PHASE 01

KITH : SPACES THROUGH STORYTELLING

Phase 01

My topic is ab named Kwo express I aim to conve have slow

Most importantly, the shop's current owner, Mr. Kwong Kam Lau, is the third generation at the helm. This year marks the 110th anniversary of the shop. He took over the business in his twenties, and now he is 75 years old. He told me that in this fast-paced era, clothes have become fast-moving consumer goods, especially after COVID-19, and his business has been struggling. However, he believes that handmade items are more elegant, durable, and should not be forgotten.

Mr. Kwong has received many honors and mentioned that when he was younger, he was appointed as a special tailor for the Malaysian royal family. Many high-ranking officials also came to him for custom-made clothes. At that time, people truly valued having a set of handmade custom clothing. He’s not sure when it started, but such customers have become fewer and fewer. Therefore, in the latter part, I show that people today prefer brands and tend to buy branded clothes from malls or online.

Phase 01

In my painting, I depict Mr. Kwong slowly opening the fabric in front of him, revealing the evolution of tailoring from hand-woven fabric to today's machine-made fabric, and from hand-measured fabric to the current trend of online shopping and selecting pre-made sizes.

I asked him if he felt that times had really changed, and he replied that he was getting old and could hardly continue working. Even his children don't want to become tailors because they wouldn't choose custom-made clothes for themselves. His craft is on the brink of being lost. He mentioned that when he went to KLCC with his children, he saw people carrying various shopping bags, looking very happy, just like I depicted in my painting. But now, he can no longer see the faces of his customers in his shop.

PHASE 02

POSSIBILITY ARCHITECTURE- LIVE PROJECT

Phase 02

As an extension of the first phase, students will work in groups to propose an exploratory site project. The scope of the project is determined by you and your team, allowing for a wide range of possibilities related to exploratory drawings.

These concepts should directly address the site's needs and can reflect various design approaches, drawing inspiration from, but not limited to, whimsical, social, economic, speculative, political, or poetic perspectives. Each design intention must be closely connected to the context of the site.

The goal is to develop design possibilities that respond to the REXKL context through spatial experiences, fostering a vibrant and creative city by integrating interior architecture with cultural appreciation.

Phase 2 Reflection

In this team project, I was responsible for video documentation. Through the lens, I witnessed the dedication and hard work of every team member, from the initial brainstorming sessions to the final presentation, with each stage reflecting our collective effort. During filming, I gained a deeper appreciation for the importance of collaboration and communication, which were essential to our project's success.

In the editing process, I aimed to highlight every key moment, capturing the creativity and unity of our team. This experience not only enhanced my video production skills but also deepened my understanding of the value in documenting and sharing the efforts of others.

PHASE 03

GLIMPSES OF KITH

Glimpses Of Kith

In my Phase 3 project, I created a community for tailors and textile crafts called SEWLAB. This is an open-plan space dedicated to preserving and celebrating the rich heritage of textile craftsmanship. Since people have gradually forgotten the benefits of handmade clothes, I wanted to design a place for the public to learn the art of making clothes by hand, attracting different groups of people and providing them with opportunities to learn.

Weave District & Needle And Bu

We start here with the board titled WEAVE DISTRICT, which focuses on fabric weaving. I believe it's crucial to understand where the fabric comes from before making a garment, so there's a traditional loom and a fabric conveyor belt. The bottom half is titled NEEDLE & BUTTON, which is dedicated to the production of needles, threads, and buttons. This area will have a more modern design. Here, people can straighten the thread, roll it onto a cotton spool, and then use it directly for tailoring or hand sewing.

I designed a space specifically for buttons, where people can take small bowls from hollowed-out squares on the side. By turning a switch, they can drop the buttons they need from a machine that resembles a soft drink dispenser.

Tailor Town

The content of this board is TAILOR TOWN, which specifically focuses on the tailor's area. The table in this area is directly connected to the sewing machine's pedal. When you step on the pedal, you can sew your clothes right here. This allows people to start sewing immediately after taking measurements.

I designed a circular display of different fabrics in this area, providing people with various choices, such as denim, silk, cotton, and more. This space is meant for people to explore, and they can visit this area while making beautiful clothes.

The Dye Hub

The content of this board is Tie Dyehub, which focuses on the tie-dye area. The origin of tie-dye comes from my hometown, and it is a process very similar to batik.

Tie-dye fabric is unique, and no two tie-dye fabrics in the world are identical. After applying the paint, and once it's cleaned and filtered, the fabric forms a very natural shape through different folds. I designed a paint station here, where various pigments are available for people to choose from. After the cloth is dyed, it can be washed, filtered, and then hung on a conveyor belt to dry, resulting in a truly unique piece of fabric.

Floor Plan, Section & Perspective

The last part is my plan and section. For this semester's project, I chose LIGHT CAPTURE as my architectural concept. So far, I have only completed the second floor of the building, and I have represented it from different angles. This includes the various perspectives visible from each of my installations and the overall appearance of the building.

Phase 3 Model

Finally, for the model in Phase 3, I gained a deep understanding of tailoring this semester, so I chose to use fabric and an antique sewing machine to display my model. On the fabric, I showcased the characteristics of all my areas, sewing real buttons and pieces of cloth to represent them.

Reflection

This semester, I gained a deeper understanding and insight into interior architecture design. Each project presented its own challenges, from the initial conceptualization to the final execution, allowing me to fully apply the knowledge and skills acquired in class.

Throughout the design process, I learned how to translate abstract design ideas into concrete spatial layouts while gaining practical experience in material selection, lighting, and color coordination. These assignments not only enhanced my design thinking and technical abilities but also highlighted the importance of teamwork and how to efficiently complete tasks within a limited time frame.

Additionally, this experience has made me more attentive to details, and I will focus more on balancing innovation and functionality in my future designs. I am excited about the road ahead and feel more confident in my chosen path of study.
