Fair play

Every January, the Manatee County Fair is ripe with fun, food and some hefty competition. The fair runs Jan. 15-25, but Kinley Albritton (pictured above), a Nolan Middle School student, already has won the title of 2026 Little Miss Manatee Fair Queen on Nov. 15 at the fair’s annual pageant. Over 200 plants and nearly 800 livestock animals will vie for ribbons and titles. First responders and commissioners enjoy the competition, too. “The (competition) that everybody likes is the donut eating contest between the Manatee County Sheriff’s Department and the firefighters (Jan. 24 at 5 p.m.),” said Fair Manager Danny Alfonso. “Sheriff Rick Wells cheers them on with almost a whip. He’s very competitive.”

Olympics at Tara

For Tara Elementary School second grade students Natalie Giammatteo and Rocco Giammaria (pictured above) preparing for the school olympics provides a sense of fun but also terror (the good kind). Giammaria said the terror comes from the speed while being pushed on a scooter (or bobsled). “It is always more fun working with two people,” Giammaria said. “The teamwork was challenging, trying to steer the bobsled, but it was fun!” The olympics is a collaboration between departments. Every class will choose to learn about and represent a country. It will take place Feb. 5. “We conclude our Olympic unit with a Parade of Nations and an Olympic Field Day,” said P.E. teacher Linda Haluska.
