A quiet August for Ashley Rudd ? It is anything but
August always feels like a golden pause, that stretch of summer when the days are still long, the evenings are warm enough to sit outside until late, and this month is all about soaking up the last lazy days before autumn starts.
First on the agenda: a very special milestone indeed. Iím marking my Nanís 80th this month, and I couldnít think of a more perfect way to celebrate than with afternoon tea at Thornton Hall Hotel. Thereís something timeless about afternoon tea, delicate finger sandwiches, warm scones
piled high with jam and clotted cream and Thornton Hall is one of those places that feels right for an occasion. And no birthday celebration is complete without cake, so weíll be picking up something delicious from Devonshire Bakery in Frodsham.
After all that celebrating, Iíll be more than ready for some downtime, and thereís nothing better than curling up with something good on TV when you want to recharge. Iíve been counting down the days to the release of The Thursday Murder Club on Netflix, 28th August. If you havenít read the books, youíre in for a treat; thereís nothing better than a good murder mystery and a classic ìwho dunnitî. Richard Osmanís cosy crime series is full of charm, wit and twisty plots. The cast looks brilliant, featuring Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan, Ben Kingsley, and Celia Imrie.
With it being summer, Iím also trying to keep my energy levels up and bloating at bay, so Iíve jumped on the viral TikTok protein co ee trend. Iíve been making mine with a double espresso from my Nespresso pods and a scoop of Nourishing Protein in Vanilla from WelleCo, all frothed up with coconut milk. It tastes like an iced treat but keeps me going through busy mornings.
So, thatís my August: a month of raising a glass with loved ones, recharging and eating a slice of leftover birthday cake.
This month I amÖ

Entrepreneur Ashley Stobart on looks when young, launching a beauty business with a di erence and getting away from it all in Knutsford
It feels like whatever Ashley Stobart turns her hand to, it gets noticed. Whether thatís her first foray on social media where she shared her experiences of cosmetic procedures in a honest and open way; hosting her podcast with friend Lauren Adamson, a show that delves into topics ranging from cosmetic surgery to motherhood, relationships, and personal anecdotes; to founding The Cosmetic Consultant, with her debut product, Miracle Skin Transformation, already gaining viral traction. Sheís certainly not afraid to put herself under the glare of the public eye.
ìWhatever you do, someoneís going to have an opinion,î she says matter of factly. ìThatís part and parcel of being in the public eye. But honestly, the positivity Iíve received far outweighs the negativity. Iím incredibly lucky to have built such a loyal, engaged community through my own social
channels, our Patreon, and the Nip Tuck podcast.î Have experts in the cosmetic industry also responded to her content?
ìYes and in a positive way. Iíve also since made so many amazing connections through brand partnerships, events and panels. Iíve had the chance to meet brilliant people and respected experts across the industry.î
Growing up in Bowden ìItís a really special place to me and still very much feels like home,î she says Ashleyís interest in all things cosmetics started early. ìI became aware of how I looked at a relatively young age probably around 12 or 13, when I first started using skincare and dabbling in basic makeup,î she recalls. ìIt was a di erent time though; social media didnít exist, so the pressure to meet unrealistic beauty standards wasnít what it is today. Back then, there were very limited skincare options for young people. My mum introduced me to Clarins which,
at the time, was one of the few brands with gentle products suitable for teenage skin. Now there are brands like Glow Hub, Byoma and Bubble that are specifically designed for young, sensitive skin.î
Her first cosmetic procedure followed a few years later. ìI had my first lip filler at 18 and looking back, I now feel that was too young,î she says. ìI wouldnít recommend anyone to make changes to their face that early. Thereís a lot of pressure today, and while I was always confident and fascinated by beauty, I do wish Iíd waited. Iíve since had issues due to rushing into treatments and want to use my platform to raise awareness around this. Some aesthetic procedures can be irreversible, so itís vital people do their research.î
Itís this openness that has endeared Ashley to the online world. ìGenuine, informative, and real,î she says on how she wants to come across. ìIím incredibly honest
ìI want to come across as genuine, informative and realî
probably too honest sometimes but Iíd rather that than promote unattainable beauty standards. I just donít see the point in pretending somethingís real when itís not. If I can help someone feel more informed or less alone, itís worth it.î
It was only a matter of time before a podcast came calling. ìDuring Covid, I became obsessed with podcasts they were a real source of comfort and entertainment,î Ashley explains. ìIt was actually my husband who suggested that my best friend, Lauren Adamson, and I start one. We connected with a producer and went for it. Nip Tuck hit number two on the UK charts the day it launched we couldnít believe it. Weíve known each other for over 15 years we used to work together. Weíre very di!erent in some ways, but we just get each other. That chemistry and banter comes across so naturally on the podcast, and I think thatís what resonates with people.î
Perhaps, because of her deep interest in the subject, it was inevitable that Ashley would eventually start her own business in the beauty industry, The Cosmetic Consultant, which recently launched its debut product, Miracle Skin Transformation. ìFour years,î she says on how long she worked on the product concept. ìThe idea first came to me in 2020, during lockdown. Like many people, I couldnít access my usual facials and
ìIf I can help someone feel more informed or less alone, it©s worth itî
thatís really what sparked the concept. I found myself wondering: how can I recreate that post≠facial glow at home?
ìI spent three years researching formulations, emerging skincare innovations, and ingredient synergies, followed by over a year in product development to perfect it,î Ashley continues. ìItís been a real labour of love, and seeing the impact itís having on peopleís skin makes every moment worth it. From the start, I was committed to developing a formula that delivered high performance results while remaining gentle enough for a wide range of skin types. What I wanted was something e!ective, gentle, and accessible a product that delivers visible results after just one use, without compromising skin barrier health. There are very few products that can confidently say that. This debut formula is the heart of our brand. It sets the tone for everything weíll create moving forward.î
The response has been incredibly positive. ìWeíve already received over 500 reviews since launching in October, from both men and women,î Ashley says. ìHearing how itís helped people feel confident enough to go makeup≠free or how itís improved their relationship with their skin thatís what itís all about for me.î
With so much going on, how does the business and podcast fit in with her home
life in Knutsford? ìItís definitely a juggle! But Iím lucky to work with a talented, flexible team some of whom are mums themselves so we all understand and respect each otherís boundaries. My family is hugely supportive too, which makes a big di!erence. While my kids are still young and remain my number one priority, every day is a chaotic balance between business and motherhood but I wouldnít have it any other way.î
Lucky, too, that Knutsford o!ers plenty to escape any stresses or strains. ìI love it here,î she smiles. ìSome of my favourite places to unwind are the gym at CPASE, Cryo Revive in Wilmslow, Modern Farmhouse, The Con Club in Altrincham, and Lookfantastic in Altrincham my go≠to beauty destination, and Iím so proud that Cosmetic Consult is now o cially stocked there!î
Looking to the future and itís clear we will be seeing a lot more of Ashley Stobart. ìBetween growing the brand, building and continuing the Nip Tuck podcast, I feel like Iím in a really creative, energised place. The next chapter is all about expansion new product development, new partnerships, and growing our community even further. Iíve got so much more I want to do and Iím just getting started.î

Knutsford is a charming and a uent market town that o ers a delightful mix of historical depth, scenic beauty, and modern≠day vibrancy. Its cobbled streets, elegant Georgian architecture, and independent shops are as inviting as its storied past, which stretches back over a thousand years. A haven for families, history bu s, and food lovers alike, Knutsford manages to blend small≠town warmth with cosmopolitan touches, making it one of the gems of North West England. Today, Knutsford o ers a quintessentially English experience wrapped in layers of history and a uence. Walking through the town centre, youíre met with beautifully preserved Georgian faÁades, boutique shops, and a refined yet welcoming atmosphere. The town is particularly vibrant on market days, when local traders set up stalls selling everything from organic produce to handmade crafts.
One of the townís most striking features is King Street, a narrow and winding road lined with independent shops, cafÈs, galleries, and restaurants. Alongside it runs Princess Street, which houses even more local businesses and eateries. Together, these two streets form the commercial heart of Knutsford, filled with energy but never chaotic.
Knutsford also prides itself on its strong sense of community. Regular events, from artisan markets to food festivals, bring people together in celebration of local culture. The annual Royal May Day parade, a tradition that has been running since 1864, is particularly beloved. It features flower≠covered floats, dancing, and a procession through the town.
Among Knutsfordís many charms is the sheer variety of things to see and do. Whether youíre a lover of nature, history, or art, there is something here to suit every taste.
Ashley Stobart is a big fan of the market townand here are many reasons why
Tatton Park is undoubtedly the crown jewel of Knutsford. This vast estate encompasses over 1,000 acres of parkland, a grand neo≠classical mansion, beautifully maintained gardens, and a working farm.
Tatton Park o ers year≠round events, including food festivals, classic car shows, and Christmas markets. Children adore the rare breed animals at the farm, while adults can explore the houseís opulent interiors and the picturesque Japanese Garden. Another must≠visit is Knutsford Heritage Centre, located in a 17th≠century timber≠ framed building on King Street. The centre provides an immersive look into the townís past, featuring exhibits on local traditions, Victorian life, and of course, Elizabeth Gaskell. The centre is also home to the impressive Knutsford Millennium Tapestry, a community project that took four years to complete and showcases the townís history through intricate needlework.
For a dose of the outdoors, The Moor is a lovely green space just south of the town centre. Itís particularly popular
with families and dog walkers. The path beside the River Lily makes for a tranquil stroll, and the playground and open lawns are perfect for picnics.
Knutsford is exceptionally family≠friendly, with plenty of activities and spaces that cater to both young children and teenagers. The highlight for most visiting families is Tatton Park Farm, where children can meet pigs, donkeys, goats, and chickens, ride tractors, and take part in seasonal trails and workshops. Itís educational and entertaining in equal measure.
The townís Legh Road Conservation Area, a peaceful residential area lined with
stately Victorian villas and mature trees, makes for a pleasant and safe walk with kids. Itís an ideal route for a quiet family stroll away from tra c, o ering glimpses into Knutsfordís 19th≠century prosperity.
During school holidays, many of the local churches and community centres o er kid≠friendly activities ranging from craft sessions to drama workshops. Egerton Youth Club on Mereheath Lane also hosts events for older children and teens.
The nearby Gauntlet Birds of Prey Eagle and Vulture Park adds another layer of adventure for families. Just a ten≠minute drive from the town centre, the park o ers flying displays, falconry courses, and the chance to see over 120 birds of prey in action.
Knutsfordís dining scene punches well above its weight, with a mix of elegant restaurants, cosy gastropubs, and inviting cafÈs. Whether youíre after fine dining or a quick bite with family, thereís no shortage of options.
For contemporary British cuisine with a focus on local produce, Evuna o ers Spanish tapas and fine wines in an upscale but relaxed setting. If youíre craving something Italian, Giovanniís is a long≠established favourite that serves generous portions of pasta, pizza, and seafood, perfect for family dinners. And, of course, there is Linden Stores, featured in Absolutely last month and a location that continues to attract foodie aficionados in their droves.
CafÈ culture is strong in Knutsford, and The Courtyard Co ee House is a gem hidden just o King Street. With home≠baked cakes, hearty breakfasts, and excellent co ee, itís a great stop for a leisurely morning. Similarly, Rose & Crown, a gastropub in the centre of town, o ers a warm setting with traditional pub food elevated to restaurant standards.
Knutsfordís appeal lies in its perfect balancing act: a place steeped in history yet alive with contemporary flair. It retains its market≠town roots while embracing modernity through independent retail, high≠quality food, and a strong community spirit. Visitors find that a day is rarely enough to take in everything and many end up returning again and again.
The Gold & Silver Roadshow events head to Cheshire this month, an opportunity to cash in on a host of vintage objects
There will be four separate Gold & Silver Roadshows across Cheshire over the next two months, with special one≠day events being held at: The George & Dragon Restaurant, Altrincham Premier Inn Hotel, Manchester Road, WA14 1HU on 18th August and 22nd September; and Royal Oak Pub & Premier Inn Hotel, High Street, Bromborough, Wirral, CH62 7EX on 23rd August and 27th September
What can you expect at these events?
A Jewellery & Coin Roadshow will be held at the Bromborough Royal Oak. A very lucky couple called at one of their recent roadshow events with a couple of old gold chains and a silver charm bracelet and a bag of old silver coins. They were paid over £1,600 just for the coins alone. They turned out to be pre 1947 silver coins that were normal currency a few years ago and are now highly collected. Like most people, who can only dream of winning the pools or the lottery, a lot of normal
households have a hidden treasure of old gold jewellery, silver jewellery, teapots, trophies, trays and old objets díart. Why not get a free valuation from an expert at one of the roadshows?
There is no queuing and their experts will give you a one on one appraisal of the value of your treasured possessions in a private area, where there are no prying eyes, watching the process evolve. If you like the valuation, their expert will make you the same o er in cash which you can accept or decline at no cost to yourself.
Anything can be an unearthed treasure. Any old British or foreign coins. Any old wrist watches or pocket watches. All chains, bracelets, rings and bangles broken or not and in any
condition. If you think it is a diamond ring, bring it along and they will confirm it to be genuine. If you have an old trophy or tankard or any silver coloured items, let them value them for you. Old war medals and old Masonic medals can be very valuable. You will be surprised to hear that they have paid thousands of pounds for certain war medals and even the General Service Medal group is worth bringing especially if you have the original box. Also of great interest are old military uniforms, tunics, hats and any army, navy or RAF field gear. There are rarely any queues at the events and they can normally o er a valuation within a few minutes. They will give you a free valuation on which they back up with a cash o er, there and then. Get looking now in your old drawers, cupboards, and jewellery boxes. Look in the loft and the cellar, even old broken or squashed items of jewellery and silver are valuable. Of particular interest are gold and silver cigarette cases, Vesta Cases, thimbles, candlesticks, trays and all things silver are needed. Pocket watches in gold and silver and all wristwatches by: Rolex, Cartier, Omega, Longine, IWC are particularly in demand.

As Manchesterís iconic Kimpton Clocktower celebrates its 130th anniversary, Absolutely looks back on a storied past and an exciting future
In 1895, a bold new building was completed on Oxford Street: the headquarters of Refuge Assurance. With its intricate terracotta faÁade and towering clock, it quickly became one of Manchesterís most iconic landmarks.
The structure was designed in an ornate ìeclectic Baroqueî or French Renaissanceñinspired style by Alfred
Waterhouse also famed for designing the Natural History Museum in London. Construction began in 1891, and the first phase comprising the red brick and terracotta block at the Oxfordñ Whitworth corner was completed in 1895. This phase featured lush interiors decorated with Burmantofts glazed bricks and faience tiles, and a grand
open≠plan hall for sta . Employees nearly 2,000 strong had separate dining areas by gender, and their basement hall doubled as a lunchtime dance floor.
From 1910 to 1912, Alfredís son, Paul Waterhouse, added the soaring 217≠ foot clock tower along Oxford Street, crowned with a four≠face clock circled by Manchesterís worker≠bee motif a signature of the city. A further extension along Whitworth Street, by Stanley Birkett in 1932, fully completed the ensemble.
For nearly a century, the building served as o ce space, until the Refuge Assurance Company relocated in November 1987 to Fulshaw Hall. Plans at the time including a pitch to house the HallÈ Orchestra fell through.
A £7 million conversion in 1996 by Richard Newman transformed it into the Palace Hotel (under Principal Hotels). This launched its long journey as Manchesterís premier hotel: rebranded as Le MÈridien Palace (2001), reverted to Palace (2004), then renamed The Principal Manchester in 2016. A striking glass dome in the lobby sourced from a Scottish railway station was a highlight of the hotel conversion.
In May 2018, InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) acquired the property. Plans were announced in February 2020 to relaunch it as part of IHGís boutique Kimpton brand, and after a brief COVID related closure, the Kimpton Clocktower Hotel o cially opened on 1st October 2020.
Kimpton Clocktower Hotel boasts 270 loft≠ style bedrooms, including 11 suites, all with double and triple height ceilings. Each room borrows design inspiration from the spirited and renowned Manchester party and music scene with vibrant, bespoke textiles designed by Timorous Beasties which incorporate the iconic Manchester worker bee, velvet furnishings and bold contemporary graphic prints adorning the walls.
Each room includes signature features all designed to provide the Kimpton welcome to guests from in≠room amenities such as yoga mats and umbrellas, tuck boxes with local treats and the Kimpton ëForgot It? Weíve Got Ití service which o ers bath and hygiene products, phone chargers and all other guest essentials.
Record players and vinyl records are also on o er within the rooms as Kimpton Clocktower Hotel provides a personalised music concierge service. The tailormade service allows guests to choose the perfect soundtrack to their stay from an eclectic mix of genres.
Kimpton Clocktower Hotel has a pet≠ friendly attitude, making all pets welcome alongside their human guest counterparts and o ering a selection of amenities such as food, water bowls and mats.
Kimpton Clocktower Hotel is home to the award≠winning Refuge Bar and Restaurant. The warm and welcoming space sources the best fresh ingredients from the North West, taking inspiration from around the globe to deliver innovative dishes served as small plates designed for sharing, alongside hearty mains and Sunday roasts.
From insurance HQ to revered boutique hotel, the Kimpton Clocktower stands as a dramatic testament to
Manchesterís architectural ambition, civic pride, and evolving hospitality landscape. Some 130 years later, that same building is now the Kimpton Clocktower Hotel, and this remarkable journey of architecture, community and unforgettable stories is being celebrated.
An immersive new exhibition, a heartfelt look back through Manchesterís history, took place in June, and a massive giveaway of 130 incredible prizes for loyal guests and followers has also begun. And the music we mentioned above? That has come very much to the fore with a new exhibition that opened in July.
Oasis Fans 1994≠1997 is set to show a series of never≠before≠seen photographs by renowned photographer Jon Shard, who opens the door to a world before online sales, dynamic pricing and frantically refreshing a website to get the hottest ticket in town.
The collection of photographs, co≠curated by the British Culture Archive, shows scenes of fans excitedly queuing up in the cold winter of 1996, hoping to get their hands on tickets for the bandís sold out shows at Manchester Cityís Maine Road stadium for as little as £17.50 per ticket.
Renowned for his visually distinctive work across a number of fields, this was Jonís first assignment for NME the iconic music bible that shaped generations of music journalism and culture.
Speaking fondly of life pre≠online ticket sales, Jon says: ìQueuing in person had its charm I felt privileged to capture the dedication of fans willing to stay out all night and brave the cold. Getting the ticket was an event itself, almost a rite of passage for fans.î Giving visitors a deeper insight into the sold≠out shows, as well as the magic of Oasis and their music, the exhibition will also feature a Fan Wonderwall with archive images spanning
from 1994≠97 from fans attending gigs, spanning from pre≠smart phone gig≠videos, through to their latest performances.
One Oasis fan featured in the exhibition, Leah Walker, who was successful in securing her ticket and attended one of the two sold≠out Maine Road stadium shows looked back: I was one of those kids who camped out at Maine Road to secure a ticket, and when the day of the gig finally came, it didnít disappoint. The area around the stadium, Rusholme and Moss Side was buzzing. Iím in my mid≠40s now, and we have never had anything like that in music since.
Keep your eyes peeled for more to come from Kimpton Clocktower, marking 130 years in existence in true style.

The conversation around health and wellbeing at work is more relevant than ever. Whether youíre managing stress, navigating menopause or coping with a long≠ term health condition, itís crucial to know your rights in the workplace and how to access support.
In the UK, employers have a legal duty of care to protect the health, safety, and wellbeing of their employees, including their mental health.
One of the cornerstones of this legal protection is the Equality Act 2010, which requires employers to make ìreasonable adjustmentsî for workers with disabilities including both physical and mental health conditions which have a long≠ term impact on your day≠to≠day life.
Mental health in particular is starting to be recognised as a major workplace issue. Anxiety, depression and burnout are
among the leading causes of work≠related absence, particularly in women. Employers have a legal duty to assess the risk of workplace stress, including conducting risk assessments where necessary, and are obligated to act if the safety and wellbeing of employees is compromised.
Menopause is also increasingly recognised as a workplace issue. Symptoms of menopause such as anxiety, sleep disruption, brain fog, and hot flushes can cause discomfort and distress, which in turn can a ect workplace performance. While menopause isnít a protected characteristic in itself, discrimination laws may still apply as it could be linked to equality act claims for sex, age or disability discrimination.
Reasonable adjustments can vary greatly depending on the individual needs of the employee, but these could include flexible working hours, amended start and finish times or time o for medical appointments. For some disabilities, employers may also provide aids such as screen reading
software or dictation tools or make physical alterations to workplace premises.
Even if a condition doesnít meet the legal definition of a disability, talking to a trusted manager or HR personnel early on can open the channels of communication and potentially lead to reasonable adjustments to support your health.
Asserting your right to a healthy and supportive working environment isnít just a way to take care of yourself, itís a legal entitlement. It also generally makes for a better and more positive environment, which in itself is likely to have a positive impact, particularly on mental health. Employees have a vital role to play in shaping this culture, by recognising when they need help and by speaking up.

Matthew Li has won Chef of the Year at the Liverpool Hospitality Awards. Absolutely heads to The Municipal Hotel & Spa MGallery to meet him
The Municipal Hotel & Spa MGallery in Liverpool is no stranger to these pages thanks to its trio of stunning dining options.
Seaforth Restaurant is their refined British brasserie celebrating Liverpoolís maritime and trade heritage, crafting dishes inspired by ìconnections to land and seaî, using seasonal, locally sourced produce. The Botanic Tearoom specialises in elegant afternoon tea with a signature Liverpool twist. Tea sommeliers guide guests through a three tiered experience of finger sandwiches, freshly baked scones, pastries, and bespoke cocktails using regional teas. And, anchored in the stunning central atrium, the Palm Court lends itself to stylish daytime dining and evening cocktails, o ering a rotating selection of bar snacks (like duck scotch egg or lobster mac & cheese), light lunches, and evening guests can select from tea inspired cocktails (such as Earl Grey Sour), fine wines, Champagne, and premium spirits. By dusk, it transforms into a sophisticated cocktail bar enveloped by original Victorian features and dramatic palm≠tree dÈcor.
But there is even another reason to visit the hotel as one of their chefs, Matthew Li, has been named the best in the business at a recent awards ceremony. Absolutely met him to find out about his background,
his involvement at the hotel and what winning the award means to him.
Q Congratulations on your success at the Liverpool Hospitality Awards. How did that feel?
A Thank you, to win the award felt incredible. I felt a huge sense of pride and accomplishment having been recognised and rewarded by other experts in our hospitality sector.
Q How long have you been cooking professionally for now?
A I have been cooking professionally now for eight years, ever since I left high school.
Q Did you always have an interest in cooking from a young age?
A Yes, in fact it was my grandparents who inspired me from as early as I can remember. They used to own restaurants and takeaways in Manchesterís Chinatown when they migrated from Hong Kong in the 1950s. They spent every summer and Christmas at our house, and I would always join them cooking family dinner every night.
Q What was the first professional kitchen you worked in and how do you look back on the experience?
A The first professional kitchen I worked in was Manchesterís prestigious 5≠star Lowry Hotel. The experience really cemented my
ambitions to become a chef and create a career for myself. From the cooking itself to the camaraderie, to the adrenaline of service, I knew I had found my calling.
Q Have any chefs youíve worked with played a particular role in shaping the chef you are today?
A There are many names I could mention, however, one really sticks out: Andrew Green. He was the first chef I completed my apprenticeship under at The Lowry Hotel and have worked for him ever since, even to this day. I would say he is my role model, mentor and friend.
Q How long have you been working at The Municipal Hotel for and why were you originally attracted to a role there?
A I have been working at the Municipal Hotel now for just over a year I started in May last year. For me it was a very simple decision and a couple of key factors that attracted me to the job. First of all there is something quite special about being a part of Liverpoolís only 5≠star hotel and working for a brand as special as MGallery. Also there is the factor of my leadership here at the hotel: Andrew Green is the Executive Head Chef and is influential in my ambitions to work here. But then when I met with the General Manager, Annie Brown, and we discussed the future of the business it was clear to me that this is where I wanted to be. Finally, if you have ever visited or seen the hotel, youíd also feel the same magic and wonder that I felt when walking through the reception and into our magnificent Palm Court Bar and Seaforth Restaurant.
Q Can you describe what your day to day job entails?
A There is never a typical day≠to≠day for me as every day throws something di erent at you. Being such a large property with
many outlets, no two days are ever the same. From weddings, to banqueting, to afternoon tea in our beautiful Botanic Tea Room, to our Seaforth a la carte restaurant, to our private dining rooms and event spaces, there is always something to keep us on our toes. So, to answer the question, I would say that, generally, my day≠to≠day role is keeping our department organised, motivated and ensuring standards are kept to the level we demand from ourselves day in, day out. And of course, there is the odd bit of paperwork thrown in here and there as well.
Q Do you have any involvement in the planning of menus?
A Yes, I am very fortunate to have a lot of input and be involved with discussions of our menus. Some of the dishes on the menu are also influenced by my grandparents and parentsí recipes too of which makes them very proud.
Q During the summer, are there any ingredients you really love working with?
A In the summertime, there are two ingredients that I just adore. The first
being British strawberries, they are just perfect this time of year; and the second is Isle of Wight tomatoes just like the strawberries, you donít have to do too much if anything to them, just let them sing and showcase themselves.
Q What dishes on any of the menus right now do you particularly love and why?
A On our Palm Court menu, I love the Gochujang Korean Fried Chicken. Sweet, spicy, umami, crunchy and moorish thatís the best way to describe it. And then on our Seaforth menu, I love the ëScouseí: as a plate of food is stunning. Cumbrian rack of lamb, 12≠hour braised beef shin stew, pickled cabbage and a red wine sauce what a belter!
Q What ambitions do you have for the rest of your career?
A I have many ambitions. The first one being I would like to establish my name and reputation to a wider audience and continue the journey of this amazing hotel. However, I would say the one that drives and motivates me the most is developing the next generation of chefs into world beaters. There is nothing more satisfying to me than nurturing and developing a junior member of the team it is something I take pride in and will continue to do so.

Why Rose Farm has everything you need, from top quality butchery all the way through to posting a birthday card
Rose Farm is a mixed livestock farm situated in the small village of Utkinton in the heart of the Cheshire countryside. They specialise in the production of quality beef cattle and pigs. The cattle and pigs raised on the farm are processed for sale in their farm shop, providing a range of succulent meat products. They started out in a converted dairy on the original Rose Farm site back 1985, but were able to grow thanks to a loyal customer base and many of those customers still shop with them now at the purpose built outlet that they operate from today.
When Rose Farm started many years ago, selling meat from a converted farm building, their objective was to o er quality meat that they had produced themselves. Years later and they are still operating with the same philosophy.
Rose Farm produces beef and pork on their farm, which is then sold through the farm shop. They also purchase from local trusted suppliers when they need additional supplies, ensuring that they continue to be able to provide the customers with quality produce. The beef is hung for at least 21 days to ensure great tasting, succulent cuts of tender meat. Their lamb comes from Andrew Williamson, Ridge Hill Farm, Utkinton. The fact that they produce their own meat and buy from local suppliers means they can provide full traceability on all cuts, right through from field to plate.
Rose Farmís Delicatessen stocks a range of farmhouse cheese and home cooked meats. For the cheese range they rely on the best of British: they have classic Blue Stilton
and Nantwich Blue, Somerset Brie and Farmhouse Cheshire to name a few. If you require a selection for a cheese board, you certainly wonít be disappointed in what they have to o!er.
Their cooked meats are all prepared and cooked on the premises, including their fantastic roast ham, succulent roast beef and tasty turkey. The display is always a sight to behold.
They stock a large selection of fresh fruit and vegetables which they try to source as locally as possible depending on the seasons and availability.
From local Cheshire potatoes to succulent juicy strawberries from just down the road, quality local produce can be found here.
Rose Farm have fresh, handpicked cut flowers for every season. Handmade bouquets are made to suit any occasion and budget, either whilst you wait or pre≠ ordered by phone or email.
They o!er funeral and sympathy flowers made on request and designed to meet your needs, and a full bespoke wedding service is available, starting with a complimentary consultation.
Rose Farm Post O ce o!ers postal and banking services, enabling you to get those extra jobs done whilst you do your shopping. There are banking facilities (including withdrawals and deposits), postal services with daily collections, and a foreign currency bureau.
The banks linked to the Post O ce are Santander, Lloyds, Barclays, Halifax, Nationwide, Co≠op, HSBC, NatWest, TSB and also some internet banks.
The Post O ce times are: Mon / Tues 9am≠12.30pm and 1.30pm≠5pm; Wed 9am≠ 12.30pm and 1.30pm≠4pm; Thurs / Fri 9am≠12.30pm and 1.30pm≠5pm; and Sat 9am≠12.30pm, and closed on Sundays.

There is nowhere better to start our wellbeing special than with a visit to Fearne Cottonís Happy Place Festival
Fe arne Cottonís Happy Place Festival began as a natural evolution of her long≠held passion for wellbeing, mindfulness, and meaningful conversation. Here, Absolutely looks into its origins, notable past appearances, and what the Tatton Park gathering in August 2025 has in store.
Fearne Cotton launched her Happy Place brand in 2018, starting with a podcast centred on mental health, self≠care, and positivity. Encouraged by its success and inspired by her personal journey sheís spoken candidly about navigating anxiety, panic attacks, and the toll of early fame Fearne expanded the brand into books and, soon after, live immersive experiences.
In 2019, the inaugural Happy Place Festival unfolded across two pioneering weekends: Chiswick House & Gardens in London on 3rd≠4th August and Tatton Park on 7th≠8th September.
A collaboration with ritualistic lifestyle brand Rituals, the early festivals emphasised slowing down, presence, and joy in everyday rituals. The first events built the blueprint: a blend of yoga, breathwork, creative workshops, live podcast recordings, and expert≠led panels.
After pauses during lockdowns, the festival rebooted in 2023, drawing record attendance over two venues again (July in London; early September at Tatton Park).
Over the years the festival has become known not just for its calming energy, but for diverse, high≠ profile participants across wellness, entertainment, and creativity spheres.
In 2019, the founding year, the festival partnered with notonthehighstreet for craft sessions, as well as the likes of breathwork practitioners like Rebecca Dennis (Breathing Tree).
The 2023 event featured a stellar roster: Vicky Pattison, Adele Roberts, Nick Grimshaw, and Ugo Monye, all bringing a mix of celebrity insight and authentic
life stories. There was also health and self≠care voices like Rhiannon Lambert, Gabby Bernstein, and Alice Liveing. The momentum continued last year, with guest speakers including Frankie Bridge, Joshua Patterson, Paul Brunson, Gary and Emma Neville, and Sofie Hagan all blending inspiration with live podcast recordings and more.
Returning for its fifth edition in 2025, Happy Place splits between Gunnersbury Park (London, 12th≠13th July) and Tatton Park on 30th≠31st August. Tatton Parkís weekend, in particular, is shaping up to be a special experience.
1.
The Tatton Park line≠up features inspiring voices: Fearne Cotton herself will be hosting live podcast episodes, as well as a "Live Happy Place Book Club". Gemma Atkinson, Jordan Stephens, Millie Mackintosh, Vogue Williams, Katie Piper, and Scott Thomas will also share personal journeys, wellness insights, and laughter across both days. Experts in emotional and personal growth like Johnny Lawrence, Kirsty Gallagher, Donna Ashworth, Donna Lancaster, Dr Milli Raizada, Gemma Felix, Satya Sanctuary, and Yasmeen Mohamed will be hosting sessions on fear, colour therapy, sound baths, movement, and deeper self≠exploration.
2. PILLARS OF WELLBEING
The event centres around seven pillars of personal development: meditation, yoga, sound, nutrition, movement, craft and new in 2025 hormones. These encompass: Meditation Tepee with guided breathing, astrology, colour therapy; Yoga & Movement Areas with flow yoga, ecstatic dance,
Pilates, Qi Gong; Sound Teepee coming alive with gong baths and sound healing journeys; Nutrition Tepee, where you can discover health and sleep≠focused sessions; Craft Tepee: featuring pottery, jewellery≠making, storytelling; and the Hormones Tepee with dedicated discussions on menstrual health and menopause, addressing a long≠overlooked wellness space.
3. ACTIVITIES & EXPERIENCES
Workshops will include Breathwork + Sound Baths with Jambo Dragon, Sharon Millman, Gemma Felix, Satya Sanctuary. Movement sessions will include embodied yoga flow + ecstatic dance, lymphatic self≠ massage, barre≠style workouts (Deep Beats Barre) in partnership with Sweaty Betty. Interactive workshops on the bill include colour therapy, cosmic purpose exploration, and transforming fear into purpose.
There are also the main stages: Talk Stage, with continuous live interviews and conversations; Centre Stage featuring drop≠in sessions of yoga, poetry, music
performances; Expressive Arts, where you can expect poetry, book readings, spoken word, and creative showcases; and Childrenís Corner with family≠ friendly crafts, creative movement, face painting, and mini golf.
4. SHOPPING & FOOD
The Shopping Village will boast curated independent and sustainable brands focused on wellness, lifestyle, and creativity. The Book Stall will enable you to discover new publications and author signings (including Fearneís titles). There will also be street food vendors: cooking up vegetarian, vegan, and GF options to fuel your festival journey. As Fearne Cotton says: ìWhether youíve never even seen a yoga mat in real life or you meditate daily, weíve created something for everyoneÖ a space to relax, recharge, learn something new and hopefully leave feeling that bit better.î

The Cheshire-based founder of Glow Hub writes about creating a skincare brand for the younger generation
By TIFFANYSALMON - MILLS
Iíve always been a total skincare junkie, and although I didnít think it possible, that passion has only grown throughout my 15 years working in the beauty industry. When I began researching ideas for a new brand, I wasnít actually planning to launch a skincare line. But the more I explored, the more I realised there was a huge gap in the market for a brand that spoke to Gen Z in a way that felt aspirational, educational and most importantly, efective. I always think back to my own teenage years, when the only options were harsh, face≠burning three≠step kits your mum picked up in John Lewis. It shocked me how little had changed since then. So in 2020, I launched Glow Hub, a skincare brand designed for the next generation. My goal was to make skincare accessible, personal, and efective. From the start, I wanted to ditch the clinical packaging and create something that worked just as hard, but still felt expressive and customisable, because Gen Z values individuality more than ever. I launched with 21 products, which is pretty much unheard of, and they were all designed to be mixed and matched depending on your skinís needs whether thatís breakouts, sensitivity, dehydration or scarring. We also built in education from the ground up. I didnít just want to sell products
“ONE OF THE KEY PILLARS I AM PASSIONATE ABOUT IS BARRIER HEALTH”
I wanted to help young people understand what they were putting on their skin and why.
Todayís teens are constantly bombarded with skincare advice and product recommendations much of it coming from unqualifi ed, unreliable voices on platforms like TikTok (however much we love it!). The content is often confusing at best, and at worst, completely inappropriate for hormonally sensitive, adolescent skin. Itís no surprise that parents feel just as overwhelmed as their children. With so much noise and misinformation circulating, nding clear, trustworthy skincare guidance has never been more difcult.
We know that Gen Z loves to experiment with a wide variety of products, but this trial≠and≠error approach can often lead to sensitivity, irritation, and even allergic reactions. Thatís why every Glow Hub product is clearly categorised and labelled to make the shopping experience as simple and informative as possible.
One of the key pillars Iím passionate about is barrier health. Itís something I think is so important protecting your skin barrier and avoiding long≠term damage. Our Barrier Builder range has become a bestseller for exactly that reason. Itís formulated to be gentle, efective, and safe suitable even for younger skin types from age 7 and up.
But even with years of experience in the beauty industry from my Creative Director role at Amelia Knight, I wasnít prepared for what came next. At the end of 2023, my eight≠ year≠old daughter came home from school asking for an £80 moisturiser and a high≠ strength BHA toner her friends at school had seen on TikTok. That moment really stopped me in my tracks. If my own child who lives in a household where skincare is taken seriously and discussed openly, was being infl uenced this heavily, what hope did other parents have who didnít work in the industry?
I had to act quickly and responsibly. So along with my amazing team and the Glow Hub lab in the UK, we created the Glow Hub Kids & Teens Skincare Hub a dedicated space on our website with guides, quizzes, and expert≠led content to help consumers and their parents navigate skincare safely. I also commissioned additional toxicology testing across our core range to see which products were suitable for younger users. Now, each product is clearly labelled with age guidance 7+, 13+, or 16+ so that parents and children can make informed, safe choices.
We donít target Gen Alpha with our marketing, but I know theyíre watching. We as a brand canít control how they are infl uenced by older siblings, creators on TikTok and YouTube, and the world around them. So we make sure the education is there because if theyíre going to use our skincare, I want them to do it safely.
Since launching, weíve created some really exciting product innovations. One of my favourites is our Super Shroom range a three≠step ritual including a serum mist, treatment lotion and mud mask, powered by adaptogens like reishi, cordyceps and chaga mushrooms. These ingredients work together to hydrate, calm infl ammation and protect the skin barrier basically, everything stressed≠out skin needs. We also introduced a skincare≠infused makeup line (which was so fun to develop) and this year, weíre entering the fragrance category with our rst range of hair and body mists.
Iím incredibly proud of what weíve built. Today, Glow Hub is stocked in 40
countries worldwide and in the UK we are in Sephora, Selfridges, H Beauty, Beauty Bay, ASOS, LookFantastic and, most recently, 400 Superdrug stores in the UK. But our mission remains the same: to simplify skincare, speak to young people in a way thatís fun but informed, and always put education and wellbeing at the centre of everything we do.
Glow Hub is the brand I wish I had as a teenager. And the fact that I now get to bring that vision to life and help shape a more positive, responsible future for the beauty industry means everything to me.

Serves 4 1 hour
Rachel Rees says: “Preparation is key for busy clients looking to eat well whilst remaining energised throughout the day. I love this recipe because it's packed with blood sugar-balancing nutrients, and it can be eaten hot or cold.”
• 1 vegetable stock cube
• 125ml boiling water
• 100g dry wholemeal couscous
• 1 tbsp honey
• 1 tbsp sriracha
• 1 tsp balsamic vinegar
• 200g halloumi, sliced
• 1 large cauliflower, chopped into small florets
• 1 x 400g tin chickpeas, drained and rinsed
• 1 tbsp paprika, sweet or smoked
• 1 tbsp harissa
• 1 tbsp olive oil
• 1 red onion, chopped
• Handful of rocket and/or spinach
METHOD
1 Preheat the oven to 200°C/180°C fan/gas mark 6.
2 Add a stock cube to 125ml of boiling water in a bowl and stir. Add the couscous and cover. Set aside.
3 In a bowl, mix the honey, sriracha and balsamic vinegar. Add the sliced halloumi and mix well, ensuring the halloumi is well coated with the mixture. Set aside whilst preparing the remaining ingredients.
4 Put the cauliflower and chickpeas into a roasting tin. Add the paprika, harissa and olive oil and mix until evenly coated. Spread evenly onto the tray and roast for 30-45 minutes, checking them regularly as oven temperatures can vary. Turn halfway through cooking. Add the red onion to the roasting tin for the last 20 minutes.
5 Once the vegetables are almost ready, pan fry the marinated halloumi on a medium-high heat for a couple of minutes on each side, until golden, or air fry for 5 minutes at 160°C on each side.
6 Once everything is prepared, toss the couscous and then spoon onto a serving dish. Add the roasted cauliflower, chickpeas, red onion and rocket, and lay the halloumi on top. Crumble over the feta and then drizzle some honey, sriracha and balsamic over the dish.

Belén Vázquez says: “This dish is great for those who tend to skip lunch during workdays due to time constraints. It can be made in large quantities and kept in the fridge for a few days. It is particularly rich in plant fibre, folate, B6 and antioxidants.”
• 200g butternut squash, cut into cubes
• 200g cauliflower, broken into small florets
• 2 tbsp olive oil
• 1 tbsp cumin seeds
• 2 tsp turmeric
• Salt and pepper, to taste
• 100g brazil nuts
• 200g brown rice
• 1 garlic clove, crushed
• 100g green lentils, dried
• 1 large red onion, chopped
• 200g pomegranate seeds
• Handful of fresh dill, chopped
• 200g feta, crumbled
For the salad dressing
• Juice of 1 large orange
• 2 tbsp pomegranate molasses
• 3 tbsp date paste or 2 tsp honey, syrup or date molasses
• Salt, to taste
1 Heat the oven to 200°C/180°C fan/ gas mark 6 and line a baking tray with baking parchment.
2 Place the butternut squash and cauliflower on the baking tray and drizzle with the olive oil. Scatter on the cumin seeds, dust with turmeric, and season generously with salt and pepper. Use your hands to ensure that every piece is coated. Roast for 30-35 minutes until both cauliflower and butternut squash are tender. After 20 minutes, add the brazil nuts to roast with them. After the full 3035 minutes, remove from the oven and leave to cool down.
3 Once the vegetables are in the oven, brown the dry rice in a saucepan on the hob with the garlic in a little olive oil for 5 minutes. Cover with water, add salt, and leave to simmer. Then, in a separate pan with a lid, cover the lentils with water and bring to the boil. Leave both the rice and lentils to cook for 20-30 minutes until tender. When done, give them a quick rinse under cold water to bring them to room temperature and stop them from further cooking. This will allow them to stay tender but firm.
4 In a large bowl, toss the cooked rice and lentils; roasted cauliflower, butternut squash and brazil nuts; red onion, pomegranate and dill.
5 Combine the dressing ingredients in a bowl then pour over the tossed ingredients and mix well. Serve with the feta crumbled over the top.
ìThis recipe ticks all the health and wellbeing boxesî
Serves 4 25-40 mins
Patrick Holford says: “This recipe ticks all the boxes: high in omega-3 and vitamin B12, great for the brain; low GL [glycaemic load] so great for weight control; high in folate and other B vitamins so supports methylation, along with B12 in the mackerel; and high in antioxidants and polyphenols from the spices, black pepper, and veg.”
• 60g wholegrain bulgur wheat, quinoa or brown rice makes 180g cooked
• 2 eggs
• 2 tbsp mild or medium olive oil (not extra virgin), virgin rapeseed oil or coconut oil
• 1 garlic clove, crushed
• 1 large or 2 small onions, finely chopped
• 1⁄2-1 tsp ground smoked paprika or cayenne
• 1⁄2-1 tsp ground cumin
• 1⁄2-1 tsp ground turmeric
• 2 smoked mackerel fillets (approx. 275g)
• 100g frozen petit pois
• 200g tenderstem broccoli, cut in half
• 1 tbsp tahini
• Black pepper, to taste
• 4 tbsp flat leaf parsley, finely chopped
METHOD
1 Measure out three times as much water as bulgur, quinoa or brown basmati rice in a pan and bring it to the boil. Add the bulgur, quinoa or rice and simmer on a low heat for 8 minutes (bulgur), 13 minutes (quinoa)
or 35 minutes (brown rice), then drain any surplus water, if needed.
2 Meanwhile, hard boil the eggs in a pan of boiling water for 6 minutes then cool rapidly under the tap for a minute. Set aside to fully cool before peeling and slicing into quarters.
3 Heat the olive oil in a large saucepan and sweat the garlic and onion for a minute or so before adding the spices. Let them gently cook for a further few minutes, taking care not to let them burn, until the onions are soft and fragrant.
4 Break the smoked mackerel into small pieces and add to the saucepan, stirring them in.
5 Meanwhile, add the petit pois to boiling water and wait until the water is boiling again, then add the broccoli pieces. Once the peas float to the top, remove from the heat, drain, then add to the onion and mackerel.
6 Stir in the cooked grains until evenly coated and then add the hardboiled eggs.
7 Stir in the tahini to make it creamy and season with plenty of pepper. You wonít need any salt thanks to the salty smoked fish and the strength of the spices. Garnish with the parsley.

Do women hold an advantage in ultra endurance sport? One writer argues the case
By EMMAWILKINSON
ìIn the world of cold open water swimming, women are often faster than men over long distancesî
When British vet and ultra runner Jasmin Paris battled through searing pain, unsettling hallucinations and biting cold to win the Montane Winter Spine Race in 2019, the headlines reverberated around the world. Not only had she won the 268≠mile race along the Pennine Way outright, she had smashed the course record and was 15 hours ahead of the second≠placed man.
That she had accomplished this stunning feat, running from Edale in the Peak District, through the Yorkshire Dales, Northumberland National Park and Cheviots to Kirk Yetholm on the Scottish Borders, while expressing breast milk for her 14≠month≠old daughter along the way seemed unimaginable to most.
Yet for those closely involved in ultra and fell running, it came as no surprise. They had predicted Paris was the one to beat. She had shown her prowess in this sport time and again. They knew that in the world of ultra endurance, women could win races outright. They had seen it happen. But the rest of the world was yet to wake up. It still hasnít. Her achievement was truly outstanding, but Paris was not a one≠of aberration. Women had won ultra races outright,
broken world records and achieved fastest known times on multiple occasions across a range of sports.
In 2016, ultra cyclist Lael Wilcox won the Trans Am Continental Bike Race across America after largely being considered ìa jokeî on the start line in her plain grey cotton t≠shirt and patterned shorts.
New to competitive racing but having cycled all over the world, Lael slowly picked of the other riders until there was only one man in front of her on the 4,000≠mile fully self≠supported event. He suggested they nish the race together to which she replied ìthis is the best bit we get to race to the endî. With 100 miles to go she easily took and held rst place. Last year Lael broke the womenís record for cycling round the world and she now has the menís record in her sights.
In the world of cold open water swimming, women are often faster than men over long distances. Whether itís swimming the English Channel, around Manhattan Island or across the Catalina channel in California, women have proven themselves to be faster than men and not by a small margin. US swimmer Lynne Cox began breaking records as a teenager, breaking the overall English Channel record in 1972 at the age of just 15. She remains the only person to have ever swum the Bering Strait between the US and Russia.
ìPregnancy is one of the biggest feats of endurance the body can go throughî
In researching Ultra Women: The Trailblazers Defying Sexism in Sport, my co≠author Lily Canter and I came across countless untold stories of female ultra endurance achievement going back throughout history. Women were breaking records as we were writing. But it also begged the question whether women have an advantage at long distances. Is there something about their physiology or psychology that means they can keep going and persist when others have reached their limits?
Scientists are only just waking up to the endurance potential of women so there remains a lot to learn. For several reasons, not least a long≠held and damaging view that women are too weak to undertake such endeavours, there are also far fewer women in ultra sport on which to draw conclusions. But we do have some important clues. Factors that can be seen in how athletes like Jasmin and Lael approached and executed their wins that have also been backed up in the lab. The female hormone oestrogen has key efects on metabolism, regulating body temperature, how fat is stored and distributed in the body and adapting to endurance. Pregnancy itself is one of the biggest feats of endurance the body can go through.
In ultra events, winning is not a calculation solely based on speed. Success requires an ability to withstand fatigue, cope with sleep deprivation, metabolise and make use of fuel, and sustain muscle damage.
Women do have more fatigue≠resistant muscles, this has been shown time and again. Under a microscope it is possible to see the preponderance of type I ëslow≠ twitchí bres in women. These bres have the ability to keep contracting over and over without burning out. Studies have also shown at the end of ultra races, womenís muscles are less tired and overall they appear to have sustained less physiological ëdamageí than men in the same event.
In long≠distance swimming, the clear advantage held by women is mostly likely explained by having a greater percentage of body fat which not only keeps you warm and buoyant but is a source of energy. Thanks to higher levels of the hormone adiponectin, women are more efcient at metabolising their fat stores, and not just when theyíre in the water.
If you ask an ultra athlete what makes women so good at this, they will likely also point to a psychological advantage around being exible in the face of the unexpected, preparing diligently for a race or event, and being able to withstand pain. Here the evidence of diferences between the sexes is less clear. Whether women are better at looking after themselves during a challenge and making good decisions when exhausted are likely societal rather than some innate ability. But the data does show that women are excellent at pacing and ensuring they stick to a steady speed that helps them to keep going longer.
For women to reach their full potential in ultra sport, we need to stop seeing every win as a one≠of uke by an athlete that has somehow turned conventional thinking on its head and recognise that women may actually be built for endurance. We need more research to unpick why this might be, but also to support those taking part to understand how to train, fuel and make the most of any advantage they may have. We also need to remove the barriers that prevent women signing up for events in the rst place with on average four men for every woman on the start line of an ultra running event. Every woman we spoke to said, ìI just wanted to see if I couldî. Letís support women to keep pushing beyond expectations and show just how far they can go.

Too old to work out? A trainer at F45who have studios dotted around the North Westwrites that the excuse does not stack up
The elixir of eternal life? Not exactly, but strength otherwise known as resistance training is in the training world like drinking from the Fountain of Youth.
The American Journal of Medicine (2004) analyzed a group of over 55s and showed an inverse relationship between skeletal mass index (SMI) and all≠cause mortality; in other words, the more lean muscle in our composition is linked to lower risk of all≠cause mortality. Building lean muscle mass saves lives.
The aging process is characterised by loss of muscle tissue, strength, balance, stamina, reduced bone density and reduced resistance to illness and injury. Strength training has the ability to preserve and even increase skeletal muscle tissue. Strength training does not discriminate by gender, orientation and least of all by age.
Assuming that we are dealing with an over 60≠year≠old that has received the all clear by their medical professional to train in light of any injuries or health problems, our approach would be the same for any other member we are dealing with.
The starting point we would carry out very much depends on their experience level when dealing with external loads. The law of progressive overload where people progressively increase repetitions and gradual resistance by increasing the weight on the bar is applicable to all ages, and when dealing with an older age group it should be no di erent.
Squats, presses, pulling exercises, all compound lifts hitting all planes of movement and above all maximising range of movement ensures we provide enough tensile stimulus for muscle maintenance and growth, as well an opportunity to work on mobility through full range of movement which allows our seniors to work on their overall flexibility.
When dealing with a younger cohort of people we apply modifications to exercises in case of injury, exercise preferences and limiting factors such as mobility; with an over≠60 age group we would approach it in very much the same way, we aim for compound lifts and apply modifications in accordance with a client's limitations. An example of this would be a back squat, a king of lower body exercises. If we lack strength with a traditional barbell back squat we would regress to a leg press machine, to a bodyweight variation and even regressing the exercise to a chair squat variation which can be done in a living room. Moreover, the initial weight (resistance)
being used and rate of progress will be slower due to the hormonal make up of a person in their over 60s, but the concept of the Stress Adaptive Response (SAR) whereby we stimulate the muscle and wait for its recovery to be even stronger still stands. The person may be older in age, but is still a living human and our principle of linear progression still stands.
The frequency of training would have to be taken into account as the slower rate of recovery as mentioned earlier with the SAR would mean that our frequency of training would have to be modified.
With a less experienced sample of older people we would lay the foundations for more advanced strength training. The ideal route would be to start with bodyweight exercises where the individual becomes accustomed to an initial lower level of resistance, for example bodyweight squats, push ups, reverse lunges and assisted pull ups. From there we apply the Bompa (2009) approach and program the strength training.
Bompa, the godfather of periodized strength training, would put the individual through a circuit based strength workout where the external loads are still lower than in a traditional strength program, with repetition ranges in sets as high as 20 plus reps. Once we have carried this out over a period of months, we get individuals into a traditional strength program with any modifications applied whenever and wherever necessary. The optimal muscle building rep range is 10≠12 reps, that is approximately 70% of your 1 rep max. This is the optimal avenue for muscle growth and all the health benefits. In an ideal world people would take the strength/resistance training route as soon as possible in such a way that we slow the aging process. Nevertheless, it
ìAs an instructor I have seen all agesand I mean all ages - go into the studio, train and reap the benefits of resistance training"
is never too late and with the presence of qualified trainers, it is a healthy and safe approach to over≠60 training. At F45 we train all ages and redefined years ago what Team Training is. As an instructor I have seen all ages and I mean all ages go into the studio, train and reap the benefits of resistance training. We provide both resistance and hybrid workouts at our gyms worldwide following standardised and programmed workout programs that can unlock rejuvenating workouts to keep us as healthy as possible. My message to over≠60s is simple: you can do it with guidance and support. Like with many things in life our attitude is our real limiting factor.

After navigating IVF, pregnancy, and postpartum recovery in my thirties, I hit my forties determined to take back control of my tness. So when I had the chance to try a FOLD Reformer bed at home, I jumped at the opportunity and enlisted expert trainer Aimee Long to help elevate my workouts.
Aimee has trained celebrities and royalty, but her approach is refreshingly down≠to≠earth. She mixes Pilates, barre, strength
training, and HIIT to create workouts that challenge without breaking you. As a fellow busy mum, she also understands the need for efcient sessions which was perfect for my schedule. We trained virtually twice a week for a month using the FOLD bed, hand weights, and Pilates accessories. Each session was a full≠body burn. Aimee pushed me with combinations of dynamic Reformer moves tricep dips, inner thigh pulses, round≠ the≠worlds and oor≠based cardio and strength work that had me breathless and sore
in the best way. She adjusted the plan as we went, helping me target ankle stability and core strength, while focusing on form over intensity. What stood out most was Aimeeís personalised, holistic approach. Rather than focusing on weight loss, she encouraged me to reframe my goals: to build strength, improve mobility, and challenge my body with purpose. At 42, I can honestly say I feel stronger and more connected to my body than ever before.

The founder of North West-based Charlotte Findlater Design on the inspiration behind this stunning cottage
By CHARLOTTEFINDLATER
Our mission is to revolutionize the world of regenerative design and build through architecture and luxury interior design by pioneering a unique approach that respects time, nature, and people. We are committed to creating transformative spaces that harmonize with the environment and enhance human well≠being. Through our dedication to regenerative practices, artisan craftsmanship, and thoughtful design, we strive to inspire a deeper connection between our clients and the natural world, while leaving a lasting, positive impact on the planet.
We were approached by our client of this cottage because of our strong belief in ecological design and our core ethos. This fabulous property sits high above Lake Coniston with a stunning garden that sweeps down to the lake shore. The property is surrounded by an enchanting natural forest, protected due to its location within the Lake District UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Wishing to use as many natural materials as possible within the design, we aligned the project to that of a squirrelís drey: a nest made of twigs and leaves, primarily symbolising shelter, safety and ultimately a place of refuge. One of our core ethos is that of human health within the built environment: we considered all the material used in order to create a home that was ultimately healthy for our client.
Our client wished for the interior of the building to be reflective of this special location, seeking to create an inside/outside feeling, a sanctuary that would also be reflective of her character.
In design, we bring characteristics of the natural world into built spaces, such as water, greenery, and natural light, or elements like wood and stone. Encouraging the use of natural systems and processes in design allows for exposure to nature, and in turn, these design approaches improve health and wellbeing. There are a number of possible benefits, including reduced heart rate variability and pulse rates, decreased blood pressure, and increased activity in our nervous systems, to name a few.
Establishing multi≠sensory experiences, we can design interiors that resonate across ages and demographics. These rooms and spaces connect us to nature as a proven way to inspire us, boost our productivity, and create greater well≠being. Beyond these benefits, by reducing stress and enhancing creativity, we can also expedite healing. In our increasingly urbanized cities, biophilia advocates a more humanistic approach to design. The result is biophilic interiors that celebrate how we live, work and learn with nature.
In order to stir people, architecture and interior design must have rhythm and harmony akin to music. It should have the passion of an aria and the power of beauty. The tools we wield to deliver this kind of emotional impact are light, proportion, materials, structure, opacity, and transparency to name but a few. These are some of the elements in design, which we use to create the desired emotional e ect.
John Ruskin once said, ëWhen we build, let us think we build foreverí. A timeless house speaks of authenticity, character, and lived in history that reveals itself through the natural patinas that come with age. Authenticity is important, because it seems in such short supply in our fast≠paced world. Itís there in buildings that have lasted because they were well constructed, that have endured. Timelessness may be a quality di cult to define, but we know it when we see it. It also has to do with honesty and integrity. It is immune to the changes and evolutions of fashion and trends itís classic. What we hope most is for the houses we design to a ect people in an inspiring way. Thatís an ambitious and audacious goal, but I know that design has that kind of power. A house says things about us whether we like it or not. I want the houses we design to say the right things about the people who live in them. I try to intuitively understand our clients, to comprehend the deeper meaning of what they say and what is unspoken. What is the essence of these people? What are their values? I listen to their desires for the home. I begin to envision a trajectory for the design that would render shape and form to best express them as they truly are. If I understand them from the beginning, the design happens in an almost e ortless way. In the end, there will be something standing that could cast a shadow for centuries, telling their story.
The analogy of a squirrelís drey has always resonated deeply and encompasses the idea of home as a sanctuary, the place where we shelter from life storms, and escape from the frenzied world that we live in. But on a more soulful level it speaks to the importance of creating a space that feels personal and nurturing. The spaces we call home, and with those that we care about. Being in our dreys isnít about shutting the world out; itís about focusing on the human touch. And how by listening to our hearts, we can transform and heighten our experience of a nurturing home.
Having finished the house we have now been tasked with the re≠wilding of the garden and to incorporate fruit trees, vegetable beds and moments within the garden in which to socialise, eat and play.

Igniting her potential
QUEENETHELBURGA'S Queen Ethelburgaís have become renowned for giving their pupils the platforms to take the lead on their own mental wellbeing - as well as ensuring they develop a love for learning right from the get go. qe.org
Situated within the historic Roman walls of Chester, The Queenís School is recognised as Cheshireís leading independent school for girls, providing a dynamic and enriching education for ages 4 to 18 that fosters academic excellence and personal development. Its students consistently achieve outstanding GCSE and A≠level results, placing the school among top performers nationally. Beyond academics, The Queenís School is committed to nurturing confident, compassionate and well≠ rounded individuals, equipping them
to lead, inspire and shape the future. Here, Head Joanne Keville writes about leadership at The Queenís School and how this is something they instil from an early age...
Helping girls understand their potential as leaders isnít about waiting until Sixth Form or assigning a few badges. At The Queenís School, it starts the moment they walk through our doors. Whether in Reception or preparing for university, every girl is encouraged to develop the skills, confidence and conviction to lead. We see leadership not as something exclusive, but as something every pupil can experience and grow into. From the early years, our approach is centred on participation. Girls are
actively involved in shaping their school experience, whether thatís contributing to School Parliament, mentoring younger pupils, or working collaboratively on community projects. These roles matter because they are real. Girls make decisions, solve problems and speak up for what they believe in. Over time, this instils the understanding that leadership is not defined by hierarchy, but by action and responsibility.
One of the most powerful things we can do as educators is to make leadership feel accessible. That means creating an environment where girls are not only allowed to take up space, but are expected to. We encourage them to question, to
propose ideas, to learn through trial and error. Confidence doesnít come from always getting things right, but from knowing that your voice is valued and your contributions make a di erence.
In an all≠girls environment, this process is unburdened by some of the pressures that can exist elsewhere. Without the subtle dynamics that can make girls hesitate or self≠censor, they are free to take intellectual risks and step forward without fear of judgement. We see the di erence this makes every day. Whether they are leading a debate, launching a sustainability initiative, or pushing the boundaries of a science project, our students are engaged and empowered. Strong leadership also begins with strong relationships. Our teaching sta take time to understand each girl as an individual. That knowledge allows us to guide them with care and challenge them when needed. The result is a culture where high achievement and emotional intelligence go hand in hand. We talk a
lot about future readiness, but one of the most important aspects of that is a sense of self. When girls know who they are, they are better equipped to lead others with empathy and perspective.
Above all, we want our pupils to view leadership as something that can be used for good. Success is not only measured by outcomes, but by the way it is achieved. Many of our former pupils go on to build impressive careers in sectors ranging from engineering and medicine to creative industries and global business. But we are just as proud of the ones who choose
to lead by example in less visible ways. Some advocate for others, some volunteer their time, and others quietly make a di erence within their communities. These choices reflect the kind of leadership we strive to nurture: one that is grounded in empathy, shaped by values, and driven by a desire to make a meaningful di erence.
One alumna recently founded a programme supporting education for girls in rural East Africa. Another is involved in improving accessibility at her university, using her voice to ensure that students with disabilities are better supported. These examples matter because they reflect the kind of leadership we aim to inspire. It isnít just about ambition or accolades. Itís about using your platform, whatever it may be, to drive change and uplift others.
This mindset takes time to develop and must be nurtured consistently. Leadership isnít a lesson on the timetable, but a thread that runs through school life. Itís in the way we encourage discussion in classrooms, support peer collaboration and give students opportunities to shape their environment. In the Sixth Form, our Q≠Elevate programme builds on this foundation. Alongside their A≠levels, girls choose from modules such as public speaking, global a airs, volunteering and personal development, creating a tailored portfolio that reflects their interests and ambitions. Whether they are mentoring in local schools or completing a university≠level MOOC, they are encouraged to take ownership of their learning and develop leadership grounded in integrity and empathy.
The world needs leaders who are not only capable, but principled and compassionate. At The Queenís School, we see it as our role to help girls grow into exactly that. By fostering an environment where leadership is lived, not just taught, we give them the tools to move forward with confidence and the values to lead with purpose.
