ABSOLUTELY’S June issue highlights

Back in March, for Mother's Day, I treated my dear old Mum to a five-star lunch in London, the full works. She is pretty social, my Mum, but even she was taken aback by the effort I put into the day itself and her beaming smile made it all worth it. But, when it comes to Father's Day, I am a little stumped.

Meltdown

That's not to say Dad doesn't deserve to be treated, but he's rather like me: simple. We are both never happier than when we are at home, with some free time to simply potter about, maybe doing the odd job here or there, or just putting the feet up and letting out a big sigh, with a nice cup of tea on the side.

Berkshire and Buckinghamshire, however, have other ideas. Open your eyes and there's plenty out there to treat your own father figure, things that they may not even realise they will love. From local spirit sampling (definitely one for Dad) to axe throwing (judging by his dodgy ticker, probably not), we have come up with some truly daddy ideas.

Also, our Home special returns with fresh interiors inspiration. Perhaps that's all I need, sit Dad down with this issue and stick the kettle on...

Absolutely discovers why there is nowhere quite like Wasing Estate to mark the summer solstice

“It's a programme of music, nature and connection at one of the UK's most beautiful outdoor venues”

Wasing Estate has announced the full line-up for Solstice at Wasing 2025, now reimagined as a weekend festival hosted at the stunning venue, The Woodland at Wasing. Taking place from Friday 20th-Sunday 22nd June 2025, the festival celebrates the Rite of Summer and will feature Alex Serra, Âpe Chimba, Sam Lee, The Egg, Afrosideral, Tritha and many more. This year’s Saturday night fireside headliner is Âpe Chimba and the Sunday headliner is Alex Serra. They join previously announced world-renowned artists James Blake (Solo Piano), Anoushka Shankar, Salif Keita, Nubiyan Twist, K.O.G. and The Turbans. Together, they complete a rich and diverse weekend programme of music, nature and connection at one of the UK’s most beautiful outdoor venues.

Barcelona-born Alex Serra brings his astonishing, deeply atmospheric music to The Woodland, shaped by extensive travels across Latin America and South Africa. Blending downtempo, soul, reggae and dub, Alex’s immersive live sets o er audiences a transformative experience combining music, dance and visual art.

Âpe Chimba is a multi-instrumentalist, vocalist and ceremonial artist whose music bridges ancient and contemporary worlds. Drawing on tribal, folk and sacred traditions, his performances combine traditional instruments, chant and modern production to create immersive sound journeys.

Sam Lee, the folk custodian of the native song of the British Isles and leading voice in the environmental movement, will bring his deeply rooted connection to nature and the land’s ancient song traditions to the weekend. Across four acclaimed albums, Sam has become a touchstone chronicler of indigenous song culture and a passionate

advocate for the natural world. A close friend of Wasing, he returns following celebrated appearances at the estate’s Medicine, Solstice and Equinox festivals.

Festival favourites The Egg make their debut at Solstice with their infectious brand of rocktronic, funk and houseinspired big textural dance music. Famed for legendary six-hour improvised sets and often dubbed The Grateful Dead of rave music, The Egg’s live performances are unforgettable, blending electronic and live instrumentation with samples, video triggers and vocoded vocals.

Cuban rapper, producer and multiinstrumentalist Afrosideral (Kumar Sublevao-Beat) adds his distinctive sound, moving dynamically between hiphop, jazz, world music and electronica, all rooted in Afro-Cuban rhythms. His mystical, versatile performances seamlessly journey from downtempo to dancefloor without losing authenticity.

Completing the new additions is Tritha, a golden voice of global fusion, who draws upon three decades of training in Indian classical music. A music activist and teacher of sound healing and voice therapy, Tritha has evolved her practice into boundary-pushing contemporary works, merging Indian classical with psychedelic rock and electronic collaborations. Her performance promises a rich tapestry of tradition and modernity, celebrating the healing power of sound.

Saturday headliner James Blake is a critically acclaimed GRAMMY®, Ivor Novello and Mercury Prize Awardwinning UK singer, songwriter, multiinstrumentalist and producer. His performance will be an ‘intimate piano show’, perfectly complementing the beauty and peace of Solstice at Wasing.

The Fireside Sessions on the Friday night will be headlined by globally

acclaimed artist Anoushka Shankar, and sparks the solstice celebration’s shift from day to night with special performances around the fire. For those seeking a freespirited experience, The Fireside Sessions take place by the Sacred Glade fire, giving a moment to connect with nature under the stars. The following morning a guided Sunrise Ceremony will take place at dawn to welcome the new sun. Set on Wasing Estate, The Woodland is a stunning enclave right in the heart of the countryside. A unique and mindful space, this is a truly transportive venue to see defining live acts, fully immersed in nature. Wasing Estate itself is heralded for the way it breaks the mould for country estates and this ethos is reflected in the concerts; Wasing hosts healing retreats enriched with nature immersion, wellbeing festivals, and restorative events with a focus on the connection between the planet and its people. As well as the music, Wasing o ers

a host of wellbeing packages at the festival, including nature connection meditations, breathwork sessions and Wild Swim & Sauna sessions in the secluded woodland lake and wood-fired sauna. Solstice also o ers a jam-packed schedule of nature-based children’s activities including family yoga, crafting, circus skills and parachute games.

This year’s event follows Solstice at Wasing's hugely successful event in 2024, which featured sensational shows from the likes of Nick Mulvey and Rodrigo y Gabriela.

IT’S THE DADDY

Exploring 10 quirky things to do in Berkshire and Buckinghamshire for Father’s Day

Father’s Day is the perfect excuse to treat Dad to something a little out of the ordinary. If you’re looking to break free from the typical Sunday roast and tie combo, Berkshire and Buckinghamshire have a surprisingly rich spread of quirky, o beat activities to celebrate the father figure in your life. From falconry to vintage trains, this list of ten unique ideas promises a memorable day out, whatever your Dad’s idea of fun might be.

GO BACK IN TIME

Step into a bygone era aboard the lovingly restored Chinnor and Princes Risborough Railway in Buckinghamshire. Dads who appreciate vintage charm will love chugging through the Chiltern Hills on a steam or diesel locomotive. The train often hosts themed experiences: think “Real Ale Trains” or afternoon teas in old-school compartments. Check ahead for Father’s Day specials, which often include a drink token and a commemorative ticket. It’s nostalgia on wheels.

TRY AXE THROWING

Nothing says “Happy Father’s Day” quite like hurling axes at wooden targets. At Go Ape Bracknell, try out this surprisingly

satisfying and competitive activity in a safe, controlled environment. Whether Dad’s a secret Viking or just needs a stress reliever, this is a great way to bond while letting o steam.

MOVIE BEHIND THE SCENES

This one requires planning (and luck), but if you can snag a ticket to an open day or special tour at the legendary Pinewood Studios in Iver Heath, you’ll be in for a treat. Home to the James Bond franchise and countless British film classics,

CLIVEDEN ESTATE

Pinewood is a cinephile’s paradise. Check for any Father’s Day-related events –sometimes local tour operators run limited behind-the-scenes experiences.

GET FALCONRY-FOCUSED

Located near Reading, Feathers and Fur Falconry Centre o ers hands-on experiences with hawks, owls, and falcons.

SEAN CONNERY
MICROLIGHT PLANE

Their “Birds of Prey Experience” is a brilliant, tactile way to get up close with these incredible creatures. Watch Dad’s face light up as he dons the leather glove and a majestic bird swoops onto his arm.

BOOK A COMEDY CANAL CRUISE

How about a giggle on the Kennet & Avon Canal? Some local operators in Hungerford o er narrowboat cruises with quirky twists – comedy, music, or mystery themes. These laid-back waterborne adventures are slow, scenic, and spiced with local humour or entertainment. Pack a picnic or book a catered option for full enjoyment.

SOLVE A MYSTERY

Cliveden, with its opulent National Trust

TOUR WINDSOR BY HORSE-DRAWN CARRIAGE

Sure, Windsor is full of classic sightseeing spots, but why not give it a quirky spin by touring it via horse-drawn carriage? Companies like Windsor Carriages o er picturesque rides through Windsor Great Park with guides who mix humour and history in equal measure. It’s an unusual way to see the sights and makes for a great photo op.

SAMPLE LOCAL SPIRITS AT A DISTILLERY TOUR

estate and intriguing history, has more than just stunning gardens – it has a reallife maze. Spend an afternoon wandering the grounds, then let Dad test his wits in the small but charming garden maze. Follow up with a cream tea or a pint at a nearby pub for the full Sunday experience.

TAKE A MICROLIGHT FLIGHT

If your Dad is the adventurous type, book him a trial flight in a microlight aircraft. Companies like Progress Flying School in Marlow operate a fleet of microlight aircraft known as ‘3-Axis’ aircraft, and o er introductory lessons that allow you to soar over the beautiful Buckinghamshire landscape. It’s part thrill, part serenity, and all unforgettable.

Forget wine tasting – how about a locally crafted gin or rum experience instead? The Henley Distillery o ers engaging, hands-on tours that include tastings, cocktail demonstrations, and insights into the distilling process. Many even let you bottle your own blend to take home.

MINI GOLF MADNESS

If you’re after something hilariously light-hearted and indoors (just in case the weather doesn’t cooperate), take Dad to one of the region’s quirky mini-golf courses. Maidenhead Mini-Golf is 18 holes of dinosaur themed mini-golf. Located at Braywick Park in Maidenhead (opposite the new Braywick Leisure Centre), each hole gives a truly memorable and enjoyable experience regardless of your ability. Absolutely takes a look at this year’s Meltdown, as imagined by Little Simz

MISS UNDERSTOOD

There’s an exciting season ahead as this year’s Meltdown – the annual festival held in London, featuring a mix of music, art, performance and film – is curated by Little Simz. She follows in the footsteps of musical greats including Grace Jones, Chaka Khan, Nick Cave, David Bowie, Elvis Costello and

Lee Scratch Perry to invite her favourite artists to perform in the Festival Hall. Her festival showcases a bold line-up of international artists who celebrate fearless creativity and break musical boundaries.

On Friday 13th June, GRAMMY®nominated R&B singer-songwriter Mahalia will bring her signature ‘luvergirl’ energy to the Royal Festival Hall. Her set promises to radiate self-assurance and usher in her

new musical era. The party continues on Saturday 14th June with a high-energy performance from Tiwa Savage, the queen of Afrobeats and MTV EMA-winning Nigerian star, whose influence across the African music scene remains unmatched.

On Sunday 16th June, Canadian instrumental group BADBADNOTGOOD – winners of two GRAMMY® Awards – will perform their genre-defying blend of jazz

and hip-hop. Known for collaborations with Tyler the Creator and Kendrick Lamar, their sound continues to reshape modern music.

The legendary James Blake, winner of both the Ivor Novello and Mercury Prize awards, will take to the Royal Festival Hall stage on Thursday 20th June for a special solo piano performance. With his recent release CMYK 002 – Let Her Know, he a rms his place as one of the most influential behind-the-scenes forces in contemporary music.

Queen Elizabeth Hall will feature a diverse line-up including Nubya Garcia on Wednesday 19th June. The London-born saxophonist will showcase her fusion of jazz, dub, classical, and R&B, with her

latest album Odyssey earning widespread critical praise. The following night, Thursday 20th June, powerhouse vocalist MEGA (Megaishername) will deliver a soul-stirring set. Her music, rooted in vulnerability and empowerment, will be supported by rising viral sensation Jon Poppii, known for his emotional cover of Past Lives by BØRNS.

In the Purcell Room on Monday 17th June, audiences can catch Kara Jackson, an Illinois-based singer-songwriter with a poetic blend of folk and alt-country, and a voice both rich and resonant.

These new additions join a stellar line-up already announced, including Little Simz’ special performance with

Chineke! Orchestra, along with Ghetts, Jon Batiste, Lola Young, Sasha Keable, The Streets, Yukimi, and BINA.

Little Simz, born Simbiatu Ajikawo in 1994 in Islington, London, is a British rapper, singer, and actress known for her sharp lyricism, genre-defying music, and introspective storytelling. Rising through the UK’s underground hip-hop scene, she gained critical acclaim with her third studio album, Grey Area (2019), which won the Mercury Prize and an Ivor Novello Award. Her follow-up, Sometimes I Might Be Introvert (2021), further solidified her status as one of the most important voices in contemporary UK music, earning widespread praise for its ambitious production and personal themes.

Blending hip-hop, soul, funk, and orchestral elements, Little Simz’s music explores identity, race, mental health, and empowerment. She often writes candidly about her experiences as a Black woman navigating both the music industry and personal life. Beyond music, she has acted in shows such as Top Boy and lent her voice to various creative projects, showcasing her versatility as an artist.

Known for maintaining creative independence, Little Simz releases her music through her own label, AGE 101 Music. Her commitment to authenticity, artistic integrity, and social commentary has earned her a dedicated fanbase and a respected place in modern British culture.

On the Meltdown line-up, Little Simz says: “My team and I have prepared 11 days of art, music, workshops and more. Meltdown 2025 the Simz way is going to be epic. I’ll see you there.”

BYGONE ERA

A spectacular two-day festival of performance, art, music, food and drink set at Waddesdon Manor revives an old tradition

Inspired by Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild’s (1839-1898) annual summer garden party – known as The Baron’s Treat – Summer Fest is a 2025 counterpart that promises a feast of pop-up theatre and musical performances, culinary delights, wine tastings and family activities galore. During the late 19th century, Baron Ferdinand hosted legendary ‘Saturday to Monday’ house parties at Waddesdon Manor, which became synonymous with lavish entertaining. So much so that Queen Victoria was tempted to visit in 1890. Now, this June, visitors can experience the opulence of Waddesdon as Ferdinand’s guests once did – roaming the beautiful, manicured gardens;

exploring the Manor’s sumptuous interiors and treasure-filled rooms; and enjoying first-class entertainment. Summer Fest will see the North Front of the house transformed with flowers and garlands, long tables for picnicking and spaces throughout the gardens for performances, creating the perfect setting for a weekend of culture, music and interactive theatre by top artists from across the UK. Among the weekend’s highlights will be Motionhouse’s internationally acclaimed show, WILD (on 21st and 22nd June) making its debut at Waddesdon with an aweinspiring fusion of circus and dance.

Meanwhile, on Sunday 22nd June Mr. Wilson’s Second Liners bring a

“THE EVENT IS INSPIRED BY BARON FERDINAND DE ROTHSCHILD'S LAVISH ENTERTAINING”

rip-roaring mash-up of New Orleans jazz meets 90s club classics to this leafy corner of Buckinghamshire. Combining both the vibrant traditions of the Deep South and the spirit of Manchester’s legendary Hacienda scene, the vision is an anarchic extravaganza, bursting with colour and sound, rallying impromptu raves and rousing audiences young and old into a joyful frenzy.

Elsewhere in the grounds, expect to encounter a variety of other extraordinary performing artists and musicians, who will surprise and delight you in equal measure. Food and drink lovers will also find plenty to savour. Meet local producers at the Artisan Market, treat yourself to delicious snacks and nibbles from a selection of the finest street food traders and enjoy a cheeky tipple with a refreshing glass of something at one of the pop-up bars. For families, there’s a wealth of fun and creative experiences to keep everyone happy. Guests of all ages can unleash their inner Banksy and help street artist Scott Walker to create a huge new mural, children can decorate and plant their own flowerpots to take home, and visitors can also join the Junkyard Orchestra, playing upcycled musical flowers to create a mellifluous soundscape for all the other weekend activities.

From the world's first sparkling wine region, comes this crisp and fruity Languedoc fizz. Soft and appealing with a lively mousse and a hint of apple. A crowd-pleaser!

This is a lovely little find in Reading. We initially fell in love with it thanks to their lunch options, but over time they have evolved the menu to include some fantastic brunch options. “ANYTHING THAT IS FRESHLY IN-SEASON IS GOING TO TASTE FANTASTIC"

Can you give us a potted history of your

career in food before The Braywood?

uncle’s pub as a kitchen porter where I worked after school. I got snowed in one that’s where I fell in love with cooking.

Christmas and spent almost a week there so the chefs got me helping with veg prep – and

My parents wanted me to go to University, but I knew by then that cooking was the only path for me. I worked at The Hand and Flowers while I was at college, which opened my eyes to that much higher standard of cookery, but my first ‘proper’ job was at The Compleat Angler Hotel. Since then, I’ve worked at Gordon Ramsay’s Petrus, L’Ortolan, and in each of WSH Restaurants’ kitchens – The Clockspire and The Woodspeen, where I was most recently head chef.

Q Do you think it’s possible to define your style of cooking?

A We take influence from a number of cuisines, but we are a contemporary British restaurant at heart. We work really hard to source meat, fish and produce within the UK and as locally as possible, though we’re not farmto-fork. Quality is the key factor for us. So for example, we choose Scottish hand-dived

scallops as there’s simply nothing better, but at the same time we are working with a hyperlocal egg supplier. Seasonality has a big role to play in that quality and we’re always working with the freshest seasonal ingredients.

Q What was exciting about the project at The Braywood?

A Starting fresh, starting new – the possibilities are endless. I was excited to spread my wings and push each dish just that little bit further. The Braywood’s location and heritage meant we had to start at a really high level and we continue to challenge ourselves.

Q How have you approached the menus?

A As always, it starts with seasonality – quite simply because anything that is freshly inseason is going to taste fantastic – and then it’s about texture, aroma, perfect flavour pairings, and the visual impact. And we listen to what our guests love. Favourite dishes emerge very quickly, and we’re able to learn and adapt.

here are a lot of terrible eyebrows out there. And a lot of beautiful ones. Getting it right is the di erence between looking your best and looking awful – or just strange. I have been worrying about my brows for some time – why so sparse? Are they disappearing? – and pencilling them in daily is not my best skill. But when I meet Karen Betts’ assistant, Sue, in London, I’m maybe a bit defensive, because I know exactly what I don’t want. No heavy, angular brows for me please. No brows that look like they’ve been done. I needn’t have worried. Karen is all about the natural brow – and she will in fact refuse to deliver those terrible eyebrows that I fear. Even if I wanted them. Many of her clients come to her with alopecia, or after cancer treatment, because her skill lies in creating beautiful, and – importantly – natural-looking brows. “Less is more,” she says. The process is essentially tattooing, she says – and it’s less painful than threading. First she draws on what she thinks my brows should look like, and we negotiate a bit on length and width – and then she uses her personally designed ink tool to imprint the colour on my brows. It takes about ten minutes in total and feels a bit scratchy – but chatting to Karen is so entertaining that I barely notice. Immediate results are far more intense than the final fade, and for the next few days I receive helpful texts updating me on the healing process. Each treatment requires a single top up in a few weeks, so watch this space.

Wood craft

A look at Kaare Klint’s English Chair in the making

Kaare Klint presented The English Chair at the Cabinetmakers’ Autumn Exhibition in Copenhagen in 1931. He was inspired by old English chairs from the 18th century – it was typical for him to revisit existing designs in order to optimise them. In The English Chair, Klint has masterfully used wood as a decorative element by incorporating it as a contrasting material on the chair legs and in the form of advanced intarsia on the armrests, backrest and under the seat. The back, sides and seat are made of French canework, and it takes a skilful weaver almost a week to complete just one chair.

Today, the English Chair is crafted according to the finest cabinetmaking techniques by the skilled master cabinetmakers and apprentices at The Lab, Carl Hansen

& Son’s in-house apprentice workshop at the company’s furniture factory on Funen in Denmark. Here, the apprentices learn about original woodworking techniques and are taught to perform traditional cabinetmaking tasks such as selecting wood from the sawmill, measuring the wood up with hand-held templates, cutting the wood on a traditional band saw, working with a spokeshave, upholstery and much more. Although the design of The English Chair is refined and pared back on first glance, the complexity of the craftsmanship is incredibly high. All the wood of the English Chair is carefully handpicked. Each raw plank is meticulously scrutinised to find the perfect piece without any faults or cracks. When the flawless plank is found, the model templates are measured by hand and cut out from the same board. Here, the chair is made from a piece of oak which gives a Nordic, temporary expression, but the chair can be made in any wood type.

It takes almost a week to

After being measured, the wood is cut on stationary milling and routing machines with traditional routing templates, just like cabinetmakers did 100 years ago. The delicate intarsias are cut and fitted by hand with a block plane, which demands great precision and many small adjustments. Once the intarsia is carefully glued into the frame, a card scraper is used to ensure a smooth surface.

The chair’s frame is assembled with mortise and tenon joints by hand. Like in traditional cabinetmaking, all parts are glued together without any use of screws or dowels: a complex assembly that ensures great strength. Afterwards, the glue is left to dry before the holes for the French cane weave are drilled. It takes one cabinetmaker a full eight hours to drill a total of 300 holes by hand.

The English Chair is surface treated the traditional way, resulting in an extremely durable wooden surface with great depth and as smooth as silk. At first, the chair is carefully sanded starting from 120-grit and moving all the way up to 320-grit. Then, the grains are raised with water and intermediate sanded twice. This ensures clean pores, a soft surface and an even distribution of the oil. Afterwards, the chair is treated with the first coat of

complete just one chair

Danish linseed oil, intermediate sanded, a second coat of oil, then sanded one last time before a coat of oil and lacquer is applied. Finally, the surface is buffed and polished with lambswool.

The English Chair is branded with a custom-made branding iron and delivered with a brass plate engraved with the chair’s unique serial number. After the surface treatment, the French cane weaving starts. It takes 14 working days to complete the back, seat and sides of one English Chair in a delicate pattern. The back and seat cushion is upholstered by hand. The anillin leather is handpicked from the finest tanneries and carefully examined for marks. Cushions are made with traditional upholstery techniques and the leather is sewn by hand on the front, back and sides.

Each English Chair is delivered with an owner certificate and a handwritten note from the CEO of Carl Hansen & Søn, Knud Erik Hansen.

building Character

Absolutely explores the transformation of an historic home in Buckinghamshire

CLAIRE GARNER

Claire Garner, founder and director of Claire Garner Design Studio, is known for her warm, timeless interiors that blend authenticity with liveability. We caught up with Claire to talk about a remarkable recent project in Buckinghamshire, a home with history, charm and a once-crumbling interior. Claire and her team’s approach to breathing new life into period properties lies at the heart of this transformation.

Q This project had such a compelling backstory. What was your first impression of the house?

A The house had so much character. It was originally part of the Rothschild Estate and had once served as two separate workshops for carriage repairs, so it had this really unique architectural story. From the outside, it looked like a dream – classic proportions, beautiful symmetry – but the interior had been untouched for around 30 years. There were trees literally growing through the

back door and plants in the bathtub! But I could see the potential instantly.

Q What were the biggest design challenges you faced with the renovation?

A The biggest challenge was reworking the layout while preserving the building’s charm. It had been altered in an ad-hoc way over the years, with two kitchens, ground-floor bedrooms added for care workers and a very muddled flow, so we gutted it and completely reconfigured the floorplan. Structurally, we made significant changes, adding a second floor where there had been a mezzanine, repositioning windows, updating all plumbing and electrics. Because the home is in a conservation area, we had to be sensitive with any external alterations, though we did get permission to redesign the front porch.

Q How would you describe the overall look and feel?

A It’s calm, classic and beautifully understated. We worked with a very soft, neutral palette inspired by the surrounding countryside and layered natural textures

throughout to create a sense of warmth. Tumbled limestone flagstones were laid across much of the ground floor, bringing an aged, authentic feel that grounds the space. The kitchen was carefully chosen to complement this palette – painted in a gentle, chalky tone that sits harmoniously within the wider design. In the sitting room, painted in Farrow & Ball’s ‘Dead Salmon’, we introduced a natural raffia wallpaper to the back of the cabinetry, adding both a tonal lift and a subtle textural backdrop. With a new log burner and a sisal carpet underfoot, the space feels warm, welcoming and perfectly suited to family life.

Q How did you ensure the design met your clients’ dayto-day needs as a family?

A Functionality is always at the heart of our process. This is a busy household with teenagers and a dog, so we needed durable materials that could stand up to real life without compromising on style. Every decision, from flooring to storage, was considered with practicality in mind. We included bespoke joinery and every room

had to feel inviting, lived-in and cohesive. It’s about finding that balance between beauty and functionality.

Q What advice would you give someone buying a home that needs a full renovation?

A Don’t be afraid to take on a project, but do bring in your team early, especially your interior designer. We work hand-in-hand with architects, builders and trades from the very start to ensure that layouts, lighting plans and finishes all align from day one. That collaboration is key to avoiding costly changes later on. Also, trust your instincts. If a property speaks to you, there’s usually a

Q What does a “Claire Garner home” always include?

A At Claire Garner Design Studio, we pride ourselves on offering a warm and personalised approach to every client, building a deep understanding of their lifestyle and preferences. We love to work collaboratively with our clients to design homes that are both functional and reflective of their personality and sense of style. Each home is unique, which is why we create tailored design packages based on our client's design requirements. Our goal is to transform spaces into havens that truly resonate with each client's unique identity and lifestyle.

reason and often, the most rewarding homes are the ones that require a little imagination.

Q What are your top tips for creating a timeless interior style?

A Start with a colour palette that won’t date, think soft neutrals, muted tones and classic shades which bring a sense of warmth and quiet sophistication. Then, introduce texture through natural materials like wood, stone and linen, layering them in with cushions, throws, rugs and timeless furnishings. Creating a balance of colour and texture adds depth and character, while keeping the space inviting and harmonious for years to come.

What sets us apart is our down-to-earth and approachable nature, coupled with the strong relationships we build with our clients. We understand that embarking on a house build or renovation project can be a lengthy journey, which is why we prioritise building a connection and trust with our clients throughout the process.

Our ultimate goal is to create warm, authentic designs that feel like home. We achieve this by meticulously considering every detail to ensure the design aligns seamlessly with our clients’ lives, creating homes that are as beautiful as they are liveable.

Modern heritage

HollandGreen breathes

new life into a historic Berkshire home, balancing character and contemporary comfort

Tucked deep in the Berkshire countryside, surrounded by undulating hills and wide-open skies, sits a 16th-century farmhouse that tells a tale of thoughtful transformation. Once a sleepy, timeworn residence, the property has recently undergone a full-scale renovation by multidisciplinary design practice HollandGreen, retaining its centuries-old charm while seamlessly embracing the demands of modern family life.

DESIGN WITH SENSITIVITY AND SOUL

“The home had all the ingredients for something truly special,” says Maddy Bull, senior interior designer at HollandGreen. “It’s packed with character, and our clients

were wonderfully open in their brief. They trusted us to lead with creativity, which gave us the freedom to sensitively reinvent the space.”

From the outset, the ambition was clear: to create a contemporary, liveable home that still celebrated the building’s heritage. “The aim was always to blend old and new,” explains Maddy. “We weren’t trying to mimic the historic details, but instead to design something timeless – something that feels as though it belongs here.”

AN EXTENSION ROOTED IN PLACE

Central to the redesign was the addition of a new rear extension, unseen from the front elevation, yet fundamental to how the house functions today. This carefully considered structure now accommodates the kitchen, dining area, and informal living room. A flat roof and clean archi-

tectural lines subtly distinguish it from the original pitched-roof form, offering a contemporary counterpoint without overwhelming the character of the farmhouse.

“We wanted the extension to be clearly of its time,” says Maddy. “It’s a quiet intervention – modern but respectful. You feel the shift in era when you step into it, but it still speaks to the wider language of the house.”

THE KITCHEN: A NEW HEART OF THE HOME

At the heart of the extension lies a showstopping kitchen – elegant yet functional, traditional yet undeniably modern. “We opted for in-frame Shaker cabinetry by Langstaff, hand-painted in a beige-green,” Maddy says. “It’s a grounded, timeless colour that changes subtly with the light.”

The central island is a standout feature, combining a sleek waterfall-edge quartz worktop with a stained timber base that adds warmth and texture. The attention to detail extends to the unlacquered brass Perrin & Rowe taps, which will naturally patinate over time, adding richness and depth.

Importantly, this wasn’t simply a cosmetic upgrade. “The kitchen used to be in a completely different part of the house,” Maddy explains. “By relocating it to the extension, we were able to create an expansive, openplan space that truly reflects how the family lives today. It’s a space that invites gathering, sharing, and connection.”

CLEVER STORAGE WITH CHARACTER

Just off the main kitchen area lies one of the home’s most charming features: a walk-in pantry, carved from what was once a corridor. Here, bespoke joinery in a deep

green hue sets a dramatic tone. “It shifts from green to a blue-green depending on the time of day,” says Maddy. “We added grooved panelling at the back to give it texture and a sense of depth. It’s a small space, but one with a lot of personality.”

A DINING AREA STEEPED IN HERITAGE

The adjacent dining area takes a more restrained approach. Here, the emphasis is on celebrating what was already there. Exposed brickwork, original beams and a restored fi replace speak of the farmhouse’s rich past, while the introduction of a bespoke live-edge oak dining table brings a touch of crafted contemporary flair. The table is surrounded by warm-toned chairs that echo the pale oak flooring, anchoring the room in natural materials.

“The clients were really hands-on when it came to furnishings,” Maddy shares. “They had great taste and a clear sense of budget, so we worked together on a curated shopping list to guide their decisions while staying true to the design ethos.”

From the kitchen to the dining area and through to the relaxed sitting zone at the far end of the extension, the layout flows seamlessly – open-plan but softly zoned. “It’s a home made for family life,” Maddy reflects.

EVERYDAY PRACTICALITY, ELEGANTLY DESIGNED

Back inside the original footprint of the house, modern living continues to meet historic architecture in clever ways. A newly introduced utility room and boot room sit just off the entrance hall – both designed to handle the bustle of daily life.

Here, bespoke joinery painted in a traditional green provides ample, thoughtfully considered storage. Open shelving, tall cupboards and integrated bench seating ensure everything has its place, from muddy boots to school bags. Underfoot, tumbled limestone flooring offers durability and timeless texture, chosen not only for its visual appeal, but also for its low maintenance, making it ideal for a busy household.

“These spaces are hardworking but still beautiful,” says Maddy. “They’re often overlooked in design, but we believe they’re just as important as the showpiece rooms.”

BATHROOMS THAT ELEVATE THE EVERYDAY

Upstairs, the transformation continues in the private quarters. The principal suite is a calming, considered sanctuary, reconfigured to incorporate a generous dressing area with custom cabinetry by Langstaff. The en-suite bathroom is a study in understated luxury, featuring vaulted ceilings and soft natural light.

“We used hand-cut Zellige tiles in the shower, which bring a lovely irregularity and texture,” Maddy notes. “The vanity, custom made by Parker Howley & Co, has

reeded drawers and a Carrara marble top – elegant without being flashy.” The palette throughout remains soft and muted offering a serene retreat from the bustle of everyday life.

A THOUGHTFUL LEGACY

In every room, HollandGreen’s design approach remains consistent: responsive, respectful, and richly layered. This is not a home that’s been stripped of its past, but rather one that has been carefully updated.

“It’s not about erasing the past - it’s about building on it,” Maddy says. “The beauty of a project like this lies in the balance.”

This Berkshire farmhouse is more than a renovation. It’s a story of evolution – of heritage carried forward with heart and creativity, and a compelling example of how modern design can enhance, rather than compete with, the buildings of our past.

Decades of design

Almost 20 years ago, Berkshirebased Daniel Smith launched Danetti, the luxury furniture brand. He tells us how he did it

Q Before Danetti, what was your background in the design industry?

A Before founding Danetti, I had handson experience in the furniture industry, particularly through working closely with high end European manufacturers. That time gave me an appreciation for aspirational design and a solid understanding of production processes, as well as insight into what customers were really looking for in their homes.

Q Was there a particular moment that inspired you to launch Danetti?

A Yes, there was a clear moment when I realised the market lacked contemporary furniture that struck the right balance between aspirational design and everyday attainability. I knew from experience that great design didn’t have to be out of reach and I saw an opportunity to build a brand that could offer just that.

Q Was it tough to get off the ground?

A Like every business, we had our fair share of challenges in the beginning.

“It’s contemporary furniture that feels aspirational but still within reach”

From building supplier relationships to getting the logistics right, it was a learning curve. But staying focused on our values – quality, considered, great designs – kept us moving forward.

Q From day one, what did you want to offer?

A From the very beginning, the aim was clear: to offer contemporary furniture that feels aspirational but is still within reach. We wanted to combine clean, modern design with a focus on quality and fair pricing, without compromising on the customer experience.

Q How do you look back on the early days of the business?

A There’s a lot of pride when I think back to those early days. It was a period of hard work, fast learning and big ambition. Starting something from scratch and watching it grow into what Danetti is today has been incredibly rewarding.

Q How would you say you have evolved over the years?

A We’ve evolved by constantly listening to our customers and refining what we offer. From expanding our product ranges to improving our online experience and delivery services, every step forward has been about making design more accessible and enjoyable for the people who choose Danetti for their homes.

Q Have our tastes when it comes to homeware changed in the two decades that Danetti has been in existence?

A Absolutely. Over the last 20 years, we’ve seen a real shift in how people think about their homes. Furniture is no longer just functional – it’s expressive. Customers are more design-savvy than ever, looking for pieces that reflect their personal style while still offering comfort and practicality. The rise of social media and home inspiration platforms have also made people more confident in experimenting with their interiors, mixing textures, colours and finishes in a way that feels more curated and individual.

DANIEL SMITH

Q Today, what do you offer?

A We offer thoughtfully designed furniture and accessories for every room in the home – from living spaces and dining areas to bedrooms and hallways. Our collection includes everything from bar stools, dining chairs and tables, to sideboards, coffee tables, beds, mattresses, bedside tables, rugs, mirrors, lighting and accessories. Everything we create is designed with quality, functionality and aesthetic appeal in mind.

Q Are there certain types of furniture that are particularly popular right now?

A Yes, we’re seeing strong demand for ceramic and marble-effect finishes, especially on sideboards, dining and coffee tables. Real and faux leather dining chairs and bar stools also continue to resonate with customers, as do organic textures and materials that bring a natural warmth into the home. Sofas with a contemporary aesthetic – clean lines, soft curves and textural fabrics – are also popular right now.

Q What’s new from Danetti that you are excited about?

A We’re particularly excited about our upcoming collections that feature bolder shapes, new textures and materials often reserved for high-end interiors. Think sculptural silhouettes, rich finishes and layers of tactile detail. We’re also expanding into

more versatile textiles, moving beyond velvet into a wider range of textured fabrics that add depth and warmth to each piece.

Q Do you offer advice to customers when it comes to buying a statement piece for the home?

A Yes, our team is always here to help customers find that perfect hero piece. A statement item should anchor the room while still feeling cohesive with the rest of the space. We encourage people to be bold with shape or material but also consider longevity and how that piece fits into the flow of their home. A great statement piece is one you’ll love for years, not just a season.

Q Do you follow trends – and what’s going to be hot this summer?

A We don’t chase every trend, but we do selectively bring in those that complement our signature Danetti look. This summer is all about organic forms, bold and expressive designs and richly layered textures. You’ll see curved lines, sculptural furniture and tactile materials coming through strongly – pieces that not only look beautiful but feel great to live with.

Q How do you see the future of Danetti evolving?

A At Danetti, the future is about pushing creative boundaries while remaining true to our core values of design, quality, and accessibility. We’re focusing on bold statement pieces, richer materials, and more sculptural, organic forms that bring personality and depth to every space. Inspired by high-end design, we’re introducing unexpected finishes and refined shapes – reimagined for everyday living. As we continue to evolve, we are planning to increase our showroom footprint from our current Berkshire showroom to further showrooms across the country.

New weave

A new collection of cane furniture comes from Indian designer Vikram Goyal

Cane furniture has been a strong trend for several seasons – and now a new designer from India is putting a fresh stamp on the style. Cane is a timeless, sustainable material that continues to captivate contemporary designers with its eco-conscious appeal. Sourced from the outer bark of the fast-growing rattan vine, native to tropical regions like Southeast Asia, cane combines beauty with durability, offering a lightweight yet remarkably strong solution for furniture-making. Its rapid regeneration and minimal processing make it a low-impact, renewable resource.

New Delhi-based designer Vikram Goyal’s cane collection is inspired by centuries-old weaving traditions and rooted in sustainability, breathing new life into the time-honoured craft. He says: “I wanted to take an ancient craft and reinterpret it for today’s homes. It’s about finding poetry in materials, rhythm in form, and creating objects that carry both cultural memory and modern relevance.”

Viya’s design philosophy draws inspiration from Indian history, myths, and fables. With a rich heritage and a future-facing relevance, cane remains a powerful symbol of craft, sustainability, and enduring style.Dating back to the 7th century in India, cane weaving is a celebration of both artistry and nature. Strips of rattan cane are soaked, softened, and handwoven into fluid forms — light, strong, and imbued with timeless elegance. The Viya Cane Collection honours this legacy while reimagining it through a modern, designforward lens.

COLLECTION HIGHLIGHTS

Majuli Brass and deftly woven cane come together in sinuous forms and include a range of trolleys and lamps inspired by the river island of Majuli in Assam. The flowing forms echo the rhythm of rivers and the craftsmanship of the region.

Chakra Collection Chakra features sofas, chairs, stools consoles, and mirrors in natural and black cane. Skilfully woven and knotted into ethereal creations and inspired by the energy points of the body, each piece is circular, balanced, and sculptural — evoking harmony in design and spirit.

Assam Brass & Cane Trolley A refined blend of gleaming forged brass and intricately woven cane from Northeast India. This piece highlights Viya’s signature fusion of functionality and sophistication.

Barware Collection Named after the craft-rich states of North East India, Mizoram, Manipur, and Nagaland, these ice and champagne buckets showcase hand-beaten brass meeting robust cane in a seamless blend of tradition and style.

Garden furniture trends: a look at style, function, and sustainability

SUSTAINABILITY AND ECO-CONSCIOUS CHOICES

With a rising awareness of environmental issues, many people are choosing furniture made from eco-friendly materials such as recycled wood, bamboo, and sustainable metals. Companies are also moving towards materials that are durable and weather-resistant, ensuring that their products have longevity, reducing the need for constant replacements.

Timber furniture, often reclaimed or responsibly sourced, has become a statement of not only style, but also a commitment to ethical consumption. Similarly, woven outdoor seating crafted from recycled plastics and eco-friendly textiles is gaining popularity, providing both comfort and a reduced environmental footprint. Many people are opting for upcycled designs that tell a story of regeneration rather than waste.

The concept of sustainability also extends to the circular economy. Many garden furniture brands are taking steps to create products that are repairable and recyclable. As the capital becomes more eco-conscious, London’s garden spaces refl ect a sense of envi-

ronmental responsibility, where beauty and sustainability go hand in hand.

BOLD AND ECLECTIC DESIGNS

While minimalist Scandinavian-inspired garden furniture has had its moment, 2025 is seeing a resurgence of bold, eclectic designs that mix vibrant colours, textures, and patterns. Playful, statement pieces include brightly coloured furniture sets, neon cushions and geometric shapes, transforming gardens into dynamic extensions of the interior.

Garden furniture has become an extension of home décor, and lots of highend pieces blur the lines between the two. Think plush outdoor sofas adorned with velvet cushions or wicker lounges paired with rich, deep tones of green and gold. We are rethinking the boundaries of outdoor space, turning gardens into a continuation of our personal style. Another facet of this boldness is the use of multi-functional furniture that encourages a more fl uid use of space. Multi-tiered planters, modular seating arrangements, and foldable tables that can shift between casual and formal settings allow for fl exible outdoor living.

MANY GARDEN FURNITURE BRANDS ARE CREATING PRODUCTS THAT ARE REPAIRABLE AND RECYCLABLE

SMART

AND TECHNOLOGICAL INNOVATIONS

Gardens are becoming increasingly hightech. Whether it’s through built-in solar panels, Bluetooth speakers, or self-watering planters, the integration of technology in garden furniture is an undeniable trend. Smart garden lighting is one of the most popular tech-forward additions, with outdoor lights that can be controlled via smartphone apps or voice assistants. Additionally, many outdoor heating solutions, such as sleek fi repits or eco-friendly outdoor heaters, are designed with built-in smart thermostats for maximum comfort.

THE RISE OF MULTI-PURPOSE FURNITURE

Benches that double as storage, coffee tables with built-in fi re pits, and foldable chairs that can be tucked away when not in use are all gaining traction. These functional pieces allow residents to maximise their outdoor spaces while still maintaining an air of elegance. Our love for practicality and multi-functionality in design has bled into our gardens, ensuring that each piece of furniture has a clear purpose.

NATURAL MATERIALS AND TEXTURES

Rattan, teak, and stone have become ubiquitous in outdoor spaces, evoking a rustic, earthy vibe that feels at one with nature.

SMART

GARDEN LIGHTING IS

ONE OF THE MOST POPULAR TECH-FORWARD

ADDITIONS

The trend towards natural materials isn’t just about aesthetics – it’s about fostering a connection with the environment, allowing the furniture to age gracefully and blend into the garden landscape.

OUTDOOR DINING: A LIFESTYLE CHOICE

The demand for stylish yet functional dining sets is growing. Dining tables with extendable leaves, comfortable

armchairs, and built-in seating arrangements make outdoor dining an experience in itself. From chic bistro sets to large, family-style tables, dining al fresco has become an integral part of our outdoor culture. With the unpredictable British weather, these dining sets are designed with durability and practicality in mind, often featuring weather-resistant cushions, rust-proof frames, and weather-tight finishes.

stoneCIRCLE’s guide to using stone in your home

teve Vanhinsbergh, director of stoneCIRCLE, talks us through the different types of stone, how best to use them and the areas of the home best suited for each type.

A NATURALLY STUNNING KITCHEN

Whether natural or man-made, stone worktops combining practicality and good looks. The latest trends are for extra-large islands with seating areas combined, often in two contrasting stones, making a design statement as well as a practical area for family life and entertaining.

Granite is an excellent choice for kitchen worktops – its durable good looks vary from show-stopping figured granites to more subtle speckled types. Granite can withstand acidic spills and strong cleaning products, as well as the wear and tear of time.

Quartz is a man-made stone with more regular patterning, perfectly capturing the combination of stylishness and practicality that a modern kitchen requires.

The other man-made option is sintered stone. Brands such as Dekton are exceptionally resistant to UV light, frost and abrasion, making them ideal for kitchen surfaces. Add a granite or limestone floor for the finishing touch.

A SENSUOUS BATHROOM HAVEN

Naturally waterproof, stone lends itself to bathroom use. Marble is a classic choice for vanity tops, walls and floors. It can be as eyecatching or as subtle as you want, as marble is available in a wide range of colours; from soft creams and beiges, via vibrant greens and reds, to wonderfully contrasting white and black shades. Use a light coloured marble with a soft vein to create a calming haven, or opt for heavily veined book matched marble slabs and transform the walls and floors into works of art.

Onyx, a beautifully translucent natural stone, is perfect for creating an eye-catching vanity top or basin.

LUXURIOUS LIVING SPACES

Stone flooring is a practical, durable choice that can be used throughout living spaces and continued up the staircase. Limestone or travertine creates a traditional homely feel, whereas polished marble makes the house feel much grander, especially when different colours are inlaid creating intricate patterns.

Stone fireplaces make for a striking feature wall in your living space. Limestone and marble are popular: pick one with fossil inclusions for a beautiful statement piece. The list goes on – tabletops, bars, bookcases, swimming pools, statues can all be made in stone. stoneCIRCLE has been fabricating stone for interiors since 1968, working with top architects and interior designers. They have their own teams of installers working across the south of England fitting the stone they fabricate.

Since 2004, Oltco has been transforming outdoor spaces with high-quality resin bound surfaces. This innovative solution has become a top choice for homeowners and businesses, offering a seamless, durable, and stylish alternative to traditional driveways, patios, and pathways.

One of the key benefits of resin bound surfaces is their permeability. Unlike concrete or block paving, resin bound allows water to drain naturally, helping to prevent puddles and reducing flood risks. This makes it a Sustainable Urban Drainage System (SuDS) compliant option, ideal for both residential and commercial properties. Additionally, resin bound surfaces require minimal maintenance – there are no loose stones, weeds struggle to grow, and the surface remains in excellent condition for years with just occasional cleaning.

Built TO LAST

Resin bound: the smart choice for long-lasting, sustainable driveways

Resin bound surfaces are built to withstand heavy use and harsh weather conditions without cracking or fading. The smooth, non-slip finish also enhances safety, making it a practical choice for driveways, pathways, and even large-scale commercial projects. Available in a variety of colours and stone blends, resin bound can be customised to complement any property’s aesthetic.

In 2019, Oltco introduced Recycle Bound, a pioneering solution that incorporates recycled plastic waste into resin bound surfaces. This innovative product has helped

One of the key benefits of resin bound surfaces is their permeability

recycle the equivalent of over 800 million plastic straws, offering an eco-friendly option without compromising durability. Each square metre of Recycle Bound contains the equivalent of 3,000 plastic straws, turning waste into a valuable resource.

While Recycle Bound is popular for residential properties, it has also been installed in high-profile commercial spaces, including hotels and attractions. With plastic pollution continuing to be a global challenge, Oltco’s Recycle Bound provides a practical and sustainable solution.

Oltco stands by its commitment to quality with an industry-leading guarantee of up to 20 years. Whether you choose traditional resin bound or the eco-friendly Recycle Bound, you’re investing in a driveway that is built to last.

“AHM were professional, efficient and understanding all the way”
Mrs Marion-Russell, November 2024

Meet the expert

Louise Hazell, of Lightfoots Solicitors, on taking the stress out of moving and a warm welcome in Marlow

Q How long have you been at Lightfoots Solicitors?

A I joined Lightfoots in 2020 as a Senior Conveyancer and shortly thereafter was given the opportunity to lead our Princes Risborough office, which I eagerly accepted. In May last year I was promoted to Partner and Head of Residential Conveyancing, a role that I had worked very hard for and am incredibly proud to hold.

Q How would you describe your conveyancing style?

A My conveyancing style is very clientfocused. I understand how stressful and overwhelming the process of moving house can be, so I aim to guide clients through it with clarity, empathy, and reassurance. I take pride in being approachable and solution-oriented. Problem-solving is a key part of what I do, and I always strive to resolve issues with common sense and a calm, pragmatic approach. I genuinely love what I do, and I hope that comes through in the service I provide and the relation-

ships I build with my clients. The feedback I receive from clients often reflects this, which is incredibly rewarding and reinforces why I care so much about delivering a supportive and personal experience.

Q What is your vision for the conveyancing services at Lightfoots?

A My vision for conveyancing at Lightfoots is to continue building a strong, dynamic team, both in our established offices and in our newest office in Marlow, Buckinghamshire, which we opened in June last year. I’m passionate about combining personal service with modern efficiency. As technology, particularly AI, becomes increasingly integrated into our daily lives, it’s vital that we stay ahead of the curve rather than get left behind. The conveyancing process has long been considered outdated, but I’m excited by the advancements already underway that are helping to streamline the experience, making it faster, more efficient, and far less stressful for both clients and conveyancers.

Q What excites you about the coming year?

A I’m really excited about continuing to build strong relationships in Marlow. Our newest office only opened in July 2024, but the support we’ve received from the local community has been incredible, and it’s been so rewarding to see us already becoming part of the town. What excites me most, though, is watching my team grow and develop in their roles. I genuinely love being part of their journey. Motivation and positivity are key in this line of work, and I do my best to bring that energy to the team every day.

MEET THEHEADS

Absolutely heads to the Berkhamsted Schools Group to meet a trio leading the educational way

berkhamsted.com

NICK CALE

HEAD OF SIXTH

Q How has the school year gone for you so far?

A It has been an incredible year to begin my headship, marked by the much-anticipated opening of our new Sixth Form centre – the Zaha Hadid Building. It’s a truly transformational space, designed to equip our students for the next stage of their journey beyond Berkhamsted.

Q Why were you originally attracted to the Head of Sixth role?

A This role has always appealed to me for its blend of academic challenge and pastoral care, supporting students at a pivotal point in their educational journey. It’s a unique role in many ways – one that o ers the privilege of witnessing young people make significant life decisions and then commit to them with impressive maturity in a short space of time.

Q What does Berkhamsted o er that makes your Sixth Form provision stand out?

A Two things that make Berkhamsted Sixth such a

“It is a pivotal point for our students”

special place are the breadth of opportunities and the strength of its community. Whether your interests lie in academic societies, the arts, outdoor education, or sport, there is something here for everyone. But what truly sets it apart is the sense of community – a supportive environment in which everyone can achieve their potential and be themselves.

Q What are students prepared for once they leave you?

A Students leave Berkhamsted Sixth as confident, capable individuals, ready to make a di erence, be that through the traditional university pathway or the growing route of degree apprenticeships. During their time here, they embrace school life, find their voice, and grow both academically and personally, emerging ready to contribute to the world beyond the walls of Berkhamsted.

TOM HOCKEDY

Q It’s very early days in terms of your role as Head of Boys at Berkhamsted. But how have you settled in?

A I have thoroughly enjoyed my welcome back to Castle Campus and Berkhamsted Boys. Having been at the school for over 10 years and having had the opportunity to work in all three of our senior schools, it is lovely to come back to the Boys’ School where it all started for me. I have been most impressed by the boys and their drive to do well for themselves. There is still a lot to look forward to as our plans begin to evolve, and as we build and develop our o ering so we can continue to allow the boys to thrive and flourish beyond their GCSEs. I am excited for what the future holds.

Q What attracted you to the position?

A I have always wanted to be a Headteacher, and having worked in a number of schools, what is most impressive about Berkhamsted is its drive to

do the right thing for all the pupils in our care. There is a genuine desire to enable pupils to do well for themselves and for them to develop as well-rounded individuals where they can develop their own individual talents.

Q What kind of Headteacher are you?

A Firm, fair, kind and supportive are some of the adjectives I would hope people would use to describe me. People know I have high standards, but this is balanced with wanting pupils to have fun. I want them to enjoy school, while being provided with a firm foundation for both challenge and success.

Q What are you looking forward to over the next couple of months?

A I am looking forward to getting to know all of the pupils and learning about the pupil experience from their perspective as well as meeting with parents. I am a strong believer in us all working together, which is fostered by developing strong relationships.

JO VILA

HEAD OF GIRLS

Q How excited are you about taking over as Head of Girls at Berkhamsted later this year?

A I am absolutely thrilled to take on this role, especially as Berkhamsted Girls’ School holds such a special place in my heart. My time as a pupil here was incredibly formative, and I will always be grateful for the unwavering support, the dedication of the sta , and the countless opportunities that helped shape my journey. Returning to a school with such a forward thinking and ambitious community – one whose values so closely reflect my own – is truly an honour.

Q Why were you keen on the role?

A Berkhamsted is a school that never stands still. It is constantly evolving, always striving to improve and focusing on unlocking each pupil’s potential. I strongly believe in the power of self-discovery, character development, and the importance of using one’s voice to make a positive impact. Whether through academic excellence, pastoral

care, or co-curricular experiences, Berkhamsted empowers its pupils to succeed and grow into confident, resilient young women.

Q What kind of Headteacher can we expect when you start?

A I will be pupil-centred, energetic, and involved in every aspect of school life. I’ll be visible and approachable, ensuring both students and sta feel heard and valued. Listening will be at the core of my leadership – whether it’s understanding concerns, celebrating successes, or shaping the future of the school.

Q What else are you looking forward to?

A Learning should be engaging and fun, and I look forward to bringing enthusiasm and vibrancy to my leadership. I won’t just observe; I’ll actively participate, getting stuck into school life and truly understanding the pupil journey from all angles. My goal is to foster an environment where students feel supported, inspired, and excited to learn every day – where pupils come first, energy drives progress, and leadership is as dynamic as the students it serves.

We are thrilled to share the results of our recent Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) Inspection, which highlighted our school’s exceptional commitment to innovation and digital learning. The inspection report was overwhelmingly positive, with particular praise given to our forward-thinking approach to technology. We are especially proud to be awarded a significant strength in this area.

The inspection team recognised our school as a dynamic environment where innovation thrives. In particular, they praised the strategic integration of technology across the curriculum and co-curricular life, noting its tangible impact on pupil engagement, learning, and skill development.

At the heart of this achievement is our specialised digital fundamentals curriculum, which equips our children with essential digital literacy skills from an early age. This structured programme ensures pupils

not only understand technology, but can also use it confidently and responsibly across subjects and in real-life scenarios.

The school’s unique broadcasting programme and cutting-edge broadcasting studio are a hub of creativity and technical proficiency. Pupils plan, produce and present a range of audio-visual content, honing their communication, editing, and production talents in a professional-style setting. Children are given the responsibility to live-stream over 50 school events each year, making split-second decisions and putting their problem-solving skills to the test. The programme fosters teamwork and boosts confidence, all while immersing students in real-world media skills.

Our music technology programme was also highlighted as a prime example of how we harness digital tools. From composition software to recording lyrics in our state-of-the-art recording studio, students are encouraged to explore new sonic landscapes and develop practical skills relevant to modern music production.

Upton House School:

Another standout initiative we have just introduced is our popular Drone Legends club. This comprehensive curriculum supports future UAV operators, drone engineers and software engineers. It also complements many other areas of interest, from environmental monitoring, agricultural, aviation and aerial cinematography. This cross-curricular subject involves many STEM elements, as well as coding, applied maths concepts, digital skills and critical problem-solving. It is a true example of engaging children with technology.

We are immensely proud of our significant strength, which reflects the collaborative e ort of teachers and children. Our goal has always been to prepare young people for a rapidly evolving digital world, and this inspection has rea rmed our belief that by nurturing curiosity and creativity, we are empowering our children to shape the future – one idea at a time.

LIVES

Boarding in the modern world: a fresh perspective at Lockers Park

At Lockers Park, the Boarding House has undergone a dynamic transformation since 2021 under the leadership of our dedicated House Parents, Mr and Mrs Newman. Their mission was twofold: to reinvigorate the Boarding House for current pupils and to encourage a wider range of boys to experience the many benefits of boarding life.

Crucial to their success was a thorough data-driven approach. Mr and Mrs Newman undertook extensive research to identify the elements that contribute to a successful and supportive boarding environment. This work informed the introduction of the Boarding Pathway, a bespoke programme designed to help boys build independence, resilience, and life skills. The Pathway also o ers an accessible and exciting introduction to boarding for Flexi and non-boarders.

A key feature of this new approach is the Boarding Passport, which sets out seven developmental targets for each year group. These carefully structured goals – such as leading a boarding meeting or organising an event for younger pupils – encourage personal growth, leadership and community spirit. Pupils who complete all their targets are rewarded with an invitation to the annual Boarding Bonanza, a much-anticipated celebration of their achievements.

The Boarding House culture has also been rejuvenated through a vibrant events programme. Creative and inclusive activities like House of Hogwarts, cooking competitions, treasure hunts, The Battle of the Boys, and seasonal themed nights have helped to generate enthusiasm and a real sense of camaraderie. Participation is strong, not only among boarders but across the entire school community.

In line with their commitment to fostering a nurturing and focused environment, Mr and Mrs Newman have introduced a smartphone-free policy within the Boarding House. This initiative encourages boys to engage more deeply with each other and participate wholeheartedly in the diverse range of activities available.

The impact of these initiatives is clear. Mr and Mrs Newman were delighted to exceed Lockers Park’s boarding targets, with 82% of pupils having boarded at least once within their first term – a powerful testament to the welcoming, engaging environment they have created. Feedback from parents has been overwhelmingly positive.

As we look to the future, boarding at Lockers Park will continue to evolve. With a commitment to innovation and a deep understanding of the modern child, our Boarding House is not only keeping pace with the times – it is setting the standard for what boarding in the modern world can and should be.

SKILLS for LIFE

St George’s School Windsor Castle highlights the benefits of prep

school boarding

On page 107, the Boarding Schools Association talk in detail about National Boarding Week, an initiative taking place in June aiming to showcase the positive and lasting impact boarding can have on students’ lives. As the only fully co-ed prep school in the Royal Borough to o er both day and boarding, St George’s School Windsor Castle has a unique vantage point from which to witness the transformational experience it provides.

TEACHING KEY SKILLS

With beds available to children at St George’s from age 8, boarding o ers a

head start on developing key life skills, from helping children to master simple practical tasks such as making their bed and managing personal care, to self-su ciency in time management, collaboration and conflict resolution. Within a safe, secure and nurturing environment, children develop independence and a sense of responsibility, both for themselves and towards their wider community.

BRANCHING OUT

As the school day finishes, boarding life is only just beginning. In addition to time for completing homework and enjoying a freshly cooked meal, students have access to a wide range of activities, many of which are unique to the boarding environment. From extended time in the school pool or

on the playing fields, to baking, crafting and team games, boarders have the opportunity to pursue both their own passions and interests, as well as those of others.

BROADENING HORIZONS

When it comes to choosing a senior school, there are many options to consider, day or boarding being one. Of the 1,411 Independent Schools Council member schools, 438 o er boarding, some exclusively with no day places. Being open to boarding during the senior years therefore significantly increases choice, opening the door to schools which may be further from home, but otherwise provide the ethos or specialism ideal for that child. A prep school is the ideal opportunity to trial boarding prior to making the choice. While many children thrive in a boarding environment right from day one, at schools like St George’s, there is also the option to gently transition to life as a senior boarder through ad hoc nights, progressing to regular flexi and then full weeks away from home.

AIDING MODERN LIVING

Families today are increasingly stretched. Due to work and other commitments, sometimes the extended school day isn’t enough. With flexi nights costing less than £70, a ‘sleepover with friends’ safe in the knowledge that homework will be completed in addition to having fun, a night in the boarding house often provides better value than a babysitter!

Wellbeing Workshops

Equipping children to identify, prevent and combat mental ill health is a core part of St George’s School Windsor Castle’s award-winning approach to education. It therefore comes as no surprise that the school is back once again at this year’s Royal Windsor Flower Show, bringing mindful cra s and music to the show’s youngest guests. Hosting its hugely popular Wellbeing Tipi for a second year running, the school’s Head of Mental Health will be leading workshops throughout the day designed to help children to relax. In addition to cra s such as beading and sticker art, drawing inspiration from the show’s theme of

Patterns in Nature, sessions will include steel tongue drumming. The resonant tones created by the drums promote emotional wellbeing, in addition to being incredibly simple, fun instruments to play! Also back is the tipi’s cosy corner with books, cuddly toys and nature-inspired colouring sheets. stgwindsor.org

HEART of BUCKS

Absolutely joins the second leg of a 25th anniversary tour to witness the help the charity o ers to local communities

Grants awarded by Heart of Bucks help a variety of organisations with a wide range of projects. From foodbanks and homeless charities where the impact on individuals is clear, to the more unusual where the e ect is more subtle but no less powerful, as the second leg of their 25th anniversary tour highlighted.

Heart of Bucks sta , trustees and committee members were joined by the newly appointed High Sheri of Buckinghamshire Pippa Kirkbride on Wednesday 23rd April to visit charities and community groups in Amersham and Chesham. The day included stops at a host of places that have benefited from the charity’s work.

Scannappeal at Amersham Hospital received funding for, amongst other things, a contactless donation station and technology to upgrade their till to take contactless payments. Funded during Covid, this allowed the charity to continue selling books and other items from their hospital shop safely to raise funds for life changing medical equipment.

Chesham Youth Centre received a Voluntary Sector Resilience Fund grant towards core costs following the pandemic. This grant allowed the centre to continue providing youth services as well as maintaining the centre for use by other community organisations too.

Chesham Town Council also received funding from Heart of Bucks for two projects to support the community.

Bois Moor Road Playground, which was damaged by a falling tree during storm Eunice, received a grant to help rebuild the playground, keeping it open as a meeting place for local school children and providing

a safe play space for families in the area with no garden. And The Sluice Gate on Moor Park Road, which was put in place to prevent flooding that caused thousands of pounds of damage and huge disruption to residents and businesses. The new gate has prevented any more flooding and benefitted an estimated 30,000 people.

Heart of Bucks is a community foundation that raises funds across Buckinghamshire and distributes money directly to local causes. Heart of Bucks operate to ensure any form of philanthropy, whether from an individual or an organisation, is e ective and brings the greatest benefit to those in need across Buckinghamshire. Since Heart of Bucks was established in 2000, the charity has awarded over £18.5m to local causes and are proud to be one of 47 members of UK Community Foundations.
