he Chamber of Commerce of the Bellmores and its proud members present to you the 2021 Official Bellmore Almanac.

This almanac is the official community guide that is filled with interesting and informative details about the Bellmores. We invite you to keep the almanac and use it as a handy reference guide throughout the year. In addition to engaging facts about the Bellmores, this interesting guide also includes information about the wonderful community events sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce, as well as emergency and other important phone numbers.

To assist you in shopping locally, there is a list of chamber member businesses, both by the category they serve and alphabetical name. We hope you will enjoy the almanac and at-

tend the family friendly events the chamber sponsors throughout the year that help make the Bellmores among the most attractive destinations anywhere on the South Shore.

The Bellmores have a rich history and for over 60 years the chamber has been supporting commerce and contributing to preserving its history. Over the years the Chamber has been responsible for many major projects including the Village revitalization in 1990s, the recent installation of the new Bellmore Village sign adorning the train trestle, and the restoration of the historical railroad shelter located on Pettit Avenue across from the fire station. The chamber takes pride in Bellmore and invests in its past and supports its future.

The Bellmores began as a destination for farm and seafaring commerce, as farmers and

baymen from far and wide traveled for goods and services to maintain their livelihoods and their families. And a bustling commercial center it was!

That spirit for commerce success is in abundance in the Bellmores even more today as the Chamber of Commerce works to draw new members to share in a vision of hope for a more exciting future for everyone in the Bellmores.

The chamber Friday Night Car Show and Bellmore Family Festival are classic examples of the chamber at work drawing revelers to the Bellmores.

History of the Bellmores

he community of Bellmore traces its beginnings back to 1676, and was considered a farming and fishing town until fairly recently in history. Known as both Little Neck and Newbridge, the town officially became Bellmore in 1900 when the post office was established. The post office was located in a general store near the station.

Meanwhile, North Bellmore was initially called Smithville in the 1850s because of the many Smithville family members that lived in the surrounding area.

Residents petitioned for a Smithville post office in 1869 but they were refused, because there was already a Smithville in upstate New York. Instead they named the post office Smithville South until 1920 when the post office was renamed North Bellmore.

The busy Long Island Railroad station in the center of town made Bellmore a commuter’s paradise in the 1920s and the population began to grow significantly. Farmland in the

Smithville South area was subdivided for housing, and construction of Sunrise Highway brought more settlers, and then the housing boom after WWII brought the biggest population boom of all.

The town merchants decided to make the lighting an annual event.

To further recognize the holiday the community gathered in the town for the lighting of a large evergreen tree.

The Menorah lighting while a Bellmore Celebrates 300 Years tradition in the Jewish homes, emerged into public celebration when the country embraced the idea of all religious expressions be acknowledged together in the spirit of inclusion within the town, and laws were passed to ensure public inclusion.

Today, the Chamber of Commerce of the Bellmores continues the tradition of celebrating the spirit of the holiday season by placing decorate holiday snowflakes throughout the Bellmores and inviting the community to partake in an annual Christmas Tree and Menorah Lighting as well as a spectacular Holiday Extravaganza.

Bellmore Chamber Preserving And Improving The Bellmores

T

he Chamber of Commerce of the Bellmores mission is to represent business, both large and small by promoting the education, success and prosperity of its members, and to address problems and concerns with running a business.

In keeping with their mission the chamber raises funds from the annual Bellmore Family Street Festival and Friday Night Car Show to host holiday celebrations for the community and earmark funds towards improvements that support the success of commerce in the Bellmores.

Downtown Revitalization In the late 1990s the chamber downtown revitalization along Bedford Avenue included placing a green sign with gold lettering on the trestle above Bellmore Avenue saying, Bell-

more Village “a stroll down memory lane.� In keeping with the charm intended, the revitalization project included old-fashioned street posts and pleasant music playing for shoppers as they walk through the town.

Replace Fading Bellmore Village Sign After over twenty years, the once beautiful Bellmore Village sign had seen better days. Peeling and fading, the sign needed to be replaced because it no longer matched the charm and vibrancy of the town. Just in time for the 2018 street festival, a new sign in a new color was changed from green to burgundy to both match the chamber logo color and stand out more for all to see.

Restoration of Historic Railroad Shelter In 2019 the chamber took on another project, the restoration of a circa 1890 Long Island railroad shelter. The rail road shelter was acquired from the Historical Society which dissolved on December 31, 2014. On January 30, 2015, the Bellmore chamber was granted exclusive use of the railroad shelter by the Town of Hempstead.

In May 1995 the over 100 year old shelter got its first facelift when Louis Sofia, Jr., a member of Boy Scout Troop 285 in Bellmore set out to update the shelter as a project to attain the rank of Eagle Scout. He replaced the roof and gave the exterior a fresh coat of paint.

Over time, the old train house had become an eyesore and was in poor condition. The Chamber stepped in to preserve this cherished piece of history for future generations to see and enjoy. The railroad shelter has been restored and is being used as a storage shed for the chamber. The historic Bellmore railroad shelter is located on Pettit Avenue in front of the current LIRR train station.

T

he Chamber of Commerce of the Bellmores invites residents to participate in their annual Easter Parade. The parade will be lead by none other

than the famous Easter Bunny on Saturday, March 27, 2021. Children and their families will meet at 11:45 a.m. at the firehouse on Pettit Avenue, just north of

the LIRR Bellmore station. At noon, the Easter Bunny will lead the parade through the village up Bedford Avenue to Oak Street where the children

will have a chance to have their picture taken in a spring setting with the Easter Bunny and enjoy Easter treats compliments of the chamber.

BELLMORE’S FRIDAY NIGHT CAR SHOW, A MAJOR LONG ISLAND ATTRACTION

A

mong many historical achievements in Bellmore is the first car show, which began in 1999 at the same Long Island Rail Road parking location that it is presently held. It was then called the Friday Night Cruisers, a resident run traveling car show that experienced success in whichever town it landed in, including Bellmore.

At the time, Bellmore was promoting its new down town image as a “restored village” renaming Bedford Avenue as Bellmore Village. It was among the first towns in Nassau County to put old style street lighting in, add benches and pavers as well as restore several storefronts to reflect an earlier era. The car show, with its antique and hot rod cars fit that enchanting image to perfection.

The car show brings an influx of people to not only look at all the interesting cars, but to shop and dine while they are here. When the popularity of the car show grew to the point where it required management in order to

continue the Chamber of Commerce of the Bellmores stepped in and got a town permit to run the car show on Friday nights providing control over cars entering the lot, portable restrooms, guaranteed cleanup after the show and assistance to commuters to safely leave the lot once returning home from work on the LIRR. The Friday Night Car Show is every Friday night, weather permitting, from the first Friday in May to the first Friday in October from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. at the Bellmore LIRR Parking Lot on Broadway between Bell-

more Avenue and Bedford Avenue.

Come down and join the fun! It is free for spectators and admission to showcase a car is $5.00. Funds collected from car entry fees go back into the Bellmores and are used for the many improvements and events the chamber sponsors.

Now in it’s ninth year, the chamber Friday Night Car Show is still one of the finest car shows in the country which contributes to keeping Bellmore front and center as one of the best places to live and work on Long Island.

34th Annual Bellmore Family Street Festival

T

he 34th Annual Bellmore Family Street Festival, presented by the Chamber of Commerce of the Bellmores, will take place this year on September 25 and 26 with the carnival starting on Thursday and Friday nights, September 23 and 24, and continuing throughout the weekend.

(Festival Rain Date: October 23 & 24) The festival features a wide variety of exhibits and attractions, and has earned the reputation of Nassau County’s largest family oriented event of its kind. More than 120,000 visitors come to Bellmore.

This fabulous family festival gives the chamber and its members a chance to say thank you to the community for shopping and doing business locally. The Bellmore Family Street Festival is also an excellent opportunity for local nonprofit groups to raise funds and share important information with the public.

The festival has an area that will delight everyone while still showcasing all the chamber members. The festival features a Kids Expo with child friendly rides and special attractions just for children; a Craft Expo featuring only hand-crafted vendors; new exciting exhibits, music and entertainment provided throughout each day of the festival. Halloween Parade

of children and their parents dressed up in a variety of colorful character costumes will head up Bedford Avenue through the town where haunting spooky music can be heard throughout the downtown district as the children trickor-treat their way up the avenue.

All merchants that have “Mr. Pumpkin” in their window participate in handing out treats to the children. There will also be a Halloween inspired backdrop so parents can take keepsake pictures of their children dressed as princesses, mummies, witches and alike. The chamber invites you to bring your children in their scary and not so scary costumes for a day of gathering and fun!

ach year, during the third week in October, the Chamber of Commerce of the Bellmores hosts their annual spooktacular Halloween Parade and Trick-or-Treating for the children of the community. This year the festive parade will be Saturday, October 23, 2021.

Menorah Lighting

uring Hanukkah the festival of lights is celebrated in the community by lighting the Chamber of Commerce ten-foot Menorah located in the Bellmore Village at the Veterans Memorial.

Please check the chamber website, bellmorechamber.com, for the date of the lighting when Rabbi Dahlia Bernstein from Congregation Beth Ohr in Bellmore will lead in prayer as the Menorah is

lit. People are encouraged to sing along with children from the synagogue singing favorite Hanukkah songs. Treats such as chocolate gelt will provided by the Chamber of Commerce of the Bellmores.

Christmas Tree Lighting And Holiday Extravaganza

o welcome in the holiday season the Bellmore Chamber of Commerce strategically places festive holiday decorations in Bellmore Village and winter snowflakes on light posts throughout the Bellmores for maximum viewing and impact.

The annual Christmas Tree Lighting and Holiday Extravaganza is a most memorable event filled with fun for the entire family. Just imagine the joy of taking an enchanted horse drawn carriage ride and a trol-
