Ballet in Rosemary

Visitors to the Rosemary District enjoyed a special show on Dec. 11 when Sarasota Ballet School dancers performed the Nutcracker Festival. The event, held outside the Overton, had dozens of students from the Sarasota Ballet School’s Margaret Barbieri Conservatory and Dance: The Next Generation programs assembling to put on a series of dances and productions on a stage from 9 a.m. through the afternoon. Dancers as young as 3 pitched in and put on pieces including “The Nutcracker” for an assembled audience every 20 minutes. Crowds came and went and picked up Sarasota Ballet merchandise and other gifts from local vendors.

The Aloha Kai on Midnight Pass Road has a fun sight for arriving guests and tenants. A bright red inflatable Santa rocks back and forth welcoming

people to the establishment while a trail of lights branch to the main building and frame it in bright and colorful colors. It’s just one of the creative displays found around the city.

Packs for veterans

The Daughters of the American Revolution went out of their way for a good cause when members of the Sara De Soto Chapter donated backpacks and supplies to Goodwill Manasota Veterans Services Program office on Dec. 13. Blankets, clothing, backpacks and more were provided to homeless veterans as part of the Sue’s Backpacks program, which has been led by member Rebecca Morgan since 2017. Morgan started the program helping others in honor of her late mother, Sue Harris, who led a similar initiative in her DAR chapter in another state. Veterans Services Program Manager Todd Hughes (above with Morgan), team member Randy Wright and volunteers were on hand to receive the backpacks from Morgan and fellow member Jeanne McMillan.
