create a water garden. The house was frequented by countless of Beaton’s celebrity friends, and he would often photograph them among the flowers.

Cecil Beaton’s Garden Party is curated by Garden Museum Curator Emma House and will be designed by artist and designer Luke Edward Hall, who has been researching Cecil Beaton’s gardens and work for many years.

& NATURE ART

In the run-up to Chelsea Flower show, Philip Mould Gallery takes a new look at the flower paintings of Cedric Morris

Anew exhibition at Philip Mould & Company brings together an exuberant selection of Cedric Morris’ flower paintings that have inspired and informed the reinvigoration of the artist’s historic Su olk garden over the past two years.

Benton End – a Grade II listed 16th-century house on the outskirts of Hadleigh - was the home and garden of artist-plantsman Cedric Morris (1889-1982) and his lifelong partner Arthur Lett-Haines (1894-1978). It was also where they ran the East Anglian School of Painting and Drawing, a place where art, horticulture and community thrived side by side.

In a fascinating intersection of painting and

plant research, some of the works on display have directly helped with the identification and replanting of long-lost varieties, ensuring that Morris' garden once again blooms with the flowers he originally planted over 50 years ago, fine examples of which are Foxglove (1932), Flowers in a Portuguese Landscape (1968), September Diagram (Early 1940s), and Summer Garden Flowers (1944). Morris was one of the earliest and fiercest critics of pesticides, championing an approach to horticulture defined by biodiversity, sustainability, and naturalistic planting; principles that remain profoundly relevant today. His paintings, such as Natura Morta (1947), were often peppered with subtle references to this broader philosophy and beliefs, as well as his adoration for

“SOME OF THE WORKS HAVE HELPED WITH THE IDENTIFICATION AND REPLANTING OF LONG-LOST VARIETIES”

specific species. Indeed, he famously bred tall bearded irises, naming 90 cultivars, many of which carry the ‘Benton’ prefix. Opening in conjunction with the RHS Chelsea Flower Show (20-24 May 2025), Garden to Canvas anticipates the reopening of Benton End’s Garden to the public in 2026. Head gardener James Horner explains: “We have painstakingly cleaned, weeded and repaired the garden over the past two years, and we are now well placed to build the main pathways, restore Morris’ pond and form sinuous beds,”

He adds: “Watching the surviving flora gain strength under our strong hand yet organic approach has been one of the most rewarding aspects of the project so far. Soon, with the reintroduction of hundreds of

plants Morris grew and painted, the garden will be vibrant and abundant again.”

As a backdrop for ‘Landscape, Life and Still Life, birds, animals, flowers, and design tending to the absolute’, as the prospectus put it, the garden of Benton End not only served as an ideal location for painting en plein air but also as a creative studio for horticultural experimentation. Garden to Canvas highlights the deep connection between Cedric Morris’ art and horticulture, o ering new insight into how gardening and plant husbandry influenced his artistic creativity, and how, in turn, his paintings are still shaping the garden’s future.

Chelsea in BLOOM

London’s free flower festival returns to SW3 with a fashion theme

Chelsea in Bloom, the worldclass floral art show and London’s largest free flower festival, returns this spring with the theme ‘Flowers in Fashion’. Celebrating its 20th year, the streets of Chelsea will be transformed with floral creations once again, adorning the frontages of more than 115 businesses, shops and restaurants, from Ralph Lauren and Hackett to Brunello Cucinelli, RIXO and Temperley London, with inspiration taken from iconic fashion movements, style icons and muses, and honouring Chelsea’s legacy as one of the world’s most stylish destinations. Produced by Cadogan in collaboration with the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), Chelsea in Bloom extends the Chelsea Flower Show out into the local neighbourhood. Large scale installations will spring up across the area inspired by the ‘Flowers in Fashion’ theme, including giant yellow wellington boots under a sea of umbrellas, a tongue-in-cheek celebration of the British weather and nod to the Sloane Ranger on Sloane Square; a 4m high punk’s head with striking floral mohawk on the King’s Road; a stylish handbag and a spectacle of the roaring ’20s at Duke of York

“CHELSEA HAS BEEN AT THE HEART OF SO MANY FASHION MOVEMENTS”

Square. In honour of its recent transformation into a beautiful 1km green boulevard, Sloane Street will also boast three beautiful displays, including giant Elton John-inspired sunglasses and a model in a couture gown promenading, with a nod to local heroine Jane Austen.

This year, Chelsea in Bloom will partner with two special charities. In support of the British Fashion Council Foundation, supporting the growth and success of the UK fashion industry through education, mentoring and talent development, visitors will be able to pledge donations throughout the week and purchase exclusive event t-shirts, with all profits going to the charity.

Chelsea in Bloom will also be working with The Confetti Club for a third year, granting another life for leftover fresh petals to turn to confetti, then sold to raise funds for Cancer Research UK.

In its most sustainable year yet, floral foam has been banned from use within displays. This change not only supports the RHS in their e orts to promote responsible floristry, but promises visitors an exciting opportunity to discover true creativity in participants’ designs.

Gold, Silver, Bronze and Merit awards will be awarded to participants by RHS judges alongside Lifestyle judges, in addition to the top awards for ‘Best Floral Display’, ‘Highly Commended’ and the ‘Innovation Award’, with winners announced on 20 May.

As the home of the most elegant tailors and milliners of the 19th Century, to the birthplace of the punk era in the 1970s, Chelsea has been at the heart of so many fashion movements. Today, it is home to the world’s leading fashion houses alongside inspiring creatives and this year’s event is set to transform the neighbourhood into the most beautiful runways yet.

A CULINARY JOURNEY

Exploring the history of San Carlo Restaurants

San Carlo Restaurants has etched its name into the annals of the UK dining scene as a symbol of Italian culinary excellence. Established in 1992, the brand has enjoyed a trajectory marked by growth, innovation, and a steadfast commitment to authentic Italian cuisine. From its humble beginnings to becoming a beloved institution, the history of San Carlo Restaurants is a story of passion, perseverance, and a dedication to flavour.

THE BEGINNING: A VISION COMES TO LIFE

The journey of San Carlo begins with its founder, Carlo Distefano. Originally from Sicily, Distefano brought with him a deep appreciation for Italian culinary traditions. The first San Carlo restaurant opened in the heart of Birmingham, a city that was, and still is, a melting pot of cultures. It quickly became known for its vibrant atmosphere and authentic dishes, setting the standard for Italian dining in the UK. Distefano’s vision was clear: to provide diners with not just food, but an experience that celebrated the richness

of Italian culture. With a keen focus on fresh ingredients and traditional recipes, the first San Carlo restaurant laid the groundwork for a brand that would soon expand beyond Birmingham.

EXPANSION AND GROWTH

The success of the original San Carlo restaurant led to a remarkable expansion. In the late 1990s, the brand began to grow, with new locations opening not just in Birmingham, but in other major cities across the UK. By prioritising quality and consistency, each new establishment upheld the standards set by the original restaurant.

The San Carlo experience goes beyond just food; it encompasses ambiance and service. The restaurants are designed to reflect the warmth of Italian hospitality, creating a space where guests feel welcome and valued. This commitment to excellence resonated with diners, leading to a loyal customer base that continued to grow.

LANDMARK EVENTS AND RECOGNITION

As the San Carlo brand solidified its presence in the UK, it garnered numerous accolades that underscored its reputation as a leader in the industry. The restaurant group received various awards for its exceptional food quality and innovative dining experiences. This recognition helped to elevate the status of San Carlo Restaurants, making them a preferred choice for locals and tourists alike.

THE EVOLVING MENU: TRADITION MEETS INNOVATION

One of the hallmarks of San Carlo Restaurants is its ability to adapt while

staying true to its roots. The menu has evolved over the years to include a range of dishes that reflect both traditional Italian cuisine and modern culinary trends. Seasonal ingredients are a focal point, ensuring that the menu remains fresh and exciting. Signature dishes such as wood-fired pizzas, handmade pasta, and fine seafood o er guests an authentic taste of Italy.

A BRIGHT FUTURE

As of 2025, San Carlo Restaurants continue to thrive, with several locations operating across London, Manchester, and beyond. The brand’s commitment to authenticity and quality, combined with its innovative approach to Italian cuisine, has ensured its place in the competitive landscape of the UK dining scene. Looking forward, the future appears promising – with plans for continued expansion and a focus on sustainability and community engagement, the company is poised to remain a staple of Italian dining in the UK. The journey

that began in Birmingham in 1992 has transformed into a rich history of passion, flavour, and an unwavering commitment to providing an unparalleled dining experience. San Carlo Restaurants stand not just as eateries, but as ambassadors of Italian culinary culture, reminding us that food is much more than sustenance – it’s a celebration of life.

ABSOLUTELY eats out… Bombay Bustle

Indian fine dining, in train carriage-themed surroundings

St epping into Bombay Bustle is like walking into a Wes Anderson dream of Mumbai.

The restaurant’s interiors are a rich, transportive blend of colonial nostalgia and Deco glamour — all brass railings, marbled floors, and deep jade leather banquettes that whisper of first-class train journeys from a bygone era. Inspired by the city’s dabbawalas and the rush of its railway system, the space hums with movement, but there’s a quiet elegance to its choreography. The lower dining area channels

a luxe train carriage, complete with overhead luggage racks, while upstairs shifts gears into a softer palette, with muted pinks, and curved booths. It’s theatrical without being themeparkish, and every detail — from the vintage ceiling fans to the intricate tiling — feels carefully plotted, like a frame in a film. Bombay Bustle doesn’t just evoke a place; it creates a world. And the food is excellent. We start with samosa papdi chaat, which is a tasty mix of chickpeas, coriander salsa and crispy, spicy chaat, with pretty little samosas. A trio of dosa with duck is equally pretty, and the duck is an unusual but delicious

“A blend of colonial nostalgia and Deco glamour”

filling. Then come the lamb chops, which are menorably excellent. Described simply as “Cornwall lamb, pickling spices, pickled onion,” this is a signature dish thanks to its 24-hour marinade that leaves the meat soft and buttery with layers of spice and a smooth, elegant flavour.

A rich and creamy chicken tikka makhani – charred chicken, fenugreek, creamy tomato sauce – comes in a ti n tin, along with the house dabba dhal (black lentils cooked overnight, butter, fenugreek), while naans are thin, crispy and blackened with lots of butter and garlic, just as they should be. It’s all pretty filling and very moreish. For dessert we can’t resist a trio of kulfi, which seems to have disappeared from many menus but makes a refreshing palate cleanser. Rose and sa ron flavours are delicate yet distinct, and the kulfi texture is intriguingly satisfying. From an impressive wine list I enjoy a German Riesling, that makes a happy if unlikely match for Indian cuisine. Bombay Bustle is a winner.

Savoury Sweetcorn French Toast with

Cherry Tomato Salsa

Serves 6

Savoury will always win over sweet for me, but no more so than in a French toast recipe. This version is creamy, substantial, has an acidic hit from the salsa and - like all the best things - is topped with a shower of grated cheese. This is one of my favourite savoury breakfasts and is a great crowd-pleaser.

I have to credit Stacey O'Gorman as the inspiration for this recipe - it was one of her regular lunch creations for the Meringue Girls team and I have been trying to do it justice ever since she moved back to New Zealand.

INGREDIENTS

For the salsa

• 300g cherry tomatoes, finely diced

• ½ red onion, finely diced juice of l lime

• a bunch of soft herbs: coriander, flat-leaf parsley or dill, or a mix of all three, roughly chopped

• 1 green chilli, finely diced, including the seeds if you like a kick

• a glug of extra virgin olive oil

• a good pinch of flaky sea salt and a grind of black pepper

For the French toast

• 6 eggs

• 1 small tin of sweetcorn (165g drained weight)

• 1 tsp sea salt

• ½ tsp black pepper

• ½ tsp smoked paprika

• 6 slices of thick-cut white bread (use gluten-free bread to keep this recipe GF) butter, for frying

• 50g strong Cheddar cheese, grated

• hot sauce (optional)

METHOD

1 Make the salsa first, by combining all the ingredients in a bowl and setting it to one side to marinate.

2 Crack all the eggs into a large bowl, and add the drained sweetcorn, salt, pepper and paprika. Blend the mixture with a stick blender until silky and smooth.

3 Submerge each slice of bread in the batter to coat.

4 Heat a little butter in a frying pan over a medium heat and fry each slice of bread until golden brown and crisp on both sides, adding more butter to the pan when needed.

5 Serve each slice with a little grated Cheddar, a generous helping of salsa and perhaps some hot sauce on the side.

Citrus Mackerel Spaghetti with Pangrattato

Serves 6

This recipe was born, like the best of them, out of necessity. While living with my first boyfriend in my early 20s, we existed almost exclusively off BLTs and a version of this pasta. Tinned fish and dried pasta were affordable, and this recipe became a staple dinner. It's for the cash poor and the time poor, yet it's serving big time flavour. It's made up of pantry staples and will be on the table in less than half an hour.

INGREDIENTS

• 200g stale bread

• 100ml extra virgin olive oil

• 1 clove of garlic, minced

• 500g dried spaghetti

• 4 x 125g tins of mackerel in olive oil, drained and broken up

• 1 x 180g jar of capers, drained and finely chopped

• 2 tsp chilli flakes

• zest and juice of 3 lemons

• a large bunch of flat-leaf parsley, leaves and stalks finely chopped

• sea salt and ground black pepper

METHOD

1 First make the pangrattato by blitzing the bread into breadcrumbs in a food processor.

2 In a frying pan, over a medium heat, heat a tablespoon of the olive oil and fry the breadcrumbs with the garlic until golden brown and crisp. I like to take them pretty dark, bordering on a little burned, but you do you.

3 Cook the spaghetti in well-salted, boiling water until al dente.

4 Put the mackerel, capers, chilli flakes, lemon zest and juice, most of the parsley and half the olive oil into a large mixing bowl and combine thoroughly.

5 Drain the pasta, reserving a little of the water, and add it to the mackerel mixture.

6 Mix vigorously, adding a little pasta water and more olive oil if it seems too dry. You should end up with a glossy sauce that clings to the pasta.

7 Serve on a large platter, topped with the pangrattato and the rest of the chopped parsley.

“It's dreamy with a dollop of creme fraiche on a warm summer's day”

Browned Butter, Almond, Summer Fruit Cake

Serves 8 generously

This cake is the epitome of summer: it's sticky, jammy, fresh and not too sweet. The browned butter and ground almonds give it a beautiful nuttiness and it's just dreamy with a dollop of creme fraiche on top, on a warm summer's day.

INGREDIENTS

• 250g unsalted butter

• 370g icing sugar, sifted

• 200g ground almonds

• 8og plain flour

• a pinch of sea salt

• 220g egg whites

• 3 tsp vanilla extract

• 100g berries

• 1 ripe peach, sliced into half-moons

• creme fraiche, to serve

METHOD

1 Preheat the oven to 170°C/150°C fan. Grease and line a 21cm round tin.

2 Melt the butter in a saucepan over a medium-high heat and continue to cook until it starts to brown, swirling the pan and keeping an eye on it so it doesn't turn from brown to burnt. Once the milk solids have gone a nutty brown, take the pan o the heat and leave to cool.

3 Whisk together the icing sugar, ground almonds, plain flour and salt in a large bowl.

4 Add the egg whites and vanilla and stir until combined, then add the cooled brown butter and mix again.

5 Pour the batter into the tin and put the tin into the fridge for 15 minutes until the batter has slightly firmed up.

6 Sprinkle the fruit on top, pressing the berries and slices of peach

halfway into the

7 Bake for 1 hour 15 minutes, covering loosely with foil after 50 minutes so it doesn't brown too much on top.

1 Let the cake cool completely in the tin, then serve with a light dusting of icing sugar and a dollop of creme fraiche.

Simplicity at BAR45

BAR45 at 45 Park Lane has launched Simplicity, a new cocktail concept that pairs minimalist aesthetics with unexpected flavour profiles. Simplicity invites guests to explore six curated flavour profiles - Crisp, Rich, Umami, Negroni, Rare and Zero, guided by flavour rather than detailed descriptions, with a short series of questions helping the bar team tailor the perfect serve. Each cocktail is created using advanced, often lesser known techniques such as Greek yoghurt washing, as showcased in the Bacchus Kiss, and sous pression freezing, used in Pick Me Up.

The Crisp selection features minimalist cocktails with bright, clean flavours, such as the We Paloma, a refreshing mix of Maestro Dobel Diamante tequila, kiwi, ka r lime leaf soda and Italicus. The Rich category delivers cocktails inspired by natural depth and intensity, such as the Banana President, a luxurious mix of Mount Gay XO rum, banana, cream sherry and Cocchi Extra Dry vermouth. Those drawn to more savoury notes will enjoy the Umami collection, presenting innovative combinations like the ItaloSamba, a blend of Yaguara Cachaça, tomato, strawberry, and Barolo Chinato vermouth. Honouring the timeless aperitif, the Negroni section reinvents the classic in unique ways, from the rich Coconut and Sesame Negroni, made with The Botanist gin, coconut and sesame vermouth and Campari.

here are a lot of terrible eyebrows out there. And a lot of beautiful ones. Getting it right is the di erence between looking your best and looking awful - or just strange. I have been worrying about my brows for some time – why so sparse? Are they disappearing? – and pencilling them in daily is not my best skill. But when I meet Karen Betts’ assistant, Sue, in Mayfair, I’m maybe a bit defensive, because I know exactly what I don’t want. No heavy, angular brows for me please. No brows that look like they’ve been done. I needn’t have worried. Karen is all about the natural brow – and she will in fact refuse to deliver those terrible eyebrows that I fear. Even if I wanted them. Many of her clients come to her with alopecia, or after cancer treatment, because her skill lies in creating beautiful, and – importantly – natural-looking brows. “Less is more,” she says. The process is essentially tattooing, she says – and it’s less painful than threading. First she draws on what she thinks my brows should look like, and we negotiate a bit on length and width – and then she uses her personally designed ink tool to imprint the colour on my brows. It takes about ten minutes in total and feels a bit scratchy – but chatting to Karen is so entertaining that I barely notice. Immediate results are far more intense than the final fade, and for the next few days I receive helpful texts updating me on the healing process. Each treatment requires a single top up in a few weeks, so watch this space.

Look and feel your best with the help of plastic surgeon Chris Abela

It’s commonly acknowledged that those who feel confident in themselves often thrive. Looking and feeling healthy is an important part of this. The skin is the body’s largest organ by weight and it can reflect a person's overall health and wellbeing.

Life events such as weddings can focus people’s mind on optimising themselves through surgical and nonsurgical techniques. Consultant cosmetic and reconstructive surgeon Chris Abela does not recommend rushing into any decision immediately before the big day. Preparation and planning is key to success. Anti-wrinkle treatments can be an e ective camouflage measure but a longer term treatment plan is best worked out well in advance. Surgical interventions often take 3-6 months to recover from and this period should ideally be stress free.

Chris’ core belief is to empower people to be the best version of themselves, well beyond any surgical treatment. He suggests the following steps for anyone feeling unhappy about their appearance, whether it’s excess skin, a blemish or particularly bothersome age-related change.

UNDERSTAND

YOUR PRIORITIES

Society puts pressure on people to look a certain way. Restoring one’s idea of ‘self’ after a period of change is more important. So, patients should reflect on their feelings, understand their priorities and construct a realistic set of questions for the surgeon to ensure they are looking at surgery for the right reasons.

RECOGNISE YOU HAVE THE POWER TO MAKE A CHANGE

Seeking change is understandable and can be a form of self-care. There are many di erent surgical and non surgical options available so it’s important to spend time researching these to see what approach feels most appropriate. If the information is too confusing, choose a surgeon who will explain the options holistically and thoroughly.

INFORMED DECISION MAKING

Take advantage of consultations, look at reviews and ask for recommendations. Ask questions and ensure the answers have met your needs. At the end of this process, choosing a surgeon who shares your vision and who you completely trust is crucial.

C hris’ ethos and the team’s overarching philosophies

•A safe and evidence-based appoach to the medicine and surgery provided.

•Holistic and honest consultations to enable patients with a better quality of life, long a er they have been discharged.

•Providing the right infrastructure and personnel to take care of a patient and fully support them for the duration of their journey.

All this is done with discretion in mind.

1

FAIRYTALE BRIDE

Alicia Rueda

Bilbao designer Alicia Rueda showed a fabulous collection at Barcelona Bridal Fashion Week with plenty of her hallmark bows and trims, but this gown stood out for fairytale glamour. With full floaty sleeves and ru ed shoulder detail, tapering to a curved bodice studded with flowers and crystals, it has a flowing A-line skirt – all the elements you need to float down the aisle in style. aliciarueda.com

2

CLEAN CUT

Caroline Castigliano

London's Caroline Castigliano was a welcome addition to the Barcelona runaway, showing o a collection showcasing her design signature of modern twists on classic wedding attire. While her ballgowns are peerless, this slinky two-piece caught our eye. The fluid and flattering slimline skirt with small train is paired to a longline top with collar and open back – creating an elegant reveal in a pared-back ensemble. carolinecastigliano.com

3

SLICK SHIFT

Sophie et Voilà

In a collection o ering many superb modern takes on bridal, BBFW stalwart Sophie et Voilà delivered this standout shift dress. The shoulder-enhancing v-cut neckline and neat halter ties create a clean line, with the lightweight gown ending above the knee. A gauzy top layer, cut slightly longer, adds a wedding-day flourish to a design that's perfect for destination and high-summer celebrations. sophieetvoila.com

4

NEW ROMANTIC Yolancris

There's a post-punk feel to this deliciously decadent ensemble by Yolancris. The ballgown with longline bodice has a circular skirt trimmed with oversized flower heads. The boxy jacket is trimmed with yet more blooms and crystals. Designed to be removed for the after party (if you can bear), this glittering jacket will earn its keep at parties for years to come. yolancris.com

5 BLOOM TIME

Pronovias

While floral embellishments are appearing in lots of collections right now, we love Pronovias' take. The cut is traditional, with high neck, slim sleeves and fitted bodice tapering to a full A-line skirt with train – shorter at the front to reveal wedding heels. But the floral fabric with silvery weave and blush underlayer ramps up the glamour –transforming a demure choice into a showstopper. pronovias.com

HIGH STYLE

Isabel Sanchis

High necks are having something of a revival, as are separates, and Isabel Sanchis shows o the virtues of both with an elegant outfit featuring exceptional fabrics. The fine lace blouse with high neck, full sleeves and neat cu s has an Edwardian air and is paired to a plain floor length skirt with relaxed pockets. A long silk ribbon waistband adds a romantic flourish. isabelsanchis.com

RIGHT SUIT THE

Why creating a bespoke wedding suit with a tailor is a process you'll never forget

Creating a bespoke wedding suit is one of the most personal and enjoyable journeys you’ll ever embark on—and it should feel just as special and unforgettable as the day itself. For many grooms, this is the one major style investment they’ll make in their lives. For others, it may be one of many tailored experiences. Either way, your wedding suit should feel like more than just clothing. It should feel like a celebration of you—your style, your story, and the moment you’re stepping into. From the moment you walk through the tailor’s door, it’s all about you. Not just your measurements (though of course we’ll get those spot-on), but your personality,

your vision, and how you want to feel as you walk down the aisle. It’s not just about looking good—it’s about feeling incredible. Every stitch, every fabric choice, every button is chosen with intention to represent you in your best light. The process begins with an in-depth, relaxed consultation. Think of it as a conversation, not a transaction. We want to get to know you—what makes you tick, what your day will look like, and what kind of atmosphere you’re trying to create. Are you having a black-tie evening in a grand ballroom, a rustic outdoor ceremony, or something more o beat and personal? All of these details help us craft a look that not only fits the setting but also reflects your unique personality and relationship. This is also where we explore your preferences and style inspirations. Maybe

you've always loved the sleek silhouette of a classic tuxedo, or perhaps you lean toward something more relaxed and contemporary with softer lines and unconventional details. Whatever your style, we’re here to guide you with honest, expert advice—ensuring the final look is polished, personal, and unmistakably you (just a bit hotter). Then comes one of the most exciting parts of the journey, choosing your fabric. This

“Your suit should move with you e ortlessly, feel natural, and reflect your confidence”

is where your suit really starts to take shape. You’ll get to touch and feel a curated selection of some of the finest fabrics in the world—luxurious wools, cashmeres, silks, linens, and blends that breathe life into your suit. We’ll help you choose a fabric weight and texture that suits the season and complements your skin tone and the colour palette of your wedding. It’s a tactile, sensory experience, and it sets the tone for the craftsmanship to come. Once the fabric is chosen, the real magic begins. Your suit is designed and crafted from the ground up using a completely unique pattern tailored to your exact measurements. It’s not just about fit—it’s about movement, posture, and comfort. Your suit should move with you e ortlessly, feel natural, and reflect your confidence. Throughout the process, you'll come in for multiple fittings. These appointments are where every detail is fine-tuned, from the shoulder line to the taper of the trousers, the pitch of the sleeves to the break of the pants. We’ll also help you consider details like lapel style, pocket configuration, linings, monograms, and even hidden personal touches that only you know are there. It’s this level of personalisation that turns a great suit into something unforgettable.

And here’s the thing—it’s not just about checking a box on the to-do list. It’s about creating a moment. That feeling when you first try on your suit and look in the mirror thinking, “Yes. This is it.” That feeling of quiet confidence, of knowing you look exactly how you hoped you would on one of the biggest days of your life. By the end of your journey, you're not just picking up a suit—you’re stepping into a new chapter. You leave not just dressed for your wedding, but prepared to make memories, photos, and promises that will last a lifetime. The right suit can elevate your entire day—it becomes part of the story. And perhaps the best part? Your bespoke suit doesn’t get packed away and forgotten after the wedding. It becomes a timeless piece you can return to again and again, worn for anniversaries, celebrations, or even just when you want to feel like your best self. It’s more than a suit. It’s a reminder of who you were in that moment—and who you’re becoming.

Your Love Story Deserves an Island Like This.

There's a special magic when two souls unite, especially at Long Bay Beach Resort, the enchanting destination for island weddings in the British Virgin Islands, where the ocean meets the shore.

Groom

Brides — you’ve got the dress, the flowers, and your aunt’s special seating request handled. Now let’s talk about him. Your groom. The man of the hour. Sure, he might have nailed the proposal, but is he still getting his haircut at whichever place has availability on the day? We need to step in. Because here’s the thing: wedding hair is a big deal. Not just for you. For him. Those photos? They’re forever. That first look moment? He’s in it too. So let’s get him looking sharp, fresh, and e ortlessly cool — not like he just wandered out of a £10 walk-in with a schoolboy fade.

Enter Laban London Barbers on Northcote Road SW11 and on Bellevue Road SW17 — two South West London staples with serious grooming clout. Founded by Anthony Laban (who’s been in the game longer than your fiancé’s known how to use hair product), these barbershops are known for turning “I just need a trim” into “I’ve never looked better.” Think precision cuts, expert styling advice, proper product recommendations, and the kind of laid-back, luxe vibe that makes even the most haircut-averse groom feel like a rockstar.

Get the ultimate style at Laban London

THE COUNTDOWN

12 WEEKS TO GO THE CONSULTATION CUT

This isn’t just a tidy-up. It’s the moment to figure out the look. Whether he’s growing it out a little, wants a sharper finish, or needs to fix the damage from his last panic-cut, now’s the time. The Laban team will assess what he’s working with and map out a game plan that’ll have him aisle-ready without that box-fresh, just-cut vibe. It’s relaxed, it’s stylish, and it’s a great excuse to start using decent shampoo.

8 WEEKS TO GO THE SHAPE-UP

Now that the growth has begun, it’s time for a refining cut. This is where the barbers work their magic — shaping the hairstyle, guiding how to style it day-to-day, and getting the beard (if there is one) into solid pre-wedding territory. Trust the process.

4 WEEKS TO GO THE POLISH

The final pre-wedding cut. This one is all about clean lines, soft edges, and cameraready detail. The barbers will make sure

it’s styled to perfection, and if you’re feeling extra, throw in a hot towel shave or a skin-refreshing treatment. It’s pampering, yes — but it’s also precision.

2–3 DAYS TO GO

THE FINAL TIDY FRINGE TRIM?

NECKLINE TIDY?

BEARD PERFECTION?

This is the last touch-up to keep everything crisp without looking freshly chopped. It’s subtle, sleek, and makes a world of di erence on the big day. So brides — add “book his haircut” to your to-do list, or better yet, get the best man on the case. Between Laban London and Anthony Laban Barbershop, you’ve got the groom (and the groomsmen) covered. Because great hair doesn’t happen by accident — and neither does that perfectly styled “just turned around at the altar” look you’ve been dreaming of. Let’s make sure he looks as good as you do. Almost. 020 7228 5522

Getting married in town? Here are our two favourite London venues

TRINITY HOUSE

Height, light and space are key features of the Georgian gem that is Trinity House on Tower Hill. Exceptional views of the historic Tower of London provide the ‘wow’ factor to family and guests, especially overseas visitors and outof-towners. The venue is a veritable treasure trove of maritime art and artefacts, including the original bell of the Royal Yacht Britannia. Located a stone’s throw from the Tower Hill underground, arrival (by horse-drawn carriage?) on cobbled stones behind a set of iron railings is through the grand reception hall and distinctive dual staircase up to a suite of five rooms. High ceilings with a stunning trompe l’oeil painting distinguishes the Court Room, an ideal option for a post-ceremony reception

for up to 130 or a seated ceremony for up to 80. The Library is the main room and comprises opulent crystal chandeliers and fascinating stained-glass panels. This room allows for civil ceremonies of up to 130 seated (180 standing) and two smaller adjoining rooms provide added flexibility, including a separate one for dancing. Film and photo opportunities abound both in and outside the venue, as has been discovered by numerous location film units as well as bridal parties, with Trinity House featured in productions including ‘MasterChef’, ‘Lara Croft: Tomb Raider’ and ‘The Professionals’. Hire is always on an exclusive-use basis and there is wheelchair access. trinityhouse.co.uk venue.enquiries@trinityhouse.co.uk

NONNA’S

KITCHEN

Have we reached peak kitchen? It’s time to celebrate the timeless appeal of the traditional Italian cucina

I

s it time for a backlash against the modern kitchen? Not everybody wants an island. Or an invisible induction hob, or a wine cooler, or several di erent ovens, or a boiling water tap.

The quest for kitchen perfection has led us so far from our grandparents’ kitchens that a new sense of nostalgia is growing. So here’s a tribute to the traditional Italian kitchen, a place of warmth, functionality, and timeless elegance. Rooted in history and culture, these kitchens are more than just places for preparing food—they are the heart of the home, embodying the Italian way of life. From their rustic charm to their carefully selected materials, traditional Italian kitchens create a welcoming and harmonious atmosphere that has captivated homeowners and designers worldwide, with not a vacuum drawer in sight.

One of the most significant aspects of a traditional

Italian kitchen is its ability to bring people together. Italian culture places a strong emphasis on family, socialization, and shared meals, and the kitchen is often the space where these values come to life. With an open, inviting layout, these kitchens encourage conversation, interaction, and a communal approach to cooking and dining. Large wooden tables serve as focal points, providing ample space for friends and family to gather for meals, discussions, or even casual food preparation.

A key characteristic of traditional Italian kitchens is their use of natural materials. High-quality wood, stone, and wrought iron are commonly used to create an aesthetic that is both rustic and elegant. Cabinetry is often crafted from oak, walnut, or chestnut, with hand-carved details that add to the kitchen’s authenticity and charm. Stone countertops, such as marble or granite, o er durability while enhancing

“Not everybody wants an island and an invisible induction hob”
“Handmade ceramic tiles, painted with intricate patterns, are a distinctive feature”

the kitchen’s overall aesthetic appeal. Terracotta or ceramic tiles are frequently used for flooring and backsplashes, adding texture and warmth.

The craftsmanship in these kitchens reflects a deep appreciation for artistry and tradition. Every piece, from the cabinets to the furniture, is designed with careful attention to detail, resulting in a kitchen that is both functional and beautiful. Handmade ceramic tiles, painted with intricate patterns, are a distinctive feature, lending an artisanal touch that showcases Italy’s rich heritage of craftsmanship.

Traditional Italian kitchens often feature a warm, earthy color palette that evokes the sun-drenched landscapes of the Italian countryside. Shades of terracotta, ochre, deep reds, and warm browns dominate the space, creating an inviting and cozy atmosphere. These colors are complemented by accents of green, blue, and yellow, inspired by the natural beauty of Italy’s rolling hills, vineyards, and coastline. This carefully chosen palette not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the kitchen but

also fosters a sense of comfort and nostalgia.

Italian kitchens prioritize functionality without compromising on beauty. Open shelving is a common design feature, allowing easy access to frequently used ingredients, utensils, and cookware. Large farmhouse-style sinks provide ample space for washing fresh produce and preparing meals, while sturdy wooden countertops and spacious work surfaces make cooking a seamless experience.

Another notable feature is the integration of traditional cooking appliances, such as woodfired ovens or antique-style stoves, which add authenticity while enhancing the cooking experience. These elements make traditional Italian kitchens a perfect blend of form and function, catering to the needs of both passionate home cooks and professional chefs alike.

Vintage and antique elements play a crucial role in defining the character of a traditional Italian kitchen. Many homeowners incorporate antique furniture, such as weathered cabinets, rustic wooden benches, or wrought iron chandeliers, to enhance the old-world charm of the space.

Vintage copper pots and pans, decorative ceramics, and hand-painted dishware further contribute to the kitchen’s authentic aesthetic.

Reclaimed wood and aged finishes are also popular choices for achieving a livedin, well-loved look. These elements not only add a sense of history and tradition but also contribute to the sustainability of the design by repurposing materials with rich character.

The appeal of traditional Italian kitchens lies in their ability to combine warmth, craftsmanship, functionality, and a deep appreciation for heritage. They are not just spaces for cooking but also places of gathering, storytelling, and tradition. With their inviting atmosphere, high-quality materials, and timeless designs, these kitchens continue to inspire homeowners around the world who seek a perfect balance between elegance and comfort. Whether in an Italian countryside villa or a modern home, the enduring charm of a traditional Italian kitchen remains a testament to the beauty of classic design.

A LICK OF PAINT

How model and DJ Mary Charteris transformed her home with colour

Mary is the epitome of cool. As a model and DJ, she has lots of first-hand experience putting together di erent colours, patterns and styles when it comes to clothes, but was struggling to work out how to translate this into her home.

While she had a clear vision of the overall vibe and feel she wanted to create – and had already made a strong start on the overall design of the space – as a first-time home renovator, she lacked decorating confidence and couldn’t quite see how to bring together all the bright colours she loves without it feeling chaotic. She had keenly observed how colours can a ect your mood, and loves how dressing in vibrant colours makes her feel, so it was key that we approached her home colour choices with this ethos in mind.

Although we chose a lot of strong colours, tonally they all sit together perfectly, which always creates harmony however bright you go. Where we’ve used neutrals, these all sit sympathetically with the bolder colours, for a look that’s considered and strong but not overwhelming. We made a conscious decision to create a relatively

light and airy feel downstairs, using White 02 across both the walls, ceiling and skirting boards (its balanced grey undertones really complement the exposed brick and oak flooring), then treated her kitchen units – which sit in the middle of the space – almost like a jewellery box, with punchy, contrasting tones of royal blue and putty pink.

Mary really liked the idea of using red for her main guest bedroom. While a strong red would likely feel too overwhelming in a sleeping space, we settled on Red 03, which is actually quite grounding due to its warm brown and pink undertones. This looked stunning colour-drenched across her

built-in wardrobes and over the ceiling, and created a real cocooning e ect. Bringing in tiny touches of black – in the cupboard handles, light fittings and bedframe – gave it that slight edge that she wanted. In Mary and Robbie’s bedroom suite, she really wanted to go to town and, as a more private area than the main living spaces, this made perfect sense. She made some really brave colour choices, and it totally paid o . While the bedroom itself is tranquil and tonal, with walls and skirting both painted in pale Blue 01, a harmonious Teal 01 on the fitted wardrobes, and repeating the White 02 used downstairs on the ceiling, her floorboards have been finished in a bold purple shade.

THE PROPERTY

A Victorian townhouse spread over four floors. The ground floor has been extended at the back to create a large, light-filled kitchen/ dining/family space, allowing the original living room to function as an intimate snug. On the second floor is the primary guest room and main bathroom. The third floor is taken over by the couple’s bedroom suite (incorporating their bedroom, dressing area and en suite). The top floor houses Wilde’s bedroom and a second guest bedroom.

PREFERRED COLOURS AND STYLES

Vibrant jewel tones with a bit of rock chick. Mary’s palette is bold and energising, but laidback when it needs to be.

@marycharteris

This shakes things up, but it works SO well as purple sits next to blue on the colour wheel, meaning the two share tonal similarities. Keeping this bold colour pop on the floor allows the rest of the room to retain its tranquil feel. This all hints at what’s to come in the dressing room, which leads directly o the sleeping space and is where Mary’s inner rock chick really comes out: the tendency with dark, windowless spaces is to paint them white, but here she’s played on the darkness by totally colour drenching the space in a heavily saturated green with a high gloss finish, which looks amazing against the leopardprint carpet. This leads through to their

“Although we chose a lot of strong colours, tonally they all sit together perfectly”

bold en-suite bathroom, painted in a vibrant warm blue, with a gently curved vintage mirror adding softness and character to this small space. Mary says: ‘I love how the dark blue kitchen units seem to come alive when the morning sun hits them – choosing an eggshell finish really helps with this, as it bounces even more light around. While my house certainly has a lot of colours in it, I don’t find it overwhelming at all. Guests love coming here and say it has a real party vibe, yet it also feels relaxing.’

BRINGING THE OUTSIDE IN

Discover the elegance of Crittall steel windows and doors

Of all London addresses, those in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea have a distinct beauty all their own. Look closely and it’s there in the details; the proportions, the finishes, the subtle blend of heritage and modernity. For many householders in this part of the capital, the way a home feels is just as important as how it looks. Increasingly, that means finding ways to open up interiors and let the outside in. This is more than a passing trend. It’s about creating light-filled, inviting spaces that flow easily between house and garden. It’s about enjoying morning light over co ee, doors open to a private courtyard, or watching the evening fade from the comfort of a warm, glazed kitchen-diner. These are the quiet luxuries of connected living, and they’re made

possible with well-considered architectural choices. One of the most transformative? Steel-framed windows and doors.

Crittall Windows has been designing and manufacturing steel fenestration for more than 170 years. This famous name has become synonymous with refined architectural glazing and today they’re helping homeowners reimagine how their homes connect to the outside world.

LIGHT, OPENNESS AND UNINTERRUPTED VIEWS

One of the most compelling features of steelframed doors and windows is their ability to let in light, and plenty of it. Crittall’s designs feature impressively slim profiles, which means more glass and less frame. This not only enhances the sense of space within your home but also allows uninterrupted views of gardens, courtyards and terraces.

For homes where natural light may be limited, such as lower ground floors or rooms with deep footprints, this can be

“Slim profiles allow uninterrupted views of gardens, courtyards and terraces ”

transformative. Large-format steel doors flood interiors with daylight, adding warmth and softness to even the most architectural of spaces. Whether opening onto a landscaped garden or a quiet urban balcony, these frames create a handsome visual and physical transition between inside and out.

STRENGTH, STYLE AND STAYING POWER

Steel o ers exceptional strength, which means it can support much larger panes of glass within far slimmer frames. The e ect is refined, elegant and timeless, and this strength also translates into lasting performance. Crittall steel doors and windows are built to endure. They resist warping, perform brilliantly in all weather conditions and require minimal maintenance over their lifespan.

TAILORED TO YOUR HOME, SHAPED BY HERITAGE

No two homes are the same, and the Crittall approach reflects that. Every installation is made to order, designed to suit the unique proportions, style and context of your property.

Crittall doors and windows are available in a wide choice of colours beyond the iconic black. From soft greys to bold metallics, each finish is carefully selected to complement the surrounding materials and interior palette. The result is a cohesive, considered design that enhances your home rather than competing with it.

Whether you’re planning a full renovation or looking to add a sense of light and flow to a single room, Crittall steel windows and doors make a joy of everyday living. crittall-windows.co.uk

GARDEN FURNITURE

TRENDS

A look at style, function, and sustainabilityfor this year’s gardens

SUSTAINABILITY AND ECO-CONSCIOUS CHOICES

With a rising awareness of environmental issues, many Londoners are choosing furniture made from ecofriendly materials such as recycled wood, bamboo, and sustainable metals. Companies are also moving towards materials that are durable and weather-resistant, ensuring that their products have longevity, reducing the need for constant replacements.

Timber furniture, often reclaimed or responsibly sourced, has become a statement of not only style but also a commitment to ethical consumption. Similarly, woven outdoor seating crafted from recycled plastics and eco-friendly textiles is gaining popularity, providing both comfort and a reduced environmental footprint. Many people are opting for upcycled designs that tell a story of regeneration rather than waste.

The concept of sustainability also extends to the circular economy. Many garden furniture brands are taking steps to create products that are repairable and recyclable. As the capital becomes more eco-conscious, London’s garden spaces reflect a sense of environmental responsibility, where beauty and sustainability go hand in hand.

BOLD AND ECLECTIC DESIGNS

While minimalist Scandinavian-inspired garden furniture has had its moment, 2025 is seeing a resurgence of bold, eclectic designs that mix vibrant colours, textures, and patterns. Playful, statement pieces include brightly coloured furniture sets, neon cushions and geometric shapes, transforming gardens into dynamic extensions of the interior.

Garden furniture has become an extension of home décor, and lots of high-end pieces blur the lines between the two. Think plush outdoor sofas adorned with velvet cushions or wicker lounges paired with rich, deep tones of green and gold. Londoners are rethinking the boundaries of outdoor space, turning gardens into a continuation of their personal style and aesthetic preferences.

Another facet of this boldness is the use of multifunctional furniture that encourages a more fluid use of space. Multi-tiered planters, modular seating arrangements, and foldable tables that can shift between casual and formal settings allow for flexible outdoor living.

SMART AND TECHNOLOGICAL INNOVATIONS

Gardens are becoming increasingly high-tech. Whether

THE ROOST

it’s through built-in solar panels, Bluetooth speakers, or self-watering planters, the integration of technology in garden furniture is an undeniable trend. Smart garden lighting is one of the most popular tech-forward additions, with outdoor lights that can be controlled via smartphone apps or voice assistants. Additionally, many outdoor heating solutions, such as sleek firepits or eco-friendly outdoor heaters, are designed with built-in smart thermostats for maximum comfort.

THE RISE OF MULTI-PURPOSE FURNITURE

Benches that double as storage, co ee tables with built-in fire pits, and foldable chairs that can be tucked away when not in use are all gaining traction. These functional pieces allow residents to maximise their outdoor spaces while still maintaining an air of elegance. London’s love for practicality and multifunctionality in design has bled into its gardens, ensuring that each piece of furniture has a clear purpose.

NATURAL MATERIALS AND TEXTURES

Rattan, teak, and stone have become ubiquitous in outdoor spaces, evoking a rustic, earthy vibe that feels at one with nature. The trend towards natural materials isn’t just about aesthetics – it’s about fostering a connection with the environment, allowing the furniture to age gracefully and blend into the garden landscape.

OUTDOOR DINING: A LIFESTYLE CHOICE

Demand for stylish yet functional dining sets is growing. Dining tables with extendable leaves, comfortable armchairs, and built-in seating arrangements make outdoor dining an experience in itself. With the unpredictable British weather, these dining sets are designed with durability and practicality in mind, often featuring weather-resistant cushions, rust-proof frames, and weather-tight finishes.

Why yellow is the interiors colour of the moment

Soft, warm, uplifting. A colour that’s been on everyone’s fashion radar for the past year, butter yellow has now permeated into interiors.

More than a transient trend, this playful yet sophisticated shade is fast becoming a staple for living spaces, bathrooms and kitchens. But what is it about this understated pastel that suggests it’s here to stay?

Yellow is often considered a cheerful and energising color, but it can also be surprisingly calming in interiors when used thoughtfully. The key to its calming e ect lies in the warmth and soft tones of yellow, which evoke feelings of happiness and optimism without overwhelming the senses. Soft shades like pale butter or mustard can create a serene atmosphere, especially when combined with natural light. These lighter hues have a gentle vibrancy that can brighten a space without being too intense, making them ideal for relaxation areas such as living rooms or bedrooms.

Yellow is also closely associated with nature, often reminding us of sunshine, golden fields, and blooming flowers, which can have a grounding and peaceful e ect. When incorporated into interiors, yellow can enhance the sense of warmth and comfort, fostering a welcoming and harmonious environment.

Furthermore, yellow has been shown to stimulate mental clarity and creativity, which contributes to an overall sense of well-being. When balanced with neutral tones or paired with calming accents like light greens or blues, yellow helps create a balanced, tranquil space that feels both inviting and peaceful. Therefore, when used in moderation and in the right tones, yellow can be a wonderfully calming color for interior design.

Louise Ashdown, Head of Design at West One Bathrooms, explains: “Butter yellow is a fresh alternative to classic white, and has translated perfectly into bathrooms, wet rooms and shower rooms. A less daunting choice than dark or bold colour for sanitaryware, glossy ceramic designs in this softer sunny tone reflect the light and introduce a sense of warmth into a space. It can be a real mood booster when you get up in the morning.

“For us, a pared-back mango shade has given the butter yellow trend a really grown-up feel. Paired with everything from crisp white to strong reds, blues and greens, it’s surprisingly versatile and works in rooms of all styles, from retro spaces to cool contemporary homes. While it’s big in 2025, we can see this colour standing the test of time – after all, it’s hard to tire of a colour that’s both uplifting and understated.”

Grazzie Wilson, Head of Creative at Ca’Pietra, continues: “We can’t get enough of the butter yellow trend in tiling. The best thing is that it doesn’t restrict the rest of the room in terms of style inspiration. Take hexagonal stripe tiles – a crisp mix of yellow and white, they are stunning for a shower or splashback. Laid to create a vertical, horizontal or diagonal design – or even a bold chevron – the soft butter yellow colour takes on a vintage vibe or ultra-modern look, you can really personalise it to your room.

“In a completely di erent vein, our rustic lemon grove inspired collection, Nonna’s Kitchen Sorrento, uses yellow to bring the warmth of Italian sunshine into the darkest of rooms. Such a celebratory colour, it’s hard to feel anything but optimistic. Who wouldn’t want to be transported to sunnier shores, all year round?

And our simple square glazed tile in a soft buttery shade works in a classic chequerboard pattern – period homes or anyone channelling the cottage-core look will love the subtle warmth and timeless style this look introduces. ”

Keeley Sutcli e, Design Manager at BC

Designs, adds: “Choosing the colour for a freestanding bath can be really tricky – it’s an investment piece so naturally, you’ll want to get the balance between longevity and statement style. I’m a big believer that butter yellow ticks both boxes. As an accent colour, its milky tones are subtle yet wonderfully warm – and it can blend into a room with a period, modern or retro style. Keeley concludes: “Whether it’s for a space bathed in natural light or a north facing room, a yellow bath introduces just the right amount of colour – you could say it’s a new neutral. Team with crisp white, pops of brighter shades or tone it down with wood finishes, it’s fabulously versatile. We’re seeing it paired with sleek chrome fittings – a finish that’s having its own renaissance – to reflect the buttery yellow colour back into the room.”

BEACH DREAM

The most beautiful beach and a gloriously relaxed vibe make Turks and Caicos irresistible – especially as guests of Wymara

Turks and Caicos Islands delivers a Caribbean experience without the crowds. This ribbon of 40 islands and cays, eight of them inhabited, sit south of the Bahamas in the Lucayan Archipelago – so geographically within Atlantic not Caribbean waters. While low key for tourism, Turks and Caicos punches above its weight for plaudits – notably, topping multiple lists for world's best beach at Grace Bay. We are guests of Wymara Resort + Villas on Providenciales (locals call it Provo) giving us direct access to this celebrated beach. Like Turks and Caicos, Wymara is a heavy hitter for awards. You'll fi nd it on all the best lists, including Forbes, Tripadvisor and Conde Nast Traveler. Guests rave about serenity and superlative service in a picture-perfect romantic location. We're lucky guests indeed, experiencing both its luxurious villas and the boutique resort, a few minutes' drive away.

Even arriving at Providenciales Airport feels like stepping down a gear. We've been advised not to bother with a taxi because everyone takes the minibus – and so we join returning islanders and visitors, a convivial crew happy to be paradise side. Everyone knows Wymara Resort, but the Wymara Villas Harbour Club is newer and there's some debate among our fellow travellers as to where precisely it's located. Thankfully, our driver knows the way – we're dropped o with happy holiday wishes within minutes.

As arrivals go, this couldn't be easier, and so it continues. After the swiftest check-in, we're whisked up the hill by golf cart to our one-bedroom pool villa by our personal concierge. Our sun-drenched space is dazzling, ultra-modern and sleek with total privacy. Doors open to our outside deck – ultimate serenity spot with dining area, private plunge pool, shady loungers and views of glittering blue ocean just down the hill. Inside, the villa is a design marvel with a huge ocean-facing bed, cosy sofa plus a kitchenette so well imagined that we could

cook up a feast, should we so desire. The bathroom gives more superb views of the blue ocean below from its walk-in shower.

Refreshed after a quick dip in our private pool, we head out to a reception and dinner at one of the six-bed villas recently added by Wymara. While our space feels roomy, this is positively palatial – huge pool, incredible entertaining spaces and direct access down to the ocean via private steps. We are treated to a lavish feast created by the inhouse chef team before retiring replete.

Next morning, breakfast gets delivered discreetly to our hilltop deck and then we head down to the chic Beach Club, where energetic souls swim laps, play tennis or try pickleball. We're tempted by the fantastic in-ocean pool. Accessed down wide steps from the jetty, it's a vast and deep seawater marvel hewn from rock. You can swim lazy laps to your heart's content and then recharge at the Tiki Bar, where food and drinks are served all day. Sundowners here provide the best sunset views.

One evening, before heading out, we have a sound bath therapy on our deck. It

is an out-of-body experience that leaves us simultaneously relaxed and recharged. This, like all the spa treatments, comes to your villa if you don't want to go to the spa. Sustainability and healing are key tenets, with treatments from beauty-insider favourite 111SKIN from London and islanddeveloped Wildflower Skincare Lab. With the latter, flowers used in products are grown right here on resort.

Sustainability is a top concern resortwide – and with Green Globe Certification to prove it. There are generous ongoing Wymara contributions supporting initiatives to maintain what makes Turks and Caicos unique – including its spectacular reef system, third largest in the world. No visitor to this pristine environment would ever argue with that.

After a couple of days in idyllic villa seclusion, where we don't need to lift a finger or go anywhere (we're reliably informed that's precisely what a fair few guests come here to do), we move Resort side to an Oceanfront Suite. This is another brilliantly designed space, with

vast living room and kitchen and separate bedroom with double-height doors you can close (useful for hosting guests). There's a glamorous in-bedroom bathtub for leisurely soaks, with wonderful bathroom adjoining. But the biggest luxury is the uninterrupted ocean vista from our terrace.

Amazing Grace Bay Beach – there is no better description. It is vast, curved and wide, and stretching into what seems like infinity in both directions. It has the softest sand we have ever walked on and is blissfully uncrowded. There are swimmers and loungers dotted about and couples walking the shore – it's a dreamy stroll along this beautiful bay with its vivid blue waters.

Life at Wymara Resort happens on or around the beach, unsurprisingly. Pink Bar o ers the best cocktails and a great bar menu fresh from the laidback Blue Water Bistro right next door, while the cosy loungers and fire pit beyond – plus regular beach barbecues – tempt guests to linger barefoot in the sand long after the sun sets.

For even finer dining, Indigo is top-rated across the island and far beyond, with

POOL WITH CABANAS AT WYMARA RESORT

multiple culinary awards. Menus o er delicious fish and seafood specialities, always with emphasis on provenance and sustainability (Australian executive chef Andrew Mirosch is also an avid fisherman). There's a brilliant range of vegan and wellness options, too, and simply everything – from shrimp and local mahi-mahi to the fabulous array of steaks – is on point for taste and presentation. The dessert menu deserves special mention for house-made ice creams and sorbets, chocolate lava cake and deconstructed bano ee pie – divine indulgences one and all.

In fact, divine indulgence is the best way to describe Wymara. Whether you are resort or villa side or (like us) experience the pleasures of both, this is an enchanted retreat on the most beautiful island. It delivers perfect down time – quietly luxurious, supremely relaxed, and with the softest sand and bluest ocean. And yes, amazing Grace Bay deserves that crown for world's best beach.

MAGICAL ISLAND

Wraparound sea vistas and a heady blend of Italian and Greek cuisine make Crete's dazzling White Palace a feast for the senses

“A slice of heaven bathed in shimmering blues and brilliantly cooling whites”

Greece has provided a guiding light of inspiration across the centuries.

The country’s strikingly diverse landscapes have captivated many seeking to capture its timeless beauty. And its vibrant cultural legacy rooted in classical sculpture, architecture and mythology has influenced painters, sculptors and writers alike.

This is particularly evident on the island of Crete with its rich Minoan imagery, vibrant frescos and intricate ceramics, all of which inspired, among others, Pablo Picasso. The island abounds

with treasures (natural and historical) that we can’t wait to discover.

And we’re treating ourselves to an allinclusive break at the Grecotel LUXME White Palace on the island’s stunning north-east coast. Our hotel is aptly named. It’s dazzling and palatial with a large open-air reception area overlooking layers of vivid blue. From the sparkle of the pool to the sapphire sea and sky, there are vistas in azure shades as far as we can see. The resort is cleverly designed so everything is sea-facing and we can’t get enough of those views.

This vision continues as we walk into our swim-up bungalow. It’s as good as it sounds – sparkling white and cool and the terrace (complete with plush double sun lounger)

has steps leading straight into the bluest of pools. Our very own bit of luxurious Grecian blue and white in all its glory. We soon slip into our chilled Cretan rhythm. Days begin inevitably with a refreshing dip and some energising lengths (it’s only a few steps from the bed after all), before we reward our e orts with a sumptuous breakfast. The choice and quality is remarkable (and it’s just breakfast). It quickly becomes clear we will need to focus on some serious feasting. Seven dining venues serve a range of cuisines and styles. From Greek to Italian, superb seafood, fine dining, a la carte, bu et-style and traditional Cretan. There’s also both a patisserie-chocolaterie and creperie-gelataria on site ensuring sweet treats are always at hand.

Agreco Farm (part of the hotel) is just up the road. Here they make their own delectable olive oil, olives and wine and we sample a farm-to-table extravaganza of traditional Cretan dishes. We love the tasting menu with wine pairing at White, a delicious journey through Greece’s culinary legacy at Tavernacki and lobster-based delights at Lobsteria. We also enjoy a curated wine-tasting experience of local wines with light bites to match. Perfection. Wine is an intrinsic part of the White Palace experience. There’s an elegant and well-stocked wine library where you can taste over 150 wines. The charming sommelier is always on hand to advise. And it’s all included in the upfront price. We love learning more about Greek wine and discovering what great options are available. We keep going back for more.

When we’re not eating or pondering our next meal (both highly pleasurable

“No wonder the island has served as a wellspring of inspiration for centuries”

pastimes), we laze by the pool or on the beach, plunging into the balmy waters for a revitalising cool down. We indulge in blissful massages in the serenity of the spa and take sunset walks on the beach. It’s a slice of heaven bathed in shimmering blues and brilliantly cooling whites. We never want to leave.

On the days when we can manage to tear ourselves away from our dazzling palace, there’s plenty to explore nearby and many fascinating legends to absorb. We visit the sacred monastery of Arkadi and historical Melidoni Cave to hear their incredibly tragic tales, before winding our way up to the quaint little village of Margarites. It’s famous for its many pottery studios, picturesque streets and beautiful views, the perfect place for some relaxed souvenir shopping. We also visit the Ancient Eleutherna Museum, packed with relics discovered in over 30 years of excavations in the ancient city of Eleutherna. The best way to bring Crete’s long and fascinating history to life. There is undoubtedly much to inspire, delight, and understand. Our stay, as well as being a superlative luxury escape, has given us deeper insight into the essence of Cretan heritage. It’s no wonder the island has served as a wellspring of inspiration for centuries. grecotel.com/luxme-whitepalace

SECRET IS OUT

The Algarve’s Secret Season: luxury and laidback indulgence at Four Seasons Fairways

There’s something quietly magical about the Algarve in the o -season. When the golden summer crowds begin to thin and the pace softens, a di erent side of Portugal’s southern coast reveals itself. It’s a time of year locals quietly cherish, and seasoned travellers seek out the so-called Secret Season, when the days are still bathed in sunlight, the beaches are beautifully empty, and the rhythm of life slows to something altogether more indulgent. For those in the know, there is no better base from which to enjoy this more serene side of the Algarve than Four Seasons Fairways, a luxurious retreat nestled in the heart of Quinta do Lago.

O -season travel in the Algarve is an insider’s secret. The summer heat mellows to a gentle warmth, perfect for al fresco lunches, early evening strolls, and long, peaceful days spent outdoors. It’s also a time when the luxury of space and stillness becomes part of the appeal. You can wander along empty stretches of beach, book a table at even the most in-demand restaurants with ease, or tee o at Quinta do Lago’s worldclass golf courses without a wait in sight.

Four Seasons Fairways makes the most of this season of calm. The resort’s unique blend of villa-style accommodation with the convenience and service of a boutique hotel o ers guests the best of both worlds. Each villa or apartment is impeccably designed, spacious and private, complete with either a private pool or Jacuzzi, outdoor dining area and fully equipped kitchen.

Despite the space and privacy, you’re never far from luxurious touches and thoughtful service. The resort’s wellness centre is a peaceful haven for rest and rejuvenation, with an indoor heated pool, sauna, steam room, and treatment rooms o ering everything from massages to facials. For those who like to stay active, the gym is well equipped and hosts regular classes.

Food is central to the Four Seasons Fairways experience, and the quieter seasons o er even more opportunity to indulge. At VIVO, guests can ease into the day with fresh juices, excellent co ee, and breakfast dishes that make the most of seasonal ingredients. Come evening, Amara o ers a more refined a air. With panoramic views and a menu that celebrates modern Portuguese cuisine, dining here feels elegant yet relaxed, especially when paired with a bottle of local wine and the glow

of a Quinta do Lago sunset. Beyond the resort, o -season dining takes on a wonderfully languid rhythm. Long, wine-soaked lunches at places like 2 Passos perched overlooking the ocean, are practically a requirement. The service is unhurried, the views uninterrupted, and the freshly caught seafood, grilled to perfection. The o -season is also ideal for exploring. Golf, of course, remains a major draw with Quinta do Lago’s courses world-renowned, and the fairways are just that little bit greener when you’re not playing in 30-degree heat. The same is true for tennis, padel, or even a gentle cycle along the wooden boardwalks that hug the Ria Formosa. For walkers, the nearby trails winding through pine forests and along the coast are quiet and wild, alive with the colours of nature and the sounds of migrating birds. You might spot flamingos or simply enjoy the salty breeze as you stroll along the sand dunes. For those craving a little adventure or culture, there are treasures to be discovered nearby. The cobbled streets and whitewashed buildings of Faro’s old town are perfect for a slow afternoon of exploring, while a boat trip to Estaminé – a restaurant set on a secluded island in the Ria Formosa – is a must. With its barefoot charm and unbeatable views, it’s

the kind of place that makes you feel as though you’ve stumbled upon a well-kept secret.

And perhaps that’s the real beauty of the Secret Season. At Four Seasons Fairways, everything is designed to let you settle in, slow down, and savour it all. Whether you’re curled up on a terrace with a book, sitting down to a long dinner at Amara, or watching the sun dip beneath the Atlantic after a day spent out in nature, it’s the kind of experience that lingers long after you’ve left.

As the rest of the world rushes on, there’s something quietly wonderful about choosing to pause. And in Quinta do Lago, at Four Seasons Fairways, the Secret Season might just be the most beautiful time of all.

FUTURE READY

The Director of Futures & Innovation at FHS Sloane Square on its comprehensive approach to preparing students for bright futures beyond school

Areplica of Kristen Visbal’s Fearless Girl stands in our entrance hall, encapsulating our belief that our pupils should face down challenge and assert the power of their mind, voice and talent to make a contribution to the world. We take pride in our track record helping students gain entry to prestigious universities (93% of UK applicants secured places at Russell Group universities last year) and for medicine and veterinary courses, for which we have a 100% success rate over the past five years. Our students are empowered to apply for all sorts of courses – from anthropology to agriculture.

Around a fifth attend international universities in the US and Europe Recent admissions include Georgetown, NYU and USC, with our alumnae regularly attending IE and Bocconi universities. Our Futures team is well versed in the di erences between application processes and we have strong relationships with international universities. However, university admissions are just the tip of the iceberg. Informed by the Gatsby

“Students competed in teams to create an artificial reef – currently being built for use o the coast of Thailand”

Benchmarks and the World Economic Forum’s identification of key skills for the future, our programme emphasises creative and analytical thinking throughout pupils’ school journey. From Year 7, we introduce entrepreneurial challenges such as the Young Enterprise £10 Challenge, where girls bring a product to market within four weeks.

This develops resilience, creativity and teamwork, with over half of the Year 7 cohort participating last year.

As part of our super-curricular timetable, students from Year 10 to 13 take part in activities such as Mental Health First Aid, Young Enterprise, interdisciplinary challenges and Law for Beginners. Our Year 10 students competed in teams to create an artificial reef this year. This is currently being built for use o the coast of Thailand – showing students that their ideas can have an immediate impact. The school’s Wellbeing Programme covers practical topics – how to manage a budget, how to study e ectively, tips for independent living – as well as running workshops with organisations such as The Schools Consent Project and Fiscorum (financial literacy).

We place a strong emphasis on oracy, with debating, podcasting, and public speaking woven into the curriculum, to ensure pupils

are able to articulate their ideas confidently and persuasively. We o er Year 12 students the chance to present ‘ideas worth spreading’ to a wider audience, and these are then uploaded to the TEDx channel in perpetuity.

Our Sixth Form retention rate, with 90% of Year 11 pupils electing to stay on each year, indicates the confidence our pupils feel in our Futures Programme. Their confidence is reflected in our October 2024 ISI Inspection Report, which praised pupils’ moral understanding and eagerness to make a di erence by giving back. This is key – by nurturing self-awareness, creativity, analytical thinking and communication skills – and providing real-world opportunities for impact – FHS works to ensure that pupils are future ready.

VALUE ADDED

James Barton, Global Director of MPW, considers what ‘value added’ signifies in a world where tax has been imposed on our independent schools

There’s a peculiar charm to British bureaucracy. It can take something as mundane as Value Added Tax (VAT) and turn it into a philosophical debate about fairness, privilege and the purpose of education. Independent schools now find themselves in the VAT crosshairs, as the government’s decision to remove their tax-exempt status has sent ripples through the sector. To some, this is justice – a long-overdue levelling of a tilted playing field. But amid the applause and outrage, one question lingers: does redistributing resources solve the real issues we face in education?

How do all schools, state and independent alike, use their resources to add real value to students’ lives? And for that, let’s return to the name of this much-debated tax itself. Set aside the ‘T’ (a challenge for HMRC), and we’re left with the heart of the matter: ‘value added’ and what this means in education. It’s not about budgets or rankings but about how schools transform the lives of their students.

For centuries, education wasn’t a numbers game. Medieval grammar schools didn’t chase rankings or collate spreadsheets. They were places of formation, not calibration – focused on instilling discipline and knowledge, even if their methods occasionally leaned into questionable territory (apologies to lefthanded students coerced into writing with their right).

Somewhere along the way, we traded formation for calculation. League tables,

“Value added is not about rankings, but about how schools transform the lives of their students”

introduced with great fanfare, promised clarity, but schools were reduced to data points. The problem isn’t the data itself, but how it is often used. Schools can top the rankings through cherry-picked metrics – test scores here, attendance there – but numbers obscure the quieter victories that define education.

Even the Greeks, trailblazers of Western education, would struggle to comprehend our obsession with league tables. While they valued feats like memorising the Iliad, they also understood the importance of nurturing the soul. Plato didn’t rank his students, nor did Aristotle hand out gold stars. Their goal was wisdom, not quantifiable achievement.

The duty to add value applies universally. Independent schools must prove that their resources are tools for transformation. State schools, now described as ‘beneficiaries’ of this tax reform, must ensure that any extra funding they receive translates into meaningful outcomes.

And what about the students themselves? Schools across both state and independent sectors must ask if they are equipping young people to thrive in an ever-changing world. They must also ask if they are nurturing thinkers, creators, and collaborators – qualities that society desperately needs and that no league table can measure. In the end, education is not about privilege or policy, it’s about potential realised – lives changed for the better.

How to avoid the 11+

More parents want to bypass senior school entrance exams. Jess Harris, Director of Quintessentially Education, o ers tips for alternative pathways

uintessentially Education have seen a marked increase in calls from parents asking how their children can avoid the 11+. Many calls are from international parents, concerned at what they see as a confusing system that puts too much pressure on the child (and their family), but an increasing number of British families also want to bypass these exams.

The 11+ has become a catch-all term for online tests, exams and interviews that children aged 10 or 11 take to gain entry to academically selective senior schools, both state and independent. The original 11+ was an assessment (of English, maths and reasoning) that determined whether children would gain admission to a grammar school. While the UK’s grammar schools were largely disbanded by 1976, a small number remain, and continue to rely upon the 11+ to select children for admission.

The catch-all term ‘11+’ is now more frequently associated with selective independent schools. As a rule of thumb, the more academic a senior school, the more hoops you have to jump through to get in. That said, you can avoid the 11+

altogether, if you consider an all-through school. These are schools that typically welcome children from age 3, 4 or 7 up to the age of 18, negating the need for your child to sit external assessments in Year 6. Some academically stellar schools, such as North London Collegiate, King’s College Wimbledon (KCS), Highgate School and Dulwich College, have an all-through model, with junior schools that ‘feed’ their senior schools. This is designed to ensure that children are well-prepared to the expected standards from an earlier age.

It doesn’t mean pupils won’t sit any assessments at the age of 10 or 11 but they are assessed internally, which reduces the stressful nature of completing the 11+ externally. Assessments are designed to ensure the child can move seamlessly from the junior to the senior school. Of course, many of the most academic through schools remains competitive and some parents believe that the pressure is just transferred to an even earlier admission point (via 7+ exams, for example).

A way of avoiding assessments altogether at the age of 10 or 11 is to opt for a nonselective school. There are a variety of options across London – including The King Alfred School and North Bridge House. Alternatively, parents could consider a senior such as Kew House,

which uses entrance testing but places wider emphasis on interviews, samples of pupil work and school reports.

International schools that follow the International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum don’t require an 11+ assessment. Many of the UK’s top schools o er the IB at Sixth Form, and a select few o er the IB curriculum lower down the school. ACS Schools in Egham, Cobham and Hillingdon and the International School of London (ISL) in Chiswick are all-through and follow the Primary Years (PYP), Middle Years (MYP) and Diploma (DP) IB programmes. And Marymount International in Kingston, which follows MYP and DP, doesn’t have a junior school but o ers Year 7 entry via a

REDUCING THE STRESS OF SENIOR ENTRANCE EXAMS IS A PRESSING CONCERN FOR MANY PARENTS

bespoke ‘Grade 6 assessment programme’. There are other routes which, while not avoiding the 11+ altogether, may reduce the impact. Many schools o er sports or music scholarships. This may enable a more specific, but also a more holistic, review by considering a child’s potential across other spheres. For instance, Whitgift and Millfield both have strong sports scholarship programmes. If you – or your child – have your heart set on an academically selective school, there are still ways to reduce 11+ exam stress. Prepare a shortlist with target schools and an insurance choice and aim for your child to undertake no more than five separate assessments. Plan for your child to

sit centralised tests if you can. Many schools have introduced online tests in recent years such as the ISEB Common Pre-Test. This online, adaptive assessment covers English, maths and verbal & non-verbal reasoning. Although taking the pre-test doesn’t enable students to ‘avoid’ the 11+ style of assessment, it can help avoid multiple individualised exams. Under the ISEB pre-test, students sit one exam in either Year 6 or Year 7 (dependent on the senior school goal), and the test is taken in their prep or primary school. Results are then shared among participating senior schools, so each student is only invited forward to the next stage of the process if their results are considered a potentially

suitable match. This can drastically reduce the number of assessments children have to sit at di erent schools. Another centralised assessment is the London 11+ Consortium Assessment, a single online test for entry to a group of 14 independent day schools for girls, including Francis Holland and Notting Hill & Ealing High. Students sit one exam in the autumn of Year 6 at their own school. Students who pass this test are then invited for interview and possibly a written exam. Again, the aim of the Consortium assessment has been to reduce the number of 11+ papers each pupil has to sit, also reducing the considerable time commitment and stress for children and their families.

SUCCESS SINGLE SEX

While co-education is on the rise, single sex schools are still thriving. We talk to two of them about the secrets of success

The UK’s independent schools have been in constant evolution, but one of the biggest shifts has been to co-education. The arguments are so well known they don’t need reprising, but some schools remain single sex and very popular. Simon Barber, Head of Ludgrove School – with the distinction of remaining a full-boarding prep for boys – says the discussion about single sex schools doesn’t feature when prospective parents visit. “It very, very

rarely comes into conversation when I’m showing parents around. All they want is the best school for their child.”

Certainly, Ludgrove has star credentials academically, with many of its cohort going on to top seniors – Eton, Harrow, Winchester and Radley figure heavily. The school describes itself as ‘unashamedly ambitious for every boy’. But it talks a lot more about happiness than stellar academics. “There are all sorts of eclectic combinations with schools, but if a school is a really happy place, it’s a great school,” says Simon Barber.

“I run a single sex boarding school now, but I’ve also worked in a mixed prep

school and a mixed secondary school with boarding, and all three schools are very happy places. So while I’m not evangelical about single sex schools, obviously, I am evangelical about having a happy, thriving, successful school and we happen to be one of those.”

Perhaps in the perennial debate over co-ed and single sex, we forget that society has shifted. “There’s so much interaction between families and socialising in holidays,” says Simon Barber. “Our boys have educational partnerships with girls’ schools and socials with girls’ schools – and it’s as if they’ve been friends for life.” Families visit at weekends and

sisters are so much a part of the school ‘furniture’ that Ludgrove even o ers a weekend craft club for those who can’t be bothered to get muddy on the sidelines while their brothers play sport. “Sisters are very much part of life here,” says Simon Barber. There’s a homely feel to Ludgrove. The Head’s wife Sophie Barber heads up pastoral care, while Deputy Head Pastoral Jon Pinchin-Hughes and his wife Tory ensure boarding life is cosy and fun – right down to Sunday’s ‘Pinchin Mix’ tuck shop of penny sweets. Simon Barber believes time and space to grow underpins happy childhoods. “What we do well here is grow characters, grow confidence and hopefully grow creativity,” he says. Like Ludgrove, More House has USPs that draw families in. First is its location in the heart of Knightsbridge (Harrods is under 200 metres away). It’s super-convenient for transport connections, with girls travelling here from all over London and beyond. The traditional aesthetics – with woodpanelled walls and mellow red-brick exterior – suggest Edwardian traditions. Not so, for the school was founded in the 1950s. “More House was started by a

group of parents who wanted a better education for their daughters,” says Head Claire Phelps. So, a forwardthinking approach was embedded from the start. Opening first in Kensington, it moved here in the 1970s.

Another draw is More House’s faith-based foundation. “It’s a Catholic school – very much a progressive Catholic school – so within that we have got an incredibly diverse community,” says Claire Phelps. “We have students of all faiths and no faith at all, although we have a Catholic ethos and values which underpin school life.” It is a small school, with individual attention to match – classes of 12-16 are typical and at A level there may be between two and four in a class.

This means teachers know each student’s personality, aspirations and how they learn best. “We have girls applying to Oxford and Cambridge and others who are doing performing arts and digital production in a BTEC – we’ve got that range. Diversity is one of the biggest things we celebrate, and that’s not just in culture but in each student’s aspirations and the journey they are on.”

The makeup of the school is, in her experience, way down the list of

“Diversity is one of the biggest things we celebrate, and that’s not just culture but the students’ aspirations”

parent priorities. “A lot of our parents will look at a group of schools, co-ed and single sex.” While there will always be some who consider that single sex brings academic benefits (for instance, take up of STEM subjects), this sits within a broader set of parameters. “We find that the parents just feel it’s going to be a nurturing and safe environment that will grow self-esteem and confidence – which is particularly important with girls,” she says. “We definitely allow girls to be themselves and not conform, in their subject choices and out of school.”

Like Simon Barber, Claire Phelps says the debate around single sex forgets young people’s life experiences. Today, girls and boys mix freely in so many settings. For instance, many More House students make their way here on public transport. “They have brothers, they go to clubs, and at More House we work with boys’ and co-ed schools – for example through our choir.”

A Pre-Senior opened here last September in direct response to parents’ requests. They said they wanted the option to join from KS2 (Year 5), also neatly avoiding the 11+ hurdle that is such a feature in London education (although More House is also a member of the London 11+ Consortium designed to reduce the entry exam burden).

Claire Phelps believes choice remains critical to independent education and, while most parents are open to a variety of options, all seek the same thing. “Happy children – you can see that when you walk around a school,” she says. “That, for me, is the thing that parents buy into. They want to see a community where children are thriving and feel happy.”
