By Research Department Part one Black licorice for smooth feet. Let’s face it, black licorice is the devil’s candy. It’s sometimes difficult to eat, and has a really specific flavor that some people can’t come to grips with. Nobody really needs that stash from Halloween last year, so we are here to help you put it to good use. Your tongue may not love it, but your feet will say thank you to black licorice, especially if you suffer from calluses and corns. Estrogen is present in licorice which helps to smooth out the rough areas and soften the feet. Just grind them up and apply the paste on affected area. ACV for hangovers After a night of partying and fun, it’s hard to come back to your senses and sober up the morning after. Here’s when a shot of apple cider vinegar will jolt you to your senses. Let’s be honest, the smell itself can wake up anybody in a deep sleep. For this reason, its highly recommended to mix with water! Dilute a tablespoon of it in a glass of water, and have it first thing when you wake up in the morning. It is a natural diuretic which helps eliminate toxins from the body. All of this greatly helps after a night of drinks. A jar of olives on the drive. If you are some one that suffers from motion sickness and travels often, or are planning a long road trip, you should carry a jar of olives with you to help combat the problem. This may seem like a bizarre remedy, but it apparently really works. Besides, you can always use olives for martinis if you decide to stop and have a party. The salty taste of them is good for an upset stomach and nausea, while the tannins found in olives dry out the mouth, decreasing salivation which helps with vomiting. Yams for menopause symptoms. If you are going through menopause and want to save yourself from some not so fun signs and symptoms of it, you should increase your intake of yams. Well, if you are familiar with the movie, Sex and the City, you might already be aware of this

home remedy. Let’s us shed some light for those who don’t. Yams are filled with Vitamin C and high in antioxidants, so they help with many symptoms of menopause, and might even help with your libido. They are also super delicious so you can prepare many meals with them too. Garlic has a distinct smell, so you’ll probably prefer to keep away from it when you have annoying allergies and a bad case of the sneezes. But it’s actually quite healthy for you, and is a proven remedy to cure a stuffy nose because of its anti-inflammatory properties. Garlic is a natural decongestant and should be kept in mind during allergy season. If you crush the garlic cloves while smelling it, it helps release stubborn mucus that blocks up the nose, making it hard to breathe. Once you get better and recover, keep it around to scare off vampires. The tennis ball it could turn in to an awkward dance move, but we allow you to go crazy with it. Rolling a tennis ball under your feet actually helps foot pain after a long day of standing or walking around. It is kind of like a mini foot massage to relax your feet. Besides the occasional foot aches, it is also helpful in more serious conditions, such as plantar fasciitis, which is an extremely painful foot condition. All you need to do is place a smooth tennis ball under your feet on a flat surface, and roll it around to release pressure. If you have brittle nails that are prone to breakage and can just never grow out, get some vegetable oil and see its magic work on your nails. This tip is for you if you want a deep moisturizer to prevent further breakage. Please Note: We will continue for September and October to list more Weird Remedies for you information. Yes We Can suggestion you contact your personal Care Provider if you have questions about these remedies.

To School In Person By Lizzy Ross - A first year college student

This month, school districts across L.A. County are planning to start hybrid learning should remain at least 3 feet apart from each while also wearing face masks at school. for elementary school students. Several districts have already been offering in-person However, middle and high school students in areas with high rates of COVID-19 classes for weeks now. infections should stay at least 6 feet apart--especially if they aren't able to stay in small groups throughout the school day. Teachers and staff also should remain 6 feet apart And while many parents and students are excited, the transition back to school can from students and each other, limit in-person meetings, and avoid areas such as staff involve some stress. It also anxiety but things can be done to soothe the anxiety lounges. To prevent the spread of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, there are a number of safety steps schools should take. By Lizzy Ross – First Year College Student Looking at the future, teens were asked how the pandemic has affected their values and long-term goals. Adolescence is a key time when identity develops, certain values are prioritized, and some forge lives of purpose in which they commit to long-term, meaningful, other-serving projects. Although the pandemic has restricted access to many of the activities and roles that typically serve as vehicles for identity development (for example, after-school activities, jobs, time with friends), it has also introduced opportunities for reflection and independent thinking. “I think the crisis has strengthened my awareness so I can act on my values,” remarked Connor. “I have so much time to think for myself and reflect, and I find that I’m not spending energy trying to pretend I’m someone I’m not.” The slowed pace afforded by the pandemic also led Aislyn in a reflective direction: “What’s really going to make me happy in life is the emotional meaning of what success looks like, rather than the material aspects of success. I think I have a less clear picture of what my future

looks like, but I have a better sense of what my future will feel like.” Other adolescents shared Aislyn’s sense of the heightened importance of social and emotional meaning. Zoya shared that the pandemic has increased how much she values friendship, and it has increased Devyn’s desire to help people: “My goal to be a marine biologist set me up to not have to deal with people too much, but now I kind of want to teach it, or mentor it, or share it with people.” No one can deny the hardships that the pandemic presents for adolescents. But at least for some it may also present opportunities that accelerate the development of purpose and the enactment of their values, particularly when caring adults provide support and encouragement without stealing the spotlight. Adolescents want adults to be forward-looking yet realistic with them. In part, that realism must entail seeing their strengths, appreciating their idealism, and embracing their capacities to contribute to a better world.

TURMERIC HELPS FIGHT 10 CONDITIONS From boosting memory to alleviating pain and inflammation, turmeric, a root similar to gingerroot, has been shown to help a whole host of health issues. The delicious, brilliant-yellow-colored curry spice deserves a place in your daily diet thanks to its many health-boosting benefits. Here are some of the many reasons to eat more turmeric: TENDONITIS – Turmeric contains a potent compound that, not only gives it its signature yellow color, but also its anti-inflammatory properties. In a study published in the Journal of Biological Chemistry, researchers found that curcumin improved the healing of tendonitis, which involves inflammation of the tendons that help maintain our structural integrity. That’s great news for anyone suffering from tendonitis, whether from a tennis or golf injury or gardening. URINARY TRACT INFECTIONS – Recent research in the Journal of International Molecular Sciences found that curcumin helps to prevent kidney stones from forming in the urinary tract. It appears to prevent them from crystallizing in the first place. Considering the painful nature of kidney stones, anything that helps prevent their formation should be well-received. MEMORY BOOSTING – You’ve probably heard of curcumin’s benefits for memory, but you might not realize just how quickly it starts working. Research published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology showed that within only one hour after taking a supplement containing one of turmeric’s active ingredients, curcumin, study participants had a significant improvement in memory and attention tasks compared to the placebo group.

5

ALZHEIMER’S PROTECTION – Research shows that the curcumin may even help to protect the brain against the plaque-formation found in Alzheimer’s disease. It seems to work by preventing the formation of beta-amyloid plaques—which are key factors in Alzheimer’s disease. Even Alzheimer’s patients who exhibited severe symptoms, including dementia, irritability, agitation, anxiety, and apathy, had excellent therapeutic results when taking curcumin, according to another study published in the Japanese medical journal known as Ayu. In that study participants had significant memory improvements when they supplemented with 764 milligrams of turmeric that contained 100 mg of curcumin, every day for a year. PROSTATE CANCER – Turmeric shows promise against prostate cancer. In a study published in the medical journal Precision Oncology, researchers found that compounds in turmeric, as well as others found in apples and grapes, starved and shrunk prostate cancer tumors. While more research needs to be done on this promising research, it certainly offers hope for sufferers of prostate cancer. And, considering that turmeric is, not only safe, but also offers many other health benefits, it is worth considering in the prevention and treatment of the disease PARKINSON’S DISEASE – Turmeric also offers promise in the treatment of Parkinson’s disease, a degenerative neurological disorder that is characterized by impaired motor functions and shaking. In a study published in Experimental and Therapeutic Medicine, researchers found that turmeric may protect the nervous system from the toxins involved in causing the nervous system degeneration in Parkinson’s disease. COLON CANCER PREVENTION AND TREATMENT –

YESWECANNEWSPAPER.COM

Curcumin not only shows benefits for prostate cancer, but it has also been found in multiple studies to reduce colon cancer risk. In one study published in Cancer Prevention Research, researchers found that curcumin suppressed the ability of colon cancer cells to proliferate, suggesting it may be beneficial in preventing and treating the disease. OSTEOARTHRITIS – In a study published in the journal Clinical Interventions in Aging, researchers found that turmeric was as effective as ibuprofen in the treatment of osteoarthritis of the knees. DIABETES – Research in the medical journal Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine found that turmeric can help regulate blood sugars as well as neuropathy and other problems linked to diabetes. OBESITY – If you’re having trouble losing weight you might want to consider adding more turmeric to your diet and supplementing with curcumin. That’s because research in the journal Biofactors found that the spice alleviated the inflammation isolated as a cause in overweight and obesity. It not only helped with obesity, it helped to protect against some of the health-damaging effects of obesity. You can add the spice turmeric to your soups, smoothies, stews, and curries; however, if you’re suffering from a serious health condition like those above you may benefit from higher doses of curcumin. Ideally, choose a standardized extract of curcumin. Follow package directions for the product you select. A typical supplementary dose is 400 mg per day, but discuss it with your doctor prior to use.

By Contributor Today, as lockdowns ease and “socializing” beckons, we must collectively assess the state of our friendships, rinse them off, see where we are. The future of friendships is… uncertain. We have spent so much time over the past year alone that many of us have forgotten how to be with other people. We have crystallized, a brittle and sugary shell having grown around the limbs we once used for touching each other in playful pats. The longcultivated skills, the asking after parents, the carrying on listening even when a story appears to have broken off and ambled down a muddy and quite dull path, the correct amount of time to hold eye contact, all these must be learned again. Even if we have not been alone, we have spent so much time with only the other half of our couple that we now only communicate in coded grunts. “Is the…?” “Yeah. Are you…?” “Mmm.” We must learn to communicate again like humans. Having evolved to relate to our fellow animals through watching for facial signals that we can process as loving or dangerous – a violent flicker in their eye when they tell you it’ll be absolutely no problem for you to borrow their favorite pan, an epic novel in the quick look away when you ask if they like your new girlfriend – a year with only digital interactions has dulled our senses. It’s no wonder so many previously stable people have found themselves wobbling after an inscrutable text exchange, or storming out of WhatsApp groups with all the swoosh of a velvet coat. How many of us have read between the lines of a message about what our friend is having for lunch and found evidence that they have never respected our life choices and indeed, as suspected, hate us, and then sat with that melancholy sense until it has thickened into a custard-like film that will forever coat this friendship? When, actually, the friend had just been distracted by their penne boiling over? If they take an hour to respond to a message, they’re allowing just enough time for you to list every political disagreement between you, and then write a short play about the time you accidentally insulted their baby. Another blow came with the concept of the “support bubble”. For the

I have always been concerned about the dangers of bug repellents and deet. I try to avoid using them if it is possible and found using essential oils will usually keep them at bay. Being the antique lover that I am, I wanted to use my gorgeous blue vintage mason jars. These were used as centerpieces at my beach wedding so I could not think of a sweeter reminder to have around the yard. The combination of colors is just gorgeous and the bug repellent is working wonders. As far as how long the Bug repellent Luminaries will last, well It depends on your candles. I keep extra candles on hand so if I see one is getting low, swap it out. The liquid will stay full for quite some time. I do take the time to clean jars and add new water and oil mixture to ensure it stays fresh and potent for bugs lingering in our area. Essential oils are great for all types of things in and around your home. From refreshing and cleansing the air to soothing sunburn. One area I found works is a big repellent luminary for outdoor entertaining. The mix of oils helps naturally repel flying mosquitos around the area you are enjoying! Essential Oils Work At Keeping Bugs Away? The Essential oils release fragrances that can naturally repel mosquitos. You will find certain oils like peppermint, citrus, etc. work great in repelling certain types of bugs. If you plan on entertaining this spring and summer, take a few minutes to make a few Luminaries! They are quick, easy, and effective ways to naturally repel pesky bugs. The herbs will help repel your bugs and offer a pretty element to your Luminaries!

As you can see within minutes you can make these bug repellent Luminaries! Make as many of as little as you want. Just make sure you make enough to cover the area you plan to entertain. Never leave your candles unattended, you don’t want to run the risk of them breaking and starting a fire. Just be aware when using these Luminaries. Bergamot sends them away. I use rosemary from my garden, lemon and water infused with a few drops of Bergamot. They not only are lovely to look at they smell amazing. We are in a drought this year. Not to many bugs. One advantage to a drought. Materials/ ingredients 2-8 oz Mason jars, 1-16 oz Mason jar, 40 drops rosemary essential oil, 1 lemon, 2 key limes or 1 lime, 8 fresh rosemary sprigs, 3 tea light candles, 32 oz water. Instructions: Slice limes and lemon. 1. Place 3-4 slices of lime and lemon in each Mason jar. 2. Place 4 rosemary sprigs in the large jar and 2 in each smaller jar. 3. Fill a measuring cup with 32 oz of water, add 40 drops of rosemary essential oil, and stir. 4. Pour water into Mason jars. 5. Take tea lights out of the silver containers and place them on top of the water. 6. Light candles, place the jars outside around the area you’re using, and watch your homemade bug repellent work wonders! If you can’t find floating candles in your stores, shop online! Amazon sells them and if you plan ahead, you could have delivered with next-day shipping or free 2-day shipping for Prime members! Also, generally they can be found at craft stores which are the best place to go. Good Luck and I hope you enjoy your beautiful piece of artwork and keeping the bugs away at the same time.

first time since we were five, we were forced to name our best friends. As well as being hideously embarrassing and opening schoolground wounds, those rankings have left scars. How to go forward from there? Or from the knowledge you were left out of a six-in-the-park meeting? Six-in-thepark-little-drink-nothing-fancy. Six-inthe-park-no-offence-just-a-last-minutething. Only-six-allowed-what-a-shamehope-you’re-well. The organizer, scarred, the seventh friend, scarred, the person who hears about it later and is forced then to quickly perform their own friendship algebra, scarred. We see what’s happening because we do it, too. Old friends have been packed away for winter, in favor of neighbors who take the same dog-walking route, or delivery men who complement our window box. We prioritized kindness and community over people who could recite, on cue, the story about when you almost wet yourself in Ikea, or knew who you fancied when you were 12. But part of the pain of the last year has been in not being seen, and therefore not quite existing. Many of us learned we only became real when recognized by people who cared about us. It may not be healthy but it was true – we lost S something then. As our rusting friendships creaked on across the pandemic, we started to absorb new drips of knowledge about people we thought we knew well. We saw how each reacted to life in their particular cul-de-sac of trauma, their little griefs, their locked-A down family, their lack of work or hacking cough and, sometimes, we learned things we didn’t like. They were not as resilient as we had imagined, as empathic, ambitious, or funny, or honest or odd. Great oceans appeared between us, whether through failures in communication or because of judgments on rule-breaking, or because the differences in our lives were suddenly exposed and raw. Do we unlearn them when things get better? Do we have time to analyze our responses to the knowledge and sand down our edges before we go outside? We will need to allow intimacy in, with all its unhygienic residue. Friendship will return, limping from war, and we must be prepared, with the kettle on.

Youth’s Corner & Spotlight HOW AND WHEN THE BIRTH OF RAP WAS BORN If you’ve let reading slide to the margins of your life, now is the time to bring it back. If you want to raise a reader, be a reader. Baby Books are a necessity, newborns benefit from the experience of hearing stories. You can read anything to a newborn: a cookbook, a dystopian novel, a parenting manual. The content doesn’t matter. What does matter is the sound of your voice, the cadence of the text and the words themselves. The language has to be live, in person and directed at the child, don’t feel limited, just be sure to enjoy yourself. Babies who are read to are learning that reading is fun and can involve all the senses: the feel of the pages, the smell of the glue (don’t go crazy), the visuals of the illustrations, the sound of the parent’s voice. Mind your audience. Make eye contact, but don’t look for a particular reaction. It may seem like babies are not listening, but they are absorbing the experience. Your patterns, routines and attentive habits will last a lifetime. Get your baby talking. Babies may start making sounds in response to your reading. This is why many books for this age contain nonsense words or animal sounds they’re easier to mimic. If your child make a noise, respond, they are communicating. With toddlers it’s hard to overestimate how important reading is to a toddler’s intellectual, social and emotional development. When you read with toddlers, they take it all in: vocabulary and language structure, numbers and math concepts, colors, shapes, animals, opposites, manners and all kinds of useful information about how the world works. What’s more, when you read out loud, your toddler connects books with the familiar, beloved sound of your voice — and the physical closeness that reading together brings. Reading happens throughout the day. Nightly bedtime reading is a familiar routine for parents of toddlers — what better way to get your little ball of energy to relax before bed? Make sure the atmosphere is soothing and not rushed, and choose some of the many books that end, strategically, with a peaceful going-to-bed. Read with your toddler during the day, as

7

well. Offering to read books with toddlers is one of the best ways some days, it can seem like the only way to get them to slow down and focus. You’ve been reading a long time, and you have a sense of what you like in grown-up books. As a parent, you have the chance to rediscover your taste in children’s books. Pull out your old favorites, and find what’s new that catches your eye when you’re in bookstores, libraries or friends’ homes. The good news is that the best authors and illustrators of children’s books aim to please their grown-up audience, too. Respect your child’s preferences. Your child is already surprising you with independent tastes and opinions. Just as your child doesn’t like your kale salad, he or she may not appreciate your choice of books “Make Way for Ducklings” as much as you did as a child. You may not be all that excited about fairies or talking trucks, but your child might be. Encourage children to express what they like about their books, and find more books like those. The parent-child pas de deux. The more you can make reading mutually satisfying, the more it will be associated with pleasure and reward. If your child doesn’t like your silly ogre’s voice, don’t use it. Remember, it’s your child’s story time. Let your child turn the pages, to control the pace. It’s O.K. to interrupt. Don’t get so caught up in your own reading that you ignore your child’s comments and queries. Interruptions show that your child is engaged. Expand your toddler’s world. Sometimes toddlers seem “stuck” on a certain book you’re not crazy about. Don’t deny them the books they like, but try to actively steer them toward other books as well Choose diverse books. All children need to see themselves reflected in the picture books around them. If your child is a member of a racial or ethnic minority, seek out books that feature children who look similar to yours. White children also benefit from books that show children with different skin tones and ethnicities. All children need to encounter books that present the variety of cultural traditions and family structures that coexist in our communities.

TIPS ON LOW BLOOD PRESSURE

Most of us are aware that having high blood pressure places you at increased risks for serious health conditions such as having a heart attack, stroke or kidney damage. But just as too high of a blood pressure is a cause for concern, sometimes too low of a blood pressure can be as well. “Blood pressure is an essential part of your body’s normal physiology,” says heart rhythm specialist Jeffery Courson, MD. Blood pressure reflects your ability to send oxygen rich blood to your vital organs and especially your brain, he says. Blood pressure is a simple measure of overall health that can be routinely performed at a doctor’s visit or at home. Home blood pressure monitors are widely available, inexpensive and relatively easy to use. If you have too high or too low blood pressure, you should monitor it routinely in accordance with our doctor, says A normal blood pressure is 120/80mmHg. The top number is the systolic pressure and represents a measure of pressure in your arteries when your heart is contracting. The bottom number is the diastolic and represents pressure in your arteries when your heart is relaxing. Whether blood pressure is too low has more to do with how you feel than the measured number. “A blood pressure of 90/60 mmHG may be normal for someone young and healthy, but may cause symptoms of lightheadedness or weakness in an older patient or someone with other health conditions,” Dr. Courson says. You might ask what causes low blood pressure? Well, medications are one of the most common causes for low blood pressure. He advises that if you do have low blood pressure measurements, you should review your medications with your doctor. Though there are many factors that can affect blood pressure, three of the most important are: Stroke volume, which is the amount of

blood pumped from your heart with each contraction. Blood vessel tone, which can be affected by stiffness or blockages in the blood vessels and Heart rate. Disruption of any of these factors can result in low blood pressure. For example, a patient with heart failure and a low stroke volume may be prone to low blood pressures. This sometimes occurs if too much fluid is removed with diuretics (water pills). Some conditions such as infection or paralysis can affect the tone in the blood vessels and result in low blood pressure. Arrhythmias that cause too slow (bradycardia) or too fast (tachycardia) heart rates can result in low blood pressure. It’s normal for blood pressure values to fluctuate and to go up and down. You need a higher blood pressure when exercising and a lower blood pressure when at rest as your oxygen requirements differ under these conditions. Your autonomic nervous system regulates our blood pressure.

RESPONDERS, THANK YOU FOR YOUR HONOR, COURAGE AND SACRIFICE, GOD BLESS YOU

“I think of this as our ‘automatic’ nervous system as we do not control this by thought. So, if you get upset or exercise, your blood pressure will rise. But you can’t “think” your blood pressure up or down. Some people have disorders that affect their autonomic nervous system that can result in difficulty regulating their blood pressure. This can result in low blood pressures upon standing or very labile blood pressure that fluctuate between high and low. Low blood pressure can cause symptoms of lightheadedness or dizziness, weakness or feeling faint. If you have any of these symptoms associated with a low blood pressure, you should contact your doctor. If you have a lower-than-normal blood pressure but you feel fine without symptoms you are probably okay, but still contact your doctor to make sure.
