Early Learning Center
There have been busy times in the Early Learning Center!
In March, we celebrated Read Across America Week, and each child received a book to take home. To celebrate reading, some of our students’ grandparents came in and read their favorite books to the classrooms March also was National Healthy Eating month; we focused on nutrition as we invited our families to join us for a healthy breakfast with their child
Our Family Carnival held outside on the parking lot in April was a big success! Complete with an inflatable slide, games, face painting, food trucks and a visit from the Easter Bunny; all of this was to mark the Week of the Young Child.
Our PreK class took a trip to a local playground to have a picnic lunch and enjoy the nice spring weather
May will include our spring musical where all ELC children sing songs they have been working on all year! We will finish out May with our PreK graduation.
School Age Learning Academy
The School Age Learning Academy is for children who are in kindergarten through sixth grade. They have been busy finishing out the school year and are getting ready for summer camp. During the school year, the school-age students also have weekly music lessons with Deb Smith after school
Monday afternoons you can often hear them playing instruments, singing, and playing musical games.
On a beautiful day in April, our SALA students posted dozens of pinwheels on the front lawn of the YWCA as part of the international Pinwheels for Peace art project.
In May we will be setting up our school age classrooms with a STEM center where the school age children can participate in STEM activities.
We provide breakfast and an afternoon snack, as well as transportation to and from school on school days There are also virtual learning opportunities on remote learning days The children simply come to YWCA Hanover with their school laptops and they can log into their school to do zoom lessons with their class and complete all their schoolwork assignments on our WiFi. All-day care (including lunch) is provided for those days when school is closed.
We are very flexible and adapt our program to meet the varied needs of our school age participants.

Girls Loving Life
The winter session of Girls Loving Life wrapped up on March 4. Throughout the eight week session, we had activities, guest speakers, and bullet journals to help us internalize the five tenets of the program - love yourself, love others, love learning and growing, love your body, and love life
Each week was designed to highlight specific areas of our overarching idea for the session: communication. Whether it was how to politely stand your ground, or how to communicate with parents, each week our girls had the opportunity to develop skills they can use in all areas of their lives. As always, the youth mentors – Courtney, Cassie, Sierra, Zoe, Heather, and Finley - did a phenomenal job interacting with and helping the younger girls
Every girl who joins us at GLL is given a bullet journal. These are used to introduce and reflect on each session’s topics, as well as to record feelings and thoughts about the topic during the week. The start of each session began with a voluntary sharing of how the previous week’s topic influenced the girls’ actions throughout the week It is always inspiring to hear how the girls incorporated the lessons into their actions!
GLL focuses on the skills girls need to be confident, competent, and compassionate individuals, now and as they continue to mature We encourage creativity and acceptance, and look to give every girl in our program the support she needs to be a positive force in her community. Every girl who joins us walks away with a better sense of how to appropriately and respectfully advocate for themselves, and to be proud of who they are.
Marcia Knorr and Nanci Mart, the adult leaders of GLL, together have over 65 years of teaching experience We are both passionate about giving girls the skills they need to make sure they have a seat at the table, wherever they want to sit. With help from the mentors, we create a weekly experience for girls in our community to come together in a fun, creative, and safe environment
The next session begins on September 30. Miss Marcia and Miss Nanci have already planned new opportunities for the girls They look forward to seeing their GLL girls and mentors return in the fall, and can’t wait to meet new participants, too! Registration for Girls Loving Life is free and is available on YWCA Hanover's website If you have any questions, please contact Nanci Mart at nmart@ywcahanover.org, or call YWCA Hanover.

The Faces Behind the Program
Who are the giving, caring people behind the success of YWCA Hanover's Safe Home program? It takes a special person to do the emotionally charged work that a program for victims of domestic violence and human trafficking requires. In this edition, we offer a glimpse behind the scenes for you to meet some of those faces behind the program.
As the Program Director of Safe Home, I work to make sure that the Safe Home team has everything it needs to feel supported and serve those impacted by domestic violence and our community Most of my work takes place behind the scenes, overseeing both direct services and all the administrative responsibilities that come with running a 24/7 victim services program I am very passionate about the work we do at Safe Home, and I am always grateful that I get to play a small role in helping someone seek safety and restart their life after experiencing abuse. In my free time, I travel all around the country competing in performance events with my three miniature wirehair dachshunds: Myrtle, Ruby, and Henri
Rachel Wonder, Client Advocate Supervisor, Hanover Office
At Safe Home, I supervise three client advocates, the transport advocate, and our York County services I also assist with training new hires, participate in after hours on-call, and provide court accompaniment as well as many other services we offer to our clients I have learned during my time with Safe Home that the best approach when advocating for victims and survivors is with empathy, nonjudgement, and genuine care A quote I have in my office: “They may forget what you said, but they will never forget how you made them feel” Truly helping someone is making them feel heard, cared for, and supported I love being part of an agency that encourages treating clients as individuals, meeting them where they are and empowering them to get where they want to go in order to heal from the trauma they have experienced For fun, I like to spend time with friends, family, and my dog Queen I also like to do Aerial Yoga, hike, and anything else that involves being outside when it is warm.
Rachel Edward, Prevention/Outreach Advocate, Gettysburg Office
At Safe Home, I work to help coordinate and provide community trainings and prevention lessons in local schools What I enjoy most about my job is showing up each day with our mission in mind and working in a field that promotes and protects peace Aligning my thoughts and actions to create an environment that supports what we stand for allows me to go home at the end of the day knowing we help make the world a better place In my time outside of work, I enjoy gardening and beekeeping Beekeeping has been rewarding mostly because it promotes physical activity and relieves stress Bees are wonderful pollinators which fertilize plants so they can grow and reproduce So, helping the environment and enjoying the sunshine are two of my most favorite things to do
Robin Wehrlin, Grants Administrator/Client Advocate Supervisor, Hanover Office
In addition to assisting with direct services at Safe Home, I also help with overseeing the many different grants which help fund Safe Home’s services Working with Safe Home has given me the opportunity to interact with members of our community, and to be able to provide support for those seeking advice and assistance In my free time, I enjoy kayaking in the summer and bird watching throughout the year.
Samantha McLoughlin, Client Advocate, Gettysburg Office
At Safe Home, I help clients navigate the civil legal system by assisting them in obtaining Protection from Abuse Orders, and help them connect with services specific for their situation What I like most about my work with Safe Home is that in this huge world with so many things going on, I can help one person with something huge in their world For self-care, when I get home after work I take off my makeup and do a face mask or some type of beauty treatment It helps “wash the day off my face” and gives me that much needed relaxation
Vanessa Hooper, Client Advocate/Volunteer Coordinator, Hanover Office
At Safe Home, I assist with the hotline and provide client services within York and Adams County I also assist with Safe Home’s Volunteer Program What I love most about my job is being able to help people within our community Knowing that I have at least helped one person within this community be safe from domestic violence and be there in their time of need is the best reward I have ever received in a job The best self-care tip I have for someone working in victims’ services is to make sure you spend time outside, whether that is walking your pet or even reading
EDITION #19 Y W M A T T E R S 8
Riley Ruments, Client Advocate, Hanover Office
I work in Safe Home’s Hanover office to assist clients who have been impacted by domestic violence What I value most about my job is the opportunity to connect with survivors and allow them to feel like their voices are heard, their experiences matter, and that they have the power to heal For self-care when working in victim services, it is important to keep in mind that while we all care deeply, our clients’ crisis is not our own; we can’t do our best work if we’re not regulating our own emotions Prioritizing our physical and mental well-being on a daily basis can contribute to being resilient in those high stress moments.
Sarah Harvey, Assistant Director, Gettysburg Office
As the Assistant Director, I am responsible for oversight of direct services When needed, I assist with direct services, cover the 24/7 hotline, and outreach and prevention activities I am also responsible for oversight of the Rapid-Rehousing Program in Adams County, and I assist with grant reporting and administration
My goal is to not only sustain, but to grow our programs and services for victims of domestic violence My favorite part about my job is being able to serve the community that I live in As an Adams County resident, I feel honored to be part of creating a better community in which domestic violence victims are supported and believed For fun, I enjoy spending time outdoors with my family and pets, reading, and taking care of my many houseplants!
Samantha Hicks, Client Advocate, Hanover Office
I am a Client Advocate at Safe Home I work to assist clients with a variety of services to help them find safety and stability There are several things I like about working at Safe Home, but the thing I enjoy the most is working with different people Every client is different and playing a small role in helping them in their time of need is very rewarding For fun outside of work, I enjoy going to the movies This is my go to when I feel like I need a bit of time to myself
Ronald Hansford, Transportation Advocate, Hanover Office
I transport Safe Home clients to appointments with advocates at both the Hanover and Gettysburg offices, to shelters, and to counseling sessions, as well as overseeing the maintenance of Safe Home’s vehicle The most challenging but enjoyable portion of my job is attempting to encourage clients that are hurting by giving them hope, making them feel comfortable, or talking with clients that just want someone with which to talk. In my free time, I enjoy walking at Codorus Sate Park
Mandi Howell, Client Advocate Supervisor, Gettysburg Office
My role at Safe Home is to supervise our Adams County team and services. The thing I like most about my job is seeing client growth. We often meet clients in their most vulnerable state and watching them grow and gain autonomy is a tremendous motivator! Outside of work, you will either find me on an adventure with my amazing four year old son or reading I absolutely love to read psychological thrillers!
Kelly Clancy, Housing Advocate, Gettysburg Office
I work in Safe Home’s Rapid Rehousing Program to help clients work toward housing stability My favorite thing about my job is helping people finally find a sense of safety and security in a home of their own My best self-care tip for someone working in victim services is to set boundaries and limits, specifically regarding the scope of our role It is important to know that we can’t do everything for everyone and not to take on that responsibility
Danielle Ott, Client Advocate, Gettysburg Office
I work with those impacted by domestic violence in Safe Home’s Gettysburg office I like to help others, so what I like most about my job is the reward of making a difference in someone’s life That is an irreplaceable feeling.
Lee Bartlett, Client Advocate, Gettysburg Office
I have volunteered and worked at Safe Home for around eight years I’ve had several jobs and I have to say that I like this one more than I liked all the others put together. I love having the ability to help others, and having such a caring, supportive, and kind family of coworkers improves the job even more In such an emotionally charged job, we could easily get overwhelmed by the enormity of the number of our clients, both actual and potential My self-care tip is to remember the starfish story: A young girl walked along the beach throwing washed up starfish back into the water An older man said, “It doesn’t matter how many you throw back; you can’t save them all” The little girl said, “It matters to the ones I do throw back” The takeaway: You can’t save everyone, but you matter to the ones you do save
Y W M A T T E R S 9 SUMMER 2023 EDITION #19
2023 is on its way to being a great year here at YWCA Hanover! We are excited to once again offer you numerous ways to make a difference in your community by joining us as a participant or donor at our 2023 Events.
YWCA Hanover will host our nd Annual Par-TEE On Golf Outing
ne 9, 2023 - a “Shotgun” start at 12 noon. This event is intended for women with no golf experience at all!
We offer a free golf lesson to get you started and have a women’s golf club expert available to show you what club would work best for you.
For our serious golfers who provided great feedback in our post-event survey: we heard you. This year, we are including an experienced 9 holes who those who love the game and prefer to play with other experienced golfers.
Our inaugural year was one for the books, with lots of laughter and new golfers giving testimonials of how this event impacted their life in many ways.
Katie Karnas with Phoenix Physical Therapy sent us a video of how this event impacted her not only personally, but also professionally (video can be seen on YWCA Hanover’s Facebook Page)
In May of 2022, Katie opened her Phoenix Physical Therapy clinic and thought she would take a chance as a Par-TEE On Hole Sponsor just to get involved Katie expressed that she was nervous about this because she didn’t know anyone. She found that everyone at the Par-TEE On Golf Outing was so kind and welcoming. Katie was paired with three other women who were, in her words, “absolutely awesome” The day was filled with multiple networking opportunities, fun games on the course, no pressure golfing for someone who has never golfed before, prizes, and so much more This event opened so many doors for Katie, and she expressed that the Par-TEE On Golf Outing will always be near and dear to her heart. We are thankful for Katie and all the “First Timers” who came out of their comfort zone to try something new with a group of like-minded ladies.
Women of Hanover Network is offered through YWCA Hanover three times a year and gives women in our community another opportunity to connect in a relaxing atmosphere. Networking is key for many businesswomen It is through events such as these that they can find a wealth of resources to learn something new and improve their business or themselves.
Each of the Women of Hanover Networking events is sponsored by a local business, giving them the opportunity to speak to each of the attendees. This ultimately helps them build their businesses, too, with women in the room who may not have known of their services
