As when a little babe is born the parents cannot guess The story of the future years, their grief or happiness, So came America to earth, the child of higher things, A nation that should light the way for all men's visioning’s; A land with but a dream to serve, such was our country then, A prophet to prepare the way of liberty of men! Great was the courage of the past; the tyrant's power was strong, Few spoke the praise of Freedom then, few sang her battle song Until the bell of liberty rang out upon the morn And told the world in Freedom's name a nation had been born. A nation that should lead the way to glorious years to be Should pledge its soul to sacrifice to set all people free.

THE WORD
Did you know that your body is a temple? That’s right — a veritable temple. Dr. Ryan Fraser
God created our physical bodies, therefore making it good and precious from the start. Therefore, we need to learn to appreciate and embrace that which is our flesh, while not participating in that which is of the carnal nature (Gal 5:16; Eph. 2:3; 1 Pet. 2:11; 1 John 2:16). We also need to learn to love and better care for our bodies, since God gives them to us for his glorious purposes. They ultimately belong to him. It is interesting to read Paul’s statement in Ephesians 5:29 -30 (ESV) that says, “For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church, because we are members of his body.” He makes the implicit assumption that we will naturally want to take care of our physical bodies. We will love them. Unfortunately, we’re often guilty of taking our bodies for granted, abusing and/or neglecting them in various ways, and using them for evil purposes. This ought not to be so. Many of us fail to properly nourish our bodies through a healthy and well-balanced diet. We don’t take the time or
effort to exercise like we should. Some people abuse their bodies through overeating, excessive consumption of alcohol, illicit drug usage, and even intentional self-harm. It’s a sad state of affairs. Our bodies are intended to be holy instruments for God’s special usage. We are also supposed to enjoy our bodies and their remarkable functional capacities, but are kept from doing so often by our own irresponsible decisions and chronic neglect. Now, of course, these fleshly tents (as Paul puts it in 2 Cor. 5:1-5) are not built to last forever. They eventually will wear out. They are a temporal structure that houses our soul and God’s Holy Spirit. But, that’s not an excuse to contribute to their premature demise. Our bodies are a stewardship from the Lord, a gift from above. Our bodies are indeed amazing creations. Your nose has the capability of remembering 50,000 different scents. Your taste buds are replaced every 10 days. Your body sheds about 600,000 particles of skin every hour. There are 100,000 miles of blood vessels in an adult human
body. Our ears and nose never stop growing. While awake, the human brain produces enough electricity to power a light bulb. Human bones are ounce for ounce stronger than steel, though they are composed of 31 percent water. The human eye can distinguish about 10 million different colors. If uncoiled, the DNA in all the cells in your body would stretch 10 billion miles. Your brain uses 20 percent of the total oxygen and blood in your body. In a lifetime, your brain’s long-term memory can hold as many as 1 quadrillion (1 million billion) separate bits of information. Your heart will pump nearly 1.5 million barrels of blood during your lifetime, enough to fill 200 train tank cars. When you take one step you are using up to 200 muscles. There are over 650 named skeletal muscles in the human body (some figures suggest as many as 840). Yes, your body is an amazing organism. It was made by and belongs to God. Therefore, take good care of it and use it for God’s purposes.
IT’S PRAYER TIME. OUR CHILDREN ARE FACED WITH EVERY THING, THEIR LIVES ARE THREATENED EVERYDAY. ALL OF OUR CHILDREN MATTERS, REGARDLESS OF WHO THEY ARE, WHERE THEY LIVE, WHERE THEY GO TO SCHOOL! THE GAP IN GENERTIONAL WEALTH Researched by Lizzy Ross a first year college student The unfortunate reality is that we are moving rapidly toward an oligarchic form of society, where a handful of billionaires have enormous wealth and power while working families have been struggling in a way we have not seen since the Great Depression. This situation has been exacerbated by the pandemic Today, half of our people are living paycheck to paycheck, so many of the very poorest among us are homeless, millions are worried about evictions, millions are uninsured or underinsured, and families all across the country are worried about how they are going to feed their kids. Today, an entire generation of young people carry an outrageous level of student debt and face the reality that their standard of living will be lower than their parents’. And, most obscenely, low-income Americans now have a life expectancy that is about 15 years lower than the wealthy. Poverty in America has become a death sentence. The growing gap between the very rich and everyone else is nothing new. Over the past 40 years there has been a massive transfer of wealth from the middle class and working families to the very wealthiest people in America. In 1978, the top 0.1% owned about 7% of the nation’s wealth. In 2019, the latest year of data available, they own nearly 20%. 5
Unbelievably, two of the richest people in America, Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk, now own more wealth than the bottom 40% of Americans combined. Addressing income and wealth and inequality will not be easy, because we will be taking on some of the most powerful and well-financed entities in the country, including Wall Street, the health insurance industry, the drug companies, the fossil fuel industry and the military-industrial-complex. But it must be done. Here is some of what Congress and the president can do in the very near future. We must find a way to continue the raise the minimum wages for hourly workers. A job should lift workers out of poverty, not keep them in it. We need to make it easier, not harder, for workers to join unions. The massive increase in wealth and income inequality can be directly linked to the decline in union membership in America. We need to make certain that all of our young people, regardless of income, have the right to high quality education – including college. And that means making public colleges and universities tuition free and substantially reducing student debt for working families. And yes. We need to make the wealthiest people and most profitable corporations in America start paying their fair share of taxes.

Foods for memory
u If saturated and trans fats are the food villains, then mono- and polyunsaturated fats may be the heroes in the dietary battle to preserve memory. In particular, the Mediterranean diet, with its menu of foods that are high in healthy unsaturated fats (olive oil, fish, and nuts) has been linked to lower rates of both dementia due to Alzheimer's disease and mild cognitive impairment (MCI)—the stage of memory loss that often precedes dementia. The Mediterranean diet includes several components that might promote brain health: Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fish, and olive oil help improve the health of blood vessels, reducing the risk for a memory-damaging stroke. Fish are high in omega-3 fatty acids, which have been linked to lower levels of beta-amyloid proteins in the blood and better vascular health. Moderate alcohol consumption raises levels of healthy high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol. Alcohol also lowers our cells' resistance to insulin, allowing it to lower blood sugar more effectively. Insulin resistance has been linked to dementia. Foods that can help your memory is Spinach, Popeye was onto something when he slammed that spinach. However, aside from building lean muscle, this particular leafy green is touted with slowing cognitive decline associated with aging and the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. Eggs are considered
a superfood the whites are protein rich while the yolks contain a precious water-soluble nutrient called choline, which improves memory, focus, and overall cognitive performance. See, there are many reasons to get crackin’ in the morning! You probably already guessed Walnuts are a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids (health fat), but did you know that they’re also extremely high in antioxidants, which promote brain function? So, sprinkle them on salads, your morning cereal, or grab a handful for a brainboosting crunch. Herbal teas, like Yerba Mate Tea promotes energy, weight loss, and so much more. Well, a certain brew, yerba mate, will also curb your mid-afternoon slump. The South American tea leaves S cause a similar energizing effect on the brain to caffeine, but don’t follow the spike in energy with burn out. When it comes to Lentil’s liker red, orange, green, and brown, this colorful legume is super rich in folate, a type of B vitamin that enhances brain power and A increases the dopamine function within the brain, to boost both performance and mood. Beets are also good, you can roast them, pickle them, bake them—whatever you do with when you eat them, you’re getting a blast of genius to your brain in the form of natural nitrates. This root veggie actually encourages fresh blood flow to the brain, which in turn, boosts
Several Things You Can Do Right Now for a Gorgeous Yard This Summer Although it may go against your instincts, mow high during the summer months. Taller grass blades encourage the roots to grow deeper, and deeper roots are better for seeking that all important water. Plus, tall grass actually helps to shade the soil and keep it cooler; which means less water is needed. And who doesn’t love a lower water bill? For beautiful golf-course-green grass, you need to water your lawn consistently. Water deeply twice a week, instead of daily shallow watering. Use a screwdriver to check how deeply water is penetrating the soil as you water. Try to keep the sprinklers on long enough to reach a moist-soil depth of 4 to 6 inches. If you notice dead patches of grass, that you can peel up like carpet, you might have lawn grubs. These destructive pests are white, C-shaped, and can grow as big as the size of a quarter. They like to feast on the soil and grass roots and damage your beautiful lawn. To get rid of them, it’s important to kill the grubs before they hatch, which is usually in the middle of summer. Apply a preventative grub control killer, then water immediately to activate the product. If it’s late summer and they’ve already hatched, use a product that kills on contact like Everyone knows your grass needs water to grow, but did you know it needs oxygen too? Aerating your lawn reduces compaction and improves drainage. In late August or September, aerate your lawn with what’s called a plug or core aerator a ma-
chine that pulls plugs of soil out of your lawn to allow necessary air, water, and nutrients to penetrate the roots If you notice a couple weeds in your grass, chances are there are more to come. They multiply quickly and before you know it your whole lawn as been infected. Larger weeds can be removed by hand, but if the weeds have started to take over your entire yard, you’ll need a post-emergent weed killer. Make sure to get a selective broadleaf herbicide, which targets weeds, without damaging the grass. In addition to the right amount of water, your lawn needs nutrients if you want it to reach its full potential. However, late summer is not the best times to fertilize your lawn. Applying fertilizer in the spring and late fall is recommended because the spring feeding gets your lawn off to a good start and the fall feeding helps strengthen the roots and provide nitrogen to your lawn green-up quickly next spring. These hot summer days are perfect for your kids to get outdoors and play on the slip-n-slide or in the kiddie pool. But unfortunately, these water toys can wreak havoc on the grass underneath them. After cleaning up, you might be left with dead patches where the toys were located. Simply clear away the dead grass and apply a grass patching product, which is a combination of seed, fertilizer and growing material. Be sure to choose the correct product for your specific grass type.

The Difference Between Memorial Day T
and Independence Day and Veterans Day
Americans enjoy several holidays with their military family and friends. Hot dogs, fireworks, flags and other summertime activities. Thanks to our veterans, we are privileged to have these special days to enjoy our freedoms, liberties and cultural values. However, many do not realize how our nationally recognized holidays were established nor understand their significance. Here is a quick tutorial on the difference between some of our most beloved ones: Memorial Day, Independence Day and Veteran’s Day. Few know that Memorial Day originated during the Civil War era. First called Decoration Day, this day was set aside for veterans, families, and civilians to decorate the grave sites of soldiers and servicemen they wished to honor and remember. Believed to be established around 1868, Decoration Day was first suggested by a veteran fraternity, called the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR). Historical accounts state that GAR wanted a nationally observed holiday for veterans to attend ceremonies and remembrance services without losing a day’s wage. It wasn’t until nearly nearly 100 years later and long after World War I and II that legislation was passed to put uniformity around national holidays. In 1968, the “National Holiday Act” touched a broad list of celebrated days and prompted national holiday observances to be on Mondays. This is when Decoration Day became Memorial Day. To give more credibility to the holiday, Congress deemed that Memorial Day would be set aside for all war veterans who had died, not only those from the Civil War. This distinction took a couple of years; therefore, Memorial Day didn’t become an official national holiday until 1971. Today we celebrate Memorial Day by visiting grave sites, memorials and attending parades to honor the many military lives lost.
Following on the heels of Memorial Day is Independence Day or July 4th. Commonly associated with the military due to the military guns and cannons often fired on this day, Independence Day is not military affiliated. The shots often heard are gun salutes to represent the original thirteen founding colonies. Independence Day is the day the thirteen colonies (the United States) declared independence from Great Britain. More importantly, July 4, 1776 is the day the Declaration of Independence was signed. Much like Memorial Day, Independence Day had a slow start. Many speculate that the deaths of Thomas Jefferson and John Adams on July 4th, 1826 sparked a resurgence in the importance of the day. But it took nearly another 50 years, in 1870, for the holiday be officially recognized by Congress. Today, this holiday is celebrated with picnics, fireworks, the American flag, and lots of family time. Veterans Day like Memorial Day, Veterans Day also honors war veterans; however, the distinguishing difference between the two holidays is that Veteran’s Day celebrates all veterans - living or dead. Memorial Day is reserved to honor and pay respects to the military lives that have been lost. Veterans Day is celebrated on November 11th each year. So why do we celebrate Veterans Day? Unlike Memorial Day and Independence Day, Veterans Day is a relatively new holiday. Originally called Armistice or Truce Day, this day got its name upon the conclusion of World War I. Following subsequent wars, Congress was pressured by a group of veteran supporters to change the name of Armistice Day to Veterans Day. In 1954, Congress passed Public Law 380 proclaiming Veterans Day a public holiday. While there were a few date changes along the way, November 11th is still the date we honor America's veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve. It honors military veterans who served in the United States Armed Forces
Youth’s Corner & spotlight Let's talk about mental health Researched by Lizzy Ross What impact has the epidemic had on the mental health of teenagers? If you're a kid who has struggled with mental health issues during the covid pandemic, you're not alone, according to studies. According to research, 40% of parents of teenagers say their child has shown indicators of new or worsened mental health disorders since the pandemic began. There are more teenage girls and boys who have reported an increase in anxiety, and I don't worry rates in girls have increased by 36% compared to 16% in boys. Depression has increased by 36% in girls compared to 16% in boys. Both girls and boys are seeing significant shifts in their sleep patterns. Girls are said to be withdrawing from their families at a rate of 24% against 21% for boys. There has also been a rise in hostile behavior. Research shows the teen depression during the pandemic is associated with teens own fears and uncertainty, as well as high levels of stress out on teens from parents. Isolation during the pandemic may be triggering new problems but for others the situation has exacerbated existing problems. The pandemic has had a lot of negative effects on teens relationships with their peers. This is said to have made teens use social media more as well as gaming so that they can have a connection between them and the friends because teens are using social media as an outlet. In all teens are not alone in their changes in the pandemic. and those changes have affected their mental health. Looking at the future, teens were asked how the pandemic has affected their values and long-term goals. Adolescence is a key time when identity develops, certain values are prioritized, and some forge lives of purpose in which they commit to longterm, meaningful, other-serving projects. Although the pandemic has restricted access to
many of the activities and roles that typically serve as vehicles for identity development (for example, after-school activities, jobs, time with friends), it has also introduced opportunities for reflection and independent thinking. “I think the crisis has strengthened my awareness so I can act on my values,” remarked Connor. “I have so much time to think for myself and reflect, and I find that I’m not spending energy trying to pretend I’m someone I’m not.” The slowed pace afforded by the pandemic also led Aislyn in a reflective direction: “What’s really going to make me happy in life is the emotional meaning of what success looks like, rather than the material aspects of success. I think I have a less clear picture of what my future looks like, but I have a better sense of what my future will feel like.” Other adolescents shared Aislyn’s sense of the heightened importance of social and emotional meaning. Zoya shared that the pandemic has increased how much she values friendship, and it has increased Devyn’s desire to help people: “My goal to be a marine biologist set me up to not have to deal with people too much, but now I kind of want to teach it, or mentor it, or share it with people.” No one can deny the hardships that the pandemic presents for adolescents. But at least for some it may also present opportunities that accelerate the development of purpose and the enactment of their values, particularly when caring adults provide support and encouragement without stealing the spotlight. Adolescents want adults to be forward-looking yet realistic with them. In part, that realism must entail seeing their strengths, appreciating their idealism, and embracing their capacities to contribute to a better world.
Baby Boomers Are More Sensitive Than Millennials A new study, the largest-ever conducted narcissism, looked specifically at hypersensitivity, a trait that helps determine how narcissistic people are. Its findings suggests that, contrary to popular belief, millennials aren’t more sensitive than the baby boomer generation. In fact, it’s the other way around. Generally speaking, as individuals in the study got older, they became less sensitive and the researchers found hypersensitivity sharply declined after a person turned 40. But when the researchers looked at generation-specific trends, they noticed that overall, older generations were more sensitive than younger generations. A new study suggests that, contrary to popular belief, millennials aren’t more sensitive than the baby boomer generation. In fact, it’s the other way around. The study including nearly 750 people, published December 10 in the journal Psychology and Aging, is the largest study of narcissism to date. In it, researchers examined six previously collected data sets so researchers could better understand how narcissistic traits vary among generations, and how levels of narcissism change as people age. Previous studies have only examined generational or individual trends in narcissistic behaviors, but not both at the same time like this new study. Narcissistic personality disorder is a condition in which a person has an inflated sense of self-importance and lack of empathy for others, which are typically mechanisms used to mask their low self-esteem, according to the Mayo Clinic. These behaviors can be milder, too, in which case a person exhibits one or two narcissistic traits, but doesn’t have the full-blown disorder. For the current study, researchers looked at people between the ages of 13 and 77 who had completed interviews about their work, personality, and family lives, which psychologists and psychiatrists then analyzed and ranked on a scale from 1 to 5, with 5 having the most narcissistic traits like defensiveness, authoritativeness, and stubbornness. The researchers used “hypersensitivity” to determine a person’s level of defensiveness, which William Chopik, a social-personality psychologist at Michigan State and a co-author of the study, said they defined as being unreceptive to others’ feedback and lashing out at any criticism toward one’s self. They found that younger generations are less hypersensitive than older generations. This suggests the millennial generation, which includes people who are current-
7
ly between 23 and 38 years old, is less sensitive than the baby boomer generation, which includes people between the ages of 55 and 73. Most people become less narcissistic as they get older Happy couple: Romantic relationships, work, and parenting are all experiences that can make a person less narcissistic, Chopik said. Generally speaking, as individuals in the study got older, they became less sensitive and the researchers found hypersensitivity sharply declined after a person turned 40. But when the researchers looked at generation-specific trends, they noticed that overall, older generations were more sensitive than younger generations. According to Chopik, this could be due to generation-specific events that shaped study participants’ outlooks on life. In the United States, for example, “baby boomers may be more narcissistic than other generations because they grew up in a time when the government provided privileges like social security,” Chopik said, noting that the increase in narcissistic traits between boomers and younger generations is still relatively small. There were some caveats to the study. For example, the researchers relied on existing data sets to reach their conclusions rather than personally following people of different generations for decades. Chopik also noted that narcissism can be measured various ways and they only used one of those methods, which could have skewed the results. The study still offers insight into an age-old trope that suggests younger generations are inherently more self-centered than older ones. “Based on our study, there’s weak evidence that this [younger] generation is the worst in human history,” Chopik said, adding that he hopes his team’s findings quell parents who fear their teenagers’ narcissistic behaviors will never change. “We know younger people on average are more narcissistic, but that goes away as they age. People will live their own lives and have experiences to lower that narcissism and mature,” Chopik said.

Assessor’s Office is Foundation for Property Tax System By Jeff Prang, Los Angeles County Assessor
My name is Jeff Prang. I am the 27th Assessor of the great County of Los Angeles. I was elected in 2014 and re-elected in 2018. I am here to share with you exactly what my office does and how this office directly affects you in, what I hope, is a most positive manner. First, every county in California has an elected Assessor. This part of government was deemed so important by the founders of the state that it is in the State Constitution as an independent department with an elected leader in each of the 58 counties. Every four years voters in every county in California elect their Assessor. The Assessor’s Office is the foundation of the property tax system, which this year will provide nearly $18 billion to local governments and school districts across the 4,751 square miles of Los Angeles County, including 88 cities and numerous unincorporated areas. I have about 1,200 employees to establish accurate values on 2.57 million parcels and other assessments. The total assessment value for 2020 was almost $1.8 trillion. We will be rolling out the latest figures this summer. I sometimes tell people what I do not do — I do not collect taxes. There is another guy, with a really intuitive title that does that: The Tax Collector. Actually, there are five departments involved in the local property tax system. The Assessor’s Office is the first in the process. We are responsible for determining the value of property used to calculate your taxes. We are primarily appraisers. However, we also administer a number of savings programs for homeowners, for veterans, for seniors, those with disabilities, and the victims of natural disasters. Property taxes in California are governed by Prop. 13, which was passed by voters in 1978. Prop. 13
introduced event-based reassessment. That means that instead of property being re-valued every year, or every few years, as is done in other states, property in California is only reassessed if there is a transfer of ownership or new construction. So when you buy a house, or other property, my office enrolls the market value at time of purchase, which remains the assessed value (or base-year value) of your home until there is a transfer (or new construction) plus a maximum annual inflation adjustment of 2 percent. So here is how it works: when you buy a house, you record a deed with the Registrar-Recorder, who then sends my Office a copy of that deed. We then evaluate whether a transfer of ownership has occurred and assess the property accordingly. All of those values are added to the Assessment Roll—the list of all taxable property and their values - which we compile each year and send to the Auditor-Controller, who then applies the relevant tax rate. Prop. 13 mandates a statewide property tax rate of 1 percent of market value at the time of transfer, but various local ballot measures, including voted indebtedness and parcel taxes, increases the effective rate above that. Once the Auditor-Controller applies the tax rate, it is transferred to the Tax Collector, who sends out bills and collects taxes. The same process works for new construction, except that municipal building and safety offices send us copies of building permits that prompts us to dispatch appraisers to determine the added value. It is important to note that in the case of additions, remodels, and other new construction, it is only a partial reassessment for the new, added-value. My office oftentimes can be overlooked because of the nuance of our complicated property tax system. But as you can now understand, it’s the vital first step on the journey to tax revenue that pays for the services we have come to rely on and we have come to expect in our daily lives. For more information, please go to assessor.lacounty.gov. Los Angeles County Assessor Jeff Prang has been in office since 2014. Upon taking office, Prang implemented sweeping reforms to ensure that the strictest ethical guidelines rooted in fairness, accuracy and integrity would be adhered to in his office, which is the largest office of its kind in the nation with 1,200 employees and provides the foundation for a property tax system that generates $17 billion annually.
