The next session of Girls Loving Life is only a few weeks away: soon it’ll be time to get together to continue our work internalizing the five awesome tenets of the program: love yourself, love others, love learning and growing, love your body, and love life.
Each GLL participant gets her very own bullet journal. It's our go-to tool for diving into the week's topics, reflecting on them, and jotting down all those feelings and thoughts And you know what? Our girls are totally nailing it! They share how they put our lessons into action, and we're so pumped to see our message spreading like wildfire!
At GLL, we're all about building confident, competent, and compassionate individuals who are ready to take on the world! We focus on creativity and acceptance, and our mission is to give every girl the support she needs to be a positive force in
Ms Marcia Knorr and Mrs Nanci Mart, the adult leaders, bring over 65 years of teaching experience to the table Their goal is to give girls the skills needed to take charge and get a seat wherever they want to be With GLL’s amazing mentors, they create a weekly playground of fun, creativity, and safety for all the awesome girls in our community.
The next session kicks off on September 30, 2023, and we're already pumped! Miss Marcia and Miss Nanci can't wait to see their GLL girls and mentors back in action. And hey, if you're new, come on over! We're open to fresh faces, and you're going to love it here!
Oh, did we mention it's free? Yup, no strings attached! Just head over to YWCA Hanover's website and sign up If you have any questions, drop a line to Nanci Mart at nmart@ywcahanover.org or give us a ring at YWCA Hanover

"Race, romance, and family converge in this riveting novel that transplants Romeo and Juliet to a bitterly segregated Texas town Includes a fascinating author's note detailing the process of research and writing about voices that have largely been excluded from historical accounts "
Ashley Hope Pérez takes the facts of the 1937 New London school explosion, the worst school disaster in American history, as a backdrop for a riveting novel about segregation, love, family, and the forces that destroy people ©2015 Ashley Hope Pérez
Our spring Coffee-Hour Discussion Groups were well-received by the folks who dropped by to chat In fact, we had such good conversations that we thought we would do it again!
These informal drop-in discussions over coffee and snacks allow us a relaxed opportunity to discuss topics on social injustice, racism, and the YWCA’s overall mission All sessions are open to the public
Please join us at any of the following locations and times for our next series of Coffee Chats. YWCA Hanover provides discussion materials and a discussion leader Attendees purchase their own coffee and snacks, if desired

Leaving an abusive relationship only begins the healing process and survivors often bring more baggage than just their belongings Survivors frequently continue to face many barriers to safety and empowerment after leaving an abusive situation They can face Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, lack of housing, financial difficulties, physical recovery and reclaiming their sense of self-worth
YWCA Hanover Safe Home recognizes that the effects of abuse and violence can linger for months and even years after the end of an abusive relationship This lingering trauma can perpetuate the continuing cycle of abuse As a result, many survivors may enter into another abusive relationship because they don’t realize that they deserve, and can have, better. Survivors often need help in breaking the chain that takes them from one abusive relationship to another Building selfesteem is critical to that process, and it’s done by developing appropriate supports and finding encouragement to keep moving forward
To help survivors heal, recover, and grow, YWCA Hanover Safe Home offers a Support Group on Thursday nights at 7 pm in the Gettysburg office The purpose of the support group is to help survivors find the supports they need to break the cycle of abuse During support group meetings, participants share their stories, their progress, and the resources they have found useful The meetings last approximately an hour and include a topic for discussion as well as sharing among the participants The topics range from dealing with PTSD and healthy boundaries to recognizing the effects of domestic violence and abuse on the survivors’ children
Staff members and volunteers from Safe Home serve as facilitators who help direct the flow of the session and provide articles and resources If a participant suggests a topic, the facilitators will locate and share resources to cover that topic.
While the participants deal with painful, frightening, and sometimes triggering matters, they manage to work in humor and a good deal of laughter. The group provides a judgement-free environment as well as a welcoming, supportive, and encouraging vibe Participants value the opportunity to spend time among others who genuinely know how they feel and to learn from them. They celebrate each other’s successes and encourage one another to keep trying when they take a step back
Survivors interested in becoming part of the group may call Safe Home’s 24/7 hotline at 717-632-0007 for more information New participants may have to meet briefly with an advocate to complete a brief intake process For English language learners or hearingimpa

The School Age Learning Academy is for children who are in kindergarten through sixth grade They have had a fun, exciting, and busy summer!
We have taken weekly field trips to provide fun and educational opportunities to our students We have gone kayaking at Codorus, swimming at the Littlestown pool, skating, bowling, and exploring the Gettysburg battlefield
In addition, we have visited Laurel Lake, the Red Lion Splash Pad, Lake Tobias, the York Revs baseball game, and local state parks and playgrounds
Even with all this excitement, we managed to squeeze in ice cream trips and visits to local businesses.
This summer, school age kids also had a STEM program where they were taught a STEM lesson once a week Our school age kids use these STEM materials to learn the foundations of science, technology, engineering, and math careers. The STEM center provides interactive lessons that emphasize collaboration and critical thinking skills

is offered by YWCA Hanover throughout the year and gives women in our community another opportunity to connect in a relaxing atmosphere Networking is a key for many business women in our community
It is through events such as these that women can find a wealth of resources to learn something new and improve their business or themselves
Each of the Women of Hanover networking events is sponsored by local businesses, giving them the opportunity to speak to each of these attendees. This ultimately helps them build their businesses, too, with women in the room who may not have known of their services. If you would like to sponsor an event, please contact Janise Bankard at jbankard@ywcahanover.org for more information.
Here are some pictures from our Women of Hanover Networking events that were held this year.
We hope you will join us for the next FREE networking event. Save the Date for:
• Wednesday, September 20, 2023, at The Markets of Hanover, sponsored by Fuhrman Creative
• Wednesday, November 15, 2023, sponsored by bare Med Spa at their location, 17 Carlisle Street, Hanover
