Your Health Magazine is on a mission. There are far too many people, insured or not, who do not go to the doctor when they should, and in millions of cases, don’t know who they should go to, or why.
People are encouraged to buy a new house, car, cell phone or big screen TV, and those companies make themselves very visible and their products easily attainable.
Information about, and from, local healthcare providers is not easy to find, and many times those services are difficult to access.
Information and encouragement always lowers fear and trepidation about anything, and this is especially true in healthcare. While general information is available on web-sites, specific information from local providers is almost impossible for people to find. This is one of the key reasons chronic and episodic conditions are not cared for. It is our mission to:
Make A Difference By Empowering and Encouraging People To Live Healthier By Going To the Doctor When They Should.
There is a lot of evidence that the health professionals who participate in Your Health Magazine have helped many people over the years. We at Your Health Magazine salute you!

Seven Steps To Healthy Glowing Skin At Any Age New Lasers
and the Latest No-Downtime Procedures
By Hema Sundaram, MA, MD, FAAD Sundaram Dermatology
How do you view midlife? Most of us have every expectation that this stage of life and beyond will be active, fulfilling and productive.
Our skin is the largest organ in our body and the mirror of everything inside. It’s natural to want our skin to reflect externally the energy and vitality we strive for internally. This life philosophy is redefining midlife, and revolutionizing skin health, for which the specialist doctors are cosmetic dermatologists. We are especially inspired by our patients in their 80s and 90s who are living life to its fullest, and typically taken for being 20-30 years younger than they actually are!
The idea of looking and feeling good at any age has inspired groundbreaking nonsurgical strategies that naturally rejuvenate you, while preserving your individuality and avoiding an overdone look. For the latest thinking from the world’s cosmetic experts, read the article in RealSelf, “The 7 Buzziest Treatment Launches” at https:// www.realself.com/news/cosmetic-treatment-launches-2022
In recent academy teaching for dermatologists and plastic surgeons, we have focused on the real science behind stateof-the-art techniques and technologies. The key concept is to rejuvenate your skin layer by layer by harnessing your body’s own capacity to renew itself. This approach reflects advanced understanding of the aging process and, if started in time, can save you from ever having to go under the surgical knife.
Step 1: Choose An Expert: The American Board of Medical Specialties recognizes four types of specialists as being appropriately qualified and trained
to perform cosmetic procedures – Board Certified Dermatologists, Plastic Surgeons, Oculoplastic Surgeons and Facial Plastic Surgeons.
Step 2: The uppermost layer of your skin can be treated with Elos Plus photofacials, VBeam pulsed dye laser, micro-laser and chemical peels, to fade discolorations, spider veins, prominent pores, acne and rosacea and give your skin a beautiful glow.
Step 3: Photofacials can be alternated with DermaSweep MD, a medical-strength, crystal-free alternative to microdermabrasion, which painlessly polishes your skin with silk and other brushes and then infuses it with customized therapies to fade discolorations, tighten pores and make your skin radiant and youthful.
Step 4: The upper and middle skin layers can be stimulated to create new collagen and elastin with fractional resurfacing lasers like the new eMatrix Sublative, eTwo, Co2RE or Fraxel. These are exciting technologies that remove wrinkles, scars, stretch marks and other blemishes with no scarring and little or no down time.
Step 5: Fillers like Voluma, Juvederm, Restylane, Juvederm, Revaesse and RHA are pure, synthetic forms of natural hyaluronic acid to precisely replace the volume that our skin loses with time. Radiesse is a natural calcium-based filler. Sculptra is another effective volumizer. Don’t be fooled by social media stories. The key to amazing and completely natural results is to have a real expert perform your treatments. When used properly, these fillers, as well as your own natural fat containing stem cells, can fill “smoker’s lines” around the mouth, gaunt cheeks and under-eye hollows, shape your brows, and sculpt your profile. Truly expert technique doesn’t just fill wrinkles – it actually restores your face, to create ideal contours and lift your face subtly and beautifully with no scarring or down time. Recent research shows that fillers placed in the right way can actually stimulate your skin to produce new collagen and elastin,
for more natural and longer-lasting results.
A recent addition is platelet-rich plasma (PRP) with microneedling – the socalled “vampire face lift” – that harnesses the regenerative power of your body’s own healing processes to achieve smooth, radiant skin. Studies show that PRP is also effective for hair loss, and emerging uses include treatment of vitiligo (loss of color from the skin) and improvement of scars.
Step 6: The lowest layer of your skin can be treated with Ultherapy, Exilis Ultra or Sublime lasers, the newest no-downtime, no-surgery face lifting and tightening treatments. Ultherapy tightens collagen and elastic tissue, to lift your brows and cheeks, define your chin and jawline, and tighten and lift your neck, chest, abdomen, buttocks, arms and elsewhere. You will see prompt results that improve even more over time. Stimulation of your skin’s selftightening is long lasting and can take years or decades off you.
These revolutionary lasers not only tighten and lift; they can also improve loose skin, cellulite and stretch marks on areas such as your stomach, arms, buttocks and legs.
Kybella injections or Laser Lipo treat-
ments can remove unwanted fat with no down time and no anesthesia to chisel your jawline. You can also melt fat away painlessly from your hips, abdomen, waistline, buttocks, arms and other areas.
Step 7: Precise doses of the muscle relaxers Botox, Dysport, or Xeomin or Jeuveau can be injected with expert technique to gently and safely relax overactive muscles, smooth frown lines, worry lines, crow’s feet, lines around the mouth and neck wrinkles, while preserving your natural facial expressions and avoiding a telltale frozen look.
Rather than focusing on individual procedures, this multi-level makeover integrates state-of-the-art techniques to achieve subtle, natural-looking results with no surgery, scarring or recovery time.
This highly sophisticated approach doesn’t change you into the cliche of a “new you.” Better yet, it empowers you to re-discover the Real You, balancing how you feel inside with how you look outside. Scientific studies show that a youthful and harmonious appearance makes the best first impression on others, and maximizes our personal and professional success at all ages.
Understanding and Overcoming Urinary Incontinence
By Kari Bailey, MD Anne Arundel Urology
Urinary incontinence, a prevalent condition affecting millions worldwide, poses significant challenges to those living with it. Defined as the involuntary leakage of urine, this condition can disrupt daily life, impacting social interactions, self-esteem, and overall well-being. As a urologist, it’s imperative to shed light on this condition, its causes, and the array of treatments
available to manage it effectively.
Types and Triggers
Urinary incontinence comes in various forms, each with its own triggers. Stress incontinence, often linked to weakened pelvic muscles, contrasts with urge incontinence’s sudden, strong bladder contractions. Mixed incontinence combines aspects of both, highlighting the complexity in diagnosis and management.
Getting To the Root: Diagnostic Journey Made Simple
To tackle urinary incontinence, understanding its root cause is key. Urologists employ straightforward diagnostic methods, including medical history discussions and basic physical exams, sometimes coupled with specialized tests like bladder function studies. This process helps uncover the underlying issues, guiding tailored treatment plans.
Lifestyle and Behavioral Shifts
You don’t need drastic measures to make a difference. Simple lifestyle
Innovative Treatments
changes, like managing fluid intake and incorporating pelvic floor exercises into your routine, can significantly improve symptoms, especially in stress incontinence cases. Additionally, behavioral therapies like bladder training and scheduled voiding can help regain control and reduce urgency.
Medication Matters: Targeted Solutions For Enhanced Comfort
For individuals with more severe or persistent symptoms, pharmacotherapy may be recommended. Medications targeting overactive bladder muscles, such as anticholinergics or beta-3 adrenergic agonists, can help reduce urgency and frequency of urination. In some cases, hormone therapy or topical estrogen may be prescribed to strengthen pelvic tissues and alleviate symptoms, especially in postmenopausal women.
Minimally Invasive Solutions
For those seeking more advanced solutions, minimally invasive procedures offer hope. Techniques like sling placement, urethral bulking, Botox, or neuromodulation can provide lasting relief, with minimal disruption to daily life. These options can make a significant difference in your quality of life.
Collaborative Care: Navigating the Journey Together
It’s important to recognize that treatment for urinary incontinence is not one-size-fits-all; rather, it requires a personalized approach tailored to the individual’s unique needs and circumstances. As a urologist, my goal is to empower patients with knowledge, support, and effective interventions to regain control over their bladder function and enhance their quality of life. By fostering open communication and collaboration, we can navigate the complexities of urinary incontinence together, striving for optimal outcomes and improved well-being for all affected individuals.

You probably know family and friends whose lives were cut short by heart disease or cancer. Then you ask yourself “Is there any way to keep that from happening to me?” The answer is “yes.” Today there is a simple non-invasive test that can often identify these illnesses in their earliest stages, when they can most effectively be treated and cured.
It’s called the Virtual Physical. The Virtual Physical takes less than twenty minutes and is a safe, painless, high-speed full Body, Heart and Colon scan. It has already saved many lives by uncovering many illnesses like cancer, heart disease, aneurysms, and tumors.
The Virtual Physical is a test that gives you the advantage in finding diseases and abnormalities at their early stages, long before symptoms occur.
Make the choice that could save your Life.
Missing Multiple Teeth?
Arch Treatment Options
A dental arch is either the top or bottom set of teeth in your mouth. When all or many teeth are missing or get to a stage where substituting them is recommended, then a full arch replacement becomes necessary. This can replace a full arch, either in the lower or upper jaw. There are more options available now than ever for full arch treatment.
Removable Dentures
Before the introduction of dental implants, people who were missing many teeth and needed a full arch replacement had few options aside from unstable, ill-fitting and uncomfortable dentures. Dentures often require adhesives, which can be unpleasant and fail to come close to initiating the form and function of natural teeth.
The upside is that dentures are relatively inexpensive, and they are easy to remove and clean.
Four Implant Overdenture (Snap On/Removable)
Stabilized overdentures look like traditional, removable dentures. However, there are four locators on the under-side of your “plate,” which attach on top of implant abutments. Snap on dentures essentially clip into place. There’s no rocking, shifting, or rubbing, because your implants keep

Women’s Teeth and Gums
By Karl A. Smith, DDS, MS ditions that affect pregnant women.
A smile is the first impression that communicates a woman’s happiness and confidence; if you wish to keep your winning smile out in front, you will want to take special care of what’s behind it – your periodontal (gum) health.
Periodontal health is connected to a woman’s overall health. As your health care needs change throughout your life, during puberty, pregnancy, and menopause, your oral care needs may change.
Hormonal fluctuations during these times may affect your gum tissue and the underlying bone that support your teeth. These changes may increase your susceptibility to periodontal disease and require you to take special care of your oral health.
Gum Care During Puberty
When a young woman enters puberty, the production of sex hormones, such as progesterone and estrogen increase. Studies show that these elevated hormone levels may cause gum sensitivity and lead to a greater reaction to any irritation, including food particles and plaque. During this time, the gums can become swollen, turn red, and may feel tender.
Menstruation and Gingivitis
During menstruation, some women may experience gingivitis. This condition may cause gingival (gum) bleeding, redness or swelling of the gums, sores on the inside of the lip and cheek, a slight burning sensation or gum discomfort. It is important to maintain good oral health during these hormonal fluctuations. However, in some cases, periodontal treatment and antimicrobial agents may be recommended to ensure that your periodontal health is at its best.
Pregnancy and Gum Disease
If you are pregnant, or planning to become pregnant, you need to know that your periodontal health can affect your pregnancy and ultimately the health of your baby. Studies have shown that any infection, including gum infection during pregnancy, may put you at a significant risk of delivering a preterm, low birth weight baby.
If you are already pregnant and have been diagnosed with periodontal disease by your general dentist, a simple non-surgical procedure called scaling and root planning performed by an experienced periodontist may significantly reduce your chances of complications.
Medications Including Oral Contraceptives
Birth control pills may make you susceptible to oral health con-
Synthetic hormones in the oral contraceptives are designed to mimic pregnancy and may cause your gums to turn red, bleed, and swell.
Also some commonly prescribed medications such as antidepressants and certain heart medications may cause dry mouth, increased plaque build-up and enlarged gum tissue. These conditions frequently result in bacterial infections under the gum line causing bleeding gums and bad breath. Make an appoint-
ment and speak with your periodontist if you are experiencing these symptoms.
Your Changing Body During Menopause
During menopause or postmenopause, you may notice a change in the way your mouth looks or feels. You may, for example, experience discomfort including pain, burning sensations in the gums tissue, mouth sores or apthous ulcers, and altered tastes. Saliva substitutes are available from your periodontist to help
lessen the effects of a “dry” mouth that many women experience. Postmenopausal women may significantly reduce tooth loss by controlling their periodontal disease, especially if diagnosed with osteoporosis.
Diligent at-home oral hygiene, professional cleanings, and periodontal evaluations are an essential part of your overall health care.

Safe and Effective BHRT Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement
Bio-identical hormone replacement is a method of balancing and optimizing the hormonal status of men and women, offering a wide array of health benefits. This article will focus on treatment of women, though the same benefit is available to men with testosterone.
This is achieved by using plant-base hormones that are chemically and molecularly identical to the hormones that are native to the human body. It is important to draw this distinction because many of the hormones that have been studied and that (legitimately) aroused concern about the safety of hormone therapy have been hormones that are synthetic and do not necessarily belong in the human body and do not promote optimal health, or are actually hormones from other mammals such as horses.
There are various means of hormone replacement. Sub-dermal pellet therapy offers a 3-5 month supply of hormone with one brief procedure using pellets about the size of a grain of rice. This allows for use and metabolism of the hormones in a way that optimize benefits and reduce the risk of adverse effects.

TMD From a Woman’s Perspective
By Jeffrey L. Brown, DDS Sleep & TMJ Therapy
Believe it or not, most of the research out there shows that women are more prone to TMD (Temporomandibular Disorders) issues than men. There are a few theories on this that might be interesting to investigate. First of all, women are regarded as generally being more sensitive than men and even more nurturing. This
might explain why they would feel more pain or be more aware if there is a problem with the body. And being the nurturer in the family means being more aware of not only their own pain, but the pain of others. Maybe this is why the new patients that we see are mostly women.
Another factor with women experiencing more TMD is that the disease process known as EDS (Ehler Danlos
Syndrome) is far more common in women than men. In fact, the most common subtype of EDS (hEDS- hypermobile EDS) shows that 90% of the patients are women. This number is staggering. And with the more common forms of EDS, it turns out that the prevalence is roughly 70% women and only 30% men have it. Again, this is a remarkable difference that exists in a disease process that greatly affects

Jaw Pain, Clicking or Popping
Dr. Jeffrey Brown has limited his practice to focus only on TMJ Disorders, Craniofacial Pain Management and Sleep Apnea. By fixing slipped discs in the jaw joints, Dr. Brown can significantly reduce the pain patients experience in the head/neck region and other symptoms associated with jaw joint problems. Sleep & TMJ Therapy may be able to improve the quality of life for you or a loved one – we encourage you to contact us with any questions or concerns.
TMD. With EDS the ligaments and joints are all looser than they should be so the discs on top of the jaw bones (the condyles) are far more likely to slip off or become displaced. So along with joint laxity, the EDS patient has to contend with a much higher risk of developing TMD problems. According to many of the doctors who treat EDS, joint laxity is a much more common disorder (disease) than previously thought and is far more prevalent amongst our people than anyone really realizes. What this means for the TMD patient is that they have another problem to contend with potentially and a higher need for treatment exists. Maybe this is why so many people are hurting, have displaced discs, and are not all that aware of the problem? Many people show up at the doctor’s office not really sure why they are aching, have headaches, jaw pain, neck pain, or even tremors when all along it’s a TMD problem that can and should be dealt with.

“Dr. Brown and his staff are absolutely wonderful. I was diagnosed with Dystonia. I could not turn my head and had a ton of pain. My doctors offered no help and no advice besides Meds and Botox. Since having the appliance I have NO pain and I can turn my head. I would highly recommend them to anyone. I feel Dr. Brown and his staff really care about their patients and helping them to get better. They do not just numb the symptoms but fix the problem. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I feel like the old me again!”
- D. Thomas
“My daughter has been treated by Dr. Stack and Dr. Brown for the last 2 1/2 years, and we are very fortunate to have found them. Prior to that she was being treated by a neurologist at a Children’s hospital. She was on medications for tics and associated muscle pain, OCD/repetitive thoughts, sleeplessness and more (all possibly associated with Tourettes). Drs. Stack and Brown installed spacers to alleviate pressure on nerve bundles in the jaw, and subsequently braces to complete the process. Her symptoms have diminished significantly. She is off medication, her tics have all but disappeared, she can concentrate better in school, and she is once again cheerful and relaxed.” - Susan

Women also have the added problem as they age, their estrogen levels begin to drop. During menopause the lower levels of estrogen predispose the jaw joints to degenerate and this can increase alveolar bone loss. The bone loss means the structure of the jaw joint is breaking down which will mean the disc can slip off the condyle more readily and TMD issues begin to take place: headaches, neck pain, etc. Regardless of the situation, it does seem that women are more prone to TMD problems and should have a proper professional diagnose their condition and treat it before it becomes more complicated and even more painful. Seek out a doctor who treats the TMD problem on a daily basis and take charge of your life!

HRT Fights MiddleAge Weight Gain
Submitted by New Day Vitality Hormone Center
Weight gain and changes in body composition are prevalent among postmenopausal women and contribute to increasing health risks as women age. The tendency to add fat around the waist is associated with insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome and tumor growth. All are particularly dangerous.
“Weight gain and body fat distribution changes are responsible, at least in part, for the greater risk of cardiovascular disease in postmenopausal women . . . ,” says Ekta Kapoor, M.B.B.S., a consultant with the Women’s Health Clinic; General Internal Medicine; and Endocrinology, Diabetes, Metabolism, and Nutrition at Mayo Clinic.
But, according to a study in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism (May 2018), menopause hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is associated with markedly lower visceral fat, BMI and torso fat. Considering CVD is the leading cause of death among women, understanding the role of hor-
mones in these body changes are crucial. Many of the common symptoms of menopause facilitate weight gain, “including vasomotor symptoms, mood disorders, sleep disturbances and musculoskeletal complaints,” Alice Y. Chang, M.D., a consultant with Endocrinology, Diabetes, Metabolism, and Nutrition at Mayo Clinic.
Vasomotor symptoms -- hot flashes and night sweats -- are the most common complaint among women going through the menopause transition. Estrogens, the primary female sex hormone, helps maintain body temperature. When estrogen levels drop, the body responds by releasing higher amounts of other hormones that affect the brain’s thermostat. These body temperature fluctuations can wreak havoc on women.
“For example, women with severe vasomotor symptoms, especially at night, might not realize how severe fatigue compromises their ability to remain active. Women are more prone to mood disorders in the perimenopausal

A Reason To Smile Again

Dental Implant Center of Rockville
Can just four implants replace all of the teeth on the top or the bottom of your mouth? Thanks to advances in dental implant technology, that answer is a resounding yes.
Tooth loss is extremely common among adults, especially as we age. Rather than living with the discomfort and hassles of dentures, many people
are opting for what is called “all-onfour” dental implant restoration.
An implant is a small titanium screw that fits inside your jawbone and replaces the root-part of a missing tooth. Minor surgery is required to insert the implants. Once the implant is in place, a crown is attached to give you a highly realistic-looking and functional prosthetic tooth.
You do not need a dental implant for each and every one of your missing teeth. All you need is four precisely placed implants on the top of your mouth, and four on the bottom, to restore your full smile. That’s the beauty of the all-on-four. And because the implant is made of titanium, it has the unique ability to fuse to living bone and function as part of it. So eventually, the dental implant becomes part of the jawbone and serves as a strong, long-lasting foundation for your new

Why Dry Eye Is a Disease Not Just a Nuisance
By Renee Bovelle, MD Envision Eye and Laser Center
More than 40 million Americans suffer from a disease called dry eye syndrome. Computer use, CPAP machines, certain medications, diabetes, auto-immune disease, and just age can put you at risk for dry eye disease.
People with dry eyes frequently experience burning and stinging of their eyes, their eyes often feel sticky, and their eyes are often red. Some people with dry eyes also have periods
in
when their eyes get so watery that tears spill over their eyelids and run down their cheeks.
Your eyes normally make small amounts of tears all day. Tears play several important roles in keeping your eyes healthy and vision clear. Tears lubricate the eyes surface, wash away debris, provide a smooth surface to help keep your vision clear, and also contain natural antibiotics that keep your eyes safe from germs that might cause infections. Tears coat the eye in a smooth film made up of three separate layers. The layer of tears closest to the front surface of the eye is called the mucin layer. Its job is to smooth out the uneven spots on the eye surface. Next, a layer of aqueous tears covers the mucin layer. The aqueous layer is watery, and makes up the majority of the tear film. Its job is to lubricate the eye and keep it moist. The final layer of

Exploring the Benefits Of TeethXpress Implants For Dental Health
Dr. Larry Bryant
TeethXpress implants have revolutionized dental care by offering a comprehensive solution for individuals struggling with missing or failing teeth. Let’s delve into the educational aspects of TeethXpress implants, focusing on their benefits and what to expect from this innovative procedure.
Understanding TeethXpress Implants
TeethXpress implants are a modern dental solution designed to replace missing or damaged teeth with a permanent set of prosthetic teeth. Unlike traditional dentures, TeethXpress implants are securely anchored to the jawbone, providing stability and functionality comparable to natural teeth.
Immediate Results and Lasting Impact
One of the primary advantages of TeethXpress implants is the immediate results they offer. Unlike traditional dental implant procedures that may require multiple visits over an extended period, TeethXpress can often provide a complete set of new teeth in just a few hours. This quick turnaround time allows patients to swiftly regain their ability to eat, speak, and smile confidently.
Improved Dietary Habits and Quality of Life
TeethXpress implants can significantly improve dietary habits and overall quality of life for individuals struggling with compromised dental health. By providing a stable and functional bite, these implants enable patients to enjoy a wide variety of foods without restrictions. Moreover, the aesthetic enhancement provided by TeethXpress implants can boost self-confidence and contribute to a more positive self-image.

Orthotics For Your Feet
By Howard Horowitz, DPM Bowie Foot & Ankle
Orthotics are shoe inserts that are intended to correct an abnormal, or irregular, walking pattern. Orthotics are “arch supports.” They perform functions that make standing, walking, and running more comfortable and efficient, by altering slightly the angles at which the foot strikes a walking or running surface.
Podiatrists prescribe orthotics as a conservative approach to many foot problems or as a method of control after certain types of foot surgery.
Orthotics are highly successful and practical.
Orthotics take various forms and are constructed of various materials. All are concerned with improving foot function and minimizing stress forces that could ultimately cause foot deformity and pain.
Foot orthotics fall into three broad categories: those that primarily attempt to change foot function, those that are primarily protective in nature, and those that combine functional control and protection.
Rigid Orthotics
The so-called rigid orthotic device, designed to control function, may be made of a firm material such as plastic or carbon fiber, and is used primarily for walking or dress shoes. Rigid orthotics are chiefly designed to control motion in two major foot joints, which lie directly below the ankle joint. These devices are long lasting, do not change shape, and are usually difficult to break.
As the sun shines brighter and outdoor activities beckon, prioritizing your fluid intake becomes paramount. Adequate hydration can have a profound impact on your overall wellbeing, weight management, and even enhance your athletic performance. But how much water is enough, you might wonder? While most individuals should aim to consume
a gallon of water daily, those residing in warmer climates or engaging in frequent physical activity should increase their intake. A great way to start is by substituting all other beverages with water. Additionally, keeping a bottle of water in your car and having one readily available at your desk can make achieving this goal effortlessly attainable.

Obesity and Your Health
By Etwar McBean, MD, FACS
The Bariatric & Hernia Institute, PC
Obesity gives rise to numerous difficulties long before serious health conditions arise. Typically, obese individuals experience fatigue and shortness of breath when walking long distances or climbing stairs. They often suffer from lower back and knee joint pain, limiting their physical activity. Sleep disturbances, characterized by snoring and frequent awakenings at night, are common precursors to more severe ailments.
In addition, many people struggling with weight issues avoid social events and activities they once enjoyed, which can contribute to varying degrees of depression. Subsequently, well-known major health conditions arise, such as sleep apnea, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease, and arthritis, among others. These conditions often necessitate long-term treatment with multiple medications, leading to a decline in overall health and quality of life, coupled with the high costs of ongoing medical care.
Various options for weight loss exist, including diets, exercise programs, medications, and weight loss surgery. However, the effectiveness of each of these approaches depends on daily healthy lifestyle choices and varies depending on the amount of weight loss required.
Weight loss surgery is typically suitable for individuals who are 80100 pounds overweight and are unPlease see “Obesity,” page 63

Have You Lost a Loved One?
By James A. Cleaver, Esq. Alexander & Cleaver
Know what must be done under Maryland law to manage his or her assets after death.
Losing loved ones presents a deeply emotional time. Life will never be the same, and we all must cope with it at some point in our lives. Many believe when we finally lay our loved ones to rest, we can simply go into their home and take the items we want and split whatever money is left in their bank accounts. This is simply not the case. In most instances, no prop-
erty can be obtained from a deceased person without going through a formal estate administration process - even if the person who died left a Will.
Estate administration in Maryland refers to the legal process of conducting and distributing a deceased person’s assets and bills. The process typically involves identifying and appraising the decedent’s assets, paying off any legally enforceable debts and taxes owed, and distributing the remaining assets to the beneficiaries named in the decedent’s will (legatees) or as determined by Maryland law (heirs).
In Maryland, estate administration is typically supervised by the Register of Wills in the county where the decedent lived at the time of their death. The Register of Wills is the clerk to the Orphans’ Court (probate court) in their respective county. The Register of Wills is responsible for probating the decedent’s Will, appointing a personal representative to manage the estate, and overseeing the distribution of assets outlined in the decedent’s Will if they had one, or state

Shirin-yoku Forest Bathing and Fertility
By Yemi Adesanya-Famuyiwa, MD Montgomery Fertility Center
Being in nature can be salubrious to your health. Nature is calming and restorative.
There is some physiology behind this phenomenon. The Japanese have long practiced the art of tree bathing or forest bathing. Walking through the woods for as little as 10 to 20 minutes can be extremely restorative.
Trees themselves release oxygen and soak up carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. We all know this and that’s why we encourage indoor plants. In addition to the oxygen being released
are chemicals called phytoncides. It turns out trees release organic compounds called phytoncides. These chemicals help plants defend themselves against microbial infections, such as from bacteria or fungi, and protect them from invasion from certain insects.
The Japanese art of tree bathing enfolds you in the phytoncides released. These chemicals are also known to improve your immune system by increasing your natural killer cells activity.
Natural killer cells can marshal your body’s immune defenses against viruses and germs and protect you from even tumor formation. There is data that suggests that your increased natural killer activity after a trip to the forest can last for as much as 30 days.
In addition, these chemicals can help you fight off tumor invasion. They have anti-cancer proteins; they also help to lower your blood pressure and heart rate as well as stress hormones. They help to reduce anxiety as well as depression.
Tree bathing can decrease your stress levels which may help you in your fertility journey.
Encouraging a Love Of Reading
By Janet V. Johnson, MD Loving Care Pediatrics
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) suggests limiting a child’s screen time, including TV, movies, video games, and computer games, to one or two hours per day. It is also advisable to encourage your child to engage in reading activities.
Looking to foster a love for reading? Control screen time, start early, read books aloud together, visit the library, and set a positive example. These are the best recommendations, but here are a few creative ideas and quick tips
to inspire both new and seasoned readers. During the summer, encourage your child to read at least four books for fun, which can help improve their reading speed and comprehension.
Capture Their Interest In the Story
Begin by reading aloud together to capture their interest in the story. For long car trips, play audio recordings of books.
Spark their curiosity by reading aloud something you think they might find interesting, and then share an intriguing tidbit that would entice them to read with curiosity and delight.
Make It Social and Fun
For children who are just learning to read, have them read aloud to a pet, stuffed animal, or younger siblings who are not yet mobile.
Attraction
Turn reading aloud into a game and have everyone, including children, guess what will happen next.
Use
Books As Treats
Make reading a reward and let kids

What Is Lipedema?
By Kaitlyn Berry Magothy Therapy & Wellness
Lipedema is often misdiagnosed as obesity or Lymphedema. Lipedema is actually a chronic condition that is symmetrical but disproportionate build up of nodular and fibrotic fat in the legs, hips, buttocks, and sometimes arms (30%). However, the hands and feet are NOT affected, giving a cuffing presentation at those points. It is characterized by fibrotic loose connective tissue and it typically occurs, almost exclusively, in women (11%). The onset is most commonly around times of hormonal changes like puberty, pregnancy, and menopause. The exact causes of lipedema are not known, but main factors may include hormones, genetics, inflammation, metabolism,
and abnormalities within the lymphatic system. Lipedema can worsen in the advanced stages and can place someone at increased risk for lipolymphedema (Lymphedema induced by Lipedema).
Characteristics Of Lipedema:
• Change in skin texture (it can look and feel lumpy)
• Inflammation
• Joint & mobility issues
• Skin hypothermia
• Pain
• Easy bruising
• Fatigue
• Diet resistant fat
The severity of these symptoms can range from none to severe and they can be constant or come and go.
Stages Of Lipedema
Stage 1: Generally smooth and even skin surface with enlarged fat tissue, and swelling that can come and go
Stage 2: Uneven skin pattern with indentations and dimpling in the skin, and development of lipomas (a fatty lump of tissue under the skin)
Stage 3: Large adipose tissue growths causing deformity of the thighs and around the knees

wear a hat when outdoors for extended periods. This simple step
can prevent dryness, color fading, and brittleness caused by sun exposure.
Hydrate Regularly: Hydration is key to maintaining hair health yearround, but it’s especially crucial in summer. Use a hydrating conditioner after each shampoo to replenish moisture lost from heat and sun exposure. Consider a deep conditioning treatment once a week to nourish and strengthen your hair.
Avoid Overwashing: While it’s tempting to wash sweaty hair frequently during summer, overwashing can strip natural oils and lead to dryness. Opt for a gentle shampoo and limit washing to every other day or as needed. Dry shampoo can be a handy alternative to absorb excess oil without stripping moisture.
Choose the Right Products: Use hair care products specifically formulated for your hair type and concerns. Lightweight, hydrating formulas are ideal for summer, as they won’t weigh down your

A glow as bright as gold. Sound bathing is an intentional act where you absorb the sounds around you from Tibetan bowls, rain sticks, tuning forks, and other natural-sounding instruments.
Sound bathing is an aid for your health and well-being. It goes beyond hearing and listening; it is becoming one with the sound. Sound frequency engages the mind, body, and spirit, aiding in healing and happiness. Happiness is healing, and focusing on happy thoughts and mindful concepts enhances this effect.
Sound bathing is centuries old. It is a form of meditation where you meditate on the experience, waves, vibrations, and frequency.
Sound Bathing
Sound bathing is a spiritual cleansing; it is an awareness. It’s like a wash, a bath with instruments. It has a cleansing sound. Sound bathing creates change and brings about a balance of energy. It has no melody or hook, allowing the brain to release thoughts, emotions, and feelings. These sounds resonate within the seven main centers in the body called chakras. When the sound penetrates each chakra center, either together or separately, it brings about a clearing that creates harmony. It removes discordance from your energy field.
Yoga and acupuncture also help to open energy blocks. However, the sound bath relaxes and brings about physical and emotional healing. Sound therapy has its roots in science, based on the principles of quantum physics and sacred geometry. Western medicine also uses sound waves daily in the form of ultrasound. In some cases, ultrasound is used to break up kidney stones and other things in the body.
Sound bathing resonates with the different organs of the body’s emotions, illnesses, diseases, and trauma.
It is comforting, meditative, and relaxing, and you’re usually lying down, listening to soothing, echoing sounds from the Tibetan bowls. The sound from the bowls is known to relieve stress, anxiety, depression, and pain. Soaking in sound helps you to create the healing your body needs. Sound is music therapy.
It has a way of relaxing you, enabling you to float into the pureness within yourself. It is an experience where you are immersed in the deep sound of vibrations that penetrate the energy centers.
Sound bathing releases stuckness from the seven main chakras and sub-chakras according to the flow of energy in your body.
Sound baths are for everyone, at any stage of your life. Sound baths are very beneficial for pregnancy, prehab, rehab, old and young people, and people experiencing diseases, illnesses, and trauma.
Sound baths can also help you connect to your inner self. With sound bathing, it’s easier to relax, especially if you have difficulties relaxing in
meditation. It helps you to control your excessive thinking, making it easier for you to let go and let the sound in. The different frequencies of sound create personal therapy, thereby creating a game-changer for the individual.
To Experience a Sound Bath
You can come to Happy Hour Yoga every 3rd Wednesday of the month, where the lights are dim and aroma fills the room, creating a very comfortable and safe place. The temperature for your bath is perfect for you.
How To Prepare
For your bath, it is advised that you make a commitment to show up. Wear comfortable clothing—you can sit or lie down, whichever makes you comfortable. Invite a friend to share your experience with.
In sound bathing, simply become one with the sound. Let go of the thinking. The temperature is right for your body. Lie on your back and soak in the vibrations and frequency so that the mind and body can relax and heal.

Minimally Invasive Foot Surgery
Permanent Cure For Bunions, Hammertoes
and Calluses
By Burton J. Katzen, DPM Metro Minimally Invasive Surgical Foot Care Centers
You only get one pair to last a lifetime, and most people will clock over 70,000 miles on a pair of feet in a 70 year life span. Mechanically, the feet are one of the most complex parts of the body. There are 26 bones, 30 joints, 19 muscles, and 107 ligaments in each foot. These structures
work together to allow the foot to move in six different directions to produce each complete step.
It has been estimated that 8085% of the general population will suffer from a foot problem at some time in their life. In the past, many foot pain sufferers have avoided permanent cures, opting for periodic palliative care. In the long run, for the active person in pain, this may not be the treatment of choice. These visits
may be time consuming, expensive, and will not permanently cure a problem that may worsen.
How Minimally Invasive Surgery Differs From Traditional Foot Surgery
Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) is a technique which enables a specially trained and certified surgeon to eliminate most bunions, hammertoes, corns, calluses, and spurs through a small incision often

requiring only one stitch, so no big scars. The procedures are performed with small specialized instruments with a diameter about the same size as a pen point. The boney structures are viewed during surgery by use of a Flouroscope, so even though the incision is small, the surgeon can visualize the structures he/she is working on at all times during the surgery.
Unlike other surgeries, major factors associated with MIS are different. There is no hospitalization or deep general anesthesia required. The surgery is performed in a certified Ambulatory Surgical Center under local anesthesia with IV sedation administered by an anesthesiologist or a certified nurse anesthetist, so the patient will experience no pain before or during the surgery. Following the surgery, the patient will leave walking, be instructed to go directly home and remain off the foot other than ambulating to the bathroom for 24/48 hours. The recovery time, and post-operative pain, swelling, and risk of infection is usually diminished with MIS due to the small incision, less exposure time, and lessor amount of soft tissue dissection and trauma to the structures. With some procedures, patients are often able to return to sedentary jobs in 23 days.
Etiology The most common cause of bunion deformities is believed to be a combination of hereditary tendencies and biomechanical imbalances. For example, excessive pronation, commonly referred to as flat-feet, places excessive stress on the inside of the big toe during toe-off forcing it into a valgus direction toward the smaller toes. As the bunion develops, the head of the metatarsal bone enlarges, becomes more prominent, and is irritated by the shoe. This can be demonstrated with the hand by holding the palm flat against a table and slowly bending the hand and watching the knuckles become more prominent.
Treatment The first choice in the treatment of bunion deformities is to discover them early in life so a conservative, mechanical approach may be used. This may include orthotics or a minimally invasive flatfoot correction, which will be discussed in a later issue. However, once the great toe is deviated and the metatarsal bone becomes prominent enough to be symptomatic in shoes, the only permanent cure is surgical correction, which in the majority of the cases can be done through the minimally invasive technique.

Medical Cannabis Adult Use
Sharron Sample, CEO of Dispensary Works in White Plains, MD, retired from the position of Chief Information Office, Earth Science, NASA in 2008 after a long and rewarding career. She never envisioned the legalization of cannabis for medicine and that she might play a role in making it available to others.
In 2014, son, Robert and nephew, Steve, made Sharron aware of the plans for legalization and began to educate her on the science of cannabis as medicine. She was particularly impressed with the ways it was helping to reduce or eliminate seizures in children and adults. Together, they opened Dispensary Works on May 10, 2018, and have found it to be one of the most gratifying accomplishments of their careers.
“We are committed to providing the best cannabis product to patients as part of their overall health plan, ensuring their needs continue to be met as we enter into the adult-use market on July 1, 2023."
Native to Maryland, Sharron, Rob, and Steve continue to be "greatly rewarded by patient reports of improved relief for medical conditions, from minor improvements to life-changing transformations."
Since the legalization of cannabis for adult-use on July 1, 2023, anyone over 21 may buy cannabis. Dispensary Works continues to give priority treatment to medical patients, by moving them up in the queue for shorter wait times. Medical customers continue to buy tax free.

Veterinarian
Since age 5, my passion for veterinary care has guided me. At 14, I embarked on my journey, working in veterinary clinics. Graduating from The Ohio State University with a DVM degree in 1977, I've devoted my life to caring for both pets and their families. After a decade in clinical practice, I sought new avenues due to concerns about pets' health. In 1988, I delved into veterinary acupuncture, earning certification from the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society. This led me into holistic medicine, where I gained certification in homeopathy and underwent training with Dr. Richard Pitcairn. In 1993, I sold my practice in Maryland and pursued spirituality in Sedona, AZ, becoming a Tibetan Buddhist nun until 2023. Embracing the belief in the equality of all life, I dedicated myself to alleviating suffering. Returning to Maryland in 2006, I co-founded Holistic Veterinary Healing in 2013. Recognizing the interconnectedness of human and animal health, I pursued a Master's degree in Human Acupuncture in 2010. Since 2016, I've focused solely on animal patients, certified in Medical Ozone Therapy and as a Fear Free Practitioner. Residing in Germantown with my dogs, I cherish moments with family and friends, enjoy farm visits, and find solace in meditation and watching my dogs.

Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor
Lauren K. Lambie is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor and Art Therapist in Maryland, and a Board-Certified Art Therapist. She provides therapy services for individuals and families in the DMV area and leads groups on treatment issues and social skills development. Lauren has always valued imagery and the creative process, inspired by a third-grade teacher who encouraged her artistic expression. She transitioned from a career as a costume designer to an expressive arts therapist in 1996. Lauren uses art therapy, play therapy, EMDR, and verbal techniques in her integrative approach.
Before moving to Maryland in 2001, she practiced in Arizona, specializing in working with children and families, and coordinated the Graham County Child Abuse Task Force. Lauren has extensive experience with at-risk youth, survivors of abuse, juvenile offenders, and clients with Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADHD, mood/anxiety disorders, and addictions. She is also trained as a divorce and family mediator.
In therapy with me, expect a blend of warmth, authenticity, and laughter as foundational elements. Establishing a secure, trusting relationship is my priority, seeing healing emerge through connection. Embracing Dolly Parton’s insight that “laughter through tears is my favorite emotion,” I avoid taking myself too seriously, recognizing that defensiveness hinders growth – a lesson learned through experience and parenting.
Raised by a resilient single mother, I inherited values of strength, perseverance, and compassion. These principles not only shape my therapeutic practice but also form the core of our Betty Center’s ethos. My unique journey from journalism to social work after raising my children led me to obtain my Masters in Social Work at 47. My personality encompasses contrasts—I relish yoga, loud concerts, and the outdoors as much as quiet moments with family, books, and cozy cups of tea. I’m a devoted reader, a passionate Washington football fan, and an adept cook (but not a baker!). Additionally, I indulge in true crime podcasts and Dateline/48 Hours, though that’s our little secret.
In therapy, I specialize in aiding individuals navigating transitions: divorce, empty-nesting, and other major life changes. My expertise lies in addressing anxiety, depression, ADHD, trauma, and relational challenges, employing diverse evidence-based methods tailored to each client’s needs. I believe in a personalized approach, fostering a secure therapeutic relationship where you feel truly heard and understood.
Education: I hold an MSW from the University of Maryland (2017) and a BA in Communications with a Women’s Studies Minor from the University of Delaware, graduating Magna Cum Laude in 1992.

Family dentistry has been a way of life for me, and the passion for caring for children is in my genes. My mother, Dr. Lynda Dean-Duru, also a pediatric dentist, was my first inspiration towards family dentistry. Having started my journey in family care working as a pediatric dental assistant at Ashburn Children’s Dentistry, I spent many summers as my mother’s mentee. Watching what seemed like magical healing art she deployed while treating her patients and knowing the need and the power of proactive preventive dental health for children, I chose a career specializing in pediatric dentistry.
It is an honor to join my mother in practice at Ashburn Children’s Dentistry where I get to fulfill my commitment to helping each child and parent have a positive and transformative dental experience, with compassion and fun! Having matured as an integrative laser pediatric dental surgeon and absorbing the ethos of Ashburn Children’s Dentistry, I work tirelessly to stay abreast of emerging research, and improve the quality of life for children by learning from the world’s leading researchers and clinicians. Through these means, we are continually integrating critical aspects of oral structure, craniofacial development, and its impact on the pediatric airway in the service of providing optimal patient outcomes. Caring for children is so powerful and rewarding and with that, understanding the importance of utilizing gentle and minimal intervention therapies. Treating the source of their issues—instead of the symptoms—and focusing on early prevention, has been critical to my role in educating parents and assisting their blossoming child’s development into a healthy and resilient adult.
I hold an undergraduate degree from Columbia University in New York, where I studied Psychology. I received a Doctorate of Dental Surgery from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA and completed my Pediatric Residency at Interfaith Department of Dental Medicine in Brooklyn, NY, where I served in a leadership role as Chief Resident. Board Certified, I am a proud Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.
When not helping my young patients build happy smiles, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, growing in my faith, improving my dancing skills, learning boxing moves, traveling — and cheering on Washington sports teams!
“Dr. Krystle,” as she is known by her patients, is thrilled to join her mom, Dr. Lynda, in practice. Patients and parents compliment her fun, compassionate approach. They are also impressed by her commitment to helping each child and parent have a positive dental experience. Having matured as a dental surgeon, she is constantly working to enhance her capabilities in the field.

Taking Care Of Your
Newborn Physicals In the Comfort Of Your Home
By Lisa Boynes Sindass, MD Trusted Medical MD
Welcoming a newborn into the world is a momentous occasion, and as new parents, your baby’s health and well-being are of utmost importance. Ensuring that your little one receives appropriate healthcare is crucial for their growth and development. One way to do this is through newborn baby physicals, which can now be conducted in the comfort of your own home.
Newborn baby physicals are an essential part of your baby’s healthcare routine. These exams help pe-
diatricians assess your baby’s overall health and development. During these visits, your baby will undergo a full physical examination, including checks for weight, length, and head circumference. The healthcare provider will also measure vital signs such as heart rate and respiratory rate, which can provide valuable insights into your baby’s well-being.
Metabolic screening tests may be administered depending on your state’s guidelines. These tests are vital in detecting rare but serious metabolic disorders that can affect your baby’s health if not addressed early.
Newborn baby physicals may also include the administration of the EPDS (Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale) to assess the birth parent’s emotional well-being, as postpartum depression is a common concern.
Home-based pediatric wellness services also offer access to data via secure patient portals and telehealth visits, which can be invaluable for

By Dr. Anver Khan Chesapeake Spine & Pain
Chronic pain, a persistent condition lasting beyond the usual course of acute illness or injury, can significantly impair quality of life and function. For patients whose pain is refractory to conventional treatments, spinal cord stimulation (SCS) offers a promising and effective therapeutic option.
Spinal cord stimulation is a minimally invasive procedure that involves implanting a small device, similar to a pacemaker, which delivers electrical impulses to the spinal cord. These impulses modulate pain signals before they reach the brain, effectively reduc-
ing the perception of pain. SCS has been used for decades and is supported by robust clinical evidence for its efficacy in managing various chronic pain conditions, including failed back surgery syndrome (FBSS), complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), and peripheral neuropathy.
One of the primary benefits of SCS is its ability to provide significant and sustained pain relief. Many patients report a reduction in pain intensity by 50% or more, allowing them to engage in daily activities with greater ease and enjoyment. Unlike oral medications that often come with side effects such as drowsiness, gastrointestinal issues, and potential for dependence, SCS offers pain relief without systemic side effects. This can be particularly advantageous for patients who have experienced adverse reactions or limited effectiveness with pharmacological therapies.
Moreover, SCS is customizable to each patient’s specific pain pattern and intensity. The device can be pro-

Free Yourself From Heartburn
Submitted by Kensington Pharmacy
Heartburn occurs when stomach acid flows in the opposite direction, moving upward into the esophagus. This backward movement is known as reflux. You don’t have to suffer silently. Consult your pharmacist regarding heartburn and inquire about lifestyle changes, as well as prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) medications that can provide relief.
To determine if you have heartburn or a more serious condition, consider the following questions:
• Do you experience warmth or pain at your breastbone after meals?
• Do you sometimes taste acid at the back of your throat?
• Have you ever felt that food is regurgitating into your mouth?
• Do these sensations intensify when you lie down?
• Do antacids or OTC acid blockers alleviate these symptoms?
If you answered yes to any or all
of these questions, it indicates that you have heartburn.
Is your heartburn severe? Do you experience it two or more times per week? Has it persisted for several months? Despite regularly taking medications, does it continue to reoccur? If you answered yes to these questions, you may have a more serious problem.
Let’s debunk three common myths about heartburn:
Myth #1: Heartburn is insignificant.
Fact: Heartburn can significantly impact your daily activities and their execution.
Myth #2: Heartburn is your fault.
Fact: You didn’t cause it, but you can reduce its pain and inconvenience.
Myth #3: Heartburn is not a serious medical issue.
Fact: Heartburn can progress and lead to more severe problems, such as inflammation, ulcers in the esophagus, and changes in esophageal lining cells.

STRESS
Don’t Deny Your Loved One Comfort Because Of These Morphine Myths
By Elisabeth G. Smith, MS, BSN RN, CHPN, Director of Education and Emergency Management Hospice
of the Chesapeake
In a previous article, we addressed two myths about morphine. Many people harbor these myths when they or a loved one become a hospice patient. Hospice professionals know morphine brings comfort to people who are in
pain or having trouble breathing. With a focus on quality of care that meets the goals and needs of each unique patient, we seek to use every tool available, including morphine. That’s why we work every day to dispel these myths. Here are three more.
Myth: I can get addicted to morphine
Fact: Any opioid has the potential to be abused. Any abused drug can cause an addiction. However, for hospice patients using morphine under medical supervision, addiction is very unlikely. In my 16 years as a hospice professional, I have never seen addiction from people taking morphine appropriately.
Myth: If I take morphine early in the treatment of my disease, it won’t work when I really need it.
Fact: Many people think you should save morphine until the pain is at its worst. That is contrary to good symptom management practices. Let’s compare the symptoms your loved one experiences to a fire. There is a better chance of managing the fire when it is small and contained. You don’t want to wait until it is raging out of control. If you wait for the pain to become excruciating, you will have to use more morphine and it will take longer to bring relief.
Baseline discomfort is like a smoldering coal. Long-acting morphine dosed two to three times a day will suppress the smoldering coals. Occasionally, the smoldering coals will flare up. We call this breakthrough discomfort. That’s when we dose with the rapid acting medication. We want to get on top of that fire before it begins to rage.
Myth: Hospice doctors will push morphine on me.
Fact: Hospice care is patientcentered. Our team is going to assess any barriers to morphine. We make a plan that includes goals of care to ensure all that we do is understood and approved by the patient and family. We understand that some people have challenges with morphine that can include allergies, experiencing

Chinese Medicine For Chronic Low Back Pain
By Quansheng Lu, CMD, PhD, LAc Wholelife Chinese Medicine & Acupuncture Center
What Does Lower Back Pain Entail?
Approximately 80% of adults in the United States experience lower back pain at some stage in their lives. Acute back pain typically lasts from a few days to a few weeks, while chronic back pain can persist for over three months. Various factors can cause lower back pain, with muscle strain
and degenerative disc disease being the most common culprits.
In accordance with traditional Chinese medicine theory, external factors like extreme weather, injury, and excessive sexual activity can lead to a blockage of Qi and blood. This blockage is believed to manifest as low back pain when it occurs in the lower back. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) encompasses various modalities, including Chinese herbal medicine, acupuncture, moxibustion, cupping, scrapping, tui-na, qi-gong, and exercises. Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine are the primary components of TCM.
Can Acupuncture Effectively Alleviate Lower Back Pain?

Understanding Fibroids, Abnormal Bleeding, and Endometriosis
Key Issues In Women’s Health
By Ashley Pimperl MSN, CRNP, FNP-C Oasis Advanced GYN Surgery
Women’s reproductive health is a complex field, with conditions like fibroids, abnormal bleeding, and endometriosis affecting many women globally. Understanding these conditions is crucial for early diagnosis, ef-
fective management, and maintaining overall well-being.
Fibroids
Fibroids, also known as uterine leiomyomas or myomas, are non-cancerous growths that develop in or on the uterus. They vary in size and number, and while some women may be asymptomatic, others experience significant symptoms. Common symptoms include heavy menstrual bleeding, prolonged periods, pelvic pain, frequent urination, and complications during pregnancy. The exact cause of fibroids is unknown, but factors such as genetics, hormones (particularly estrogen and progesterone), and lifestyle can influence their development. Treatment options range from watchful

Lyme Disease How Do I Limit My Exposure to Ticks?
By Thomas K. Lo, DC Advanced Chiropractic Center
Tick exposure can occur yearround, but ticks are most active during warmer months (April-September).
Reducing exposure to ticks is the best defense against Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and other tick-borne infections. You and
your family can take several steps to prevent and control Lyme disease.
Before you go outdoors know where to expect ticks. Ticks live in grassy, brushy, or wooded areas, or even on animals. Spending time outside walking your dog, camping, gardening, or hunting could bring you in close contact with ticks.
Treat clothing and gear with products containing 0.5% permethrin. Permethrin is used to treat boots, clothing and camping gear and remain protective through several washings. There are many insect repellents, some natural, which can help you combat your exposure to ticks.
Try to avoid contact with ticks by staying away from brushy areas with high grass and leaf litter and stay on well-groomed trails when walking or Please see “Lyme Disease,” page 66
The Ultimate Healing Restoring Body, Mind & Spirit
By Sabrina Milanovich Psychic Meditation Center
Energy Quantum Healing
Energy quantum healing operates on the principle that the body’s innate energy field extends beyond its physical boundaries, connecting with the Earth’s magnetic field and traversing various dimensions within the spiritual realm.
This method focuses on identifying and rectifying congested negative energy, facilitating the restoration of a harmonious flow of positive energy throughout the entire human energy system. By addressing imbalances and disturbances within this system, energy quantum healing aims to integrate the body, mind, and soul in order to foster holistic health and facilitating the healing process. Practitioners believe that resolving energy field disturbances can prevent potential physical manifestations of illness in the future.
Holistic Therapies
Meditation, sound immersion, aura, chakra balancing and healing exert a tangible impact on the body, constituting a form of vibrational medicine that may influence heart
rate, blood pressure, and brain wave patterns. Sound waves, in particular, emit vibrations that are thought to penetrate and interact with the physical body and its major systems, accessing the aura and chakra systems to alleviate spiritual blockages and alleviate tension and stress. Sessions incorporating meditation, sound immersion, and healing techniques have been shown to alleviate physical discomfort in certain individuals, as well as mitigate anxiety and depression, and address emotional imbalances and past traumas.
Keep in mind that these therapies are complementary and should be used in conjunction with conventional medical care.

Intense Feeling Of Anxiety
By Joyce Abramson, RNMS Charles County Freedom Landing
Everyone experiences anxiety or stress during their lives. Some anxiety is actually helpful. It moves us to action. It can make us study more for an exam or intensify practice prior to an important presentation.
If you have an anxiety disorder, this normally helpful emotion can do just the opposite. It can prevent coping and disrupt lives.
Anxiety disorders are not just a bunch of nerves. They are illnesses, often related to the biological makeup and life experiences of the person. The disorder appears to run in families. There are several types of anxiety disorders each with its own features.
Generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, phobias related to anxi-
ety, and obsessive compulsive disorder are the most prevalent anxiety disorders documented by the National Institute of Mental Health. It appears with recent research that the anxiety may occur due to the increased sensitivity in a part of the brain called the locus ceruleus.
Many people misunderstand these illnesses and think that they can be overcome by sheer willpower. Wishing away the symptoms would be great but does not work. There are treatments that can help. Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is much more than the normal day-to-day stress we usually experience. It is chronic, exaggerated tension with no obvious reason creating such an intense response.
Experiencing GAD means anticipating the worst, often worrying excessively about health, money, family, or work. Individuals with GAD cannot relax, or shake the sense of constant worry even when they realize it is unwarranted.
Often, there is difficulty sleeping and physical symptoms develop. Trembling, muscle tension, irritability, headaches, sweating, nausea or feeling out of breath can be associated with the disorder.
Usually impairment related to GAD is mild in comparison to the other

Corns and Calluses
By Ademuyiwa Adetunji, DPM
Largo Foot & Ankle Health
Part 1
A corn is a type of callus that forms as a protective thickening of the skin on a bony and knobby part of a toe. In the center of a corn, there is often a dense knot of skin known as a core. This core is located over the area that experiences the most friction or pressure and can exert pressure on a nerve, causing sharp pain. Hard corns are firm and dry, developing on the upper surfaces of the toes. Soft corns, on the other hand, are pliable and moist, forming between the toes. Corns usually develop when the foot is squeezed into
narrow-toed shoes. They can also occur on deformed toes that cannot fit comfortably in regular shoes.
Symptoms
Small corns or calluses on the feet may not cause any symptoms. However, large and bulky corns or calluses can lead to foot pain and difficulty walking. Prolonged irritation can result in discoloration (brown, red, or black) beneath a large corn or callus. This discoloration arises from slight bleeding in the space between the thickened and normal skin. In severe cases, the thickened and normal skin may separate, exposing the area to potential infection, especially in individuals with diabetes.
Diagnosis
Your podiatrist or doctor will inquire about your footwear, as narrow-toed shoes are more likely to cause corns. They will also ask about your foot history, medical conditions (including diabetes and circulation problems), and any previous foot surgeries or injuries. Certain foot problems can affect foot mechanics, leading to abnormal pressure in specific areas and resulting in calluses.

Emotions That Lesson Heart Disease Risks In Women
By Linda Penkala, Author, LMT Speaker
Shedding light on the impact that emotions have on women’s heart health becomes more valuable as we age. Understanding this link between emotions in a positive way can lessen CVD risk factors, as 70-90% of all illness and disease is stress related, states the American Medical Association. Not surprisingly, much of the emotional stress women are feeling, especially post pandemic, is relational, not just
workplace related. Since we can be more relational than men, we may have an increased propensity toward negative emotions impacting heart health.
Locally, in Maryland, Dr. Erin Michos, director of Women’s Cardiovascular Health at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore simply says: “Mood can influence your health.” Research reveals that negative emotions of hostility, anger and pessimism are linked to rising heart disease risks, while lessening the ability to heal from a heart attack.
Chronic stress has its physiological manifestations in the body/mind by way of depression, anxiety, fear, pain and impaired mental health. The body’s “wired in” 911 call for help via the sympathetic nervous system during stress’s fightflight-fear loop, at times may be stuck at sounding the bell constantly with a

More Than Just a Cleaning
Submitted by E. Taylor Meiser, DDS Lighthouse Family Dentistry
A significant portion of individuals who visit the dentist simply want their teeth cleaned. However, many people are unaware that while clean teeth typically indicate good oral health, what occurs beneath the gumline is equally, if not more, important than what is visible.
Periodontal disease, formerly known as pyorrhea in its advanced stages, affects over 75% of the U.S. population in some form. It is highly likely that you have areas of gum
disease in your mouth. How can you determine this? Schedule an appointment with your family dentist.
Periodontal disease manifests in various forms and stages, ranging from reversible gingivitis (characterized by bleeding gums) to advanced generalized periodontitis (involving pus, bone loss, and loose teeth). A crucial aspect to note about periodontal disease is its progressive nature. It starts as a mild condition and worsens over time unless recognized and treated.
Regular dental checkups and cleanings can prevent or halt the progression of periodontal disease. Your family dentist can effectively treat early-stage periodontal disease. If more severe areas of disease are detected, a referral to a periodontist (a gum specialist) will be recommended. Ignoring periodontal disease is not advisable, as it does not resolve on its own and only worsens over time. It is also essential not to underestimate the significance of periodontal disease. Recent studies have established strong

the appliance secure.
Overdentures improve stability and functionality to 60% compared to natural teeth, they are relatively inexpensive, and easy to clean.
Some people find them uncomfortable, and they may cause sore spots on gum tissue. Although they are fairly stable they may still move when chewing or speaking, and may require relines to improve fit and comfort as bone in the jaw deteriorates.
All-On-4 Implant Fixed Bridge
Bridges are permanent restorations attached onto teeth or implants, supporting false crowns in the areas of missing teeth. The biggest difference between an All-On-4 appliance and an overdenture is that the All-On-4 appliance is permanent – you never have to
While some women do very well in menopause with just a few symptoms, the majority have a very difficult time with it. Common symptoms (which can be alleviated by pellet therapy) include hot flashes, night sweats, sleep disturbances, brain fog and mood issues, weight gain, joint pain, absence of libido, osteoporosis, vaginal dryness and hair loss.
While testosterone is generally thought of as a male hormone, prior to menopause women actually produce more testosterone than estrogen. Utilizing both testosterone and estradiol as pellets along with oral progesterone allows for improvement in sleep, decrease in hot flashes and night sweats, heightened libido and sexual pleasure, and a greater sense of well being. Judicious use of hormones greatly improves
orthotics
Strains, aches, and pains in the legs, thighs, and lower back may be due to abnormal function of the foot, or a slight difference in the length of the legs. In such cases, orthotics may improve or eliminate these symptoms, which may seem only remotely connected to foot function.
Soft Orthotics
Soft-orthotic devices help to absorb shock, increase balance, and take pressure off uncomfortable or sore spots. They are usually constructed of soft, compressible materials.
The advantage of any soft orthotic device is that it may be easily adjusted to changing weight-bearing forces. The disadvantage is that it
take it out, and it improves functionality to 90% compared to natural teeth versus 60%. Other benefits are that this appliance eliminates the need for bone grafting: your dentist can provide a temporary bridge the same day of your surgery; it preserves bone and soft tissue; they never decay (95% success rate over 30 years); they are very natural looking, allowing you to eat the foods you want; and you are able to clean fixed bridges like natural teeth – inside your mouth.

Traditional fixed bridges replace root and teeth, preserve bone and soft tissue, improve functionality to 90% compared to natural teeth, and you can also clean them as you would natural teeth – inside the mouth.
cardiovascular health, cognitive function, and bone health. The doses of the hormones are customized to each individual patient based on their labs, health history and other metrics.
The most common concern about this type of therapy is regarding cancer and blood clots. This type of therapy does not increase the risk of breast cancer and actually may decrease the risk of invasive breast cancer, and unlike in oral hormone therapy there is zero increase in risk of blood clots.
The choice to utilize the option of hormone therapy is an individual one and should be reviewed with a physician that is experienced and that you trust. Using the lowest effective dose can make an enormous difference in one’s health.

grammed to deliver different patterns of electrical stimulation, and patients can adjust the settings using a handheld controller to optimize their pain relief throughout the day. This level of personalized pain management can lead to better overall outcomes and improved patient satisfaction.
Another significant advantage of SCS is its reversibility. If a patient does not experience adequate pain relief or encounters any complications, the system can be removed or turned off without permanent alterations to the spine. This makes SCS a flexible and low-risk option compared to more invasive surgical interventions.
In addition to pain relief, SCS has been shown to improve functional outcomes and quality of life. Patients often experience enhanced mobility, better sleep, and reduced reliance on pain medications, leading to an overall improvement in daily functioning and mental well-being. This holistic

the tear film is an oily layer called the lipid layer. This is the outermost layer, and its job is to cover the aqueous layer and prevent it from evaporating. Each layer of the tear film is made by a different part of the eye.
The mucin layer is made by the eye surface itself. The aqueous layer is made by a tear gland tucked under the upper eyelid. And the lipid layer is made by small glands in the eyelids. For the tear film to do its job, all three layers have to be in their proper places in the correct amounts, like a recipe.
benefit can be life-changing, enabling patients to regain independence and participate more fully in personal and social activities.
The procedure for implanting the SCS device is typically done on an outpatient basis, involving a trial period where a temporary device is placed to assess its effectiveness. If successful, a permanent device is implanted. This trial phase helps ensure that only patients likely to benefit from the therapy proceed to the permanent implant, enhancing the success rates and patient satisfaction.
Spinal cord stimulation offers a powerful and versatile solution for managing chronic pain. With its ability to provide significant pain relief, minimize medication reliance, and improve quality of life, SCS stands out as a cornerstone in the treatment landscape for chronic pain patients, providing hope and renewed possibilities for those struggling with persistent pain.
must be periodically replaced or refurbished. It is particularly effective for arthritic and grossly deformed feet where there is a loss of protective fatty tissue on the side of the foot. Because it is compressible, the soft orthotic is usually bulkier and may well require extra room in shoes, or prescription footwear.
Semi-Rigid Orthotics
The third type of orthotic device (semi-rigid) provides for dynamic balance of the foot while walking or participating in sports. This orthotic is not a crutch, but an aid to the athlete. This functional dynamic orthotic helps guide the foot through proper functions, allowing the muscles and tendons to perform more efficiently.
If any layer is missing or abnormal which can happen for a number of reasons the tear film becomes disorganized and no longer soothes the eye like it should. When that happens, the symptoms of dry eye syndrome occur. The front surface of the eye gets dried out (causing stickiness) and gets inflamed (causing stinging and burning). Once it gets inflamed, the eye ignores the proper tear film recipe and starts making large quantities of the aqueous layer in an effort to soothe itself.
These bad tears don’t soothe the eye at all they just run down your face, washing away the mucin and lipid layers as well. This makes the eye even more irritated, so it makes even more bad tears, and the cycle continues.
We are now able to perform scans to determine which layer of the tear film is causing your particular signs and symptoms. This allows us to
tailor treatments unique to you. We can provide regimens that include a combination of eye drops or even not using drops.
TearCare has become an invaluable tool for managing patients with Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD) and chronic dry eye. Primarily used TearCare for patients who have not found relief from traditional treatments like artificial tears or warm compresses. The flexibility of the device allows for personalized treatment plans, ensuring that it can provide targeted and effective care.
Recently published peer reviewed data shows that TearCare has been proven superior to the leading dry eye Rx. The positive feedback from patients regarding both the comfort of the procedure and the improvement seen in their signs has reinforced its role as a key component in dry eye management strategy.
For some people, the stinging, burning, redness and watering may seem like little more than a nuisance, but in fact, if left untreated, dry eye syndrome can lead to serious eye problems, including inflammation, increase the risk of infections, and even scarring. Once scarring occurs, permanent loss of sight can occur. If you have symptoms of dry eyes see your doctor. Treatments are available to halt the disease and improve your quality of vision.

A certified lymphedema therapists (CLT) is the perfect provider to evaluate and treat lipedema. These therapists have the training to differentiate between lymphedema, lipedema, and other types of swelling, and can work with you to better manage this chronic condition.
Surgery is another option considered. Liposuction is the main surgical intervention for lipedema. Although there is limited research, studies have found liposuction may be effective in reducing the size of the extremities and complaints associated with lipedema (ie spontaneous pain, easy bruising, sensitivity to pressure, impairment in quality of life, restrictions to mobility, edema, feeling of tension and general impairment.)
Most insurance companies and many surgeons will want to see that you have tried conservative treatments and that you have a good routine with these treatments before doing surgery. Furthermore, even after surgery, you will need to maintain the conservative treatment habits you established to best manage your lipedema.

Abnormal Bleeding
Abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB) refers to any deviation from normal menstrual patterns, including heavy menstrual bleeding (menorrhagia), bleeding between periods, or prolonged menstruation. AUB can be caused by various factors, including hormonal imbalances, fibroids, polyps, and underlying medical conditions like thyroid disorders or clotting issues.
Diagnosing AUB often involves a comprehensive evaluation, including medical history, physical examination, blood tests, and imaging studies like ultrasound. Treatment depends on the underlying cause and may include hormonal therapies, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), or surgical procedures such as dilation and curettage (D&C) or endometrial ablation.

• Avoid certain foods like citrus fruits, tomato products, fatty or greasy foods, chocolates, peppermints, vinegar, spicy foods, garlic, raw onions, and black or red pepper.
• Steer clear of certain beverages, especially on an empty stomach.
• Consume smaller meals throughout the day.
• Refrain from lying down, repeatedly bending over, or engaging in vigorous exercise for 2-3 hours after eating.
Adjust your sleeping routine:
• Elevate the head of your bed by at least 6 inches using a mattress wedge.
• Avoid eating or snacking within 2-3 hours before bedtime.

Endometriosis
Endometriosis is a chronic condition where tissue similar to the lining inside the uterus (endometrium) grows outside the uterus, commonly on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and pelvic lining. This misplaced tissue responds to menstrual cycle hormones, causing inflammation, pain, and the formation of scar tissue (adhesions).
Symptoms of endometriosis include severe menstrual cramps, chronic pelvic pain, pain during intercourse, and infertility. The exact cause of endometriosis is unclear, but factors like retrograde menstruation, genetics, and immune system issues are believed to contribute.
Diagnosis is often challenging and may require laparoscopy, a minimally invasive surgical procedure. Treatment options include pain management with NSAIDs, hormonal therapies to reduce or eliminate menstruation, and surgical removal of endometrial tissue. In severe cases, a hysterectomy may be considered.
burn. It is important to match your symptoms with the appropriate medication.
Do you experience occasional heartburn? An OTC medication, such as an antacid or H2 blocker, may be effective. Antacids neutralize stomach acid and provide quick but temporary relief lasting 1-2 hours. H2 blockers reduce the production of stomach acid and offer relief lasting 6-12 hours. Some brands include Tagamet HB®, Pepcid® AC, Axid® AR, and Zantac 75®.
Frequent heartburn, occurring two or more days a week, requires treatment with a medication called a proton pump inhibitor (PPI). Prilosec OTC™ is the only OTC medication approved for frequent heartburn. For prescription PPIs like Prevacid®, Aciphex®, and Protonix®, you will need to consult your healthcare provider. Prescription PPIs block the production of nearly all stomach acid, leaving just enough for normal digestion. You might hesitate to reach out to your primary healthcare provider about heartburn. However, if lifestyle changes and OTC medications fail to alleviate your discomfort, they can provide several other treatment options.

For the primary outcome of short-term relief from chronic pain, the meta-analyses revealed that acupuncture was significantly more effective than sham treatment and no additional treatment. The study concluded that acupuncture may effectively relieve chronic low back pain.

And adding HRT could boost control of body fat.

Once Indoors…
Check your clothing for ticks. Tumble dry clothes in a dryer on high heat for 10 minutes to kill ticks on dry clothing after you come indoors. If the clothes are damp, consider a longer dry time. If the clothes require washing first, hot water is best as cold and medium temperature water will not kill ticks.
Examine your gear and pets. Ticks ride into the home on clothing and pets.
Shower soon after being outdoors. Showering within two hours of coming indoors is shown to reduce your risk of getting Lyme disease and may be effective in reducing the risk of other tick-borne diseases.
Conduct a full body check. Use a hand-held or full-length mirror to view all parts of your body. Check these parts of your body and your child’s body for ticks: Under the arms, in and around the ears, inside belly button, back of the knees, in and around the hair, between

Clear tall grasses and brush around homes and at the edge of lawns. Place a three foot wide barrier of wood chips or gravel between lawns and wooded areas and around patios and play equipment. This will restrict tick migration into recreational areas.
Mow the lawn frequently and keep leaves raked. Stack wood neatly and in a dry area (discourages rodents that ticks feed on). Keep playground equipment, decks, and patios away from yard edges and trees and place them in a sunny location, if possible.

Our Care for You Is More Than Skin Deep…
Your skin is the largest organ in your body and, together with your hair and nails, the mirror of everything that’s happening internally. After over twenty years as a fellowship-trained, Board Certified dermatologist and as a cosmetic surgeon, I am completely convinced of the positive effects of integrating medical and cosmetic treatments to balance how you look with how you feel. When that balance is missing or has been lost with age, how we look doesn’t represent who we really are inside. Others may assume that an older, stressed or worried appearance means a lack of ideas, energy and creativity. This impacts us both personally and professionally. The greatest joy of my profession is restoring the inner-outer balance for the women and men who consult me. They find it an exhilarating experience to look in the mirror, and love the reflection that’s looking back.
My team and I offer you breakthrough technology, advanced science and true artistry in a warm, compassionate and emotionally intelligent environment. We stay on the cutting edge, serving as national research and training centers - in many cases, the only centers in the mid-Atlantic and East - for expert treatment of skin, hair and nail conditions and state of-the-art techniques including lasers, fillers, Botox, fat grafting, platelet-rich plasma (PRP), chemical peels, liposuction and body contouring and vaginal rejuvenation.
My mission in my North American and global research is to elucidate the scientific basis of new and emerging technologies, and how this science can be applied to achieve the best and safest procedural outcomes. As a Principal Investigator for studies of new technologies, a national and international teacher of dermatologists and plastic surgeons, and one of a handful of experts serving as an advisor and director of advanced medical education programs, I’m confident that you will achieve the best possible results when you entrust your face and body to our hands. As a daily practitioner of yoga, I understand the value of a holistic approach. Above all, my team and I promise to give you straight answers. We’ll steer you through the hype and jargon, and help you restore the inner-outer balance that empowers us in every aspect of our lives.
