Restarting as a priority The time has come for a new start. Understood as a need for escape, need for lightness, perhaps just a longing for normalcy, which, in our industry, is slowly taking place thanks to the reopening of amusement parks all over the world, in the last few months.

Restarting as a priority in a scenario that has led the company, over 2020, to look back and to look at itself: in a period of uncertainty, our values have indeed represented a compass to guide us more and more towards change and innovation.

Zamperla’s tradition, its history, which this year has celebrated 55 candles, and our value system are playing a key role in identifying the new paths to take and innovating within tradition, rather than considering past and future as antitheses.

In recent months we have had to rewrite the pact between the company and the individual, we have asked for flexibility, changing our work habits, we have focused on internal change from a blended and increasingly phygital perspective, receiving an attentive and proactive response from our teams.

Never before have we been so aware of the impact that innovation and scientific and technological progress could have on our safety, our work, and our health. Never before has our company felt how much a different scenario can affect the development of our projects.

A new start, therefore, but with greater awareness, with clear and defined objectives and a driving force aimed at innovation. Because in this year our know-how combined with the rediscovery of social-emotional goals gives us new hope and vision for the future.

Zamperla is preparing for the restart of the industry by investing 3000 hours in training since January, with massive updating of technical skills in the areas of hydraulics, pneumatics, and mechanics for both assembly operators and designers, bringing them to a higher level of technical awareness.

“The entire production staff has welcomed the several courses held during this period with enthusiasm and interest,” commented Enrico Marcolin, Production Manager.

“Thanks to the passion, commitment, and expertise of the teachers, we have consolidated and expanded our knowledge in the mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic fields, enabling us to be even more effective in the creation of attractions for our customers.”

A lot of content was delivered by our professionals, who, although not being lecturers by profession, were very good. The contribution of Vittorio Babini, Engineering Director, for the teaching on mechanics was significant and of added value, thanks to his ability to give numerous examples of technical problems that operators encounter during assembly and that often result from a lack of definition of the drawings, demonstrating the usefulness of the continuous comparison between Engineering and Production, dedicating a lot of time to his colleagues in the classroom. The same has been done by Valentino Salionti and Andrea Nassi on the analysis of functional risk related to machines and the level of performance, Emanuele Malin on the implications of UNI EN 13814:2019 for product quality, Elisa Dall’Alba, Matteo Montagnin, and Federico Rizzetto, who continue to train younger colleagues in the use of Adams software. A great team of professionals of whom we are proud, not only for their competence but also for the dedication and passion they have put into this project, at the service of their colleagues.

Our training also focuses on transversal competencies such as customer service, with the involvement of the technical and commercial team of after-sales services and project managers, and leadership development, to support a value-driven organizational culture, which is increasingly focused on collaboration, shared responsibility, and openness to new ideas.

The health emergency has not stopped us.

We are committed to providing continuity in both technical and transversal training, so that our people are prepared to deal with more complex and evolving scenarios, to provide our customers with the best possible service and expertise.

EMOLITION ERBY ROCK

A certified classic Zamperla family ride, the Demolition Derby has entertained millions of riders at parks all around the world.

The triple spinning action provides excitement. The basic Demolition Derby structure is composed of two circular platforms that rotate at a speed of 10 rpm move the six vehicles from one to the other along a figure-eight-shaped path. Each vehicle can accommodate 2 adults and 2 children and allows riders to spin themselves making for a wild ride.

EVERY SINGLE VERSION COULD BE REPLICATED IN A DOUBLE DESIGN TO BE PAIRED TO EACH OTHER.

7 ISSUE 04 We want to dedicate an article about this evergreen because during the years this ride has become more and more popular in many parks, thanks also to the ability of our engineers to reinvent, and reproject it to let it fit larger and smaller locations, outdoor and indoor venues, adapting itself for every single park needs. Indeed, the classic version of the Demolition Derby is the two turntables model, the smallest of the family, now our catalog can offer a three or four turntables design, but that’s not all: every single version could be replicated in a double design to be paired to each other.

After so many years the Demolition Derby remains between the most required attractions, and beyond the dimensions, another element of differentiation is for sure the theming, which is so evident and captivating in this ride.

Our Artistic Dept can create the most attractive storytelling around this attraction thanks to its experience with this ride model that is now available in more than 60 (but is not limited to). High capacity and great excitement make this ride a must-have attraction for all parks.

A NEW ZAMPERLA COASTER FOR A HEART POUNDING FUN

We were proud to introduce one of our most innovative coaster concepts, the Double Heart Lightning.

We are offering this attraction in two models, 70 and 50 meters tall.

The exhilarating experience begins with the first of three launches, which accelerates forward.

After a moment of airtime at the top the train falls backwards and is accelerated a second time.

The third LSM launch takes the train up and over the top. Riders catch their beath as they experience at airtime pop atop the structure before twisting and diving down a vertical drop.

The experience ends with two inversions, an Immelman and a Dive Loop.

The coaster is next-level for us from several different perspectives. Both the 50 and 70-meter models represent the tallest roller coasters we have conceptualized and designed. In addition,

they utilize our new Lightning trains. These debuted at the Orlando IAAPA Expo in 2019, but like many products from that time the news got lost with COVID-19 rearing its head just a few months later.

The trains constitute our new thrill platform and will be utilized on many of our forthcoming designs. For the Double Heart, we are proposing a few different seating configurations depending upon a client’s budget and capacity requirements.

These include one 12 or 16-passenger train for the 50-meter version and one or two 16-passenger trains on the 70-meter version. The latter will utilize a turntable for multiple train operation.

In addition the vehicle design allows for generous spacing, which allows our clients to achieve our theoretical capacities in real world operations.

The Lightning trains are fantastic for operators and riders alike. Parks are excited about the aluminum-milled chassis, which significantly reduces weight from our first-generation Thunderbolt trains.

In addition, the chassis now has minimal structural welds, which reduces offseason NDT labor and costs.

The seat and restraint are extremely comfortable.

The next-generation redundant restraint secures thrill seekers at the lap in order to accommodate a majority of potential riders. Like the rest of the vehicle we took cost of ownership into consideration for the design as we strived to minimize operating costs for everything from the seat padding to the bogies.

The Double Heart represents a significant step forward as we grow into a go-to roller coaster manufacturer.

Both models are a great marriage of a ride designed to come together at the intersection of marketability, ride experience, capacity and cost.

Zamperla is truly launching into 2021!

The coaster is next-level for us from several different perspectives.

Both models represent the tallest roller coasters we have conceptualized and designed.

In addition, they utilize our new Lightning trains.

10 PRODUCT LAUNCHES IN 10 MONTHS AND EVERY HALF OF THE MONTH WE PRESENT A WEEK FULL OF SURPRISES AND SPECIAL PROJECTS, A REGULAR EVENT TO DISCOVER A BRAND-NEW ZAMPERLA ATTRACTION THROUGH THE END OF 2021.

The fourth stop of our parade sees the launch of Pump&Jumpz, the first interactive bouncing tower that combines airtime, drops and amazing bounces.

Pump&Jumpz is the perfect attraction to have fun and create unique memories with all the family, thanks to its special features and colorful thematizations.

Here are some technical details: the 2.5 rpm spinning tower adds a twist to the ride experience alternating it with incredible bounces thanks to our proven, reliable and clean pneumatic system.

The attraction is equipped with a state-of-theart lap bar and the capacity is customizable: from 4 to 6 pairs of seats.

Z-Funweek is a digital project created to connect people, continuing to actively engage our community, and showcasing the challenging work we have done over the past year to get people to amusement parks as soon as possible!

But the best is yet to come! Before the end of 2021, Z-Funweek will see also the launch of no less than three new roller coasters...

Charlotte Coates Blooloop There is no denying that the past 18 months or so have been challenging for the attractions industry. But it has also been a difficult time for theme park fans, families and everyone who needed a place to spend some quality time together, as parks large and small around the world have been forced to close their door for long periods of time. Experts predicted a surge of visits once restrictions began to ease, due to pent-up demand. But is this proving to be the case once the gates open again? And for those who are now able to visit a theme park, how does the experience compare to a pre-COVID visit?

It has already been a disrupted season for many, with changing restrictions and fluctuating infection rates meaning that opening dates have shifted to much later in the year than usual. However, those operators who have been able to reopen are now reporting that visitors are back, and keen to enjoy the magic of a theme park or amusement park once more.

For example, attractions in the UK were able to reopen on 12 April and, subsequently, prebooked slots at fan favourites such as Alton Towers, Blackpool Pleasure Beach and Paultons Park filled up fast.

More countries are now beginning to relax the rules too. For instance, parks in Germany began reopening at the end of May, parks in Italy reopened on 15 June, and in France on 17 June.

Meanwhile in California, Disneyland finally reopened in April after being closed for an entire year and demand was so high that the booking website was overwhelmed, with tickets for the

opening day selling out within hours. So, is there hope for a good season after all, despite the capacity limits that may remain? The general feeling is that guests are happy to be back at their favourite parks. One recent visitor to the UK’s Thorpe Park said: “It was great to be back in the park after 18 months and enjoy the coasters again! The attraction had clear safety protocols in place around the park, like social distancing markers, hand sanitizer stations, more ride cleaning and mobile ordering. These measures meant we felt safe returning to the park.”

However, the post-COVID experience is not the same as it was before. Capacity management, and other new health and safety regulations are likely to be the norm for a while yet, and it is how attractions approach these that can make or break a visit from the guest point of view. As they reopen, parks need to build trust with visitors and making sure to communicate their new procedures is key. For instance, visitors will be looking for a venue that puts health and safety first. Having clear COVID-19 safety measures outlined on their website and through their marketing channels will help theme parks and amusement parks to attract guests, at the decision making stage.

Other measures, like contactless payments, capacity management, mobile food and beverage ordering, and virtual queuing will not only help keep guests safe, but will also streamline their visit for an improved experience. With less time spent in queues for tickets, food or rides, visitors can spend more time enjoying the park and making memories together. There are benefits for operators too, as pre-booked slots allow them to spread their capacity more evenly, and knowing in advance exactly how many guests to expect helps them to plan staffing and inventory more efficiently. Plus, when visitors aren’t spending their time waiting in line for rides or experiences, they are free to browse merchandise and buy refreshments, increasing the spend-per-head.

So yes, the experience of visiting a theme park or amusement park has changed in the wake of the pandemic. But perhaps, as attractions embrace new technology, it will have done so for the better.

LUNA PARK IN CONEY ISLAND, THE FUN SWINGS BACK (PART 1) Our much-loved Luna Park in Coney Island has reopened on April 9th and we all have been very thrilled for the event, marking a moment of hope for our industry. Having been shuttered for 2020, Zamperla iconic park is back, albeit with a 33 percent capacity limit and COVID-19 measures in place.

“It is incredibly exciting to finally have Luna Park in Coney Island filled with guests and joy after a very challenging year,” said Alessandro Zamperla, President and CEO of Central Amusement International Inc.” We are tremendously grateful for all of our frontline workers, the heroes who have saved countless lives and continue to help our community heal; for all of our team members who have been waiting since October 2019 to welcome back our guests; and for our community that is so vibrant and resilient.”

deployed hand sanitization systems on every ride and sanitization procedures in the most frequently used and frequented areas.

Thanks to innovative systems based on the use of artificial intelligence, we can be aware of any crowded situations and intervene in real-time to maintain the highest safety standards. All this to get back to the excitement that we are capable of and that we have been doing with enthusiasm and passion for more than 50 years. Our internal studies, the latest of which was carried out by Dr. Stefania Cerino, a specialist in psychiatry and clinical criminology, tell us that, as happened with superheroes during the Great American Depres-

sion in the 1930s, amusement parks can be a valid help in contrasting post-traumatic stress disorder resulting from the Covid19 pandemic. We are ready and will do our utmost to show people that it is possible to have fun again, in strict compliance with safety measures.”

The Luna Park has also introduced six new attractions for children, ranging from swings and coasters to racing games. The new rides include Circus Candy, Fire Patrol, Rainbowheel, AeroMax, Grand Prix, and Mini Mouse.

We are getting back to delivering emotions, something that Zamperla can do and has been doing with enthusiasm and passion for 55 years!

The April 2021 issue of “The New Yorker” celebrated the opening of Luna Park with a cover artwork by the Italian cartoonist and illustrator Lorenzo Mattotti. The backdrop for the couple is the famous Wonder Wheel, which turned one hundred years old in 2020 and whose celebrations had been postponed due to the pandemic.

Now finally also Italy has been able reopen the doors of its amusement parks and we, at Zamperla, are thrilled to go back again to our beloved Luna Farm, from 18 June.

Luna Farm is the first farm-themed family park open all year round and based on an original concept developed by Team Park Project. The park, located inside FICO Eataly World, is a particularly important project for Zamperla: it is the first fully accessible farm-themed park, a place where even people with different disabilities can experience the magic of the rides.

My job has been giving me great satisfactions: what I appreciate the most is the opportunity to interact daily with cultures other than my own, from the most distant, such as Japanese or Vietnamese, to the closest, such as Australian and New Zealand. My constant goal is to provide the best solutions possible to address my clients’ needs.

It is paramount to be flexible and adaptable to keep up with the times.
