The latest news and updates from YWCA Hanover

Can you imagine our community without the services of YWCA Hanover and our partners? I shudder to think. I also shudder to think about missing an opportunity to provide for even one soul or one family. And if YWCA Hanover can’t grow our physical footprint, we risk missing that critical connection.
YWCA Hanover has grown enormously with program output, added services, and outreach in York and Adams County over the past several years With growth comes growing pains; in our situation, we have a lack of space to provide more to our community
There is nothing else to do but grow.
I am thrilled to announce YWCA Hanover has obtained nearby properties over the past 1½ years and is planning a Capital Campaign to raise funds to add and build new facilities to grow childcare programs, expand Safe Home services and shelter for clients, enhance social/racial

Passion seems to be the word most people use when expressing their desire to get involved with YWCA Hanover. They have a passion for our mission, for what we do, for who we serve, and for what we strive to be for our community
We have a place for people with passion. In fact, we have many places for them.
Advocate: Join the YWCA Advocacy Committee and become part of a movement to educate, inspire, instigate, motivate, and collaborate with others who are seeking peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all
Volunteer: If you have a desire to mentor young girls, become a volunteer mentor for the Girls Loving Life program. If you want to get deeper into service to victims of domestic violence, become a trained victim advocate to assist clients who call the hotline or attend community events that educate and raise awareness about domestic violence.
Or perhaps you just love being around little children… come read a book to them For those who have a desire to fortify the foundation of the YWCA, become a committee or board member and help to shape the policies that guide all that we do You can also help at events like Walk a Mile in Her Shoes or assist with custodial/maintenance tasks should you wish to earn volunteer hours for community service.
Donate: As a nonprofit organization, YWCA Hanover gratefully accepts donations to provide programs and services such as domestic violence prevention education and Girls Loving Life. Donations are needed to help maintain the property and keep it in a safe condition We also use donations for assisting families who need help paying for child development program tuition.
YWCA Hanover is cultivating a space where women from every walk of life can come together to be inspired, encouraged, and enveloped in our community. Our hope is that when we walk, we walk with energy, motivation, and maybe with a few new friends, too
This year has been one amazing year filled with just that: women empowering women and leaving our events feeling the strength to try new things Our inaugural Par-Tee On Women's Golf outing was one for the books for sure. We had 59 women who took time out of their busy schedules to golf with us at the Bridges Golf Course Some of these women were trying golf - something that seemed intimidating and out of their league – for the first time. The day was filled with fun games and simple challenges to introduce our newbies to the greens and the sport.
The response was over the top! Many of our participants are now playing golf with women they met the day, while others are enjoying the sport with their partners
Save the date for next year’s Par-Tee On Golf Outing on Friday, June 9, 2023, at the Bridges Golf Course with a shotgun start at 1:30pm.
YWCA Hanover celebrated 10 years of hosting the Annual Walk A Mile in Her Shoes event. We walk to have those conversations about Domestic Violence and Human Trafficking This is not only a way to raise necessary funds for those who are victims of Domestic Violence and Human Trafficking, but most importantly, it is a vessel to raise awareness In celebration of our 10th Annual Walk A Mile in Her Shoes event, we were able to say thank you to all those who have not only supported this event for 10 years, but whose efforts helped raise awareness in both Hanover and Adams County. Walk A Mile in Her Shoes is the only fundraiser that directly supports the programs and all services of Safe Home.
There was incredible energy here at YWCA Hanover on Friday, October 14, 2022, when the EMERGE Women’s Conference brought together women in our community for a day of reflection, relaxation, and renewal. With sessions titled Pebble in the Pond - Creating Ripples, Moving Mountains Together - Empower Her, Leaving a Legacy - Bold Blueprint for Others to Live By, and Mindset Shifting - Mind Over Matter (If it Doesn’t Create Wellness Then it Doesn’t Matter), attendees had a breadth of invaluable information available to them, delivered by the over 17 speakers within these sessions. It was an experience that left the audience wanting more and we plan to do just that for 2023
With today’s social media and online platforms, anyone can find a plethora of resources to learn something new and improve their business or themselves, all from the comfort of their kitchen or office. So why does YWCA Hanover believe in and promote the Women of Hanover Network, a local, inperson event? Because we know we are better when we are together, stronger when we are supported, and inspired when we are surrounded with people who are also looking to grow and learn.
The Women of Hanover Network provides opportunities for attendees to mix and mingle, form new relationships, and strengthen existing ones You may make a connection with the perfect provider or prospect, or you may find yourself sitting next to your next customer or mentor. At our most recent event on November 17th, the Women of Hanover Network connected with over 40 women in our community.
This group continues to grow and allows you to connect with so many in our community, to build confidence in yourself, and bring back fresh ideas to your business or personal needs.
Please check our website for the next event in 2023, or contact Janise Bankard at jbankard@ywcahanover org
YWCA Hanover Safe Home’s lifesaving work is made possible by a small, dedicated team of staff and volunteers During my time here at Safe Home, I have had the honor and pleasure of working with some truly amazing Safe Home volunteers, and I thought that the YWCA Hanover’s Winter/Spring 2023 Newsletter would be a wonderful opportunity to acknowledge the 1,478 volunteer hours providedbySafeHomevolunteersin2021.
From taking hotline shifts, facilitating our support group, stocking the pantry, or helping at outreach and prevention events, Safe Home volunteers are an integral part of helping victimsseeksafetyandstartonthepathtoempowerment.
To celebrate this outstanding achievement, I have asked two of Safe Home’s longest-serving volunteers to write abouttheirexperiencesvolunteeringwithSafeHome.

HomeDian Cramer and Letitia Bartlett have been volunteering with Safe Home for over a decade During their time working with us, they have assisted hundreds of individuals in too many ways to list. I think their heartfelt and eloquent descriptions of their time with Safe Home say more about being of service to our community than anything I could put into words
I am so grateful for all of the wonderful people who give their time and support to Safe Home and the individuals we serve Thank you for everything that you do!

Jamie Bonser Director of Domestic Violence Programs & Safe
Most of my volunteering at Safe Home has been spent as a support group facilitator alongside other committed volunteers and staff I have sometimes sat with just one client, as do the staff advocates each day. Just one person stepping up can make that difference with the understanding that you don’t need an army to make an impact in your community
Through my training at Safe Home, volunteer opportunities within the agency, my past career as well as my church life, I feel blessed with the knowledge and compassion needed to help others understand their worth - to find a way to bring peace into their lives, as well as the lives of their families. The rewards of witnessing clients walk from the dark into the light of empowerment is far greater than you can imagine
Ask yourself, what is my purpose in this life a very difficult question to answer when randomly posed. Volunteering can bring purpose and focus to your life: boosting personal growth, improving your own selfesteem/self-worth, and most of all, providing you with a chance to give back
I am thankful over these past years to work with the
2021 Red Sand Project Volunteers demonstrating how victims and survivors of Human Trafficking often fall between the cracks
In November, Girls Loving Life wrapped up its ninth session under the direction of Nanci Mart and Marcia Knorr. The program revolves around five tenets created to encourage girls to love their bodies, love their souls, love others, love learning and growing, and love life. Each week in the eight-week session focused on a specific tenet through journaling, discussions, and activities
Many of our GLL participants have been with the program for a number of sessions, so the lessons are always updated and fresh For example, while we have worked with positive affirmations in previous sessions, this session we wrote them on small heartshaped mirrors to remind us to give ourselves as much grace as we offer to others A favorite GLL activity, the downtown scavenger hunt, was revisited with new images and the girls - new and oldhad a fantastic time searching high and low for the items on their lists.
One of the best ways to introduce or practice multiple ideas in a short time is through stations, and GLL counts on our mentors to keep these running smoothly Our mentors (grades 9-12) and our mentors in training (grade 8) work with the younger girls in large groups, small groups, and one-on-one to help with activities, encourage conversations and social development, and also to provide a little extra attention if anyone is having a rough day. The mentors help us with ideas for lessons and have saved many a lesson with their ability to troubleshoot and solve problems.
Girls Loving Life is a free program provided by YWCA Hanover for girls in grades 2-8, and mentors in grades 9-12. Our eight-week winter session will begin on January 14, 2023, and end on March 4, 2023, with meetings held from 9:00 - 10:30 am Saturday mornings. Girls who attend multiple sessions of GLL are not doing the same activities, but are getting the same positive messages. Over the last five years, we have had the privilege of watching many of our girls grow and mature as they continue in GLL. We also look forward to our middle-grade girls becoming mentors in the next few years
We would love to have the special girl/s in your life join the Girls Loving Life family in January If you have any questions about this free program, please contact:

or Louis Mart, Client Services & Marketing Director (lmart@ywcahanover.org)
