Chabad Center for Jewish Life Introduces New Torah Scroll

T

he Chabad Center for Jewish Life at 2174 Hewlett Avenue in Merrick introduced a new Torah scroll to the community and its members at the Merrick Gazebo recently to the delight of many of its members.

Once several members had an opportunity to inscribe a letter into the new Torah, the congregation marched along Merrick Avenue to the sanctuary on Hewlett Avenue.

Marching the Torah to its new location man and family, is important to the center because “It’s better to have more than one Torah for the High Holy Days,” remarked Rabbi Shimon Kramer. He added that it was time for a new scroll, as the other one had been getting good use.

He added that for those who inscribed a letter, they “inscribe that letter into perpetuity.”

M. Joe Azrak said the new scroll is terrific, because it’s historical. After inscribing a letter into the new scroll, he said “This is the sixth scroll I’ve signed.” He noted the other signings of new Torahs

took place in Jerusalem.

Cindy and Lawrence Knoll were delighted with the new scroll. It’s amazing, said Cindy, to have a new sacred Torah.

“It’s a real mitzvah to have a new Torah in the community.”

The Torah Scroll is the most sacred literature in Judaism, and is thought to compose the words of God as given by Moses to the Jewish people. It has passed from generation to generation for at least three millennia. The Torah consists of dozens of parchment sheets and 304,805 character letters.

But the Bellmore Lions may have been closest to his heart, where he remained active for decades, and last year received the Robert J. Uplinger Distinguished Service Award for service to the Lions. Roy also developed the bi-weekly Lions Club flea market that now thrives.

Remembering Roy Weinman INTRODUCTION

W

hen an immigrant family landed in the U.S. during the escalation of the Vietnam War, a family that had spent years processing the legal papers to enter, live and work in a country that offered them a new family frontier to experience, it was a scant three months before the eldest son, at 18 years old, received a letter from the Selective Service Administration claiming that the new immigrant son, nowhere near a citizen, was being classified as 1A – to become eligible to be drafted into the armed forces to possibly serve in Vietnam.

The letter had come after the young man had found employment, and had enrolled and entered university.

The following summer, the now 19 year old, in preparing to go back to his former country to visit with friends, was required to speak in front of the Selective Service (draft) Board, located in Freeport at the time - before even considering boarding a plane to his former homeland. Accompanied by his father, the young man stood before the board and explained his decisions for wishing to leave the country for a short period – to visit and re-energize lifelong friendships he had put on hold with this move, many friendships that had begun in elementary school.

Because the 19 year-old was not a citizen, the board could not require him to stay in the country against his wishes, as it could other older American teens from venturing beyond U.S. borders on a pretext of vacation only to become “draft dodgers” to an unpopular war now in progress. BUT … the board could keep the 19 year-old from re-entering the country again to be with his family.

The young man was granted his opportunity to leave and be permitted to come back to his family – when he was ready.

On that board, however, was a man named Roy Weinman, of wide community stature and reverence for his ideals toward family and fairness, a man who had seen both the family hardships and great flourishes of hope in the hometown he loved and called Bellmore.

“It was his duty to serve on that board,” his wife Myrna would say, “but it would have to be an extraordinary situation to keep someone from entering the military” during that time.

It is hard now to imagine any other outcome for that young man arguing before the draft board that day than to be permitted to leave for a visit and return again to the sanctity of family life … without the humanitarian nature and influence of Roy Weinman on that draft

board.

It is with this deep understanding of the nature of the man that Your NewsMag remembers Roy Weinman:

I worked with Roy for more than 30 years. I worked with Roy promoting business in Bellmore with the Chamber of Commerce. I worked with Roy doing good charitable work of the Lions Club. I worked with Roy on the revitalization of Bedford Avenue and Bellmore Village, a project that became the prototype for so many similar projects around Nassau County.

Bellmore is just another small town like so many others around this country of ours. Every small town has people who make living there special. Special people give a community a personality and identity all of its own. They become symbols of what small town America is. They are special lives.

Roy Weinman was Bellmore’s own. He lived here, he worked here, he gave his time here, he gave his efforts here, he gave his love to Bellmore and all the people who lived here with him. Roy’s life was a Norman Rockwell painting of Bellmore.

It’s only fitting to honor Roy on the

street where he spent so much of his life, right in the middle of the village that meant so much to him, When I look up and see Roy’s name, I will think of a wonderful man who did so much for his community, our community.

I can only hope that there are more Roy Weinmans out there who will love their community and do as much for it as our dear friend Roy. I, as well as so many of us … will miss him and all that he meant to our lives. It may be an old cliché, but most clichés are based in reality. Bellmore will never be the same without Roy Weinman.

Lion Roy Weinman was the Vice-President of our 70 year-old Bellmore Lions Club. Well spoken, articulate and always a consummate gentleman, Roy could be counted on to always inspire others to join Lionism.

Roy was a visionary. He introduced our club to the concept of having a regular flea market that could raise funds to help others. The Sunday Flea Market in Bellmore bloomed under his guidance. Lion Roy would often be found at the market speaking and joking with community residents, visitors and vendors. Wherever [CONT. ON PAGE 17]

Fall Festivities

Bellmore and Merrick annual fall festivals were jammed packed with great entertainment, games, rides and good old-fashioned family fun. Were you at the fair? Photos from the fair are inside, even more are available on facebook. Look for your photo and photos of friends and family.

Meanwhile in Bellmore, before kicking off the The Chamber of Commerce of the Bellmores Family Festival, Bedford Avenue was given an honorary name, Roy Weinman Avenue. Roy was a lifelong Bellmore resident and store owner on Bedford Avenue. He was a community minded person known for his generous, kind and overall good nature.

And now, the street where Roy had his family business for 92 years, has been dedicated in his honor with an additional name, Roy Weinman Avenue.

Following the street name dedication the Chamber of Commerce of the Bellmores opening ceremony included a beautiful rendition of "The Star Spangled Banner" by Kennedy High School alumni Nicolette Kosowski.

The victims of the 9-11 terrorist attack are never to be forgotten. Several local residents’ lives were cut short on this day of infamy, including many of whom rushed into harm’s way to save countless others, only to pay the supreme sacrifice themselves. The names of the men and woman from Bellmore and Merrick that lost their lives as a result of the 9-11 attack are listed inside. They will never be forgotten.

Nephew Follows in Uncle’s Footsteps as Bellmore Firefighter

t two years old James Rand was too young to understand what was about to unfold in his household on the morning of Tuesday, September 11, 2001.

“I was watching at work as planes flew into the World Trade Center” remarked Deborah Rand, mother of James, more commonly known as “Jimmy.” She called her husband and told him to go to his mother Maryanne’s house, as she was there alone.

Deb’s husband, also named Jimmy, rushed to his mother’s house where they watched in horror as the two World Trade Center towers, one by one, collapsed into columns of dust and debris that sent shock waves around the world.

“When I saw the second tower fall, I knew my son Adam was in that tower,” said Maryanne, grandmother of little Jimmy. She called it simply a “mother’s intuition.”

That intuition proved profound, as her son Adam, brother to Jimmy and uncle of little “Jimmy,” had rushed to the towers in a blaze of sirens from his job as firefighter at firehouse station 288 in

The 16 years of “little” Jimmy Rand’s life since that day have been the ultimate preparation for his induction into the fire department by Bellmore Fire Chief Thomas Stroeger on September 25 as a “probie,” which for Jimmy is the first formal step in following in his uncle’s footsteps to become a full-fledged firefighter.

“Having a young firefighter such as Jimmy will be an asset to the fire department,” said Chief Stroeger. “It was an honor to swear Jimmy in as it was an honor to have known Adam,” Chief Stroeger continued. He called Adam an “integral member of the fire department” because he trained all the new probies and firefighters on a variety of firefighting techniques.

Interior Class A firefighter Corey Mumolo told Your NewsMag it will be “pretty cool” to work with Jimmy, because of the family history and because Jimmy will also be part of Number 7 fire truck, which is Mumolo’s truck and was Adam’s fire truck.

“I don’t remember anything of that day [9-11] because I was too young,” Jimmy told Your NewsMag. What Jimmy does remember, however, is the way in which his uncle became the constant topic of nearly all conversations around him, of how the members of the Bellmore Fire Department came to embrace him, and bring him to golf and fishing outings held in the memory of both Uncle Adam and Bellmore firefighter Kevin Prior, who also died in the collapse.

Before 9-11 “Adam would take Jimmy to the firehouse, where he would climb all over the trucks and other equipment,” said Deb. “He also watched the parades, and drove in the Number 7 truck that Adam rode in,” Maryanne added.

“But I was afraid of the fire department when I first started going,” remembers Jimmy, notably because it was the working environment in which his uncle had died, and “I didn’t want any part of that.”

Soon enough, however, Jimmy became comfortable with the constant company of firefighters he found himself in, and [CONT. ON PAGE 17]

The Promise of a New Year

his year promises to be a wonderful year filled with meaning, spirituality and hope for the future. As the holidays approach, the synagogue has already begun preparations and the clergy, Cantor Eitan Binet and I have been planning for spiritually uplifting services. The board leadership and the various committees are hard at work making Temple Beth El a warm, inviting place to be - a home away from home.

Rosh Hashanah is the Jewish new year. It centers around reflecting about the past and looking forward to the future. We think about our deeds and our misdeeds and promise to become better people. We are judged by our Maker and pray that we will be written in the Book of Life.

We also try to come closer to God and allow the haunting cantorial liturgical tunes of the high holidays to enter our hearts and our souls. We aim to feel God's presence in our lives. In addition, we try to give as

much charity to the poor as possible and to support our synagogue and other communal institutions.

This year, some will choose to also give toward disaster relief from the recent hurricanes. It is traditional during the new year to wish people a sweet new year and, with this symbolism in mind, it is traditional to eat apples dipped in honey.

Following Rosh Hashanah is the day of atonement, otherwise known as Yom Kippur. Yom Kippur is a more solemn day in which we ask God for forgiveness for our sins and ask to be sealed in the Book of Life.

Yom Kippur also includes a traditional liturgical formula for the canceling of our vows, called Kol Nidre.

Thus, the service for the evening of Yom Kippur is sometimes also called the Kol Nidre service. Through Kol Nidre and its powerful tune we begin the process of self-reflection and inner spiritual work, which - along with fasting, not bathing or wearing perfume, not engaging in intimate relations, and not wearing leather shoes -

serves to transform our very being.

When Yom Kippur ends, we break the fast and begin eating again (now having abstained from food and liquids for over 24 hours). It is a time of celebration and hope, with the idea that we have all already been written and sealed in the Book of Life and that we can look forward to a bright and sweet new year.

It is also traditional on that night, just as Yom Kippur has ended, to begin building a booth called a sukkah.

Who Needs a Gym?

F

all is a fabulous time to get outside and appreciate the beauty of nature. While you are outside enjoying the weather, why not get a workout in at the same time.

You don’t need a gym in order to get or stay fit.

There are many exercises you can do during a walk around your neighborhood or in the local park. These include walking lunges or side squats as you are walking. You could also do step-ups on a bench, stepping on and off the bench, switching legs. All of these will strengthen and tone your leg and butt muscles.

For your upper body, you could do pushups against a railing or fence, standing on your toes, holding your hands shoulder width apart. The further away your feet are from the railing or fence, the harder the exercise. You can also stop at a bench and do tricep dips on the seat and/or push ups against the back.

Another idea is to bring resistance tubing with you (in a backpack with your water bottle) and do a row on a tree or pole. When you come to a tree or pole, wrap the tubing around the trunk or pole, hold both handles

chest high, and step back till there is tension in the tubing. Pull your arms back in a rowing motion, keeping your elbows close to your body, then straighten arms towards the tree, then repeat. This exercise works your back muscles. Next, turn your body to face away from the pole or tree holding the handles in each hand chest high. Stay at a distance where there is tension in the tubing.

Then do a chest press, pushing your arms out straight, then pulling your elbows back. This works the chest (pectoral) muscles.

For variety, stop at various points in your walk, and do a set of jumping jacks. Then walk a little further and do another set of jumping jacks. Or carry 3 or 5 lb. dumbbells with you and do bicep curls and shoulder presses in short intervals while you walk.

If you incorporate some or all of these ideas into an outdoor walk, you will dramatically be improving your fitness level through elevating your heart rate and burning additional calories. I often take my clients outside for this type of workout when the weather is nice. Who needs a gym?

REMEMBERING ROY WEINMAN [CONT. FROM PAGE 3]

he went, Lion Roy was always working within the spirit of Lionism, whether through service activities or just enjoying the camaraderie of people.

Lion Roy embraced change and always showed tremendous respect to others. When the Bellmore Lions Club welcomed the inclusion of women in 2001, it was Roy who would remind his fellow Lions to be mindful of giving respect to the women present. As the oldest Lion in our club, Roy became a role model and a mentor to the younger Lions and Leos. He was always a fair and kind leader, and always thinking of ways to help those less fortunate or ways to improve our community.

Lion Roy left his mark in our community and had tremendous impact in the Bellmore Lions Club. As a Lion, he inspired others to join and serve, he was a major advocate for acts of service and for getting youth involved. He valued our community

and he garnered tremendous respect for being a kind, caring individual.

As a veteran, Roy never missed an opportunity to honor anyone in service, and always participated in the Memorial Day Parade. Although he received numerous awards and accolades for his humanitarian efforts, Roy remained a humble man, always trying to give credit to others rather than to himself.

Everyone in the Bellmore Lions Club has fond memories of Roy. We laughed with him often and always sought his advice and counsel – always! When word of Roy’s passing spread among the members, we shed tears at the loss of this great man. In his honor, we continue to look for ways to be of service to those in need. That is the greatest tribute we can pay to this great man who was a leader, an advocate for others, a mentor, a humanitarian, a celebrated veteran, a father, a husband, a friend and a dedicated Lion.

Lion Roy Weinman, you will be missed here in our world, but your

spirit lives on in all those who help others in the name of Lionism.

While here on earth, you made miracles happen in the lives of those who were in need. You will never be forgotten, and I look forward to serving alongside you again someday, in friendship and service.

We will all remember Roy for his kindness, compassion and friendship.

Serving the Bellmore community was always a priority for Roy. I remember going into Weinman’s Hardware store one day working on fixing a faucet that was leaking. Roy explained that I need a part that he was sure was the problem and a special tool to remove the old part.

He only asked me to pay for the part as he said, and I quote, “Oh, just take the tool and return it when you’re done.” This is an example of how much he cared about helping people.

Thank you, Mr. Weinman, you have forever touched my heart.

Jimmy’s eventual embrace of his “firefighter family” became complete when, in school and for special projects, he would use photos of 9-11, which parents of Jimmy’s classmates didn’t want their children to see. “We weren’t going to stop him from doing those projects,” said Jimmy’s mother, because that was how he was coping and feeling about it.

Jimmy will remain a probie for at least six months, in which he will train with the department but will not be permitted to enter burning premises or work EMS cases. In spring, he said, he will then train at the fire academy in Bethpage for several weeks toward a certificate, which will give him more flexibility with the fire department.

In October he will take the New York City firefighter exam in hopes of becoming a New York City firefighter. “I could wait a week, a month or a whole year before I’m called,” Jimmy says, soberly. Once he is called, he says, he will then have take a series of tests to determine his ability to handle firefighting duties at any new firehouse that calls him in.

Bellmore Memorial Library to Host Indie Author Day

T

he Bellmore Memorial Library will host the annual Indie Author Day on October 14, from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. This free event will offer presentations by published authors, video publishing workshops, local-author panels, book readings, an “Author’s Alley” and other opportunities for aspiring writers and interested readers to mingle with authors.

This is a unique opportunity for the community to come together in the library to help local self-published and independent authors get discovered, and for readers to find new books written by fellow community members. It also brings together authors and patrons to learn more about traditional and independent publishing from industry experts.

Included among authors in attendance will be North Merokian children’s author Judy Pernice, who writes the children’s series The Adventures of Annabelle. She has been a self-published author for over

“I have always created stories for the children. I wrote one down over five years ago and about a year ago I revisited it,” she told Your NewsMag. She said she has a “stack” of six-to-eight stories that she is nearly done with that will be published soon. Each book is usually from 15-16 pages.

A self-published author, she uses Balboa Press, a Division of Hay House.

Once the book is finished, she says the publisher then distributes it to online distributors such as Amazon.Com, and Barnes & Noble.com.

Writing for children from K-3rd grade, her stories take the form of rhymes, in which illustrations then make the point.

KJ Farrell’s Sunday Night Open Jam is a Musician’s Dream

ichard “Buzz” Bergen of Bellmore was returning to KJ Farrrell’s popular Sunday Open Jam Night after a prolonged absence. As a former saxophonist for the Rolling Stones tribute band Streetfighter, he was looking to maintain his musical timing by playing within a group setting.

Bergen’s former Bellmore neighbor Corine Ulano-Firestone was also at open mic night, as she has for the last nine years, even when it was only on Monday nights. The singer spoke of the thrill of camaraderie shared among the many musicians who come to play at open mic night.

Another “almost” regular was guitarist Ronnie Rivitusi, formerly of the Beatles tribute band Abbey Road. He liked to come to open mic night because “we never know what we are going to play once placed together as an ensemble.”

After signing in, the three were serendipitously grouped together for the first time by Merokian Curt Arnel, host of Sunday night’s Open Jam Night and drummer for the band Off The Record.

with a drummer and organist – and Off The Record’s bassist and guitarist, to serve as anchors to the first-time-playing-together band.

The new band was permitted to play a quick set of three songs, so they all huddled to discuss options, along with the

bassist and guitarist. “We’re not scared that we haven’t played together before,” Ulano-Firestone assured the crowd before taking control of the stage and ripping in to “You Can’t Always Get What You Want,” “Proud Mary” and “Angel of the Morning.”

This is precisely how Sunday’s Open Jam Night works, Arnel told Your NewsMag. Musicians come in on Sunday night, sign in and Arnel matches them according to their talents to play on stage to see what transpires.

While the Open Jam Night at KJ Farrell’s, 20 Pettit Avenue in Bellmore, was traditionally a Monday night affair, only over the last year has it expanded to include Sunday night as well. Craig Kelly, co-owner of KJ Farrell’s along with Bellmore resident Kevin Sheehan, said “We do live music seven nights a week, but could only do it six nights a week” recently until Off The Record took over Sunday nights.

Kelly heard that Off The Record had been successful at Callahan’s in East Meadow in hosting open mic nights, and offered the band a slot as the host house band for Sunday night, which could once again complete the music venue’s seven-nights-a-week schedule of offering live music.

Old friendships were renewed at a multi-class JFK Alumni reunion at Tropix in Freeport, as everyone reacted as though they had just seen one another yesterday. Smiles and emotions lit up the room as everyone shared childhood stories and talked about their present lives. Everyone realized that these childhood friendships are among the most important relationships they have, other than family. As kids, no one cared if your house was bigger, your car was more expensive or where you bought your clothes. What all learned is that your high school friends remain your friends, plain and simple. The Class of 1971 had the largest turnout with about 15 people from that year. RON STEIGER

live nightly venue like KJ Farrell’s anywhere else in Nassau County – and perhaps Long Island.

Arnel told Your NewsMag that Off The Record - which plays several Saturday night club dates a month as a band, mixing largely classic rock with pop rock, blues and funk - found success as a host band for open mic nights at the old Jugs & Strokers location on Sunrise Highway in Merrick. The band’s next opportunity arose at Callahan’s in East Meadow, where the band hosted a Thursday night Open Jam Night, which lasted four years before the location was sold.

In addition to the musicians from tribute bands, Arnel says. “A musician from the band Sha-Na-Na has played, as well as a member of the band Riot.”

Arnel also noted that a musician from Merokian pop star Debbie Gibson’s band has played, as have musicians

who have recorded their own CDs. Open Jam night is a musicians’ community, and the quality level is fairly high, Arnel said. “These musicians can adapt fairly well because they listen to each other, and know many of the songs they are going to play.”

SUNY Oneonta music student Harrison Bromberg recently played at the open mic night, saying jamming with the house band was an experience unlike any other. “I learned how to be in sync with other musicians.” He said that “just because you rock in the basement, doesn’t mean you rock on stage.”

Arnel echoed those words, concluding that exposure to “jamming live on three songs with others you don’t know is the equivalent of two weeks’ worth of playing songs in practice.”
