How to Love yourself and feel “Inner Peace” By Jo Anna PayneJones Ph.D Love and Inner peace are part of our spiritual side. Glasser thought that if we change our thoughts we can change our behaviors. Behavior could be shaped for better choices leading to a happier world. A gap often exists between beliefs and behavior. Perfection is an unattainable goal. However, as behavior more fully mirrors values, something wonderful happens inner peace can be experience. Inner peace is a bringing together of what I do and what I really value. If we value developing an inner peace for both ourselves and young children as identifiable and obtainable values and which emphasis the importance of inner peace, the environment must deal with stress. Stress is a natural element of life. Inner peace could also be identified as self esteem, confidence and spiritualism. My definition includes love. Inner peace is when a human being has learned to love oneself, others and the environment. In history Jesus is the extreme example. Today’s examples may be Maya Angelou, Nelson Mandela, add it is to early to list Oprah Winfrey and Barack Obama. If inner peace is to be achieved it is a journey of trials and tribulations which lead to joy, peace and love. Erickson describes 8 stages of growth. Trust vs. mistrust, autonomy vs. shame and doubt, initiative vs. quit, industry vs. lack of industry, identify vs. role confusion, generativity vs. stagnation and finally integrity vs despair. In each stage competence must be obtained to proceed unscathed to the next stage. Inner peace comes at time when we achieve our goals of self identity and competence. Identifying stress one would state, stress kills. Yet it is a necessary part of life and in small does helps us cope with life. We can learn how to deal with stress as a childpositive habits can last a life time and contribute to “well being”. How do you cope with stress? How do you relax or solve problems? Having clear cut values and knowing how to practice these values leads to coping with stress. Coping with stress can bring an inner peace. Inner peace leads to love of oneself, others, and the environment. Learning how to think critically, gather information, and research ideas brings knowledge which nurtures inner peace. Knowledge of itself cannot accomplish this goal. Knowledge without evaluation, analysis and
application becomes empty. During these trying times learning how to deal with stress and develop an inner peace is essential for survival. How can we learn survival skills such as problem solving, innovation, creativity and learning how to love in a world that is in chaos? Everyone from the newborn infant to the senior citizen needs to relax. Hopefully by the time someone becomes a citizen, that person has a repertoire of relaxation techniques. It is different for the young child. Children need to learn how to relax, rest, and develop a sense of inner peace. Inner peace is closely related to a “positive” self image. In order to deal with stress, a child must learn how to relax. Play is the means by which the child can experience and explore the aspects of developing relaxation strategies. Play sets the stage for a happy child who uses every part of the body and mind. Children need to play. There are many forms of play. After active play, relaxing play can be planned. The exercises suggested here are forms of both physical and mental play. In order, to maximize the benefits of play for a young child, the environment must be planned. Props, materials and activities can all contribute to play. Play is the child’s work, it is how they learn about the world. it properties, and relationships. Sometimes active play leads to exhaustion and then quiet play can renew the spirit. Relaxing becomes a part of the day’s play routines. Exercises: Help the child learn all their body parts; Simon says is an old game used with children to help develop their listening skills. Change the words to “Mommy says”; Read books to your child. For this particular value, “learning how to relax and develop inner peace.” Concentrate on reading books about puppies, dogs, and other animals. Find books about children playing and resting; Visit a zoo and talk about how the animals play and then need to rest. Animals need to sleep . Some animals play during the day and sleep at night. While other animals sleep during the day and play at night. Take a visualization walk in your house. Go outside give your child a hug and a kiss and take a hand and walk through the house to the bedroom, find a pair of pajamas, undress, put on the pajamas and tuck the child into bed. Describe and talk about each step of the way. Describe the house, the pajamas, taking off the clothes and being
tucked into bed. Have the child close his/her eyes after each step. With the eyes closed have the child describe what he/she sees. Believe it or not doing this activity will help your child not only learn how to relax but will help the child learn to read, take exams, become creative and encourage imagination. All of these endeavors require visualization and memory. Now you are ready to make up some of your own exercises. Set aside some time everyday to work on realization and inner peace. Inner peace also mean being grateful for what we have. Help your child learn how to give thanks for his family, house, etc. After you have established your own exercises, choose a routine that you will do each day at bedtime. Vary this routine slightly from night to night or week to week but plan the routine with your child. For example: tonight is story night or Tuesday is story night. Wednesday we will listen to a CD for several nights. Sometimes children never get tired of the same routine. But you might. Let your child choose what you are going to do sometime and you also make suggestions and sometimes you choose. Have a special but brief ritual that never changes for example a special kiss or hug. A special or secret saying or a look. Do not include a glass of water or eat before bedtime. Parenting is work, takes time and planning
but is immensely rewarding. One last suggestion if your child is scared upon going to bed. Don’t threaten, enjoy this time before bed. If your child is very frightened buy a plastic bottle fill it with a light fragrance. Be sure that no one is allergic to the spray and that the spray is safe. Cover the bottle with a label entitled “Monster spray” and spray the room. You can also tell the child, “I do not believe in monsters but you think that there are monsters so lets get rid of them, spray the monster with our Monster spray.
