A PRESERVATION STARTS at HOME

s we go to press on our annual issue all about homes—it strikes me, that this issue has a lot of preservation talk as well. Whether it’s preserving a home or a historic barn; preserving old Franklin traditions via a newfangled party; the restorative health rituals of a salt spa; or the renovation of a big city hotel giving it a whole new life…lots of people in our community love to preserve things.

Preservation, as a catchword, has been one that has led Williamson County through the tough times when it became obvious our resources needed to be preserved and now in the glory days as a booming and nationally recognized place. We have the benefit of both the past and the future in everything we do here.

I can always find a way to equate something to another in my own daily life, if I work hard enough at it—but this one isn’t so hard. Preserving space, places and home is one of

the most important things to me. I am blessed to have my entire immediate family within no more than a few miles of each other. My children’s schools, activities and friends are all within that space too. Our church, our business, our places to go and be, all reside here within this preserved space of our lives.

It’s a blessing to grow up somewhere and then also grow in life there. I have seen much change, growth, the preserving of things, and the loss of some things. I am lucky to have grown up in a preservation community of mentors and people much smarter than I, who helped me to see just why tree-lined lanes are still important and buildings saved with purpose shouldn’t just be sold away for a profit.

I know that we can grow smart and still preserve things. And I understand that sometimes decision-makers have to impart some change for the greater good. It’s all a balancing act, isn’t it? And, of course, sometimes the balance

MOVED WE HAVE

While we’re no longer operating a storefront, Always in Bloom is still here to serve you— now with even more attentional and personal care. We’re focusing on what matters most— beautiful, custom floral designs for life’s tender and joyful occasions.

“Let us save what remains: not by vaults and locks which fence them from the public eye and use in consigning them to the waste of time, but by such a multiplication of copies, as shall place them beyond the reach of accident.”

is not in our favor, and we must move on to the next project to be passionate about.

The good news is you can always be passionate about Williamson County. Even when it feels like something may be amiss, I can rest assured in the knowledge that some really wise people will figure out how to eliminate the narrative, demand transparency and communicate effectively and respectfully with everyone to get something done. It has been happening here for decades, and I imagine that names, faces, and titles may come and go, but the goal will be ever the same: Preserve the things that truly matter all around you, and your life will forever be blessed.

THE BENEFITS OF SALT & SAUNA

WOODHOUSE SPA FRANKLIN

At Woodhouse Spa Franklin, wellness is a way of life. Every element of the experience, from the moment you step through the doors, is designed to help you breathe more deeply, move more slowly, and feel more connected to yourself. Perhaps no offerings reflect that mission more than the spa’s signature Salt Room and Infrared Sauna, two restorative rituals available as a luxurious add-on to any massage, facial, or treatment.

Rooted in centuries of healing tradition, these experiences have been thoughtfully modernized and seamlessly integrated into the spa journey. Whether you’re carving out time for your self-care or introducing a loved one to the gift of pause, salt and sauna offer a host of benefits that go far beyond relaxation.

HALOTHERAPY SALT ROOM:

A Breath of Fresh Air

Halotherapy, also known as dry salt therapy, has long been recognized for its ability to support respiratory health and calm the nervous system. In the tranquil salt room at Woodhouse Franklin, guests are invited to recline and simply breathe deeply while pharmaceutical-grade salt is softly dispersed into the air.

The result? Clearer airways, soothed skin, and a deep sense of grounding. The experience is particularly beneficial for those navigating seasonal allergies, asthma or stress, and it’s a beautiful way to begin or end your time at the spa.

WELLNESS, Elevated

INFRARED SAUNA: Heat with Intention

Unlike traditional saunas, Woodhouse’s infrared sauna gently warms the body from within, helping to increase circulation, reduce inflammation, ease sore muscles, and promote natural detoxification. The result is a gentle, restorative sweat that leaves you feeling both lighter and deeply restored.

Used before a massage, it helps prepare the body for deeper work. As a post-facial add-on, it amplifies that post-treatment glow. And on its own, it serves as a meditative pause from the demands of daily life.

These experiences may be small in duration, but they deliver a lasting impact. That’s what Woodhouse Spa Franklin is known for: intentional, elevated care that meets you exactly where you are.

Whether you’re recovering from the pace of summer travel, recalibrating your wellness routine, or simply carving out a moment to recharge salt and sauna are gentle yet powerful ways to support your body and mind.

Book a midweek appointment and enjoy complimentary salt or sauna access with your facial or massage available Monday through Wednesday at the Franklin location as part of their Weekday Wellness offering.

Ready to restore from the inside out? Your sanctuary awaits at Woodhouse Spa Franklin. Visit franklin.woodhousespas.com to book your experience, call 615.515.9565 or follow along on Instagram at @woodhousefranklin. Whether it’s a solo escape or a group celebration, every detail is designed to help you relax, reconnect and renew.

CARING FOR THE

ENCOURAGING ATHLETES & FAMILIES TO PRIORITIZE EMOTIONAL RECOVERY AS MUCH AS PHYSICAL HEALING

WITH WILLIAMSON HEALTH

or student-athletes, a torn ACL or dislocated shoulder can end a season—but the emotional fallout can last even longer.

“Many times we first meet a patient at the point of their greatest disappointment,” said Colin Looney, M.D., an orthopaedic surgeon at Bone and Joint Institute of Tennessee, part of the Williamson Health regional healthcare system. “We have to remind our patients that this is a season-ending injury, not a career-ending injury.”

Dr. Looney joined fellow panelists, Allen Sills, M.D., chief medical officer of the NFL, and former Major League Baseball player Ben Zobrist, founder of Champion Forward, at the recent “Connect. Compete. Care.” event hosted by the Williamson Health Foundation at Bone and Joint Institute. The event highlighted the often-overlooked mental health challenges athletes face when sidelined by injury.

Ben, the 2016 World Series MVP, spoke about the pressure of the spotlight—and its toll on mental health.

“That forced me into a scenario where I had to deal with a lot more than I expected,” Ben said, reflecting on his 2016 MVP nod. “It felt like a weight that I had to carry where I wanted to say yes to everything, and I didn’t have healthy boundaries.”

Mental and emotional health in recovery is vital for every athlete, but especially critical when identity is tied to performance.

“Fifty percent of athletes will have a major depressive episode while recovering from an injury,” Dr. Looney said.

Ben called this a “hero to human” moment. In these situations, the panelists stressed the importance of focusing on hope.

“Hope is everything we do in medicine,” said Dr. Sills, professor of neurological surgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and a practicing neurosurgeon. “It is an essential part of recovery, and

Ben Zobrist at the recent “Connect. Compete. Care.” event hosted by the Williamson Health Foundation at Bone and Joint Institute.

hope gets us out of bed every day to do the things that we do.”

Dr. Looney, a former two-sport collegiate athlete and current team physician for Battle Ground Academy and Centennial High School in Franklin, encouraged athletes healing from an injury to set smaller, short-term goals that allow them to celebrate progress along the way.

“If all you’re thinking about is getting back on the field in nine months, that’s overwhelming,” he said.

He also encouraged athletes and parents to adopt a collaborative team approach, fostering connections that enable them to speak up if an athlete appears to be struggling. An “ecosystem of care” should include parents, athletes, and care team members—physical therapists, physicians, coaches and athletic trainers—invested in the whole patient.

“Everybody in the sports community needs to have a little bit of awareness and sensitivity,” Dr. Sills said. “You don’t have to be a mental health expert to say, ‘You know what? It looks like that kid’s struggling. Something’s going on there. Let’s make sure to connect them to someone.’”

That includes recognizing signs of depression—such as mood swings, fatigue, appetite changes or withdrawal—and helping athletes and parents develop a “growth mindset” and find ways to “regulate emotions,” according to Ben.

“We have to talk to ourselves in a positive way, and sometimes as parents we have to turn around their negative self-talk and say, ‘Hey, you know, you’re OK,’” he said.

With the right support, a season-ending injury doesn’t have to be the end of the story—it can be the moment an athlete discovers new strengths, deeper resilience and a healthier perspective. THE NEW MEANING NOURISHMENT OF

WHY JOY, REST & CONNECTION MATTER JUST AS MUCH AS WHAT’S ON YOUR PLATE

When you hear the word “nourishment,” you probably think of a plate overflowing with colorful vegetables, ancient grains, and grilled chicken or tofu. And you’d be right—that definitely falls under the category of physical nourishment. But what if I told you your mind, heart, and soul also need to be nourished? When was the last time you felt deeply nourished—not just full, but whole?

Physical fuel and whole-self nourishment, while intertwined, are two different things. Food and fluids are fuel for our bodies. Some foods fuel us better than others, but food itself isn’t good or bad—it just is. And because we aren’t only physical beings, we need more than physical nourishment.

Whole-self nourishment also comes from what we consume in other ways: books, television, social media, the company we keep, even the ideas we engage with. The way we move our bodies and how much rest we allow ourselves both play a role too.

In my Energize Your Life™ program, I teach clients through the Golden Flow Framework™—Nourish, Move, Rest, Repeat—how to fuel themselves in ways that go beyond food. We are all unique, with passions and interests that make us who we are. Doesn’t it make sense that our nourishment should be unique too?

Looking beyond food to nourish yourself can lead to a more fulfilling life of joy and sustainable energy. Nourishment includes activities that fuel creativity, connection, and resilience: laughter and meaningful conversation (emotional nourishment), learning, journaling, or quiet reflection (mental nourishment), time in nature, prayer, or acts of service (spiritual nourishment), and movement or restorative rest (physical-but-not-food nourishment).

Why does this matter? Because relying only on caffeine, sugar, or sheer willpower to push through fatigue creates energy leaks. Whole-self nourishment, on the other hand, restores resilience, boosts self-motivation, and supports long-term well-being.

Picture this: It’s 2:30pm and your eyelids are drooping. Do you grab a sugary coffee that puts you on the blood sugar roller coaster? Or could you try a different plan—stretching, taking a short walk, or changing your environment? Those choices create clarity and energy without the crash.

So how do you know what nourishes you best? The first step is noticing. We often live on autopilot and miss the connections between what we’re consuming—whether food, content, or conversation—and how it makes us feel. Start checking in with yourself a few times a day. Is there a link between what you ate, read, or experienced and your mood or energy?

If you want to take it further, pull out your journal and write about which foods, activities, or people leave you feeling lighter and more alive. Create a Joy or Nourishment Menu and post it somewhere visible. Choose one nourishing activity to weave into your daily or weekly routine.

Nourishment isn’t indulgence—it’s essential fuel for mind, body, and soul. If you’re a woman feeling like you haven’t been nourished in a while, I see you. If you’re ready to create energy from the inside out and discover what truly nourishes you, join me in the upcoming Energize Your Life Masterclass. Visit goldenhourcoaching.com/energize-your-lifemasterclass to learn more and save your spot.

We are all unique, with passions and interests that make us who we are. Doesn’t it make sense that our nourishment should be unique too?

This home is a quiet dialogue between European symmetry and Japanese restraint — a balance of structure and softness. Steep gabled rooflines and formal proportions ground the architecture in timeless tradition, while natural materials and weathered finishes introduce warmth and a lived-in authenticity rooted in Wabi Sabi principles.

INSIDE THE FOYER:

The intentional placement of expansive floor-set windows provides a connection with the exterior while bathing the interior with natural light. The result is a home that feels both intentional and effortless—calmly composed, light-washed, and deeply connected to its natural surroundings. The design harmonizes the joyful energy of color with the soulful, organic beauty of wabi-sabi. Rooted in the Japanese philosophy of embracing transience and imperfection, the design celebrates authenticity, nature, and simplicity—infused with a vibrant, contemporary twist.

Natural materials like weathered wood, zellige tile, and linen are paired with a rich, earthy color palette accented by pops of vivid hues — ochre, indigo, oxblood and moss— to create warmth and personality. Patina, texture, and asymmetry are embraced, allowing each object and surface to tell a story over time.

BEST ALL AROUND A

MARTY WARREN ON FAMILY, FAITH AND THE BUSINESS OF BUILDING COMMUNITY

“Always carve out the hours needed in each day to be with your family. Have a plan and stick to it. Surround yourself with associates and mentors who prompt you to improve and become more successful.”

s Summer comes to a close, I am excited to welcome the cooler mornings, the beautiful evening skies, my children’s excitement of “back to school,” and the beginning of football season. It is also an exciting time for our annual Real Estate & Home issue and the opportunity to have Mr. Marty Warren as our A SOUTHERN GENTLEMAN IS guest. I remember it like it was yesterday, though it was years ago, the first time I had the pleasure of meeting Marty. I recall a contagious smile, larger-than-life personality and an amazing bow tie. As with many of our guests, Marty exudes the definition of a Southern Gentleman. Caring, giving, humble and wise. He also knows a thing or two about Real Estate. I had to ask a few questions and learn more from and about Marty.

What does being a Southern Gentleman mean to you?

It means being committed to loving and caring deeply for your family. It also means treating everyone you encounter with respect and showing kindness to others in every aspect of life. Additionally, a Southern Gentleman contributes to the betterment of his community through delivery of the best in his daily business activities, and through his support of his chosen community events and interests.

How do you incorporate these qualities into your everyday life?

Through a dynamic, personal and business relationship with my wife, Nancy, with whom I have worked side by side over the past thirty-eight years, and with our daughter, Wendy, her husband, Doug, and my only grandchild, Mary Wallis Bradley. My family is the key to my success and happiness. I am so thankful for all of them. Professionally, it means a total commitment to each client and working toward ensuring they have the best journey possible in purchasing or selling a residential property.

Were there any specific influences or role models who shaped your view of what it means to be a Southern Gentleman?

In the small town where I was reared, there was a gentleman named Roper Fields. Mr. Fields owned a general insurance agency in town whose office was located on one of the major streets. I can see Mr. Fields now, appearing in his suit and tie as he walked down the street. He was well respected and thought highly of by everyone in town. He was successful, enjoyed a strong family relationship, and contributed to the community with involvement in his church throughout his lifetime.

How long have you been in real estate, and what inspired you to do so?

This is the thirty-eighth year of my residential real estate career. When friends of Nancy and mine would move to Greater Nashville, those friends would always say, “call Marty or Nancy, they know all of the neighborhoods and can share a wealth of knowledge about each.” We would always be kind and helpful and share our information with friends about those neighborhoods we liked so much. What inspired us? Our love for residential property and the fun and excitement each move to a new home brought to us.

How has the real estate market changed since you began?

How long do you have? Technology arrived! In 1990, Realtors received a large, printed book (Our MLS Book) every two weeks, listing existing homes for sale in our area. As of that year, there was no MLS (Realtracs) available online. No email. No text messaging. Only if you were fortunate, you owned a very large cell phone. If you were the buyer’s agent, you would phone the seller’s agent to obtain permission to show the property. The introduction of the internet advanced the instant availability of information relative to all things associated with homes for sale to everyone.

What are the key things to look for when buying a new home, and what challenges are there for new first-time home buyers?

The key item is location. Always will be. Following that would be potential resale, quality of construction, reputation of the builder, and, very important, the question, “Will you be happy coming home here every day in the coming years?” Challenges are, as of this date, limited inventory and higher interest rates.

What advice would you give to your younger self or to today’s younger generation to help them reach their potential and be the best they can be, both in life and in business?

Always carve out the hours needed in each day to be with your family. Have a plan and stick

to it. Surround yourself with associates and mentors who prompt you to improve and become more successful. Strive for that award of  “BEST ALL AROUND” in all that you do. Treat your clients with respect and place more emphasis on personal communication, rather than relying exclusively on emails and text messaging.

Do you feel that attire makes a difference for a Gentleman in their everyday, as well as on special occasions?

Definitely. Often, I receive random compliments from others on how I dress. This particularly happens to both Nancy and to me when we are together. I believe the way you dress reflects greatly how you want to project yourself to others. I know and understand we live in a very casual world; however, I see a shift back to more professional dress standards. And, yes, always look your best at special occasions with a great jacket, suit and tie. And purchase a navy suit and a black suit.

What are your hobbies, activities and favorite pastimes?

Several days a week, you will find me at Fit2 in Westhaven working through a fifty-minute or so exercise program or walking in my community of Westhaven (always with Nancy). I enjoy biking along 30A when at the beach at our small cottage (always with Nancy here too)! TRAVEL! Germany, Portugal, France, Italy, Greece, the Adriatic, the Mediterranean, Thailand, Cambodia, Singapore, Bali and Lombok in Indonesia, and Hawaii are all wonderful places I have enjoyed.

Tell us about your philanthropic endeavors and why you feel it is important to give back. Giving provides a boomerang effect. Seeing the good that your gifts bring to others makes your heart happy! My major support goes to our wonderful local theater company, StudioTenn. Additional support goes to Franklin First United Methodist Church and to Point Washington United Methodist Church, both of which bring and provide so many great programs for each of their respective communities.

I was told long ago “surround yourself with the winners” and “learn from those you want to be like.” Let’s all take away some wisdom from Marty. Put family first and give thanks for all our blessings. Let’s aim for that award of “BEST ALL AROUND.”

HOME, COMMUNITY & INTEGRITY

he “I Am Williamson” column features individuals in Williamson County who are known and unknown as staples of our community, doing good, being seen and unseen, and exuding Williamson County. This month, we feature Marc Headden, owner of Headden Appraisal Services and a passionate advocate for community and connection. Marc has built trust, relationships and a reputation for integrity through his work, community involvement and numerous charitable contributions. You just might know him if you frequent Halfway Market! He exemplifies the heart of Williamson County, and we are honored to recognize his unwavering commitment to his community in our latest “I Am Williamson” feature. Read his interview here:

How long have you lived in Williamson County? What is it about WC that makes it feel like home to you?

I have been living here for thirty-two years and working here for thirty-four years. I started Headden Appraisal Services in Brentwood in 1991. It really is home to me. I grew up in Marshall County but have always had some family here, as well as several of my doctors and even my orthodontist. I love all the people here and that is what makes it home to me.

What is your profession, and what led you to choose it?

I am a real estate appraiser, working for my own company locally as well as working with USDA Rural Development Special Assets all over the country. My father was a real estate broker and had a company in Brentwood. I did not enjoy the real estate sales side as much, but really enjoyed doing appraisal work. There were a lot of banking regulation changes when I was getting out of college, so my timing was also very good for

What keeps you motivated and inspired?

My family and friends. I have been truly blessed in life. They are always supportive and helpful. I have also had great clients with the many businesses and individuals here in Williamson County.

the appraisal business. The real estate appraisal business has allowed me to meet all types of great people and work in all areas of the county. I have appraised most of downtown Franklin at some point in my thirty-four years. Jody Bowman and Boyce Magli both really helped and encouraged me when I first started. I miss them both.

Three words that best describe you. Humor, kindness and integrity.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

Travel, UT football and basketball games, fishing and spending time with my granddaughter, Lucy Lou.

Where is your favorite place to go in Williamson County?

I enjoy Halfway Market and try to go at least once a week. You get to see and visit everyone there. This includes people you have known forever as well as new people. You can also find out all about politics and the local gossip. The cheeseburgers are the best.

What organizations are you involved with and why are they important to you?

I have been involved with several organizations through the years. I was a long-time member of the Franklin Noon Rotary Club and was made a Paul Harris Fellow. I have been the Chairman of the TN Real Estate Appraiser Commission and also have professional membership and designations with the International Right of Way Association (appraiser group). My wife and I support St Jude Children’s Research Hospital. We also support Monroe Carrell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt, where our preemie granddaughter spent the first three months of her life. They are amazing!

What is the one thing you do not go a day without?

I’ve got two: coffee and prayer. I need the coffee to get me going and the prayer to get me through.

Finish this statement: I Am Williamson because… This county accepted me and has allowed me to make a living and grow exponentially as a person.

Both of my children were born at Williamson Medical Center and were raised here. My son, his wife and their daughter live in Franklin. He and his wife work here. My daughter and her husband live just across the county line but both work in Franklin as well. I am blessed to call Williamson County home.

OLIVIA D e MONTBREUN INTERIORS

OLD SOUL + NEW LIGHT

DESIGN THAT CARRIES THE WEIGHT OF HISTORY & THE CLARITY OF NOW

At Olivia DeMontbreun Interiors, design is viewed as more than simply arranging furniture or selecting decorative accents—it is seen as the art of crafting environments that feel both beautiful and purposeful. Every space begins with architecture as the foundation, with interiors layered in to reflect how people truly live, gather and thrive.

“I design with one thing in mind and that’s my clients. Each person’s home is representative of what they love and who they are, and I intend to always design with that at the forefront. I strive to create a space that reflects what each of my clients love most about coming home."
- Olivia

The team at Olivia DeMontbreun Interiors considers not only a space’s visual appeal, but also how it flows, functions, and adapts to the lives of those who inhabit it. From the movement of natural light through a room to the texture of every finish, each design choice is intentional and deeply connected to the people who will experience the space.

At the core of the firm’s philosophy is a deep appreciation for timeless design. Olivia DeMontbreun Interiors believes that the most meaningful homes are those that strike a balance between old and new—where vintage elements and layers of history are thoughtfully blended with fresh, modern details. This blending of past and present creates interiors that are not only beautiful but also rich with story and soul—spaces that truly feel like home.

The design process is rooted in collaboration and storytelling. It begins by listening—listening to the client’s vision, lifestyle and the narrative they want their home to express. With each project, Olivia DeMontbreun Interiors translates

these elements into spaces that harmonize timeless elegance with modern livability. Whether working on a renovation or new construction, the firm’s designs combine sophistication and warmth, ensuring every home feels both personal and enduring.

Olivia DeMontbreun Interiors is driven by a simple yet powerful goal: to create interiors that elevate the everyday. The team believes thoughtful design should not only inspire but also support the natural rhythms of life, transforming houses into homes that are refined, welcoming and lasting. Each project represents an opportunity to blend architecture, artistry, and authenticity into spaces that will be cherished for years to come. Learn more

Perfection Patio

Q&A WITH CASS SMITH OF CASS MAKES HOME

The patio is honestly my favorite place to hang out! I find myself here at multiple times during the day to just relax and have some quiet time. - CASS SMITH "

elf-taught DIYer, Cass Smith, has been upgrading her Virginia home with her own two hands Through her Cass Makes Home blog and social media channels. She encourages and inspires DIYers and designers alike to do the same.

Cass loves spending time with her husband and two daughters in their beautiful backyard and set out to create the ultimate outdoor oasis by upgrading the existing wood deck with high-performance, low-maintenance Trex® composite decking. She also turned previously unusable space beneath the deck into a fully-furnished patio area by installing Trex® RainEscape®, an under-deck drainage system that protects the decking substructure from moisture and keeps the area beneath an elevated deck dry.

We checked in with Cass following the completion of the project to learn more about her decision to use Trex RainEscape.

Why did you choose Trex RainEscape?

We knew we wanted to give the patio underneath our deck a makeover and decided this would be a great opportunity to take it to the next level. I had never heard of RainEscape…and it’s probably my favorite feature of our new deck. It allows us to have a dry and rain-free patio under our deck by collecting and draining rain into the yard. It’s so cool!

Describe your experience installing Trex RainEscape materials.

Before laying the new Trex deck boards, I installed the RainEscape system to waterproof the area beneath. The process begins with rolling out and stapling the membrane trough material between the joists of the deck. You start with the material taut and then increase the amount of material as you go by following the guideline. This creates an incline for water to flow out. I then applied the butyl tape (provided with the system) to all of the seams to seal it up. The butyl tape also creates a seal when screws penetrate it.

What is the greatest benefit of the Trex RainEscape system?

After installing the RainEscape system, I was able to run electrical for a ceiling fan and then close up the ceiling underneath our deck to make the patio area underneath a comfortable living space. I am so happy with how it all turned out. The patio is honestly my favorite place to hang out! I find myself here at multiple times during the day to just relax and have some quiet time. It’s also perfect for entertaining. I can’t wait to make lots of memories outside together!

Main Barn Restoration

TRIBUTE TO THE PAST & GIFT FOR THE FUTURE

PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY THE CITY OF FRANKLIN

The City of Franklin and Friends of Franklin Parks recently celebrated the completion of the Park at Harlinsdale Farm’s Main Barn renovations. The project has been a part of the ongoing efforts of a passionate community. The City of Franklin purchased Harlinsdale Farm with a vision to create a public park that would preserve its history. The Main Barn on the property, which greets you when you pull into the park driveway, sat in disrepair. But too many voices shared the same sentiment and goal—bring it back to life for the community and for the significance it has to the history of the farm. And, so, they have done just that.

“Fourteen years ago, they hosted the very first Raise the Roofs fundraiser to save the barn. That one evening sparked a tradition that has grown into Friends of Franklin Parks’ annual fundraising event,” says Torrey Barnhill, Executive Director Friends of Franklin Parks. “Through the generosity of our community, Raise the Roofs has funded the restoration of the Main Barn, the creation of a multipurpose equestrian arena that brought horses back to Harlinsdale, the restoration of the Hayes House and soon, the return of the workers’ houses that share the stories of those who lived and worked here.”

The restoration was not only made possible by the Raise the Roofs event, but also key donors and community efforts that played a pivotal role in completing the project. Torrey says that friends of Harlinsdale stepped forward in extraordinary ways and they understood that preserving this barn was not just about saving a building, but about ensuring a legacy for future generations. “As part of the project, donors were invited to sponsor specific horse stalls, each tied to a notable horse that lived here. Many families chose stalls with personal connections, creating a living bond between the farm’s history and today’s community.”

The barn, which was originally built in the mid-1800s, now includes several renovations and additions. Suzanne Carter, City of Franklin Parks and Recreation Superintendent, says that the restoration process took some time, but they were able to maintain the original look of the structure. “The biggest challenge was adding utilities to the structure but, luckily, we were able to complete that task with little disruption to the unique look of the historic barn,” explains Suzanne. “The exterior siding and the interior horse stalls were all preserved during the project and remain today in their original state. The windows and doors were also maintained and restored. The overall floorplan of the Main Barn remains the same and the feel when you walk into the barn resembles a working barn but now allows the City of Franklin Parks and Recreation Department to welcome visitors each day in a comfortable manner.”

Walking through the barn now, knowing that every stall, artifact and photograph carries forward the legacy of Harlinsdale, is incredibly moving.

The goal of the Main Barn restoration is both a tribute to the past and a gift for the future. “It celebrates the farm’s significance in the Tennessee Walking Horse industry, housing trophies, memorabilia and artifacts from those who built Harlinsdale’s legacy. Walking through its doors allows visitors to step back in time and connect with Franklin’s history in a tangible way,” says Torrey. “At the same time, it is designed to be a vibrant community gathering place. The barn will be available through the City of Franklin as an event venue, offering a unique space for celebrations, community events and tourism. Friends of Franklin Parks has also collected original office desks, photographs and documents so that every visitor experiences the stories that make this farm so meaningful.”

Suzanne adds that the Main Barn will provide opportunities for city meetings as well as offer educational opportunities. “We also plan to

have several city sponsored events hosted in the Main Barn, including the Candy Cane Hunt that was formerly hosted at our Eastern Flank Event Facility. We foresee the Main Barn being a great opportunity to host a variety of events in the coming years,” says Suzanne.

Torrey feels that the restoration is so much more than saving a structure—it’s about preserving a story, a heritage, and a community treasure. “Walking through the barn now, knowing that every stall, artifact and photograph carries forward the legacy of Harlinsdale, is incredibly moving. To the Friends of Franklin Parks team, this project is a testament to what can happen when a community comes together with vision and heart. It represents not just Franklin’s history, but its future— one where we honor the past while creating spaces that bring people together. The Park at Harlinsdale is a public park and for everyone to enjoy,” says Torrey. “On a personal level, it’s deeply rewarding to know that generations to come will experience Harlinsdale not as just barns, but as a living, breathing part of Franklin’s story. That’s the true power of parks—they connect us to history, to nature and to each other.”

A BEGINNER’S GUIDE

n recent years, pickleball has transformed from a niche sport into a nationwide phenomenon. This engaging blend of tennis, badminton and ping-pong has captured the hearts of players across various demographics, from retirees seeking low-impact exercise to younger enthusiasts eager for a fresh challenge. As courts pop up in backyards, community centers and parks, it’s clear that pickleball is more than just a passing trend–it’s a social revolution.

Originating in the mid-1960s on Bainbridge Island, Washington, pickleball was initially created as a family activity. The game’s rapid ascent to popularity can be attributed to its accessibility and the joy it brings to players of all skill levels. The smaller court size, combined with slower-moving balls and a unique scoring system, allows participants to enjoy extended rallies and close matches, making it ideal for casual play and competitive tournaments alike.

Understanding the rules of pickleball is key to fully appreciating the game. Played on a rectangular court similar to a badminton court, the objective is to score points by hitting the ball over a net and into the opponent’s court. Each match can be played in singles or doubles format, with doubles being particularly popular for its social aspect. Here are the essential rules every newcomer should know.

The Essentials

SCORING

Pickleball uses a rally scoring system, where points can be won by either side regardless of who served. Games are typically played to eleven points, and a team must win by at least two points.

SERVING

The game begins with an underhand serve, which must land in the diagonally opposite service box. Players must keep both feet behind the baseline when serving.

FAULTS

Points are lost if a player fails to serve correctly, hits the ball out of bounds, or violates the kitchen rule.

THE KITCHEN

This critical area, also known as the non-volley zone, extends seven feet from the net on both sides. Players cannot hit the ball while standing in this zone unless the ball has bounced first. This rule prevents aggressive net play and encourages strategic shot placement.

ROTATING SERVERS

In doubles, teams alternate serves. After winning a point, the server continues to serve until their team commits a fault, at which point the serve passes to the opposing team.

As the pickleball community continues to expand, so does its impact on fitness and social connection. With local clubs forming and tournaments gaining traction, pickleball is not just a game; it’s a lifestyle. Whether you’re a seasoned athlete or a curious newcomer, there’s never been a better time to pick up a paddle and join the fun!

If you are wanting to start your pickleball journey, there are courts all over Williamson County. Some locations include The Academy Park Gym, Academy Park Outdoor Court, Fairview Recreation Complex, Franklin Recreation Complex, Longview Recreation Complex and Nolensville Recreation Complex.

The Dunlin

A QUINTESSENTIAL SOUTHERN RETREAT

The Dunlin, a member of the Auberge Resorts Collection, is a new coastal escape on Kiawah River in South Carolina. Named after a beautiful local shorebird, this charming getaway is the first of its kind in the area—a stylish luxury retreat that feels like an eternal Southern summer home, embodying whimsical charm and unparalleled nature experiences. Located along the Charleston coastline within an exclusive 2,000 acre waterfront community, the property’s Amanda Lindroth-designed interiors invite guests to experience the bliss of coastal living in Charleston’s Sea Islands. With twenty miles of waterfront, scenic nature trails and abundant marshlands rich in native flora and fauna, The Dunlin celebrates the rich heritage of South Carolina alongside the simple wonder of life on the river.

Effortlessly draped in the essence of this serene natural landscape, each of the resort’s seventy-two cottage-style guest rooms and suites are delightfully appointed. The cottage-inspired, Lowcountry aesthetic features wicker, wood and textured linen combined with white-washed tones, mint-green accents and honey oak floors. Outside, the porches in each room are the perfect place for morning coffee, paging through a good book, or a nightcap with spectacular riverfront views. Almost double the size of the generously-proportioned guest rooms, suites feature large living rooms, dining nooks, and in-room soaking tubs with river views. The signature Sweetbay Suite with its wraparound porch, indoor fireplace, and outdoor tub for bathing in nature is the standout among the property’s accommodations. An ideal destination for families or friends traveling together, the resort offers a variety of rooms and suites that can be seamlessly configured to accommodate couples, families or groups of any type.

More than a personal getaway, The Dunlin features thoughtfully designed wedding and events spaces, making it an ideal destination for both business and leisure that celebrates both the rich heritage of South Carolina and the simple wonder of life on the river.

A Celebration Of Coastal Southern Cuisine

Helmed by Executive Chef Michael DeCicco, The Dunlin celebrates soulful Southern cooking across its dining venues and through unique culinary experiences—from oyster roasts and whole hog BBQs to Lowcountry boils and riverside picnics.  The resort’s culinary journey is intended to be destination-defining, bringing elevated cocktail and dining experiences to the region with local and seasonal ingredients at the forefront.

Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, Linnette’s is the hotel’s signature restaurant, paying

homage to the heritage of Johns Island with familiar and comforting coastal cuisine prepared with wit and sophistication. The open kitchen serves up woodfired dishes from a seafoodforward menu, with ingredients sourced from local fishermen.

Nestled just beneath Linnette's, is the Willet Room, the riverside lounge bar serving up the perfect iced tea, all-day bites, cocktails and rare whiskeys with a side of southern hospitality. The perfect perch for a morning coffee and pastry, a post-adventure refreshment and pre-dinner

drink or nightcap, the space is the ideal hangout from sun-up to sun-down. And not to be overlooked, The Cove is a sundrenched setting amongst swaying palms and rustling marsh grasses that offers poolside dining year-round. The charming,1950sinspired, bygone-beach-club evokes the perfect atmosphere for enjoying lunch classics and refreshing cocktails lounging in private cabanas. Sunbathers should be on the lookout for surprise and delightful deliveries of spirited popsicles, a roving snow cone cart or a visit from a poolside oyster shucker.

A Destination for Riverside Relaxation

A sanctuary dedicated to self-nurturing and wellness, Aster, an Auberge Spa, is the resort’s house of beauty and rejuvenation. Inspired by the natural healing potential of honey—particularly Aster honey sourced from local apiaries—the spa menu includes advanced French beauty rituals by Biologique Recherche as well as botanical treatments inspired by Farmaesthetics Fine Herbal Skincare.  Hive-to-table experiences include a Healing Honey Body treatment which features locally harvested Midnight Honey Oil, while garden-inspired treatments such as the Milk & Buds Facial incorporate local flowers and essences designed to reconnect guests to the natural world. Poetry in the Garden, Breathing for Beauty,

Cooking with Flowers and The Romance of Teas and Tinctures are just a few of the wellness workshops offered. Bringing wellness beyond the walls of the spa, poolside treatments available to guests include an Aster Foot Rub, Radiant River waterless facial and more. And for those desiring to optimize wellbeing, daily fitness classes and a program of visiting specialists are offered.

A Natural Playground for Adventure & Leisure Pursuits

The Dunlin connects like-minded individuals of all ages through the joys of river life and unrivaled experiences on the water. Guests can embark into the Saltmarsh to get up close with wildlife in an exhilarating coastal safari that explores Kiawah River’s protected estuary thronging with roseate spoonbills, great blue herons, sea turtles and dolphins. In this natural paradise, boaters, kayakers and paddleboarders can connect with tidal patterns and explore the mirror-like waters at different times of the day with a one of a kind “Going for Grits” morning kayak ride to a Southern breakfast picnic or “Moonrise Paddle” full moon guided-kayaking adventures. A popular Lowcountry pastime is taught in The Dunlin’s “Gone Fishin’” workshop, allowing guests to learn a variety of fishing technique like net casting, crabbing and bait lining with a local expert.

On land, more than twenty miles of nature trails invite biking and hiking through moss-covered oaks and pines

via creeks, ponds and masses of golden marsh grasses along the water’s edge. Learn new techniques or gain hands-on experience with natural ingredients through our oyster harvesting workshops, cheese-making excursions to the local Goatery, and experiences on the heirloom cattle ranch. For family adventures, younger guests can enjoy “Minnows Camp” and toy boat races as well as a visit to a neighboring farm where guests of all ages can collect eggs, feed chickens, milk cows, and interact with friendly farm animals. Primed to be the village hang out, the resort will bring families and neighbors together over bonfires, communal seafood feasts, whole hog BBQs, and an annual Summer kids club to form lifelong memories. THE 4 TH ANNUAL HOG BALL

SEQUINS, OVERALLS Fried Bologna and

It’s not every day you see a man in a tuxedo jacket and denim overalls, holding a cocktail in one hand and a slice of fried bologna in the other —but that’s just the norm if you’re at the Hog Ball: A Local’s Affair. Now in its fourth year, Williamson County’s most delightfully fun-filled and impactful fundraiser is bringing the sparkle and sass back to town.

The Hog Ball is the creation of a tight-knit group of friends including Allison and Jason Brown, Adam and Ginger Caldwell, Courtney and Matt Daniel, Ondrea and Glenn Johnson, Kristin Carbray Martin, Zane Martin, and Ashley W. Roberts. “We were having brunch at The Bunganut Pig one morning after a fundraiser and laughing about how we paid to eat dinner together at the previous evening’s event—and then having brunch together with the same people without a ticket. One

thing led to another and a ‘party with a purpose’ was born,” explains Hog Ball co-founder Ondrea Johnson. “Since we were eating at The Pig, it was our inspiration for Hog Ball.”

Ondrea says that the charities chosen to benefit from the Hog Ball are mostly hyper-local and do not hold their own fundraising events. “We celebrate the spirit of old Franklin while raising real dollars for local, high-impact nonprofits. Each year our volunteer committee nominates and vets Williamson County organizations that make a direct difference,” says Hog Ball co-founder Courtney Daniel. “We aim for a balanced slate across needs (families, education, food security, animal rescue, etc.). On event night, every ticket equals a vote at check-in: the top votegetter receives the majority of proceeds, and the remaining finalists each receive a $1,000 grant. It’s joyful, transparent and community driven.”

“We celebrate the spirit of old Franklin while raising real dollars for local, high-impact nonprofits.”
– COURTNEY DANIEL

After the first year, the popular event immediately outgrew its original location of The Bunganut Pig and moved to the Eastern Flank Battlefield Park, where it will take place this year as well. The popularity of the event is also driven by the fashion. “The first year, we thought it would be fun to do black-tie at The Pig, but attendees all had their own take on black-tie,” says Ondrea. “For example, one guest came in overalls, a bow tie and tux jacket. That was really the inspiration for some more outlandish fashion choices in year two including UT overalls, sequined cowboy hats, and more. From there, we’ve really tried to have fun with the theme and encourage everyone to do their own thing.”

“I feel the overall vibe around fashion embodies being lighthearted and self-expressive,” says Hog Ball cofounder Ginger Caldwell. “Do what feels best for you!

If you love high style, then pour it on. But if you are a more jeans, boots and cowboy hat kind of person, then that works too!”

At Hog Ball, the motto is pretty much: Come as your EXTRA self. This year’s theme is “Hog-Tied in 2025” and—honestly—no one really knows what that means yet, which is half the fun. A Western twist? A nod to fashionably restrained chaos? Either way, expect creative interpretations. Think feather boas, bolo ties, fringe everything, and probably a whole lot of rope-inspired accessories.

This year, they have also partnered with the Downtown Franklin Rotary Club so that all tickets and sponsorships can be tax deductible. The event will start with the signature fried bologna, then go into a

casual, southern dinner (with plastic utensils), and end with dancing the night away.

The organizers say they have no intention of turning Hog Ball into some massive black-tie beast. “We love the scale we’re at. The magic is the porch-party feel where you know folks on the dance floor,” says Courtney. “In the next few years, we’ll keep headcount steady, elevate the experience, and grow impact through sponsorships and matching gifts rather than more bodies.”

“Personally, I’m just excited to see the event thriving,” says Ondrea. “I think it’s something Franklin craves. It’s a taste of how things used to be in Franklin. Everyone is welcome, but

we’ve tried to keep that old Franklin feel so even people new to Franklin get to experience a taste of what made Franklin the place everyone loves to be.”

The Hog Ball isn’t just a fundraiser. It’s a fashion fever dream, a community throwback, and one heck of a good time. So, if you’ve ever wanted to go out in cowboy boots and a ballgown or rock a vintage blazer with shorts and suspenders—all for a great cause—this is your night. Dig out those sequins, dust off those boots, and mark your calendar. The Hog Ball takes place on October 4th and tickets sell-out fast.

AT THE GALLERY

TIFFANY FOSS

Tiffany Foss is a representational, impressionist painter from Franklin, currently showing at Gallery 202. Working primarily in plein air, she finds inspiration in fleeting light and color. "Landscapes and being in the landscape cause me to take a deep breath, explore the depths and complexity of our surroundings and enjoy how every day is different with the weather, light and season," explains Tiffany.

"I take such joy marveling in God's character through His beautiful and diverse creation. I love trying to capture the varied colors and light that we see. I am drawn to any landscape and love to see a distinct character of light or depth, where the color changes in the distance. I have a background in architecture, so I also have a special fondness for the fun character of buildings and capturing our built landscape and community."

Tiffany has studied under nationally recognized artists such as Dawn Whitelaw, Lori Putnam, and Matt Smith, among others, and enjoys teaching through workshops, demonstrations, and private instruction. "I love painting with oils because of their flexibility—how they can be layered and blended to create subtle nuances," she says. "I'm open to play, too! Gouache, acrylics, and watercolors all look fun and may be something I explore in the future."

As an active member of The Chestnut Group,

I take such joy marveling in God's character through His beautiful and diverse creation. "

Tiffany serves as chair of its marketing and media committee and as a board member. She is also a juried member of the American Impressionist Society, Oil Painters of America and Women Painters of the Southeast. Her work has been juried into regional and national shows, including the Cumberland Society's National Exhibition, and she has received recognition from institutions such as Gallery 202, the Gadsden Museum of Art, and the Tennessee Art League.

Through her work, Tiffany hopes to create a sense of peace, curiosity, or joy, offering viewers a moment of connection that words can't capture.

When asked what art means to her, Tiffany explains: "Art, to me, is a way to invite the viewer to slow down, observe and share joy in the presence of our beautiful surroundings with the objective of attempting to reflect the character of God."

See Tiffany's work at Gallery 202, in downtown Franklin, or online at gallery202art.com.
