Time to light up Siesta Key Everyone enjoys the holiday season for its spirit of camaraderie and love and the promise of a new year to come.

There’s also the dazzle of lights that adorn houses and neighborhoods, and that can bring a level of friendly competition to the community.

The Siesta Key Condominium Council is welcoming such competition and has opened registration for its 2021 Holiday Lighting Contest. Any condoowning member can now register for the contest, which is split into three categories for condo complexes with 50 or fewer units, 51 to 100, and 101 and more.

The registration deadline for the lights show is Dec. 1.

Judging will take place on the evening of Dec. 8.

Happy 65th birthday Temple Emanu-El is typically busy with events and happenings with its community, but the organization took some time on Sunday to celebrate a different occurrence.

Temple Emanu-El staff, members and supporters met early on Nov. 7 for a birthday party celebrating the temple’s 65th anniversary operating in the Sarasota community.

The event — chaired by temple members Bob and Susan Meisel — had Rabbi Brenner Glickman and other temple staff meeting more than 160 guests outside beneath a tent for mingling and food. Lunch and cupcakes were served as families played games outside and in the shade.

Veterans Day parade on Main Street today

“There’s no point of reinventing whatever wheel the city has invented.”

The city of Sarasota along with the Sarasota Patriotic Observance Committee presents the Veterans Day Parade on Main Street on Thursday morning.

Festivities begin at 10 a.m. with the parade featuring color guards, military vehicles, first responders from the Sarasota area, schools and veterans organizations.

The theme is “All Gave Some …

Some Gave All.” The ceremony will feature guest speaker Army Chief Warrant Officer Wes Rinehart, a 2003 Sarasota Military Academy graduate who served several tours in Afghanistan.

The parade steps off from Osprey Avenue and heads west to Gulfstream Avenue.

A ceremony takes place at 11 a.m. at Chaplain J.D. Hamel Park at the corner of Gulfstream Avenue and Main Street.

Crystal Classic returns to Siesta Key Beach B rian Wigglesworth is typically overseeing the many moving pieces that go into a successful Siesta Key Crystal Classic.

It’s an annual tradition in Siesta Key that draws thousands of visitors to admire the intricate creations created by master sand sculptors.

This year, Wigglesworth has a different title: competitor.

The founder of the event has stepped away from managerial responsibilities for the first time since founding the competition in 2010.

Judging and subsequent awards take place at noon Sunday. “(Sculptors) are really eager to get back to work,” Wigglesworth said. “They didn’t have a lot of anything going on for a year and a half.”

“It’s quite a task juggling all the artists, (but) we have a great group of people out here,” said Andy Daily, who has taken over

The competition typically has many contestants hailing from Europe, but COVID-19 made it harder to bring in international figures. As such, Wigglesworth was asked to be a competitor to help bolster the lineup. He partnered with New York artist Matt Long to participate in the duos category.

Wigglesworth jokes that he isn’t as sad about the transition as he expected.

“I did it for 10 years, and it was time to pass it on,” he said.

Three educators last week were named finalists for the Sarasota County Schools’ Teacher of the Year award.

On Nov. 4, the teachers, one each from the elementary, middle and high school levels, were surprised by presentations, assembled in tandem between the school district and the Education Foundation of Sarasota County, which sponsors the annual awards.

Shannon Haddad, of Ashton Elementary; Jennifer Jaso, of Sarasota Middle; and Loridia Urquiza, of Booker High, will now compete for the title of the district’s teacher of the year. Countywide teachers of the year are eligible for consideration in the statewide contest.

Teacher of the Year will be announced Dec. 9 at a ceremony honoring 43 finalists from each of the district’s schools at Michael’s On East.

Last year’s Sarasota District Teacher of the Year, Fruitville Elementary School’s Kari Johnson, was named one of four runners-up for the Florida Teacher of the Year awards in July.

On Monday, the Charter Review Committee heard from a lineup of speakers with firsthand experience in various forms of local government.

As the advisory board attempts to sort through the pros and cons of different power structures — and, ultimately, elected officials do the same — here’s the guidance those speakers shared:

Arroyo, who joined the board in 2020, pledged the city would create a culture of civility, recognize tradition and embrace change while he fills the ceremonial role.

“Me standing before you today as the youngest elected official in the history of Sarasota is a testament to how inclusive and forwardthinking our city is,” Arroyo said.

The commission unanimously selected Kyle Battie, also elected in 2020, to serve as vice mayor. During Friday’s meeting, Arroyo presented a key to the city to outgoing Mayor Hagen Brody.

he Charter Review Committee endorsed a major change to city government Tuesday, recommending the creation of an elected mayor position with executive power distinct from the legislative City Commission.

The advisory board did not come to a decision regarding many of its preferences for a restructured government, vowing to revisit the topic at its next meeting later this month.

Already, the group has taken the first step toward a referendum on the question of amending the city charter to establish a “strong mayor.”

The Charter Review Committee, composed of 10 members whom the City Commission appointed, voted 6-3 in favor of an elected mayor.

Although some committee members expressed a preference for maintaining the council-manager form of government, a majority said they believed a singular, elected leader with more centralized power would prove beneficial for the city.

“I do feel as if we are in a little bit of a crisis when it comes to leadership,” committee member Philip DiMaria said.

QUESTIONS REMAIN

Even some Charter Review Committee members who favored an elected mayor said it was unclear whether Sarasota voters felt the same way.

The committee held off on discussing the details of an elected mayor until later this month, holding off for the return of some seasonal residents in hopes of gathering more public input. But Tuesday’s meeting was sparsely attended, with just five residents speaking for or against an overhaul to city government.

“We are really struggling with this as if it’s a life-or-death situation when it’s not even as important as tennis courts, based on the audience,” committee member Peter Fanning said.

Between 1996 and 2009, city voters rejected three separate referendums seeking to create an elected mayor position with varying levels of power. Committee members who favored the current council-manager system cited that past opposition and said they did not believe there was a compelling reason to significantly adjust the city’s current system of governance.

committee member Cathy Antunes said. “I don’t see the people clamoring for change.”

Opponents of an elected mayor — particularly one that wielded significant power — also raised concerns about what would happen if a mayor did not conduct themself properly in the leadership position. Committee member Eileen Normile expressed skepticism about the city’s ability to attract qualified candidates in a mayoral race and about the ability of the electoral process to filter out substandard candidates without any conditions on who could run.

“Vision doesn’t do it for me,” Normile said. “Division of power, to me, is a safeguard I wouldn’t want to give up.”

Some elected mayor supporters took issue with that line of thinking, arguing that minimizing the risk associated with a potential bad actor should not be a leading consideration in structuring city government.

“I don’t think working from fear is the right approach,” committee member Kim Githler said.

in which five commissioners wielded equal power. Committee members suggested an elected mayor would be able to take action more swiftly and serve as the unquestioned point person for major issues facing the city. Committee member Dan Clermont said he envisioned an elected mayor as someone who would lay out a singular vision for the future of Sarasota.

“Without vision, you do tend to just be stewards of the city,” Clermont said. “You don’t provide leadership.”

The committee sorted out a few details about its vision for an elected mayor at Tuesday’s meeting. It recommended a mayor who does not have a voting position on the City Commission, which would continue to serve as a legislative body. It said the mayor should not have veto power over the commission.

The committee also turned away some efforts to limit the power of an elected mayor, voting against proposals to make the mayor a two-year term and to retain the City Commission’s authority to appoint a city manager.

Still, the full scope of a potential elected mayor position and associated changes with other leadership positions in city government remain unsettled. The committee intends to finish its work beginning at its next meeting later this month. What would the term of an elected mayor be? What positions would that person oversee? Will there continue to be a professional administrator in the city, and if so, what title would be associated with that role?

Regardless of what the committee cobbles together, its work will ultimately serve as a recommendation to the City Commission. The commission is scheduled to hear a presentation from the committee in March, at which point the city’s elected leaders will have the authority to decide whether to place charter amendments on the ballot for voters to consider.

You might have noticed something a little different with your paper this week. Maybe you couldn’t quite put your finger on it (figuratively, of course), but the careful observer (pun intended) would notice that the paper this week is a bit larger than ever before. It’s a half-inch wider and 3-and-a-half inches taller, to be exact. In newspaper parlance, it’s what we call a broadsheet, though it’s not nearly as broad as the mapsized newspapers of yore.

But whether you noticed our new size or not, the question you are probably asking is: Why? And maybe: So what? Who cares?

Both are excellent questions, particularly given that everything in our industry is tending to get smaller these days. A few years ago, it seemed like the attack of the incredible shrinking newspaper. Tabloids were in! Broadsheets were out! Look how innovative we’re being!

The truth is, we always had a little size envy. Although the Observer has always been a nice, convenient friendly size, it has meant that a lot of content ends up on the cutting room floor each week. Pictures are cropped, text is trimmed. At times, it can be limiting.

So when we were reevaluating our printer options as a normal course of business and learned that The Villages Media Group just installed a brand-new, state-of-the-art Koenig & Bauer press — the only new press installed in the U.S. in the past decade — it had our interest. Then we learned it can print broadsheet more efficiently than our current size, so we decided to, as our president and

publisher, Emily Walsh, said: “Go big or go home.”

At a time when the industry is in contraction mode — whether it’s the size of newspapers, the number of days a week printed or just the size of newspapers’ newsrooms — we felt it was a no-brainer to make this investment. Because we are not interested in just preserving. We want to grow.

And we are definitely not going anywhere, instead committed to serving our local readers and advertisers with the best products possible, both in print and digitally.

Looking at the impact a bigger page has on content, we’re excited about the possibilities. It doesn’t sound like much, but in those 54 extra square inches, we can fit in an additional info box, short story, several photos or even that white space designers talk so much about.

All that means better, more beautiful presentations for features, more room for photos and more stories and news for you, our readers.

So to wrap up a long explanation succinctly (though I do have the space to go on, as you now know), the real reason we did this is the reason behind everything we do: you!

We truly believe the shift will help us serve you better with the news, advertising, information and entertainment you have come to expect and enjoy from the Observer.

arasota-Bradenton International Airport leaders have a vision for commercial development on airport-owned land along University Parkway, but a surge in air traffic might complicate that goal for the near future.

On Monday, representatives for the Sarasota Manatee Airport

Authority held a community workshop through the city to outline a series of development applications that the group has filed. Through the applications, the airport seeks to rescind the development order currently governing 100 acres of the property, replace it with a new one and obtain a series of land-use approvals to facilitate new commercial and parking facilities.

ond time the airport has discussed its plans for redevelopment in a public forum. In July, airport officials met with the city’s Development Review Committee to discuss plans that were largely focused on commercial construction and a new centralized rental car facility for the airport.

Since that initial meeting with city staff, an increase in passengers at SRQ has forced airport officials to reconsider the timing and the scope of their commercial development plans. Attorney Dan Bailey, who is representing the airport, said the level of activity has increased significantly after the lowest points of the pandemic, which has created new facility-related challenges.

“Now we have more traffic than we can keep up with,” Bailey said.

Bailey said the airport originally intended to develop the entirety of its frontage along University Parkway as commercial, creating a new source of revenue for an organization with no taxing authority. But more recently, in response to rising passenger volumes, the airport has designated two areas to be turned into surface parking lots — for the short term, at least.

North of University Parkway and east of Old Bradenton Road, the airport intends to establish a remote parking lot with 450 spaces. At 1150 Rental Car Road, the airport plans to build a cellphone parking lot.

“Our long-term plan would be commercial for most of those parcels, but short term, we’re first and foremost an airport, so we need to meet passenger needs,” Bailey said.

Beyond the expanded parking capacity, however, the airport remains focused on commercial growth. The applications filed with the city include a request to rezone 24.5 acres along University Parkway as SRQ Gateway Centre. The complex is slated to include 21,000 square feet of restaurant space, 20,000 square feet of offices, a 6,000-square-foot gas station and convenience store, a 5,000 -square-foot retail store and a 130-room hotel.

To make room for the commercial development, the airport intends to eliminate existing rental car space along University and centralize those operations in a single facility at 1151 Rental Car Road.

Airport President and CEO Rick Piccolo was not available for comment. In a previous interview with the Sarasota Observer, Piccolo said the commercial growth was designed to better serve passengers flying through Sarasota, calling a restaurant and convenience store complementary uses to the airport facility. If the city approves the proposals, airport officials said they would take a flexible approach to the eventual commercial build-out of the affected land.

“We can move at a fast pace or a slow pace depending on what demand is out there,” Piccolo said.

Laurel Park residents target short-term rental

n mid-October, Alice Sundstrom reached out to Sarasota officials with a message of distress: A hotel had set up shop in her neighborhood, in violation of city regulations.

Sundstrom is the president of the Laurel Park Neighborhood Association, and she was calling attention to activity at the El Tropicale condominiums at 1910 Morrill St. Property owners had converted the 11-unit complex from residential use into short-term rentals for vacationers earlier this year, Sundstrom said.

When Laurel Park neighborhood representatives looked up online listings for the property, they found units were being rented for stays as short as one night.

Despite efforts from the city to bring the property into compliance, Sundstrom said, issues continued to persist, and residents began to question why the city wasn’t more responsive to the issues they raised.

“El Tropicale has been allowed to operate and have a negative impact on our residential neighborhood for more than six months with no repercussions,” Sundstrom wrote.

Less than three weeks later, Laurel Park residents got a resolution they celebrated.

The city cited the El Tropicale property owners for two code violations, and on Nov. 4, both parties appeared before a special magistrate for a hearing on the topic. During that hearing, representatives for the property owner acknowledged that illegal short-term rental activity had

taken place this year, but they maintained they had been enforcing the required seven-day minimum stay since June despite online advertisements listing shorter stays Attorney Morgan Bentley, who represented property owner Belvedre RE Investments LLC, said the more recent problematic listings were all on third-party sites.

“None of these are ours,” Bentley said of a series of advertisements that came up in a Google search.

The city levied no fine against the property owner for any violations, but code compliance staff will monitor the property and associated listings for the next two months to ensure no further issues arise. The city intends to revisit the case in January.

In a email newsletter to neighborhood association members on Nov. 5, the Laurel Park Neighborhood Association credited the vigilance of residents for influencing the outcome of the hearing.

“The magistrate was impressed by the approximate 90 signatures on the petition, which reinforced that it was a significant neighborhood issue,” the newsletter stated.

City code compliance staff affirmed that resident input is crucial for addressing issues with illegal short-term rentals in neighborhoods.

Diane Kennedy, the city’s code compliance manager, said the department doesn’t have the resources necessary to proactively identify rentals that violate applicable regulations.

As a result, the city takes a complaint-driven approach, responding when citizens inform staff of potential problem properties.

“We simply don’t have enough

time to sit and web crawl,” Kennedy said.

That could be changing soon. As part of the adoption of new regulations on “hotel houses” on the barrier islands, the city is teaming up with Denver-based company Granicus to monitor for potential noncompliance with short-term rental properties. Kennedy said the partnership will involve tracking potential violations citywide, not just on the barrier islands — which means a more proactive approach than what’s currently in place.

Kennedy acknowledged that tracking and addressing short-term rental violations is a challenge for code compliance staff, but between citizen partnerships and forthcoming third-party help, the department is focused on responding to any problems.

“We’re trying to keep it under control as best we can,” Kennedy said.

Do not vax your children That was the most emphatic warning leading doctors gave at the Florida Summit on COVID.

t’s a good bet that most of you reading this were not among the 800 people who attended or watched the all-day Florida Summit on COVID-19 on Nov. 6 at, of all places, the World Equestrian Center in Ocala. You’d rather get a swab stuck up your nose.

But if you did attend or watch, you could not have left that sevenhour summit without being convinced and persuaded.

Convinced that if you have children or grandchildren, you will not let them be vaccinated for COVID-19.

Likewise, you would have been convinced that conquering COVID-19 — not eradicating it — will not come from Washington or Big Pharma. It will come from the grassroots doctors, researchers and experts who are on the front lines of this epic battle, the physicians seeing and treating patients every day.

And if you listened that whole day to the extraordinary doctors who spoke at the summit, you couldn’t help but be persuaded — persuaded to help these front-line COVID-19 warriors in their efforts to let the world know there are other effective ways to treat COVID-19 than only with vaccines.

You would have been convinced that doctors should have the freedom to practice medicine as they see fit for each patient and that these doctors should not be defrocked, fired, ruined and forced to accept a “one size fits all” orthodoxy out of Washington that, in truth, has caused the deaths of thousands and thousands of people in this country unnecessarily, as well as around the world.

There was so much powerful, convincing, persuasive, invaluable information shared at the summit that Americans have not heard — and that they should hear and know.

Unfortunately, it’s impossible to cram all of it into this space. So we are sharing with you this week the verbatim comments of two accomplished physician/researchers on what was one of the most forceful messages at the summit: whether to vaccinate children.

This issue is on the verge of exploding into the next major battle in America’s cultural civil war.

Indeed, when you deal with children’s health, there will be more than enraged momma bears baring their teeth.

Leading the discussion Saturday on child vaccinations were Drs. Paul Alexander and Peter McCullough.

They were two of four speakers who explicitly and unabashedly said: “Do not vaccinate children.”

Alexander and McCullough have been scorned for speaking out against the Washington medical and scientific establishment and accused of spreading misinformation about the vaccines. Baylor University fired McCullough last February, and Alexander earned scorn from Politico for his recommendations during his time as a COVID-19 adviser in the Trump administration.

Even so, McCullough is recognized in medical circles as a leading U.S. cardiologist and epidemiologist. Alexander holds a master’s degree in epidemiology from the University of Toronto, a master’s in evidence-based medicine at Oxford and a doctorate in evidence-based medicine and research methods from McMaster University in Canada and has worked as an

epidemiologist for the World Health Organization.

Mind you, the following comments are their side of the story.

They are in complete contradiction to what the CDC is saying about the safety of vaccines for children.

But these two accomplished doctors should make you think: Why would they stand in front of 800 people and unabashedly say to not vaccinate children? Here’s why: As Dr. John Littell of Ocala and one of the organizers of the summit told us: “because no one knows the long-term effects these vaccines will have on children.”

What’s more, these are doctors and researchers who have handson evidence that early-treatment regimens are effectively preventing hospitalizations and saving lives.

Read what they say. Do more research. Had you attended the summit, you couldn’t help but be convinced and persuaded.

Dr. Paul Alexander

Epidemiologist, researcher “Not now, not in the future, no vaccines. Under no condition must we allow this.” “(I’m going to) touch on research

by Ankit Patel that looked at the nasal passages of children, showing children’s nostrils have limited expression of the (cell surface enzyme angiotensinconverting enzyme 2), and that helps explain why partly children have such a low risk of being infected initially and passing on this infection and becoming severely ill.

“Dr. (Robert) Malone hit it out of the park by stating clearly that under no condition must a child be vaccinated with these vaccines.

Because children bring near statistical zero risk to the table.

“These vaccines offer only an opportunity for harm and no real opportunity for benefit.

“We looked at all of the data.

We’ve been going at this now … for about 15 months solid.

“We’ve looked at all the data on issues around lockdowns, school closures, mask mandates.

“We could find no evidence, none, not one location in this entire world, not one second, I can say and I have published, where lockdowns worked to curb the spread or death, where school closures worked, to where mask mandates worked. In fact, they did the opposite. They pushed the transmission much further.

“So those were very suboptimal approaches, and many people died.

Many business owners, many children died because of the lockdowns and school closures.

“We must never allow our public officials, our governments, this type of emergency powers to impose these types of actions.

“I want to focus on kids at risk.

There were studies done in Sweden, middle of last year, (that) looked at all of the Swedish kids from 0 to 16, all of the kids going to school.

No lockdowns, no mask mandates, nothing. And they found of 2 million children, there were zero instances of death.

“There was a good study in the French Alps, … and they found that one child infected symptomatic, moved around to three different schools, contaminated a bunch of teachers and other kids, 120 close contacts. They followed through contact tracing, and there were no instances of secondary transmission.

“So we had that data for over 15 months. So when Rochelle Walensky (head of the CDC) and (Dr. Anthony) Fauci, etc., come to the podium and state that this is new data coming to their attention now, they are misleading the public and misleading the world.

“They have known for over one year now that children bring nearzero risk to the table. Children don’t readily spread this virus to other children or to adults. We see that the transmission is from adult to child.

“Children don’t get severely ill, and children don’t readily die from

this infection. … We are being fed a lot of misleading information constantly.

“I wrote a recent op-ed, and basically the title was ‘We must consider our children today to be vaccinated and fully immune.’

“My thesis was this: If you look at research by Patel, which was limited to two receptors in the nostrils, … work that showed that children have this preactivated, innate immunity that is already primed to respond, … work that also found the B cell responses in children were already primed due to past coronavirus exposure, … work that showed that children’s T cell immunity was very, very positioned to be able to be trained properly and respond to the SARS-V2, … findings at Yale, and their study showed that children’s innate immunity … puts them in a much better position to SARS-V2 in terms of responding, higher levels than adults.

“So my argument was that collectively, children biologically from a molecular point of view have this defense already.

“This is the argument: If children come with a natural protection in their nostrils, I think it’s a very good hypothesis, that if we introduced the vaccine into the deltoid as Dr. Malone was explaining, we have evidence from the Japanese biodistribution study that shows that the contents of the vaccine gets into systemic circulation.

“So we know the content of the vaccine and the spike is getting into the bloodstream. “… So the question is very simple: If the spike protein — based on all these experts, from what they explain to us, and I have no reason to disbelieve because I’m reading the science carefully— if the spike protein is operating as a pathogen and potentially damages the vasculature and can lead to blood clotting, bleeding, Guillian Barré syndrome, why would we bypass the natural protection that children have in their nostrils?

“Children have been spared by COVID today.

“If we introduce the vaccine into the deltoid, we run the risk of getting spike and content into the system.

“My argument has been — and I have published this — we might run the risk of killing thousands of American children and children across the world with these vaccines. “… The CDC, the NIH, the FDA and all the vaccine developers are protected by liability protection.

The only persons at risk in this are the children.

“So if these agencies bring liability protection to the table and say we are going to remove it, then we should have a conversation.

“But children were at such low risk to begin with. The children are not candidates for these vaccines. Children should be able to ride this out on their own, and they will be fine.

“So I’m saying not now, not in the future, no vaccines. Under no condition must we allow this.”

“I just have a few comments to add to what Dr. Alexander said.

“We have millions of children in the U.S. The estimate is the majority of them actually have had COVID-19.

Thank goodness. They’ve already been through it.

“Most parents have missed it because it was a drippy nose.

It was so mild that the children in a sense have been spared from this plague. And this is absolutely a real blessing.

“Importantly, there are now two analyses that I think everyone should be aware of. One is by Tracy Hoeg from the University of California at Davis. It was published in late August, where she used the VAERS data. She analyzed reports of myocarditis. This is heart

inflammation. “… It’s now known that the vaccine itself from preclinical and clinical observations causes myocarditis. It is not a conjecture. The vaccines cause myocarditis. “… What does this mean? This means, although it’s rare, that, in fact, it can happen. What Tracy Hoeg showed is it’s more likely for a child to be hospitalized with myocarditis than taking your chance with COVID-19 and having the rare circumstance that a child gets hospitalized with COVID-19.

“And it doesn’t assume anything with respect to treatment. So if we had a child who developed COVID-19 with some mild treatments, easy-to-administer treatments, those with severe symptoms can be spared the hospitalization.

“So the Hoeg analysis was heard on two occasions in September and October by the U.S. FDA, by presenters who are in a sense on our team, among individuals in this room and closely aligned.

“So what I am telling you is our experts know this. Our CDC and FDA know this. They know that children, your children, your grandchildren are more likely to be harmed with the vaccines than they are to be helped in terms of being spared COVID-19 hospitalization and death.

“A second major analysis, published in Toxicology Reports, the title of the paper, ‘Why are we vaccinating children for COVID-19?’

“This analysis dealt with mortality. And across every age group, an individual who took the vaccine, more prominently in the older age groups, was more likely to die after the vaccine than actually take your chances with COVID and ultimately die of COVID. “I can tell you the application of these data are going to translate.

There will be children lost with the vaccines.

“There will be far more children lost with the vaccines than ever having the threat of COVID. “For the children, we will look back, and we’ll say we were better off before than when the vaccines came in.

“COVID-19 has been a menace for our population, but largely for seniors. Seniors have suffered. …

Now the menace, particularly over our children, is the vaccine. “… Think about the virus, and think about the vaccine. With respect to exposure to the spike protein and how the spike protein basically translates pathogenesis into the human body, in a sense they are one in the same.

“Dose one is the pathogenic respiratory virus. The second dose if people get them are actually spike protein through the vaccine.

“So I agree with Dr. Alexander, and I agree with premises that Dr. Malone has created: Childhood vaccination is off the table.

“Children will not have the ability at age 12 to make their own decisions regarding the potentially fatal administration of an injectable product you cannot get out of the body.

“Do not let a child make a decision at that age.”

Neighborhood groups wary of home-sharing rules Although city officials were blase about the potential for conflict, some citizens are raising alarm about regulations permitting hosted rentals in residential areas.

he City Commission didn’t see things his way in October, but Chris Goglia is bracing for a series of unintended consequences if officials don’t revise their plans to legalize short-term rentals for properties where a host remains on site.

Last month, the commission voted unanimously to direct staff to prepare an ordinance that would permit “hosted rentals,” or home-sharing, in residentially zoned areas. The goal of the legislation, city leaders said, was to allow homeowners to rent a portion of their properties on vacation rental websites, such as Airbnb.

A majority of the commissioners said they did not feel that such rental activity would cause problems for neighboring properties, so they did not instruct staff to include any major regulatory requirements in the ordinance.

At the October meeting, Goglia said he wasn’t opposed to legalizing home-sharing, but he encouraged the city to be rigorous in examining for any loopholes. Since then, the president of the St. Armands Residents Association has grown stronger in his convictions, and his list of concerns has expanded.

This week, Goglia struck on a new point of concern: If homeowners decided to rent out a portion of the property on which they claim a homestead exemption, the rental activity would nullify their right to a portion of that exemption. If homesharers did not realize the effect the rentals would have on their home-

stead exemption, they could eventually be required to pay back taxes and fines for homestead fraud.

Homesteaded home-sharers would be forced to navigate the tax provisions that come with renting out their primary residence, but Goglia said nonhomesteaded property owners would not have to deal with such challenges. That’s to the benefit of a hypothetical investor seeking to turn a home into a commercial rental property, Goglia argued. “(Commissioners) say they want home-sharing to help people struggling to make ends meet,” Goglia said. “But based on my conversation with the county property appraiser’s office, it’s actually going to hurt the people they say they want to help, and it’s going to help absentee landlords.”

During the October commission meeting, a majority of the board indicated that it was not concerned about the prospect of problems arising in the future when officials have not presently identified a problem with home-sharing that is occurring in conflict with city regulations.

“To act like we’ve got to be scared of this eventuality that the neighborhood goes away is just crazy,” Commissioner Hagen Brody said.

“The proof is in the pudding. We have dozens of these operating right now in the city of Sarasota that don’t pose an issue.”

Still, Goglia encouraged the city to establish regulations on who could serve as a host, how many people could stay as guests and the duration of visits. He’s not alone: At a Saturday meeting of the Coalition of City Neighborhood Associations, representatives for resident groups

Brian Loughrey, the chief deputy with the Sarasota County Property Appraiser, affirmed that homeowners could not claim a homestead exemption on any portion of their property that they use for more than 30 days of rental activity per year.

mean they lose 25%, depending on the amount of space being rented.

Loughrey said the annual notices the property appraiser mails out notify homeowners that renting their property could affect their homestead status. Still, he could not say how well versed property owners are in the legal complexities of home-sharing.

“Do people (actually) know all of these statutes?” Loughrey said. “I would say no, they’re probably not aware.”

Goglia and other residents concerned about home-sharing will have the opportunity to make their case to the commission on Monday, Nov. 15, when the board revisits its conversation at the request of Commissioner Jen Ahearn-Koch.

A LOT MORE BEACH A renourishment project on Lido Beach added nearly 700,000 cubic yards of sand to a 1.56-mile segment of the barrier island, widening the beach by an average of 300 feet, the city said. The project also included the construction of two sand-retaining groins on south Lido Key. Officials gathered in May to celebrate, batting specially branded beach balls around instead of a traditional ribbon-cutting.

Even while you’re gone, news just kept on happening.

Here’s what you missed.

iss a summer, miss a lot around here.

Sure, The North is probably a far-more palatable option for Florida’s Days of Humidity, but by heading up Interstate 75, you literally turn your back on a cauldron of news that’s still bubbling when you return.

If you fly between here and there, you might have noticed your cozy little neighborhood airport has grown up, even adding another airline in recent weeks.

And with record-setting passenger traffic, it’s pretty likely you noticed more airplanes, more people and a general sense of hubbub.

A lot of the summertime news revolved around the beach, with red tide taking center stage.

But the blooms we dealt with this season weren’t as broad or as consistent. On Siesta, efforts are moving ahead to become an incorporated town. On St. Armands, guess what? Development is the focus of a lot of news.

So as we are wont to do around here, we’ve packaged it all for you in our annual Welcome Back presentation, with the top 10 stories you might have missed, along with a selection of journalistic appetizers, tidbits that amused us to the point we thought we’d share.

IT WAS A SHIFTSHOW. WE SAID WHAT WE SAID. For a couple days there in August, it seemed you really couldn’t get there from here. “There” was pretty much anything west of the bayfront, and “here” was anywhere else in Sarasota.

To be honest, FDOT and city people warned us.

But once road builders actually reset the traffic patterns through the intersection of Gulfstream Avenue and U.S. 41 to accommodate the next phase of roundabout construction, chaos followed.

Heading north through the intersection? Nope.

Heading south through the intersection? Not as such.

Turning left into Golden Gate Point? Yeah, that’s a detour to Bird Key and back (then it became a right turn).

We called it a shift-show on our editorial page.

Things have smoothed out over the ensuing

weeks, largely because of eagle-eyed drivers going with the flow and accepting that driving on the left side of the highway is OK sometimes. Plus, we hear, a lot of people are just avoiding it altogether.

Patience, though, will be what gets us through.

There’s another year of this in some form or another until the $8.6 million roundabout project wraps up in late 2022.

MASKS, THEN A REVERSAL School leaders in August enacted a 90-day mandate for students, faculty and staff to wear masks, voting 3-2 to defy state regulations that sought to prohibit local officials from implementing such a measure.

The school district mandate included provisions for monitoring the local positivity rate of COVID-19 tests and ending the mandate if that fell below 8% for three consecutive days. It also allowed for medical exemptions and a return of the mandate if the positivity rate climbed

SRQ GETS BUSIER AND BUSIER Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport is finished comparing this air-travel year to the pandemic-truncated travel season of 2020 or even the year that came right before.

Passenger records fueled by a resurgence in flights — largely from Southwest and Allegiant — fell in August, making 2021 the busiest ever at SRQ. In October, SRQ added its 11th airline with the announcement of Avelo

back to 10% for three days in a row.

At the time, the positivity rate in Sarasota County was 18.6%. These days, it’s around 2.6%.

So, in early October, the school board rescinded the rule, reinstated field trips and campus visits, and essentially returned as close to normal as conditions would permit.

In between, though, there were rows over public comments, doctors who filled out dozens of medical exemptions, rules to address who could provide exemption documentation and enough rancor for an entire year.

Three years ago, the airport offered 12 nonstop destinations from six carriers. Now, 51 destinations are available.

Plans are in place to one day build five new gates, and over the next decade, the Sarasota Manatee Airport Authority intends to add more commercial, hotel and office space to the property it owns in north Sarasota, particularly on land along University Parkway.

RED TIDE COMES AND GOES Red tide along Lido and Siesta keys and in Sarasota Bay was a problem over the summer, but it was not a consistent, long-lasting issue.

The on-again-offagain bloom differed from outbreaks in years past, when the smell, breathing effects and dead fish lasted for weeks and weeks on end.

In July, county health officials issued a notice that each of Sarasota’s 16 public beaches tested positive for elevated levels of red tide, though initial reports of localized effects were received in April.

Health advisories were issued urging those with chronic conditions to stay away from the shore.

A storm passing far offshore was credited with breaking up some of the bloom, and in September, health officials reported every one of the county’s 16 beaches was free of red tide.

Of late, a return of westerly winds pushed some blooms back toward the shore, with a few reports of dead fish and odors. Last week, there were no reports of red tide effects anywhere in Manatee or Sarasota counties.

TRUMP FANS COME TO SEE THEIR MAN Sarasota locals and visitors gathered to support former President Donald Trump at an outdoor “Save America” rally at the Sarasota Fairgrounds.

Attendees entered the area at 2 p.m., where they picked up drinks, snacks and Trump merchandise. They then listened to live music waiting for the former president to speak at 8 p.m.

Fireworks followed the speeches.

SIESTA KEY WORKS TOWARD INCORPORATION Organizers of Siesta Key’s push for incorporation delivered its feasibility study to the state right on time in September and fielded questions from the Florida legislators who would have to help move the local effort ahead.

On Sept. 30, during a meeting of the local legislative delegation, Save Siesta Key board member Harry Anand outlined the impetus for the group’s campaign.

The group, which formed in March, hopes to get a question on the ballot asking Siesta Key residents whether they support creating a new town. For that to happen, state legislators must first authorize the referendum.

Rep. Will Robinson, a Republican whose District 71 includes the north end of Siesta Key, said he had concerns about the feasibility study that Save Siesta Key submitted as part of its application. Robinson said he was hesitant to authorize another layer of government and taxation and that incorporation is a tool officials don’t frequently use in Florida, with only two municipalities added statewide since 2006.

Rep. Fiona McFarland, a Republican whose District 72 includes the rest of Siesta Key, asked whether incorporation was the best solution if Siesta residents were satisfied with most of the government services currently available to them.

LEGACY TRAIL GETS LONGER From a project featuring twists and turns to one that’s practically arrow-straight, we bring you the latest from Sarasota County’s Legacy Trail.

As you might have noticed on your tax bill, you’ve been paying for the $65 million extension for some time now. But, since July, the fruits of that tax money have been showing up.

First, a segment of new trail from Bahia Vista Street to Proctor Road opened as a standalone section along the former Seaboard Coastline right of way. Then, more recently, the southern end of that segment was linked to the existing trail that runs from Palmer Ranch to Venice.

A one-way trip now measures 19.6 miles. And work is underway to link the northern end to Payne Park.

Overpasses at Clark Road and Bee Ridge Road are planned but likely won’t be open until late 2024.

IT’S A BRAND-NEW CAR! What started out as a simple quest to get a T-shirt from a YouTube star ended up with a new Tesla for a Sarasota family.

And they have their 9-year-old son, Alexander Hedge, to thank for it.

Alexander, a fan of MrBeast on the video-sharing site, purchased a limited-time T-shirt from the MrBeast account. But what the Hedges didn’t know was that the purchase entered them into a giveaway for a Tesla.

Of those 35,000 entrants, Alexander Hedge’s name was chosen. He and his father are now the owners of the all-electric 2021 Model 3. The car retails between $40,000 and $56,000.

Oh, and he got his T-shirt, too.

THE ARTS FIND A WAY After more than a year of virtual performances or scaled-down shows in outdoor locations, Sarasota-area arts organizations were ready to get back to normal.

But how, with COVID-19 still a concern?

A coalition of organizations, which make up the bulk of the arts scene in Sarasota, decided to together require a negative COVID-19 test for anyone attending a performance.

Alternatively, proof of full vaccination would be accepted, getting around state regulations regarding vaccine mandates.

Among the groups: Asolo Repertory Theatre, Circus Arts Conservatory, Florida Studio Theatre, Hermitage Artist Retreat, Sarasota Ballet, Sarasota Opera, Sarasota Orchestra, Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall and Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe.

Protocols will be revisited and may be revised based on CDC guidance and the evolving circumstances of the pandemic, including use of additional screening protocols.

HURRICANE SEASON? MEH. Hurricane (briefly) Elsa was the only tropical system that Sarasota County concerned itself with this season, and even that turned out to deliver minimal impacts.

In early July, forecasters predicted the intensifying storm would pass close enough to the coastline on its way north to prompt alerts.

As the hurricane passed the coast of Sarasota County, the area received about 2 inches of rain. A wind gust of 54 mph was recorded at Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport in a squall, though the highest sustained winds were charted at 35 mph.

Flooding was reported in the south end of Sarasota County, though no homes were impacted. No street closures were reported in the north end of the county.

Hurricane season lasts until the end of November, by the way.

MIXED-USE CONCEPT FLOATED FOR ST. ARMANDS Ideas, concepts, proposals, words of support and criticisms have flown around St. Armands Circle of late. In the old days, we’d have said you could float a boat with all the colorful ink used to produce dramatic artists’ renditions of a mixed-use hub, with a hotel and grocery, just off the center of the shopping district.

Now it’s all computer art, but the point is made.

On May 17, Gavin Meshad delivered a presentation to the City Commission on behalf of commercial development firm JWM Management outlining the concept on a 1.98-acre city-owned parking lot.

City commissioners are still weighing the notion of selling the lot, keeping in mind that public parking is at a premium in St. Armands Circle.

SEAGRASS DECLINE AN ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERN A decline by 18% over two years in Sarasota Bay seagrass might not sound immediately perilous — until you realize the trend has been underway for more than a decade.

Preliminary results from the Southwest Florida Water Management District show an 18% decline in seagrass across Sarasota Bay, Roberts Bay and Little Sarasota Bay from 2018 to 2020. The decline equates to loss of 2,300 acres of seagrass.

“Having healthy seagrass is really important to our bay ecosystem because about 75% of marine life have some part of their life in seagrass, so this is not great,” Sarasota Baywatch Secretary John Ryan said back in May. Numbers in the 1950s sat at about 10,246 acres and steadily built from there, but now the loss, which scientists say is largely due to red tide and Hurricane Irma, means the area basically has to start over.

The first phase of The Bay Sarasota is not yet complete, but Cathy Layton already sees signs of the transformative power she believes the $150 million park project will have.

Layton chairs the board of directors for The Bay Park Conservancy, the group leading an effort to redevelop more than 50 acres of cityowned property surrounding Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall. During a Nov. 3 presentation at the Observer Media Group’s Wine and Wisdom event, Layton outlined the eightyear process that took the bayfront renovation effort from a grassroots idea to a partnership with the city.

She highlighted the work The Bay leadership has done to improve a mangrove bayou on the southern end of the site. When the group began its cleanup efforts, the wetlands were nearly devoid of marine life. Following the environmental rehabilitation and the opening of the mangrove walkway earlier this year, visitors have sighted manatees in the area.

Layton said.

What’s next? A meeting on Monday with the City Commission to discuss proposed revisions to the terms of the public-private partnership governing the development and the management of the park. According to information included with the agenda for Monday’s meeting, the conservancy and city staff prepared the proposed changes jointly.

The agenda states the revisions are reflective of the information both parties have gathered during the first two years of a formal partnership, and it seeks to eliminate some procedural requirements attached to the development of the bayfront site.

Layton said The Bay Park Conservancy believes that the changes the organization has proposed could save five years on the construction timeline and up to $30 million in capital expenses.

“There’s no reason this park shouldn’t be done as soon as possible,” Layton said.

TOWEL THROWDOWN 1:51 a.m. — 200 block of North Tamiami Trail Dispute: An employee at a hotel said a guest called earlier in the evening requesting towels and toilet paper for her room. restaurant said a customer entered the drive-thru to pick up an order.

The manager asked the customer to pull her car into a parking spot until the order was ready, at which point the customer became enraged and started to scream at the manager.

The manager said the customer refused to move her car, causing the drive-thru line to back up. The customer said she ordered her food online and was upset the order was not ready when she arrived. The customer said she did not want to wait for her food and that the manager was rude and yelled at her.

FAMILY FEUD 5:59 p.m. — 2900 block of Palmadelia Avenue Dispute: An officer responded to a dispute between two people, one of whom was moving out of a home. A woman identified the man moving out as her nephew, and she said things were going fine until his family showed up. An officer spoke to the man who was moving out, who said the woman started an argument about his family members being present while he was moving out.

The man said the woman did not explain why she was upset. Officers stood by while the man collected his belongings.

arasota’s local philanthropy figures were recognized for their work improving the community during a celebration luncheon Nov. 9.

More than 200 nonprofit representatives and philanthropist honorees attended the National Philanthropy Day luncheon hosted by the Florida Southwest Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals at Michael’s On East. Attendees picked up nametags in the outdoor space before heading into the ballroom to network and reconnect with friends.

Chapter President Janet Ginn welcomed the audience once everyone had settled down for lunch. She expressed her joy at seeing everyone assembled after nearly two years. “(We’re) celebrating a promise of an amazing tomorrow for the generations to come,” Ginn said.

The audience then heard from co-chairs Declan Sheehy with New College Foundation and Debra Flynt-Garrett with Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe, and later by speaker Linda Larson.

There was a surprise as well: WBTT Founder Nate Jacobs regaled the crowd with a rendition of “Higher and Higher” and “You Are So Beautiful.”

n the playoffs, every snap counts, and two teams — Riverview High (8-2) and Cardinal Mooney High (7-3) — will have the chance to make the most of theirs.

The Rams and Cougars advanced to the Florida High School Athletic Association postseason, which starts Friday, and both teams face challenges with opportunities to learn from past losses.

When the Rams travel to Steinbrenner High in Tampa to take on the Warriors (7-3), they’ll do so coming off a 21-14 road win over Charlotte High on Nov. 4. Ask Rams Coach Josh Smithers if he was happy with how his team ended the regular season, and he’ll hesitate.

“I’m happy we were able to get a win,” Smithers said. “We didn’t play real well. We had a ton of penalties and I think three turnovers. We did some things, made some mistakes that we hadn’t made in a while. But that being said, you always have games where you don’t play well. I’m proud of our guys for finding a way to win. It would have been easy for us to lay down and get frustrated and let Charlotte beat us, but our kids didn’t do that. They kept fighting.”

Smithers said the mistakes were partly a result of a short week — playing on a Thursday — and partly a lingering effect of the team’s 42-7 road loss to Venice High the previous week. The team had a bit of a mental lapse, Smithers said, but he believes the Rams will not have the same issues going forward.

If history is any indication, cleaning up the little details will be a big key against the Warriors. In 2019, Riverview lost to Steinbrenner 27-25 in a home playoff game. The Rams had 22 penalties in that game, resulting in 183 yards. In a game decided by less than a field goal, it’s not a stretch to call that penalty yardage the difference in the outcome. Smithers is well aware of the impact those penalties had on the game.

“It’s ironic that we’re talking about this stuff now because of what happened (in 2019),” Smithers said.

“The Charlotte game was actually a good opportunity for us to preach and focus on those things this week.

We have to make sure we don’t have another 22-penalty game and hand the game to them.”

If the Rams are able to avoid those mental mistakes, they’ll likely be led offensively by senior running back Jay’den Birch, who Smithers said has impressed him over the course of the season. Birch played well last year behind then-senior

Michael Hayes, Smithers said, but also dealt with a few injuries that limited his on-field opportunities.

In 2021, Birch has stayed healthy and become a workhorse of his own.

Entering the postseason, Birch has 1,008 yards on 168 carries (6.0 yards a carry) and 11 touchdowns.

“He’s doing it all for us,” Smithers said. “He’s getting the tough yards.

He’s breaking long runs. He’s done a great job in protection. He’s caught some balls out of the backfield. It’s a nice luxury to have. It’s not a surprise because we knew he could do it, but it’s nice to see him do as well as he has.”

Smithers added that he’s counting on his defense to create more turnovers this postseason than they have in the regular season. They’ve had some in key situations, such as last week when Triston Parsons had an interception in the fourth quarter to help seal the win, but not enough overall. If the Rams can add that capability to a consistent defense in terms of points allowed, it could be a major force. Smithers said he will instill that attitude in practice this week, having players do a set of pushups if they drop an interception.

“It’s just a mentality,” Smithers said. “They need to always be punching at the ball and doing everything they can do to get it back.”

At Cardinal Mooney, second-year Head Coach Jared Clark is tightlipped about what the team has in store for Bishop Verot High (5-4) when the two teams meet for the second time in three weeks in Fort Myers on Friday night, not wanting to say

anything that will tip off the Vikings to their plan of attack. But Clark did say that the fundamentals will be a difference-maker for the Cougars.

“We have to block well, tackle well and execute the little things well,” Clark said. “I’m happy with how hard we worked throughout the year to get here. We’ve gotten better.”

Clark said the previous game against the Vikings was well played by both teams; Bishop Verot simply made a few more plays in the end.

The Cougars likely will need to open more holes in the running game than they did the first time. Cardinal Mooney rushed 32 times for 110 yards, for an average of 3.4 yards a carry. That’s well below the Cougars’ season average of 5.6 yards a carry.

What the Cougars could use is a repeat performance from freshman wide receiver Ryan Matulevich, who had eight catches for 91 yards and a touchdown. Matulevich, who is 6-foot and 192 pounds, received his first NCAA FBS offer from Arkansas State on Oct. 19. He’ll likely be matched up against Bishop Verot senior cornerback Chris Graves, who is a Rivals four-star recruit and is committed to Miami.

Defensively, the Cougars did a great job of limiting Graves — who also plays wide receiver — to two catches for 9 yards, but they will need to be wary of giving up big plays.

Three different Vikings had catches of 24 yards or more, and Bishop Verot freshman running Carter Smith broke a 39-yard run.

Championship week

T

he trek to the fall sports state championship events is reaching its last stop.

After this weekend, only football will remain for area schools. Swimming and crosscountry will be done, and with any luck, our athletes will end those seasons with medals around their necks. Then all attention turns to the winter sports — which have started, by the way. Cardinal Mooney played a girls soccer game Tuesday night. The Cougars beat Braden River High 1-0, and former Sarasota Athlete of the Week Allessia Ukmar made five saves to secure the shutout. I’ll likely be talking more about that talented Cougars team soon, but not yet. The area has championships to win first.

A week after besting Venice High by five points at the schools’ district meet, the Sarasota High boys swimming team did the same thing at the schools’ Class 4A Region 2 meet, this time by 13 points. The Sailors got wins in the 200- (1:28.03) and 400-yard (3:11.56) freestyle relays, plus individual wins by junior Liam Heary in the 50-yard freestyle (21.62) and the 100-yard breaststroke (57.84) and senior Cole Firlie in the 200-yard freestyle (1:43.28).

Sailors junior Evan Keogh finished second in the 100-yard backstroke (51.52) and third in the 200-yard individual medley (1:56.08). Among other strong results, those top-end finishes propelled the Sailors to their overall win.

They’ll have a chance to repeat as state champs — in a tougher class, remember — at the FHSAA meet on Friday at the Sailfish Splash Waterpark and Aquatics Center in Stuart.

It will not be an easy task. None of the Sailors are seeded higher than third in their individual events or relays, which means that their depth again might play the biggest factor. But don’t count them out. I certainly won’t.

Riverview High is not in contention for the team title, but Rams senior Liam Custer does have the top-seeded time in the class in the 200 individual medley (1:52.56) and is third in the 500 freestyle (4:33.88).

On the girls side of the Class 4A meet, it’s Riverview High who has a chance to do something special at states. The Rams won their side of the meet by 139 points over Venice. Rams sophomore Addison Sauickie won the 200-yard freestyle (1:49.70), senior Sarah Sensenbrenner won the 100-yard backstroke (56.65), and sophomore Gracie Weyant — the sister of Olympic silver medalist Emma Weyant — won the 200-yard individual medley (2:04.40) and the 100-yard breaststroke (1:03.43).

The Rams also won the 200-yard medley relay (1:47.70), the 200yard freestyle relay (1:37.42) and the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:31.33).

entering the FHSAA state meet, and Sensenbrenner’s 100 backstroke time is second. Other Rams’ times are also in the top five, such as Bethany Rahn, who is seeded fifth in the 200 freestyle (1:53.31).

The team has a chance to do serious damage and possibly get its best finish since 2015, when the Rams finished second overall to Buchholz High (which was in year one of an insane four-year title run). How cool would it be to have both the boys and girls swimming titles come home to Sarasota? It’s a possibility.

By the way, Sarasota girls swimmer Sumner Chmielewski has an opportunity to bring home hardware of her own. She’s seeded second to Weyant in the 200 IM (2:05.08) and first in the 500 freestyle (4:52.79).

Then we have the cross-country state meets, which also take place this weekend. (You couldn’t space these things out a bit, FHSAA? Help a sports reporter out!)

Sarasota High junior girls runner Ella Menke finished fourth at the Sailors Class 4A regional meet (19:42.60), held Nov. 4 at Holloway Park in Lakeland. Menke has a shot at a top-10 finish at the state meet, which will be held Friday at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee. The Apalachee course is notoriously hilly, and a lot of runners hate it, making any high finish there all the more impressive. Menke finished 34th last year (20:11.30), and no matter what, she’s on pace to crush that time in 2021.

At the 1A level, Cardinal Mooney sophomore Addison Dempsey finished sixth at the team’s regional meet (19:35.60), also held Nov. 4 at Holloway Park. Dempsey was the only Cougars girls runner to compete at the regional meet. No one from Mooney reached the girls state meet last season, either. Getting there at all is a cool accomplishment for Dempsey.

And then there’s football. I wrote some objective words about the football playoffs in this week’s feature story, but my column is a chance to be subjective, so here it is: I love the postseason. I love driving for an hour and a half on a Friday night to a school I’ve never heard of previously and watching one of our local teams beat them down over the course of three hours. I love watching that while wearing my light jacket for the first time in nine months, maybe even putting the jacket’s hood up to ward off the rain, because that’s real football weather. I love debating with others on the sideline about whether a team should go for a fourth down in a crucial situation or play it safe and punt. When any given play could spell the end of a team’s season, every play is exciting.

I think both Sarasota teams in the postseason — Riverview and Cardinal Mooney — can win Friday. Will they both win? I don’t know. They’re both on the road.

That’s tough. The Rams (8-2) play at Steinbrenner High (7-3). It’s a chance for the team to get payback for a postseason loss in 2019. The Cougars (7-3) will travel to Bishop Verot High (5-4), where the Cougars lost 28-17 on Oct. 22.

Both Riverview and Mooney should have plenty of motivation.

That’s good. Ultimately, I think two wide receivers — Riverview senior Jaron Glover and Cardinal Mooney freshman Ryan Matulevich — can be the difference for their teams.

We’ll see if I’m right.

When did you start swimming?

I started swimming competitively when I was about 9. I grew up in the pool, but before then I didn’t really do anything, just splashed around. I always loved watching the Olympics.

That’s what got me interested in swimming for real.

What is your favorite event?

Either the 400 individual medley or the 400 freestyle, I can’t pick. I just have a good feel for those events when I am in the water.

What was your biggest challenge this year?

I actually was in the hospital early this summer, before the Olympic trials in June. I had a plural effusion, which basically means I had water around my lungs. The doctors don’t know what caused it, but they said it should not recur. It was a scary event in my life, but I kept working. The doctors first said I wouldn’t be able to swim again for three months. I defied the odds (laughs). I was back swimming again in two weeks and able to compete in the trials and the high school season and everything.

Why commit to Florida?

The coaches and the girls. Everyone was super welcoming whenever I went to visit. It showed me that I can be the best person I can be (at Florida) in and out of the pool. And, obviously, having Anthony Nesty, an Olympic assistant coach, as my future head coach is awesome. I’m excited about that, especially with all the success the team had in distance events in Tokyo.

What are your current goals?

With the Winter Junior Championships next month (in Greensboro, North Carolina), I’d like to come home a champion in a couple events.

I hope my team (Sarasota Sharks) can pull some wins in some relays.

We’re juiced up about that. And then I have World Championship Trials in April (also in Greensboro), so I’m hoping that me and some teammates will qualify for Russia then.

What is your favorite food?

My favorite food is pasta. There’s just so many different combinations.

It’s what I eat the night before big races.

Our reporter goes medieval at two festivals over a weekend.

am not a fantasy guy.

I’m a nerd, for sure, but I fell asleep watching “Lord of the

Rings” as a kid. My dad is still surprised I never warmed to

those “elf movies.”

But life’s short and for living, and I soon learned that Sarasota was going to be having not one but two medieval festivals in November.

How often are there knights and elf people in your town? Here’s how they went.

I quickly realized what I’d be in for at the renaissance fest when I met a group of well-dressed lords and ladies near the entrance.

I was expecting a few Peters and Pauls, maybe a Chet, but they introduced themselves as Prince of Jon of England, Sir Gui of Gisborn and the Sheriff of Nottingham.

I was impressed: They had fancy swords, a high-born way of talking and a refusal to break character.

It seemed like almost everyone was in costume — elves, sorcerers, pirates, even a few steampunk operators. Children were going on elephant rides while others were firing arrows at the archery zone.

And it’s not just performers. Whole families come in period costumes, helping to set the scene better than a guy in a Dale Earnhardt Jr. T-shirt.

At the far end of the Suncoast Renaissance F a i r , there is a man n a m e d Dustin Cawood — but call him the Pickle Man. If you’re polite and carry coin, he will sell you pickles. He also has a macaw named

Maui Wowee, who will bid you hello.

The bird can also curse at you.

SARASOTA MEDIEVAL FAIR

It was a muddy Sunday when I arrived at the Sarasota Medieval Fair, which I supposed played up the medieval filth of it all.

Throngs milled about the fair, picking up gifts and drinking mead and checking out the attractions.

There were birds of prey shows, plays for the children and even a small market area selling turkey legs and still more mead.

There weren’t as many people in costumes, but those who were dressed up looked off the chain.

Alessandra Pisano cared for birds of prey as a medieval bird keeper.

Justin Peeples donned a complete armored knight design. Andrea Meythaler and Joe Monach were a disproportionately hot couple dressed as dragon lords Queen Volastra and King Deusignus.

Sarasota Medieval Fair had two adorned knights charging at each other to cheering crowds, though a couple guys heckled the production.

I have to give it to Suncoast Renaissance Festival, though. Theirs was a duel between Sir Brom and Sir Lilith — actors Jarrod Listiak and Erin Eisenmann, respectively — that had the two jousting, throwing each other off horses, tossing sand in each other’s eyes while clashing swords.

It was like pro wrestling but more (and less) dorky.

Jarrod Listiak is a full-time performer with Noble Cause Productions who’s been jousting as Sir Brom for 20 years in the U.S. and Europe.

“We’re out here every Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. rehearsing,” Connelly said. “You have to have trust in your fighting partner. These people are like my family.”

I’m not sure spinning kicks and suplexes are typically seen in chess, but call it historical revisionism.

Walking into the Sarasota Medieval Fair, I met Seneca Puleo, a Sarasota resident who attends every year with her mother, Eve. They usually dress up in costume, and it’s been something of a tradition.

But Eve died from ALS last year.

Puleo is going to the fair every weekend this month in tribute.

“It’s been rough,” Puleo said. “She wanted to come last year, but COVID prevented it. I’m glad to be here. It sounds tacky, but I can feel her here.”

These things matter — costumes and color and make-believe. It’s all tradition and community that become important for so many. It’s silly but so fun, and it’s real enough.

I didn’t see it then, but I do now.

I’m going to both fairs next year, maybe as a jester. Hope to see you there.

All Faiths opens turkey distribution

OLLI at Ringling College Offers Lifelong Learning at Its Best!

T

he COVID-19 pandemic has brought a greater need for food donations to serve local families, and All Faiths Food Bank CEO Sandra Frank isn’t surprised that need has carried over into 2021.

“We expected it,” Frank said. “We expected two years of recovery, and sure enough, we’re buying more food today than we bought in 2020.”

She and her organization have tried to meet that need with the start of its turkey distribution initiative Nov. 6 at the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall.

The event — in partnership with The Bay Sarasota and Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall — started at 9 a.m. Saturday. Volunteers met and organized arriving cars to stop so they could deliver turkeys, drinks, frozen side dishes and other holiday staples.

With the help of donor support with its ThankFULL campaign and local grants, the organization is attempting to provide 12,500 turkey meals and more than 3 million meals for families through the end of the year. The next distribution will be held at 4 p.m. Nov. 18 at Ed Smith Stadium.

OLLI at Ringling College offers intellectually stimulating, non-credit courses and learning opportunities designed for adults “50 and better.” We strive to enrich the lives of our members by offering affordable, high-quality educational programs and social interaction with their peers.

Our curriculum is liberal arts-based and includes multi-session courses, lectures, workshops, and special events. Programs are offered year-round both online and in-person at the beautiful Ringling College Museum Campus.

ain fell and thunder rumbled across Sarasota on Friday — bad news when trying to launch a new monthly event series.

The city’s first edition of Fresh Friday persevered, though, attracting more than 500 people who danced and mingled the night away around Lemon Avenue and State Street.

A handful of vendors were on hand passing out pizza, sushi and other food for guests. Two DJs were also on site playing music while the band Southbound 75 got people rocking out and dancing with live performances.

Joseph Grano, the president of the Next-Mark marketing and communications company promoting the event on behalf of the city, was relieved to see people respond to the event. He and staff had been planning Fresh Friday for the past three weeks after the city approved funding in early October.

“It’s the best day ever (now that) we pulled it off,” Grano said. “The weather took a flip, but here we are.”

The next Fresh Friday is in the first week of December with a holiday kickoff theme.
