Walk A Mile in Her Shoes CELEBRATING THE 10TH ANNIVERSARY FALL 2022 EDITION #17

The funds raised during the Walk A Mile event support Safe Home’s life saving services These services include emergency shelter, assistance with filing Protection from Abuse (PFA) orders, advocacy throughout the court process and beyond, housing assistance, case management, empowerment counseling, therapy referrals, and connecting the clients we serve to other community partners and resources Safe Home advocates work tirelessly to provide these services not only during normal business hours, but also throughout the night and early morning hours. They meet clients at the hospital to be a support, file emergency protection from abuse orders, work with law enforcement and others and provide emergency shelter and transportation As Safe Home

August 2022 marked the 10th anniversary of YWCA Hanover Safe Home’s Walk A Mile in Her Shoes (WAM) event

Each year our agency’s supporters, community members, friends, and family members join together for a fun evening of music, food, and festivities to raise funds for Safe Home’s crucial and life saving work

By Rachel Wonder, Safe Home Supervising Advocate

Although much of Safe Home’s funding comes from grants, these funds do not always cover all of the needs of the individuals we serve Fundraising is crucial to our ability to provide quality services to each person that calls our hotline or walks through our door. The economic impact of abuse on a survivor can be devastating and a huge barrier which prevents many from seeking help Many of Safe Home’s clients experience loss of income, stable housing, transportation, childcare, and isolation from support systems that most of us take for granted. The need and availability of economic support is frequently the difference between a victim staying in an abusive situation or taking the first steps towards a better life for themselves and their family Each person’s journey may look a little different, but Safe Home’s end goal is always the same: to help our clients restore their hope, regain their independence, and move forward to a place of safety and peace

Through the years, we have endured the August heat, storms, and broken heels, but it is always worth all the work, sweat, and calamities to walk together to support the survivors that come through our door As an agency, we have witnessed the growth of the event that is now the single largest fundraising event for Safe Home In 2021, the community and our supporters came together to raise $77,550.12 to support victims of domestic violence and human trafficking in our local community We are so humbled and thankful for the overwhelming response from everyone that chose to donate to our cause and look forward to continued growth and support for this worthwhile and fun event.

Y W M A T T E R S 5

In addition to the life saving funds raised during the Walk A Mile event, the event itself and the sight of all our supporters out walking as a large group is an important show of support from the Hanover community. Victims of domestic violence are frequently told either directly or through the actions of their abusers that they do not matter and that no one cares or will assist them Community support is crucial for survivors to feel important, seen, and cared for, especially when they have no other support systems in place Support from the community can also give strength to move from the place of victim to survivor; to stand tall and say “enough” and come out the other side stronger and empowered Community support, acknowledgment of the severity of the problem, and wanting to help minimizes the stigma of abuse, such as victim blaming, and moves into a place of acting and uniting together for crucial change that spans beyond our local neighborhoods.

We are eternally grateful for our community and the ongoing support we receive, and truly could not do the work we do without it

From all of us at Safe Home and on behalf of the nearly 1,500 survivors we assist each year, thank you for being a such an integral part of the work we do. For more information about the services of Safe Home or to find new opportunities to support the mission of YWCA Hanover & Safe Home, please visit our webpage at

continues to grow and expand our services, we are exploring avenues of growth that we could not have imagined in the past, but with the funds we raised with Walk A Mile, those dreams are that much closer to a reality

If you are interested in participating in or sponsoring this fun event, please contact Janise Bankard at jbankard@YWCAHanover org and SAVE THE DATE for our 2nd Annual Par Tee On Golf Outing June 9, 2023 with a Shotgun start at 1:30pm.

“But unfortunately, very few of those golfers are women, which means women are missing out on participating in an important space when it comes to moving ahead professionally The good news is that more women are showing up to prove that they are every bit as competent at golf and business, building those important connections in the process As more women began to enjoy golf alongside their male counterparts, they are showing that they have the right stuff both on and off the green.”

The day was filled with fun games on each of the 9 holes, such as “Putting Blind with the use of a Covid Mask”, “Knee Putt” (putting on the green on your knees), and “Chuck It” (throwing the ball across a stream instead of hitting it). These games and more kept our participating golfers chuckling the entire afternoon

6

According to Totally Driven, a golf blog, “Women’s participation in golf in many ways represents their access to the same opportunities as men For millions of American business professionals, golf is more than just a fun pastime It's also an important place to make and build important connections that give them that professional edge. In fact, about 90% of Fortune 500 executives are golfers and a quarter of America's 25 million golfers are high level business executives

Supporting the YWCA Mission INVESTING IN THE HANOVER COMMUNITY FALL 2022 EDITION #17

YWCA Hanover has many opportunities to get involved throughout the year such as our Annual Giving Campaign that kicks off each year in April, Walk A Mile in Her Shoes held annually the second Friday in August, and our EMERGE Women’s Conference in the 2nd week in October These events provide necessary funding to support all the programming offered by YWCA Hanover We are always looking for new ideas to not only support our mission and programs, but also to help support our community This year, we gave women in the area the opportunity to experience the game of golf with the Inaugural “Par Tee On Golf Outing” on June 9th at The Bridges Golf Club

The Par Tee On Golf Outing certainly gave women in our community the opportunity to prove themselves in a non judgmental and fun environment, while also leaving them with a feeling of accomplishment

The GLL program focuses on five tenets created to help our participants become confident, compassionate, and community oriented: Love your soul Love your body Love others Love learning and growing Love life week, our lessons are planned to provide whole group, small group, and individual opportunities for the girls to think about our message and learn how to incorporate the skills of resilience and grit into their daily lives Our activities encourage the girls to try new things and require cooperation and flexibility activities are geared towards our younger girls, but we couldn’t do what we do without our mentors: high school girls who help us implement our lessons and develop relationships with and between our participants Our program would not be as effective or fun without them

While our tenets remain the same, our lessons change every session, so if your daughter/granddaughter/niece/neighbor has participated before, she will be doing new activities while reinforcing our message of personal strength and integrity If the important girl in your life hasn’t tried our program, now is the time to sign up!
