What if there were a tool that you could use to solve problems, come up with unexpected solutions and drive creativity? What if I told you, it will cost you nothing and requires very little effort to use? The subconscious mind is an incredibly powerful tool but few take advantage of it. Your subconscious works throughout the day when you are both awake and asleep but takes over entirely when you sleep. Free from the interference of daily life and external stimuli, at night your subconscious mind has nearly all the resources of your brain at its disposal. With the subconscious mind dominating such a large portion of your life, you need to put it to work. Thomas Edison once stated, "Never go to sleep without a request to your subconscious." Here's how to make that request: Get a journal, or prep a notes app on your phone. Hand writing in a physical paper journal can have a more substantial memory recall effect versus a digital diary. Before going to sleep, take a few minutes to think about and write down the

things that you want to accomplish. Ask yourself questions about your goals and how to achieve them. What's stopping you from moving forward? Develop a few very specific questions and write them down. Lock these in by repeating and rereading them and consciously making the request to solve them to your subconscious. While sleeping, your subconscious mind will get to work, approaching the problems from a variety of angles and making connections that may hold the answers to your problems. Upon waking: Grab your journal or notes app, and "thought dump" from your subconscious mind. Write your thoughts and feelings freely. Don't hold anything back, no matter how crazy or irrelevant it may seem. Write down your dreams, they may hold the answers you were looking for. Page back to the questions you wrote down the night before and write down your answers. A few hours after you write everything down, look

back at your notes again and try to derive some meaning out of them. You may find clarity and insights that may have been more difficult to discover while awake. Thanks to your subconscious mind, you'll have some new angles from which you can pursue the solutions you've been seeking. When you are faced with a dilemma, know that you already have the solution within you. All that you need to do is draw it from your subconscious mind. Once you learn how to unlock the power of your subconscious mind, you'll have a powerful tool ready to go to work while you rest and recover. Using the thought-dumping method, you can improve your ability to solve problems and better utilize the time that you spend peacefully sleeping. There are many tools available to help facilitate the above. A simple wellness journal may help you keep up with this excellent habit a bit more effortlessly. Be sure to place it somewhere prominent (such as on your pillow) so that you can't ignore it before bed time!

THE WORD

D

Psalm 23 By Pastor Rober Emberley Community Bible Church Psalm 23 reminds us that in life or in death — in times of plenty or want God is good and worthy of our trust. The psalm uses the metaphor of a shepherd’s care for his sheep to describe the wisdom, strength and kindness of our God. It gives voice to the sheep who are always eager to share what they know to be true, that staying close to the shepherd is always the safe place to be, for there can be nowhere He leads that does not, in the end, result in that which will be good for His flock. Tell me, little lamb, about your shepherd ... “The Lord is my shepherd; I have all I need. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” In the New Testament, Jesus reveals Himself to be the Good Shepherd of Psalm 23, and at the graveside of his friend Lazarus, this is especially evident. For there, as we learn from John 11:35, the shortest verse in the Bible, that “Jesus

Love Came Down at Christmas

wept.” Two words that speak volumes of what Psalm 23 means when it declares, “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me.” Here is Jesus our Lord and Shepherd — not merely looking down on our sorrow from a distance and feeling for us with sympathy, but coming alongside and entering into our suffering as one of us and in empathy He is with us. But even more than coming alongside us, our Shepherd steps up for us with the strength of the Almighty Rescuer that He is, able to defeat our most terrifying enemy. For we read in this same chapter Jesus announcing: “I am the resurrection and the life whoever believes in me, though he may die physically, yet he will live again eternally.” (John 11:25) Because of what the Shepherd has done for His sheep, death does not win; even though, for now, we stand in the valley of its dark shadow and often, like Jesus, weep at a graveside feeling as though the hole in our heart inside us is bigger than the hole in the earth in front of us. Even in that hard place and especially there — the Lord is with us; our Shepherd has gone before us and opened up the way for us to follow. Jesus said, “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand.” (John 10:11, 27-28)

12 Dangerous Scam Phone Numbers and Area Codes to Avoid By Research Department How many times have you heard the phone ring but didn’t want to pick it up because it could be one of those scam phone numbers dialing you? We’ve researched and have a list of dangerous area codes. Scam phone numbers are so out of hand. It’s gotten to the point where you need every advantage you can get to keep the rob callers and their scam numbers at bay. We’re going to explain what’s going on behind the scenes with these scams and arm you with the knowledge to beat them at their own game! Have you ever tried to place a call and gotten a message that the call is outside your plan and you’ll be charged a penny per minute? That’s a sign that you’re about to be “traffic pumped.” Here’s the deal: Rural carriers are allowed under federal law to charge wireless and long-distance carriers higher access fees for calls to local subscribers. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) reports the rural carrier’s partner with chat lines, adult entertainment numbers, “free” conference call outfits and others that are not domiciled locally. The goal is to artificially inflate the call volume into the home area codes of the rural carriers. With inflated call volumes, the rural carriers can then bill the wireless and long-distance companies an exorbitant amount and give the chat lines a kickback. That’s what traffic pumping is. Unfortunately, the burden of the higher charge is shared by your wireless or landline provider with you hence the warning about paying more that you hear at the start of an out-of-plan call. If you hang up before the call connects, you’re billed nothing. Area codes that participate in traffic pumping are typically located in scarcely populated rural parts of a couple of Midwestern states. These two area codes, in particular, are notorious for traffic pumping: 712 area code is in Western Iowa; 218 area code is in Northern Minnesota. A separate but similar scam is the one-ring cell phone scam. In this scam, crooks use robocalling technology to place internet calls that only ring once to cell phones. If you pick up, the robocalled just drops the line. But the bigger danger is if you miss the call. Like many people, you might think it’s an important call and dial that number right back. Bad move. Turns out the area codes are largely located in the Caribbean and could cost you $15 to $30 between international fees and per-minute charges! With that in mind, the Federal Trade Commission says you should never call back numbers in these area codes: 268 area code in Antigua and Barbuda; 284 in area code British Virgin Islands; 473 area code in Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique; 664 area code in Montserrat; 649 area code in Turks and Caicos Islands; 767 area code in Commonwealth of Dominica; 809, 829, 849 area codes in Dominican Republic; 876 area code in Jamaica When an unfamiliar number comes in, you’re better off waiting for a voicemail to determine if you have a legitimate caller before calling it back. You can also Google the phone number itself. If the number is a scam, chances are good that others will have posted warnings about it. 5

What Is the Meaning of Self-Worth and Self-Value? Self-worth and self-value are two related terms that are often used interchangeably. Having a sense of self-worth means that you value yourself, and having a sense of self-value means that you are worthy. The differences between the two are minimal enough that both terms can be used to describe the same general concept. According to the self-worth theory, self-worth is determined mostly by our self-evaluated abilities and our performance in one or more activities that we deem valuable. However, people commonly use other yardsticks to measure their self-worth. Here are some of the top factors that people use to measure and compare their own self-worth to the worth of others: Appearance—whether measured by the number on the scale, the size of clothing worn, or the kind of attention received by others; Net worth—this can mean income, material possessions, financial assets, or all of the above; Who you know/your social circle—some people judge their own value and the value of others by their status and what important and influential people they know; What you do/your career—we often judge others by what they do; for example, a stockbroker is often considered more successful and valuable than a janitor or a teacher; What you achieve—as noted earlier, we frequently use achievements to determine someone’s worth (whether it’s our own worth or someone else’s), such as success in business, scores on the SATs, or placement in a marathon or other athletic challenge (Morin, 2017). Your to-do list: Achieving goals is great and it feels wonderful to cross off things on your to-do list, but it doesn’t have a direct relationship with your worth as a human; Your job: It doesn’t matter what

YESWECANNEWSPAPER.COM

you do. What matters is that you do it well and that it fulfills you; Your social media following: It also doesn’t matter how many people think you are worthy of a follow or a retweet. It can be enlightening and healthy to consider the perspectives of others, but their opinions have no impact on our innate value; Your age: You aren’t too young or too old for anything. Your age is simply a number and does not factor into your value as a human being; Your grades: We all have different strengths and weaknesses, and some of us are simply not cut out for class. This has no bearing on our value as people, and a straight-A student is just as valuable and worthy as a straight-F student or a dropout; The number of friends you have: Your value as a human has absolutely nothing to do with how many friends or connections you have. The quality of your relationships is what’s really important; Your relationship status: Whether flying solo, casually dating, or in a committed relationship, your value is exactly the same—your relationship status doesn’t alter your worth; The money (or lack thereof) in the bank: If you have enough money to physically survive (which can, in fact, be $0), then you have already achieved the maximal amount of “worth” you can get from money (hint: it’s 0!); Your likes: It doesn’t matter if you have “good taste” or not, if your friends and acquaintances think you’re sophisticated, or if you have an eye for the finer things. Your worth is the same either way. Here we get to the heart of the matter—you are the only one who determines your self-worth. If you believe you are worthy and valuable, you are worthy and valuable. Even if you don’t believe you are worthy and valuable, guess what—you still are worthy and valuable!

alcohol or drug use, or have other mental health concerns along with anxiety You think your anxiety could be linked to a physical health problem. You have suicidal thoughts or behaviors — if this is the case, seek emergency treatment immediately. Your worries may not go away on their own, and they may get worse over time if you don't seek help. See your doctor or a mental health provider before your anxiety gets worse. It's easier to treat if you get help early. The causes of anxiety disorders aren't fully understood. Life experiences such as traumatic events appear to trigger anxiety disorders in people who are already prone to anxiety. Inherited traits also can be a factor. For some people, anxiety may be linked to an underlying health issue. In some cases, anxiety signs and symptoms are the first indicators of a medical illness. If your doctor suspects your anxiety may have a medical cause, he or she may order tests to look for signs of a problem. Examples of medical problems that can be linked to anxiety include: Heart disease, Diabetes, Thyroid problems, such as hyperthyroidism, Respiratory disorders, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma, Drug misuse or withdrawal; Withdrawal from alcohol, anti-anxiety medications (benzodiazepines) or other medications; Chronic pain or irritable bowel syndrome; Rare tumors that produce certain fight-or-flight hormones; Sometimes anxiety can be a side effect of certain medications. It's possible that your anxiety may be due to an underlying medical condition if: You don't have any blood relatives (such as a parent or sibling) with an anxiety disorder; You didn't have an anxiety disorder as a child; You don't avoid certain things or situations because of anxiety. You have a sudden occurrence of anxiety that seems unrelated to life events and you didn't have a previous history of anxiety Here are some factors that my may increase your risk of developing an anxiety disorder: Trauma. Children who endured abuse or trauma or witnessed traumatic events are at higher risk of developing an anxiety disorder at some point in life. Adults who experience a traumatic event also can develop anxiety disorders. Stress due to an illness. Having a health condition or serious illness can cause significant worry about issues such as your treatment and your future. A big event or a buildup of smaller stressful life situations may trigger excessive anxiety for example, a death in the family, work stress or ongoing worry about finances. People with certain personality types are more prone to anxiety disorders than others are. People with other mental health disorders, such as depression, often also have an anxiety disorder. Anxiety disorders can run in families. Drug or alcohol use or misuse or withdrawal can cause or worsen anxiety. Having an anxiety disorder does more than make you worry. It can also lead to, or worsen, other mental and physical conditions, such as: Depression (which often occurs with an anxiety disorder) or other mental health disorders; Substance misuse; Trouble sleeping (insomnia); Digestive or bowel problems; Headaches and chronic A pain; Social isolation; Problems functioning at school or work; Poor quality of life; cases of Suicide. There's no way to predict for certain what will cause someone to develop an anxiety disorder, but you can take steps to reduce the impact of symptoms if you're anxious: Get help early! Participate in activities that you enjoy and that make you feel good about yourself. Enjoy social interaction and caring relationships, which can lessen your worries. Alcohol and drug use can cause or worsen anxiety. If you're addicted to any of these substances, quitting can make you anxious. If you can't quit on your own, see your doctor or find a support group to help you .

Experiencing occasional anxiety is a normal part of life. However, people with anxiety disorders frequently have intense, excessive and persistent worry and fear about everyday situations. Often, anxiety disorders involve repeated episodes of sudden feelings of intense anxiety and fear or terror that reach a peak within minutes (panic attacks). These feelings of anxiety and panic interfere with daily activities, are difficult to control, are out of proportion to the actual danger and can last a long time. You may avoid places or situations to prevent these feelings. Symptoms may start during childhood or the teen years and continue into adulthood. Examples of anxiety disorders include generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder (social phobia), specific phobias and separation anxiety disorder. You can have more than one anxiety disorder. Sometimes anxiety results from a medical condition that needs treatment. Whatever form of anxiety you have, treatment can help. Common anxiety signs and symptoms include: Feeling nervous, restless or tense; Having a sense of impending danger, panic or doom; Having an increased heart rate; Breathing rapidly (hyperventilation); Sweating, Trembling; Feeling weak or tired; Trouble concentrating or thinking about anything other than the present worry; Having trouble sleeping; Experiencing gastrointestinal (GI) problems; Having difficulty controlling worry; Having the urge to avoid things that trigger anxiety Agoraphobia (ag-uh-ruh-FOE-be-uh) is a type of anxiety disorder in which you fear and often avoid places or situations that might cause you to panic and make you feel trapped, helpless or embarrassed. Anxiety disorder due to a medical condition includes symptoms of intense anxiety or panic that are directly caused by a physical health problem. Generalized anxiety disorder includes persistent and excessive anxiety and worry about activities or events even ordinary, routine issues. The worry is out of proportion to the actual circumstance, is difficult to control and affects how you feel physically. It often occurs along with other anxiety disorders or depression. Panic disorder involves repeated episodes of sudden feelings of intense anxiety and fear or terror that reach a peak within minutes (panic attacks). You may have feelings of impending doom, shortness of breath, chest pain, or a rapid, fluttering or pounding heart (heart palpitations). These panic attacks may lead to worrying about them happening again or avoiding situations in which they've occurred. Selective mutism is a consistent failure of children to speak in certain situations, such as school, even when they can speak in other situations, such as at home with close family members. This can interfere with school, work and social functioning. Separation anxiety disorder is a childhood disorder characterized by anxiety that's excessive for the child's developmental level and related to separation from parents or others who have parental roles. Social anxiety disorder (social phobia) involves high levels of anxiety, fear and avoidance of social situations due to feelings of embarrassment, self-consciousness and concern about being judged or viewed negatively by others. Specific phobias are characterized by major anxiety when you're exposed to a specific object or situation and a desire to avoid it. Phobias provoke panic attacks in some people. Substance-induced anxiety disorder is characterized by symptoms of intense anxiety or panic that are a direct result of misusing drugs, taking medications, being exposed to a toxic substance or withdrawal from drugs. Other specified anxiety disorder and unspecified anxiety disorder are terms for anxiety or phobias that don't meet the exact criteria for any other anxiety disorders but are significant enough to be distressing and disruptive. See your doctor if: You feel like you're worrying too much and it's interfering with your work, relationships or other parts of your life Your fear, worry or anxiety is upsetting to you and difficult to control You feel depressed, have trouble with

Being a grown-up is not as easy as it looks and part of what makes it so difficult is the fact that you now have to take care of your own home. Many quick and easy fixes exist that make home maintenance and putting things in their place a whole lot easier. Finding it hard to keep your bathroom smelling fresh? You can use essential oils to make sure it smells great all the time. Did you know that you already own a household tool that is ideal for picking up pet hair? These home hacks will help you make chores simpler, create storage out of thin air, and hopefully improve your quality of life!

7

1

If you need to get your home smelling sweet but are short on time, all you need is a car air fresher and a regular household fan. Purchase the kind that usually clips into a vent and attach it to your fan, being careful that it is not in the way of the rotor blades. The moment you start that baby up, your house will be smelling like a peach, or any other scent you desire, in no time. All without having to spray aerosols inside your living space.

2

Another problem we all face sometimes when shopping for new clothes is running out of closet space. If you don’t feel like going through your clothes and getting rid of things you don’t need, you can save some space by hanging two articles of clothing on each hanger. Just remove the tab from a can of soda and place it on the neck of a hanger through one of the holes. That adds a place to hang another hanger from the bottom hole and you have two pieces of clothes that take up the space of one!

3

Your home may seem spotless, but one thing that is probably filthy is your air conditioning vents. They are easy to overlook, but if not cleaned regularly they are prone to collecting massive amounts of dust and then recirculating them into your house. A simple and fast method of getting those vents sparkling is to put them in the dishwasher. Just make sure to blow dry the excess water off them (on the cool setting) before putting them back in place.

4

Most people have locked themselves out of their house accidentally, which is why keeping a spare key around is always a good idea. The usual hiding places are under a potted plant or somewhere else near the front door, but burglars already know about those spots. Instead, you can put your key into an empty bottle of pills and then glue a pinecone or something else which won’t look out of place on your front lawn. Then, you bury the bottle in a place you are sure to remember near the door and you are all set.

5

Frozen fruits for smoothies take up a lot of room in your freezer, and so do leftover vegetables from the new stir fry recipe you tried. It is hard to keep those bags sealed and organized, but a few binder clips can solve the problem. Just clip the folded open end of your frozen vegetables or fruits to the middle rack of the freezer. They will be left hangin g, free up extra space and let you easily see what you already have and what you need to buy.

6

Jewelry can sometimes be a hard thing to store and often ends up as a mess on the bedside table. If you haven’t found a good way to store your bracelet collection, not only can you never find the one you want to wear, you may even lose some pieces underneath the furniture. The neck of an empty bottle can be the perfect storage space. It will not only keep your bracelets and hair ties organized and accessible but will also give new purpose to the empty drink receptacle you have enjoyed but not discarded.
