These photos of families enrolled in YWCA Hanover’s childcare program depict just a few of the ways we create a family centered childcare program. Involving parents in meaningful events to enjoy and have fun with their children at their familiar and secure educational setting is a crucial part of creating a family supportive environment
Jody Shaffer CEO, YWCA Hanover
YWCA Hanover leadership is engaged in strategic advocacy to benefit the children and families enrolled in our childcare programs, teachers and staff members, and outcomes that factor into quality education which impacts our community We understand the childcare industry and are committed to
improving all facets of the operation locally as well as making investments on a county and state level as we are currently navigating with childcare professionals, funders, and stakeholders in York County and across Pennsylvania through Every Child Has Opportunities (ECHO) initiative
We welcome parents and guardians to become actively involved in the childcare program by volunteering to be part of the family advocacy committee, attending events, providing meaningful feedback to leaders and teachers, and being involved in all other YWCA events that support our mission. YWCA Hanover was proud to celebrate the 12th annual Walk A Mile in Her Shoes event This powerful march is more than just a fundraiser - it is a crucial opportunity to have meaningful conversations about the pressing issues of domestic violence and human trafficking. This year, Hurricane Ernesto was literally threatening to rain on our “parade,” but the forecast cleared and we had over 242 walkers join our march and help us surpass our fundraising goal.
The funds raised directly support the life-changing programs and services provided by Safe Home. These resources are a vital lifeline for victims, offering safety, counseling, and the support needed to rebuild their lives. Every step taken during Walk A Mile makes a tangible difference in the lives of those affected by abuse and exploitation.
Please join us on Friday, August 5th, for the next Walk A Mile in Her Shoes event. Your participation will help h tt th il di d ti i l d h t fficking while providing crucial support to those who e safe from harm and empowered
The 2nd Annual Purple Paws Pet Walk was a huge success, with over 80 people and their fur babies in attendance. This event was a partnership between YWCA Hanover Safe Home and the Adams County SPCA - two organizations deeply committed to addressing the intertwined issues of domestic violence and animal cruelty
It's a tragic reality that pets often become unintended victims of domestic abuse, suffering harm at the hands of abusers as a means to manipulate and terrorize their human victims By bringing the community together around this cause, the Purple Paws Pet Walk shines a light on this devastating issue and raises critical funds to support the vital work of YWCA Hanover Safe Home and the ACSPCA
We're already looking forward to the 3rd annual Purple Paws in September 2025 (the exact date is still to be determined) Together, we can continue to raise awareness and provide resources to protect both human and animal victims of domestic violence Your participation makes a real difference in our community
Among the variety of partnerships social services agencies build, a correctional facility does not seem like an obvious choice. However, many individuals who are facing criminal charges and are incarcerated have experienced trauma of some sort, often specifically domestic violence and/or human trafficking.
Abusers will often use the legal system as another way to abuse their victims. Common tactics abusers use are fear and coercion to force their victims to admit to a crime they didn’t commit and/or make false police reports, and manipulating an abusive situation to put the blame on the actual victim. Abusers will also force their victims to be unwitting participants in a crime; victims then find themselves incarcerated and facing criminal charges that they are unable to fight on their own
Abuse can continue during and after the victim is behind bars; consequently, being “away” from their abuser doesn’t always mean they are safe Individuals who are experiencing DV at home are more likely to continue being abused upon release due to a lack of knowledge of available resources, as well as other barriers that many victims face, such as having nowhere else to go for their home plan
Safe Home recognized the need for an intervention that went beyond just helping someone once they were able to seek out services on their own Due to the confidential nature of domestic violence advocacy and service provision, it is not uncommon for individuals who need help to not even know that we exist When the opportunity came for us to participate with treatment services already in place in Adams County prison, Safe Home was eager to begin working in a new area of advocacy
Safe Home has been partnering with Adams County Adult Correctional Complex (ACACC) for about two and half years to provide direct services to individuals who find themselves incarcerated while needing advocacy and support from a domestic violence advocate Safe Home staff, together with Director of Treatment Services Barbie Taylor at ACACC, have been working collaboratively to bring a much-needed service to inmates who disclose they are victims/survivors of domestic violence upon entry into their facility. Safe Home supplied ACACC with a screening tool with four simple questions to help determine individuals who could be referred to us for services. Once the individual has screened in, they have the opportunity to speak with an advocate from Safe Home if they choose to do so. At that point, the treatment specialist assigned to them will connect with a designated Safe Home contact and schedule a phone call.
Since the beginning of our partnership, Safe Home advocates have spoken to several inmates on the phone to do an initial screening, and then have visited the inmates upon request to offer further services and planning for when they are released We have been able to successfully assist with inmates who desperately needed an advocate to help seek out their own justice and get connected with the appropriate resources
More recently, Safe Home has provided training for a group of correctional officers who are part of a brand-new treatment program ACACC will be launching in the near future This program is being formed from a Scandinavian model and will be the first of its kind in this area The focus is to provide inmates with trauma services and resources that will lower the recidivism rate and help them move forward into a brighter and safer future after incarceration
Finally, Safe Home has been in the planning process and will soon be implementing a domestic violence support group within the prison for inmates who show a need and interest for this service It has been life changing for the individuals we have already met and connected with services that they may not have had access to otherwise
Safe Home is overjoyed to be able to continue to grow and cultivate this relationship with ACACC and expand our reach to the members of the Adams County community We look forward to our ongoing partnership and are grateful to work with a great group of individuals who truly care about prison reform and want to see inmates experience hope and healing
As the winter season unfolds, YWCA Hanover is thrilled to share how we’re creating a nurturing and engaging environment for children in our community Whether you're exploring childcare options or simply curious about what we offer, here’s a glimpse into what is happening in our Early Learning Center and School Aged Learning Academy
In October, we learned all about fire safety and had the local fire trucks visit our center At the end of October, several local businesses downtown participated in our Annual Candy Crawl event. The kids got to wear their costumes and they received lots of goodies to take home! In November, we focused on being thankful, and we hosted our annual family Thanksgiving lunch.
This winter, children will enjoy activities designed to stimulate their creativity, build social connections, and encourage outdoor play (even in the cooler weather) Our winter-themed activities, which include crafting snowflakes and building "indoor igloos," will fill our classrooms with seasonal fun that also supports developmental milestones.
Children need fresh air and movement, and our Outdoor Adventures are designed for that With proper winter gear, children will enjoy outdoor play in our safe and supervised spaces
The number one activity to increase a child’s level of success in the future is reading – that’s why our ELC presents Storytime Warm-Up, where winter tales and storytelling sessions will inspire imagination while teaching lessons about kindness, perseverance, and teamwork
ELC students enjoy weekly music lessons with Miss Deb. They worked hard to prepare for the holiday concert in December, which was a huge success!
Our staff uses The Creative Curriculum to develop daily lesson plans aligned to the PA Early Learning Standards We also serve all children a nutritious breakfast, lunch, and afternoon snack that follow the child and adult food program guidelines Childcare is offered Monday-Friday from 6:00am-6:00pm.
Our SALA students have been busy working with STEM materials to learn all about science, technology, engineering and math In our school age program, we provide breakfast and an afternoon snack, transportation to and from school on school days, and virtual learning opportunities on distance learning days We also provide all day care with lunch included on the days school is closed We offer flexible options to suit your family’s needs and would be delighted to schedule a tour for you to experience our center firsthand.
If you would like to find out more information or register for the Early Learning Center or School Age Learning Academy, please call 717-637-2125 or email knelson@ywcahanover org
Girls Loving Life wrapped up its 11th session and as always, it was hard to say goodbye to the group we had gotten to know so well over the eight weeks we were together. From October 5 – November 23, Nanci and Marcia, along with the program mentors, led the girls through discussions and activities focused on elements of leadership.
Teaching leadership skills to elementary-age girls requires a thoughtful approach that balances structured learning with organic exploration By focusing on core competencies like courage, listening, resilience, risktaking, fun, and advocacy, we can help young girls develop into confident leaders who make positive impacts in their communities.
Girls Loving Life celebrates both successes and failures in our activities, emphasizing that taking risks and showing courage means being willing to try, regardless of the outcome Our program creates a safe space for girls to experiment with leadership roles in low-stakes situations Resilience is crucial for young leaders facing challenges and setbacks We help our girls develop a growth mindset by reframing failures as learning opportunities Every week, a mentor shared a story of a “first female”; someone who overcame obstacles and became a leader in their field, giving our girls an opportunity to learn from someone else’s experiences
In addition to introducing famous women, GLL was fortunate to have strong women from our local community share their time and experience with us Amber Bosley, coach of the Black Rose Juniors roller derby team, along with a number of the adult and junior players, introduced our girls to roller derby and put them through their paces, while emphasizing that every body is the right body for roller derby Beck Lawrence, owner of The Serpent’s Key, spoke to our girls about their experiences with advocacy and helped them think of ideas they are passionate about and want to change for the better Beck showed their support for our girls by displaying their posters in The Serpent’s Key – stop by and check them out!
Nanci, Marcia, and the Girls Loving Life mentors make leadership development enjoyable and engaging through games, creative projects, and team challenges When girls associate leadership with positive experiences, they're more likely to seek out leadership opportunities and develop their skills naturally Girls Loving Life fosters a culture where leadership and joy go hand in hand Check us out on YWCA Hanover’s website, and email any program questions to Nanci, nmart@ywcahanover org
Registration is open for our winter session, January 11 – March 1, 2025. Look for it under the Programs heading on YWCA Hanover’s site.
YWCA Hanover has had a truly remarkable year, marked by a series of exceptional events that directly support our mission and cultivate a vibrant community where women from all walks of life can come together, find inspiration, encouragement, and a profound sense of belonging
This past year has been nothing short of transformative We have witnessed the power of women empowering women, as our programs have enabled participants to step outside their comfort zones and embrace new experiences Our "Par-Tee On" golf outing was a shining example of this
Despite the initial trepidation that some may have felt, 135 women golfers carved time out of their busy schedules to try their hand at a sport that was, for many, entirely new and seemingly intimidating territory The games were designed to be simple and, above all, fun – a means of introducing these women to the joys of the green Save the date, Friday, May 30th for the next Par-TEE On Golf outing
YWCA Hanover is proud to host the quarterly Women of Hanover Network, a vibrant networking event This initiative empowers women in our community to connect, grow, and thrive Year after year, this event has witnessed tremendous growth, and this past year was a resounding success, drawing over 90 talented and driven women together
The Women of Hanover Network provides an invaluable platform for networking, mentorship, and inspiration Through this event, women are able to build meaningful connections, share experiences, and discover new ways to advance both professionally and personally
We are excited to announce that our next Women of Hanover Networking event will be held on Wednesday, February 19th. We look forward to seeing you there as we continue to celebrate and uplift the women of Hanover
The EMERGE Women's Conference was a completely sold-out and resounding success in 2024 This year's full-day program was filled with empowering sessions that spoke to the diverse needs and interests of the attendees
Highlights included:
·"Anxiety - How to Kill the Tiger & Tame the Dragons," an insightful workshop on managing stress and anxiety.
·"Women, Wealth, & Wisdom" explored strategies for building financial security and confidence. The "Myth-busting Menopause" session provided much-needed education and support around this important life transition.
To cap off the day, the ladies kicked up their heels with some country line dancing. There was no doubt the participants left feeling recharged, inspired, and brimming with new wisdom and camaraderie
Mark your calendars - the EMERGE Women's Conference will be back on Friday, October 10, 2025. We hope you'll join us for another transformative day of learning, connection, and celebration
