Zanzibar Won Prestigious World Travel Award as Africa's Leading Festival and Event Destination 2024

anzibar proudly claimed the prestigious title of Africa’s Leading Festival and Event Destination for 2024 at the esteemed World Travel Awards, underscoring the island's rising global influence in the tourism and events industry. This recognition, announced on October 19, 2024, at an exclusive ceremony in Mombasa, Kenya, marks a significant milestone for Zanzibar.

The World Travel Awards, established in 1993, are regarded as the pinnacle of excellence in the travel, tourism, and hospitality

sectors, representing a hallmark of quality and distinction. Zanzibar’s win highlights its dedication to hosting world-class festivals and events while maintaining its vibrant cultural heritage. This accolade also reflects the island's expanding reputation as a premier destination for tourism and investment, supported by its offerings in cultural, heritage, sports, and Halal tourism.

Zanzibar’s events calendar is a testament to its dynamic appeal. The island is home to iconic events such as Sauti za Busara, a renowned African music festival held every February; the Zanzibar International

Film Festival (ZIFF), showcasing global cinematic talent every June/July; and the Zanzibar Tourism and Investment Show, which promotes tourism and economic opportunities. Additionally, the Zanzibar International Marathon and many other cultural and sporting events further cement the island’s status as a thriving hub for global festivals.

This award not only celebrates the successes of 2024 but also sets the stage for continued growth, inspiring Zanzibar to achieve even greater heights in tourism and cultural preservation.

Zanzibar Named Best Romantic Destination 2024 2.

In December 2024, Zanzibar was honoured as the Best Romantic Destination at the Travel + Leisure India’s Best Awards 2024. Renowned for its stunning beaches, luxurious resorts, and captivating sunsets, Zanzibar has solidified its reputation as a dream destination for couples and honeymooners. The island has also become a prime location for destination weddings, with high-profile celebrations such as the grand wedding on Bawe Island, attracting couples from around the world. Zanzibar continues to strive to be one of the top global wedding destinations, offering bespoke services and breathtaking settings that make it the perfect choice for couples looking to celebrate their love in an unforgettable way.

TZanzibar Hosted Inaugural Tourism & Investment Show:

he official opening ceremony of Zanzibar's first-ever Tourism & Investment Show, officiated by H.E. Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, President of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, marked a significant milestone in promoting the island as a prime destination for tourism and investment. Held in October, this landmark event was a testament to the power of public-private partnerships, which played a key role in organizing the show.

Paved the Way for

The event brought together over 250 exhibitors from around the world to Zanzibar and featured a series of workshops aimed at raising awareness among tourism stakeholders about the importance of sustainable tourism, investment opportunities in Zanzibar, inbound travel insurance, and heritage conservation. During the ceremony, President Mwinyi emphasized Zanzibar’s commitment to fostering economic growth, promoting sustainability, enhancing infrastructure, and creating a business-friendly environment to attract both local and international investors.

3rd Workshop on Greener Zanzibar: Advancing Sustainable Tourism Across the Island 4.

The 3rd Workshop on Greener Zanzibar continued its mission to promote sustainable tourism, showcasing innovative ideas and ongoing efforts to create an eco-friendlier tourism industry in Zanzibar. Already held in the Northern Region, East Coast Region, and Urban West Region, the workshop has gathered key stakeholders to share insights and strategies.

Next, the focus will shift to the Pemba Region, where the aim is to raise awareness among local tourism stakeholders about the importance of sustainability. By continuing these workshops, the initiative seeks to empower communities, promote eco-tourism, and ensure Zanzibar remains a top sustainable destination for global travellers.

PROMOTING SPORT TOURISM

ZCT and Yanga SC Unite to Promote Zanzibar Tourism

TThe Zanzibar Commission for Tourism (ZCT) and Young Africans SC partnered to promote domestic and regional tourism, highlighting the significant role of sports in driving tourism growth. This collaboration was first initiated during the CAF match between Yanga FC and CBE FC from Ethiopia, held at the New Amaani Complex in Zanzibar in September 2024. Following the match, the team’s management visited the ZCT office and met with

the Executive Secretary, Mr. Arif Abbas, to discuss a long-term partnership. These discussions focused on leveraging the team’s international diversity and visibility to position Zanzibar as a leading tourism destination. To solidify this commitment, ZCT proudly sponsored the team during the CAF Championship, which commenced in November 2024, showcasing the Commission’s dedication to integrating sports into its tourism strategies.

This partnership represents a strategic move to enhance Zanzibar’s appeal as a destination by capitalizing on Yanga’s extensive regional and continental reach. The initiative aims to utilize the team’s matches and influence to attract visitors while strengthening Zanzibar’s reputation as a premier hub for both leisure and sports tourism. Through such collaborations, ZCT continues to innovate and explore new avenues to expand the island’s visibility and tourism potential.

Zanzibar Hosts Successful 2nd International Kitesurf Regatta to Boost Sports Tourism 6.

The Zanzibar Commission for Tourism, in collaboration with the Zanzibar National Sports Council, hosted the 2nd International Kitesurf Regatta, the “Zanzibar Cup 2024 –KUSi,” on August 24th, 2024, at Kiwengwa Beach. The event, one of the key initiatives to promote sports tourism in Zanzibar, attracted 33 participants, including 8 international kite surfers.

Dr. Aboud Jumbe, the Principal Secretary of the Ministry of Tourism and Heritage, served as the Guest of

Honor, presenting the first-place prize of $3,000 to the winner from Italy, with the second and third-place prizes awarded to participants from Zanzibar.

In his remarks, Dr. Jumbe emphasized that sports tourism, one of the five key priorities in promoting Zanzibar as a premier tourism destination, plays a crucial role in positioning the region on the global tourism map.

The aim of the Bonanza was to create a friendly tourism environment in Pemba, promoting both sports and halal tourism on the island. As part of Pemba's ongoing efforts to

enhance its tourism offerings, the event attracted local and international visitors, further establishing the island as a premier destination for cultural and sports tourism.

Zanzibar Hosts the First-Ever Halal Tourism Exhibition to Boost Global Appeal

The Zanzibar Commission for Tourism proudly hosted the Halal Tourism Exhibition on October 13th, 2024, at the stunning Hotel Verde – Azam Luxury

& Spa.

This groundbreaking event came at a time when halal tourism is experiencing a global surge, offering Zanzibar a unique opportunity to establish itself as a top halal tourism destination. The exhibition was followed by a workshop featuring 16 expert panellists from across the globe, including the UK, Croatia, Qatar, South Africa, Indonesia, USA, Tanzania, and Zanzibar.

The discussions focused on the future of halal tourism, emphasizing that halal tourism is more than just halal-certified food, accommodations, and travel services. It encompasses a cultural experience that aligns with the values and needs of Muslim travellers. The event gained even more significance with the arrival of Mufti Menk in Zanzibar, further underscoring the island's commitment to embracing and promoting halal tourism.

DESTINATION SHOWCASES

Zanzibar Made History at International Tourism Expo in France! 9.

For the first time, the Zanzibar Commission for Tourism participated in the prestigious IFTM - TOP RESA tourism expo in France, marking a significant milestone on the global tourism stage. Held from September 17 to 19, 2024, this event was a collaborative effort with 16 stakeholders from Zanzibar and mainland Tanzania, united to promote Zanzibar as a premier destination. France remains one of Zanzibar’s top tourism markets, supported by the convenience of direct flights from Paris to Zanzibar, operating twice a week, which continues to facilitate increased tourist arrivals.

The expo provided an excellent platform to showcase Zanzibar’s unmatched beauty, culture, and hospitality. It underscored the importance of engaging with key stakeholders to solidify Zanzibar’s reputation in France and attract even more visitors, reinforcing the island’s position as a sought-after destination in Europe.

Zanzibar Shines at ITOP Forum 10.

Strengthening Ties with Oman at Business and Investment Forum 11.

ZCT participated in the prestigious Business and Investment Forum held in Oman. This significant event brought together the Tanzanian diaspora, investors from Oman, and other neighbouring countries in the Middle East. ZCT seized the opportunity to position Zanzibar as a premier destination for Halal and Heritage Tourism. Co-organized by Tanzania and Oman, the forum marked a pivotal step in strengthening cultural and economic ties while showcasing Zanzibar's beauty and rich heritage on a global stage.

Tantalizing Tanzania Film Unveiled in India 12.

In December 2024, the tourism promotional film Tantalizing Tanzania, featuring Indian artist Shakti Mohan and highlighting the Serengeti, Ngorongoro, and Zanzibar, was officially launched in Mumbai, India. The event was graced by Tanzania's Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism, Hon. Dr. Pindi Chana, and Zanzibar's Minister of Tourism and Heritage, Hon. Mudrik Ramadhan Soraga. Also present was the Executive Secretary of ZCT, Mr. Arif Abbas, who represented Zanzibar during this landmark occasion.

position Tanzania as a premier destination for Indian tourists, showcasing its breathtaking landscapes and unique cultural heritage. Zanzibar, which has become increasingly popular in India, also made headlines recently by winning The Best Romantic Island Destination at the Travel and Leisure – India’s Best Award 2024. This prestigious recognition further cements Zanzibar’s status as a top destination for honeymooners and couples.

DOMESTIC OUTREACH EFFORTS

Mwaka Kogwa Festival Celebration 2024 13.

The Mwaka Kogwa Festival celebration of 2024 took place in the vibrant village of Makunduchi, located in the lush, fertile southern corner of Zanzibar, known for its rich culture and history.

Held annually in July, the Mwaka Kogwa Festival, which dates back to the 19th century, originated with the Shirazi settlers during the Omani control of Zanzibar. The festival celebrates the community's strength and prosperity, serving as a time for strengthening connections and coming together in solidarity.

This unique and deeply rooted tradition offered a fascinating glimpse

into the heart of Makunduchi. The festival attracted many visitors to Zanzibar, who were eager to witness this spectacular event and immerse themselves in the vibrant local culture.

ZCT and TTB Partner for a Spectacular "UTALII DAY" at Kizimkazi Festival 14.

On the 21st of August 2024, the Zanzibar Commission for Tourism (ZCT) and the Tanzania Tourism Board (TTB) teamed up to host a special "UTALII DAY" during the Kizimkazi Festival. The event featured a variety of exciting activities, including a thrilling cycling race, a race for people with disabilities, and an unforgettable night of traditional cultural dances.

These performances showcased the rich cultural heritage of both Tanzania and Zanzibar, highlighting the unique traditional dances that form an essential part of the region's identity. This vibrant celebration underscored the importance of cultural tourism while offering visitors a chance to experience the true essence of Zanzibar.

15. ZCT and Arusha Partner to Promote Tourism through Strategic Collaboration 15.

In early October 2024, the Zanzibar Commission for Tourism (ZCT) visited Arusha to introduce the first-ever Tourism and Investment Show, held in Zanzibar on October 25-26, 2024. During this visit, a strategic partnership was established to promote tourism across both regions.

This collaboration focuses on leveraging the unique strengths of Zanzibar’s

beach tourism and Arusha’s wildlife and cultural attractions. The partnership aims to enhance joint marketing efforts, create synergies between the two regions, and attract more visitors, ultimately boosting Tanzania’s tourism sector as a whole. This collaboration marks a significant step towards a united approach to tourism promotion in Tanzania.

Shining at SiTE: A Landmark Moment for Tourism Promotion 16.

The ZCT was thrilled to participate in the Swahili International Tourism Expo (SiTE) at Mlimani City, organized by the Tanzania Tourist Board, alongside leading tourism stakeholders, to promote Zanzibar as a top destination. The expo, which took place from October 11th to 13th, 2024, provided a valuable platform for networking, investment opportunities, and showcasing the unique appeal of Zanzibar. This initiative was a key step in promoting Zanzibar domestically, further solidifying its position as a must-visit destination. Tourism professionals and key stakeholders actively participated, making it a historic moment for Zanzibar's tourism sector. Zanzibar is now more than ever calling for global attention!

ENGAGEMENT INITIATIVES

Brazilian Delegation for Familiarization Trip to Zanzibar 17.

ZCT welcomed a delegation of 13 agents and representatives from Brazilian media outlets on the 31st of August for a familiarization trip to explore the beauty of Zanzibar and connect with key stakeholders. The delegation, received by the Principal Secretary of the Ministry of Tourism and Heritage, Dr. Aboud Jumbe, spent four days on the island. During their stay, they engaged in B2B meetings with the Zanzibar Association of Tourism Investors (ZATO) and embarked on tours to experience the unique charm of

Zanzibar. These initiatives are all part of efforts to diversify Zanzibar's tourism market and attract more Brazilian tourists to the island, strengthening the ties between Zanzibar and Brazil.

World Tourism Day 2024: Empowering Zanzibar's Tourism Sector 18.

In commemoration of World Tourism Day, celebrated annually on September 27 with the theme "Tourism and Peace," two separate training sessions were held on September 22, 2024. The first session, aimed at developing technical and soft skills for ‘Zanzibar Tourism Ambassadors,’ targeted youth and the tourism diplomatic police. The guest of honor for this session was Prof. Mohamed H. Khalfan, CEO of the Zanzibar Presidential Delivery Bureau (ZPDB), and it was led by Mr. Milan Divecha, an international trainer certified by the International Labour Organization (ILO).

The second training, conducted in collaboration with the Zanzibar Association of Tourism Operators (ZATO), focused on enhancing professional skills within the tourism sector.

Zanzibar Welcomed TUI! 19.

On November 4th, TUI’s first flight from Amsterdam landed in Zanzibar, warmly received by Fisherman Tour. Now flying twice a week, nearly 300 travellers were able to reach our island paradise with each flight. Europe remains one of the leading markets, from which we receive the most tourists.

Zanzibar Should Have Soundproof Music Regulations:

ZCT and BASSFU Act on Noise Complaints

On the night of Sunday, November 3, 2024, the management of the Zanzibar Commission for Tourism (ZCT) and the Arts, Culture, and Film Censorship Board (BASSFU) conducted a special inspection operation. This operation targeted venues and establishments that played open music without proper soundproofing equipment, in response to complaints submitted by residents about noise disturbances.

The operation was a direct result of the MoU signed during the First Tourism and Investment Show,

witnessed by the President of Zanzi bar and the Revolutionary Council. Actions taken included confiscating sound equipment from locations violating music regulations and imposing fines on the offenders. This initiative is part of a continuous effort to ensure compliance with music regulations. ZCT will make sure that all establishments follow the proper rules and regulations for such businesses to maintain peace, order, and community well-being.

Empowering Communities Through Tourism: ZCT and ZEEA Unite 22.

On September 20, 2024, during the official opening of “Fahari ya Zanzibar “in Dimani, the Zanzibar Commission for Tourism (ZCT) and the Zanzibar Economic Empowerment Agency (ZEEA) signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The historic occasion was graced by the President of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, as the guest of honour.

Key Highlights of the MoU:

Collaboration for Community Benefits: A framework to ensure local communities directly benefit from the tourism industry.

Promoting Local Culture: Integration of local products and services into the tourism value chain, providing tourists with an authentic experience while boosting the local economy.

Entrepreneur Training: Capacity-building initiatives to empower local entrepreneurs and businesses to meet industry standards.

Joint Projects: Collaborative efforts to enhance the visibility and marketability of local products in the tourism sector.

This partnership aims to link tourism with community empowerment and cultural preservation, marking a significant step toward strengthening the local economy.

A 15% increase in visitor arrivals was recorded, from 638,498 visitors in 2023 to 736,755 in 2024. This remarkable growth is attributed to various international promotion strategies, the ease of obtaining visas for visitors, and Zanzibar's reputation as a safe and welcoming destination. Europe remains a strong contributor, with countries like Italy, Germany, and France leading the way in tourist arrivals.

Zanzibar to Host Trace Music Awards & Summit 2025

The Ministry of Tourism and Heritage, in partnership with the Zanzibar Commission for Tourism, is thrilled to announce that Zanzibar will be the ultimate stage for the Trace Music Awards & Summit from February 24-26, 2025! This incredible event will be hosted in collaboration with The Mora Hotel.

The official announcement was made during a press conference on September 30, 2024, at The Mora hotels, with special appearances from Hon. Mudrik R. Soraga, Minister of Tourism and Heritage, and Olivier Laouchez, Co-Founder & CEO of Trace.

Zanzibar to Host Aviadev Conference in 2025!

Zanzibar is set to welcome 11–13 June 2025, following the official launch by Hon. Mhe. Dkt. Khalid S. Mohamed, Infrastructure, Communication, and Transport. The event, expected to attract from the airline industry, tourism boards, and airport authorities, aims to create new opportunities for tourism development by bringing together airlines to discuss and establish new routes.

This exciting initiative, spearheaded by the Zanzibar Commission for Tourism (ZCT) Zanzibar Airports Authority (ZAA), pivotal role in strengthening Zanzibar's connectivity and expanding its global tourism reach.
