Summit for a Better Tomorrow
We, the teens, are committed to changing today for a better tomorrow. Join us for hands-on activities and collaboration to make a difference in our community and world.
Rising 8th graders through graduating seniors are invited to come together with like-minded people to envision a path to a better tomorrow. The keynote speaker for the summit is Loretta Claiborne, an American global speaker and multi-sport athlete who competes in the Special Olympics She has been honored with the 1996 Arthur Ashe ESPY Courage Award presented to her by Denzel Washington Carla Christopher, Bitsy Sanders , and Ky the Chemist will lead our participants (check out her web page at https://kythechemistcom) through a fun, interactive, future-focused workshop The fee is $75 and registration is required. The workshop runs July 28-July 31, from 9 am - 1 pm.

Bitler’s work stems from an appetency for nature and cultivates his attraction to shape, color, and texture. Simplistic forms become transformed through his use of dark line pyrography, the intricate cut-out of negative space and the application of vibrant colors, leaving the admirer with a tribute to nature’s beauty Bitler’s exploration with raw gourds as a canvas and his honing of the skills and processes of crafting them into works of art has spanned over more than a decade.

GirlsLovingLife

Every session of Girls Loving Life offers participants a new opportunity to build character, develop confidence, and have fun. Nanci Mart and Marcia Knorr, along with the high school-aged mentors, create lessons and activities to help young girls grow into capable, compassionate, smart women.
The theme for the most recent session was courage Throughout the eight weeks, GLLers were encouraged to find and use their courage in several ways, including practicing how to speak honestly and respectfully in “scary” situations, and learning techniques to branch out and meet new people who will accept them for who they are
GLL was delighted to have Joe Dressel, owner of Hanover Boxing Club, help the girls learn the connection between courage and being prepared. Preparation allows us to visualize potential outcomes and develop contingency plans, which helps us feel more in control. This sense of control diminishes fear and makes courageous action more accessible. While Joe’s presentation focused on the importance of avoiding unsafe situations, he taught the girls skills and techniques to use if they needed to.
February was Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month. GLL partnered with Shanda White, from YWCA Hanover Safe Home, to teach the GLLers about boundaries: what we’re willing to accept for ourselves and others, and how to be strong when boundaries are pushed. She led a Lego building activity to illustrate the need for open communication - both speaking and listening - in a healthy relationship. Most of our GLLers are not of dating age, but it's never too soon to teach girls it’s okay to stand up for themselves.
GLL is designed for girls in grades 2-8 Whether you have an outgoing, high-energy, willing-to-try-anything child or a quiet, introspective, cautious child, the teachers and mentors of Girls Loving Life will meet her where she is and help her discover her unique strengths, build confidence, and develop lifelong skills in a supportive community where she can thrive Our program emphasizes personal growth through creative expression and meaningful friendships, all while encouraging girls to embrace challenges and celebrate their authentic selves
High school girls interested in joining GLL as mentors need only to have a passion for mentoring and a commitment to creating a positive impact in younger girls' lives. Our mentors are role models for our five tenets: love yourself, love your body, love others, love learning and growing, and love life. High school students gain valuable experience in leadership, empathy, and community service while fostering meaningful connections across age groups.
The next session of Girls Loving Life runs from October 4 - November 22. Registration is available on YWCA Hanover’s website, ywcahanover.org, under the Programs tab.

MeetShanda,ourPrevention andOutreachAdvocate

Domestic violence is a serious public health issue, and it is completely preventable. At YWCA Hanover Safe Home, we employ a full-time Prevention and Outreach Advocate whose only job is to try to stop violence in our communities before it starts Shanda White has been with Safe Home for just over a year. As an experienced educator with a strong background in academic advising, family engagement, and curriculum development, Shanda brings energy, passion, and a sense of urgency to her role as our Prevention and Outreach Advocate.
Shanda spends her time developing relationships with community partners, providing educational workshops and training for other organizations and community members, teaching students in schools about healthy relationships, and sharing about Safe Home and our services at a wide range of events throughout York and Adams Counties.
If you’re interested in meeting Shanda or learning more about the trainings she offers, you can reach her at swhite@ywcahanover.org, or come see her at one of the many events she’ll be a part of in the coming months.

We welcomed the new season with joyful voices and sweet treats during our Children’s Learning Academy’s spring musical and ice cream social. The children sang their hearts out, showing off all they’ve learned through music and movement
After the performance, families gathered for some sweet ice cream treats, making it a wonderful afternoon of connection, celebration, and fun. Thank you to all who joined us and helped make the event so special!
Our Pre-K friends had a heartwarming visit to the Homewood Retirement Community, where they shared smiles and songs with the residents during a special Music Time It was a beautiful morning of connection, and our little performers were a hit!

We’re thrilled to announce the opening of our brand-new Sensory Room, made possible through the generous support of the ECHO grant! ECHO is an early childhood education initiative in York County, Pennsylvania, led by Community Connections for Children and York County Economic Alliance. Thank you ECHO for making this sensory room possible. This calming and engaging space is designed to support children’s sensory needs, offering a quiet place to reset, explore textures, lights, sounds, and develop self-regulation skills. Whether it’s a peaceful break or a moment of mindful play, this room is already making a big impact in our daily routine.

School Age Learning Academy
Spring has sprung, and our school-age kiddos have been soaking up the sunshine, exploring our community, and making the most of every moment! Here's a peek at what we've been up to this season.

Spring Break was packed with excitement! One of the highlights was our visit to the Peep Show, where the kids were amazed by the colorful and creative marshmallow masterpieces From pop culture scenes to sweet dioramas, the displays sparked lots of smiles and inspiration
With the warmer weather finally here, we also took advantage of some beautiful spring days to visit local parks. The fresh air, open space, and time to run, play, and just be kids made for some truly joyful afternoons. Tag, climbing, and scavenger hunts were just a few of the favorite activities! We are busy planning for our summer Camp Phoenix program Summer camp is open to children who have completed kindergarten to sixth grade The camp day is from 9:00am –3:00pm, and the camp session runs from June 2nd to August 15th, 2025. Campers are provided with breakfast, lunch, and an afternoon snack every day. We are open from 6:00am-6:00pm and parents can drop off or pick up anytime within that time frame.
