And it’s goodbye from her.... h er You’d think with my penchant for quoting song lyrics, I would have a massive well to draw from this month: Never can say goodbye; Time to say Goodbye; Leaving on a jet plane - no wait - that’s just wishful thinking. This one is more a Hello, Goodbye as I’m leaving Your Elmbridge but Debbie is saying ‘Hello’!

!

"

Inside this month........

After eleven years I have decided to grant you all your wish and retire from Your Elmbridge. Its been fun and sometimes its been a lot of fun, but its never been boring. Now that retirement beckons I actually find that I can’t wait! I have husbands to look after (well, just the one), cats to feed, grandchildren to entertain, books to write, marathons to run (only joking). Might even redecorate the house....who knows what’s waiting for me? So, this is my last editorial in my last magazine. From September 1st Debbie will be taking over the Editorial Hot Seat. Her contact details are below so get in touch! She wants to hear all about your events and local news. So, until we meet in Waitrose/Tesco/Aldi it’s cheerio from me!

Halliford School, Shepperton Halliford School sits on the northern banks of the river Thames near Walton Bridge. There are currently around 400 pupils on roll. Simon Wilson, Headmaster writes: “At Halliford we value individuality, celebrate diversity and encourage our pupils to have the confidence to think for themselves, whilst emphasising the importance of tolerance, teamwork and collective responsibility. Halliford has a distinctive ethos based on pastoral care in its widest sense, and one which combines hard work with relaxation, discipline with informality and tradition with innovation.

school debating team this is a special moment for all the staff. At Halliford we place a great deal of importance on the valuable lessons that can be learnt from activities outside of the classroom. There is plenty of evidence to show that pupils who participate in extracurricular activities show positive changes in their skills and academic progress. They gain better self-respect, self-esteem and self-confidence; all soft skills that are needed to become productive students and adults. By participating in extracurricular activities pupils learn lessons in leadership, teamwork, organisation, analytical thinking, problem solving and time management. Extracurricular activities also widens a pupil’s social group and gives them the chance to meet others in different classes and year groups.

Our relatively small size contributes to the warm and friendly atmosphere where pupils feel at ease, are encouraged to fulfil their potential and where all are equally valued. The very able are stretched and challenged whilst the late developer is nurtured. This is possible because the pupils are well known to the staff and they provide individual support and encouragement to an unusually high degree. A very close relationship also exists between the School and its parents. One of the joys of working in Education is seeing the personal development of the pupils as they travel on their journey through school life. This joy manifests itself in many ways: The “Eureka” moments when a pupil suddenly understands a difficult mathematical concept, masters the declination of a verb, grasps the bonding of atoms or writes a magical poem. Pastorally pupils grow up and mature in different ways and when your nervous, hesitant Year 7 flourishes into a confident Year 11 speaker in your

As Headmaster, I believe passionately in the importance of the individual. It is my desire that every child at Halliford is valued for his or her own sake, encouraged to develop his or her talents to the full in a community where there are no stereotypes and where every achievement, however small, is noticed. Come and visit Halliford, you will see why we are so proud of our pupils and school environment.”

Perfect Plants Raised Low or Beds High Maintenance By Steve Law http://brightonplantsblogspot.co.uk/

By Steve Law

http://brightonplantsblogspot.co.uk/

Very few gardeners enjoy having to constantly cosset plants that are not really happy with the local conditions. We like our plants to grow and develop as naturally as possible, without too much help. While it may seem that the extra effort is worth making when the plants are new and exciting, it may not seem that way later when the novelty has worn off. Even if you are generally pretty conscientious, it only takes one slip-up and the plant can look sickly for the rest of the season. I’m not saying we shouldn’t go in for some high-maintenance planting – it’s what keen gardeners love to do – push the boundaries. What I’m saying is, make most of your garden easy and natural so you have the time and energy for the bits that aren’t. One way you can push the boundaries without giving yourself a lot of extra work is to build raised beds. There’s some initial construction work, but once that’s done they’re relatively easy to maintain and massively increase the range of things you can grow because, whatever soil your garden has, you can make an area with a completely different soil on top of it. The bed doesn’t have to be very deep – just 6ins of extra top soil

can make all the difference, but taller beds make looking at your treasures or harvesting your salads easier, especially if you can’t bend. The bigger your raised bed the slower it dries out, and except in hot dry spells they shouldn’t need masses of water, but even a tiny raised bed is better than a similar sized container because the compost is in contact with the soil and plants can root through. Raised beds work well on paving too. The bed can be made out of anything from brick or stone to a simple wooden frame made of gravel boards. Sleepers are good. Cover the ground underneath with weed-proof membrane so the plants can root down but weeds cannot come up. Line the sides with black plastic - you don’t want your irrigation running out the sides. Manuring and watering a veg patch can be onerous on poor soils - you’re adding endless amounts of organic matter and it just disappears. A raised bed for vegetables, salads and herbs gives you a space you can really feed and water intensively so you can get more food out of a smaller space. I recommend a 50:50 rich loam and organic

12

matter mix. Heap compost is excellent but I also recommend mushroom compost. Mixing in course sand up to 20% will keep the mix open. Top it up each year with whatever organic mulch you can get hold of. Well-drained raised beds for special plants are great for the plant nerd. The fact that the bed is above the soil level means it won’t waterlog even in the wettest weather. Choose a sunny spot and use a 50:50 compost/grit-sand mix, topped off with alpine grit and you can grow alpines, bulbs and hardy desert plants. It’s especially good for small plants which might get lost in the open garden. Lime-free raised beds are an obvious solution for people who want to grow Rhododendrons and other ericaceous plants, choice woodlanders and other calcifuges in chalky areas. They don’t need a great depth of soil but use plenty of leafy mulch to retain moisture in summer. A shady or north-facing site will help to keep it cool in summer. Watering with tap water is generally ok because any lime is washed through by the rain the rest of the year.

Drawn by Light Exhibition

Photographic Exhibition “Drawn by Light” comes to Walton-on-Thames Riverhouse Arts Centre will host an exciting exhibition of landscape photographs in September Five landscape photographers - Astrid McGechan (Walton-on-Thames), Rachael Talibart (Weybridge), Jenifer Bunnett (Guildford), Huw Alban (Shaftesbury) and David Neve (Lincoln) - join forces to exhibit an exciting selection of their landscape photographs at the Riverhouse Arts Centre in Walton-on-Thames. The exhibition will open to the public on Wednesday, 21 September and run until Sunday, 2 October. The work on show ranges from powerful seascapes, photographed when storm Imogen hit the South Coast earlier this year, and classic landscapes such as images of Stonehenge, Seven Sisters or the Lake District, to more intimate interpretations of the natural world around us. Although the subjects and styles of the photographs vary, they are united by the photographers’ passion for the outdoors and their desire to capture its beauty in their images. Renowned landscape photographer Charlie Waite, founder of

the annual ‘Take A View - Landscape Photographer of the Year’ competition and of photographic tour company Light and Land, says: “A landscape image cuts across all political and national boundaries, it transcends the constraints of language and culture.” Rarely does a straight image of a scene suffice to convey the emotions felt by the photographers at the time. Creative techniques are used to communicate light, form, texture and movement. “Visiting an exhibition of landscape photography amounts to more than just passively looking. The images stimulate and transport us to that same place inside ourselves.” says Charlie. The Gallery is open daily 10am to 4pm. Admission to the exhibition is free and framed prints of all images are for sale. More information about the Riverhouse Arts Centre can be found at www. riverhousebarn.co.uk.

Elmbridge Borough Council and Voluntary Action Elmbridge are asking for nominations for the Elmbridge Long Service Awards. These awards are in recognition of the thousands of hours given by the hundreds of volunteers who help make Elmbridge a vibrant and caring community. We would like to encourage the local voluntary, community and faith sector organisations to nominate up to two volunteers each. To qualify for these Long Service Awards, volunteers need to have given five years of volunteering or more. The deadline for nominations is 16 September 2016. The Awards will be presented by Mayor of Elmbridge, Councillor Mrs Tannia Shipley, at a ceremony held at the Civic Centre in Esher on 18 October, who is delighted to support “Elmbridge is a Borough that is supported by thousands of volunteers assisting the vibrant voluntary, community and faith sector here. Without these fantastic people, 18

who have a wonderful community spirit, many of the more vulnerable and less able people in our borough would have a poorer quality of life. These awards are a way for the Council and Voluntary Action Elmbridge to say a big ‘Thank you’.” Councillor Mrs Ruth Lyon, Portfolio Holder for Social Affairs added: “The Council is pleased to organise these awards jointly with Voluntary Action Elmbridge and we are keen to support the unique volunteer force that supports our community day in and day out in the Borough”. “We are delighted to be working in partnership with Elmbridge Borough Council to recognise the incredible support that Elmbridge volunteers give back to the voluntary sector.” Sally Dubery, Chief Officer Voluntary Action Elmbridge. For a nomination form please email volunteerawards@vae.org.uk, call 01372 463587 or visit www.vae.org. uk/elmbridge-volunteer-awards-2016

Superb Music in Claygate

by the 1st September), and receive six concerts at the average price of just over £13 each. Single tickets range from £18 to £22.

Seventy-five years have passed since the young English pianist, Moura Lympany, gave a recital in Cobham, to a group of ladies delighted to have a change from their usual fare of talks. A chance remark had led to the discovery that in their midst was a pianist of exceptional talent, already garnering fame as a result of winning the 2nd prize in the same prestigious Brussels International Competition in which Emil Gilels was the supreme Laureate.

This season’s first three concerts are before Christmas, and include the amazing American “Dover Quartet”, winners of not only the 1st prize, but also the 2nd, 3rd and 4th special prizes at the Banff International Competition in 2013! -A clean sweep! They are described as having the qualities to make them “the next Guarnerius Quartet.” Former BBC New Generation Artist Leonard Elschenbroich,(cello), with the amazing Alexei Grynyuk, piano, and the piano Trio Gaspard from Germany, follow. Other concerts include the Pelléas Ensemble,(flute, viola and Harp); “rising star” Vitaly Pisarenko, -the Ukrainian 1st prize winner of the Utrecht International Piano Competition, and the Celebrity Recital by Julian Bliss, clarinet. Last year he appeared in the Proms at the Royal Albert Hall.

That Cobham recital led to Sir Adrian Boult (conductor) assisting in the formation of the new Oxshott and Cobham Music Society. This year, six concerts across the winter months will bring superb international artists to Holy Trinity Church, Claygate, with its wonderful acoustics and comfortable seating. The OCMS has a strongly held reputation for offering musical performance of the highest calibre. There is no need to drive to London, or wait on cold railway stations, and no need to pay London prices. Instead, join as a Member for £80 (or £75 if paid 20

LEWIS Car Insurance This is a warning for everyone who pays for car insurance - check NOW if you can slash the cost. Do note, I haven’t said “If you’re at renewal”; it’s important to do this even if that’s many months away. Car insurance prices have exploded over the last year, up 20% according to the AA index, while the ‘Association of British Insurers’ says 10%. And both predict rises to continue this year. Yet by locking in on a cheap price now, that means those rises won’t affect you. Here’s a tweet I got from Iain: “Just saved £375 changing car insurance MID-POLICY thanks to @ MartinSLewis - thank you, man.” For full help, see my cheap car insurance system at: www. moneysavingexpert.com/carinsurance. Here’s the key need to knows. 1. Ensure you’re on TODAY’S cheapest deal, then if prices rise, you’re protected If the predictions are correct and prices keep moving up, today’s prices will soon look cheap. Plus, many are overpaying already, especially those who just auto-renewed. Here’s what to do: - AT RENEWAL? Then it’s easy, just move to the next point. - RENEWAL WITHIN 60 DAYS? Some firms such as www.aviva.co.uk , www.Nationwide.co.uk and www.LV.com give quotes valid for 60 days so get one now, then check against quotes at renewal time. As @dimuthuj7 tweeted: “@MartinSLewis. Renewal £521. Quote a month ago, which was honored, of £319. Thanks.” - MIDWAY THROUGH A POLICY? Follow the steps below to see if you can save a chunk by switching. If so, provided you’ve not claimed, for a £50ish admin fee (factor that in) you can usually cancel and get the rest of the year refunded. You won’t earn the year’s no-claims bonus, but if it means you save now and prevent future price

rises it can be a big winner. 2. Don’t just use one comparison site, combine them. There’s no one cheapest insurer, as prices are set individually. So the aim is to check as many quotes as possible, quickly and easily. Comparison sites do that, yet they don’t all cover the same insurers or even give the same price for the same insurer, so use more than one. My current order’s www.Confused.com, www. Gocompare.com and www.MoneySupermarket. com. If you can, use all three. 3. Then check the biggies comparison sites miss. www.DirectLine.com, www.Aviva.co.uk and www.Zurich.co.uk won’t appear on comparison sites, but can be competitive especially if you’ve no convictions and a clean licence. As @ damianderby tweeted me: “Did your car insurance checklist and saved £100 (1/3) off my renewal. It was Aviva. Pays to go past the comparison sites.” 4. Hidden hot deals comparison sites miss... There are also special promo deals around, some of which aren’t listed on comparison sites. These often mean you get, say, £60 Amazon voucher or free gifts with policies. There’s a daily updated list of the hottest at www.moneysavingexpert.com/ carinsurance. If you’re a member of cashback websites, you may also be able to get money back on the policy you’ve chosen. 5. Check multi-car policies if you’ve more than one car in the home A few insurers offer special discounts if you have more than one car. It’s always worth trial and error to compare these against standalone deals. Sadly, comparison sites’ tech doesn’t allow this, so you need to do it manually. www.Admiral.com Multicar gives discounts of up to 25% depending on how many cars you insure. You can also get discounts by linking the household standalone policies with www.Churchill.com, www.DirectLine. co.uk and www.Privilege.co.uk.

Cycling is cheap Once you’ve got your bike it’s free, unlike going to the gym or swimming or sky diving(!).

Cycling is good for your body It is widely recognised that along with swimming, cycling is one of the best forms of all round exercise a body can get. You’re not putting your body under a lot of stress, it’s not high impact (like running - which can hammer your knees, or like squash for example, which has a good track record of killing unfit people who get carried away chasing after the ball), it can be as gentle or as strenuous as you choose.

Cycling is useful Unlike swimming, or going to the gym, or skydiving, cycling can actually serve a purpose, in that you can cycle to work, cycle to the shops, take your kids to school... Cycling is fun! There is so much to enjoy - the physical exhilaration, freewheeling down a hill, the sense of achievement from riding up a hill, the freedom to ride further than you though possible, learning how to maintain your bike, doing something which doesn’t tie you to a car...

Cycling allows you to explore more When on a bike, you have the freedom to leave your house / flat / canal boat / mansion and instantly explore your surroundings. Unlike driving in a car, where everything whizzes past in a blur (unless you get stuck in lots of traffic jams), cycling gives you the opportunity to take your time, to look around, to feel the wind in your face, to hear birds singing, to smell cow dung and silage and get mud on your shoes.

Cycling can be built into your daily routines Instead of driving more, you could cycle more and drive less. So many people join gyms or go on diets and fill themselves with unrealistic targets and then get fed up and down when they fail to meet them. If you cycle, you don’t have to pay to join an expensive gym, or have to eat strange foods as part of a calorie-controlled diet you’ll burn up lots of energy cycling, and you’ll find that cycling is enjoyable and that using the bike to pop to the shops is far more realistic and attainable a goal than trying to look like Kylie Minogue / Brad Pitt / [other default slim line celebrity].

It removes you from the sterile world Most of us in the ‘developed’ world live in. Of course, running also gives you these things, but running hurts, running is also slow, and you can’t carry loads of shopping or your children on your back while you’re running either.

When you’re on your bike, take care to keep yourself and other road users safe: • Ride away from the edge of the road, particularly when passing junctions. • Ride away from the kerb, to avoid debris and drain covers. • Be aware of car doors being opened as you pass them. • Take extra care and consider other users on shared paths. • Make sure that your helmet is fitted correctly. • Remember to follow the Highway Code.

utumn is nearly upon us, so why not dust off your bike and explore what Surrey has to offer? Whether it’s a gentle meander down a country lane, cycling to school with the children, or popping into town for some retail therapy, getting on your bike is fun, free and good for you and the environment.

South Africa The Garden Route By Solange Hando Such a lovely name seems far too humble for the magnificent southern coast of the Western Cape. Stretching for some 200 km along the Indian Ocean, from Mossel Bay to the Tsitsikamma National Park, this is a largely untamed African Garden of rugged shores and virgin beaches, lagoons and lakes, mountains, gorges, flowers and forests of conifer and red and yellow wood. Heather and fynbos bloom purple and gold along the paths and myriads of birds weave their nests in lush greenery. Half way between the Cape and Port Elizabeth, ‘Route 62’ reaches George, the main town, where pride of place goes to the superb transport museum gleaming with steam engines and vintage trains, including the royal carriage of George VI. The last steam train recently ceased operations though Friends hope it may reopen. At the moment, a ‘powervan’, a bus running on rail, carries excited visitors on the same scenic line laced with tunnels, viaducts and bridges, and up the dramatic Outeniqua mountains, named after the honey bees once buzzing on flower-covered slopes. The range follows the coast, dropping steeply on the northern side where the arid

lands of Little Karoo beckon with ostrich farms and a meagre shade. On this legendary Garden Route, luxuriant nature reserves flourish alongside a sprinkling of coastal resorts haunted by surf and sun seekers. Popular Plettenberg is a great place to watch dolphins and whales, especially in the southern winter, while at the heart of the National Lake Area, Knysna is famed for its festivals, oysters and colonies of seabirds. It’s an attractive place festooned in bottle brush and bougainvillea and down in the bay, honeycoloured rocks are battered by the waves. Along the coast, Mossel Bay hugs a fine crescent of white sands where Bartolomeu Dias, the first navigator to sail around the tip of Africa, landed in 1488. This little gem also claims the oldest ‘post office’, a tree, still standing, they say, where sailors of yore left messages before returning to sea. Created in 2009, the Garden Route National Park covers an amazing range of ecosystems from the Knysna Lake Area to the Tsitsikamma and Wilderness national parks. Framed by mountains and forests, fringed by pristine beaches, lakes and

34

waterways, Wilderness has wetlands of international importance, meadows bursting with spring flowers and nature trails where you might spot myriad kingfishers and vervet monkeys. On the eastern edge of the Garden Route, you reach Tsitsikamma, a true paradise for nature lovers, both on land and sea where you can snorkel along underwater trails and explore the reefs. Meanwhile in the forest, baboons forage around as a dappled light filters through the lofty cathedral-like canopy. Yellowwoods draped in lichen reach up to 50 metres, mosses and ferns carpet the valley floor and crystal clear streams babble in the undergrowth. The woody scent of fynbos lingers in the air and there are sparkling waterfalls and lots of trails stretching across cliffs and rivers to Nature’s Valley. Hikes range from a short walk to the mouth of the Storms River and its vertiginous suspension bridge, to the 42 km long Otter trail along the coast, with a chance to swim and ford a river or two. But most exciting of all is a sudden flash of olive green in a nearby tree as a beautiful Knysna Lourie, one of the most elusive birds in the park, takes off in the canopy.

Why do the rich get richer? by

Kevin Waters Learning new concepts can be a joy but it can become all too easy to get stuck in our old ways of thinking and as the old Chinese saying states “you can’t fit more water into a full glass”. The simple truth is that most of us are not comfortable with talking about money. It’s not something polite to discuss how to get it, how much we earn or are worth. But that is not the same in all households. In my experiences those who have wealth tend to be far more interested and open to concepts about how to retain their wealth for themselves, their family and future generations. If you have a few hours spare and have the interest, you’ll find much research proving that the over the last 300 years the same family names appear again and again at Oxford and Cambridge or in the wealth lists of the largest landowners in the country. How do they do it? Simple, they think DYNASTICALLY. Of course we all wish to enjoy our wealth in our own lifetime but the difference is they realise how much tax, in general, and specifically Generational Inheritance Tax can erode their assets and legacies.

When you die your estate will be valued and after a tax allowance is applied, currently £325,000, your estate will have to pay 40% Inheritance Tax (IHT) on the remainder, which significantly reduces what the next generation receive. This inheritance tax then applies to their own assets and legacies when they die, plus any residue of their original inheritance and so it goes on generation after generation eroding the family pot. It’s simple enough to stop this rot by the prudent application of trusts. Now trusts have been in existence for 100s of years and are steeped in old lore. Believe me when I say that although you this might be something you have heard or read something about your wealthier friends will know all about the benefits of trusts. A common objection is that “this stuff is fine for the rich but we can’t afford such a luxury”. Well I am here to tell you that this kind of advice does indeed cost more than a will pack from the Post Office but is more affordable to ordinary people than ever before. Bearing in mind property prices in Elmbridge many here are asset rich and it may well be well worth while investing a little of that locked in wealth into building a dynasty so your bloodline, the next generation, have the right start in life and are mindful to keep their glasses half full.

One of the last acts of David Cameron’s government was to give preliminary approval for 31 new “free schools” that will provide around 20,000 high-quality places for pupils around the country. One of the chosen projects will be a brand new secondary school in Elmbridge, to be run by the ElmWey Learning Trust, which operates Heathside School in Weybridge. In 2015, Heathside School was in the top 10% of non-selective schools nationally for high average grades achieved by students. The new school, which is to be named “Heathside, Walton-on-Thames”, will now seek to obtain a suitable site before signing a funding agreement with the government. Free schools are state schools that can be set up and run by groups such as charities, teachers, universities and businesses rather than local councils. Free schools have more control than traditional schools over how they do things, with greater freedom to set their own pay and conditions for staff and change the length of school terms and the school day, for example. Some free schools have used these freedoms to extend the school to offer more extra-curricular activities to pupils while others have used their freedoms to offer high-quality teaching in areas including maths, science and languages. Of the 304 free schools have opened to date, 1 in 4 have been rated outstanding by Ofsted. This is above the national average, providing greater local choice for parents.

Free schools have been at the heart of David Cameron’s education reforms, which have seen more than 1.4 million more children in good or outstanding schools since 2010. That is an outstanding legacy. The announcement of preliminary approval for Heathside, Walton-on-Thames is great news for Elmbridge. One of my key campaigns since becoming an MP has been increasing the number of school places here in Elmbridge. I have liaised with ElmWey’s Executive Principal, Anne Cullum, and her team and was supportive of their bid to the Department for Education. The new school – to be based in the Walton and Molesey area – aims to open in September 2019. By 2024, the new school will provide 900 school places locally, easing pressure for pupils and parents. ElmWey Learning Trust, have a strong track record and currently run Heathside School in Weybridge, which is rated “Good” by Ofsted – “Outstanding” for leadership. With school places a pressing issue for many local parents, this announcement comes at a crucial time. I will continue to work with Anne Cullum and her team and Surrey County Council to help Heathside, Walton on Thames establish itself. With the re-development of Rydens Enterprise School and ongoing efforts to secure a site for the Cobham Free School, this latest approval will go a long way to easing pressure on local school places for families across the borough.

Police 5 (Minutes) Summer Updates By Sarah Milligan Elmbridge Neighbourhood Inspector across the county have told him are the most important to them where they live and work. These are: Cutting Crime and Keeping Surrey Safe; Supporting Victims; Tackling Rural Crime; Making Our Town Centres Safe; Making Every Pound Count; Tackling the Threat of Terrorism. You can learn more about how the PCC plans to shape the future of policing in Surrey by visiting http://surrey-pcc. gov.uk/plan

I hope everyone has enjoyed a relaxing summer break and had the opportunity to spend much valued time with family and friends. There are plenty of updates to give you about what’s been happening and what’s new. So here goes……. Last month the Safer Neighbourhoods Team for Walton-on-Thames were recognised for their outstanding work over the last year. The Derek Willott Award is presented annually to the neighbourhood team who have worked with their community to identify and resolve issues that are having a detrimental impact on the lives of local residents. Their tireless efforts in tackling anti-social behaviour, with pro-active patrols, ‘street a week’ visits and talks, joint patrols with housing providers, environmental visual audits, covert licensing checks and days of action, resulted in the completion of six Criminal Behaviour Orders, a social media campaign to tackle an increase in graffiti, as well as the co-ordination of seven warrants across the Elmbridge area. This in turn led to the seizure of a substantial amount of cash (believed to be the proceeds of crime) and a large quantity of drugs, as well as a number of suspects being arrested. An excellent result all round!

Monday 15 August saw the launch of a number of additional new powers for Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) to assist them in their work to tackle chronic and repeat issues within Surrey’s communities in support of neighbourhood policing. Their core role remains to provide a visible uniformed presence, carrying out minor enforcement activity in support of problem-solving efforts, deterring anti-social behaviour, crime and disorder and enhancing community confidence. Additionally, they continue to work with other departments within the organisation, partner agencies and local communities to develop the best solution to address and resolve chronic or repeat problems. Their new powers include issuing a range of fixed penalty notices for a variety of offences such as causing harassment, alarm of distress, alcohol offences involving children and throwing fireworks. They can also issue Community Protection Notices where there is a criminal element to anti-social behaviour.

Some of this activity is reflected in the new Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC), David Munro’s Police and Crime Plan for the county, which pledges to put building safer communities and supporting victims at the heart of policing in Surrey. The plan will focus on six priorities based on what communities
