n Thursday, December 12, 2013, the Ventura Chamber of Commerce hosted the 17th Annual Poinsettia Awards luncheon honoring the outstanding achievements of businesses and individuals who have made a difference in the Ventura community. During the event, the Chamber presented Livingston Memorial Visiting Nurse Association with the Large Business award. Teresa Pavan and Sandy Morse accepted the honor on behalf of the agency.

ometimes we need to be reminded that we are a big business. After all our mission is to provide care to patients in their homes, which tends to make for a small and intimate environment. And, as every patient’s needs are unique, individual plans of care are utilized to achieve the highest possible outcome for each patient—our work is a lot different than making millions of uniform widgets.

The Ventura Chamber of Commerce recently reminded us, in a nice way, that despite our customized plans of care and focus on the individual patient, we are indeed a big business.

At the 17th Annual Poinsettia Awards Luncheon honoring outstanding achievements of businesses that make a difference in the community, Livingston was recognized as the Large Business of the Year. We would like to think we received this Chamber honor for our large heart.

Livingston employs almost 300 people, with our main office in the City of Ventura and branch offices in Ojai and Thousand Oaks. Last year we provided care to over 4,500 patients.

Our annual budget this year will total over $18 million. Those are large numbers, so thank you Ventura Chamber of Commerce for the honor and recognition.

Those 4,500 patients need quality home healthcare and are recovering from illness, accidents, surgeries, and chronic disease. About 700 of them are in the end stages of life and need compassionate Livingston Hospice to help them and their families with a terminal illness. Nearly 600 require subsidized care due to the fact that they are either under or uninsured.

Some require an in-home assistance hand to help them care for a sick or disabled loved one.

While an $18 million budget sounds like a lot, over 85% of it is spent on patient programs and services. Our administrative and fundraising costs account for less than 15% of expenses.

Our Board of Directors, like the rest of Livingston’s nearly 100 volunteers, receives no compensation.

Mission Statement Livingston Memorial VNA Health Corporation and Livingston Memorial Visiting Nurse Association recognize the growing need to provide services in the home environment for the sick, handicapped, elderly and homebound.

As community-supported, nonprofit organizations, they strive to provide professional, licensed and supportive home health and hospice care services of the highest quality in the most cost effective manner to the people of Ventura County to ensure a positive patient outcome.

LMVNA explores and develops health-related programs based upon community need and acceptance, economic viability, and availability of resources to provide services.

LMVNA is sensitive to the financial circumstances of its patients and provides needed services, including those at reduced or no charge to indigent patients, based upon the available resources for the organization.

The Livingston Memorial VNA Health Corporation is the parent organization of Livingston Memorial Visiting Nurse Association and Livingston CareGivers.

Livingston Memorial Visiting Nurse Association is licensed by the State of California, certified by Medicare and Medi-Cal, and is accredited by The Joint Commission.

Joint Commission accreditation is regarded as the most comprehensive review of patient safety and quality efforts in the industry. Accredited home health organizations have fewer readmits to the hospital after an episode of care.

Livingston CareGivers is a non-medical provider of in-home assistance and is CAHSAH certified and not associated with The Joint Commission.

Livingston Lights up Lives

L

ivingston’s Light Up A Life celebrates the warmth and spirit of the holiday season. Light Up increases awareness and raises crucial funds, over $60,000 last year, for Livingston Hospice. Donations ensure that all terminally ill patients living in Ventura County have access to compassionate care that leads to a better quality of life at the end of life. The 29th annual event was hosted at the Pacific View Mall in Ventura with friends, family and holiday shoppers.

Thank You Donors Livingston’s ability to care for under and uninsured patients depends upon the generous support from the community. We recently held our annual donor appreciation at our administrative office in Ventura.

The social gathering of Distinguished Donors (contributions of $1,000 or more annually and Livingston Legacy Society members) was generously underwritten by Rabobank. Beautiful flowers and decorations were provided by Sherry Scott. Gail Beltramo contributed to make the invitations lovely and affordable, and with the help of Nothing Bundt Cakes sent guests home with delicious bundtlets.

The event was deliciously catered by the Ventura Wine Company, and Tom & Karen Pecht picked up the tab for some palate pleasing fine wine. As is Livingston’s Board of Directors edict—no funds intended for patient programs were used.

Distinguished donor and super hospice volunteer Denise Ludwig shared her personal experiences with hospice both within her own family and as a member of the Livingston Hospice Team.

Question: My husband is being discharged from the hospital after routine surgery and now has several new medications to take. He already has numerous medications at home and we are confused and overwhelmed. Can anyone help us?

ANSWER: Medication mismanagement is one of the leading causes of hospitalization so you are wise to take an active role in making sure your husband takes everything correctly. Here are some helpful suggestions: • Prepare a list of all medications (name, dosage, doctor, directions, expiration date).

• Organize them in a pill box that has time specific sections.

• Purchase all medications from the same pharmacy.

• Follow directions exactly and do not stop unless told to so by your doctor.

Even with the above suggestions, medication management can still be confusing. Many people are unaware

that a nurse can help go through your husband’s meds and help get him organized. Simply ask your physician to order a Medication Reconciliation visit, Medicare will cover it.

Don’t be shy to tell you doctor you need help and ask him to call Livingston for a Medication Reconciliation visit. One of our skilled nurses will come to your home, explain, review, and go over all your spouse’s meds to make sure he is taking everything correctly.

There is a Great Need 83 year old Annie arrives home after hip surgery, but because she lives with her frail elderly spouse, there is no one there to help. She can’t bathe, dress, or fix meals right now, and until she gains back her independence, it’s obvious she needs personal help and assistance at home. Neither Medicare or MediCal pay for this kind of assistance at home and because Annie has no means to privately pay for this type of care, she’s at risk and could end up back in the hospital in worse shape than before her surgery.

There are many Annies out there who need a small amount of vital in-home assistance until they either recuperate, a relative steps in, or placement is made in a long term care facility. “The need is real, the need is great, the need is growing, and the need is now,” says Lynne Martson, Director of Livingston CareGivers. Thankfully Livingston recognizes those with limited resources and has initiated an In-home Assistance Subsidized Care Program. “Although we are just starting this program, and sustainability is always a factor, we know with community support, we will be able to fulfill this great need and help the Annies out there get back to where they deserve to be,” adds Lynne.

Did you Know…

Falls are one of the leading causes of death in people over 65.

A

bout 5,200 Ventura County senior citizens fell and needed medical assistance last year. Even worse, every 30 minutes someone in the U.S. dies from a fall. Those over 65 are most affected by falls and 15% of our residents are in this age group.

Livingston has always been in the forefront of making sure our seniors are safe and healthy. We are an integral part of Ventura County’s Fall Prevention Initiative. This group of Medical Professionals and First Responders’ focus is on “Reducing the number of preventable injuries to the elderly in Ventura County, while raising awareness regarding the need for County wide elderly injury prevention programs, and thereby maintaining a good quality of life for our cherished citizens.”

Recently Livingston participated in an all day Fall Prevention Seminar at Ventura County Medical Center.

Hundreds of seniors benefited from attending this

informative session and many lessons were learned. Some of the preventative suggestions were: n Keep walkways clear and remove tripping hazards like electrical cords and area rugs. n Provide night lighting, especially in bathrooms. n Use hand rails for bathrooms, tubs, showers, and stairs. n Have your eyes examined regularly. n Understand the effects of your medications. n Always use your prescribed assistive devices. n Exercise regularly to build strength and improve balance.

Despite our best efforts, sometimes falls do occur.

In the event of an injury, Livingston is ready to provide skilled home healthcare to get seniors back to being independent and mobile once again.

To do so requires resources and, as most of you are aware, we initiate an Annual Fund campaign at the beginning of each year to deliver the subsidized care, community education, and other community benefits we have been providing to Ventura County residents since 1947.

Our most loyal donors recognize that while it is important to provide for today’s needs, it’s equally important to plan for the future. While many of our Legacy donors also make quite generous Annual Fund gifts, some are on fixed incomes or live on a limited income stream and make modest annual gifts, but recognize their future capacity to make a more significant gift later.
